Effective flood management in agricultural fields has become increasingly important due to the rising frequency and intensity of rainfall events driven by climate change. This study investigates the applicability of urban flood analysis models—SWMM (1D) and K-Flood (2D)—to irrigated agricultural fields with artificial drainage systems. A case study was conducted in a rural area near the Sindae drainage station in Cheongju, South Korea, using rainfall data from an extreme weather event in 2017. The models simulated inland flooding and were validated against flood trace maps provided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS). Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis showed a true positive rate of 0.565, a false positive rate of 0.21, and an overall accuracy of 0.731, indicating reasonable agreement with observed inundation. Scenario analyses were also conducted to assess the effectiveness of three improvement strategies: reducing the Manning coefficient, increasing pump station capacity, and widening drainage channels. Among them, increasing pump capacity most effectively reduced flood volume, while channel widening had the greatest impact on reducing flood extent. These findings demonstrate the potential of urban flood models for application in agricultural contexts and support data-driven planning for rural flood mitigation. Full article

The FLEX-S3 mission by ESA will deliver key Level 2 products such as sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and vegetation-reflected radiance. To validate these, the SpaFLEX project, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, is developing a robust calibration and validation strategy in Spain. This includes test site setup, instrument characterization, and sampling protocols. A field campaign was conducted in two Holm Oak forests in Teruel, analyzing Sentinel-2 spatial heterogeneity and collecting ground, UAV, and airborne data. The results support scaling procedures to match the 300 m pixel resolution of FLEX-S3, ensuring product accuracy and compliance with ESA standards. Full article

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport conducted a demonstration project targeting pilot areas to commercialize drone delivery services in urban areas and to present a standard model. In this study, flight data on drone delivery routes in Ulju and drone hovering in Yeosu were collected and analyzed for flight safety. Since there are no domestic or international regulations on the stability of drone flight, we were given the task of analyzing whether drone path flight should be maintained within a 10 m error range from the planned path line by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and whether hovering works while satisfying the left and right radius errors and altitude errors within 3 m. Accordingly, the drone flight path data analyzed in Ulju met the criteria of up to 1.07%, and the hovering data analyzed in Yeosu met the criteria of less than 3% for the entire section data. Therefore, the drone flight stability evaluation analyzed in this paper is considered to have been passed. Based on the results of this study, is the data are expected to serve as a cornerstone for establishing guidelines for drone delivery flight data analysis regulations. Full article

Food sovereignty has gained significant political attention in recent years, proven by the recent change of the name of Italian Ministry of Agriculture. Coined by the transnational movement “La Via Campesina” in 1996, food sovereignty emphasizes sustainable food security and the right of populations to determine their own food policies. However, the concept is often misunderstood in the light of rising sovereigntist debate, and its original meaning, intertwined with long-term sustainability, is gradually disappearing. This study uses Q methodology to explore consumer perspectives on food sovereignty, identifying distinct groups that reflect how the concept has evolved and how it is perceived by the general population. The analysis is based on a sample of 24 participants from Italy. Starting from all sustainability issues contained in food sovereignty, relevant opinion groups have been identified. Results show that half of the groups still recognize their traditional meaning, while the other half understands food sovereignty as a modern form of autarchy. Full article

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, a semi-perennial herb from the Asteraceae family, is native to the Paraguay–Brazil border region. The growing industrial interest in this species is due to its natural sweetening properties, such as steviol and its derivatives, which offer sweetness without adding calories. Morphological traits are crucial for assessing genetic variability and ensuring distinctness, homogeneity, and stability (DHS) for cultivar protection. This study characterized 19 elite Stevia genotypes from Embrapa Cerrados’ Active Germplasm Bank (BAG) using 21 morphological descriptors from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA). Genetic distances were calculated using the simple coincidence index complement method, and clustering was performed via the Unweighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA). The results showed that 17 of the 21 descriptors (>80%) effectively differentiated the genotypes, revealing significant genetic variability. Dendrogram analysis identified at least four major similarity groups, highlighting the potential of these genotypes for Stevia breeding programs. These findings underscore the suitability of these elite genotypes for developing superior varieties adapted to Cerrado conditions, supporting future cultivation and genetic improvement efforts. This study examines the safety and cost-effectiveness of implementing shoulder rumble strips (SRS) and road lighting on Saudi Arabian freeways, providing insights into their roles in fostering sustainable transport systems. By leveraging the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) framework, this research develops localized Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) for these interventions, ensuring evidence-based and context-specific evaluations. Data were collected for two periods—pre-pandemic (2017–2019) and post-pandemic (2021–2022). For each period, we obtained traffic crash records from the Saudi Highway Patrol database, traffic volume data from the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services’ automated count stations, and roadway characteristics and pavement-condition metrics from the National Road Safety Center. The findings reveal that SRS reduces fatal and injury run-off-road crashes by 52.7% (CMF = 0.473) with a benefit–cost ratio of 14.12, highlighting their high cost-effectiveness. Road lighting, focused on nighttime crash reduction, decreases such crashes by 24% (CMF = 0.760), with a benefit–cost ratio of 1.25, although the adoption of solar-powered lighting systems offers potential for greater sustainability gains and a higher benefit–cost ratio. These interventions align with global sustainability goals by enhancing road safety, reducing the socio-economic burden of crashes, and promoting the integration of green technologies. This study not only provides actionable insights for achieving KSA Vision 2030’s target of improved road safety but also demonstrates how engineering solutions can be harmonized with sustainability objectives to advance equitable, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation systems. The digital business environment is rapidly evolving with advancements in information technology (IT), increasing the risk of information security incidents. Grounded in the resource-based view and in contingency theory, this study adopts a different approach from prior research by conceptualizing security management activities not as mere risk control mechanisms, but as strategic innovation drivers that can enhance corporate performance (sales revenue and operating profit). The authors develop a research model with six independent variables, including internal and external security management activities, CISO role configuration (independent or dual-role with CIO), and investment levels in IT and information security. The dependent variables include sales revenue and operating profit, with ISMS or ISO certification as a moderating variable. Using information security (IS) disclosures and financial data from 545 Korean firms that have reported their security management activities to the Ministry of Science and ICT, multiple regression and moderation analyses reveal that high IT investment negatively impacts performance, but this effect is mitigated when formal security systems, like ISMS or ISO, are in place. The results suggest that integrating recognized security frameworks into management strategies can enhance both innovation and financial outcomes, encouraging a proactive approach to security management. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is regarded as an important tool for analyzing the flow field, thermal environment, and air quality around the built environment. However, for built environment applications, the high computational cost of CFD hinders large-scale scenario simulation and efficient design optimization. In the field of built environment research, surrogate modeling has become a key technology to connect the needs of high-fidelity CFD simulation and rapid prediction, whereas the low-dimensional nature of traditional surrogate models is unable to match the physical complexity and prediction needs of built flow fields. Therefore, combining machine learning (ML) with CFD to predict flow fields in built environments offers a promising way to increase simulation speed while maintaining reasonable accuracy. This review briefly reviews traditional surrogate models and focuses on ML-based surrogate models, especially the specific application of neural network architectures in rapidly predicting flow fields in the built environment. The review indicates that ML accelerates the three core aspects of CFD, namely mesh preprocessing, numerical solving, and post-processing visualization, in order to achieve efficient coupled CFD simulation. Although ML surrogate models still face challenges such as data availability, multi-physics field coupling, and generalization capability, the emergence of physical information-driven data enhancement techniques effectively alleviates the above problems. Meanwhile, the integration of traditional methods with ML can further enhance the comprehensive performance of surrogate models. Notably, the online ministry of trained ML models using transfer learning strategies deserves further research. These advances will provide an important basis for advancing efficient and accurate operational solutions in sustainable building design and operation. Full article

Bridges, owing to their intricacy, represent pivotal yet relatively underexplored assets within the domain of maintenance services in civil engineering. While international evaluation methodologies exist to gauge the overall condition of bridges, they often fall short in establishing interrelationships among individual elements, thereby neglecting insights into the influence exerted by each element’s condition on the bridge’s overall performance. This research introduces an integral fuzzy model evaluation with a preventive approach, designed to assess both the integral condition of a bridge and its constituent elements. Furthermore, the study generates maintenance recommendations, subsequently evaluated by professionals to determine the most suitable course of action based on available resources. To validate the efficacy of the proposed model, a case study involving Bridge 15-016-00.0-0-04.0 PIV, known as “La Cuesta” in Mexico, is presented. The findings indicate that the bridge is in a satisfactory condition and warrants high-priority attention. Bridge analysis is compared with evaluations conducted using the methods of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Peru. The comparative evaluation reveals that our proposed model provides a more detailed representation of deterioration, facilitating more efficient maintenance planning by considering the hierarchical relationships between the bridge’s modules and elements. Background/Objectives: Long working hours among pediatricians negatively affect their health and patient safety. In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare launched the “Work Style Reform for Physicians” in 2024. However, whether these reforms have effectively reduced pediatricians’ working hours remains unclear. We surveyed pediatricians and pediatric residents working in hospital pediatric departments to assess whether the reform has reduced their long working hours. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to pediatricians in hospitals, collecting data on demographics, working hours, night shifts, and other working conditions. A multivariate logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with working ≥60 and ≥80 h on a weekly basis. Results: Questionnaires were sent to 835 hospitals, with valid responses from 815 pediatricians across 316 hospitals. Among them, 31.7% worked 50–60 h per week, 18.4% worked 60–70 h, 7.7% worked 70–80 h, and 4.9% worked >80 h. Factors associated with working >60 h included being <30 years old and working in a department with five or more physicians. Pediatricians working >80 h were more likely to have a cardiology subspecialty and work in a department with five or more physicians. Conclusions: Although the “Work Style Reform for Physicians” has reduced long working hours among pediatricians, many still experience excessive workloads. Full article

Background: Mobility limitation is a pivotal but under-documented dimension of disability in Saudi Arabia. Leveraging the 2017 National Disability Survey, this cross-sectional study provides a population-wide profile of mobility-related physical difficulty. Objectives: Five research aims were pursued: (1) estimate national prevalence and severity by sex; (2) map regional differentials; (3) examine educational and marital correlates; (4) characterize cause, duration, and familial context among those with multiple limitations; and (5) describe patterns of assistive-aid and social-service use. Methods: Publicly available aggregate data covering 20,408,362 Saudi citizens were cleaned and analyzed across 14 mobility indicators and three baseline files. Prevalence ratios and χ2 tests assessed associations. Results: Overall, 1,445,723 Saudis (7.1%) reported at least one functional difficulty; 833,136 (4.1%) had mobility difficulty, of whom 305,867 (36.7%) had mobility-only impairment. Severity was chiefly mild (35% of cases), with moderate (16%) and severe (7%) forms forming a descending pyramid. Prevalence varied more than threefold across the thirteen regions, peaking in Aseer (9.4%) and bottoming in Najran (2.9%). Mobility difficulty clustered among adults with no schooling (36.1%) and widowed status (18.5%), with sharper female disadvantage in both domains (p < 0.001). Among those with additional limitations, chronic disease dominated etiology (56.3%), and 90.1% had lived with disability for ≥25 years; women were overrepresented in the longest-duration band. Aid utilization was led by crutches (47.7%), personal assistance (25.3%), and wheelchairs (22.6%), while 83.8% accessed Ministry rehabilitation services, yet fewer than 4% used home or daycare support. Conclusions: These findings highlight sizeable, regionally concentrated, and gender-patterned mobility burdens, underscoring the need for education-sensitive prevention, chronic-care management, investment in advanced assistive technology, and distributed community services to achieve Vision 2030 inclusion goals. A comparative analysis of testicular tumors in dogs and humans highlights notable similarities in cancer behavior, particularly regarding environmental influences. The ubiquitous distribution of endocrine disruptors in industrialized countries and their effects are strongly linked to the development of testicular cancers. This study examined 221 and 174 cases of testicular tumor in dogs and humans, respectively, from the Campania Animal Cancer Registry and the database of the National Cancer Institute “Fondazione G. Pascale-IRCCS”, between 2020 and 2023. These data were integrated with environmental data from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security website and the Campania Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPAC). The areas with the highest frequency of testicular tumors in both species were the municipalities of Napoli, Salerno, and Caserta, and their corresponding provinces. The same locations experienced severe contamination of soil and water by environmental pollutants, probably correlated to testicular tumors. Although the molecular mechanisms are not yet fully understood, our data suggest a strong link between the frequency of testicular tumors in humans and dogs and high concentrations of environmental pollutants in the reported locations. These findings emphasize the value of dogs as a potential animal model for studying human health and the effect of environmental factors on cancer development. Full article

Rural revitalization, as a crucial strategic goal for rural development in contemporary China, encompasses multidimensional connotations and requirements. Following the establishment of the ‘three rights separation’ system in 2014, land transfer has increasingly assumed a vital role, demonstrating a close and complex intrinsic logical relationship with rural revitalization. To comprehensively analyze the diverse impacts of land transfer on rural revitalization as discussed in the literature, we employ a ‘goal–strategy–indicator–outcome’ analytical framework to conduct a meta-analysis and visual assessment of 131 cases drawn from 52 articles published over the past decade. We systematically explore the pathways by which land transfer impacts rural revitalization and validate the results using typical cases reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs through Python 3.9 analysis. The findings reveal the following: (1) Land transfer generally exerts a positive impact on rural revitalization (81.7% of 107 cases). (2) It significantly boosts living standards (84% positive cases) and industrial prosperity (88.4% positive cases); rural cultural civilization shows 100% positive cases yet with statistically insignificant coefficients, while its impacts on ecological livability (60%) and effective governance (70.6%) are insignificant. (3) Among 12 indicators, those related to agricultural production and farmers’ livelihoods are positive, whereas those concerning rural ecology and governance are negative. This study indicates that land transfer plays a key role in the rural revitalization strategy, but the ecological impacts and governance challenges that it presents require ongoing attention and optimization at the policy level. Cassava is the sixth most important food crop and is cultivated in more than 100 countries. The crop tolerates low soil fertility and drought, enabling it to play a role in climate adaptation strategies. Cassava generally requires careful preparation to remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) before its consumption, but HCN concentrations can vary considerably between varieties. Climate change and low inputs, particularly carbon and nutrients, affect agriculture in Pacific Island countries where cassava is commonly grown alongside traditional crops (e.g., taro). Despite increasing popularity in this region, there is limited experimental data about cassava crop management for different local varieties, their relative toxicity and nutritional value for human consumption, and their interaction with changing climate conditions. To help address this knowledge gap, three field experiments were conducted at the Koronivia Research Station of the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture. Two varieties of cassava with contrasting HCN content were planted at three different times coinciding with the start of the wet (September-October) or dry (April) seasons. A time series of measurements was conducted during the full 18-month or differing 6-month durations of each crop, based on destructive harvests and phenological observations. The former included determination of total biomass, HCN potential, carbon isotopes (δ13C), and elemental composition. Yield and nutritional value were significantly affected by variety and time of planting, and there were interactions between the two factors. Findings from this work will improve cassava management locally and will provide a valuable dataset for agronomic and biophysical model testing. Full article

Authorities responsible for critical infrastructure, particularly bridges, face significant challenges. Many bridges, constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, are now approaching or have surpassed their intended service life. A report from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMVI) indicates that about 12% of the 40,000 federal trunk road bridges in Germany are in “inadequate or unsatisfactory” condition. Similar issues are observed in other countries worldwide. Economic constraints prevent ad hoc replacements, necessitating continued operation with frequent and costly inspections. This situation creates an urgent need for cost-effective, permanent monitoring solutions. This study explores the potential use of low-cost acceleration sensors for monitoring infrastructure structures. Inclination is calculated from the acceleration data of the sensor, using gravitational acceleration as a reference point. Long-term changes in inclination may indicate a change in the geometry of the structure, thereby triggering alarm thresholds. It is particularly important to consider specific challenges associated with low measurement accuracy and the susceptibility of sensors to environmental influences in a low-cost setting. The results of laboratory tests allow for an estimation of measurement accuracy and an analysis of the various error characteristics of the sensors. The article outlines the methodology for developing low-cost inclination sensor systems, the laboratory tests conducted, and the evaluation of different measures to enhance sensor accuracy.
