The introduction of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the electricity grid is changing the price dynamics of the electricity market and creating room for flexibility on the consumption side. This paper investigates different aspects of the interaction between the RES share, electricity spot prices, and electric vehicle (EV) charging strategies. Based on empirical data from Germany, France, and the Czech Republic for the period 2015–2025, four research hypotheses are tested using correlation and regression analysis, cost simulations, and classification algorithms. The results confirm a negative correlation between the RES share and electricity prices, as well as the effectiveness of smart charging in reducing costs. At the same time, it is shown that the occurrence of negative prices is significantly affected by a high RES share. The correlation analysis further suggests that higher production from RESs increases the potential for price optimisation through smart charging. The findings have implications for policymaking aimed at flexible consumption and efficient RES integration. Full article

Social media platforms like Instagram significantly shape destination images and influence tourist behavior. Understanding how different cities are represented and perceived on these platforms is crucial for effective tourism marketing. This study provides a comparative analysis of Instagram content and engagement patterns in Seoul and Tokyo, two major Asian metropolises, to derive actionable marketing insights. We collected and analyzed 59,944 public Instagram posts geotagged or location-tagged within Seoul (n = 29,985) and Tokyo (n = 29,959). We employed a mixed-methods approach involving content categorization using a fine-tuned convolutional neural network (CNN) model, engagement metric analysis (likes, comments), Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner (VADER) sentiment analysis and thematic classification of comments, geospatial analysis (Kernel Density Estimation [KDE], Moran’s I), and predictive modeling (Gradient Boosting with SHapley Additive exPlanations [SHAP] value analysis). A validation analysis using balanced samples (n = 2000 each) was conducted to address Tokyo’s lower geotagged data proportion. While both cities showed ‘Person’ as the dominant content category, notable differences emerged. Tokyo exhibited higher like-based engagement across categories, particularly for ‘Animal’ and ‘Food’ content, while Seoul generated slightly more comments, often expressing stronger sentiment. Qualitative comment analysis revealed Seoul comments focused more on emotional reactions, whereas Tokyo comments were often shorter, appreciative remarks. Geospatial analysis identified distinct hotspots. The validation analysis confirmed these spatial patterns despite Tokyo’s data limitations. Predictive modeling highlighted hashtag counts as the key engagement driver in Seoul and the presence of people in Tokyo. Seoul and Tokyo project distinct visual narratives and elicit different engagement patterns on Instagram. These findings offer practical implications for destination marketers, suggesting tailored content strategies and location-based campaigns targeting identified hotspots and specific content themes. This study underscores the value of integrating quantitative and qualitative analyses of social media data for nuanced destination marketing insights. Full article

Social network platforms have a big impact on the development of companies by influencing clients’ behaviors and sentiments, which directly affect corporate reputations. Analyzing this feedback has become an essential component of business intelligence, supporting the improvement of long-term marketing strategies on a larger scale. The implementation of powerful sentiment analysis models requires a comprehensive and in-depth examination of each stage of the process. In this study, we present a new comparative approach for several feature extraction techniques, including TF-IDF, Word2Vec, FastText, and BERT embeddings. These methods are applied to three multilingual datasets collected from hotel review platforms in the tourism sector in English, French, and Arabic languages. Those datasets were preprocessed through cleaning, normalization, labeling, and balancing before being trained on various machine learning and deep learning algorithms. The effectiveness of each feature extraction method was evaluated using metrics such as accuracy, F1-score, precision, recall, ROC AUC curve, and a new metric that measures the execution time for generating word representations. Our extensive experiments demonstrate significant and excellent results, achieving accuracy rates of approximately 99% for the English dataset, 94% for the Arabic dataset, and 89% for the French dataset. These findings confirm the important impact of vectorization techniques on the performance of sentiment analysis models. They also highlight the important relationship between balanced datasets, effective feature extraction methods, and the choice of classification algorithms. So, this study aims to simplify the selection of feature extraction methods and appropriate classifiers for each language, thereby contributing to advancements in sentiment analysis. Full article

The study relies on an extensive dataset (≈1.86 million news headlines) to investigate the heterogeneity and predictive power of explicit sentiment signals (TextBlob, VADER, and FinBERT) and implied sentiment (VIX) for stock market trends. We find that news content predominantly consists of objective or neutral information, with only a small portion carrying subjective or emotive weight. There is a structural market bias toward upswings (bullish market states). Market behavior appears anticipatory rather than reactive: forward-looking implied sentiment captures a substantial share (≈45–50%) of the variation in stock returns. By contrast, sentiment scores, even when disaggregated into firm- and non-firm-specific subscores, lack robust predictive power. However, weekend and holiday sentiment contains modest yet valuable market signals. Algorithm-wise, Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) stands out in both classification (bullish vs. bearish) and regression tasks. Neither FinBERT news sentiment, historical returns, nor implied volatility offer a consistently exploitable edge over market efficiency. Thus, our findings lend empirical support to both the weak-form and semi-strong forms of the Efficient Market Hypothesis. In the realm of exploitable trading strategies, markets remain an enigma against systematic alpha. Full article

A chili pepper variety and origin detection system that integrates a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with an electronic nose (e-nose) is proposed in this paper to address the issues of variety confusion and origin ambiguity in the chili pepper market. The system uses the AIRSENSE PEN3 e-nose from Germany to collect gas data from thirteen different varieties of chili peppers and two specific varieties of chili peppers originating from seven different regions. Model training is conducted via the proposed lightweight convolutional neural network ChiliPCNN. By combining the strengths of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a multilayer perceptron (MLP), the ChiliPCNN model achieves an efficient and accurate classification process, requiring only 268 parameters for chili pepper variety identification and 244 parameters for origin tracing, with 364 floating-point operations (FLOPs) and 340 FLOPs, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with other advanced deep learning methods, the ChiliPCNN has superior classification performance and good stability. Specifically, ChiliPCNN achieves accuracy rates of 94.62% in chili pepper variety identification and 93.41% in origin tracing tasks involving Jiaoyang No. 6, with accuracy rates reaching as high as 99.07% for Xianjiao No. 301. These results fully validate the effectiveness of the model. To further increase the detection speed of the ChiliPCNN, its acceleration circuit is designed on the Xilinx Zynq7020 FPGA from the United States and optimized via fixed-point arithmetic and loop unrolling strategies. The optimized circuit reduces the latency to 5600 ns and consumes only 1.755 W of power, significantly improving the resource utilization rate and processing speed of the model. This system not only achieves rapid and accurate chili pepper variety and origin detection but also provides an efficient and reliable intelligent agricultural management solution, which is highly important for promoting the development of agricultural automation and intelligence. The authenticity of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Feta cheese is critical for consumer confidence and market integrity, particularly in light of widespread concerns over economically motivated adulteration. This study evaluated the potential of Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometric modeling to differentiate authentic Feta from non-Feta white brined cheeses. A total of 90 cheese samples, consisting of verified Feta and cow milk cheeses, were analyzed in both freeze-dried and fresh forms. Spectral data from raw, first derivative, and second derivative spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis–linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) to distinguish authentic Feta from non-Feta cheese samples. Derivative processing significantly improved classification accuracy. All classification models performed relatively well, but the PLS-DA model applied to second derivative spectra of freeze-dried samples achieved the best results, with 95.8% accuracy, 100% sensitivity, and 90.9% specificity. The most consistently highlighted discriminatory regions across models included ~2920 cm−1 (C–H stretching in lipids), ~1650 cm−1 (Amide I band, corresponding to C=O stretching in proteins), and the 1300–900 cm−1 range, which is associated with carbohydrate-related bands. These findings support ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as a rapid, non-destructive tool for routine Feta authentication. The approach offers promise for enhancing traceability and quality assurance in high-value dairy products. Full article

Obstructive sleep apnea is a highly prevalent respiratory disease linked to increased morbidity and mortality, a reduced quality of life, and increased economic costs if not treated. Oral appliances are an emerging treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea. This review concluded that many oral appliances marketed as “custom” include modifications and prefabricated items, and therefore do not meet the definition of “custom” oral appliances. This misclassification could hinder the accurate characterization, evaluation, and appropriate prescription of oral appliances. To better inform the clinical utilization of custom oral appliances and to more closely align sleep medicine with the benefits of personalized medicine, we propose that the custom oral appliance classification be further refined into semi-custom and precision-custom categories. The lack of precise definitions in plastics-related terminology continues to hinder the development of coherent sustainability strategies across the materials value chain. This communication revisits current definitions of plastics, polymers, and bioplastics, distinguishing between source (bio-based vs. fossil-based), structure (synthetic vs. natural polymer), and degradation behaviour (persistent vs. compostable or biodegradable). It critiques ambiguous classifications promoted in policy and marketing discourse. It introduces the concept of “Zero-Trace Plastic” (ZTP) to refer to materials that are non-plastic substitutes intended for versatile plastic-like uses while guaranteeing no trace of synthetic plastics in their composition and no contribution to pollution across their lifecycle. The ZTPframework prioritises complete mineralisation without plastic or microplastics or chemical residues under real-world conditions. ZTP is proposed not as a replacement for existing biodegradability standards, but it helps distinguish between plastic and non-plastic biopolymers and works as a complementary benchmark for biodegradability that aligns with and extends them by incorporating environmental specificity and system-wide traceability. The paper proposes a harmonised terminology matrix and calls for coordinated efforts by international agencies and standardisation institutes, national bodies and industries to avoid using misleading terminologies like bioplastics, often used for greenwashing and to enhance circular material strategies. The sheaths of bamboo shoots, characterized by distinct colors and spotting patterns, are key phenotypic markers influencing species classification, market value, and genetic studies. This study introduces YOLOv8-BS, a deep learning model optimized for detecting these traits in Chimonobambusa utilis using a dataset from Jinfo Mountain, China. Enhanced by data augmentation techniques, including translation, flipping, and contrast adjustment, YOLOv8-BS outperformed benchmark models (YOLOv7, YOLOv5, YOLOX, and Faster R-CNN) in color and spot detection. For color detection, it achieved a precision of 85.9%, a recall of 83.4%, an F1-score of 84.6%, and an average precision (AP) of 86.8%. For spot detection, it recorded a precision of 90.1%, a recall of 92.5%, an F1-score of 91.1%, and an AP of 96.1%. These results demonstrate superior accuracy and robustness, enabling precise phenotypic analysis for bamboo germplasm evaluation and genetic diversity studies. YOLOv8-BS supports precision agriculture by providing a scalable tool for sustainable bamboo-based industries. Future improvements could enhance model adaptability for fine-grained varietal differences and real-time applications. Full article

Customer sentiment analysis plays a pivotal role in the digital economy by offering comprehensive insights that inform strategic business decisions, optimize digital marketing initiatives, and improve overall customer satisfaction. We propose a large language model-based topic-level sentiment analysis framework. We employ a BERT-based model to generate contextualized vector representations of the documents, and then clustering algorithms are automatically applied to group documents into topics. Once the topics are formed, a GPT model is used to perform sentiment classification on the content related to each topic. The simulations show the effectiveness of this approach, where selecting appropriate clustering techniques yields more semantically coherent topics. Furthermore, topic-level sentiment polarization shows that 31.7% of all negative sentiment concentrates on the shopping experience, despite an overall positive sentiment trend. Full article

A Risk-Based Analysis of Lightweight Drones: Evaluating the Harmless Threshold Through Human-Centered Safety Criteria

In recent years, the rapid development of lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology under 250 g has begun to challenge the validity of existing mass-based safety classifications. The commonly used 250 g threshold for defining “harmless” UAVs has become a subject requiring more detailed evaluations, especially as new models with increased speed and performance enter the market. This study aims to reassess the adequacy of the current 250 g mass limit by conducting a comprehensive analysis using human-centered injury metrics, including kinetic energy, Blunt Criterion (BC), Viscous Criterion (VC), and the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). Within this scope, an extensive dataset of commercial UAV models under 500 g was compiled, with a particular focus on the sub-250 g segment. For each model, KE, BC, VC, and AIS values were calculated using publicly available technical data and validated physical models. The results were compared against established injury thresholds, such as 14.9 J (AIS-3 serious injury), 25 J (“harmless” threshold), and 33.9 J (AIS-4 severe injury). Furthermore, new recommendations were developed for regulatory authorities, including energy-based classification systems and mission-specific dynamic threshold mechanisms. According to the findings of this study, most UAVs under 250 g continue to remain below the current “harmless” threshold values. However, some next-generation high-speed UAV models are approaching or exceeding critical KE levels, indicating a need to reassess existing regulatory approaches. Additionally, the strong correlation between both BC and VC metrics with AIS outcomes demonstrates that these indicators are complementary and valuable tools for assessing injury risk. In this context, the adoption of an energy-based supplementary classification and dynamic, mission-based regulatory frameworks is recommended. Full article

This study provides a comprehensive assessment and synthesis of the literature on short-selling. It performs a lexicometric analysis, providing a quantitative review of 1093 peer-reviewed journal articles to identify and illustrate the main themes in short-selling research. Almost half the published literature on short-selling is thematically clustered around portfolio management techniques. Other key themes involve short-selling as it relates to risk management, strategic management, and market irregularities. Descending hierarchical classification examines the overall structure of the textual corpus of the short-selling literature and the relationships between its key terms. Similarity analysis reveals that the short-selling literature is highly concentrated, with most conceptual groups closely aligned and fitting into overlapping or conceptually similar areas. Some notable groups highlight prior short-selling studies of market dynamics, behavioral factors, technological advancements, and regulatory frameworks, which can serve as a foundation for market regulators to make more informed decisions that enhance overall market stability. Additionally, this study proposes a conceptual framework in which short-selling can be either a driver or an outcome by integrating the literature on its antecedents, consequences, explanatory variables, and boundary conditions. Nonetheless, despite evident practical advantages for specific targeting strategies and operational efficiency, the degree of GIS integration into academic marketing literature remains ambiguous. Clarifying this uncertainty is beneficial for advancing theoretical understanding and ensuring retail strategies fully leverage robust, data-driven spatial intelligence. To examine the intellectual development of the field, co-occurrence analysis, topic mapping, and citation structure visualization were performed on 4952 peer-reviewed articles using the Bibliometrix R package (version 4.3.3) within R software (version 4.4.1). The results demonstrate that although GIS-based methods have been effectively incorporated into fields like site selection and spatial segmentation, traditional marketing research has not yet entirely adopted them. One of the study’s key findings is the distinction between “author keywords” and “keywords plus,” where researchers concentrate on novel topics like omnichannel retail, artificial intelligence, and logistics. However, “Keywords plus” still refers to more traditional terms such as pricing, customer satisfaction, and consumer behavior. This discrepancy presents a misalignment between current research trends and indexed classification practices. Although the mainstream retail research lacks terminology connected to geomarketing, a theme evolution analysis reveals a growing focus on technology-driven and sustainability-related concepts associated with the Retail 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms. These findings underscore a conceptual and structural deficiency in the literature and indicate the necessity for enhanced integration of GIS and spatial decision support systems (SDSS) in retail marketing. The mushroom Stropharia rugoso-annulata is one of the most popular varieties in the international market because it is highly nutritious and has a delicious flavor. However, grading is still performed manually, leading to inconsistent grading standards and low efficiency. In this study, deep learning and computer vision techniques were used to develop an automated air-blown grading system for classifying this mushroom into three quality grades. The system consisted of a classification module and a grading module. In the classification module, the cap and stalk regions were extracted using the YOLOv8-seg algorithm, then post-processed using OpenCV based on quantitative grading indexes, forming the proposed SegGrade algorithm. In the grading module, an air-blown grading system with an automatic feeding unit was developed in combination with the SegGrade algorithm. The experimental results show that for 150 randomly selected mushrooms, the trained YOLOv8-seg algorithm achieved an accuracy of 99.5% in segmenting the cap and stalk regions, while the SegGrade algorithm achieved an accuracy of 94.67%. Furthermore, the system ultimately achieved an average grading accuracy of 80.66% and maintained the integrity of the mushrooms. Multilayer Network Modeling for Brand Knowledge Discovery: Integrating TF-IDF and TextRank in Heterogeneous Semantic Space

In the era of homogenized competition, brand knowledge has become a critical factor that influences consumer purchasing decisions. However, traditional single-layer network models fail to capture the multi-dimensional semantic relationships embedded in brand-related textual data. To address this gap, this study proposes a BKMN framework integrating TF-IDF and TextRank algorithms for comprehensive brand knowledge discovery. By analyzing 19,875 consumer reviews of a mobile phone brand from JD website, we constructed a tri-layer network comprising TF-IDF-derived keywords, TextRank-derived keywords, and their overlapping nodes. The model incorporates co-occurrence matrices and centrality metrics (degree, closeness, betweenness, eigenvector) to identify semantic hubs and interlayer associations. The results reveal that consumers prioritize attributes such as “camera performance”, “operational speed”, “screen quality”, and “battery life”. Notably, the overlap layer exhibits the highest node centrality, indicating convergent consumer focus across algorithms. The network demonstrates small-world characteristics (average path length = 1.627) with strong clustering (average clustering coefficient = 0.848), reflecting cohesive consumer discourse around key features. Meanwhile, this study proposes the Mul-LSTM model for sentiment analysis of reviews, achieving a 93% sentiment classification accuracy, revealing that consumers have a higher proportion of positive attitudes towards the brand’s cell phones, which provides a quantitative basis for enterprises to understand users’ emotional tendencies and optimize brand word-of-mouth management. This research advances brand knowledge modeling by synergizing heterogeneous algorithms and multilayer network analysis. Its practical implications include enabling enterprises to pinpoint competitive differentiators and optimize marketing strategies. Future work could extend the framework to incorporate sentiment dynamics and cross-domain applications in smart home or cosmetic industries. Full article
