The Impact of Nutritional Status on Survival and Development of Sarcoidosis: A Scoping Review of Current Evidence and Research Gaps

Background: Sarcoidosis is a heterogeneous, multisystem inflammatory disease with an unpredictable clinical course and limited prognostic markers. Increasing attention has focused on nutritional and metabolic factors—particularly obesity, body composition, and calcium–vitamin D metabolism—as potentially modifiable elements associated with disease development and clinical phenotype. However, the available literature remains fragmented and methodologically heterogeneous. Objective: To systematically map current evidence on the relationship between nutritional status and the development, clinical course, and prognosis of sarcoidosis, and to identify key gaps requiring further research. Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published between 2015 and 2025. Eligible studies included adult patients with sarcoidosis and addressed nutritional status broadly defined, encompassing anthropometric measures, body composition, immunonutritional indices, nutrition-related biomarkers, dietary factors, and supplementation practices. Due to substantial heterogeneity in exposure definitions and outcome measures, no quantitative synthesis or formal methodological quality appraisal was performed. Results: Eighteen studies, predominantly observational, were included. The most consistent findings concerned anthropometric parameters, with overweight and obesity showing the strongest association with an increased risk of sarcoidosis and, in selected studies, with reduced exercise capacity and greater disease burden. Evidence linking nutritional status to prognosis was indirect, while direct data on sarcoidosis-specific survival were lacking. Disturbances in calcium–vitamin D metabolism were frequent and clinically relevant, particularly in the context of supplementation-related hypercalcemia. Conclusions: Current evidence suggests that nutritional status—particularly excess body weight—and selected metabolic and immunonutritional factors are associated with sarcoidosis. However, given the largely observational nature of the available data and the lack of formal assessment of methodological quality, these results should be interpreted as association mapping and hypothesis generation rather than as evidence of causality. Well-designed prospective and interventional studies using standardized nutritional assessment tools and clinically relevant endpoints are needed to clarify the role of nutritional factors in sarcoidosis. The circadian cycle regulates metabolism in response to external stimuli, such as light exposure, sleep schedules, and eating patterns. However, misalignment between internal biological rhythms and social demands can compromise food choices, potentially leading to overweight and obesity. This research aimed to assess how a person’s chronotype links to social jet lag (SJL), which in turn would relate to their nutritional status and food consumption patterns as a university student. 617 students from a State University located in the State of Paraná, Brazil, completed a cross-sectional research study that collected sociodemographic information/anthropometrics by means of an online survey. It included self-reported height/weight data and dietary habits. The Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) was utilized to determine each participant’s chronotype classification and SJL calculation. Researchers found that nearly half of the students (49.3%) displayed an Intermediate Chronotype, which is associated with a diet that contained elements of the “Mixed” Diet, meaning there are equal portions of healthy food (Fresh Fruits, Beans, etc.) and unhealthy foods (Sweetened Beverages). The multivariate logistic regression analyses identified age as a significant predictor of obesity risk (OR: 1.15, p < 0.001), while dietary habits such as fruit consumption played a protective role. Additionally, having a breakfast protected them from being classified as obese compared to those who did not eat breakfast (OR = 0.59). Contrary to expectations, late-night supper was not a statistically significant predictor in the adjusted model. Predictors of an Intermediate chronotype included being male and eating morning snacks regularly. The results of this study suggest that students with an intermediate chronotype will predictably have skewed eating patterns, such as skipping breakfast and eating late—both of which affect obesity risks. Nutritional strategies for university students should focus on promoting circadian regularity and optimizing meal timing. Full article

Background: Maternal health behaviors during pregnancy are crucial for maternal and fetal outcomes. While global research has explored that demographic, clinical, and psychosocial determinants significantly influence these behaviors, evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Albania, remains limited. This study aims to evaluate psychosocial perceptions and health behaviors related to lifestyle among pregnant women in a local Albanian community in order to identify which are higher risk subgroups that need targeted and tailored antenatal care interventions. Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional study included 200 pregnant women attending antenatal clinics from May to August 2024 in Vlora city, Albania. Participants were selected using consecutive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire composed of five sections: demographic/obstetric data; maternal health behaviors; dietary diversity; physical activity, perceived stress; and social support. Clinical and anthropometric measurements were assessed by trained health professionals during antenatal visits. SPSS version 23.0 and binary logistic regression with p-value ≤ 0.05 statistically significant were used for data analysis. Results: Mean age was 28.3 ± 6.4 years, 71% employed and 83.5% urban residents. Key unhealthy behaviors included tobacco use (25.5%), alcohol consumption (10.5%), exposure to toxins (15%), and low dietary diversity (32%). We found significant correlations between low dietary diversity and rural residence (Adj OR = 2.48), hypertension (Adj OR = 6.88), and overweight/obesity (Adj OR = 2.33). Tobacco use was associated with unemployment and alcohol use with unemployment and hypertension variables. Low/moderate social support and high perceived stress were significantly related with multiple unhealthy behaviors, such as low dietary diversity, inadequate physical activity and antenatal care. Conclusions: Unhealthy nutritional behaviors, tobacco and alcohol use and low physical activity are more prevalent risk factors among pregnant women in Vlora city. Priority should be given to vulnerable groups, including rural residents, pregnant women with low social support, high perceived stress and those with hypertension and obesity. Interventions that integrate psychosocial support and health education into antenatal care services are urgently needed to enhance pregnancy outcomes in Albanian communities. Full article

Background: Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important grain legume crop of nutritional and economic value across Africa. Genetic improvements of the crop to enhance productivity and resilience depend on understanding the diversity within the African germplasm. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, the genetic diversity and population structure of common bean in Africa were reviewed systematically based on existing research. A protocol for conducting the systematic review was developed registered in OSF. Twenty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria after a comprehensive search in ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, PubMed, AGRICOLA, Taylor & Francis, and SpringerLink. Data on molecular markers and diversity metrics, thus PIC, He, and AMOVA, were extracted and synthesized qualitatively. Results: Despite substantial heterogeneity in panel sizes, reporting completeness, and marker systems (SSR, SNP, POX, ISSR), consistent patterns emerged. Studies revealed moderate to high levels of genetic diversity. Population-structure analyses recovered the canonical Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools with extensive admixture and high gene flow. AMOVA results indicated that a substantial proportion of total genetic variation was attributed to within-population components. Conclusions: The results are consistent with previous studies, but the sample size and types of markers make direct comparisons impossible. More future studies should use standardized genotyping approaches to increase data consistency. These insights are useful for yield improvement under both non-stress and stress conditions and for developing Africa’s diverse environments. Full article

Coelomactra antiquata, a marine bivalve of high nutritional and economic value, lacks comprehensive data on its toxic responses and adaptive mechanisms to ammonia nitrogen. This study integrated histophysiology, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to investigate its ammonia tolerance and molecular mechanisms, determining a 48 h LC50 of 99.06 mg/L and a sublethal concentration of 9.91 mg/L. After 48 h of sublethal ammonia stress, SOD, CAT, GLDH, and GS activities in gill and hepatopancreas significantly increased, with notable changes in MDA, Gln, and urea contents, confirming disruption of antioxidant defense and nitrogen metabolism homeostasis. Tissue sections revealed irreversible histopathological damage to key tissues. Omics analyses identified 7823 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 737 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) in hepatopancreas. DEGs were enriched in metabolic pathways and multiple immune-related signaling pathways (e.g., NF-kappa B, RIG-I-like receptor), while DEMs were primarily involved in processes such as protein digestion/absorption, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Research data indicate that ammonia nitrogen stress primarily regulates the antioxidant function and nitrogen metabolism homeostasis of C. antiquata by activating multiple immune- and metabolism-related pathways. This first systematic multi-omics study elucidates C. antiquata’s tolerance to ammonia nitrogen and its molecular responses, filling a gap in environmental toxicology research for sustainable aquaculture and genomic studies. Beverages, particularly sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), pose a significant public health concern globally. Changing eating habits among Pakistani young adults have led to higher sugary drink consumption, underscoring the need for a suitable cultural assessment tool. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 381 university students aged 18–26 years from three major cities of Pakistan. Following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, the original Beverage Intake Questionnaire (BEVQ-15) was modified by removing four items (including alcoholic beverages), adding two culturally relevant types (flavored milk and refreshing drinks), and converting measurement units to milliliters, resulting in a 13-item Beverage Intake Questionnaire-Pakistan (BEVQ-PK). Validity was assessed by comparing BEVQ-PK1 (test) with three 24 h dietary recalls. Test–retest reliability was evaluated after a 14-day interval by comparing BEVQ-PK1 (test) and BEVQ-PK2 (retest). Analyses included descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC), Bland–Altman plots, and Spearman’s correlations. The BEVQ-PK (13-item) demonstrated moderate to strong validity (r = 0.2–0.8, p < 0.001) and strong reliability (r = 0.5–0.9, p < 0.001). Most beverage categories showed no significant intake differences between test and retest. Tea/coffee with milk was the most frequently consumed beverage, followed by soft drinks and green/black tea. Overall, BEVQ-PK is a valid and reliable tool for assessing SSB intake among Pakistani university students and can support future nutrition and public health research. Full article

Background/Objectives: The first 1000 days of life represent a critical window for growth and neurodevelopment, during which nutrition strongly influences brain development and metabolic programming. In phenylketonuria (PKU), dietary management is essential to prevent neurological impairment and later-life risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This review examines current evidence on PKU from pregnancy through complementary feeding, highlighting the impact of nutritional strategies on neurodevelopmental and metabolic outcomes. Methods: This narrative review, following PRISMA guidelines, used a systematic search of PubMed and Scopus with defined PICO questions. Original research, reviews, and guidelines on PKU nutrition during the first 1000 days were included, emphasizing neurological and metabolic outcomes. Results: Articles addressed prenatal and postnatal factors in PKU. Optimised metabolic control in women with PKU is critical to prevent maternal PKU syndrome, reducing risks of miscarriage, congenital heart defects, microcephaly, and neurocognitive impairment. Pre-conception dietary management, frequent blood Phe monitoring, supplementation with Phe-free protein substitutes (PSs), micronutrients, and emerging pharmacological therapies support maternal and foetal health. Following newborn screening, early dietary treatment in infants with PKU maintains plasma Phe within safe ranges, promoting growth and neurodevelopment. Breastfeeding, combined with Phe-free infant PSs, is feasible, and complementary feeding should be introduced carefully. Frequent monitoring and tailored dietary adjustments, including second-stage PSs, support metabolic control, while data on gut microbiota remain limited. Conclusions: Early multidisciplinary interventions are crucial to optimise metabolic and neurodevelopmental outcomes during this window of opportunity. Further research is needed to address remaining gaps and optimise PKU management across the first 1000 days. Full article

Aquatic environments have been a critical source of nutrition for millennia, with wild fisheries supplying protein and nutrients to populations worldwide. A notable shift has occurred in recent decades with the expansion of aquaculture, now representing a fast-growing sector in food production. Aquaculture plays a key role in mitigating the depletion of wild fish stocks and addressing issues related to overfishing. Despite its potential benefits, the sustainability of both wild and farmed aquatic food systems is challenged by anthropogenic pollution. Contaminants from agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, and domestic effluents enter freshwater systems and eventually reach marine environments, where they may be transported globally through ocean currents. Maintaining water quality is paramount to food safety, environmental integrity, and long-term food security. In addition to conventional seafood products such as fish and shellfish, foods such as those derived from microalgae are gaining attention in Western markets for their high nutritional value and potential functional properties. These organisms have been consumed in Asia for generations and are now being explored as sustainable foods and ingredients as an alternative source of protein. Contaminants in aquatic food products include residues of agrochemicals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as well as brominated flame retardants and heavy metals. Public and scientific attention has intensified around plastic pollution, particularly microplastics and nanoplastics, which are increasingly detected in aquatic organisms and are the subject of ongoing toxicological and ecological risk assessments. While the presence of these hazards necessitates robust risk assessment and regulatory oversight, it is important to balance these concerns against the health benefits of aquatic foods, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality proteins, vitamins, and trace elements. Furthermore, beyond direct human health implications, the environmental impact of pollutant sources must be addressed through integrated management approaches to ensure the long-term sustainability of aquatic ecosystems and the food systems they support. This review covers regulatory frameworks, risk assessments, and management issues relating to aquatic environments, including the impact of climate change. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for researchers, policymakers, food businesses who harvest food from aquatic systems and other stakeholders. Full article

Ruminant livestock production faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining productivity and food security. This comprehensive review examines current strategies and emerging technologies for enhancing environmental sustainability in ruminant systems. The review synthesizes recent advances across four interconnected domains: genetic and genomic approaches for breeding environmentally efficient animals, rumen microbiome manipulation, nutritional strategies for emission reduction, and precision management practices. Specifically, genetic and genomic strategies demonstrate significant potential for long-term sustainability improvements through selective breeding for feed efficiency, methane reduction, and enhanced longevity. Understanding host–microbe interactions and developing targeted interventions have also shown promising effects on optimizing fermentation efficiency and reducing methane production. Key nutritional interventions include dietary optimization strategies that improve feed efficiency, feed additives, and precision feeding systems that minimize nutrient waste. Furthermore, management approaches encompass precision livestock farming technologies including sensor-based monitoring systems, automated feeding platforms, and real-time emission measurement tools that enable data-driven decision making. Integration of these approaches through system-based frameworks offers the greatest potential for achieving substantial environmental improvements while maintaining economic viability. In addition, this review identifies key research gaps including the need for standardized measurement protocols, long-term sustainability assessments, and economic evaluation frameworks. Future directions emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, policy support, and technology transfer to accelerate adoption of sustainable practices across diverse production systems. Functional properties of coastal halophytes are important for development of salt-tolerant cash crop cultures. The study of salt tolerance in coastal dune-building grass Leymus arenarius holds significant importance for its application in land reclamation, soil stabilization, and enhancing crop resilience to salinity stress. We used two accessions (LA1 and LA2) of L. arenarius to compare effects of salinity caused by NaCl and NaNO3 on growth, ion accumulation and mineral nutrition in controlled conditions. L. arenarius plants exhibited high tolerance to sodium salts, with distinct effects on growth and development observed between chloride and nitrate treatments. While both salts negatively impacted root biomass, nitrate treatment (50–100 mmol L−1) increased leaf number and biomass in LA2 plants, whereas chloride treatment decreased tiller and leaf sheath biomass. Despite individual variations, salinity treatments showed comparable effects on traits like tiller and leaf count, as well as leaf blade and sheath biomass. Salinity increased water content in leaf blades, sheaths, and roots, with LA2 plants showing the most pronounced effects. Chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements indicated a positive impact of NaNO3 treatment on photosynthesis at intermediate salt concentrations, but a decrease at high salinity, particularly in LA2 plants. The accumulation capacity for Na+ in nitrate-treated plants reached 30 and 20 g kg−1 in leaves and roots, respectively. In contrast, the accumulation capacity in chloride-treated plants was significantly lower, approximately 10 g kg−1, in both leaves and roots. Both treatments increased nitrogen, phosphorus, and manganese concentrations in leaves and roots, with varying effects on calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper concentrations depending on the type of salt and tissue. These findings highlight the potential of L. arenarius for restoring saline and nitrogen-contaminated environments and position it as a valuable model for advancing research on salt tolerance mechanisms to improve cereal crop resilience. Biostimulants are increasingly recognized in modern agriculture as eco-friendly inputs that enhance plant growth, improve stress tolerance, and promote product quality. This study investigated the effects of fulvic acid, amino acids, and chitosan on the growth, yield, and nutritional quality of parsley grown under hydroponic greenhouse conditions. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, different doses of fulvic acid (80–120 ppm), amino acids (40–80 ppm), and chitosan (0.3–0.6 mL L−1) were evaluated. In the second stage, the most effective treatments were tested in combination. The results showed that all biostimulants positively influenced plant growth, productivity, and nutritional parameters. In the first experiment, the highest total yield was obtained with chitosan at 0.3 mL L−1 (2068 g m−2; +30.1%). The greatest increase in total phenolic content was observed with AA 40 (391.1 mg GA 100 g−1 FW; +64%), while the strongest nitrate reduction occurred with FA 120, reducing nitrate levels from 1048 to 405 mg kg−1 (−61%). In the second experiment, the FA 80 + C 0.3 combination was the most effective treatment, increasing total yield from 493 to 856 g m−2 (+73.7%) and reducing nitrate content from 937 to 460 mg kg−1 (−50.9%). These findings suggest that fulvic acid and chitosan, applied individually and particularly in combination, may serve as effective biostimulant strategies for improving yield and nutritional quality while reducing nitrate accumulation in hydroponically grown parsley. Lupin (Lupinus spp.), a legume known for its high protein content, holds great promise as a sustainable protein source to meet future global demands. Despite its nutritional benefits, including substantial dietary fibre and bioactive compounds, lupin remains underutilised in human diets due to several techno-functional and sensory limitations. This review delves into the techno-functional limitations of lupin, which include poor foaming capacity, low water and oil absorption, inadequate emulsification properties, and poor solubility. Lupin’s techno-functional limits are tied to the compact, heat-stable nature of its conglutin storage proteins and high insoluble fibre content. While research has been conducted on fermenting other legumes such as soybeans, chickpeas, peas, and lentils with Exopolysaccharide (EPS) producing bacteria, its application to lupin remains largely unexplored. Crucially, this work is one of the first reviews to exclusively link lupin’s unique protein and fibre structure with the specific polymer chemistry of bacterial EPS as a targeted modification strategy. Current research findings suggest that EPS-producing Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) fermentation can significantly improve the techno-functional properties of legumes, indicating strong potential for similar benefits with lupin. The analysis highlights various studies demonstrating the ability of EPS-producing LAB to improve water retention, emulsification, and overall palatability of legume-based products. Furthermore, it emphasises the need for continued research in the realm of fermentation with EPS-producing bacteria to enhance the utilisation of lupin in food applications. By addressing these challenges, fermented lupin could become a more appealing and nutritious option, contributing significantly to global food security and nutrition. Full article

Household bread and bakery product waste constitutes a growing issue in Algeria, with significant economic, environmental, and socio-cultural implications. This research is situated within the framework of sustainable food systems and responds to recent transformations in domestic food practices, driven by increased female labor force participation, time constraints, and the widespread availability of industrial bread, which have reshaped household food management and traditional home bread-making practices. The study aims to (1) review traditional Algerian breads, emphasizing their culinary, nutritional, and cultural significance; (2) examine household behaviors during the month of Ramadan in the city of Constantine, focusing on patterns of consumption, purchasing, waste generation, and strategies for reusing leftovers; and (3) assess the economic implications of these practices using the FUSIONS methodology and explore their contribution to household-level food sustainability. Methodologically, a cross-sectional exploratory survey was conducted among 100 married women, the majority of whom were middle-aged (62%; range: 27–71 years; mean age: 52.0 ± 10.21), well-educated (59% with a university degree), economically active (68%), and living in medium-sized households (63%). The findings reveal pronounced contrasts across bread categories. Industrial breads, particularly baguettes, are characterized by high daily purchase frequencies (4.16 ± 1.31 units/day) and the highest waste rates (12.67%), largely attributable to over-purchasing (92%) and low perceived value associated with subsidized prices, with convenience (100%) remaining the primary factor explaining their dominance. In contrast, traditional breads exhibit minimal waste levels (1.63%) despite frequent purchase (3.85 ± 0.70 loaves/day), reflecting more conscious food management shaped by strong cultural attachment, higher perceived value, and dietary preferences (100%). Modern bakery products, along with confections and pastries, the latter representing of 58% of total household food purchases, comprise a substantial share of food expenditure during Ramadan (2.16 ± 0.46 loaves/day and 12.07 and 7.28 ± 2.50 units/day, respectively), while generating relatively low levels of food waste (5.69%, 4.19%, and 0%, respectively). This suggests that higher prices and symbolic value encourage more careful purchasing behaviors and conscious consumption. Freezing leftovers (63%) emerges as the most commonly adopted waste-reduction strategy. Overall, this work provides original quantitative evidence at the household level on bread and bakery product waste in Algeria. It highlights the key socio-economic, cultural, and behavioral drivers underlying waste generation and proposes actionable recommendations to promote more sustainable food practices, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production. Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a frequent pregnancy pathology with poor maternal and fetal outcomes and risk of type 2 diabetes in later life. Despite known risk factors, such as obesity, age, and familial history, new data suggest that environmental exposure to agents, such as pesticides, can play a role in the etiogenesis of GDM. Objective: The epidemiologic, experimental, and mechanistic evidence between pesticide exposure and GDM risk is summarized here, and we concentrate on recent research (2000–2025). Methods: We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published from January 2000 to December 2025 using combinations of the terms “fertilizers”, “herbicides”, and “pesticides” with “diabetes mellitus” and “gestational diabetes”. After deduplication, 12 unique studies met inclusion criteria for qualitative synthesis (GDM endpoint or pregnancy glycemia with pesticide exposure). Results: Occupational and agricultural exposure to pesticides during first pregnancy was determined to be associated with a significantly increased risk of GDM through various epidemiologic studies. New studies have implicated new classes of pesticides, including pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, with higher GDM risk with first-trimester exposure. Experimental studies suggest that pesticides provide potential endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can induce insulin resistance through disruption of hormonal signaling, oxidative stress, inflammation, β-cell toxicity, and epigenetic modifications. However, significant limitations exist. Most of the evidence is observational, measurement of exposure is often indirect, and confounding factors are difficult to exclude. Notably, low dietary and residential exposure is not well studied, and dose–response relationships are undefined. Conclusions: New data indicate that pesticide exposure during early pregnancy and occupational exposure may increase the risk of GDM. Prospective cohort studies using biomonitoring, chemical mixture exposure, and geographic variation in pesticide exposure should be the focus of future research. Due to potential public health implications, preventive strategies to ensure the quality of nutrition and to reduce maternal exposure to pesticides during pregnancy are rational. Full article

The gut microbiota represents a complex microbial ecosystem with the potential to influence athletic performance, energy metabolism, inflammatory responses, and recovery capacity in athletes. However, the specific relationship between microbiota and performance in combat sport athletes remains poorly characterized. This scoping review systematically maps current evidence on gut microbiota-combat sports performance relationships, identifies microbial response patterns to training and competition, evaluates nutritional prebiotic and probiotic interventions, and highlights methodological gaps to guide future research. Following the PRISMA-ScR framework, 8 studies were identified, which included 247 elite and high-level athletes, comprising 169 males and 78 females, with sample sizes ranging from 12 to 53 across wrestling, mixed martial arts, martial arts, judo, and taekwondo. Associations were observed between gut microbiota characteristics and training intensity, competition level, weight management, and pre-competition psychological states. Limited taxonomic consistency was observed across studies, with most bacterial genera appearing in a single investigation, precluding the identification of robust sport-specific microbial signatures. Preliminary trials demonstrated improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms, aerobic performance, and psychological fatigue with prebiotic and probiotic interventions. However, small sample sizes and methodological heterogeneity across studies limit generalizability and preclude definitive conclusions regarding the role of gut microbiome in combat sports performance.
