This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Cyclic triaxial tests are widely used in laboratory studies to assess the liquefaction susceptibility of soils. Although standardized procedures exist for conducting these tests, there is no universally accepted criterion for defining liquefaction. The choice of a liquefaction criterion significantly influences the interpretation of test results and subsequent engineering analyses. This study evaluates the impact of different liquefaction criteria by analyzing 42 cyclic triaxial tests performed on soil mixtures containing plastic fines. Both stress-based and strain-based liquefaction criteria were applied to assess their influence on test outcomes. The analyses focused on two key parameters: the number of loading cycles required to initiate liquefaction and the normalized dissipated energy per unit volume needed for liquefaction to occur. Results indicate that for soils susceptible to liquefaction failures, these parameters remain relatively consistent across different failure criteria. However, for soils prone to cyclic mobility failures, the number of loading cycles and the dissipated energy required for liquefaction vary significantly depending on the selected failure criterion. These findings highlight the importance of carefully selecting a liquefaction criterion, as it directly affects the assessment of soil behavior under cyclic loading. A better understanding of these variations can improve the accuracy of liquefaction susceptibility evaluations and inform geotechnical design and hazard mitigation strategies. Full article

Background/Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate clinical outcomes in patients with small pleomorphic adenoma (PA) after extracapsular dissection (ED) versus superficial parotidectomy (SP). Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review covering the years from 1950 to 2025 was conducted using the Pubmed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE and Embase databases. A single-arm meta-analysis was performed to evaluate intraoperative capsular rupture, recurrence, transient and permanent facial nerve palsy, Frey’s syndrome, salivary fistula, seroma and hematoma of patients who underwent ED vs. those who underwent SP, and funnel plots were constructed to evaluate the robustness of the findings. Results: Of the 1793 identified papers, 21 articles met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis (2507 patients) reported the following: (1) the risk of recurrence is similar in patients treated with ED and SP; (2) the transient facial nerve palsy rate is lower after ED (p < 0.05), while the permanent facial nerve palsy rate is similar with ED and SP; (3) post-operative complications, especially Frey’s syndrome (p < 0.05), are more common after SP. Conclusions: Given the similar recurrence rate and the lower morbidity compared to SP, ED could be considered the treatment of choice for pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland that are up to 3 cm in size, mobile and located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. Robotic search of people in human-centered environments, including healthcare settings, is challenging, as autonomous robots need to locate people without complete or any prior knowledge of their schedules, plans, or locations. Furthermore, robots need to be able to adapt to real-time events that can influence a person’s plan in an environment. In this paper, we present MLLM-Search, a novel zero-shot person search architecture that leverages multimodal large language models (MLLM) to address the mobile robot problem of searching for a person under event-driven scenarios with varying user schedules. Our approach introduces a novel visual prompting method to provide robots with spatial understanding of the environment by generating a spatially grounded waypoint map, representing navigable waypoints using a topological graph and regions by semantic labels. This is incorporated into an MLLM with a region planner that selects the next search region based on the semantic relevance to the search scenario and a waypoint planner that generates a search path by considering the semantically relevant objects and the local spatial context through our unique spatial chain-of-thought prompting approach. Extensive 3D photorealistic experiments were conducted to validate the performance of MLLM-Search in searching for a person with a changing schedule in different environments. An ablation study was also conducted to validate the main design choices of MLLM-Search. Furthermore, a comparison study with state-of-the-art search methods demonstrated that MLLM-Search outperforms existing methods with respect to search efficiency. Real-world experiments with a mobile robot in a multi-room floor of a building showed that MLLM-Search was able to generalize to new and unseen environments. Full article

The present paper investigates the application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the classification of diabetic foot ulcers, using VGG16, VGG19 and MobileNetV2 architectures. The primary objective is to develop and compare deep learning models capable of accurately identifying ulcerated regions in clinical images of diabetic feet, thereby aiding in the prevention and effective treatment of foot ulcers. A comprehensive study was conducted using an annotated dataset of medical images, evaluating the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score. VGG19 achieved the highest accuracy at 97%, demonstrating superior ability to focus activations on relevant lesion areas in complex images. MobileNetV2, while slightly less accurate, excelled in computational efficiency, making it a suitable choice for mobile devices and environments with hardware constraints. The study also highlights the limitations of each architecture, such as increased risk of overfitting in deeper models and the lower capability of MobileNetV2 to capture fine clinical details. These findings suggest that CNNs hold significant potential in computer-aided clinical diagnosis, particularly in the early and precise detection of diabetic foot ulcers, where timely intervention is crucial to prevent amputations. In the context of promoting sustainable mobility, walking and cycling have been widely recognized for their environmental and health benefits. However, a notable gap often exists between residents’ motivation to engage in these modes and their actual behavior. This study focuses on this motivation–behavior discrepancy and explores how heterogeneous information interventions—within the constraints of the existing built environment—can effectively influence residents’ travel psychology and behavior. Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory, this study aims to uncover the psychological mechanisms behind travel-mode choices and quantify the relative impacts of different types of information interventions. A travel survey was conducted in Yangzhou, China, collecting data from 1052 residents. Cluster analysis was performed using travel psychology data to categorize travel motivations and examine their alignment with actual travel behavior. A random forest model was then employed to assess the effects of individual attributes, travel characteristics, and information intervention attributes on the choice of walking and cycling. The results reveal a significant motivation–behavior gap: while 76% of surveyed residents expressed motivation to walk or cycle, only 30% actually adopted these modes. Based on this, further research shows that informational attributes exhibit a stronger effect in terms of promoting walking and cycling behavior compared to individual attributes and travel characteristics. Among these, health-related information demonstrates the maximum efficacy in areas with well-developed infrastructure. Specifically, health-related information has a greater impact on cycling (21.4%), while environmental information exerts a stronger influence on walking (7.31%). These findings suggest that leveraging information to promote walking and cycling should be more targeted. Full article

Face recognition technology is a biometric technology, which is based on the identification or verification of facial features. Automatic face recognition is an active research field in the context of computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) that is fundamental for a variety of real-time applications. In this research, the design and implementation of a face verification and identification system of a flexible, modular, secure, and scalable architecture is proposed. The proposed system incorporates several and various types of system components: (i) portable capabilities (mobile application and mixed reality [MR] glasses), (ii) enhanced monitoring and visualization via a user-friendly Web-based user interface (UI), and (iii) information sharing via middleware to other external systems. The experiments showed that such interconnected and complementary system components were able to perform robust and real-time results related to face identification and verification. Furthermore, to identify a proper model of high accuracy, robustness, and performance speed for face identification and verification tasks, a comprehensive evaluation of multiple face recognition pre-trained models (FaceNet, ArcFace, Dlib, and MobileNetV2) on a curated version of the ID vs. Spot dataset was performed. Among the models used, FaceNet emerged as a preferable choice for real-time tasks due to its balance between accuracy and inference speed for both face identification and verification tasks achieving AUC of 0.99, Rank-1 of 91.8%, Rank-5 of 95.8%, FNR of 2% and FAR of 0.1%, accuracy of 98.6%, and inference speed of 52 ms. This study develops a high-speed rail demand prediction model based on access probability, which quantifies the likelihood of passengers choosing a departure station among multiple alternatives. Traditional models assign demand to the nearest station or rely on manual calibration, often failing to reflect actual travel behavior and requiring excessive time and resources. To address these limitations, this study integrates survey data, real-world datasets, and machine learning techniques to model station choice behavior more accurately. Key influencing factors, including headway, access time, parking availability, and transit connections, were identified through passenger surveys and incorporated into the model. Machine learning algorithms improved prediction accuracy, with SHAP analysis providing interpretability. The proposed model achieved high accuracy, with an average error rate below 3% for major stations. Scenario analyses confirmed its applicability in network expansions, including GTX openings and the integration of mobility as a service. This model enhances data-driven decision-making for rail operators and offers insights for rail network planning and operations. Future research will focus on validating the model across diverse regions and refining it with updated datasets and external data sources. Full article

We present a lightweight autonomous driving method that uses a low-cost camera, a simple end-to-end convolutional neural network architecture, and smoother driving techniques to achieve energy-efficient vehicle control. Instead of directly constructing a mapping from raw sensory input to the action, our network takes the frame-to-frame visual difference as one of the crucial inputs to produce control commands, including the steering angle and the speed value at each time step. This choice of input allows highlighting the most relevant parts on raw image pairs to decrease the unnecessary visual complexity caused by different road and weather conditions. Additionally, our network achieves the prediction of the vehicle’s upcoming control commands by incorporating a view synthesis component into the model. The view synthesis, as an auxiliary task, aims to infer a novel view for the future from the historical environment transformation cue. By combining both the current and upcoming control commands, our framework achieves driving smoothness, which is highly associated with energy efficiency. We perform experiments on benchmarks to evaluate the reliability under different driving conditions in terms of control accuracy. We deploy a mobile robot outdoors to evaluate the power consumption of different control policies. The quantitative results demonstrate that our method can achieve energy efficiency in the real world. Full article

Promoting behavioral change in mobility is essential for sustainable urban development. This study evaluates the effectiveness of gamified challenges in fostering sustainable travel behaviors among high school students and teachers within the High School Challenge (HSC) 2024 campaign in Lecco, Italy. Over a 13-week period, participants tracked their commuting habits via gamified mobile application, Play&Go, that awarded points for sustainable mobility choices and introduced weekly challenges. Using behavioral (GPS-based tracking) and self-report data, we assessed the influence of challenge types, player characteristics (HEXAD Player Types, Big Five traits), and user experience evaluations on participation, retention, and behavior change. The results show that challenges, particularly those based on walking distances and framed as intra-team goals, significantly enhanced user engagement and contributed to improved mobility behaviors during participants’ free time. Compared to the 2023 edition without challenges, the 2024 campaign achieved better retention. HEXAD Player Types were more predictive of user appreciation than Personality Traits, though these effects were more evident in subjective evaluations than actual behavior. Overall, findings highlight the importance of tailoring gamified interventions to users’ motivational profiles and structuring challenges around SMART principles. This study contributes to the design of behaviorally informed, scalable solutions for sustainable mobility transitions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Manual therapy techniques, including mobilization and manipulation, are commonly used for chronic low back pain (CLBP), with clinical guidelines recommending their use. This study aimed to compare the immediate hypoalgesic effects of mobilization and manipulation in patients with non-specific CLBP, evaluating their impact on pain sensitivity and range of motion. Methods: A cross-over randomized controlled trial was conducted with 27 participants with non-specific CLBP. Participants received either mobilization or manipulation on two different intervention days. Outcome measures included pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) assessed with a digital algometer, pain intensity using a numeric rating scale, and lumbar range of motion (ROM) measured with a digital inclinometer. Results: The results indicated no statistically significant differences between mobilization and manipulation for any outcome measures (all p > 0.05). However, significant within-intervention improvements were observed, including pain reduction, increased PPTs, and enhanced ROM of the lower back. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both mobilization and manipulation provide similar immediate benefits for patients with CLBP. The choice between these techniques should be based on therapists’ clinical reasoning and individualized risk stratification, considering the potential benefits and risks of each approach for a specific patient. Beef fat injection technology, used to enhance the perceived quality of lower-grade meat, often results in artificially marbled beef that mimics the visual traits of Wagyu, characterized by dense fat distribution. This practice, driven by the high cost of Wagyu and the affordability of fat-injected beef, has led to the proliferation of mislabeled “Wagyu-grade” products sold at premium prices, posing potential food safety risks such as allergen exposure or consumption of unverified additives, which can adversely affect consumer health. Addressing this, this study introduces a smart sensing system integrated with handheld mobile devices, enabling consumers to capture beef images during purchase for real-time health-focused assessment. The system analyzes surface texture and color, transmitting data to a server for classification to determine if the beef is artificially marbled, thus supporting informed dietary choices and reducing health risks. Images are processed by applying a region of interest (ROI) mask to remove background noise, followed by partitioning into grid blocks. Local binary pattern (LBP) texture features and RGB color features are extracted from these blocks to characterize surface properties of three beef types (Wagyu, regular, and fat-injected). A support vector machine (SVM) model classifies the blocks, with the final image classification determined via majority voting. Experimental results reveal that the system achieves a recall rate of 95.00% for fat-injected beef, a misjudgment rate of 1.67% for non-fat-injected beef, a correct classification rate (CR) of 93.89%, and an F1-score of 95.80%, demonstrating its potential as a human-centered healthcare tool for ensuring food safety and transparency. Background/Objectives: Mobile healthcare units (MHUs) comprise flexible, ambulatory healthcare teams that deliver community care services, particularly in underserved or remote areas. In Greece, MHUs were pivotal in epidemiological surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and are now evolving into a sustainable and integrated service for much-needed community-based healthcare. To support this expanded role, targeted, competency-based training is essential; however, this can pose challenges, especially in coordinating synchronous learning across geographically dispersed teams and in ensuring engagement using an online format. Methods: A nationwide, online training program was developed to improve the knowledge of the personnel members of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization’s MHUs. This program was structured focusing on four core themes: (i) prevention–health promotion; (ii) provision of care; (iii) social welfare and solidarity initiatives; and (iv) digital health skill enhancement. The program was implemented by the University of Crete’s Center for Training and Lifelong Learning from 16 January to 24 February 2025. A multidisciplinary team of 64 experts delivered 250 h of live and on-demand educational content, including health screenings, vaccination protocols, biomarker monitoring, chronic disease management, treatment adherence, organ donation awareness, counseling on social violence, and eHealth applications. Knowledge acquisition was assessed through a pre- and post-training multiple-choice test related to the core themes. Trainees’ and trainers’ qualitative feedback was evaluated using a 0–10 numerical rating scale (Likert-type). Results: A total of 873 MHU members participated in the study, including both healthcare professionals and administrative staff. The attendance rate was consistently above 90% on a daily basis. The average assessment score increased from 52.8% (pre-training) to 69.8% (post-training), indicating 17% knowledge acquisition. The paired t-test analysis demonstrated that this improvement was statistically significant (t = −8.52, p < 0.001), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing knowledge. As part of the evaluation of qualitative feedback, the program was positively evaluated, with 75–80% of trainees rating key components such as content, structure, and trainer effectiveness as “Very Good” or “Excellent.” In addition, using a 0–10 scale, trainers rated the program relative to organization (9.4/10), content (8.8), and trainee engagement (8.9), confirming the program’s strength and scalability in primary care education. Conclusions: This initiative highlights the effectiveness of a structured, online training program in enhancing MHU knowledge, ensuring standardized, high-quality education that supports current primary healthcare needs. Future studies evaluating whether the increase in knowledge acquisition may also result in an improvement in the personnel’s competencies, and clinical practice will further contribute to assessing whether additional training programs may be helpful. Ride-pooling (RP) services, in which passengers with similar destinations share a ride, offer considerable potential for enhancing urban mobility by bridging gaps in public transportation (PT) networks and providing a convenient alternative to private car use. For the effective design and operation of such services, a detailed understanding of user preferences and usage patterns is essential. This study investigates differences in RP preferences and usage between day and night (with nighttime defined as 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.), drawing on both a stated choice experiment (SCE) and revealed preference data collected in Mannheim, Germany. The focus lies on the local RP service fips, which is integrated into the PT system. The SCE, conducted in 2024 with 566 participants, was analyzed using a nested logit model. The analysis of the SCE reveals that nighttime preferences for RP are characterized by reduced sensitivity to travel time and cost, creating an opportunity for RP operators to optimize stop network designs during nighttime hours by increasing pooling rates. In addition, it indicates a greater likelihood of private car usage at night, especially among women, likely due to safety concerns and limited PT availability. The analysis of revealed preference data provides a complementary perspective. It shows that the RP nighttime service primarily attracts younger users, while many respondents report not being active on weekend nights. However, the combination of low public awareness and limited service availability, evidenced by rejected booking requests, suggests that existing demand is not being fully captured. This implies that low usage is not merely the result of low demand, but also of structural barriers on both the supply and information side. Overcoming these barriers through targeted information campaigns and expansion of nighttime service capacity could substantially enhance sustainable urban travel options during nighttime. Aviation security increasingly relies on explosive trace detectors (ETDs), particularly those employing ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). However, few studies have systematically compared the performance of IMS-based ETDs, especially in terms of measurement uncertainty and stability under repeated operation. This study evaluated two commercially available IMS-based ETDs using statistical analysis and data visualization. Repeated TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) detection tests were conducted to assess performance over consecutive operations. The results revealed significant differences in measurement uncertainty between the two devices. One ETD exhibited stable measurements throughout, while the other showed variance fluctuations that stabilized only after extended use. Despite using the same detection principle, the two devices responded differently to operational conditions, suggesting that internal specifications and design choices significantly affect reliability. This study offers a methodological framework for ETD comparison and provides insights to support more rigorous evaluation and certification practices in aviation security. Full article
