Aircraft engine endoscope probes often face difficulties in effectively detecting internal structures in high-temperature environments. In order to improve the thermal protection characteristics of endoscope probes, this paper designs a probe-cooling structure with a circular ring pressure drop structure and calculates and analyzes the cooling effect of the probe under different gas cooling conditions. Study the influence of size parameters and cooling medium properties of the structure on the cooling characteristics of the probe, analyze the temperature distribution of the probe mirror, cooling efficiency distribution, and cold flow outlet flow distribution. The results show that the larger the outlet width of the annular cooling structure, the better the cooling effect, and the optimal cooling effect structure is 0.7 mm; the larger the opening angle, the lower and then the higher the temperature of the endoscope probe surface, and the best cooling effect occurs when the optimal angle is 40°; the larger the proportion of mixed liquid nitrogen, the lower the temperature of the probe mirror surface. A 5% proportion of mixed liquid nitrogen can reduce the temperature of the probe mirror surface by about 11 K. Full article

This study investigates the fabrication of a Cu-Mn-Al alloy coating on 27SiMn steel using Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) technology with an innovative Ar-B(OCH3)3 mixed shielding gas, focusing on the effect of the gas flow rate (5–20 L/min). The addition of B(OCH3)3 was found to significantly enhance process stability by improving molten pool wettability, resulting in a wider cladding layer (6.565 mm) and smaller wetting angles compared to pure Ar. Macro-morphology analysis identified 10 L/min as the optimal flow rate for achieving a uniform and defect-free coating, while deviations led to oxidation (at low flow) or spatter and turbulence (at high flow). Microstructural characterization revealed that the flow rate critically governs phase evolution, with the primary κI phase transforming from dendritic/granular to petal-like/rod-like morphologies. At higher flow rates (≥15 L/min), increased stirring promoted Fe dilution from the substrate, leading to the formation of Fe-rich intermetallic compounds and distinct spherical Fe phases. Consequently, the cladding layer obtained at 10 L/min exhibited balanced and superior properties, achieving a maximum shear strength of 303.22 MPa and optimal corrosion resistance with a minimum corrosion rate of 0.02935 mm/y. All shear fractures occurred within the cladding layer, demonstrating superior interfacial bonding strength and ductile fracture characteristics. This work provides a systematic guideline for optimizing shielding gas parameters in the CMT cladding of high-performance Cu-Mn-Al alloy coatings. Full article

The long-standing need for a modern public transportation system in Lebanon, a developing country of the Middle East with an almost exclusive dependence on costly and polluting passenger cars, has become more pressing in recent years due to the worsening economic crisis and the onset of hyperinflation. This study investigates the potential reductions in energy use, emissions, and costs from the possible introduction of natural gas, hybrid, and battery-electric buses compared to traditional diesel buses in local real driving conditions. Four operating conditions were considered including severe congestion, peak, off-peak, and bus rapid transit (BRT) operation. Battery-electric buses are found to be the best performers in any traffic operation, conditional on having clean energy supply at the power plant and significant subsidy of bus purchase cost. Natural gas buses do not provide significant greenhouse gas emission savings compared to diesel buses but offer substantial reductions in the emission of all major pollutants harmful to human health. Results also show that accounting for additional energy consumption from the use of climate-control auxiliaries in hot and cold weather can significantly impact the performance of all bus technologies by up to 44.7% for electric buses on average. Performance of all considered bus technologies improves considerably in free-flowing traffic conditions, making BRT operation the most beneficial. A vehicle mix of diesel, natural gas, and hybrid bus technologies is found most feasible for the case of Lebanon and similar developing countries lacking necessary infrastructure for a near-term transition to battery-electric technology. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the combined effects of sports massage, blood flow restriction (BFR), and cold therapy on quadriceps recovery in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes following eccentric exercise, focusing on muscle biomechanical properties, pain, and strength. Methods: This randomized, single-blind clinical trial involved 36 men and women MMA-trained participants, divided into three groups: massage (n = 12) received massage, BFR/cool (n = 12) received combined BFR and cooling, and control (n = 12) received passive rest as a control. The fatigue protocol involved MMA fighters performing five sets of plyometric jumps on a 50 cm box until exhaustion, with 1-min breaks between sets. After that, the massage group received a 20-min massage overall using standardized techniques; BFR/cool underwent a 20-min alternating blood flow restriction (200 mmHg) and cooling treatment with ice bags on the quadriceps; and the final group served as the control group with passive rest and no intervention. Participants were assessed four times—before exercise, immediately after exercise, 24 h post-exercise (after two recovery sessions), and 48 h post-exercise (after four recovery sessions)—for perfusion unit (PU), muscle elasticity, pressure pain threshold (PPT), reactive strength index (RSI), and total quality recovery (TQR). Results: The statistical analysis revealed significant effects of both massage and BFR/cooling interventions across key recovery outcomes, with large effect sizes for time-related changes in RSI (p < 0.0001; η2 = 0.87), elasticity (p < 0.0001; η2 = 0.84), and PPT (p < 0.0001; η2 = 0.66). Notably, post-exercise 48 h values for RSI, elasticity, PU, and TQR were significantly improved in both the massage and BFR/cool groups compared to control (p < 0.05)), while no significant group differences were observed for PPT. Conclusions: The study concludes that both massage and combined blood flow restriction with cooling interventions significantly enhance post-exercise recovery—improving muscle perfusion, elasticity, reactive strength, and perceived recovery—compared to passive rest. In this study, through RH water model simulation experiments, the effects of precipitation bubbles on the two-phase flow pattern, liquid steel flow behavior, and flow characteristics in an RH reactor during the whole decarburization process were comparatively investigated and analyzed by using quasi-counts that reflected the similarity of the precipitation bubble phenomenon. The experimental results show that an increase in precipitation bubbles is positively related to an increase in circulating flow rate, a reduction in mixing time, and an increase in gas content and negatively related to the residence time of liquid steel in the vacuum chamber. The two-phase flow pattern of the rising tube under the influence of precipitation bubbles includes bubble flow, slug flow, mixing flow, and churn flow. Under the influence of precipitation bubbles, the liquid surface spattering inside the vacuum chamber is reduced, the fluctuation amplitude is reduced, the efficiency of liquid steel processing is improved, it is not easy for cold steel to form, and the fluctuation frequency is increased, which is conducive to increasing the surface area of the vacuum chamber; the bubbles’ rising, aggregating, and crushing behavior increases the stirring effect inside the vacuum chamber, which is conducive to improving the decarburization and mass transfer rate. Under the influence of the precipitated bubbles, the concentration gradient between the ladle and the vacuum chamber is increased, which accelerates the mixing speed of the liquid steel in the ladle, and the volume of the dead zone is reduced by 50%. The lifting gas flow rate can be appropriately reduced in the plant. Full article

Coaxial downhole heat exchangers (CDHEs) extract heat directly from geothermal reservoirs through a closed loop, minimizing environmental impacts. However, the heat extraction efficiency is generally lower than that of groundwater harvesting technology. This study proposes integrating spiral fins on the CDHE outer tube’s inner surface to enhance heat transfer performance. Numerical simulations demonstrate that placing spiral fins on the inner wall of the outer tube significantly enhances rotational velocity and turbulence within the annular flow channel, outperforming configurations with fins on the outer wall of the inner tube. The intensified swirling flow extends to the bottom of the CDHE, promoting effective mixing of hot and cold fluids and consequently improving the heat transfer coefficient. This study also investigates the influence of fin pitch and height on heat transfer and flow characteristics. The results show that both the Nusselt number (Nu) and flow resistance increase as fin pitch decreases, causing the performance evaluation criteria (PEC) to initially increase and then decrease. Additionally, increased fin height enhances the heat transfer coefficient, but also leads to a greater pressure drop. The optimal performance was achieved with a fin pitch of 500 mm and a fin height of 10 mm, attaining a maximum PEC of 1.53, effectively balancing heat transfer enhancement and hydraulic resistance. These findings provide guidance for the structural optimization of coaxial downhole heat exchangers. Full article

Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), as a key basic chemical raw material, has an irreplaceable position in strategic emerging industries involving high-end materials, electronics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Currently, TFE is industrially produced via the vapor cracking of difluoromonochloromethane (R22). However, there is a gap between China and the developed countries in the high-end tetrafluoroethylene monomer, the purity of tetrafluoroethylene monomer is difficult to reach the high purity requirement of 99.999%, and the content of the key impurities that determine the nature of the functional materials is high, which leads to a series of problems of instability in the performance of the high-end and special products and high media loss. To enhance the purity of TFE monomers produced by the pyrolysis reactor of R22 and water vapor, the fluid dynamics simulations of the reactor model were conducted using Ansys Fluent. The reactor model was initially constructed using Space Claim, followed by mesh generation with Fluent Meshing and other relevant configurations. Both cold-state and thermal-state simulations were performed. The cold-state simulation analyzed the effects of temperature, flow velocity, and turbulence models on the turbulent gas flow and mixing processes within the reactor model. The thermal-state simulation examined the impacts of reaction process variations on internal temperature, turbulence, component distribution, and outlet component concentrations during the actual reaction process. Finally, the inlet flow rate and structure of the reactor were optimized. The results indicated that the optimal inlet flow rates for R22 and water vapor were 0.2–0.3 kg/s and 0.4–0.5 kg/s, respectively. In practical production, the internal fluid mixing achieved an optimal value after modifying the inlet structure to a T shape. This study provides new insights into the pyrolysis reaction and lays the foundation for further improving the purity of TFE monomers. Full article

Existing research shows that using waterborne epoxy resin (WER) instead of emulsified asphalt as the binder for cold mix asphalt (CMA) can enhance the rutting resistance, high-temperature performance, fracture performance, and early performance of CMA. In order to eliminate the potential drawbacks such as insufficient strength and low-temperature performance of CMA during application, a novel method was proposed in this study for the preparation of waterborne epoxy-acrylate resin (WER), specifically tailored to modify emulsified asphalt, resulting in waterborne epoxy-acrylate resin emulsified asphalt (WEREA). The modification effect of WER on emulsified asphalt was evaluated through rheological tests and direct tensile tests. A modified design method based on the conventional Marshall design method was proposed to determine the optimal mix proportions, including the key parameters of specimen compaction and curing. The results revealed that the incorporation of WER led to a substantial improvement in the complex shear modulus and a concurrent decrease in the phase angle. When the temperature exceeded 60 °C, the phase angle exhibited a diminishing trend, indicative of a reduced viscosity as temperatures escalated. As the WER content increased, a decrease in the direct tensile strain rate was observed, accompanied by a substantial elevation in direct tensile strength. At various stress levels, the shear strain of WEREA decreases with increased content of WER, indicating that the incorporation of WER can enhance the hardness of emulsified asphalt and improve its deformation resistance. The results from MSCR tests indicate that WER could significantly improve the elasticity and hardness of emulsified asphalt, transitioning it from a viscoelastic material to an elastic material, thereby improving its deformation resistance, resistance to rutting, and high-temperature performance. The results of fatigue life are consistent with those of the amplitude sweep, both reflecting the improvement of resistance to deformation of emulsified asphalt by WER. This indicates that WER has a significant improving effect on the fatigue resistance of emulsified asphalt. Furthermore, the Marshall design tests further confirmed the advantages of WEREA in asphalt mixtures. The optimal preparation for the WEREA mixture was proposed as follows: double-sided compaction for 50 times each, aging at 60 °C for 48 h, optimal moisture content of 5.14%, cement content of 2.5%, and emulsion content of 8.4%. The optimal mix proportions identified through these tests yielded asphalt mixtures with significantly improved stability, reduced flow value, and enhanced rutting resistance compared to the hot-mix asphalt mixture (HMA) of AC-16. These findings suggest that WEREA has the potential to significantly enhance the durability and longevity of asphalt pavements. For future applications, it can be explored for use in producing cold recycled asphalt mixtures. In addition to designing the WEREA mixture according to AC-16 gradation, consideration can also be given to using a gradation with a smaller nominal maximum aggregate size for the application in the surface layer or ultra-thin wearing course. A multidisciplinary study, involving hydrogeological, geochemical, and mineralogical analyses, was conducted to define the evolution of thermal mineral springs in the Sabatini Volcanic District (SVD) (Central Italy) in a historic period. The outcomes were integrated with the archeological findings to improve the knowledge of the evolution of Veii, a settlement established since the Iron Age and later expanded by Etruscans and Romans. During the archeological excavations, water-related buildings were identified, especially at the Campetti Southwest site in the Veii settlement. Votive inscriptions also suggest the presence of buildings linked to sacred waters, even if a clear definition of the source and type of water is missing. In the SVD, some low-flow thermal mineral springs are present as a result of the mixing of thermal and CO2-rich groundwater from the deep carbonate aquifer and the cold, shallow volcanic aquifer. Mineralogical and chemical analyses characterized the travertine and Fe-hydroxide deposits on Roman tanks and walls in Campetti Southwest and in a nearby ancient Roman bath along the Valchetta River. These deposits showed different relative concentrations of sedimentary and volcanic-related elements, testifying a geochemical evolution of the groundwater mixing and the presence of a paleothermal mineral spring in Campetti Southwest. This study investigated the influence of BFFSP on the thermohydraulic performance of a SATHEC(s) using a novel computational approach. The novelty lies in the detailed exploration of the interplay between BFFSP, MFRT, and key performance parameters. Unlike prior studies, which often focus on a limited range of operating conditions, this work employs a comprehensive parametric analysis encompassing two BFFSPs (95 mm and 125 mm) and four MFRTs (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 kg/h). This extensive analysis provides a deeper understanding of the trade-off between the HTRFR enhancement and PDP associated with the BFFSP across a wider range of operating conditions. This investigation leverages the power of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for high-fidelity analysis. ANSYS Fluent, a widely recognized commercial CFD software package, was used as a computational platform. A three-dimensional steady-state model of HEXR geometry was established. The cold fluid was modeled as water, and the hot fluid was modeled as water. The selection of appropriate turbulence models is crucial for accurate flow simulations within the complex geometry of HEXR. This study incorporates a well-established two-equation turbulence model to effectively capture turbulent flow behavior. The governing equations for mass, momentum, and energy conservation were solved numerically within the CFD framework. Convergence criteria were meticulously established to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the simulation results. BFFs are crucial components in HEXRs as they promote fluid mixing and turbulence on the HTRFR surface, thereby enhancing HTRFR. This study explores the interplay between BFFSP and HTRFR effectiveness. It is hypothesized that a larger BFFSP (125 mm) might lead to a higher HTC owing to the increased fluid mixing. However, the potential drawbacks of the increased PDP due to the flow restriction also need to be considered. The PDP across the HEXR is a critical parameter that affects pumping costs and overall system yield. This study investigates the impact of BFFSP on the PDP. It is expected that a larger BFFSP (125 mm) will result in a higher PDP, owing to the increased resistance to fluid flow. Here, we aim to quantify the trade-off between enhanced HTRFR and increased PDP associated with different BFFSPs. The optimal design of an HEXR seeks a balance between achieving a high HTRFR rate and minimizing pressure losses. HTRPD, a metric combining both HTC and PDP, was employed to evaluate the thermohydraulic performance. We hypothesized that a specific BFFSP might offer a superior HTRPD, indicating an optimal balance between HTRFR effectiveness and PDP for the investigated HEXR geometry and operating conditions. CFD simulations were conducted using ANSYS Fluent to analyze the effects of BFFSP and MFRT on the HTC, PDP, and HTRPD. The simulations employed a commercially available HEXR geometry with water as the cold and hot fluid. The results are presented and discussed to elucidate the relationships between the BFFSP, MFRT, and key performance parameters of the HEXR. This study provides valuable insights into the influence of BFFSP on the thermohydraulic performance of HEXRs. The findings can aid in optimizing the HEXR design by identifying the BFFSP that offers the best compromise between HTRFR enhancement and PDP for specific operating conditions. The results contribute to the knowledge base of HEXR design and optimization, potentially leading to improved yield in various industrial applications. The results indicate that a larger BFFSP (125 mm) leads to higher outlet temperatures but also results in a higher PDP compared to the 95 mm design. Conversely, the 95 mm BFFSP exhibits a lower PDP but achieves a lower HTC. In terms of thermohydraulic performance, as indicated by HTRPD, the 95 mm BFFSP with the lowest MFRT (0.1 kg/h) achieved the highest value, surpassing the 125 mm design by 19.81%. This suggests that a 95 mm BFFSP offers a better trade-off between HTRFR effectiveness and pressure loss, potentially improving the overall HEXR performance. Full article

The present study aims to analyze the heat transfer variations in different models of shell and tube heat exchangers considering geometric variations in the baffle angles and in the tube’s profiles. Each baffle configuration and geometric variation in the profiles were tested under different mass flow rates (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 kg·s−1) in the shell to study the heat transfer improvement. The models were simulated using a CFD simulation software ANSYS Fluent including an experimental geometry which was used to validate the simulation process. The experiment results are in good agreement with the CFD results. The analysis of the results shows that an angle of 60° in the baffles generated the highest heat flow (more than 40 kW) with an inclination to the cold flow inlet and a mixed distribution considering a mass flow rate of 1 kg·s−1 in the shell. In addition, the horizontal elliptic profile achieved a heat flow higher than 29 kW with a mass flow rate of 0.5 kg·s−1 in the shell. Full article

Bioactive peptides are promising cosmetic active ingredients that can improve skin health and appearance. They exhibit a broad spectrum of activity, including anti-aging, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to develop a safe, stable, and efficacious environmentally friendly (“green”) emulsion using a milk protein hydrolysate as a model active ingredient. Potential emulsions were formulated with biodegradable emollients, stabilized with naturally derived mixed emulsifier, and prepared by cold process. They were evaluated for rheological behavior (continuous rotation and oscillation tests), physical stability (dynamic mechanical thermal analysis—DMTA test), and texture profiles, as well as cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Rheological characterization revealed shear-thinning flow behavior with yield point from continuous rotation tests and predominantly elastic character from oscillation (amplitude and frequency sweep) tests, with small structural change detected in the DMTA test. These results implied satisfactory rheological properties and good stability. Texture analysis revealed acceptable spreadability and substantivity of the emulsions. The protein hydrolysate showed antioxidant activity. The developed emulsions showed low antibacterial activity against selected microorganisms, but this was due to the action of preservatives, not peptides. All potential emulsions showed a desirable safety profile. The results obtained provide the basis for the next stage of formulation development, i.e., in vivo efficacy tests. Full article

Waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel has some disadvantages, such as poor cold flow properties, low oxidation stability, and flash point during storage. These poor physicochemical properties can be improved by different ways, such as the addition of non-edible oil. The aim of this study to analyse physicochemical properties of the biodiesel made by between WCO and Schleichera oleosa (SO). The biodiesel produced with 70:30% of WCO and SO respectively as crude oil, further introducing of different KOH-based catalyst into this oil to obtained the methyl ester. The optimum yield transesterification process are 94% with 60 min. of the reaction time, 1 wt.% KOH, and 12:1 molar ratio the methanol to oil. On the other hand, the Schleichera oleosa blend shows oxidation stability at 6.8 h and 3.3 h for Waste cooking oil methyl ester (WCME). The reduction of cold flow and, on the contrary, the flash point increase were obtained with a 70:30% ratio of WCO and SO. The cold flow properties and flash point of the fuel. Thus, mixed WCO and Schleichera oleosa oil improve the physiochemical properties such as oxidation stability, flash point, and cold flow of biodiesel without the need for synthetic antioxidants. Metal hydride (MH) hydrogen storage and compression systems with near-atmospheric H2 suction pressure are necessary for the utilization of the low-pressure H2 produced by solid oxide electrolyzers or released as a byproduct of chemical industries. Such systems should provide reasonably high productivity in the modes of both charge (H2 absorption at PL ≤ 1 atm) and discharge (H2 desorption at PH = 2–5 atm), which implies the provision of H2 equilibrium pressures Peq < PL at the available cooling temperature (TL = 15–20 °C) and, at the same time, Peq > PH when heated to TH = 90–150 °C. This work presents results of the development of such systems based on AB5-type intermetallics characterized by Peq of 0.1–0.3 atm and 3–8 atm for H2 absorption at TL = 15 °C and H2 desorption at TH = 100 °C, respectively. The MH powders mixed with 1 wt.% of Ni-doped graphene-like material or expanded natural graphite for the improvement of H2 charge dynamics were loaded in a cylindrical container equipped with internal and external heat exchangers. The developed units with a capacity of about 1 Nm3 H2 were shown to exhibit H2 flow rates above 10 NL/min during H2 charge at ≤1 atm when cooled to ≤20 °C with cold water and H2 release at a pressure above 2 and 5 atm when heated to 90 and 120 °C with hot water and steam, respectively. Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamics of the Arctic region is discussed in the context of possible mechanisms which provide multistage cyclic transformations and transport of carbon through crust and mantle. Geodynamic processes control the abiogenic generation of hydrocarbons and the patterns of their localization. Possible mechanisms of abiotic hydrocarbon generation are explained in the context of carbon transport from subduction zones to rifts and serpentinization of ultramafic rocks in the rifts in the case of the Laptev Sea and Gakkel Ridge areas. The carbon of shallow crust origin migrates with encapsulated fragments of marine sediments which are consumed in the Pacific subduction zone where they become destroyed and transformed by different chemical and physical processes. The resulting C-species are involved in mantle convection flows and reach the continental rifts of the Laptev Sea and the Gakkel mid-ocean ridge. Thus, the hydrocarbons formed in the crust and in the mantle acquire signatures of abiotic origin. According to the authors, the scale of manifestation of abiogenic methanogenesis in the lower parts of the lithosphere and in the upper mantle is not so wide. Numerous small (mm and fractions of the mm) particles of exogenous matter and dispersed carbon pulled into the mantle can only form a stable crustal geochemical plume that propagates in the plane of movement of convective flows. Indirectly, the scale of manifestation of this process can be judged by the volumes of degassing of hydrocarbon and carbon dioxide gases, as well as hydrogen and its compounds in the rift systems of the earth’s crust, which are extremely insignificant. However, in the cold seas of the Eastern Arctic, massive emissions of bubble methane of mixed genesis were found. As shown in the literature, the range of variability of stable isotopes of carbon and 14C of methane in certain areas of discharge associated with rifting demonstrates values (anomalously heavy 13C, and young 14C) that can be considered as examples of presumably abiogenic origin. Our work is mostly theoretical and suggests further discussion and improvement of the mechanism of formation of abiogenic hydrocarbons and the processes of their transformation. Full article
