In Paul Dukas’s opera, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, when the captive wives are allowed to leave their confinement, they refuse to do so and remain with their aggressor. This narrative raises a central question: why do some women remain in violent contexts even when apparent pathways for escape exist? This scoping review aims at analysing the psychological and social mechanisms of coercion employed by those who perpetrate violence, clearly stating the focus on the responsibility of the perpetrator and exploring diverse relationship settings. A total of 31 articles from diverse disciplines such as social psychology, sociology, education, and studies on coercive control have been examined to provide insight into: (1) the psychological and (2) social coercion mechanisms and (3) the influence of gender socialisation on perpetuating the subjugation of women. These mechanisms are analysed transversally across intimate partner relationships and coercive family and community systems. Findings reveal that across these geographically, culturally, and religiously diverse settings, as well as across the diverse relationships analysed, similar patterns of psychological and social coercion exist that are framed and reinforced by a gendered socialisation rooted in patriarchal gender roles. The tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta) is recognized as a highly destructive pest affecting members of the Solanaceae family, particularly tomato crops, where infestations may cause total crop loss. Its rapid spread and increasing resistance to chemical insecticides underscore the urgent need for innovative, environmentally compatible control strategies. In this context, the present study investigates the bioactivity of surface extracts derived from four Salvia species (S. buchananii, S. corrugata, S. discolor, and S. namaensis) against T. absoluta larvae, focusing on their insecticidal and feeding-deterrent effects. Chemical characterization through LC–MS analysis demonstrated that these Salvia species contain diverse secondary metabolites, including diterpenoids, triterpenoids, and flavonoids. Initial screening using a leaf-dip bioassay at a concentration of 2.50 mg/mL showed that S. discolor was particularly effective among the Salvia extracts tested. Subsequent dose–response assays with S. discolor extracts (0.16–5.00 mg/mL) confirmed strong larvicidal and feeding inhibitory effects, with LC50 and FI50 values of 0.12 and 0.13 mg/mL, respectively. Additionally, weak inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was observed, suggesting a minor contribution of neurotoxic effects to the overall activity of the extract. The findings suggest that S. discolor extracts may be useful for managing T. absoluta infestations, pending evaluation of their effects on non-target organisms. Full article

As cultural heritage representation increasingly shifts toward immersive and spatial experiences, mixed reality (MR) has emerged as an embodied medium for combining real settings with virtual content. However, numerous existing cultural scenarios remain site-specific and difficult to reconfigure or transfer across contexts. To address this limitation, this study proposes a prototype-based framework. Using traditional Chinese opera as a case study, the generative approach translates the representative graphics into parametric geometries and embeds them in two modular systems: block and panel. Through MR overlay, the modules were fabricated as physical prototypes and integrated with interactive cultural elements. To evaluate the framework, deployment and user testing were conducted in Portugal and Italy. The experimental results show that the framework supports rapid assembly, flexible spatial transformation, and digital access while retaining the prototype structure. Participants’ feedback indicates positive usability, favorable experiential responses, and increased interest associated with opera engagement. Overall, the study demonstrates the adaptive potential of parametric modular aggregation for facilitating deployable MR experiences, contributing a methodological reference for cultural communication. A micro-commission from Signal Film & Media, Barrow-in-Furness, initiated a two-year dialogue between artist/filmmaker Laurence Campbell and ecological artist David Haley. They started with the question, ‘How did such a small stream serve the development of such a large industrial town?’ Their eco-poetic, video/sonic exploration became a freshwater odyssey, discovering the blood of extinction (chalybeate-polluted water) through arterial tributaries, from deep time to 19th-century extraction to today. Their inquiry was informed by the Cumbria Archives, a local environmental conservationist, a poet and opera singer and passersby. The emergent art form revealed a complex set of ecological narratives. The project continues to raise questions about our relationships with the Nature–Climate–Culture Emergency, and the nuclear, defence, mining and water industries. Full article

The recovery of antioxidant compounds from agri-food by-products represents a sustainable strategy for active packaging production. However, the compatibility between natural extracts and film-forming techniques plays a key role in determining film formation and properties. In this work, antioxidant extracts obtained from spent coffee grounds and tomato waste were incorporated into zein-based films produced using two different techniques. The objective was to investigate how extract type and processing technique influence film morphology, wettability, thickness, and mechanical properties. The results demonstrated a strong processing-dependent compatibility between extract composition and production techniques. Spent coffee ground extract was successfully incorporated into compact cast films, while tomato waste extract did not allow the formation of homogeneous cast films and required electrospinning to obtain uniform fibrous structures. The incorporation of spent coffee ground extract significantly increased surface wettability and film stiffness, with Young’s modulus reaching 695 MPa. In contrast, electrospun films containing tomato waste extract exhibited lower tensile strength due to their porous fibrous structure, although uniform fibers were obtained. These findings demonstrate that extract chemistry critically affects the suitability of the processing technique and provide useful guidelines for the design of sustainable zein-based active packaging systems derived from agri-food waste valorization. China and Italy both possess rich operatic traditions, yet both encounter challenges in sustaining engagement among younger generations. This study investigates how infrastructural conditions influencing young audiences’ willingness to experience with traditional opera through a comparative study of two cultural contexts. Drawing on focus group interviews with participants across both countries, the research examines three interrelated theoretical dimensions: accessibility, experience, and mediation. Through systematic qualitative content analysis, the results indicate that while both Chinese and Italian participants recognized opera as a culturally significant art form, their participation modes differed. In China, attendance was often perceived as a planned and formal activity tied to modern cultural districts, with a strong reliance on media support to reduce entry barriers. In Italy, opera was described as embedded in historical urban environments and social routines, prioritizing the preservation of live performance integrity, maintained through continuity and familiarity. Such findings define opera engagement as a process shaped by interwoven access, experiential, and mediating infrastructures. Overall, this research identifies the needs of young opera audiences in both countries and offers cross-national perspectives for theatrical institutions, aiming to enhance operations and global communication of traditional opera. Objectives: This study aimed to analyse the effects of educational levels, sex, and residence on tinnitus-related distress, as well as the severity of depression and anxiety. Material and methods: A total of 235 patients with primary subjective tinnitus participated in the study. These patients underwent thorough evaluations in otorhinolaryngology and audiology. Additionally, all patients completed the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaires. Results: Patients with a primary school education scored significantly higher on the functional (F) subscale of the THI. When examining depression and anxiety levels, it was observed that patients with a primary school education exhibited the highest levels of anxiety, whereas those with a university education displayed the highest levels of depression. When analysing the effects of residency, slightly lower total THI scores were observed in individuals living in metropolitan areas. When comparing the subscale results of the THI, patients residing in metropolitan areas exhibited significantly lower scores on the F subscale. In terms of the total BDI and GAD-7 scores, there were no statistically significant differences observed. Women had slightly higher scores on the BDI and GAD-7, without statistical differences. However, women had significantly higher total THI scores. Additionally, women exhibited statistically significantly higher scores on the catastrophic (C) subscale. However, the results for the F and emotional (E) subscales did not show any statistically significant differences. There was no correlation between age and the THI, BDI, or GAD-7 scores. Conclusions: The results of this study reveal significant differences in tinnitus distress based on sex, educational levels, and residence locations, along with the presence of psychiatric symptoms, which should also be considered in tinnitus management. Background: Locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) management has evolved, but surgery (total mesorectal excision, TME) remains the curative cornerstone. Total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) and organ preservation (OP) have emerged as response-adaptive strategies. We conducted a state-of-the-art systematic review to critically appraise TNT efficacy, trade-offs, OP feasibility, and emerging biomarkers. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and EMBASE (1990–March 2026) plus ASCO/ESMO abstracts (2020–2026). We included phase II/III randomised controlled trials and major prospective studies evaluating neoadjuvant strategies in non-metastatic LARC. Risk of bias was assessed using RoB 2. Given heterogeneity, a narrative synthesis was performed (PROSPERO: CRD420251252675). Results: From 2847 records, 45 publications (30 trials) were included. For high-risk LARC (cT4, cN2, EMVI+, MRF+, tumour deposits), TNT improves disease-free survival and reduces distant metastases versus standard chemoradiotherapy (RAPIDO, PRODIGE 23, STELLAR, TNTCRT). However, TNT increases locoregional recurrence risk with short-course radiotherapy (RAPIDO: 10% vs. 6%; Polish II: no sustained overall survival benefit). Organ preservation is achievable in expert centres (OPRA: 54% 5-year TME-free survival; OPERA; CAO/ARO/AIO-16), but surgery remains the durable standard for most patients. De-escalation (PROSPECT, CONVERT, FOWARC, OCUM) avoids radiotherapy in low-risk (mrMRF−) patients without compromising local control. Lateral pelvic lymph node involvement (LPLN+) remains a negative prognostic factor even after TNT. Immunotherapy added to TNT (UNION, STELLAR II, SPRING-01, PRECAM) increases pCR rates (40–60%) but remains investigational. ctDNA-guided adaptation (CINTS-R) is feasible but requires mature data. Conclusions: Surgery (TME) is the definitive curative treatment for LARC. TNT is a preferred intensification strategy for high-risk patients, but trade-offs between systemic and local control must be individualised. Organ preservation is safe only for selected patients in expert centres. Immunotherapy-TNT combinations and ctDNA guidance are promising but not yet standard. This review provides an evidence-based roadmap for integrating these advances without losing sight of surgery’s central role. Full article

Opera Out of Opera 2 (OOO2) is a Creative Europe cooperation project that experiments with digital, participatory strategies to reconnect opera with younger audiences and to reshape professional capacity for conservatory students. Rather than treating opera as a fixed repertoire to be transmitted, the project frames it as a site of co-creation, where youth and emerging professionals share agency in how the art form is presented, mediated and discussed. This article has two related aims. First, it examines how OOO2’s digital-first Audience Engagement Strategy (AES) may contribute to audience development among 18–25-year-olds, focusing on reach, participation patterns and perceived accessibility. Second, it investigates how participation in the project appears to affect conservatory students’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy and their understanding of their potential social role as musicians. Methodologically, the study combines a participatory action research (PAR) framework with an embedded single-case design. Quantitative data include pre- and post-intervention questionnaires with 132 higher music education students. An audience survey completed by 1256 spectators, complemented by social media and web analytics, is also embedded. Qualitative material derives from semi-structured interviews (n = 30), focus groups with project stakeholders and direct observation of workshops, rehearsals and performances. Results indicate a marked digital reach among younger audience and suggest that shorter formats, informal settings and second-screen mediation can lower perceived barriers to opera attendance for first-time or occasional spectators. Among students, mean scores for entrepreneurial self-efficacy increased from 3.2 (SD = 0.8) to 4.1 (SD = 0.7), corresponding to a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.20, p < 0.01), a pattern broadly consistent with research on self-efficacy and capacity creation in music and arts-based entrepreneurship education. The discussion connects these findings with a bibliometric mapping of audience development in opera, conducted on 147 Scopus-indexed documents, and argues that OOO2 occupies a still under-theorized intersection between youth-centred cultural participation and entrepreneurial capacity-building in higher music education. While the single-case design and the use of self-constructed survey items limit generalizability, the project may offer a useful reference point for institutions seeking to rethink opera’s approach as a digitally mediated, socially engaged and educationally meaningful practice. This study applies Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory as an analytical framework to examine the development of Peking opera along the Beijing Central Axis during the Qing Dynasty. It explores how the interaction between the court and folk fields contributed to the formation of its artistic form. From this perspective, social space is understood as a structured network of objective relations, shaped by the distribution of different forms of capital and the habitus of social actors. In the Qing Dynasty, as the core of political and cultural activities, the Peking opera field along the Beijing Central Axis was divided into two major sub-fields: the court field, centered around imperial power and subject to political discipline, and the folk field, market-oriented and following secular logic. By analyzing the differences between the two fields in terms of core power, spatial characteristics, capital distribution, and the habits of actors, this study reveals their two-way interaction achieved through the movement of artists, adaptation of repertoires, and capital conversion. The interaction between the two fields was not symmetrical: while the folk field contributed performative vitality and responsiveness to audience demand, the court provided institutional authority and symbolic legitimacy. Ultimately, in the dynamic balance between power and the market, the unique form of Peking opera, characterized by the integration of elegance and vulgarity, is refined. This study deepens our understanding of the interaction between spatial organization and artistic form, while further elucidating how power, culture, and art were structurally interconnected in the Qing Dynasty through the framework of field, capital, and habitus. In doing so, it offers both theoretical insights and empirical evidence for interdisciplinary research on the social and cultural functions of traditional art. Full article

This paper introduces a novel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) employing a passive noise-shaping (NS) technique combined with a chopper-stabilized comparator, enhancing performance and reducing ripple factor while maintaining low power consumption. The NS architecture is built on a cascade-integrator feedforward (CIFF) structure, using both infinite- and finite-impulse response filters to minimize quantization and kT/C noise. Additionally, it employs a low-power two-stage chopper amplifier to compensate for the offset voltage and enhance system stability. Validated according to the 180 nm CMOS process, the proposed ADC has an effective number of bits of 10.6, a signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio of 68.4 dB, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 59.33 dB. With a compact area of 0.17 mm2 and a power consumption of 650 µW from a 1.8 V supply, the proposal is well suited to biomedical sensor applications requiring strict accuracy and low energy consumption. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a biodegradable biopolymer widely used in advanced drug delivery systems (DDSs) due to its biocompatibility, controllable degradation behavior, and tunable physicochemical properties. Its degradation into naturally metabolized lactic and glycolic acids makes PLGA particularly attractive for biomedical applications, positioning PLGA nanoparticles as versatile carriers that bridge material design and therapeutic delivery. In this context, electrospray (electrohydrodynamic atomization) has emerged as an innovative and scalable processing technique that enables precise control over nanoparticle size, morphology, and internal structure under mild conditions, which is particularly suitable for engineering biopolymer-based DDSs. This review provides a comprehensive overview of electrospray-fabricated PLGA nanoparticles, with emphasis on the relationship between processing conditions, polymer structure, and functional performance. The fundamental mechanisms governing drug release, including diffusion, polymer degradation, and their combined effects, are discussed in relation to PLGA properties. The influence of electrospray parameters on nanoparticle formation, morphology, and internal architecture is analyzed, highlighting how process–structure–property relationships can be tailored to achieve specific release profiles. Structural design strategies, including single-matrix, core–shell, and surface-functionalized nanoparticles, are further examined as approaches to enable controlled and sequential dual-DDSs. In addition, emerging modeling and computational approaches are briefly discussed as complementary tools for understanding and optimizing nanoparticle behavior. Singapore Hin Ann Thain Hiaw Keng held its centenary celebration in October 2025. As this event utilized pre-existing or temporary venues, it offers a valuable case for exploring how ritual and theatre contribute to the generation of sacred space. Through the observation of Taoist rituals, puppet theatre, and Puxian opera featured in this event, and by drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad, this paper argues that rituals and theatre do not merely occur in pre-existing sacred spaces. Instead, by multiple practices, including spatial planning and the implementation of ritual and theatrical techniques, they transform residences, commercial premises, and public spaces that originally possess secular attributes into spaces that can be experienced and recognized as sacred. Leveraging Confidential Computing to Enhance Data Privacy in Hyperledger Fabric

In this paper, we present a system built on Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) that leverages Confidential Computing (CC) technologies to strengthen data privacy guarantees beyond those achievable through application-level mechanisms alone. While HLF natively supports data confidentiality through Private Collections (PCs), which restrict data visibility to a subset of authorized network participants, these mechanisms do not protect data at the hardware level: a privileged or compromised hosting platform can access plaintext data in memory and on the filesystem irrespective of HLF access control policies. To address this limitation, we integrate CC into HLF by adopting Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) in conjunction with the Gramine framework. This integration enables the execution of HLF components—peer nodes, orderers, Chaincodes and client applications—within Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). Furthermore, to securely grant access to selected data to a trusted third-party software (TPS) external to the blockchain network, we leverage the Remote Attestation (RA) feature provided by CC, as streamlined by Gramine and enforced on a per-request basis, ensuring that only verified enclaves (or “SGX enclaves”) with expected measurements may access private data. In addition, the Sealing mechanism is employed to persistently store cryptographic material required by HLF components on the filesystem while preserving both confidentiality and integrity. Together, PCs, RA, Sealing, and enclave-based execution establish a layered privacy guarantee: PCs enforce application-level data segregation among channel participants; RA provides measurement-based access control for an external TPS; Sealing ensures that cryptographic material and blockchain state remain encrypted on the filesystem; and enclave-based execution protects data in use through hardware-level memory encryption. The proposed system has been applied and experimentally validated in a logistics use case in the Port of Genoa: benchmarks against an experimental HLF deployment demonstrate an average 95th-percentile (p95) performance overhead of approximately 1.3× attributable to SGX memory encryption and Gramine-based enclave execution, whereas an elevated memory usage footprint (33–35 GB per organization) has been measured, mainly due to the Gramine environment: this remains an open direction for future work.
