Aiming for convenience and the low cost of goods transfer between towns, this paper proposes a trade hub location and allocation method based on a novel artificial eagle-inspired optimization algorithm. Firstly, the trade hub location and allocation model is established, taking the total cost consisting of construction and transportation costs as the objective function. Then, to solve the nonlinear model, a novel artificial eagle optimization algorithm (AEOA) is proposed by simulating the collective migration behaviors of artificial eagles when facing a severe living environment. Three main strategies are designed to help the algorithm effectively explore the decision space: the situational awareness and analysis stage, the free exploration stage, and the flight formation integration stage. In the first stage, artificial eagles are endowed with intelligent thinking, thus generating new positions closer to the optimum by perceiving the current situation and updating their positions. In the free exploration stage, artificial eagles update their positions by drawing on the current optimal position, ensuring more suitable habitats can be found. Meanwhile, inspired by the consciousness of teamwork, a formation flying method based on distance information is introduced in the last stage to improve stability and success rate. Test results from the CEC2022 suite indicate that the AEOA can obtain better solutions for 11 functions out of all 12 functions compared with 8 other popular algorithms. Faster convergence speed and stronger stability of the AEOA are also proved by quantitative analysis. Finally, the trade hub location and allocation method is proposed by combining the optimization model and the AEOA. By solving two typical simulated cases, this method can select suitable hubs with lower construction costs and achieve reasonable allocation between hubs and the rest of the towns to reduce transportation costs. Thus, it is used to solve the trade hub location and allocation problem of Henan province in China to help the government make sound decisions. Full article

In the stage of high-quality development, the functional coordination between transportation systems and territorial space is a key issue for improving urban spatial efficiency. This paper breaks through the traditional volume-to-capacity ratio analysis paradigm and innovatively integrates the “production-living-ecological space” theory. By introducing an improved accessibility evaluation model and developing a coordination measurement algorithm, a three-dimensional evaluation mechanism covering development potential assessment, service efficiency diagnosis, and resource allocation optimization is established. Empirical research indicates that the improved accessibility indicators can precisely identify the transportation location value of regional functional cores, while the composite coordination indicators can deconstruct the spatiotemporal matching characteristics of “transportation facilities—spatial functions,” providing a dual decision-making basis for the redevelopment of existing space. This measurement system innovatively realizes the integration of planning transmission mechanisms with multi-scale application scenarios, guiding both overall spatial planning and urban renewal area re-optimization. The methodology, applied to the urban villages of Guangzhou, can significantly increase land utilization intensity and value. The research results offer a technical tool for cross-scale collaboration in land space planning reforms and provide theoretical innovations and practical guidance for the value reconstruction of existing spaces under the context of new urbanization. China’s rapid urbanization has given rise to the phenomenon of “urban villages”, which are often regarded as chaotic fringe areas in traditional studies. With the rise of the concept of resilient cities, the value of urban villages as potential carriers of sustainable development has been re-examined. This study adopted research methods such as field investigations, in-depth interviews, and conceptual sampling. By analyzing the interlinked governance relationship between Xiamen City and the urban villages in the Bay Area, aspects such as rural housing improvement, environmental governance, residents’ feedback, geographical pattern, and spatial production were evaluated. A field investigation was conducted in six urban villages within the four bays of Xiamen. A total of 45 people in the urban villages were interviewed, and the spatial status of the urban villages was recorded. This research found that following: (1) Different types of urban villages have formed significantly differentiated role positionings under the framework of regional governance. Residential community types XA and WL provide long-term and stable living spaces for migrant workers in Xiamen; tourism development types DS, HX, BZ, and HT allow the undertaking of short-term stay tourists and provide tourism services. (2) These urban villages achieve the construction of their resilience through resisting risks, absorbing policy resources, catering to the expansion of urban needs, and co-construction in coordination with planning. The multi-cultural inclusiveness of urban villages and their transformation led by cultural shifts have become the driving force for their sustainable development. Through the above mechanisms, urban villages have become the source of resilience and sustainability of healthy cities and provide a model reference for high-density urban construction. Full article

The objective of this study is to design, develop, and analyze a tri-wheeled trolley integrated with a motor that incorporates adjustable and foldable features. The purpose of a trolley is to allow users to easily transport items from one place to another. However, problems arise when transporting objects across challenging surfaces, such as up a flight of stairs, using a conventional cart. This innovation uses multiple engineering skills to determine and develop the best possible design for a stair-climbing trolley. A tri-wheel mechanism is integrated into its motorized design, meticulously engineered for adjustability, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of staircase dimensions. The designed trolley was constructed considering elements and processes such as a literature review, conceptual design, concept screening, concept scoring, 3D modelling, engineering design calculations, and simulations. The trolley was tested, and the measured pulling force data were compared with the theoretical calculations. A graph of the pulling force vs. load was plotted, in which both datasets showed similar increasing trends; hence, the designed trolley worked as expected. The development of this stair-climbing trolley can benefit people living in rural areas or low-cost buildings that are not equipped with elevators and can reduce injuries among the elderly. The designed stair-climbing trolley will not only minimize the user’s physical effort but also enhance safety. On top of that, the adjustable and foldable features of the stair-climbing trolley would benefit users living in areas with limited space. Full article

Urban parks are an important component of public urban spaces, which directly impact the living experiences of residents and the urban image. High-quality urban parks are crucial for enhancing the well-being of residents. This study selected Fukuoka, Japan, as the study site. Five urban parks were chosen to evaluate landscape visual quality by using the Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) method. The Semantic Differential (SD) method was used to get sample subjective landscape features. Meanwhile, sample objective landscape features were obtained by using semantic segmentation techniques in deep learning and combined with spatial analysis to understand their distribution. A regression model was established, which used the SBE values as the dependent variable and subjective landscape features as the independent variables to analyze the relationship between urban park landscape visual quality and subjective landscape features. The regression analysis revealed that sense of layering, harmony, interestingness, sense of order, and vitality were the core factors influencing visual quality. All five features had a significant positive impact on landscape visual quality. The sense of order was the most influential factor, which would be the key to enhancing the landscape perception experience. Moreover, the XGBoost model and SHAP value from machine learning were used to reveal the nonlinear relationships and significant threshold effects between urban park visual quality and five objective landscape features: openness, greenness, enclosure, vegetation diversity, and Shannon–Wiener diversity index. This study showed that when openness exceeded 0.27, the positive effect was significant. The optimal threshold for the greenness was 0.38. Vegetation diversity and enclosure had to be below 0.82 and 0.58, respectively, to have a positive impact. Meanwhile, the positive influence of the Shannon–Wiener diversity index reached its maximum at a value of 1.37. This study not only establishes a systematic method for diagnosing landscape problems and evaluating landscape visual quality but also provides both theoretical support and practical guidance for urban park landscape optimization. In the context of emergency management, individual or household decisions to engage in risk mitigation behaviors are widely recognized to be influenced by a benefit–cost perception (perceived applied value (PAV) vs. perceived economic value (PEV), respectively). To better understand how such decisions are made, we conducted a mail survey (N = 211) of households living in the Red River of the North Basin, North Dakota, in 2018. The survey is aimed at understanding the overall experience of households with flooding and their behavior toward advanced protective strategies against future floods by analyzing household PEV—their willingness to pay for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Satellite Enhanced Snowmelt Flood Prediction system. This paper presents a mediation model in which various predictors (flood risk, experience, flood knowledge, flood risk perception, flood preparedness, flood mitigation, and flood insurance) are analyzed in relation to the PAV of the new Satellite Enhanced Snowmelt Flood Predictions in the Red River of the North Basin, which, in turn, may shape the PEV of this product. We discuss the potential implications for both the emergency management research community and professionals regarding the application of advanced risk mitigation technologies to help protect and sustain communities across the country from floods and other natural disasters. This paper provides a greater understanding of the economic and social aspects of sustainability in the context of emergency management and community development. Full article

This article discusses the importance of cultural identity for ethnic youth, considering the challenges they face as migrants or from migrant backgrounds. It then develops the idea of using safe cultural spaces as a culturally responsive model of care for these youth. The data used are drawn from a qualitative study with 35 African heritage youth living in Aotearoa–New Zealand as participants. The study was guided by participatory action research (PAR) methodology principles. Data was collected using research workshops (adaption of focus groups) and qualitative survey questionnaires. PAR’s transformative lens, narrative inquiry, and inductive thematic analysis were used to identify and analyse the reported themes. Findings show that ethnic youth value their cultural identities primarily because, in the context of migration, where they constantly navigate multiple levels of social exclusion and marginality, it confers a sense of personhood, uniqueness, and belonging. However, trying to live their multiple cultures authentically presents many challenges. Accordingly, intentional initiatives that are culturally responsive and holistic are critical to support them in navigating this process healthily. Creating safe cultural spaces is proposed as a model of care. The article reports and discusses youth perspectives on what these spaces and the model of care would entail. Full article

Background: In elderly community services, information technology is reshaping the daily lives of older adults in unprecedented ways. It effectively addresses the issue of frailty in the community by strengthening support networks and dynamic risk management. Despite its vast potential, there remains a need to explore further enabling methods in the realm of elderly community services. Objectives: This study aims to provide a significant theoretical and practical foundation for information technology in this field by systematically analyzing the progress and trends of digital transformation facilitated by information technology. Materials and method: To map the advancements and emerging trends in this evolving field, this study conducts a bibliometric analysis of 461 relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (2004–2024). The research employs bibliometric methods and utilizes tools such as CiteSpace and VOSViewer to analyze collaborations, keywords, and citations, as well as to perform data visualization. Results: The findings indicate that current research hotspots mainly focus on “community care”, “access to care”, “technology”, and “older adults”.Potential development trends include (1) further exploration of information technology in elderly care to provide more precise health management solutions; (2) systematically building community elderly service systems to offer more detailed elderly care services; (3) strengthening interdisciplinary information sharing and research collaboration to drive innovation in community elderly care models; and (4) introducing targeted policy and financial support to improve the specific implementation framework of information technology in elderly community services. Conclusions: This study provides empirical support for the development of relevant theories and practices. Furthermore, the research outcomes offer valuable insights into business opportunities for practitioners and provide important recommendations for formulating elderly service policies. Full article

In structural and bridge engineering, the axle weights and interaxle spacings of heavy trucks are useful for assessing the capacity of existing bridges, developing live load models, and other issues. Weigh-in-motion data have become the most common source for recording axle weights and interaxle spacings; however, information is not as direct and may not be as precise as that from static surveys. Surveying vehicles by stopping them beside the highway is not common nowadays; nevertheless, surveys provide very reliable information on truck axle weights and interaxle spacing. In this study, data from three surveys on two Mexican highways recorded in 2016 and 2018 are provided. The data contain the gross vehicular weights, axle weights, and interaxle spacings of heavy trucks. The discussion is given as to how the provided information can be useful for the bridge and transportation engineering community and for reliability and code calibration tasks for Mexican bridges and a future design code for bridges in Mexico City. It is concluded that statistical values are consistent with WIM data, with differences due to different methods used, recording time, samples size and others, and that trucks heavier than the legal weight circulate in Mexican highways; static surveys are useful to strongly support this important issue. Further research to compare samples from different surveying techniques, as well as the use of the information to investigate load effects on bridges, is recommended. Full article

The “Green Riyadh” project in Saudi Arabia represents a major initiative to enhance urban sustainability by expanding green spaces throughout Riyadh City. The initiative aims to improve air and water quality, increase tree and plant coverage, and promote environmental well-being for city residents. However, accurately assessing the extent and quality of green spaces remains a significant challenge. Current methods for evaluating green areas and measuring tree density are limited in precision and reliability, preventing effective monitoring and planning. This paper proposes an innovative solution that leverages live satellite imagery and advanced deep learning techniques to address these challenges. We collect extensive satellite data from two sources and then build two separate analytical pipelines. These pipelines process high-resolution satellite imagery to identify trees and measure green density in vegetated areas. The experimental results show significant improvements in accuracy and efficiency, with the YOLOv11 model achieving a mAP@50 of 95.4%, precision of 94.6%, and recall of 90.2%. These findings offer a scalable and reliable alternative to traditional methods, enabling comprehensive progress evaluation and facilitating informed decision-making for urban planning. The proposed methodology not only supports the objectives of the “Green Riyadh” project but also sets a benchmark for green space evaluation that can be adopted by cities worldwide. Full article

In the context of cultural tourism integration, tourists’ spatial perception intention is an important carrier of spatial evaluation. In historic cultural districts represented by Jinan Mingfu City, tourists’ perceptual depth remains underexplored, leading to a misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality needs. Taking Jinan Mingfu City as a representative case of a historic cultural district, while the living heritage model has revitalized local economies, the absence of a tourist perspective has resulted in misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality requirements. This study establishes a technical framework encompassing “data crawling-factor aggregation-human-machine collaborative optimization”. It integrates Python web crawlers, SnowNLP sentiment analysis, and TF-IDF text mining technologies to extract physical elements; constructs a three-dimensional evaluation framework of “visual perception-spatial comfort-cultural experience” through SPSS principal component analysis; and quantifies physical element indicators such as green vision rate and signboard clutter index through street view semantic segmentation (OneFormer framework). A synergistic mechanism of machine scoring and manual double-blind scoring is adopted for correlation analysis to determine the impact degree of indicators and optimization strategies. This study identified that indicators such as green vision rate, shading facility coverage, and street enclosure ratio significantly influence tourist evaluations, with a severe deficiency in cultural spaces. Accordingly, it proposes targeted strategies, including visual landscape optimization, facility layout adjustment, and cultural scenario implementation. By breaking away from traditional qualitative evaluation paradigms, this study provides data-based support for the spatial quality enhancement of historic districts, thereby enabling the transformation of these areas from experience-oriented protection to data-driven intelligent renewal and promoting the sustainable development of cultural tourism. This study investigates the impact of heatwaves on the thermal comfort and well-being of elderly individuals living alone during heatwaves, focusing on two contrasting residential typologies in the Atlantic climate of Spain: a dense urban area and low-density peri-urban setting. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining in situ environmental monitoring, adaptive comfort modelling, and user-centred data from surveys and interviews based on the De Jong-Gierveld Loneliness Scale. The results show that both dwellings exceeded recommended indoor temperature thresholds during heatwaves, especially at night, contributing to sleep disturbance, cardiovascular stress, and emotional discomfort. Despite 85% of participants indicating that outdoor activities help them to mitigate not-wanted loneliness, architectural barriers often hinder such engagement. Over half reported having no balcony or terrace, which may have further intensified social isolation. Field data collected during 2022 summer heatwaves recorded maximum daytime temperatures of 30 °C and night-time peaks of 28.7 °C, exceeding the 25 °C threshold. The adaptive comfort evaluation classified both cases as Class 4 (severe discomfort). The urban dwelling showed consistent moderate discomfort (Category 3), likely due to poor ventilation and urban heat island effects. The peri-urban case, despite lacking the heat island influence, showed worse thermal conditions, especially during the day. Architectural barriers, poor thermal performance, and the lack of semi-outdoor spaces may exacerbate isolation among elderly people during extreme heat events. Full article

Geospatial Explainable AI Uncovers Eco-Environmental Effects and Its Driving Mechanisms—Evidence from the Poyang Lake Region, China

Intensified human activities and changes in land-use patterns have led to numerous eco-environmental challenges. A comprehensive understanding of the eco-environmental effects of land-use transitions and their driving mechanisms is essential for developing scientifically sound and sustainable environmental management strategies. However, existing studies often lack a comprehensive analysis of these mechanisms due to methodological limitations. This study investigates the eco-environmental effects of land-use transitions in the Poyang Lake Region over the past 30 years from the perspective of the production-living-ecological space (PLES) framework. Additionally, a geographically explainable artificial intelligence (GeoXAI) framework is introduced to further explore the mechanisms underlying these eco-environmental effects. The GeoXAI framework effectively addresses the challenges of integrating nonlinear relationships and spatial effects, which are often not adequately captured by traditional models. The results indicate that (1) the conversion of agricultural space to forest and lake spaces is the primary factor contributing to eco-environmental improvement. Conversely, the occupation of forest and lake spaces by agricultural and residential uses constitutes the main driver of eco-environmental degradation. (2) The GeoXAI demonstrated excellent performance by incorporating geographic variables to address the absence of spatial causality in traditional machine learning. (3) High-altitude and protected water areas are more sensitive to human activities. In contrast, geographic factors have a greater impact on densely populated urban areas. The results and methodology presented here can serve as a reference for eco-environmental assessment and decision-making in other areas facing similar land-use transformation challenges. Full article

The paper presents a novel approach to evaluating the fatigue performance of asphalt pavements using fuzzy set theory to model the uncertainty in the elastic moduli of asphalt layers. The method integrates fuzzy numbers with an analytical multilayer elastic pavement model. By applying α-cut representation and defuzzification techniques, the model delivers fuzzy estimations of critical strain responses and associated fatigue lives under traffic loading. The proposed methodology captures uncertainty in material properties more realistically than conventional deterministic approaches. The effectiveness of this technique is demonstrated through the Asphalt Institute’s fatigue models for tensile and compressive strains. The results provide fuzzy bounds for fatigue life parameters and enable robust pavement design under material uncertainty. By incorporating fuzzy-modulus-based parameters into layered elastic half-space models, the proposed method significantly improves the predictive reliability of pavement performance. Full article

Numerical Simulation of Thermal Cycling and Vibration Effects on Solder Layer Reliability in High-Power Diode Lasers for Space Applications

High-power laser diodes (HPLDs) are increasingly used in space applications, yet solder layer (SL) reliability critically limits their performance and lifespan. This study employs finite element analysis to evaluate SL failure mechanisms in microchannel-cooled HPLDs with two packaging configurations under thermal cycling and vibration. Based on the Anand constitutive model, contour plot analysis revealed that the critical stress–strain regions in both SLs were located at their edges. The stress–strain values along the X-axis of the SLs exceeded those in other axial directions, and SL failure would preferentially initiate from the edges along the cavity length direction. During random vibration analysis with excitation applied along the Z-axis, the equivalent stresses in both SLs exceeded X-/Y-axis levels. However, these values remained far below their yield strengths, indicating that only elastic strain and high-cycle fatigue occurred in the SLs. The calculated thermal fatigue lives of the two SLs were 2851 cycles and 5730 cycles, respectively. Their random vibration fatigue lives were determined as 5.75 × 107 h and 8.31 × 107 h. Using damage superposition under combined thermal-vibration loading, the total fatigue lives were predicted as 14,821 h and 29,786 h, respectively, with thermal cycling-induced damage dominating the failure mechanism.
