Unsupervised feature selection aims to characterize the cluster structure of original features and select the optimal subset without label guidance. However, existing methods overlook fuzzy information in the data, failing to model cluster structures between data effectively, and rely on squared error for data reconstruction, exacerbating noise impact. Therefore, a robust unsupervised feature selection algorithm based on fuzzy anchor graphs (FWFGFS) is proposed. To address the inaccuracies in neighbor assignments, a fuzzy anchor graph learning mechanism is designed. This mechanism models the association between nodes and clusters using fuzzy membership distributions, effectively capturing potential fuzzy neighborhood relationships between nodes and avoiding rigid assignments to specific clusters. This soft cluster assignment mechanism improves clustering accuracy and the robustness of the graph structure while maintaining low computational costs. Additionally, to mitigate the interference of noise in the feature selection process, an adaptive fuzzy weighting mechanism is presented. This mechanism assigns different weights to features based on their contribution to the error, thereby reducing errors caused by redundant features and noise. Orthogonal tri-factorization is applied to the low-dimensional representation matrix. This guarantees that each center represents only one class of features, resulting in more independent cluster centers. Experimental results on 12 public datasets show that FWFGFS improves the average clustering accuracy by 5.68% to 13.79% compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Full article

Numerous studies have demonstrated that in residential areas of Western cities, both luxury and legacy effects significantly shape tree species diversity dynamics. However, the specific mechanisms driving these diversity patterns in China, where urbanization has progressed at an unprecedented pace, remain poorly understood. In this study we selected 20 residential settlements and 7 key socio-economic properties to investigate the change trend of tree diversity (2006–2021) and its socio-economic driving factors in Beijing. Our results demonstrate significant increases in total, native, and exotic tree species richness between 2006 and 2021 (p < 0.05), with average increases of 36%, 26%, and 55%, respectively. Total and exotic tree Shannon-Wiener indices, as well as exotic tree Simpson’s index, were also significantly higher in 2021 (p < 0.05). Housing prices was the dominant driver shaping total and exotic tree diversity, showing significant positive correlations with both metrics. In contrast, native tree diversity exhibited a strong positive association with neighborhood age. Our findings highlight two dominant mechanisms: legacy effect, where older neighborhoods preserve native diversity through historical planting practices, and luxury effect, where affluent communities drive exotic species proliferation through ornamental landscaping initiatives. These findings elucidate the dual dynamics of legacy conservation and luxury-driven cultivation in urban forest development, revealing how historical contingencies and contemporary socioeconomic forces jointly shape tree diversity patterns in urban ecosystems. In 1961, Los Angeles experienced the disastrous Bel Air fire, which swept through an affluent neighborhood situated in a hilly, WUI (wildland–urban interface) location. In January 2025, the city was devastated again by a nearly-simultaneous series of wildfires, the most severe of which took place close to the 1961 fire location. Disastrous WUI fires are, unfortunately, an anticipatable occurrence in many U.S. cities. A number of issues identified earlier remained the same. Some were largely solved, while other new ones have emerged. The paper examines the Palisades Fire of January, 2025 in this context. In the intervening decades, the population of the city grew substantially. But firefighting resources did not keep pace. Very likely, the single-most-important factor in causing the 2025 disasters is that the Los Angeles Fire Department operational vehicle count shrank to 1/5 of what it was in 1961 (per capita). This is likely why critical delays were experienced in the initial attack on the Palisades Fire, leading to a runaway conflagration. Two other crucial issues were the management of vegetation and the adequacy of water supplies. On both these issues, the Palisades Fire revealed serious problems. A problem which arose after 1961 involves the unintended consequences of environmental legislation. Communities will continue to be devastated by wildfires unless adequate vegetation management is accomplished. Yet, environmental regulations are focused on maintaining the status quo, often making vegetation management difficult or ineffective. House survival during a wildfire is strongly affected by whether good vegetation management practices and good building practices (“ignition-resistant” construction features) have been implemented. The latter have not been mandatory for housing built prior to 2008, and the vast majority of houses in the area predated such building code requirements. California has also suffered from a highly counterproductive stance on insurance regulation. This has resulted in some residents not having property insurance, due to the inhospitable operating conditions for insurance firms in the state. Because of the historical precedent, the details in this paper focus on the Palisades Fire; however, many of the lessons learned apply to managing fires in all WUI areas. Policy recommendations are offered, which could help to reduce the potential for future conflagrations. Full article

Spatial association analysis is essential for understanding interdependencies, spatial proximity, and distribution patterns within spatial data. The spatial scale is a key factor that significantly affects the result of spatial association mining. Traditional methods often rely on a fixed distance threshold (bandwidth) to define the scale effect, which can lead to scale sensitivity and discontinuity results. To address these limitations, this study introduces the Fuzzy Geographically Weighted Colocation Quotient (FGWCLQ) method. By integrating fuzzy theory, FGWCLQ replaces binary distance cutoffs with continuous membership functions, providing a more flexible and stable approach to spatial association mining. Using Point of Interest (POI) data from the Beijing urban area, FGWCLQ was applied to explore both intra- and inter-category spatial association patterns among star hotels, transportation facilities, and tourist attractions at different fuzzy neighborhoods. The results indicate that FGWCLQ can reliably discover global prevalent spatial associations among diverse facility types and visualize the spatial heterogeneity at various spatial scales. Compared to the deterministic GWCLQ method, FGWCLQ delivers more stable and robust results across varying spatial scales and generates more continuous association surfaces, which enable clear visualization of hierarchical clustering. Empirical findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the location of star hotels and supporting decision-making in urban planning. The method is available as an open-source Matlab package, providing a practical tool for diverse spatial association investigations. Full article

This study investigates the heavy metal contamination in urban and peri-urban soils of Thessaloniki, Greece, over a two-year period (2023–2024). A total of 208 composite soil samples were systematically collected from 52 sites representing diverse land uses, including high-traffic roadsides, industrial zones, residential neighborhoods, parks, and mixed-use areas, with sampling conducted both after the wet (winter) and dry (summer) seasons. Soil physicochemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity, texture, organic matter, and calcium carbonate content) were analyzed alongside the concentrations of heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. A pollution assessment employed the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (Cf), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), revealing variable contamination levels across the city, with certain hotspots exhibiting a considerable to very high ecological risk. Multivariate statistical analyses (PCA and HCA) identified distinct anthropogenic and geogenic sources of heavy metals. Health risk assessments, based on USEPA models, evaluated non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for both adults and children via ingestion and dermal contact pathways. The results indicate that while most sites present low to moderate health risks, specific locations, particularly near major transport and industrial areas, pose elevated risks, especially for children. The findings underscore the need for targeted monitoring and remediation strategies to mitigate the ecological and human health risks associated with urban soil pollution in Thessaloniki. Historic cities across the globe have experienced profound changes in their spatial and functional characteristics over time, and the historic core of Patan, Nepal, is no exception. The area surrounding Patan Durbar Square was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Between 2003 and 2007, the Kathmandu Valley was placed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger, largely due to various factors, including the rapid and unsympathetic transformation of its buffer zone. This study focuses on the Nagbahal neighborhood, a culturally significant locality within this buffer area, to explore a community-rooted and sustainable approach to conservation. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative and quantitative data gathered through interviews and surveys of native residents. It investigates the drivers and impacts of changes in the function, ownership, and physical form of traditional residential buildings, and assesses whether these changes align with principles of sustainable heritage conservation—social, cultural, economic, and environmental. While challenges persist, including the proliferation of reinforced concrete structures and limited enforcement of heritage policies, the findings reveal that Nagbahal remains resilient due to strong local traditions, active religious institutions, and cohesive social practices. The study offers transferable lessons for sustainable conservation in living heritage buffer zones globally. Full article

The swift expansion of China’s automotive manufacturing industry has spurred a constant rise in the demand for automotive parts production and distribution, making the optimization of distribution routes in complex environments a crucial research topic. Efficiently optimizing these routes not only boosts production efficiency and cuts costs for automotive manufacturers but also enhances supply chain management and advances sustainable development. This study focuses on the optimization of automotive parts distribution routes under a multi-manufacturer collaboration framework. An optimization model is proposed to minimize the total operational costs within a joint distribution system, incorporating an improved Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm to formulate an effective solution approach. The model considers complex factors such as dynamic demand, time-window constraints, and periodic distribution. A PIVNS algorithm integrating a virtual distribution center with an enhanced variable neighborhood search is designed to efficiently address the problem. The efficacy of the proposed model and algorithm is substantiated through extensive experiments grounded in real-world case studies. The results confirm the high computational efficiency of the proposed approach in solving large-scale problems, which significantly reduces distribution costs while improving overall supply chain performance. Specifically, the PIVNS algorithm achieves an average travel distance of 2020.85 km, an average runtime of 112.25 s, a total transportation cost of CNY 12,497.99, and a loading rate of 86.775%. These findings collectively highlight the advantages of the proposed method in enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and optimizing resource utilization. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for logistics optimization in automotive manufacturing and offers a significant reference for future research and practical applications in the field. Property crime is a pressing issue in maintaining social order and urban sustainability, particularly in regions marked by pronounced socioeconomic disparity. While the link between socioeconomic stress and crime is well established, regional variations in Thailand have not been fully examined. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine spatial patterns of property crime and identify the potential associations between property crime and socioeconomic environment across Thailand. Using nationally compiled property-crime data from official sources across all provinces of Thailand, we employed geographic information system (GIS) tools to conduct a spatial cluster analysis at the sub-national level across 76 provinces. Both global and local statistical techniques were applied to identify spatial associations between property-crime rates and neighborhood-level socioeconomic conditions. The results revealed that property-crime clusters are primarily concentrated in the south, while low-crime areas dominate parts of the north and northeast regions. To analyze the spatial dynamics of property crime, we used geospatial statistical models to investigate the influence of socioeconomic variables across provinces. We found that property-crime rates were significantly associated with monthly income, areas experiencing high levels of household debt, migrant populations, working-age populations, an uneducated labor force, and population density. Identifying associated factors and mapping geographic regions with significant spatial clusters is an effective approach for determining where issues concentrate and for deepening understanding of the underlying patterns and drivers of property crime. This study offers actionable insights for enhancing safety, resilience, and urban sustainability in Thailand’s diverse regional contexts by highlighting geographies of vulnerability. Full article

Path planning for picking safflowers is a key component in ensuring the efficient operation of robotic safflower-picking systems. However, existing single-arm picking devices have become a bottleneck due to their limited operating range, and a breakthrough in multi-arm cooperative picking is urgently needed. To address the issue of inadequate adaptability in current path planning strategies for dual-arm systems, this paper proposes a novel path planning method for dual-arm picking (LTSACO). The technique centers on a dynamic-weight heuristic strategy and achieves optimization through the following steps: first, the K-means clustering algorithm divides the target area; second, the heuristic mechanism of the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is improved by dynamically adjusting the weight factor of the state transition probability, thereby enhancing the diversity of path selection; third, a 2-OPT local search strategy eliminates path crossings through neighborhood search; finally, a cubic Bézier curve heuristically smooths and optimizes the picking trajectory, ensuring the continuity of the trajectory’s curvature. Experimental results show that the length of the parallelogram trajectory, after smoothing with the Bézier curve, is reduced by 20.52% compared to the gantry trajectory. In terms of average picking time, the LTSACO algorithm reduces the time by 2.00%, 2.60%, and 5.60% compared to DCACO, IACO, and the traditional ACO algorithm, respectively. In conclusion, the LTSACO algorithm demonstrates high efficiency and strong robustness, providing an effective optimization solution for multi-arm cooperative picking and significantly contributing to the advancement of multi-arm robotic picking systems. Urban commercial districts, with their unique characteristics, serve as a reflection of broader urban development patterns. However, only a handful of studies have harnessed point-of-interest (POI) data to model the intricate relationship between retail commercial space types and other factors. This paper endeavors to bridge this gap, focusing on the influence of urban development factors on retail commerce districts through the lens of POI data. Our exploration underscores how commercial zones impact the density of residential neighborhoods and the coherence of pedestrian pathways. To facilitate our investigation, we propose an ensemble clustering technique for identifying and outlining urban commercial areas, including Kernel Density Analysis (KDE), Density-based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN), Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR). Our research uses the city of Manchester as a case study, unearthing the relationship between commercial retail catchment areas and a range of factors (retail commercial space types, land use function, walking coverage). These include land use function, walking coverage, and green park within the specified areas. As we explore the multiple impacts of different urban development factors on retail commerce models, we hope this study acts as a springboard for further exploration of the untapped potential of POI data in urban business development and planning. As power grids continue to expand in scale, the occurrence of cascading failures within them can lead to significant economic losses. Therefore, assessing the criticality of grid nodes is crucial for ensuring the secure and stable operation of power systems and for mitigating losses when cascading failures occur. The classical Local Link Similarity (LLS) algorithm in complex networks evaluates the importance of network nodes from a neighborhood topology perspective, but it suffers from issues such as the excessive weighting of node degrees and the neglect of electrical parameters. Based on the classical algorithm, this paper first develops the Improved Local Link Similarity (ILLS) algorithm by substituting alternative similarity metrics and comparatively evaluating their performance. Building upon the ILLS, we then propose the Electrical LLS (ELLS) algorithm by integrating node power flow and electrical coupling connectivity as multiplicative factors, with optimal combinations determined via simulation experiments. Compared to classical approaches, ELLS demonstrates superior adaptability to power grid contexts and delivers enhanced accuracy in power system node importance assessments. These algorithms are applied to rank the node importance in the IEEE 300-bus system. Their performance is evaluated using the loss-of-load-size metric, comparing ELLS, ILLS, and the classical algorithm. The results demonstrate that under the loss-of-load-size metric, the ELLS algorithm achieves approximately 25% higher accuracy compared to both the ILLS and the classical algorithm, validating its effectiveness. Amid the increasing complexity of urban risks, urban parks not only serve ecological and recreational functions but are increasingly becoming a critical spatial foundation supporting public psychological resilience and social recovery. This study aims to systematically evaluate the daily adaptability of urban parks in the context of micro-risks. The research integrates the theories of “restorative environments,” environmental safety perception, urban resilience, and social ecology to construct a five-dimensional framework for perceived resilience, encompassing resilience, safety, sociability, controllability, and adaptability. Additionally, a dynamic feedback mechanism of perception–behavior–reperception is introduced. Methodologically, the study utilizes the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) to identify 17 core indicators, constructs a causal structure and weighting system using DEMATEL-based ANP (DANP), and further employs the VIKOR model to simulate public preferences in a multi-criteria decision-making process. Taking three representative urban parks in Guangzhou as empirical case studies, the research identifies resilience and adaptability as key driving dimensions of the system. Factors such as environmental psychological resilience, functional diversity, and visual permeability show a significant path influence and priority intervention value. The empirical results further reveal significant spatial heterogeneity and group differences in the perceived resilience across ecological, neighborhood, and central park types, highlighting the importance of context-specific and user-adaptive strategies. The study finally proposes four optimization pathways, emphasizing the role of feedback mechanisms in enhancing urban park resilience and shaping “cognitive-friendly” spaces, providing a systematic modeling foundation and strategic reference for perception-driven urban public space optimization. Multi-hop routing over low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) has emerged as a promising technology for extending network coverage. However, existing protocols face high transmission disruption risks due to factors such as dynamic topology driven by stochastic events, dynamic link quality, and coverage holes induced by imbalanced energy consumption. To address this issue, we propose a failure risk-aware deep Q-network-based multi-hop routing (FRDR) protocol, aiming to reduce transmission disruption probability. First, we design a power regulation mechanism (PRM) that works in conjunction with pre-selection rules to optimize end-device node (EN) activations and candidate relay selection. Second, we introduce the concept of routing failure risk value (RFRV) to quantify the potential failure risk posed by each candidate next-hop EN, which correlates with its neighborhood state characteristics (i.e., the number of neighbors, the residual energy level, and link quality). Third, a deep Q-network (DQN)-based routing decision mechanism is proposed, where a multi-objective reward function incorporating RFRV, residual energy, distance to the gateway, and transmission hops is utilized to determine the optimal next-hop. Simulation results demonstrate that FRDR outperforms existing protocols in terms of packet delivery rate and network lifetime while maintaining comparable transmission delay. Full article

Urban outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) has become an increasingly critical issue under the pressures of urbanization and climate change. Comparative analyses of urban blocks with distinct spatial morphologies are essential for identifying OTC issues and proposing targeted optimization strategies. However, existing studies predominantly rely on microclimate numerical simulations, while comparative assessments of OTC from the human thermal perception perspective remain limited. This study employs the thermal walk method, integrating microclimatic measurements with thermal perception questionnaires, to conduct on-site OTC investigations across three urban blocks with contrasting spatial morphologies—a business district (BD), a residential area (RA), and a historical neighborhood (HN)—in Beijing, a hot summer and cold winter climate city. The results reveal substantial OTC differences among the blocks. However, these differences demonstrated great seasonal and temporal variations. In summer, BD exhibited the best OTC (mTSV = 1.21), while HN performed the worst (mTSV = 1.72). In contrast, BD showed the poorest OTC in winter (mTSV = −1.57), significantly lower than HN (−1.11) and RA (−1.05). This discrepancy was caused by the unique morphology of different blocks. The sky view factor emerged as a more influential factor affecting OTC over building coverage ratio and building height, particularly in RA (r = 0.689, p < 0.01), but its impact varied by block, season, and sunlight conditions. North–South streets generally perform better OTC than East–West streets, being 0.26 units cooler in summer and 0.20 units warmer in winter on the TSV scale. The study highlights the importance of incorporating more applicable physical parameters to optimize OTC in complex urban contexts and offering theoretical support for designing climate adaptive urban spaces. Urban mobility resilience plays a central role in sustainable urban planning discussions, especially considering the challenges of extreme events, climate change, and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels. This study evaluates urban mobility resilience in Petrópolis (RJ), incorporating socio-spatial heterogeneity and energy vulnerability. This research fills methodological gaps in the literature by proposing a composite resilience index that integrates technical, socioeconomic, and fossil fuel dependency variables within a robust multicriteria framework. We selected eleven variables relevant to urban mobility and organized them into inference blocks. We normalized the variables using Gaussian functions, respecting their maximization or minimization characteristics. We applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to assign weights to the criteria and then aggregated and ranked the results using multicriteria analysis. The final index represents the adaptive capacity of urban territories facing the energy crisis, and we applied it spatially to the neighborhoods of Petrópolis. The analysis identified a significant concentration of neighborhoods with low resilience, particularly in quadrants, combining deficiencies in public transportation, high dependence on fossil fuels, and socioeconomic constraints. Factors such as limited pedestrian access, insufficient motorized public transport coverage, and a high proportion of elderly residents emerged as significant constraints on urban resilience. Intervention strategies that promote active mobility, improve accessibility, and diversify transportation modes proved essential for strengthening local resilience. The results emphasize the urgent need for public policies to reduce energy vulnerability, foster active mobility, and promote equity in access to transportation infrastructure. Full article
