We present a new method for mapping global gas flaring using a multiyear spatio-temporal database of VIIRS Nightfire (VNF) nighttime infrared detections from the Suomi NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21 satellites. The method is designed to resolve closely spaced industrial combustion sources and to produce a stable, physically meaningful flare catalog suitable for long-term monitoring and emissions analysis. The method combines adaptive spatial aggregation of high-temperature detections with a hierarchical clustering that super-resolves individual flare stacks within oil and gas fields. Post-processing yields physically consistent flare footprints and attraction regions, allowing separation of closely spaced sources. Flare clusters are assigned to operational categories (e.g., upstream, midstream, LNG) using prior catalogs combined with AI-assisted expert interpretation. In this step, a multimodal large language model (LLM) provides contextual classification suggestions based on geospatial information, high-resolution daytime imagery, and detection time-series summaries, while final attribution is performed and validated by domain experts. Compared with annual flare catalogs commonly used for national flaring estimates, the new catalog demonstrates substantially improved performance. It is more selective in the presence of intense atmospheric glow from large flares, identifies approximately twice as many active flares, and localizes individual stacks with ~50 m precision, resolving emitters separated by ~400–700 m. For the well-defined class of downstream flares at LNG export facilities, the catalog achieves complete detectability. These improvements support more accurate flare inventories, facility-level attribution, and policy-relevant assessments of gas flaring activity. Full article

Background/Objectives: We investigated the association between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and liver fibrosis, and whether this relationship differs by obesity and diabetes status. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–March 2020 cycle. LTPA was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and classified as physically active if engaging in ≥600 metabolic equivalent (MET)-minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity, or inactive. Clinically significant liver fibrosis was defined as liver stiffness measurement (LSM) ≥ 8.0 kPa on transient elastography. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for significant liver fibrosis, with additional subgroup analyses according to obesity and diabetes status. Results: In 7662 U.S. adults, physically active participants (n = 2721) had a lower prevalence of significant fibrosis than inactive individuals (5.4% vs. 11.4%, p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, Participants who were physically active were associated with 42% lower odds of having fibrosis (OR 0.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.41–0.82; p = 0.004). This association remained consistent in subgroup analyses stratified by obesity and diabetes status, even in the non-obese subgroup with body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2 (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.32–0.91; p = 0.022) and the non-diabetic subgroup (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.39–0.90; p = 0.016). Conclusions: Regular moderate-to-vigorous LTPA was independently associated with lower likelihood of clinically significant liver fibrosis. This beneficial association was significant regardless of obesity or diabetes status, suggesting that LTPA may play a clinically meaningful role in populations at high risk for progressive liver disease. Background: Precursor endometrial lesions and endometrial cancer are strongly influenced by lifestyle-related risk factors, including obesity, low physical activity, and unfavorable dietary patterns. Identifying these factors is essential for early prevention and for improving health literacy among women. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of modifiable lifestyle factors on the likelihood of developing EIN and endometrial cancer in comparison with leiomyoma. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 50 women, divided into three groups: leiomyoma (n = 20), EIN (n = 15), and endometrial cancer (n = 15). BMI, physical activity, dietary habits, sleep duration, stress levels, and smoking status were assessed. Statistical analysis included the Kruskal–Wallis test, correlation analysis, and logistic regression. Results: BMI was identified as an independent predictor of EIN/EC (OR = 1.29; p = 0.015). Women with EIN/EC demonstrated significantly lower levels of physical activity (p = 0.018). A clustering of behavioral risks was observed: higher BMI was associated with higher stress and shorter sleep duration. Conclusions: Modifiable lifestyle factors play a key role in the development of precursor and malignant endometrial conditions. Targeted interventions focusing on weight management, increased physical activity, and improved health literacy may reduce risk and improve quality of life among peri- and postmenopausal women. Background: Aging is a complex process that involves various biological, psychological and social changes. Moreover, older people (≥65 years) are more susceptible to lower self-efficacy and social support, as well as deteriorating mental health. As the global population ages, there is a growing demand for evidence-based interventions tailored to address specific mental health problems, enhance social support and improve overall well-being. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a seven-week mindfulness-based community intervention on mental health, self-efficacy and social support in older people. Methods: This quasi-experimental nonrandomized study included 257 participants who were divided into an intervention group and a comparison group that did not participate in the seven-week mindfulness-based community intervention and was not part of a waiting list. Assessments were conducted before the intervention began and 6 months after its completion. Results: The results revealed a significant reduction in depression in the intervention group (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the intervention led to a significant improvement in general self-efficacy, chronic disease self-management self-efficacy, physical activity and nutritional self-efficacy compared with the comparison group. Perceived social support increased within the intervention group; however, covariate adjusted between-group effects for social support were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Overall, the mindfulness-based community intervention was associated with improvements in current depressive symptoms and multiple self-efficacy domains at 6-month follow-up in older people in a community setting. Effects on perceived social support were less robust, and no statistically significant between-group differences were observed after adjustment for baseline covariates. The results of the present study show that this program leads to immediate health benefits in terms of mental health and self-efficacy in older people while contributing to the development of effective strategies for chronic disease self-management. Intensive broiler chicken farming is one of the most important livestock sectors globally. However, intensive production systems raise concerns about farm sustainability, as well as ensuring animal welfare and product quality. For this reason, identifying novel, high-value-added feed ingredients is crucial. Winery by-products (WBPs) are a valuable source of bioactive compounds and can be utilized as functional feed ingredients. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with grape seed meal and grape pomace meal in diets for broilers up to 42 days of age. Three dietary treatments were formulated—grape seed meal (3% and 6%), grape pomace meal (3% and 6%), and a combination (3% seed meal + 3% pomace meal)—along with a standard diet (control). The proximal composition (moisture, protein, fatty acid profile, fats, ash), antioxidant parameters (ROS, GSH, NO, POV), free radical scavenging activity (DPPH and ABTS•+), and total phenolic content of the meat and physical characteristics (color) were assessed. While proximal composition of meat was not significantly influenced by the dietary treatment, some parameters, such as total phenolic content, PUFA levels, and antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity, were improved. These results demonstrate enhanced favorable traits improving chicken meat quality and confirm the potential of WBPs as functional feed ingredients, promoting a more sustainable production model aligned with the principles of the circular economy. Background/Objectives: Comprehensive knowledge of body composition and bone status across the lifespan is critical for clinical evaluation and public health initiatives. This study aimed to develop age- and sex-specific reference curves for body composition and bone status in a physically active Greek population aged 18–80 using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). A secondary objective was to examine age- and sex-related trends in fat distribution, lean mass (LM), and bone status. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 637 participants (275 men and 362 women). Physical activity was assessed through structured interviews evaluating type, frequency, and intensity, categorized using established guidelines from organizations such as the American Heart Association and World Health Organization. Anthropometric data and DXA scans were utilized to measure parameters including fat mass (FM), LM, and BMD. Participants were stratified into age categories, and percentile curves were generated using generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS). Results: Among women, body mass increased by 20.9% and body fat percentage rose by 38.3% from the youngest to the oldest age group, accompanied by a 5.7% reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) and an 11.5% decline in bone mineral content (BMC). Men exhibited a 49.1% increase in body fat percentage, with LM remaining stable across age groups. In men, BMD decreased by 1.7%, while BMC showed minimal variation. Notable sex differences were observed in fat redistribution, with android fat (AF) increasing significantly in older individuals, particularly among women, highlighting distinct age-related patterns. Conclusions: This study provides essential reference data on body composition and bone status, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions to address sex- and age-related changes, particularly in fat distribution and bone density, to support improved health outcomes in aging populations. Background/Objectives: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder closely linked to cardiovascular disease and obesity and notably influenced by lifestyle and dietary patterns. The Mediterranean diet has well-established benefits across multiple cardiometabolic risk factors, including those relevant to diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the degree to which adults with T2D adhere to a Mediterranean dietary pattern and to examine how such adherence relates to glycemic and lipidemic regulation. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 adults with T2D (54 men and 46 women). Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS). Demographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, and clinical data were collected, and glycemic and lipid parameters were analyzed. Associations between Mediterranean diet adherence and metabolic outcomes were examined using correlation analyses and multivariable regression models adjusted for relevant confounders. Results: Most participants showed low adherence to the Mediterranean diet. A significant inverse association was observed between Mediterranean diet adherence and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, with individuals scoring ≤35 on the MDS demonstrating higher HbA1c levels. Similar trends were observed in the lowest tertile of adherence. Notably, each one-point increase in MDS predicted a 0.13% reduction in HbA1c. In multivariable regression analyses, Mediterranean diet adherence remained the strongest predictor of glycemic control, independent of age, body mass index (BMI), sex, smoking status, physical activity and the number of antidiabetic treatments. Higher adherence was also significantly associated with lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) levels, as well as higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) concentrations. Conclusions: Greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet is independently associated with improved glycemic regulation and a more favorable lipid profile in adults with T2D. These findings support the Mediterranean diet as a valuable non-pharmacologic strategy for optimizing metabolic outcomes in people with T2D. Full article

It is a challenge in experimental studies today to accurately predict the trapping mechanisms in saline aquifers that influence the long-term CO2 storage capacities. The inability in current experimental studies to quantify the effects of combined processes of solubility, hysteresis, and mineralization as a means of affecting saline aquifer properties that influence CO2 trapping mechanisms makes this topic interesting. A systematic framework in CMG-GEM compositional simulation studies is proposed in this article to assess the effects of gradually modelled trapping mechanisms on CO2 storage performance. Simulation studies are conducted under identical constraints, trapping mechanisms, as well as operational factors in a sequential process that activates (i) solubility, (ii) solubility + hysteresis, and (iii) solubility + hysteresis + mineralization. The findings demonstrate distinct differences in trapping process behaviors as well as simulation stability under various modes: hysteresis effects largely improve immobile reserves as well as decrease plume migration, and, on the other hand, mineralization adds long-term dynamics of capacity increase as well as porosity-permeability alterations, especially in carbonate reservoirs. Through long-term post-injection simulations (up to 1000 years), the findings demonstrate that various trapping processes trigger over distinct time periods—years for immobile reserves, decades for dissolution, and centuries in the case of mineralization. This contribution is able to point out the computational efficiency as well as defective model behavior of concern to various physics levels, providing a practical guide to modelers in making a well-informed decision on what constitutes a minimum set of physics in long-term trustworthy CO2 storage. Background and Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent condition that impairs quality of life, functionality, and work productivity. While most acute episodes of back pain resolve, 4–25% become chronic due to factors such as high pain intensity, psychological distress, and maladaptive behaviors. Nonspecific CLBP is best understood through the biopsychosocial model, encompassing biological, psychological, and social influences, including kinesiophobia. Management relies on physical activity, pain education, and psychological interventions, with therapist knowledge and attitudes affecting outcomes. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of CLBP among healthcare workers, examine their knowledge of pain neurophysiology, evaluate kinesiophobia, and explore how personal experience with CLBP influences their beliefs, attitudes, and interactions with patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted from January to May 2025 among healthcare professionals. A total of 50 participants completed an online questionnaire, of which 42 were valid and included in the analysis. The questionnaire collected demographic and professional data, determined the presence of CLBP, and included three standardized instruments: the Revised Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire (rNPQ) to assess knowledge of pain mechanisms, the Health Care Providers’ Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale (HC-PAIRS) to evaluate beliefs about pain and disability, and the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK-11) to measure fear of movement. Data were analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. Results: Among the 42 participants, 11 demonstrated low, 28 moderate, and 3 high knowledge of pain neurophysiology (rNPQ), with a mean score of 5.66. On the HC-PAIRS, the majority (30 participants) scored above 60, indicating beliefs that pain leads to disability, while 12 scored below 60, reflecting a biopsychosocial perspective; gender did not significantly affect HC-PAIRS scores (p = 0.213). As for kinesiophobia (TSK-11), 24 participants had low, 17 moderate, and 1 clinically significant fear of movement. Correlation analysis revealed that younger participants had higher rNPQ scores (r = −0.358, p = 0.020) and lower TSK-11 scores (r = −0.389, p = 0.011). TSK-11 scores increased with age (r = 0.432, p = 0.004), while HC-PAIRS scores showed no significant correlations. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals, particularly physiotherapists, show gaps in knowledge of pain neurophysiology and a tendency toward biomedical beliefs regarding chronic low back pain. This cross-sectional study indicates that a greater understanding of pain mechanisms is associated with lower kinesiophobia, emphasizing the importance of education. Integrating the biopsychosocial model into undergraduate and continuing professional training, through interdisciplinary and practical modules, may improve knowledge, reduce maladaptive fear-avoidance behaviors, and enhance patient care. Future studies should include larger, more diverse samples and assess the long-term impact of educational interventions on clinical practice. Full article

Low social status leads to chronic social stress that predicts risk for physical and mental illness, especially when it starts early in life. To examine the longitudinal effects of low social status on the immune system, this study assessed the effects of low social status on developmental secretory patterns of pro- and anti-inflammatory markers under baseline conditions, as well as in response to an immune challenge (lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines) in a translational rhesus monkey model of lifelong social subordination stress. Baseline blood samples were collected in 27 socially housed female rhesus monkeys (13 dominants, DOM, and 14 subordinates, SUB) during infancy (6 months), the juvenile pre-pubertal period (16 months), and adulthood (9–10 years) to examine the longitudinal effects of social status on inflammatory markers in unstimulated versus LPS-stimulated conditions mimicking exposure to bacterial infection. Basal levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood were measured to examine associations between inflammation and activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis throughout the life span. Basal peripheral levels of inflammatory markers (e.g., IL-6) increased across development in both SUB and DOM animals with no significant differences. Basal cortisol levels were significantly higher in infancy as compared to adulthood, but no significant effects of social rank were detected. However, in adulthood, SUB animals showed a cytokine-specific immune response to ex vivo LPS stimulation with significantly higher secretions of IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-10 compared to DOM animals, whereas IL-8 response to LPS was lower in SUB animals than in DOMs. This cytokine-specific response to an immune challenge that mimics bacterial infection could reflect dysregulated immune cells that may have short-term adaptation, but at the cost of longer-term risks for low-grade chronic inflammation and accelerated immune aging for socially subordinate female macaques. Background/Objectives: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults, even among those who are physically active. This study examined the associations between skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle power and fall risk in physically active, community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 280 participants (71.9 ± 5.3 years; 75% women) enrolled in the Stay Up–Falls Prevention Project. Assessments included skeletal muscle mass (anthropometric prediction equation), handgrip strength, lower limb strength and power (Five Times Sit-to-Stand test, 5×STS), and fall history over the past 12 months. Muscle power was calculated from 5×STS performance using the equation proposed by Alcazar and colleagues. Logistic regression models and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed. Results: Overall, 26.4% of participants reported at least one fall in the previous year, with a higher prevalence among women (28.9%) than men (18.8%). Fallers showed significantly lower handgrip strength (23.1 vs. 25.4 kg, p = 0.022) and poorer lower limb strength (9.2 vs. 8.7 s, p = 0.007) compared with non-fallers. However, no significant differences were found for skeletal muscle mass or sit-to-stand–derived power. In multivariable models adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, comorbidities, and medications, lower limb strength remained the only independent variable associated with fall status (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.11–2.85, p = 0.016). ROC analysis confirmed fair discriminative capacity for 5×STS performance (AUC = 0.616, p = 0.003), with an optimal cut-off of 8.62 s (sensitivity = 78.4%, specificity = 33.0%). Handgrip strength, muscle mass, and power did not show independent associations with fall status. Conclusions: These findings indicate that the 5×STS test provides a simple, cost-effective, and functional indicator for fall-risk stratification in physically active older adults. Clinicians should consider the 5×STS as a sensitive functional indicator that contributes to fall risk stratification, ideally combined with complementary assessments (e.g., balance, gait, cognition) to improve risk stratification and guide preventive interventions in ageing populations. The global rise in nursing home (NH) populations presents substantial challenges, as residents frequently experience physical and cognitive decline, low physical activity, and high fall risk. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the BeSt Age App, a tablet-based, staff-supported mHealth intervention designed to promote physical activity and prevent falls among NH residents. Primary outcomes were fall incidence and fall risk (assessed using Berg Balance Scale [BBS] and Timed Up and Go [TUG]); fear of falling was a secondary outcome. In a cluster-randomized controlled trial across 19 German NHs, 229 residents (mean age = 85.4 ± 7.4 years; 74.7% female) were assigned to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The 12-week intervention comprised twice-weekly, tablet-guided exercise sessions implemented by NH staff. Mixed models and generalized estimating equations were used under an intention-to-treat framework. The IG showed significantly greater improvement in BBS scores than the CG (group × time: F(1, 190.81) = 8.25, p = 0.005, d = 0.22), while group × time changes in TUG performance, fear of falling, and fall incidence were nonsignificant. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of a staff-mediated mHealth approach to fall prevention in NH residents, showing significant improvements in BBS scores as one functional indicator of fall risk, while TUG, fall incidence and fear of falling showed no change. Physical Education (PE) is envisioned differently across generations, yet these perspectives can be aligned with contemporary curriculum reform. Guided by Strauss–Howe generational theory and Turkey’s 2025 Türkiye Century Education Model, this qualitative study examines lesson design preferences among teachers (Generations X and Y) and students (Generation Z). Thirty-two purposively selected participants from provinces identified by Ministry success indicators completed semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed through directed content analysis alongside thematic analysis. Findings indicate convergence on gamified, technology-supported, and individualized PE with process-oriented, fair assessment. Teachers endorse this vision while foregrounding constraints associated with infrastructure, time, space, and class size. The emergent profile mirrors the 2025 curriculum’s virtue–value–action orientation and its literacy and socio-emotional competencies. Four priorities translate the framework into implementable design: (i) multi-evidence assessment that captures performance and growth, (ii) systematic differentiation via station-based and modular activity designs, (iii) short feedback cycles coupled with structured student-voice mechanisms, and (iv) strengthened school digital infrastructure with targeted professional learning to build digital pedagogical competence. Overall, the study articulates a generationally informed, feasible architecture for PE that bears implications for curriculum development, teacher education, and school improvement. Full article

Designing robust drinking water treatment schemes for eutrophic sources requires shifting from considering each treatment step separately to considering the full treatment process as a connected system. This study evaluated how treatment configuration and arrangement influence microbial community dynamics, organic carbon removal, and biological stability in a full-scale drinking water treatment plant. A Dutch treatment plant was monitored, operating two parallel lines: one conventional (coagulation, sedimentation, and rapid sand filtration) and one advanced (ion exchange, ceramic microfiltration, and advanced oxidation), both converging into granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration. Microbial and chemical water quality was assessed across treatment stages and seasons. This plant experiences periods of discoloration, taste, and odor issues, and an exceedance of Aeromonas counts in the distribution network. Advanced oxidation achieved a high bacterial cell inactivation (~90%); however, it significantly increased assimilable organic carbon (AOC) (300–900% increase), challenging biological stability. GAC filtration partially reduced AOC levels (from 70 μg Ac-C/L to 12 μg Ac-C/L) but also supported dense (105 cells/mL) and diverse microbial communities (Shannon diversity index 5.83). Moreover, Gammaproteobacteria, which harbor opportunistic pathogens such as Aeromonas, persisted during the treatment. Archaea were highly sensitive to oxidative and physical stress, leading to reduced diversity downstream. Beta diversity analysis revealed that treatment configuration, rather than seasonality, governed the community composition. The findings highlight that treatment arrangement, oxidation, GAC operation, and organic and microbial loads critically influence biological stability. This study proposes integrated strategies to achieve resilient and biologically stable drinking water production when utilizing complex water sources such as eutrophic lakes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, affecting patients’ daily lives in multiple domains, including functional status, health-related quality of life, and psychological well-being. This study examined the relationship between self-reported global activity level, functional status, Health Related QoL (HRQoL), and psychological state among patients with Parkinson’s disease in Greece. Methods: Thirty volunteers (mean age = 69.07, SD = 11.24), members of the Greek Parkinson’s Patients and Caregivers Association, completed (a) the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire to evaluate HRQoL and (b) the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess psychological state. Participants then performed (a) the Five Times Sit to Stand Test (FTSST) and (b) the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) to evaluate functional status. All questionnaires and the test used in the present study have been validated in Greek. Correlation analysis with Spearman r tests with Bonferroni correction was performed between the above variables. Subsequent linear regression models were used to identify independent predictors of HRQoL and balance using SPSS 29.0.2.0. Results: Participants reported elevated anxiety (M = 9.67, SD = 4.44) and depressive symptoms (M = 8.97, SD = 4.08), alongside relatively high HRQoL scores (M = 40.09, SD = 18.40). Impaired functional performance was observed, with 22 participants failing to complete the FTSST within 16 s and 16 scoring below 40 on the BBS. Functional status was strongly correlated with HRQoL (r = −0.696, p < 0.001) and activity level (r = −0.521, p < 0.008). Depression was also significantly associated with poorer HRQoL (r = 0.618, p < 0.008) and lower activity levels (r = −0.545, p < 0.008). Regression analyses revealed that balance (β = −0.526), disease duration (β = 0.437), anxiety (β = 0.411), and lower limb function (β = −0.351) were significant independent predictors of HRQoL (R2 = 0.785; F(9, 20) = 12.69; p < 0.001), while HRQoL (β = −0.738) and lower limb function (β = −0.391) independently predicted balance (R2 = 0.699; F(9, 20) = 4.72; p = 0.002), suggesting a bidirectional relationship between physical function and subjective well-being. Conclusions: Activity level, HRQoL, functional status, and psychological state in patients with Parkinson’s disease are interrelated factors. Increased levels of anxiety and depression, as well as reduced HRQoL, were observed. The findings point to a potentially reinforcing cycle between poor balance and diminished quality of life, with anxiety and age playing key roles. Overall, the results illustrate that functional, psychological, and HRQoL measures interact in complex ways, emphasizing the multidimensional profile of patients with Parkinson’s disease. Further studies with larger samples are required to confirm these findings. Full article
