This paper explores the value of imperfections and curated decay in the conservation of architecture and public art as vehicles of cultural memory. While conventional heritage practice treats physical degradation as a threat, newer conservation ethics argue for embracing material impermanence within an aesthetics of care. We examine how acknowledging patina, weathering, and even structural decline can become an act of care, maintaining the “spirit” and authenticity of a place. The theoretical framework integrated the aesthetics of imperfection, including concepts like the Japanese wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in the incomplete and impermanent, critical heritage theory (which questions whose memories and values are preserved or excluded) and cultural memory studies (notably Nora’s notion of lieux de mémoire, where material sites become symbolic elements of communal memory). Methodologically, the article is grounded by two case-study video essays, Imperfections (Genoa) and Scars (Nicosia), as instruments of research, which provide visual analyses of decayed architectural environments. These examples illustrate how curated decay can transform abandoned buildings and war-scarred urban zones into powerful mnemonic devices, provoking reflection on history, identity and the ethics of preservation. Despite extensive theorisation of patina/age-value and curated decay, recent heritage debates offer limited operational criteria for distinguishing intentional curated decay from unmanaged neglect in lived urban conservation contexts. Drawing on ethics and aesthetics of care, this article asks if and how care can be operationalised into a decision framework for urban conservation and tests this framework through two selected buildings: Albergo dei Poveri (Genoa) and Home for Cooperation (Nicosia). The authors argue that caring for heritage does not always mean restoring it to an as-new state; curating ageing and traces of time can support remembrance, resilience, and reconciliation, enriching heritage’s role in future urban imaginaries. Decision-making relies on coordinated neural dynamics that integrate sensory evidence with top-down control. In this EEG study, we examined sensor (scalp)-level theta and alpha-band oscillations, as well as fronto-parietal network connectivity, during a tactile spatial discrimination task. Blindfolded participants judged the lateral offset of the central dot in a three-dot array delivered to the right index finger while an EEG was recorded. Time–frequency analyses revealed that both theta and alpha power were greater for correct than incorrect decision trials during pre-stimulus and post-stimulus intervals, suggesting enhanced preparatory and mnemonic engagement during accurate decisions. Directional connectivity assessed using block (multivariate) Granger causality demonstrated significantly stronger frontal-to-parietal influence in the theta band during both pre- and post-stimulus periods for correct decisions, supporting the role of long-range theta communication for top-down control in guiding tactile judgment. These findings highlight theta-band fronto-parietal communication as a key mechanism supporting successful tactile decision-making. Full article

Medical education requires learners to integrate complex basic science knowledge with clinical reasoning, with endocrinology posing particular challenges due to nonlinear feedback and system-level interactions. Although serious games may enhance learning, many implementations are individual/solitary, and evidence for analog serious trading card games is limited. This study evaluated a mnemonic-driven Medimon Learning Card Game (LCG) designed to support systems-based endocrine education. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with first-year medical students during an endocrine course block. All students received identical instruction, while a subset participated in a guided, competitive Medimon LCG session. Achievement was assessed using a pretest and a delayed posttest administered two weeks after the intervention, along with course examination performance. Engagement was measured using the Situational Interest Survey for Multimedia (SIS-M) and open-ended responses. Students who participated in the Medimon LCG demonstrated significantly greater delayed learning gains than controls, while course examination performance did not differ between groups. SIS-M results indicated high levels of interest and perceived value, and qualitative findings highlighted affective engagement, cognitive reinforcement, and social interaction. These findings suggest that an analog serious trading card game can enhance engagement and support longer-term retention of complex endocrine concepts, offering a transferable framework for socially mediated game-based learning in medical education. Anticoagulant pharmacology is a cognitively demanding domain in undergraduate medical education, with persistent challenges in learner engagement, retention, and safe clinical application. Cinematic Clinical Narratives (CCNs) offer a theory-informed multimedia approach designed to support learning through narrative structure, visual mnemonics, and affective engagement. We conducted a multi-site quasi-experimental study within a six-week Cancer, Hormones, and Blood course across a distributed medical education program. First-year medical students received either a traditional case-based lecture or an animated CCN (Twilight: Breaking Clots) during a one-hour anticoagulant pharmacology session. Learning outcomes were assessed using pre- and posttests, learner engagement was measured with the Situational Interest Survey for Multimedia (SIS-M), and exploratory eye tracking with second-year medical students was used to assess visual attention to embedded mnemonics. Both instructional groups demonstrated significant learning gains, with fold-change analyses indicating greater relative improvement among students exposed to the CCN. The animated CCN elicited significantly higher triggered situational interest compared with non-animated cases (p = 0.019), while also being preferred by the majority of participants. Qualitative analysis revealed that learners perceived CCNs as particularly effective for initial encoding and memorization, while non-animated cases supported subsequent clinical application. Eye-tracking data demonstrated high visual uptake and sustained attention to key mnemonic elements. Together, these findings support expert-designed, genAI-assisted CCNs as a validated and complementary instructional approach in medical education. Full article

Background/Objectives: Mindfulness is a meditative practice that increases levels of awareness and attention. Introducing this practice into the curricula of nursing students could improve the relationship with patients and promote students’ well-being. This scoping review aims to map the literature on mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) administered to nursing students to promote their psychological well-being. Methods: The review was conducted according to Peters’ framework. PCC eligibility criteria were used. The PCC mnemonic stands for Population (nursing students), Concept (mindfulness-based interventions applied with positive and negative outcomes for psychological well-being), and Context (undergraduate, pre-licensure). The search was conducted in March 2024 by consulting PubMed, ERIC (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (Ovid), and ProQuest databases. Additional sources have been identified from Google Scholar. Results: Of the 763 articles that emerged, 55 were included in the scoping review. The interventions depicted are heterogeneous in terms of content and timing. The most investigated outcomes remain stress and anxiety; self-efficacy and empathy emerge as positive indicators of psychological well-being. In the post-COVID period, there is an increase in the online delivery method. Conclusions: In order to provide guidance for practice and institutional policies, future research could focus on a systematic review that identifies the most appropriate MBIs for the well-being of nursing students. In addition, it would be useful to conduct feasibility studies to introduce structured mindfulness-based practices into the nursing degree programmes, with standardized and adaptable pathways tailored to the needs of different academic realities. Effective communication in critical care units, such as the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), is vital for patient safety; however, clinical notes from multiple professionals are often lengthy and complex. This study evaluated the Mistral large language model for summarizing Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit progress notes using the Illness severity, Patient summary, Action list, Situation awareness and contingency planning, and Synthesis by receiver (I-PASS) framework, a standardized mnemonic for patient handoffs in healthcare. A total of 385 patients were included in the cohort, and all the progress notes associated with each patient were combined into a single document and summarized by the model. The readability was assessed using multiple metrics, including Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning-Fog Index, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook Index (SMOG), Automated Readability Index, and Dale-Chall Score. The readability metrics showed that the summaries generated with the Mistral Large Language Model (LLM) were much more difficult to read than the original notes, requiring a higher reading level. In a small clinician review, junior residents rated the summaries overall more favorably than senior residents, who often identified missing clinical details. Although Mistral condensed the documentation, this reduced readability and some loss of context may limit its usefulness for clinical handoffs. As a preliminary study with a small clinician-reviewed sample, these findings are descriptive and will require validation in larger clinical settings. Full article

Today, literacy is defined much more broadly, i.e., as the enabling ability to recognize, understand, interpret, create, and use various written materials in different contexts. Creative writing skills are developed in primary school, but it is difficult for students to express their thoughts in writing. This article presents how personalized creative writing prompts can help primary school students with different abilities improve their Lithuanian & General P narrative writing skills. Third-grade students (N = 14) from a private school in a large city participated in the study. An action research approach was applied, preceded by a diagnostic assessment of students’ creative writing skills, during which the essays were written without the aid of prompts. The experiences of each student were also described, as the children composed written narratives using prompts. After analysing the students’ work, progress was noted in all areas of text creation: from the use of vivid language elements in writing, the use of connecting words in sentences, to corrected spelling and punctuation errors. This article examines memory and monuments in the science fiction Star Trek franchise as a lens for understanding commemoration technologies and how futuristic visions of memorials anticipated real ones, especially during times of conflict. To understand the cultural reciprocity of sci-fi television and contemporary commemoration of war and trauma, we investigate the interactive website produced by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, Kan, titled Kan 7.10.360, which commemorates the victims of the 7 October 2023 Hamas massacre of civilians, soldiers, and policemen in Israel’s Gaza Envelope region. The 7.10.360 website employs advanced technologies to create what we identify as a digital “counter-monument.” By applying the concept of metamemorial science fiction relating to the Shoah, investigating its victims’ commemoration and examining the globital turn in memory work, we demonstrate that the Kan project realizes digital mnemonic practices engaged in Star Trek. We argue that the renowned series performs and anticipates three aspects of globital memory work and novel digital commemoration, also prevalent in the Kan 7.10.360 website: the personalization of memory using images; televisual testimony or documentation that mediates personal experience; and the display of objects that symbolize quotidian aspects of the victims’ lives. Memory constitutes a fundamental cognitive domain, and converging evidence suggests that its dysfunction represents a prominent, though not exclusive, transdiagnostic dimension across major psychiatric disorders. This review aimed to integrate neurobiological, cognitive, and clinical evidence on domain-specific memory impairments in mood, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive, post-traumatic stress, and psychotic disorders. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to November 2025 for peer-reviewed studies examining short-term, working, long-term, episodic, semantic, and prospective memory, prioritizing both landmark and recent contributions. Two recurrent transdiagnostic patterns emerged: (i) consistent impairments in working-memory control, and (ii) reduced episodic/autobiographical specificity, while procedural memory appeared relatively preserved. Disorder-specific profiles include overgeneral autobiographical memory in major depression, enduring working and episodic deficits in bipolar disorder, variable impairments in anxiety disorders, functional rather than structural memory inefficiencies in obsessive–compulsive disorder, broad mnemonic disorganization in post-traumatic stress disorder, and pervasive working and episodic deficits in schizophrenia and related psychoses. Across conditions, converging neurobiological data implicate fronto-hippocampal dysconnectivity, altered plasticity, and impaired consolidation processes. Unlike previous reviews, this work syntetisizes evidence across multiple memory systems and across major psychiatric categories, linking neurobiological mechanisms with cognitive and clinical manifestations to support a dimensional, transdiagnostic interpretation of memory dysfunction. These findings could suggest that memory dysfunction represents a recurrent and clinically relevant dimension across psychiatric conditions, warranting further mechanistic and longitudinal investigation. The Nazi genocide had devastating consequences for Norwegian Jews and Romas. However, their experiences and memories have been treated very differently in Norway with respect to official recognition and public attention. This article investigates the mnemonic marginalization of the Roma and the persistent gap between the historical recognition of Roma persecution and its representational absence in national narratives of war and victimhood. It suggests that continued exclusion of the small Roma minority from national identity narratives in Norway results not only from temporal, topographical and narrative characteristics of their memories, but also from discursive connections of negative stereotypes that discredits them as blameworthy victims and results in testimonial injustice. Moreover, it explores the challenges of representing Roma memories without reproducing stigmatizing cultural tropes. The article suggests empathic mnemonic counter-narratives as a strategy for countering dominant framings of the Roma as “the others” and for promoting a more inclusive and self-reflexive politics of remembrance. Background: Studies have shown that input comparison in the hippocampus between the Schaffer collateral (SC) input in apical dendrites and the perforant path (PP) input in the apical tufts dramatically changes the activity of pyramidal cells (PCs). Equally, dendritic inhibition was shown to control PC activity by minimizing the depolarizing signals in their dendritic trees, controlling the synaptic integration time window, and ensuring temporal firing precision. Objectives: We computationally investigated the diverse roles of inhibitory synapses on the PC dendritic arbors of a CA1 microcircuit model in mnemonic retrieval during the co-occurrence of SC and PP inputs. Results: Our study showed inhibition in the apical PC dendrites mediated thresholding of firing during memory retrieval by restricting the depolarizing signals in the dendrites of non-engram cells, thus preventing them from firing, and ensuring perfect memory retrieval (only engram cells fire). On the other hand, inhibition in the apical dendritic tuft removed interference from spurious EC during recall. When EC drove only the engram cells of the SC input cue, recall was perfect under all conditions. Removal of apical tuft inhibition had no effect on recall quality. When EC drove 40% of engram cells and 60% of non-engram cells of the SC input cue, recall was disrupted, and this disruption was worse when the apical tuft inhibition was removed. When EC drove only the non-engram cells of the cue, then recall was perfect again but only when the population of engram cells was small. Removal of the apical tuft inhibition disrupted recall performance when the population of engram cells was large. Conclusions: Our study deciphers the diverse roles of dendritic inhibition in mnemonic processing in the CA1 microcircuit of the rat hippocampus. Full article

Acid-base analysis is a high-load diagnostic skill that many medical students struggle to master when taught using traditional text-based flowcharts. This multi-institution mixed-methods study evaluated a novel visual mnemonic algorithm that integrated Medimon characters, symbolic imagery, and pop-culture references into the standard acid-base diagnostic framework. First-year medical students (n = 273) at six distributed WWAMI campuses attended an identical lecture on acid-base physiology. Students at five control campuses received the original text-based algorithm, while students at one experimental campus received the Medimon algorithm in addition. Achievement was measured with a unit exam (nine focal items, day 7) and a final exam (four focal items, day 11). A Differences-in-Differences approach compared performance on focal items versus baseline items across sites. Students at the experimental campus showed no significant advantage on the unit exam (DiD = +1.2%, g = 0.12) but demonstrated a larger, but still non-significant, medium-to-large effect on the final exam (DiD = +11.0%, g = 0.85). At the experimental site, 39 students completed the Situational Interest Survey for Multimedia (SIS-M), revealing significantly higher triggered, maintained-feeling, maintained-value, and overall situational interest scores for the Medimon algorithm (all p < 0.001). Thematic analysis of open-ended responses identified four themes: enhanced clarity, improved memorability, increased engagement, and barriers to interpretation. Collectively, the findings suggest that embedding visual mnemonics and serious-game characters into diagnostic algorithms can enhance learner interest and may improve long-term retention in preclinical medical education. Methods: This is a scoping review protocol developed according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, as recommended by the EQUATOR Network. The research question was structured using the PCC mnemonic (Population, Concept, and Context): What are the clinical and administrative activities performed by nurses in nuclear medicine services? A comprehensive search will be conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus, and CINAHL, complemented by grey literature sources such as Google Scholar and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. No restrictions on language or publication date will be applied. Study selection and data extraction will be performed independently by two reviewers. This protocol is registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF) and is publicly accessible. The selection process will be detailed in a PRISMA-ScR flow diagram. A descriptive table will summarize the characteristics of the included studies, including the authors, year, country, study type, objectives, population, main nursing activities, and key findings. Expected Outcomes: The anticipated results are expected to clarify nurses’ contributions to patient safety and service quality in nuclear medicine. Conclusions: This review may also support the development of an assessment tool for nursing activities, guide professional training, and inform policies to strengthen nursing practice in this specialized field. Recent years have seen the growth of hydrologic and hydraulic models operating at varying spatial resolutions at regional scales, which emphasizes the need for consistent naming methodologies to enhance model interoperability and integration across domains, sub-models, and modeling frameworks. This paper introduces HRI-HydroName, a high-resolution, interoperable, and human-friendly model naming system designed to complement the Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) watershed naming convention and support high spatial resolution model development and interoperability. HRI-HydroName assigns hierarchical codes, beginning with a watershed mnemonic, to stream segments, control structures, and model components, yielding unique, yet readable, identifiers that embed basin and network context. This systematic framework addresses software identifier constraints while ensuring each name clearly indicates its watershed and connectivity, facilitating the seamless merging of sub-models into larger integrated models without naming conflicts. The paper demonstrates a proof-of-concept application of HRI-HydroName to an HUC8-scale model of the Amite River Basin (LA); this illustrative example generates consistent names for elements and highlights interoperability. HRI-HydroName improves model clarity, reproducibility, and composability by providing standardized, interpretable identifiers, thereby supporting efficient multi-model integration in regional flood modeling. The paper discusses implementation challenges and suggests solutions for software utilities to support streamlined adoption and usability by different stakeholders. Full article

This article examines the entangled relationship between hagiographic memory, liturgical space, and sacred landscape in the rock-cut monastic settlements of Cappadocia. Drawing on archeological, iconographic, and acoustic analyses, this article argues that the morphology of these sanctuaries—shaped by volcanic tuff and carved over centuries—was not only functional but performed a theological and mnemonic function. The spatial arrangement of apses, naves, and funerary chambers encoded rituals and commemorative acts, while painted iconographies mediated doctrinal meaning and cosmic orientation. Furthermore, this study situates Cappadocia within broader traditions of monastic hagiography, tracing how carved architecture preserved saintly narratives, communal memory, and devotional performance. By engaging with recent debates in heritage theory, the article also contends that these monastic landscapes continue to act as living archives, sustaining religious and cultural identities beyond their historical moment. The study thus contributes to emerging interdisciplinary discussions on sacred space, material devotion, and the performativity of memory in medieval Christian monasticism. Full article
