To meet the demand for high-capacity indoor wireless access in future 6G systems, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonics-aided D-band wireless transmission scheme operating at 138 GHz. At the transmitter, two external-cavity lasers together with an I/Q modulator are used to generate a modulated D-band carrier. At the receiver, homodyne down-conversion is employed to directly recover the received signal to baseband, thereby relaxing the requirements on ultra-wideband analog components and high-speed sampling hardware. A 20 m indoor line-of-sight wireless link is established to transmit a 56-Gbaud-rate OFDM-QPSK signal. The transmitted and received spectra, received constellations and bit-error-rate (BER) performance are functions of optical power at different symbol rates, and the channel amplitude and phase responses are systematically analyzed. The results show that broadband D-band signal generation, transmission, and recovery can be stably achieved in the proposed system. After receiver-side digital signal processing (DSP), clear QPSK constellations are obtained. BER measurements reveal an optimal optical-power operating range, and the 32-GBaud OFDM signal outperforms the 56-Gbaud-rate signal because its narrower occupied bandwidth makes it less sensitive to frequency-selective distortion. For 56-Gbaud-rate OFDM transmission, the BER approaches the 20% low-density parity-check forward-error-correction threshold at an optical power of approximately −1 dBm. Further analysis indicates that the current link performance is mainly limited by frequency-selective amplitude and phase distortions under bandwidth-constrained conditions, together with slight nonlinear effects at high power. These results verify the feasibility of a photonics-aided D-band wireless architecture with homodyne reception for medium-range, high-symbol-rate indoor transmission and provide an experimental basis for future 6G sub-THz wireless links. The rapid development of 6G wireless networks requires ultra-high data rates that traditional microwave frequencies cannot support. Photonics-assisted terahertz (THz) technologies offer a promising solution by combining high-capacity optical fibers with wideband wireless transmission. However, as bandwidth expands, sampling frequency offset (SFO) becomes a critical issue that degrades signal quality in single-carrier systems. This paper evaluates the performance of two main compensation methods within a photonics-assisted THz system operating at 320 GHz. We compare the Gardner clock recovery algorithm and the Digital Interpolation Compensation Algorithm (DICA) across various modulation formats and offset levels. Our findings indicate that the Gardner algorithm is effective for low-order modulation when the SFO is below 100 ppm, but its performance fails outside this range. Conversely, the DICA provides robust compensation up to 1000 ppm regardless of the modulation format, provided that the exact offset value is known. Without proper compensation, the system BER increases significantly as the SFO grows. These results demonstrate the complementary nature of these two algorithms and provide a practical guide for selecting compensation strategies in future high-speed THz communication links. A novel photonics-assisted technique for generating reconfigurable frequency hopping (FH) signals is proposed and demonstrated through optical comb filtering (OCF). The arithmetic progression of frequency difference between OCF passbands and optical frequency comb lines is exploited to enable wavelength selection controlled by an intermediate frequency signal, with ultra-wideband FH signals subsequently being generated through optical heterodyning. Comprehensive theoretical and numerical investigations are conducted, demonstrating the successful generation of diverse FH waveforms including 5-, 10-, and 25-level stepped frequency signals, Costas-coded patterns, as well as complex wideband signals such as 30 GHz linear frequency modulated and 24 GHz sinusoidal chirped waveforms. Critical system considerations including laser frequency stability, FH speed, and parameter optimization are examined. Wide tunable bandwidth exceeding 30 GHz, good stability, and inherent compatibility with photonic integration is achieved, showing significant potential for advanced applications in cognitive radio and modern radar systems where high-performance frequency-agile signal generation is required. This research presents a novel approach to 28 GHz impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmission using pulse position modulation (PPM) over an analog radio-over-fiber (ARoF) link, investigating the impact of fiber-based fronthaul on the overall performance of the communication system. In this setup, an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) is employed for PPM signal generation, while demodulation is performed with a commercial time-to-digital converter (TDC) based on an event timer. To enhance the reliability of transmitted reference PPM (TR-PPM) signals, the transmission system integrates Gray coding and Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS)-standard-compliant Reed-Solomon (RS) error correcting code (ECC). System performance was evaluated by transmitting pseudorandom binary sequences (PRBSs) and measuring the bit error ratio (BER) across a 5-m wireless link between two 20 dBi gain horn (Ka-band) antennas, with and without a 20 km single-mode optical fiber (SMF) link in transmitter side and ECC at the receiver side. The system achieved a BER of less than 8.17 × 10−7, using a time bin duration of 200 ps and a pulse duration of 100 ps, demonstrating robust performance and significant potential for space-to-ground telecommunication applications. This paper presents an integrated tunable hybrid multi-laser module designed to simultaneously generate multiple radiofrequency (RF) local oscillator (LO) signals through optical heterodyning. The device consists of five hybrid InP/Si3N4 integrated lasers, each incorporating an intracavity wavelength-selective optical filter formed by two micro-ring resonators. Through beating the wavelengths generated from three of these lasers, we demonstrate the simultaneous generation of two LO signals within bands crucial for satellite communications (SatCom): one in the Ka-band and the other in the V-band. The device provides an extensive wavelength tuning range across the entire C-band and exhibits exceptionally narrow optical linewidths, below 40 kHz in free-running mode. This results in ultra-wideband tunable RF signals with narrow electrical linewidths below 100 kHz. The system is compact and highly scalable, with the potential to generate up to 10 simultaneous LO signals, being a promising solution for advanced RF signal generation in high throughput satellite payloads. In this study, an ultra-wideband actively tunable terahertz absorber composed of four identical arc-shaped structures made of phase transition material vanadium dioxide (VO2) is presented. A metal ground plane is placed at the bottom and an insulating spacer (quartz) as the middle dielectric layer. Simulation results demonstrate 90% absorption with a broad bandwidth spanning 3 THz (2.7 THz–5.7 THz) under normal incidence. The proposed structure transforms from a reflector to an absorber by changing the conductivity from 200 S/m to 2 × 105 S/m; the absorbance at peak frequencies can be consistently tuned from 4% to 100%. Absorption spectra demonstrate that the polarization angle does not affect the response of the proposed structure. Power loss density (PLD) and impedance-matching theory are further analyzed to learn more about the physical origin of ultra-wide absorption. The ultra-wide operating bandwidth, high absorption efficiency, active tunability, and independence of polarization make the proposed structure an excellent candidate for integration into profound THz applications such as sensors, modulators, and optic-electro switches. Metamaterial absorbers are very attractive due to their significant absorption behavior at optical wavelengths, which can be implemented for energy harvesting, plasmonic sensors, imaging, optical modulators, photovoltaic detectors, etc. This paper presents a numerical study of an ultra-wide-band double square ring (DSR) metamaterial absorber (MMA) for the complete visible optical wavelength region, which is designed with a three-layer (tungsten-silicon dioxide-tungsten) substrate material. Due to the symmetricity, a polarization-insensitive absorption is obtained for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes by simulation. An absorption above 92.2% and an average absorption of 97% are achieved in the visible optical wavelength region. A peak absorption of 99.99% is achieved at 521.83 nm. A wide range of oblique incident angle stabilities is found for stable absorption properties. A similar absorption is found for different banding angles, which may occur due to external forces during the installation of the absorber. The absorption is calculated by the interference theory (IT) model, and the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is also validated to verify the perfect MMA. The electric field and magnetic field of the structure analysis are performed to understand the absorption property of the MMA. The presented MMA may be used in various applications such as solar cells, light detection, the biomedical field, sensors, and imaging. Full article

This paper presents a new scheme of a cost-effective tunable millimeter-wave (MMW) frequency synthesizer based on an ultra-wideband electro-optic frequency comb. The architecture for the quasi-tunable millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer mainly consists of a compact ultra-wide flat electro-optic frequency comb and a multi-tone frequency generator, which only includes a quantum dot mode-locked laser, a LiNbO3 dual-driving Mach–Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM) and Uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD). MMW signals generated with a quasi-tunable frequency are experimentally demonstrated. The difference in power is obtained for the different frequencies. The linewidth of the quasi-tunable frequency signals is less than 273 Hz. In addition, the single side band (SSB) phase noise of the 25, 37.5, 50 and 75 GHz is measured as −115, −106, −102 and −95 dBc/Hz at an offset of 1 kHz, respectively. The proposed frequency synthesizer has ultra-low phase noise, quasi-tunable frequency and simple structure. The research results of the frequency synthesizer are applied for 5G+ transmission with radio wave working at K-band and V-band. The flexible, compact and robust MMW frequency synthesizer is suitable for the future of ultra-high capacity 5G+ communication. Full article

In recent years, the field of nanophotonics has progressively developed. However, constant demand for the development of new light source still exists at the nanometric scale. Light emissions from graphene-based active materials can provide a leading platform for the development of two dimensional (2-D), flexible, thin, and robust light-emitting sources. The exceptional structure of Dirac’s electrons in graphene, massless fermions, and the linear dispersion relationship with ultra-wideband plasmon and tunable surface polarities allows numerous applications in optoelectronics and plasmonics. In this article, we present a comprehensive review of recent developments in graphene-based light-emitting devices. Light emissions from graphene-based devices have been evaluated with different aspects, such as thermal emission, electroluminescence, and plasmons assisted emission. Theoretical investigations, along with experimental demonstration in the development of graphene-based light-emitting devices, have also been reviewed and discussed. Moreover, the graphene-based light-emitting devices are also addressed from the perspective of future applications, such as optical modulators, optical interconnects, and optical sensing. Finally, this review provides a comprehensive discussion on current technological issues and challenges related to the potential applications of emerging graphene-based light-emitting devices. We propose a tunable magnetic fluid-filled hybrid photonic crystal fiber mode converter. Innovative design principles based on the hybrid connected dual-core photonic crystal fiber and magnetically modulated optical properties of magnetic fluid are developed and numerically verified. The mode converter was designed to convert LP11 in the index-guiding core to the LP01 mode in the photonic bandgap-guiding core. By introducing the magnetic fluid into the air-hole located at the center of the photonic bandgap-guiding core, the mode converter can realize a high coupling efficiency and an ultra-wide bandwidth. The coupling efficiency can reach up to 99.9%. At a fixed fiber length, by adjusting the strength of the magnetic field, the coupling efficiency can reach up to 90% and 95% at wavelengths in the ranges of 1.33 µm–1.85 µm and 1.38 µm–1.75 µm, with bandwidth values reaching 0.52 µm and 0.37 µm, respectively. Moreover, it has a good manufacturing flexibility. The mode converter can be used to implement wideband mode-division multiplexing of few-mode optical fiber for high-capacity telecommunications. This paper reports on a pulsed coding technique based on optical Ultra-wideband (UWB) modulation for wireless implantable biotelemetry systems allowing for high data rate link whilst enabling significant power reduction compared to the state-of-the-art. This optical data coding approach is suitable for emerging biomedical applications like transcutaneous neural wireless communication systems. The overall architecture implementing this optical modulation technique employs sub-nanosecond pulsed laser as the data transmitter and small sensitive area photodiode as the data receiver. Moreover, it includes coding and decoding digital systems, biasing and driving analogue circuits for laser pulse generation and photodiode signal conditioning. The complete system has been implemented on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and prototype Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with discrete off-the-shelf components. By inserting a diffuser between the transmitter and the receiver to emulate skin/tissue, the system is capable to achieve a 128 Mbps data rate with a bit error rate less than 10−9 and an estimated total power consumption of about 5 mW corresponding to a power efficiency of 35.9 pJ/bit. These results could allow, for example, the transmission of an 800-channel neural recording interface sampled at 16 kHz with 10-bit resolution. Full article

The wide band at extremely high frequencies (EHF) above 30 GHz is applicable for high resolution directive radars, resolving the lack of free frequency bands within the lower part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Utilization of ultra-wideband signals in this EHF band is of interest, since it covers a relatively large spectrum, which is free of users, resulting in better resolution in both the longitudinal and transverse dimensions. Noting that frequencies in the millimeter band are subjected to high atmospheric attenuation and dispersion effects, a study of the degradation in the accuracy and resolution is presented. The fact that solid-state millimeter and sub-millimeter radiation sources are producing low power, the method of continuous-wave wideband frequency modulation becomes the natural technique for remote sensing and detection. Millimeter wave radars are used as complementary sensors for the detection of small radar cross-section objects under bad weather conditions, when small objects cannot be seen by optical cameras and infrared detectors. Theoretical analysis for the propagation of a wide “chirped” Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar signal in a dielectric medium is presented. It is shown that the frequency-dependent (complex) refractivity of the atmospheric medium causes distortions in the phase of the reflected signal, introducing noticeable errors in the longitudinal distance estimations, and at some frequencies may also degrade the resolution.
