Background/Objectives: Typically, studies aiming to assess the ability of canine parvovirus (CPV) vaccines to immunise puppies with maternally derived antibody (MDA) are undertaken using group-housed puppies. Since live attenuated vaccine virus is invariably shed in the faeces, this can result in repeated oral re-exposure and puppies which failed to respond to the initial vaccination may respond instead to shed vaccine virus in the environment, thus artificially enhancing the efficacy of the vaccine. This problem can be avoided by adopting a pair-housed study design where one vaccinated pup is housed with one unvaccinated sentinel. Using this design, we examine the capability of four commercially available canine parvovirus vaccines to immunise MDA-positive pups. Methods: Thirty-four 6-week-old puppies born to vaccinated dams were divided into four vaccine groups with similar MDA ranges. Within each group puppies were paired based on matching MDA titres, and each pair was housed in separate biocontainment accommodation. In each pair, the pup with the highest MDA was vaccinated and the other left as an unvaccinated sentinel. All vaccinates were given a single dose of one of the vaccines. Vaccinates and sentinels were then bled every 2–4 days and CPV antibody was measured. Daily rectal swabs were also collected from all pups to identify any shed vaccinal CPV. Results: All the pups vaccinated with Nobivac DP PLUS seroconverted, with significantly higher antibody titres compared to the pups in other vaccine groups, all shed vaccine virus, and all bar one of the sentinel pups seroconverted. In the other groups, only vaccinated pups with lower levels of MDA seroconverted and shed vaccine virus but none of the sentinel pups seroconverted. Conclusions: Different canine parvovirus vaccines differ in their ability to replicate in and immunise puppies with MDA, the levels of which may vary widely between individuals. The shedding of vaccinal CPV is an important consideration when designing studies to demonstrate efficacy in MDA-positive puppies. Full article

Differences in Personal Recovery Among Individuals with Severe Mental Disorders in Private and Supported Accommodations: An Exploratory Study

People with severe mental disorders (SMD) face long-term functional impairments requiring integrated, community-based, recovery-oriented care. Italy provides two main housing models for people with SMD: private accommodation (PA) and supported accommodation (SA). This exploratory study investigated differences in recovery outcomes across these settings using the Mental Health Recovery Star (MHRS). A six-month longitudinal study was conducted within the South Verona Community Mental Health Service. Nineteen trained mental health professionals assessed 25 people with SMD (14 in PA, 11 in SA) at baseline (BL) and follow-up (FU) using standardized tools for recovery (MHRS), functioning, psychopathology, functional autonomy, and needs. Group comparisons and within-group changes were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests. At BL, people with SMD in PA showed better functioning (p = 0.040) and fewer needs than those in SA (p = 0.008). Recovery goals differed, with people with SMD in PA focusing on health and networks, while people with SMD in SA emphasized functioning. At FU, people with SMD in PA improved across all MHRS domains (p < 0.001), with significant reductions in symptom severity and unmet needs. People with SMD in SA showed targeted improvements in functioning, autonomy, and MHRS social networks (p < 0.001), with increases in met needs but non-significant changes in unmet needs. When comparing PA and SA at FU, the differences were relatively modest. Recovery is achievable in both housing settings, although outcomes differ. People with SMD in PA experienced broader improvements, while people with SMD in SA progressed in their prioritized areas, likely reflecting more complex initial needs. These findings underscore the value of aligning recovery-oriented care with the specific needs and contexts of different residential settings. Further research is needed to confirm and expand these results. Full article

Ambrosia beetles have evolved specialized structures termed “mycangia”, which house and transport symbiotic microbes. Microbial partners include at least one obligate mutualistic filamentous fungus used as food for larvae and adults, and potentially secondary filamentous fungi, yeasts, and bacteria. Beetles in the genus Xyleborus possess paired pre-oral mycangial structures located within the head on either side of the mouth parts. Mycangia develop in pupae, with newly emerged adults acquiring partners from the environment. However, information concerning the cellular structure and function of Xyleborus mycangia remains limited. We show that in X. affinis, mycangia are lined with a layer of striated dense material, enclosing layers of insect epithelial cells, with diverse spine-like structures. Larger (5–10 μm) projections were concentrated within and near the entrance of mycangia, with smaller filaments (4–8 μm) within the mycangia itself. Rows of “eyelash” structures lined the inside of mycangia, with fungal cells free-floating or in close association with these projections. Serial sections revealed mandibular articulations, and mandibular, pharyngeal, and labial muscles, along with the mycangial entry/exit channel. Sheets of comb-like spines at the mycangial entrance and opposite the mycangia attached to the roof of the labrum or epipharynx may serve as an interlocking mechanism for opening/closing the mycangia and guiding fungal cells into entry/exit channels. Additionally, mandibular fibra (muscle tissue) potentially enervating and affecting the mechanism of mycangial functioning were noted. These data add crucial mechanistic detail to the model of pre-oral mycangia in Xyleborus beetles, their cellular structures, and how they house and dispense microbial symbionts. Full article

Filial cannibalism is the consumption of one’s own viable progeny. It occurs in a range of taxa but is particularly well-documented in fish species. Since parental care in fishes is typically male-biased, it is usually assumed that filial cannibalism is predominantly performed by the parental male while he is providing care to offspring. Filial cannibalism by females is less studied in fish. Video-recorded observations of ten pairs of adults housed in captivity revealed the first documentation of female filial cannibalism in the redhead goby (Elacatinus puncticulatus). Females were observed consuming both their own eggs and larvae. We discuss non-adaptive and adaptive explanations for female filial cannibalism in the redhead goby, including confinement due to captivity, nutritional or energetic need, and a possible lack of kin recognition. Understanding the evolutionary significance of filial cannibalism exhibited by females is an important biological inquiry. Since the redhead goby is a species used in the aquarium trade, understanding the conditions that influence female filial cannibalism in captivity may yield practical implications. Full article

Food waste is a significant global issue with substantial environmental, economic, and social implications. This exploratory study aimed to evaluate the impact of an educational composting program on reducing food waste generation and promoting proper waste sorting practices within multi-family housing units in San Marcos, Texas. A comprehensive methodology was employed, encompassing pre- and post-intervention waste audits, educational interventions, weekly organic waste collection, and quantitative data analyses. Nine multi-family complexes, spanning student housing, conventional family units, low-income residences, and senior living facilities, were targeted through strategic recruitment efforts and incentivization. The treatment group, consisting of 43 participants, received ongoing education throughout the eight-week implementation period, facilitated through informational resources, feedback mechanisms, and door-to-door organic waste collection. Conversely, the control group did not partake in the educational component. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and paired t-tests, facilitated comparisons across various dimensions, such as housing types, treatment versus control groups, and pre- versus post-intervention periods. The findings revealed significant reductions in organic waste and compostable materials within the treatment group’s weekly landfill trash, underscoring the effectiveness of the educational program. Furthermore, insights into contamination patterns and housing-specific waste characteristics were garnered, informing targeted intervention strategies and policy recommendations for optimizing multi-family composting initiatives. Managing risk, matching resources efficiently, and ensuring fair allocation are fundamental challenges in both finance and decision-making processes. In many scenarios, participants contribute unequally to collective outcomes, raising the question of how to distribute costs, benefits, or opportunities in a justifiable and optimal manner. This paper applies the Shapley value—a solution concept from cooperative game theory—as a principled tool in the following two specific financial settings: first, in tax cooperation games; and second, in assignment markets. In tax cooperation games, we use the Shapley value to determine the equitable tax burden distribution among three firms, A, B, and C, which operate in two countries, Italy and Poland. Our model ensures that countries participating in coalitions face a lower degree of tax evasion compared to non-members, and that cooperating firms benefit from discounted tax liabilities. This structure incentivizes coalition formation and reveals the economic advantage of joint participation. In assignment markets, we use the Shapley value to find the optimal pairing in a four-buyers and four-sellers housing market. Our findings show that the Shapley value provides a rigorous framework for capturing the relative importance of participants in the coalition, leading to more balanced tax allocations and fairer market transactions. Our theoretical insights with computational techniques highlights the Shapley value’s effectiveness in addressing complex allocation challenges across financial management domains. Full article

Athysanini is one of the largest tribes within Deltocephalinae, which is a vast cosmopolitan subfamily of leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) with many genera known to occur in the Neotropical realm. Peruvian forests house up to 16 genera of Athysanini and, so far, are strongly restricted to this region. In this contribution, a new species of the leafhopper genus Andanus Linnavuori, 1959, Andanus acanthophallussp. nov., is described based on pinned museum specimens. Illustrations and a diagnosis for all species to segregate them in the genus are provided. A dichotomous key to all known species and distributional notes are also given. The new species can be easily separated from others by (1) overall color light orange to stramineous, (2) the pronotum lacking marks or transverse medial bands, (3) a row of very long fine setae on the outer lateral margin of the subgenital plate, (4) apophysis of style straight without lateral projection but minute tooth on inner side, and (5) an aedeagal apex bifid with a pair of processes directed anterad and posterad. The valid status and current position of Andanus based on similarities to other Neotropical genera is discussed. Full article

The scientific interest in edible insects as an alternative source of high-value protein for the human diet has increased drastically over the last decade. Edible insects harbour enormous potential in terms of planetary health. Their lower water and land use, lower feed conversion ratios, and overall lower global warming potential paired with a high nutritional value compared with conventional livestock are key drivers towards an environmentally sustainable diet. However, low consumer acceptance, as well as regulatory challenges, have slowed down the success of edible insects in Western countries, despite edible insects being consumed regularly all over the world. To date, four edible insect species have been approved as novel foods in the European Union—namely yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), house cricket (Acheta domesticus), and lesser mealworm (Alphitobius diaperinus). Depending on the species, they have a high protein content (48–67%), with a beneficial indispensable amino acid profile, high fat content (21–39%), with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids based on the dry matter, and contain reasonable amounts of minerals and vitamins. Unlike other animal-based foods, edible insects contain dietary fibre. Data on the bioavailability of nutrients in humans are scarce. Although numerous publications have investigated the nutritional profiles, environmental impacts, and future perspectives of edible insects, here, those findings are reviewed critically, as some publications were partially contradictory or related to selected species only. In this narrative review, we emphasise that edible insects could play a key role in a changing world with a steadily increasing demand for nutritionally valuable food and the depletion of natural resources. Use of pair housing for preweaning calves has shown positive benefits in terms of health and production, with it also being thought to offer social support in times of stress such as when calves are disbudded. Calf disbudding through thermal cautery is a common procedure, with recognized physiological and behavioral implications. This study’s objective was to utilize continuous monitoring accelerometers to compare the impact of disbudding on the behavior of pair and individually housed calves. Data from an all-year-round dairy herd in the southwest of England were collected via an accelerometer (ABS breeder tag, Genus, Cheshire, UK) fitted to a forelimb of a convenience subset of calves (n = 265) within two weeks of age. Data were collected between March and December 2020 and covered the period 7 days prior to disbudding until 30 days post disbudding. Calves underwent thermal cautery disbudding by farm staff using local anesthesia and a systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Data from 205 calves (125 pair-housed and 80 individually housed) were included in analysis through generalized estimating equations models. The calf activity (p = 0.98), number of lying bouts (p = 0.40), and lying time per day (p = 0.75) were not associated with the housing treatment of the calves. Calf activity was associated with the day compared to disbudding (p < 0.001), with both housing treatments having decreased activity in the days following disbudding, taking approximately 14 days to return to pretreatment levels. Pneumonia and diarrhea are the leading causes of death in children under 5 globally, worsened by viral infections. This study investigates viral agents in children ≤ 3 years with respiratory illness and diarrhea in Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil, during spring 2021. Twenty paired samples (oropharyngeal swab and feces) were tested using in-house qPCR for HBoV and HAdV, RT-qPCR for RVA, EV, PeV-A, and NoV, and a commercial RT-qPCR kit for SARS-CoV-2, Flu A/B, and RSV. HAstV was detected with conventional nested (RT)-PCR. Positive samples were sequenced for molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis. Seven viruses were identified: HBoV, NoV, HAdV, PeV-A, EV, RSV, and Flu A. HBoV and NoV were detected in 75% of cases, with co-infection in 65% of patients, indicating their involvement in the gastro-respiratory illness. Genotyping of HBoV (HBoV-1), NoV (GII.4_Sydney[P16], GII.2[P16], and GII.4_Sydney[P31]), EV (Coxsackievirus A6), HAdV (species C, type 6), and PeV-A (genotype 1) showed local virus diversity. Phylogenetic analysis indicated no ongoing community outbreak, with distinct clusters observed. The findings highlight the overlap of respiratory and enteric diseases, revealing local viral diversity and high exposure to enteric viruses. This underscores the challenges in differential diagnosis and the need for syndromic surveillance. Full article

Background: This study encapsulates an in-depth correlation analysis for the biological activities (cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, and α-amylase inhibition) vs. the phytochemical classes (flavonoids “FV” and alkaloid “AL”) present in fenugreek seed extract. Methodology: Cell cultures for different cell lines were used to assess the cytotoxicity and selectivity (IC50 value), agar diffusion assay was used to determine the MIC and MBC for different bacteria and fungi, whereas α-amylase inhibition was studied to evaluate the antidiabetic potential for the forty-five different origins of fenugreek seed extracts. An in-house analysis for the phytochemical classes of flavonoids (rutin, RT; quercetin, QT; luteolin, LT; kaempferol, KF) and alkaloid (trigonelline, TG) was performed for the seed extracts. Results: A lower IC50 value (14.7 ± 1.46 µg/mL) was recorded for the IR3M extract against the HT29, MCF7 (13.03 ± 1.95 µg/mL), and MRC5 (14.58 ± 2.92 µg/mL) cell line. The extract with the lower IC50 value (8.17 ± 0.73 µg/mL) against HepG2 was IR2M. For the antimicrobial activity, a lower MIC value (6.3 mg/mL) was observed for E2C, E2M, E3C, and I3H extracts against SF and for the E1M, Y3C, IR2H, IR3H, and IR3C extracts against SA. The lowest MBC value (12.5 mg/mL) was seen for E2C, E2M, E3C, and I3H against SF as well as for the extracts E1M, Y3C, IR2H, IR3H, and IR3C against SA. The extracts of Q1H (49.07 ± 2.45 µg/mL) and Y3C (43.65 ± 2.97 µg/mL) exhibited IC50 values comparable to the standard drugs tested for α-amylase inhibition. The statistical models were of Pearson’s correlation. Principal component analysis (PCA) and a paired t-test established a strong positive correlation for the FV (QT, KF, LT) and alkaloid (TG) (p < 0.05) in the biological activities (cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, and α-amylase inhibition), thereby suggesting a substantial role for these phytochemical classes in the traditional and medicinal uses of fenugreek seeds. Conclusions: The FV and alkaloid are the key to impart the biological properties to the fenugreek seeds, hence their presence is utmost in the fenugreek seeds. This research work may be used as marker to help authenticate the fenugreek seeds for the quality variation in the major phytochemical classes. Full article

The consumption of edible insects is a promising approach to meet the increasing global demand for food. Commercialization of edible insects in the EU is regulated by the Novel Food regulation. To date, the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor larva), the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), the house cricket (Acheta domesticus), and the buffalo worm (Alphitobius diaperinus larva) have been authorized in the EU for human consumption. We aimed to develop a method based on DNA barcoding and high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis for the identification and differentiation of these four EU-authorized edible insect species in food. A primer pair previously designed for DNA metabarcoding, targeting a ~200 bp sequence of mitochondrial 16S rDNA, allowed discrimination between the four insect species in highly processed food. However, house cricket and migratory locust could not unambiguously be differentiated from tropical house cricket, desert locust, superworm, cowpea weevil, and sago worm, respectively. This problem could be solved by designing primers specific for house cricket and migratory locust. By combining these primers with the insect primers, additional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products for house cricket and migratory locust were obtained, resulting in more complex melt curves compared to the unauthorized insect species. The optimized PCR-HRM assay is a very cost-efficient screening tool for authentication of EU-authorized edible insect species in food. Full article

Body Temperature Detection of Group-Housed Pigs Based on the Pairing of Left and Right Ear Roots in Thermal Images

Body temperature is a critical indicator of pig health. This study proposes a non-contact method for detecting body temperature in group-housed pigs by extracting temperature data from thermal images of ear roots. Thermal images in the drinking trough area were captured using a thermal camera, with real-time data transmitted to a monitoring room via optical fibers. The YOLO v11m-OBB model was utilized to detect the ear root areas with oriented bounding boxes, while a novel algorithm, the two-stage left and right ear root pairing algorithm (YOLO TEPA-OBB), paired the ear roots of individual pigs using center distance clustering and angular relationships in a polar coordinate system. The maximum temperature of the ear roots was extracted to represent the body temperature. Experimental results based on 749 ear roots show that the YOLO TEPA-OBB achieves 98.7% precision, 98.4% recall, and 98.7% mean average precision (mAP) in detecting ear roots, with an ear root pairing accuracy of 98.1%. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between predicted and reference temperatures is 0.989, with a mean bias of 0.014 °C and a standard deviation of 0.103 °C. This research facilitates real-time body temperature monitoring and precise health management for group-housed pigs. Full article

Multiview clustering (MVC) is a proven, effective approach to boosting the various downstream tasks given by unlabeled data. In contemporary society, domain-specific multiview data, such as multiphase postoperative liver tumor contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images, may be vulnerable to exploitation by illicit organizations or may not be comprehensively collected due to patient privacy concerns. Thus, these can be modeled as incomplete multiview clustering (IMVC) problems. Most existing IMVC methods have three issues: (1) most methods rely on paired views, which are often unavailable in clinical practice; (2) directly predicting the features of missing views may omit key features; and (3) recovered views still have subtle differences from the originals. To overcome these challenges, we proposed a novel framework named fuzzy clustering combined with information theory arithmetic based on feature reconstruction (FCITAFR). Specifically, we propose a method for reconstructing the characteristics of prevailing perspectives for each sample. Based on this, we utilized the reconstructed features to predict the missing views. Then, based on the predicted features, we used variational fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM) combined with information theory to learn the mutual information among views. The experimental results indicate the advantages of FCITAFR in comparison to state-of-the-art methods, on both in-house and external datasets, in terms of accuracy (ACC) (77.5%), normalized mutual information (NMI) (37.9%), and adjusted rand index (ARI) (29.5%). There has been long-standing debate as to whether Kami Fumi-e (paper images to be trampled on) had actually been used in image trampling sessions as part of the 250-year persecution of Christianity enforced by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Sacred images of Christianity officially recorded to have been trampled on are housed in the permanent collection of the Tokyo National Museum and are almost uniquely made of metal alloy. The controversy regarding paper images, apart from the medium being considered unsuitable for such extreme use, was fueled by the appearance of a significant number of them in museum collections and institutions worldwide in the 20th century. Most of the prints bear dates from different eras of the Edo period, sometimes hundreds of years apart; therefore, long-standing arguments regarding their authenticity marked the last century. In order to distinguish later copies from potentially original pieces, if ever existed, XRF, Raman, and FTIR analytical techniques were used to study the materials characterizing them. In addition, detailed observation of the main visual features (overall design composition, inscriptions, paper support, etc.) was carried out to highlight potential discrepancies that could pair with scientific evidence and lead to a definitive conclusion.
