The increasing complexity of modern food production demands advanced solutions for quality control (QC), safety monitoring, and process optimization. This review systematically explores recent advancements in machine learning (ML) for QC across six domains: Food Quality Applications; Defect Detection and Visual Inspection Systems; Ingredient Optimization and Nutritional Assessment; Packaging—Sensors and Predictive QC; Supply Chain—Traceability and Transparency and Food Industry Efficiency; and Industry 4.0 Models. Following a PRISMA-based methodology, a structured search of the Scopus database using thematic Boolean keywords identified 124 peer-reviewed publications (2005–2025), from which 25 studies were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, methodological rigor, and innovation. Neural networks dominated the reviewed approaches, with ensemble learning as a secondary method, and supervised learning prevailing across tasks. Emerging trends include hyperspectral imaging, sensor fusion, explainable AI, and blockchain-enabled traceability. Limitations in current research include domain coverage biases, data scarcity, and underexplored unsupervised and hybrid methods. Real-world implementation challenges involve integration with legacy systems, regulatory compliance, scalability, and cost–benefit trade-offs. The novelty of this review lies in combining a transparent PRISMA approach, a six-domain thematic framework, and Industry 4.0/5.0 integration, providing cross-domain insights and a roadmap for robust, transparent, and adaptive QC systems in the food industry. Wireless pipeline robots often suffer from localization drift and position loss due to electromagnetic attenuation and shielding in complex pipeline configurations, which hinders accurate pipeline reconstruction. This paper proposes a trajectory reconstruction method based on Geometric Constraint–Long Short-Term Memory (GC-LSTM). First, a motor control system based on Field-Oriented Control (FOC) was developed for the proposed pipeline robot; second, trajectory errors are mitigated by exploiting pipeline geometric characteristics; third, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is used to predict and compensate the robot’s velocity when odometer slip occurs; finally, multi-sensor fusion is employed to obtain the reconstructed trajectory. In straight-pipe tests, the GC-LSTM method reduced the maximum deviation and mean absolute deviation by 69.79% and 72.53%, respectively, compared with the Back Propagation (BP) method, resulting in a maximum deviation of 0.0933 m and a mean absolute deviation of 0.0351 m. In bend-pipe tests, GC-LSTM reduced the maximum deviation and the mean absolute deviation by 60.48% and 69.91%, respectively, compared with BP, yielding a maximum deviation of 0.2519 m and a mean absolute deviation of 0.0850 m. The proposed method significantly improves localization accuracy for wireless pipeline robots and enables more precise reconstruction of pipeline environments, providing a practical reference for accurate localization in pipeline inspection applications. This study investigates the use of deep reinforcement learning techniques to improve traffic signal control systems through the integration of deep learning and reinforcement learning approaches. The purpose of a deep reinforcement learning architecture is to provide adaptive control via a reinforcement learning interface and deep learning for the representation of traffic queues with regards to signal timings. This has driven recent research, which has reported success in the use of such dynamic approaches. To further explore this success, we apply a deep reinforcement learning algorithm over a grid of 21 interconnected traffic signalized intersections and monitor its effectiveness. Unlike previous research, which often examined isolated or idealized scenarios, our model is applied to the real-world traffic network of Via “Prenestina” in eastern Rome. We utilize the Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) platform to simulate and test the model. This study has two main objectives: ensure the algorithm’s correct implementation in a real traffic network and assess its impact on public transportation, incorporating an additional priority reward for public transport. The simulation results confirm the model’s effectiveness in optimizing traffic signals and reducing delays for public transport. Full article

Corporate greenwashing has emerged as a pervasive and systemic threat to global sustainability efforts, undermining regulatory effectiveness and obstructing progress toward multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As environmental opportunism increasingly diffuses across interconnected industrial supply networks, it evolves from isolated corporate misconduct into a chain-level governance challenge with significant systemic risks. Traditional governance mechanisms—whether market-based self-regulation or top-down administrative control—have proven insufficient, while the effectiveness of hybrid approaches integrating administrative coordination with market dynamics remains largely unexplored. This study investigates China’s Chain Leader Policy, a novel hybrid governance model that combines formal administrative authority with market coordination mechanisms to systematically address environmental opportunism across industrial supply networks, and its impact on mitigating greenwashing. Employing a multi-period difference-in-differences design on 12,334 firm-year observations of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2023, we find that the policy reduces corporate greenwashing by 10.8% through four pathways: stabilizing supply–demand relationships, reducing coordination costs, fostering green collaborative innovation, and enhancing external scrutiny via social networks. Coercive isomorphism strengthens these effects, while mimetic isomorphism weakens them; impacts are more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, firms with stronger green awareness and higher levels of internationalization, and in more concentrated industries. By operationalizing embedded autonomy theory in an environmental governance context, this research extends theoretical understanding of hybrid governance mechanisms, offers robust empirical evidence for designing policies to curb greenwashing, and provides a replicable framework for achieving corporate environmental sustainability worldwide. Understanding flow dynamics in open-channel node systems is crucial for designing effective hydraulic engineering solutions and minimizing energy losses. This study investigates how junction geometry—specifically the lateral inflow angle (α = 45° and 60°) and the longitudinal bed slope (I = 0.0011 to 0.0051)—influences the water velocity distribution and hydraulic losses in a rigid-bed Y-shaped open-channel junction. Experiments were performed in a 0.3 m wide and 0.5 m deep rectangular flume, with controlled inflow conditions simulating steady-state discharge scenarios. Flow velocity measurements were obtained using a PEMS 30 electromagnetic velocity probe, which is capable of recording three-dimensional velocity components at a high spatial resolution, and electromagnetic flow meters for discharge control. The results show that a lateral inflow angle of 45° induces stronger flow disturbances and higher local loss coefficients, especially under steeper slope conditions. In contrast, an angle of 60° generates more symmetric velocity fields and reduces energy dissipation at the junction. These findings align with the existing literature and highlight the significance of junction design in hydraulic structures, particularly under high-flow conditions. The experimental data may be used for calibrating one-dimensional hydrodynamic models and optimizing the hydraulic performance of engineered channel outlets, such as those found in hydropower discharge systems or irrigation networks. Identifying the activation status of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in real-world driving environments is crucial for safety, responsibility attribution, and accident forensics. Unlike prior studies that primarily rely on simulation-based settings or unsynchronized data, we collected a multimodal dataset comprising synchronized controller area network (CAN)-bus and smartphone-based inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals from drivers on consistent highway sections under both ADAS-enabled and manual modes. Using these data, we developed lightweight classification pipelines based on statistical and deep learning approaches to explore the feasibility of distinguishing ADAS operation. Our analyses revealed systematic behavioral differences between modes, particularly in speed regulation and steering stability, highlighting how ADAS reduces steering variability and stabilizes speed control. Although classification accuracy was moderate, this study provides one of the first data-driven demonstrations of ADAS status detection under naturalistic conditions. Beyond classification, the released dataset enables systematic behavioral analysis and offers a valuable resource for advancing research on driver monitoring, adaptive ADAS algorithms, and accident forensics. Management of smart greenhouses represents a transformative advancement in precision agriculture, enabling sustainable intensification of food production through the integration of multi-sensor networks, intelligent control, and sophisticated data filtering techniques. Unlike conventional greenhouses that rely on manual monitoring, smart greenhouses combine environmental sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven decision making to optimize microclimates, improve yields, and enhance resource efficiency. This review systematically investigates three key technological pillars, multi-sensor monitoring, intelligent control, and data filtering techniques, for smart greenhouse environment management. A structured literature screening of 114 peer-reviewed studies was conducted across major databases to ensure methodological rigor. The analysis compared sensor technologies such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), light, and energy to evaluate the control strategies such as IoT-based automation, fuzzy logic, model predictive control, and reinforcement learning, along with filtering methods like time- and frequency-domain, Kalman, AI-based, and hybrid models. Major findings revealed that multi-sensor integration enhanced precision and resilience but faced changes in calibration and interoperability. Intelligent control improved energy and water efficiency yet required robust datasets and computational resources. Advanced filtering strengthens data integrity but raises concerns of scalability and computational cost. The distinct contribution of this review was an integrated synthesis by linking technical performance to implementation feasibility, highlighting pathways towards affordable, scalable, and resilient smart greenhouse systems. The digital transformation of low-voltage distribution networks demands a renewed perspective on both regulatory frameworks and metering technologies. This article explores the intersection between incentive structures and metering technologies, focusing on how smart metering can act as a strategic enabler for flexibility in electricity distribution. Starting with the Spanish regulatory evolution and European benchmarking, the shift from asset-based regulation and how it can be complemented with performance-oriented incentives to support advanced metering functionalities is analyzed. On the technical side, the capabilities of smart meters and the performance of communication protocols (such as PRIME, G3-PLC, and 6LoWPAN) highlighting their suitability for real-time observability and control are examined. The findings identify a way to enhance regulatory frameworks for fully harnessing the operational potential of smart metering systems. This article calls for a hybrid, context-aware approach that integrates regulatory evolution with metering structures innovation to unlock the full value of smart metering in the energy transition. Connected and Autonomous Vehicles are promising for advancing traffic safety and efficiency. However, the increased connectivity makes these vehicles vulnerable to a broad array of cyber threats. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach for intrusion detection in in-vehicle networks, specifically focusing on the Controller Area Network bus. Ensemble learning techniques are combined with sophisticated optimization techniques and dynamic adaptation mechanisms to develop a robust, accurate, and computationally efficient intrusion detection system. The proposed system is evaluated on real-world automotive network datasets that include various attack types (e.g., Denial of Service, fuzzy, and spoofing attacks). With these results, the proposed hybrid adaptive system achieves an unprecedented accuracy of 99.995% with a 0.00001% false positive rate, which is significantly more accurate than traditional methods. In addition, the system is very robust to novel attack patterns and is tolerant to varying computational constraints and is suitable for deployment on a real-time basis in various automotive platforms. As this research represents a significant advancement in automotive cybersecurity, a scalable and proactive defense mechanism is necessary to safely operate next-generation vehicles. Full article

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) have emerged as a key enabler of more efficient, safer, and environmentally sustainable road traffic by allowing vehicles and infrastructure to exchange information and coordinate behavior. To evaluate their benefits, impact assessment studies are essential. However, most existing studies focus on individual C-ITS services in isolation, overlooking how combined deployments influence outcomes. This study addresses this gap by presenting the first systematic evaluation of individual and joint deployments of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) under diverse conditions. A dual-model simulation framework is applied, combining controlled artificial networks with calibrated real-world corridors in Upper Austria. This allows both statistical testing and validation of plausibility in real-world contexts. Key performance indicators include travel time and CO2 emissions, evaluated across varying lane configurations, numbers of traffic lights, demand levels, and equipment rates. The results demonstrate that C-ITS effectiveness is strongly context-dependent: while CACC generally provides larger efficiency gains, GLOSA yields consistent emission reductions, and the combined deployment offers conditional synergies but may also diminish benefits at high demand. The study contributes a guideline for selecting service configurations based on site conditions, thereby providing practical recommendations for future C-ITS rollouts. Full article

The Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) model has emerged as a foundational cybersecurity paradigm that eliminates implicit trust and enforces continuous verification across users, devices, and networks. This study presents a systematic literature review of 74 peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2025, spanning domains such as cloud computing (24 studies), Internet of Things (11), healthcare (7), enterprise and remote work systems (6), industrial and supply chain networks (5), mobile networks (5), artificial intelligence and machine learning (5), blockchain (4), big data and edge computing (3), and other emerging contexts (4). The analysis shows that authentication, authorization, and access control are the most consistently implemented ZTA components, whereas auditing, orchestration, and environmental perception remain underexplored. Across domains, the main challenges include scalability limitations, insufficient lightweight cryptographic solutions for resource-constrained systems, weak orchestration mechanisms, and limited alignment with regulatory frameworks such as GDPR and HIPAA. Cross-domain comparisons reveal that cloud and enterprise systems demonstrate relatively mature implementations, while IoT, blockchain, and big data deployments face persistent performance and compliance barriers. Overall, the findings highlight both the progress and the gaps in ZTA adoption, underscoring the need for lightweight cryptography, context-aware trust engines, automated orchestration, and regulatory integration. This review provides a roadmap for advancing ZTA research and practice, offering implications for researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers seeking to enhance cybersecurity resilience. Biobanks rely on ultra-low-temperature (ULT) storage for irreplaceable specimens, where precise 3D temperature field reconstruction is critical to preserve integrity. This is the first study to apply geostatistical methods to ULT field reconstruction in cryogenic biobanking systems. We address critical gaps in sparse-sensor environments where conventional interpolation fails due to vertical thermal stratification and non-stationary trends. Our physics-informed universal kriging framework introduces (1) the first domain-specific adaptation of universal kriging for 3D cryogenic temperature field reconstruction; (2) eight novel lag-binning methods explicitly designed for sparse, anisotropic sensor networks; and (3) a leave-one-out cross-validation-driven framework that automatically selects the optimal combination of trend model, binning strategy, logistic weighting, and variogram model fitting. Validated on real data collected from a 3000 L operating cryogenic chest freezer, the method achieves sub-degree accuracy by isolating physics-guided vertical trends (quadratic detrending dominant) and stabilising variogram estimation under sparsity. Unlike static approaches, our framework dynamically adapts to thermal regimes without manual tuning, enabling centimetre-scale virtual sensing. This work establishes geostatistics as a foundational tool for cryogenic thermal monitoring, with direct engineering applications in biobank quality control and predictive analytics. Full article

Unlike outdoor environments, where the Global Positioning System (GPS) provides reliable location information, indoor scenarios lack direct line-of-sight to satellites or cellular towers, rendering GPS inoperative and requiring alternative positioning techniques. Despite numerous approaches, indoor contexts with resource limitations, energy constraints, or physical restrictions continue to suffer from unreliable localization. Many existing methods employ a fixed number of reference anchors, which sets a hard balance between localization accuracy and energy consumption, forcing designers to choose between precise location data and battery life. As a response to this challenge, this paper proposes an energy-aware indoor positioning strategy based on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). The core principle is a self-adaptive control loop that continuously monitors the network’s positioning accuracy. Based on this real-time feedback, the system dynamically adjusts the number of active anchors, increasing them only when accuracy degrades and reducing them to save energy once stability is achieved. The method dynamically estimates relative coordinates by analyzing node encounters and contact durations, from which relative distances are inferred. Generalized Multidimensional Scaling (GMDS) is applied to construct a relative spatial map of the network, which is then transformed into absolute coordinates using reference nodes, known as anchors. The proposal is evaluated in a realistic simulated indoor MANET, assessing positioning accuracy, adaptation dynamics, anchor sensitivity, and energy usage. Results show that the adaptive mechanism achieves higher accuracy than fixed-anchor configurations in most cases, while significantly reducing the average number of required anchors and their associated energy footprint. This makes it suitable for infrastructure-poor, resource-constrained indoor environments where both accuracy and energy efficiency are critical. Full article

Hydrogels are hydrophilic, soft polymer networks with high water content and mechanical properties that are tunable; they are also biocompatible. Therefore, as biomaterials, they are of interest to modern medicine. In this review, the main applications of hydrogels in essential clinical applications are discussed. Chemical, physical, or hybrid crosslinking of either synthetic or natural polymers allow for the precise control of hydrogels’ physicochemical properties and their specific characteristics for certain applications, such as stimuli-responsiveness, drug retention and release, and biodegradability. Hydrogels are employed in gynecology to regenerate the endometrium, treat infections, and prevent pregnancy. They show promise in cardiology in myocardial infarction therapy through injectable scaffolds, patches in the heart, and medication delivery. In rheumatoid arthritis, hydrogels act as drug delivery systems, lubricants, scaffolds, and immunomodulators, ensuring effective local treatment. They are being developed, among other applications, as antimicrobial coatings for stents and radiotherapy barriers for urology. Ophthalmology benefits from the use of hydrogels in contact lenses, corneal bandages, and vitreous implants. They are used as materials for chemoembolization, tumor models, and drug delivery devices in cancer therapy, with wafers of Gliadel presently used in clinics. Applications in abdominal surgery include hydrogel-coated meshes for hernia repair or Janus-type hydrogels to prevent adhesions and aid tissue repair. Results from clinical and preclinical studies illustrate hydrogels’ diversity, though problems remain with mechanical stability, long-term safety, and mass production. Hydrogels are, in general, next-generation biomaterials for regenerative medicine, individualized treatment, and new treatment protocols. Full article

Terminal forensics in large mobile networks is a vital activity for identifying compromised devices and analyzing malicious actions. In contrast, the study described here begins with the domain of terminal forensics as the primary focus, rather than the threat itself. This paper proposes a new multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model that integrates complex picture fuzzy sets (CPFS) with the combinative distance-based assessment (CODAS), referred to throughout as complex picture fuzzy CODAS (CPF-CODAS). The aim is to assist in forensic analysis for detecting mobile botnet command and control (C&C) systems. The CPF-CODAS model accounts for the uncertainty, hesitation, and complex numerical values involved in expert decision-making, using degrees of membership as positive, neutral, and negative values. An illustrative forensic case study is constructed where three mobile devices are evaluated by three cybersecurity professionals based on six key parameters related to botnet activity. The results demonstrate that the model can effectively distinguish suspicious devices and support the use of the CPF-CODAS approach in terminal forensics of mobile networks. The robustness, symmetry, and advantages of this model over existing MCDM methods are confirmed through sensitivity and comparison analyses. In conclusion, this paper introduces a novel probabilistic decision-support tool that digital forensic specialists can incorporate into their workflow to proactively identify and prevent actions of mobile botnet C&C servers.
