Health Problems, Unhealthy Behaviors and Occupational Carcinogens Exposures Among Night Shift Brazilian Workers: Results from National Health Survey, 2019

Introduction: Night shift work (NSW) has been increasingly addressed in the scientific literature, as it is considered a probable carcinogen. In this study, we investigated the association of NSW with health problems, unhealthy behaviors, and occupational carcinogens. Methods: Cross-sectional study with a sample of 47,953 workers from the 2019 National Health Survey. NSW prevalence was estimated according to sociodemographic characteristics. To investigate the associations of NSW with all study variables, gender stratified logistic regression models were used. The odds-ratio and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Results: Among men, there was a significant association of NSW with sleep disorders (OR = 1.39; 95% CI: 1.17–1.65), tiredness (OR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.41–2.00), obesity (OR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.20–1.66), unhealthy food consumption (OR = 1.28; 95% CI: 1.12–1.46), handling of radioactive material (OR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.61–3.72), and biological material (OR = 3.18; 95% CI: 3.15–4.80). Among females, NSW was associated with the same variables except obesity, but depressive feelings (OR = 1.35 95% CI: 1.09–1.67), frequent alcohol intake (OR = 1.48; 95% CI: 1.23–1.78), handling of chemical substances (OR = 1.54; OR = 1.54; 95% CI: 1.20–1.97), and passive smoking at work (OR = 1.45; 95% CI: 1.12–1.86) were highly significant. Conclusion: Night shift workers are more vulnerable to occupational carcinogen exposure, experience greater impacts on their well-being, and are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors. These findings should be considered in managing and organizing night work in the workplace. Actions to promote healthy work environments should be encouraged to protect workers’ health. Full article

Improving occupational health and safety (OHS) in the construction industry can contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Yet, workers’ risk-taking behaviors (RTBs) remain a persistent challenge. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Social Information Processing Theory, this study develops and tests a social influence model to examine how foremen’s safety attitudes (SAs) shape workers’ RTBs. Drawing on survey data from 301 construction workers in China, structural equation modeling reveals that foremen’s SAs significantly and negatively predict workers’ RTBs. However, the three dimensions of SAs—cognitive, affective, and behavioral—exert their influence through different pathways. Risk perception (RP) plays a key mediating role, particularly for the cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Furthermore, interpersonal trust (IPT) functions as a significant moderator in some of these relationships. By identifying the micro-social pathways that link foremen’s attitudes to workers’ safety behaviors, this study offers a testable theoretical framework for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly Goals 3 and 8) at the frontline workplace level. The findings provide empirical support for organizations to move beyond rule-based management and instead build more resilient OHS governance systems by systematically cultivating the multidimensional attitudes of frontline leaders. Background: The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) represents an important public health challenge, especially among education workers, whose intense routine can negatively impact eating habits. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with the regular consumption of UPF among employees of the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education (RFEPCT) in Brazil. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, carried out with 1563 education workers. Validated instruments on eating habits (PeNSE), mental health (DASS-21) and quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) were used. The regular consumption of UPF was defined as intake on ≥5 days in the last seven days. The association between the regular consumption of UPF and sociodemographic, occupational, behavioral, mental health and quality of life variables was assessed by Poisson regression with robust variance, generating adjusted prevalence ratios (PRadj) and respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: The regular consumption of UPF was associated mainly with female gender, a lower age group, Southeast and Midwest regions, dissatisfaction with sleep and the body, physical inactivity and poor sleep quality. In addition, the findings suggested a significant relationship between the worst stress scores and soft drinks (PRadj: 2.11; CI: 1.43–3.13), anxiety and soft drinks (PRadj: 1.83; CI: 1.24–2.70) and depression and industrialized/ultra-processed salty foods (PRadj: 2.43; CI: 1.82–3.26). The same was observed in the scores for the worst perception of quality of life, where there was a prevalence of up to 2.32 in the psychological domain and the consumption of industrialized/ultra-processed salty foods. Conclusions: The findings indicate that multiple interrelated factors—individual, psychosocial and occupational—are associated with the consumption of UPF among education workers. These results reinforce the importance of institutional policies that integrate actions to promote dietary health, mental health care and improved working conditions in the education sector. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose significant risks to occupational populations engaged in poultry farming, livestock handling, and live poultry market operations due to frequent exposure to infected animals and contaminated environments. This review synthesizes evidence on AIV exposure patterns and risk factors through a comprehensive analysis of viral characteristics, host dynamics, environmental influences, and human behaviors. The main routes of transmission include direct animal contact, respiratory contact during slaughter/milking, and environmental contamination (aerosols, raw milk, shared equipment). Risks increase as the virus adapts between species, survives longer in cold/wet conditions, and spreads through wild bird migration (long-distance transmission) and live bird trade (local transmission). Recommended control measures include integrated animal–human–environment surveillance, stringent biosecurity measures, vaccination, and education. These findings underscore the urgent need for global ‘One Health’ collaboration to assess risk and implement preventive measures against potentially pandemic strains of influenza A viruses, especially in light of undetected mild/asymptomatic cases and incomplete knowledge of viral evolution. Factors Associated with Successful Smoking Cessation Among Adults in Saudi Arabia—A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose: Smoking is a major preventable cause of illness and death. Quitting smoking can reduce related health complications. Numerous factors, including age, socioeconomic status, smoking habits, and availability of support, influence smoking cessation success. Despite anti-smoking measures and smoking cessation clinics in Saudi Arabia, smoking-related deaths are increasing. This study aimed to identify factors influencing successful smoking cessation among Saudi adults and examine the relationship between cessation methods and success rates. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey targeting Saudi adults who had attempted to quit smoking of all types, whether traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shisha, or others. Success was defined as quitting for at least six months. The data collected included sociodemographic details, smoking history, and experiences with cessation. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with successful cessation. Results: Of 364 participants, 18.4% were successful quitters, with a mean age of 34.94. Occupation was a key predictor; freelance workers had significantly higher odds of unsuccessful quitting (OR = 12.96, 95% CI: 2.08–80.79, p = 0.006). Those who continued smoking despite illness were less likely to quit successfully (OR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.16–4.68, p = 0.018). Early initiation of smoking also negatively impacted cessation success (OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03–1.17, p = 0.006). Successful quitters reported fewer adverse symptoms during their attempts (p = 0.018) and employed behavioral strategies, such as disposing of tobacco products (p < 0.001), avoiding smoking triggers (p = 0.002), and engaging in exercise (p < 0.001). Confidence in quitting significantly contributed to success (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study highlights the role of individual, social, and environmental factors in smoking cessation. Tailored interventions that address socioeconomic, psychological, and lifestyle factors are crucial for enhancing cessation success among Saudi adults. Full article

Background/Objectives: Healthcare workers (HCW) have increased the risk of occupational stress injuries and adverse mental health outcomes, which were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding HCW psychological distress patterns and help-seeking behaviors can inform responsive resource development that may mitigate negative outcomes in future crises. This paper provides insights on monthly trends in HCW distress and support utilization at a large Canadian hospital over a 14-month period. Methods: As part of a hospital-wide wellness initiative during COVID-19, the STEADY program emailed monthly confidential wellness assessments to hospital staff from April 2020 to May 2021. The assessments included screens for burnout, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress, types of support accessed, and demographic information. Repeated cross-sectional data were summarized as monthly proportions and examined alongside longitudinal COVID-19 data. Results: A total of 2498 wellness assessments were submitted (M = ~168 monthly, range: 17–945). Overall, 67% of assessments had at least one positive screen for distress. Average positive screens were 44% for anxiety, 29% for depression, 31% for posttraumatic stress, and 53% for burnout. Despite high distress, most respondents used informal supports (e.g., family/friends), highlighting limited formal support use. Conclusions: HCWs experienced sustained high levels of psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, with burnout remaining a predominant and persistent concern. The limited use of formal support services may indicate barriers to accessing these types of supports. Our findings underscore the need for accessible and acceptable mental health supports for HCW during prolonged crises. Full article

Solar energy is one of the most promising solutions for improving building energy efficiency. Among passive heating systems, the combination of a Trombe wall, phase change materials (PCM), and multi-alveolar structures (MAS) stands out. This configuration enhances the wall’s ability to absorb solar heat and distribute it evenly throughout the interior. This study evaluated thermal comfort by examining the effects of phase change materials and multi-alveolar structures combined with a Trombe wall on the thermal behavior of a building and improving the thermal inertia of brick walls. Numerical simulations using Visual FORTRAN were conducted to evaluate the thermal properties of different configurations under the climatic conditions recorded in Hammam Sousse, Tunisia. The results show that the integration of the Trombe wall and PCM has a significant impact on interior temperature stability, energy consumption, and overall thermal comfort. The combined effect of the MAS and PCM with the Trombe wall improved heat gain in winter and spring, reaching a low thermal damping factor of 40% in March, reducing heating power, and optimizing thermal comfort for occupants. Background/Objectives: Occupational stress is a common issue among academics. This study aims to determine the level of work stress experienced by academics depending on their titles and the relationship between this stress and eating behaviors. Methods: The data for the study were collected through an online survey from 649 academicians working in universities in Türkiye between January and February 2025. This is a cross-sectional study, and the snowball sampling method was used to facilitate high participation rates. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the General Work Stress Scale (GWSS) to assess work stress levels, and the Turkish version of the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire (AEBQ-TR) to evaluate eating behaviors. Results: Among the participants, 47.6% were of normal weight, with an average BMI of 25.85 ± 4.56 kg/m2. The median work stress score of male academicians (17.00) was significantly lower than that of female academicians (21.00) (p < 0.001). Similarly, the median eating behavior score was lower in male academicians (18.55) compared to females (19.78) (p < 0.001). Work stress levels decreased with increasing academic title, with professors reporting the lowest levels of stress (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings indicate that female academics are more likely to engage in emotional eating under stress, whereas male academics tend to alter their dietary preferences by avoiding certain foods. These results underscore the importance of stress management and the promotion of healthy eating habits among academics. Full article

Indoor radon constitutes a public health issue in various regions across the United States as the second leading cause of lung cancer following tobacco smoke. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises radon mitigation interventions for residential buildings with indoor radon concentrations exceeding the threshold level of 4 pCi/L. Despite considerable research assessing the technical effectiveness of radon mitigation systems, there remains a gap in understanding their broader influence on occupant behavior and preferences in residential design. This study aims to investigate the impact of residing in radon-mitigated homes within the Commonwealth of Kentucky—an area known for elevated radon concentrations—on occupants’ preferences regarding healthy home design attributes. The objectives of this research are twofold: firstly to determine if living in radon-mitigated homes enhances occupant awareness and consequently influences their preferences toward health-related home attributes and secondly to quantitatively evaluate and compare the relative significance homeowners assign to health-related attributes such as indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and water quality relative to conventional attributes including home size, architectural style, and neighborhood quality. The overarching purpose is to explore the potential role radon mitigation initiatives may play in motivating occupants towards healthier home construction and renovation practices. Using choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis, this paper compares preferences reported by homeowners from radon-mitigated homes against those from non-mitigated homes. While the findings suggest a relationship between radon mitigation and increased preference for indoor air quality, the cross-sectional design limits causal interpretation, and the possibility of reverse causation—where health-conscious individuals are more likely to seek mitigation—must be considered. The results provide novel insights into how radon mitigation efforts might effectively influence occupant priorities towards integrating healthier design elements in residential environments. Three Decades of Trends in Risk Factors Attributed to Disease Burden in Saudi Arabia: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

Objective: This study aimed to explore the burden attributable to different groups of risk factors (environmental/occupational, behavioral, and metabolic) in Saudi Arabia that were stratified by gender and year and measured by summary exposure values (SEVs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per 100,000. Design: This study was structured as a systematic analysis. Methods: Using the GBD 2021 data, we extracted information on different risk factors attributed to the disease burden in Saudi Arabia to quantify the differences in exposure value (SEV) and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates (per 100,000) between females and males across different years. Results: Over the years, sustained progress in reducing the number of DALYs attributable to specific environmental and occupational risks has been observed, as well as a slight decrease in some behavioral risks. The highest disease burden was attributed to metabolic and behavioral risk factors, with body mass index being the leading risk factor for both genders. Between 1990 and 2021, the age-standardized DALY rate in those with high body mass indices increased by 168.4% and reached 3436.23 (95% UI 1878.7–5031.5) in males and increased by 125.2% to reach 2952.6 (95% UI 1456.9–4.407) in females. The age-standardized SEVs were the highest in females with a high body mass index, reaching an SEV of 57.98 (95% UI: 64.1–49.2), and in males, an SEV of 50.75 (95% UI: 57.1–42.3) was achieved. Regarding their attributable deaths in 2021, metabolic risk factors were identified as the primary contributors to NCD mortality in 2021. Conclusions: These results reveal persistent health disparities between males and females, underscoring the urgent need for gender-specific research, policies, and interventions. Strategies aimed at promoting health and reducing disease burden should acknowledge the unique health challenges encountered by males and females. Full article

Passenger safety remains a primary goal in vehicle engineering, requiring the development of advanced passive safety systems to reduce injuries during collisions. Impact attenuators (particularly for race cars) are a crucial component for the safety of the driver. The impact of the impact attenuator (IA) is demonstrated by the behavior of a seat-belted dummy in a frontal collision with a rigid wall. The aim of this paper is to confirm the qualities of water as a damping agent in the manufacturing of the IA. To reach a conclusion, a theoretical model is used and experimental tests are performed. Once the loads operating on the dummy have been identified, it is confirmed that they fall within the range that the existing requirements recommend. The car is viewed as a structure with a seat-belt-fastened dummy and an impact attenuator. Research is being conducted on a new water-based impact attenuator technology. A frontal collision of the car–dummy assembly was taken into consideration when analyzing the dummy’s behavior in accordance with the criteria. A simulation program was used to calculate the accelerations at various points on the mannequin’s body as well as the force that manifested on the seat belts. So, the good qualities of IAs using water are revealed and support designers in their efforts to obtain better shock behavior. In the simulation, the variation of internal energy accumulated by the vehicle, displacements and velocities of various points on the chassis, as well as the accelerations of the vehicle and the occupant were determined. In the experiment, the vehicle velocities for both test cases were established and used in the simulation, and the accelerations of the vehicle and dummy were measured. The assessment was carried out by comparing experimental and simulation data, focusing on acceleration values recorded on both the dummy and the vehicle. Evaluation criteria such as HIC and ThAC were applied to determine the severity of the impact and the effectiveness of the proposed water-based attenuator. Full article

Despite notable advancements in smart home technologies, residential energy management continues to face critical challenges. These include the complex integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, issues related to data latency, interoperability, and standardization across diverse systems, the inflexibility of centralized control architectures in dynamic environments, and the difficulty of accurately modeling and influencing occupant behavior. To address these challenges, this study proposes an intelligent multi-agent system designed to accurately estimate and control energy consumption in residential buildings, with the overarching objective of optimizing energy usage while maintaining occupant comfort and satisfaction. The methodological approach employed is a hybrid framework, integrating multi-agent system architecture with system dynamics modeling and agent-based modeling. This integration enables decentralized and intelligent control while simultaneously simulating physical processes such as heat exchange, insulation performance, and energy consumption, alongside behavioral interactions and real-time adaptive responses. The system is tested under varying conditions, including changes in building insulation quality and external temperature profiles, to assess its capability for accurate control and estimation of energy use. The proposed tool offers significant added value by supporting real-time responsiveness, behavioral adaptability, and decentralized coordination. It serves as a risk-free simulation platform to test energy-saving strategies, evaluate cost-effective insulation configurations, and fine-tune thermostat settings without incurring additional cost or real-world disruption. The high fidelity and predictive accuracy of the system have important implications for policymakers, building designers, and homeowners, offering a practical foundation for informed decision making and the promotion of sustainable residential energy practices. High Voltage and Train-Surfing Injuries: A 30-Year Retrospective Analysis of High-Voltage Trauma and Its Impact on Cardiac Biomarkers

Background: High-voltage electrical injuries (HVEIs) represent a complex and life-threatening entity, frequently involving multi-organ damage. While traditionally linked to occupational hazards, train surfing—riding on moving trains—and train climbing—scaling stationary carriages—have emerged as increasingly common causes among adolescents. Popularized via social media, these behaviors expose individuals to the invisible danger of electric arcs from 15,000-volt railway lines, often resulting in extensive burns, cardiac complications, and severe trauma. This study presents a 30-year retrospective analysis comparing cardiac biomarkers and clinical outcomes in train-surfing injuries versus work-related HVEIs. Methods: All patients with confirmed high-voltage injury (≥1000 volts) admitted to a Level 1 burn center between 1994 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Exclusion criteria comprised low-voltage trauma, suicide, incomplete records, and external treatment. Clinical and laboratory parameters—including total body surface area (TBSA), Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI), electrocardiogram (ECG) findings, intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stay, mortality, and cardiac biomarkers (creatine kinase [CK], CK-MB, lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], aspartate transaminase [AST], troponin, and myoglobin)—were compared between the two cohorts. Results: Of 81 patients, 24 sustained train-surfing injuries and 57 were injured in occupational settings. Train surfers were significantly younger (mean 16.7 vs. 35.2 years, p = 0.008), presented with greater TBSA (49.9% vs. 17.9%, p = 0.008), higher ABSI scores (7.3 vs. 5.1, p = 0.008), longer ICU stays (53 vs. 17 days, p = 0.008), and higher mortality (20.8% vs. 3.5%). ECG abnormalities were observed in 51% of all cases, without significant group differences. However, all cardiac biomarkers were significantly elevated in train-surfing injuries at both 72 h and 10 days post-injury (p < 0.05), suggesting more pronounced cardiac and muscular damage. Conclusions: Train-surfing-related high-voltage injuries are associated with markedly more severe systemic and cardiac complications than occupational HVEIs. The significant biomarker elevation and critical care demands highlight the urgent need for targeted prevention, public awareness, and early cardiac monitoring in this high-risk adolescent population. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence and key sociodemographic and lifestyle determinants of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype in a large occupational cohort. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype, defined as the simultaneous presence of elevated waist circumference and high triglyceride levels, are major predictors of cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. Despite their clinical relevance, data on their distribution and determinants in large occupational populations remain limited. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 139,634 employed adults (56,352 women and 83,282 men) across Spain, based on standardized clinical evaluations and validated questionnaires assessing physical activity, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, education, and occupational class. Logistic regression models were used to estimate associations with MetS and HTGW. A longitudinal subsample of 40,431 individuals was followed over a 10-year period (2009–2019) to assess trends in metabolic risk phenotypes. Results: Male sex, older age, lower educational attainment, and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors were associated with a higher prevalence of both MetS and the HTGW phenotype. Physical inactivity, low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and alcohol consumption were significantly associated with increased risk. The HTGW phenotype proved useful in identifying high-risk individuals, with a steadily increasing prevalence over time. Conclusions: Sociodemographic disparities and modifiable lifestyle factors significantly influence the prevalence and progression of MetS and HTGW in the Spanish workforce. Preventive strategies should emphasize early workplace screening, promotion of healthy behaviors, and reduction in educational and socioeconomic inequalities to mitigate cardiometabolic risk. Electroactive Poly(amic acid) Films Grafted with Pendant Aniline Tetramer for Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Sensing Applications

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly toxic and corrosive gas generated in numerous industrial and environmental processes; rapid, sensitive detection at low ppm levels is therefore crucial for ensuring occupational safety and protecting public health. This work explores the effect of grafting various loadings of pendant aniline tetramer pendants (PEDA) onto electroactive poly(amic acid) (EPAA) films and evaluates their performance as H2S gas sensors. Comprehensive characterization including ion trap mass spectrometry (Ion trap MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and four-probe conductivity measurements, confirmed successful PEDA incorporation and revealed enhanced electrical conductivity with increasing PEDA content. Gas sensing tests revealed that EPAA3 (3 wt% PEDA) achieved the best overall performance toward 10 ppm H2S, producing a 591% response with a rapid 108 s response time. Selectivity studies showed that the response of EPAA3 to H2S exceeded those for SO2, NO2, NH3, and CO by factors of five to twelve, underscoring its excellent discrimination against common interferents. Repeatability tests over five successive cycles gave a relative standard deviation of just 7.4% for EPAA3, and long-term stability measurements over 16 days in ambient air demonstrated that EPAA3 retained over 80%. These findings establish that PEDA-grafted PAA films combine the processability of poly(amic acid) with the sharp, reversible redox behavior of pendant aniline tetramers, delivering reproducible, selective, and stable H2S sensing. EPAA3, in particular, represents a balanced composition that maximizes sensitivity and durability, offering a promising platform for practical environmental monitoring and industrial safety applications.
