The use of molybdenum-based alloys as materials for components operating under high temperatures and significant mechanical loads is widely recognized due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, their low high-temperature resistance remains a critical limitation, which can be effectively mitigated by applying protective coatings. In this study, we investigate the influence of a two-step coating process on the properties and performance of the TZM molybdenum alloy. In the first step, pack cementation was performed. Simultaneous surface saturation with aluminum and silicon, a process known as aluminosiliconizing, was conducted at 1000 °C for 6 h. The saturating mixture comprised powders of aluminum, silicon, aluminum oxide, and ammonium chloride. The second step involved the application of a pre-ceramic coating based on polyhydrosiloxane modified with silicon and boron. This treatment effectively eliminated pores and cracks within the coating. Thermodynamic calculations were carried out to evaluate the likelihood of aluminizing and siliconizing reactions under the applied conditions. Aluminosiliconizing of the TZM alloy resulted in the formation of a protective layer 20–30 µm thick. The multiphase structure of this layer included intermetallics (Al63Mo37, MoAl3), nitrides (Mo2N, AlN, Si3N4), oxide (Al2O3), and a solid solution α-Mo(Al). Subsequent treatment with silicon- and boron-modified polyhydrosiloxane led to the development of a thicker surface layer, 130–160 µm in thickness, composed of crystalline Si, amorphous SiO2, and likely amorphous boron. A transitional oxide layer ((Al,Si)2O3) 5–7 µm thick was also observed. The resulting coating demonstrated excellent structural integrity and chemical inertness in an argon atmosphere at temperatures up to 1100 °C. High-temperature stability at 800 °C was observed for both coating types: aluminosiliconizing, and aluminosiliconizing followed by the pre-ceramic coating. Moreover, additional oxide layers of SiO2 and B2O3 formed on the two-step coated TZM alloy during heating at 800 °C for 24 h. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is used for high-speed rotating bearings in machine tools, aircraft, and turbo pumps due to its excellent material properties such as high-temperature strength, hardness, and fracture toughness. Grinding with fixed abrasives enables high shape accuracy and high efficiency in machining brittle materials. However, it is difficult to completely remove surface damage, which limits its use in products requiring a nano surface. These defects also result in reduced reliability and shortened lifespan. Magnetic-assisted polishing (MAP) is a technology that can achieve a fine surface by using a mixture of iron powder and abrasives, but it requires a lot of time due to the low material removal rate (MRR). Therefore, this study developed a hybrid processing technology using a metal-bonded grinding wheel and a slurry with hard abrasives for the high precision of silicon nitride ceramic ball bearings. Experiments were conducted in order to compare and analyze the surface roughness and material removal rate. Through MAP, using a grinding wheel with low grit (#325), high-efficiency machining performance was confirmed with a maximum material removal rate of 1.193 mg/min. In MAP, using a grinding wheel with high grit (#2000), a nano-level surface roughness of 6.5 nm Ra was achieved. Full article

During the powder bed fusion of metals using a laser beam (PBF-LB/M), an inert atmosphere is maintained in the build chamber to avoid reactions of the liquid metal with ambient air leading to the creation of oxides or nitrides, which alter the mechanical properties of the processed part. A continuous gas flow is guided over the process zone to remove spatters and fumes. This flow induces a convective heat transfer from the molten metal to the gas, which, depending on the level of the heat flow, may alter the melt pool dimensions by influencing the cooling rate. The present work investigated these phenomena with single-line trials, both experimentally and numerically. For this reason, a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics model was utilized to investigate the temperatures of the melt pool, cooling rates, and the integral heat balance with various gas atmospheres. In parallel, an on-axis pyrometer was set up on an experimental PBF-LB/M machine to capture the surface emissions of the melt pool. The atmosphere in the simulations and experiments was varied between argon, helium, and two mixtures thereof. The results showed a slight increase in the cooling rates with an increasing fraction of helium in the process gas. Consistently, a slight decrease in the melt pool temperatures and dimensions was found. Full article

In this research, we developed boron-rich nanoparticles that can be used for boron neutron capture therapy as potential carriers for boron delivery to cancerous tissues. Functionalized carbonated boron nitride nanostructures (CBNs) were successfully synthesized in self-propagating combustion waves in mixtures of high-nitrogen explosives and boron compounds. The products’ composition, morphology, and structural features were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen sorption analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The extreme conditions prevailing in combustion waves favor the formation of nanosized CBN hollow grains with highly disordered structures that are properly functionalized on the surface and inside the particles. Therefore, they are characterized by high porosity and good dispersibility in water, which are necessary for medical applications. During biological tests, a concentration-dependent effect of the obtained boron nitride preparations on the viability of normal and neoplastic cells was demonstrated. Moreover, the assessment of the degree of binding of fluorescently labeled nanoparticles to selected cells confirmed the relationships between the cell types and the concentration of the preparation at different incubation time points. The processing route of Sm2Fe17 carbides is shorter than that of nitrides, which can potentially be used for cost-effective mid-performance magnets’ production. The magnetic properties of Sm2Fe17Cx compounds can be controlled at the annealing step, which allows them to be used for a variety of applications. In this work, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were used for characterization of the structure and magnetic properties of Sm2Fe17Cx compounds. The powder samples were prepared by high-energy ball milling of Sm2Fe17 mixtures with carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphite with subsequent annealing. The formation of Sm2Fe17Cx compounds after annealing was followed by the formation of α-Fe and amorphous Sm2O3. The hyperfine field values of Fe atoms of all the Sm2Fe17 lattice sites increased by 12% on average after annealing that was caused by carbon diffusion. The coercivity of the samples peaked after annealing at 375 °C. The samples with CNT demonstrated an increase of up to 14% in coercivity and 5% in specific remanence in the range of 250–375 °C annealing temperatures. Full article

Ti6Al4V is the most used alloy for implants because of its excellent biocompatibility; however, its low wear resistance limits its use in the biomedical industry. The additive manufacturing (AM) of Ti6Al4V is a well-established technique that is being used in many fields. However, the AM of Ti6Al4V composites is currently under investigation, and its manufacture using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) would result in a great benefit for many industries. The one-step novel concept proposed uses a gas-controlled L-PBF system that enables the AM of layers with different compositions. Six millimeter-edged cubes of Ti6Al4V were manufactured in an Ar atmosphere and coated with in situ Ti6Al4V/TiN layers by using an Ar–N2 mixture given the direct reaction between titanium and nitrogen. Unreinforced Ti6Al4V presented a martensitic microstructure, and TiN reinforcement dendrites and a minor Ti2N phase were gradually introduced into an α + β basketweave titanium matrix. The composites’ microhardness, nanohardness, and elastic modulus were 2, 3, and 1.5 times higher, respectively, than those of the Ti6Al4V. Porosity levels (caused by a lack of fusion, trapping gases, and interdendritic porosity), ranged from 7 to 12% (most measured 20–40 µm) and increased with the reinforcement content (15 to 25%). A scaled-up, proof-of-concept design of a hip implant stem was 3D printed using this nitriding method. Since the neck of the stem (top part) is more susceptible to the fracture and fretting corrosion process, the resulting graded material part consisted of unreinforced Ti6Al4V at the bottom and Ti6Al4V/TiN at the top. This change was controlled by gradually adding nitrogen to the atmosphere; moreover, it was found that the more nitrogen in the chamber, the more TiN reinforcement formed in the part. A microhardness of ~450 HV0.1 was measured at the bottom and gradually increased to ~900 HV0.1, with the increment corresponding to the in situ TiN reinforcement amount. Full article

The iron nitride materials, especially α″-Fe16N2, are considered one of the most promising candidates for future rare-earth-free magnets. However, the mass production of α″-Fe16N2 powders as a raw material for permanent magnets is still challenging. In this work, starting from iron lumps as a raw material, we have managed to prepare the α″-Fe16N2 powders via the gas atomization method, followed by subsequent nitriding in an ammonia–hydrogen gas mixture stream. The particle size was controlled by changing the gas atomization preparation conditions. X-ray diffractograms (XRD) analyses show that the prepared powders are composed of α″-Fe16N2 and α-Fe phases. The α″-Fe16N2 volume ratio increases with decreasing powder size and increasing nitriding time, reaching a maximum of 57% α″-Fe16N2 phase in powders with size below 32 ± 3 μm after 96 h nitridation. The saturation magnetization reaches the value of 237 emu/g and a reasonable coercivity value of 884 Oe. Compared to the saturation magnetization values of α-Fe powders, the α″-Fe16N2 powders prepared through our proposed approach show an increase of up to 10% in saturation and demonstrate the possibility of mass production of α″-Fe16N2 powders as precursors of permanent magnets without rare earths. The effect of ion nitriding and nitriding in a melamine-based powder mixture on the structure and properties of AISI A290C1M steel was studied in the paper. Using ion nitriding made it possible to shorten the technological cycle’s duration by 5–6 times compared to two-stage nitriding, optimize the diffusion layer’s composition, provide a technologically simple process automation scheme, and improve the quality of nitride coatings. After the proposed mode of ion nitriding, a saturated layer depth of 0.25–0.32 mm, hardness up to 1000 HV, and an increase in wear resistance by 2.17 times were obtained. Using 95% melamine + 5% sodium fluoride during nitriding in a powder mixture significantly simplified the technological process. It did not require additional expensive equipment, which in turn significantly simplified the nitriding process with energy savings. The proposed technology and the composition of the mixture contributed to a significant acceleration of the nitriding process of AISI A290C1M steel, compared to traditional gas nitriding, and to obtain a hardness of the nitride layer of 970 HV and an increase in wear resistance by 2.6 times. A nitriding speed is explained by a significantly higher amount of atomic nitrogen when using melamine instead of ammonia and by the almost simultaneous disintegration of nanodispersed particles when the nitriding temperature was reached. After nitriding in a powder mixture, steel was subject to the slightest wear. Full article

Thermally synthesized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) over pulsed laser deposition (PLD) produced urchin-like iron oxide (FeOx) thin films were fabricated via in situ and ex situ processes. Materials characterisation revealed the formation of the graphitic allotrope of C3N4 and a bandgap Eg for the combined FeOx/g-C3N4 of 1.87 and 1.95 eV for each of the different fabrication strategies. The in situ method permitted to develop a novel petal-like morphology, whereas for the ex situ method, a morphological mixture between FeOx bulk and g-C3N4 was observed. Given the improved optical and morphological properties of the in situ film, it was employed as a proof of concept for the direct photocatalysis and photo-Fenton removal of ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) under visible light irradiation. Improved photocatalytic activity (rate constant k = 8.28 × 10−4 min−1) was observed, with further enhancement under photo-Fenton conditions (k = 2.6 × 10−3 min−1), in comparison with FeOx + H2O2 (k = 1.6 × 10−3 min−1) and H2O2 only (k = 1.3 × 10−4 min−1). These effects demonstrate the in situ methodology as a viable route to obtain working heterojunctions for solar photocatalysis in thin-film materials, rather than the more common powder materials. Magnesium-aluminum oxynitride MgAlON has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its unique properties and potential applications. Herein, we report a systematic study on the synthesis of MgAlON with tunable composition by employing the combustion method. The Al/Al2O3/MgO mixture was combusted in nitrogen gas, and the effects of Al nitriding and oxidation by Mg(ClO4)2 on the exothermicity of the mixture, combustion kinetics, and phase composition of combustion products were investigated. Our results demonstrate that the MgAlON lattice parameter can be controlled by varying the AlON/MgAl2O4 ratio in the mixture, which corresponds to the MgO content in the combustion products. This work provides a new pathway for tailoring the properties of MgAlON, which may have significant implications in various technological applications. In particular, we reveal the dependence of the MgAlON lattice parameter on the AlON/MgAl2O4 ratio. The limitation of the combustion temperature by 1650 °C resulted in obtaining submicron powders with a specific surface area of about 3.8 m/g2. Full article

At present, the carbothermal reduction and nitridation process is an important method for the large-scale preparation of aluminum nitride powder in industry, but the tremendous energy consumption caused by long-term high temperatures seriously restricts its practical application. To solve this problem, the (NaAlO2+C) mixture with a mole ratio of NaAlO2:C = 1:3 was prepared based on sodium aluminate and carbon black which has been ball milled with anhydrous ethanol as a grinding liquid. The crystal structure evolution and nitridation reaction behavior of sodium aluminate at 800–1600 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of carbon were systematically studied employing XRD, SEM, and ICP-MS. The results showed that: high energy θ-Al2O3, η-Al2O3 can be excited by heating sodium aluminate to 1400 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of carbon. The transformation process between sodium aluminate and aluminum nitride is carried out via the direct nitridation of θ-Al2O3, η-Al2O3. Benefiting from the direct nitridation of η-Al2O3 and θ-Al2O3, high-purity aluminum nitride powder with a particle size of 0.50 ± 0.18 μm was synthesized at 1400 °C. This work provides a new path for reduced energy consumption in the aluminum nitride industry. Full article

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a metal-free heterogeneous catalyst that has attracted attention because of its good chemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. In the work presented herein, F,O,S-codoped carbon nitride was synthesized by heating a mixture of melamine cyanurate and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid at 550 °C for 50 min. The obtained product was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, CHNS elemental analysis, total combustion-ion chromatography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Results point to an F,O,S-codoped g-C3N4. The material was applied as a photocatalyst for the formation of benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles by condensation–aromatization of 2-aminophenol or 1,2-phenylenediamine with suitable aldehydes (viz. benzaldehyde, 4-chlorobenzaldehyde, 2-naphthaldehyde, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 2-methoxybenzaldehyde), obtaining yields of up to 90% in 15 min under visible light irradiation, with good selectivity and reusability. Thus, the reported findings suggest that this F,O,S-codoped g-C3N4 may hold promise as a metal-free photocatalyst for the rapid synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles and 2-arylbenzimidazoles. Full article

The ceramic samples fabricated by spark plasma sintering of powder mixtures based on silicon nitride (Si3N4) were investigated. The powder mixtures were made by wet chemical methods from commercial α-Si3N4 powder (the particle size <5 μm) and Y2O3-Al2O3 sintering additive (3% to 10% wt.). Sintering was carried out at the heating rate of 50 °C/min and the load of 70 MPa until the shrinkage end. The powder mixtures and ceramic samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The shrinkage of the powder mixtures during sintering was analyzed, and the activation energy of sintering was calculated according to the Young-Cutler model. The density, microhardness, and fracture toughness of the ceramic samples were also measured. All samples had high relative densities (98%–99%), Vickers microhardness 15.5–17.4 GPa, and Palmquist fracture toughness, 3.8–5.1 MPa∙m1/2. An increase in the amount of sintering additive led to a decrease in the shrinkage temperature of the powder mixtures. The amount of β-Si3N4 in the ceramics decreased monotonically with the increasing amount of sintering additive. The shrinkage rate did not decrease to zero when the maximum compaction was reached at 3% wt. of the sintering additive. On the contrary, it increased sharply due to the beginning of the Si3N4 decomposition. Full article

In this study, biomimetic borate-based bioactive glass scaffolds containing hexagonal boron nitride hBN nanoparticles (0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2% by weight) were manufactured with the polymer foam replication technique to be used in hard tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. To create three-dimensional cylindrical-shaped scaffolds, polyurethane foams were used as templates and covered using a suspension of glass and hBN powder mixture. Then, a heat treatment was applied at 570 °C in an air atmosphere to remove the polymer foam from the structure and to sinter the glass structures. The structural, morphological, and mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were examined in detail. The in vitro bioactivity of the prepared composites was tested in simulated body fluid, and the release behavior of gentamicin sulfate and 5-fluorouracil from glass scaffolds were analyzed separately as a function of time. The cytotoxicity was investigated using osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. The findings indicated that the hBN nanoparticles, up to a certain concentration in the glass matrix, improved the mechanical strength of the glass scaffolds, which mimic the cancellous bone. Additionally, the inclusion of hBN nanoparticles enhanced the in vitro hydroxyapatite-forming ability of bioactive glass composites. The presence of hBN nanoparticles accelerated the drug release rates of the system. It was concluded that bioactive glass/hBN composite scaffolds mimicking native bone tissue could be used for bone tissue repair and regeneration applications. Full article

This study deals with the microstructure, mechanical, and wear properties of the extruded ZK60 matrix composites strengthened with 45 µm, 15% silicon carbide particle (SiC) and 760 nm, 0.2–0.5% aluminium nitride (AlN) nanoparticle reinforcements. First, the reinforcement elements of the composites, SiC and AlN mixtures were prepared in master-magnesium powder, and compacts were formed under 450 MPa pressure and then sintered. Second, the compacted reinforcing elements were placed into the ZK60 alloy matrix at the semi-solid melt temperature, and the melt was mixed by mechanical mixing. After the melts were mixed for 30 min and a homogeneous mixture was formed, the mixtures were poured into metal moulds and composite samples were obtained. After being homogenized for 24 h at 400 °C, the alloys were extruded with a 16:1 deformation ratio at 310 °C and a ram speed of 0.3 mm/s to create final composite samples. After microstructure characterization and hardness analysis, the dry friction behavior of all composite samples was investigated. Depending on the percentage ratios of SIC and AlN reinforcement elements in the matrix, it was seen that the compressive strength and hardness of the composites increased, and the friction coefficient decreased. While the wear rate of the unreinforced ZK60 alloy was 3.89 × 10−5 g/m, this value decreased by 26.2 percent to 2.87 × 10−5 g/m in the 0.5% AlN + 15% SiC reinforced ZK 60 alloy. Full article
