This study evaluated the nutritional adequacy of commercial dog and cat foods in South Korea by comparing analytically determined nutrient contents with recommended nutrient levels of the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). A total of 96 pet food products for puppies (n = 50), adult dogs (n = 18), kittens (n = 17), and adult cats (n = 11) were collected. Nutrients, including crude protein, crude fat, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, major minerals, and selected trace nutrients, were analyzed using accredited methods stipulated by the Korean Feed Control Act and compared with NIAS and AAFCO recommendations. Most adult dog and cat diets met recommended nutrient levels; however, deficiencies were identified in diets intended for growth. Puppy foods showed inadequate levels of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA + DHA, 72%), calcium (22%), and phosphorus (42%), as well as imbalanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratios (12%). In kitten diets, insufficient EPA + DHA (41.2%) and taurine (11.8%) were observed. In contrast, 82.3% of products met label-declared guaranteed analysis values for seven mandatory nutrients. These results provide baseline information on the nutritional adequacy and labeling compliance of pet foods across different life stages. Full article

Background: Nutritional psychoeducation is a core component of multidisciplinary treatment for anorexia nervosa, yet evidence on its association with changes in eating behavior beyond weight outcomes remains limited. Methods: This pre–post observational study included 45 patients with anorexia nervosa attending a Day Hospital program who participated in a structured, group-based nutritional psychoeducational intervention as part of standard multidisciplinary care. Nutritional knowledge, dietary rules, eating behaviors, food group exposure assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and body mass index (BMI) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Pre–post changes were examined using paired statistical tests with Holm correction. Associations between changes in cognitive–nutritional variables and eating behavior were explored using correlations and multiple linear regression models. Results: Significant pre–post improvements were observed in nutritional knowledge and reductions in rigid dietary rules. Eating behavior showed specific changes, with increased exposure to carbohydrate- and fat-containing foods, as well as improved meal adequacy. BMI increased during the observation period, consistent with expected outcomes of Day Hospital treatment. Changes in nutrient-related knowledge were positively associated with changes in dietary fat exposure, independent of baseline BMI and changes in dietary rules, whereas no comparable association was observed for carbohydrate exposure. Conclusions: In this Day Hospital sample, participation in a group-based nutritional psychoeducational program within a multidisciplinary treatment context was associated with specific changes in eating behavior alongside cognitive–nutritional changes and weight gain. The observed association between nutrient-related knowledge and dietary fat exposure may suggest the relevance of assessing food-specific behaviors and cognitive–nutritional processes as complementary outcomes during treatment for anorexia nervosa. Evidence on modifiable post-diagnosis factors influencing outcomes after intravesical Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) therapy for high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is limited. In this exploratory, feasibility-focused prospective multicenter cohort (March 2023–November 2024), BCG-naïve patients completed repeated interviewer-administered 24 h dietary recalls; prespecified food groups, selected foods, and nutrients were screened for associations with 1-year intravesical recurrence using Firth’s penalized logistic regression adjusted a priori for age, sex, and total energy intake, with false discovery rate control within each exposure family. Forty-six patients were enrolled; 41 had evaluable recurrence status, including 8 recurrences (19.5%). Participants were predominantly overweight (mean body mass index (BMI) 28.4 kg/m2) and had low adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern (median Mediterranean Adequacy Index 2.25). No dietary exposure met the within-family false discovery rate threshold; the smallest q-value was 0.361. Nominal inverse associations were observed for leafy green vegetables (OR per 1 SD 0.385; 95% CI 0.101–0.972) and for energy-adjusted zinc (OR 0.280; 95% CI 0.069–0.802) and magnesium intakes (OR 0.260; 95% CI 0.045–0.872), but these did not remain significant after FDR adjustment. These exploratory signals warrant replication in larger, biomarker-informed cohorts incorporating dietary biomarkers and immune profiling during BCG. Given the limited sample size and low number of recurrence events, these findings are strictly hypothesis-generating and should not be interpreted as evidence of definitive protective or risk dietary factors. Background/Objectives: Contemporary food systems face dual imperatives of ensuring nutritional adequacy while minimizing environmental resource consumption, yet conventional dietary assessment methodologies inadequately integrate these competing objectives. This simulation-based proof-of-concept study developed an artificial intelligence-driven computational framework synthesizing nutritional evaluation, environmental footprint quantification, and economic accessibility assessment. Methods: The analytical architecture integrated random forest classification, dimensionality reduction, and scenario-based optimization across a simulated population cohort of 1500 individuals. Food composition data encompassed 55 representative foods across eight categories linked with greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and price parameters. Four dietary patterns (Mediterranean, Western, Plant-based, Mixed) were characterized across nutrient adequacy, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and economic cost. Results: Random forest classification achieved 39.1% accuracy, with cost, greenhouse gas emissions, and water consumption emerging as the most discriminating features. Dietary patterns exhibited convergent macronutrient profiles (protein 108.8–112.8 g per day, 4% variation) despite categorical distinctions, while calcium inadequacy pervaded all patterns (867–927.5 mg per day, 7–13% below requirements). Environmental footprints demonstrated limited differentiation (greenhouse gas 3.73–3.96 kg CO2e per day, 6% range). Bootstrap resampling (n = 1000) confirmed narrow confidence intervals, with NHANES validation revealing substantial energy intake deviations (38–58% above observed means) attributable to adequacy-prioritized design rather than observed consumption patterns. Scenario modeling identified seasonally flexible dietary configurations maintaining micronutrient and protein adequacy while reducing water use to 87% of baseline at modest cost increases. Conclusions: This framework establishes a validated computational infrastructure for integrated dietary assessment benchmarked against sustainability thresholds and epidemiological reference data, demonstrating the feasibility of AI-driven evaluation of dietary patterns across nutritional, environmental, and economic dimensions. Background: The Carnivore Diet (CD) is an almost exclusively animal-based dietary pattern that has gained increasing popularity on social media. Despite numerous health-related claims, a standardized definition is lacking, and scientific evidence regarding the long-term effects of this diet remains unclear. Methods: The literature search for this scoping review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PRISMA-ScR) using the databases PubMed, LIVIVO, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Results: Nine human studies were included. Individual publications reported positive effects of the CD, such as weight reduction, increased satiety, and potential improvements in inflammatory or metabolic markers. At the same time, potential risks of nutrient deficiencies, particularly in vitamins C and D, calcium, magnesium, iodine, and dietary fiber, as well as elevated low-density-lipoprotein (LDL-) and total cholesterol (TC) levels, were identified, along with one case describing a deterioration in health status. Overall, the quality of evidence is very limited due to small sample sizes, short study durations, and the absence of control groups. Conclusions: The CD may offer short-term health benefits but carries substantial risks of nutrient deficiencies, reduced intake of health-promoting phytochemicals, and the development of cardiovascular disease. At this time, long-term adherence to a CD cannot be recommended. Full article

Background/Objectives: Adherence to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet (PHD) may promote human health and environmental sustainability, yet evidence regarding adherence and nutritional adequacy in Australia is limited. Globally, no research to date has used the recently updated 2025 PHD guidelines. We benchmarked the compatibility of Australian adults’ dietary patterns with the 2025 PHD and examined its associations with nutritional adequacy and sociodemographic factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis of dietary data from 5655 adults who participated in the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey. Usual intakes were estimated from two 24 h recalls using the Multiple Source Method. PHD adherence was measured using the Healthy Reference Diet Score (0–130 points). Nutrient adequacy was assessed using the full probability method for iron and the Australian/New Zealand Estimated Average Requirement Cut-Point Method for all other nutrients. Survey-weighted regression models examined associations with nutritional adequacy and sociodemographic factors. Results: The mean PHD adherence score was 50 (SE 0.3) points. Higher adherence was associated with lower odds of inadequate intakes of several micronutrients, but with higher odds of inadequacy for vitamin B12 (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.45) and calcium (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.17). PHD adherence was higher among females, older adults, those with higher educational attainment, those born in countries where English is not the main language, two-person households and non-smokers; adherence was non-linearly associated with alcohol and was lower among those with a Body Mass Index ≥ 30 kg/m2. Conclusions: PHD adherence in Australia was low. Higher adherence was associated with improved adequacy for several micronutrients. Trade-offs for vitamin B12 and calcium warrant consideration. Equity-conscious strategies will be needed to support the adoption of nutritionally adequate, environmentally sustainable diets. Full article

Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have emerged as a critical component of diet quality, yet data on the associations between UPF and nutrient intakes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate nutrient consumption in relation to UPF intake and adherence to international dietary guidelines for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. Methods: Data from 469 individuals aged 2–18 years enrolled in the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS) were analyzed. Intakes were assessed using two 24 h recalls, and foods were classified according to the NOVA system. Participants were categorized by UPF energy intake tertiles. Nutrient adequacy was assessed using Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, European Society of Cardiology guidelines for macronutrients, and the Institute of Medicine’s Estimated Average Requirements and Adequate Intake values for micronutrients. Results: Children in the highest UPF tertile had significantly higher intakes of energy, carbohydrates, added sugars, saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and cholesterol, but lower intakes of protein compared to those in the lowest tertile. Fiber intake remained inadequate across all tertiles, with no significant differences. Regarding adherence to NCD prevention guidelines, children in the 3rd UPF tertile had a 2.3 times higher prevalence ratio for exceeding added sugar recommendations, while their protein intake prevalence ratio was 0.8 times lower. For micronutrients, the highest UPF tertile showed significantly elevated intakes of vitamins E, B1, folate, calcium, iron, copper, and sodium, but lower potassium intake compared to the lowest tertile. Conclusions: Our results underscore the need for effective public health strategies to improve diet quality in children and adolescents and prevent diet-related NCDs. Full article

Aging involves progressive changes in sensory perception, appetite regulation, and metabolic flexibility, which together affect dietary intake, nutrient adequacy, and health-related outcomes. Meanwhile, current wearable technologies allow continuous, minimally invasive monitoring of physiological and behavioral markers relevant to metabolic health, such as physical activity, sleep, heart rate variability, glycemic patterns, and so forth. However, digital nutrition approaches have largely focused on physiological signals while underutilizing the sensory dimensions of eating—taste, smell, texture, and hedonic response—that strongly drive dietary intake and adherence. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on the following: (1) age-related sensory changes and their nutritional consequences, (2) metabolic adaptation and markers of resilience in older adults, and (3) current and emerging wearable technologies applicable to nutritional personalization. Following this, we propose an integrative framework linking subjective (implicit) sensory perception and objective (explicit) wearable-derived physiological responses into adaptive feedback loops to support personalized dietary strategies for healthy aging. In this light, we discuss practical applications, technological and methodological challenges, ethical considerations, and research priorities to validate and implement sensory–physiological integrated models. Merging together sensory science and wearable monitoring has the potential to enhance adherence, preserve nutritional status, and bolster metabolic resilience in aging populations, moving nutrition from one-size-fits-all prescriptions toward dynamic, person-centered, sensory-aware interventions. Background/Objectives: The Fourth Italian National Food Consumption Survey (IV SCAI 2017–2020) provides updated and comprehensive data on the dietary habits of the Italian population. The study aimed to assess nutrient intakes and their main food sources among individuals aged 3 months to 74 years and to evaluate the adequacy of intakes against the Italian dietary reference values (DRVs). Methods: A nationally representative sample of 1969 participants were surveyed using two non-consecutive food diaries (ages 3 months–9 years) and 24 h recalls (ages 10–74 years) in accordance with the European Food Safety Authority’s EU Menu guideline. The multiple source method was used to estimate the usual intakes accounted for intra-individual variability. Nutrient adequacy was assessed against age- and sex-specific DRVs, and the main food sources of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results: Energy intake was below DRVs for adults, particularly women, while protein intake exceeded recommendations across all ages, mainly from animal sources (67% of total). Total fat (38%En) and saturated fat (12%En) exceeded the recommendations, whereas carbohydrates (45%En) and dietary fibre were suboptimal. Vitamin D and calcium intake were markedly below DRVs for all age groups; iron inadequacy was prevalent among females. The main energy sources were cereals (39%), milk and dairy (15%), oils and fats (13%), and meat (10%). Vegetables and fruits were leading contributors to vitamins A and C, while meat, fish, and dairy provided vitamin B12 and D. Conclusions: The Italian diet remains cereal-based but shows nutritional imbalances: notably, excessive protein and fat intake and widespread deficiencies in vitamin D, calcium, iron, and fibre. These findings underline the need for targeted nutrition policies to realign dietary patterns with the national recommendations. Full article

Background: Healthier between-meal snacks can improve diet quality in the US and globally. Objectives: To assess the impact on diet quality of replacing solid snacks with almonds or adding almonds (30 g) to the diet. Methods: Dietary data for 4333 children (4–19 y) and 10,925 adults (>19 y) came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2017–23). Nutrient composition data came from the Food and Nutrient Databases for Dietary Studies (FNDDS). Substitution Model 1 replaced all solid snacks with almonds on a per-calorie basis. Model 2 exempted “healthy” snacks. Model 3 added almonds to the observed diet. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2020), Nutrient Rich Food Index (NRF), Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR), and Mean Excess Ratio (MER) were measures of diet quality. Results: Solid snacks provided 329 kcal/day (15.6% of dietary energy), of which 58 kcal came from healthy snacks (2.9%). The 4–13 y age group consumed the most energy from snacks. Diets with almonds replacing solid snacks were lower in added sugar, sodium, and saturated (solid) fat but higher in protein, fiber, mono- and polyunsaturated fats, and magnesium. MAR dietary nutrient density scores were significantly higher, and MER scores were lower. Total HEI-2020 scores rose from 52.4 (observed) to 59.6 (Model 1) and to 60.6 in Model 2_100. The addition of almonds (30 g or 50 g) increased HEI-2020 values to 59.2 and to 61.4, respectively. Several HEI-2020 sub-scores increased as well. The greatest dietary benefits were obtained for children and young adults. Conclusions: Replacing solid snacks with small amounts of almonds led to higher quality modeled food patterns, especially for younger age groups. The DGA 2025–30 should address the inclusion of healthy energy-dense snacks into everyday diets. Full article

Background: Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadets undergo biannual Field Training Exercises (FTX) that impose substantial physiological demands, necessitating adequate nutritional intake to support performance and recovery. Methods: Energy Expenditure (EE) measured by actigraphy and self-reported nutritional intake (NI) of ROTC Cadets during a Fall FTX were obtained and compared to Military Dietary Reference Intake (MDRI) guidelines. Energy balance and nutrient adequacy were assessed using paired sample t-tests. Results: Cadets demonstrated significant caloric deficits, consuming fewer kilocalories than both their active metabolic rate (t = −12.07, df = 42, p < 0.001) and Low Energy Availability thresholds (t = 6.47, df = 57.54, p < 0.001). Macronutrient analysis revealed widespread deficiencies. Neither male nor female cadets met minimum carbohydrate gram recommendations. Protein intake in grams was significantly below MDRI guidelines for 94% of males (t = −10.03, p < 0.001) and 90% of females (t = −4.62, p = 0.001). Fat intake was generally adequate for all cadets, with 94% of males (t = 6.50, p < 0.001) and 90% of females (t = 4.19, p = 0.002) meeting or exceeding recommended fat intake. Conclusions: These findings underscore the prevalence of under-fueling during FTX and highlight the need for improved nutritional strategies to mitigate energy deficits and support cadet performance and health. Background: In pediatric celiac disease (CD), intestinal malabsorption and the restrictive nature of a gluten-free diet (GFD) frequently result in persistent macro- and micronutrient imbalances, despite histological remission. The present review evaluates the evidence on nutritional adequacy of the GFD, identifies common deficiencies, and considers biomarker strategies and dietary recommendations to optimize growth and metabolic health. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted, focusing on studies of nutrient intake, product composition of gluten-free foods, biomarker assessment, and clinical outcomes in children with CD. Both macronutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber) and micronutrient (iron, vitamin D, calcium, B-vitamins, zinc, magnesium) domains were included. Results: Children with CD on long-term GFD demonstrate higher intake of lipids (especially saturated fat) and simple carbohydrates, alongside consistently low intake of dietary fiber and key micronutrients. Gluten-free products often exhibit lower protein content, higher glycemic index, and reduced fortification compared to gluten-containing equivalents. Nutritional deficits contribute to impaired linear growth, delayed puberty and increased metabolic risk. Conclusions: Nutritional adequacy of the GFD cannot be assumed in children with CD. Routine monitoring using standardized biomarker panels, combined with personalized dietary counseling and improved formulation and fortification of gluten-free products, is essential to mitigate long-term adverse outcomes. Future work should advance precision nutrition approaches and public-health initiatives to optimize dietary quality in this vulnerable population. Full article

Background: The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is an emerging anthropometric measure that reflects central adiposity, particularly relevant in ageing populations where body composition and nutritional status undergo significant changes. This study aims to explore patterns linking BRI values, age, energy intake, and micronutrient adequacy using cluster analysis, with a focus on implications for older adults. Methods: Data from 1504 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 74.4 ± 10.8 years) in Poland participating in the PolSenior project were analyzed. K-means cluster analysis was applied to standardized variables (BRI, age, energy intake, and micronutrient adequacy) to identify major participant profiles. Results: The data indicate that older adults, particularly those over 75 years old, are at an elevated risk of inadequate micronutrient intake, especially for essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, folate and vitamin D. Three distinct clusters were identified: Cluster 1 (n = 495, 33%): oldest participants, lowest BRI, and insufficient energy and micronutrient intake, indicating a high risk of undernutrition; Cluster 2 (n = 557, 37%): average age, moderate BRI, and highest energy and micronutrient intake, suggesting a potentially excessive energy balance. Cluster 3 (n = 452, 30%): the youngest group with the highest BRI and the lowest energy and micronutrient intake, indicating early-onset central adiposity and poor dietary quality. Conclusions: Three clusters were identified that differed significantly in BRI, age, and adequacy of energy and micronutrient intake. BRI combined with dietary indicators effectively distinguishes nutritional risk profiles among older adults. A low BRI may indicate a risk of undernutrition in advanced age, whereas a higher BRI with low nutrient adequacy suggests poor diet quality, even within the older population. Age-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions are needed to support healthy ageing. Full article

Although choline was established as an essential nutrient over three decades ago, critical questions remain about how choline regulates brain, liver, and cardiometabolic health across the lifespan. This Perspective summarizes emerging insights presented at the Future Directions in Choline Symposium: A Tribute to Steven H. Zeisel, which outlined three converging areas of research: (i) choline-dependent mechanisms in neurodevelopment and cognition, (ii) the link between choline metabolism and obesity, and (iii) the role of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in cardiovascular disease. Evidence from clinical and preclinical studies confirms that maternal choline intake is critical for neurogenesis, cognition, and visual system development, and that higher choline availability buffers the fetal brain against environmental and psychosocial stressors. Choline supplementation improves cognitive outcomes in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and mitigates neurodegenerative pathology in Alzheimer’s models. In cardiometabolic health, recent data challenge the interpretation of TMAO as a causal toxin, positioning it instead as a marker of renal function. Moving forward, the field must develop validated biomarkers of choline adequacy in free-living populations, harmonize intervention protocols, and define context-specific requirements across obesity, pregnancy, and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapy use. These efforts will refine dietary recommendations and solidify choline’s role in lifelong brain and metabolic health. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study evaluated the association between nutrient intake adequacy during early pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk through a prospective cohort study of Korean pregnant women. Methods: A total of 2227 singleton pregnant women were included in this study. Dietary assessment was conducted once during early pregnancy enrollment using the 24 h dietary recall method. The collected dietary data were analyzed using the CAN-Pro Korean food composition database to calculate nutrient-specific intake levels. Nutrient Adequacy Ratio (NAR) for each nutrient and Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR), which integrates individual NARs, were calculated based on intake levels. GDM diagnosis was determined using oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) results conducted between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. Relative risk (RR) for each individual nutrient was calculated, and logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate odds ratios (OR) for GDM risk according to MAR quartiles. Results: Among 2227 participants, 157 women developed GDM. Compared to the highest MAR quartile, women in the lowest quartile showed significantly increased GDM risk (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.10–2.99), with the second lowest quartile demonstrating similarly elevated risk (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.06–2.88). Among individual nutrients, inadequate vitamin D intake was associated with the highest GDM risk (RR = 3.84), followed by insufficient intakes of vitamin K (RR = 1.89), vitamin B6 (RR = 1.62), niacin (RR = 1.54), and calcium (RR = 1.39). Body mass index-stratified analysis revealed that the association between low nutritional adequacy and GDM risk was particularly pronounced in women with BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2, showing up to a four-fold increased risk in the lowest adequacy groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that low overall dietary adequacy and nutritional imbalance during early pregnancy are associated with increased GDM risk. The results underscore the importance of ensuring adequate and balanced nutrition during early pregnancy for GDM prevention. Full article
