Background/Objectives: Cancer is a complex disease that affects patients’ nutritional and psychological status. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of patients diagnosed with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers and evaluate its association with anthropometric measurements, nutrient intake, and psychological symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 patients with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers. Data were collected face-to-face by a questionnaire that included the Subjective Global Assessment-(SGA), Cachexia Assessment Criteria, 24 h Food Consumption Record, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised-(SCL-90-R). Some anthropometric measurements were collected. Results: Body Mass Index (BMI) was found to be significantly lower (p < 0.001) in SGA-B (moderately malnourished) and SGA-C (severely malnourished) compared to those in SGA-A (well-nourished). The calf circumference was significantly lower (p = 0.002) in SGA-C compared to those in SGA-A and SGA-B. The mean SGA scores were found to be higher in cachexia-diagnosed participants (p < 0.001). The energy intake of SGA-C was significantly lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). In addition, the energy intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-C was lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Regarding the intake of vitamins A, C, E, B1, and B6 and carotene, folate, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc, SGA-B and SGA-C were significantly lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Additionally, only phobic anxiety was found to be significantly higher in SGA-B than in SGA-A (p: 0.024). Conclusions: As the level of malnutrition increased, a reduction in some nutrient intake and anthropometric measurements was observed. No significant difference was found in any psychological symptoms except phobic anxiety. With this in mind, it is important that every cancer patient, regardless of the stage of the disease, is referred to a dietitian from the time of diagnosis. Full article

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death in Bangladesh, disproportionately affecting low socio-economic status (SES) populations. This review, guided by the WHO Social Determinants of Health framework and Rockefeller-Lancet Planetary Health Report, examined how social, economic, and ecological factors link SES to TB burden. The first literature search identified 28 articles focused on SES-TB relationships in Bangladesh. A second search through snowballing and conceptual mapping yielded 55 more papers of diverse source types and disciplines. Low-SES groups face elevated TB risk due to smoking, biomass fuel use, malnutrition, limited education, stigma, financial barriers, and hazardous housing or workplaces. These factors delay care-seeking, worsen outcomes, and fuel transmission, especially among women. High-SES groups more often face comorbidities like diabetes, which increase TB risk. Broader contextual drivers include urbanisation, weak labour protections, cultural norms, and poor governance. Recommendations include housing and labour reform, gender parity in education, and integrating private providers into TB programmes. These align with the WHO End TB Strategy, UN SDGs and Planetary Health Quadruple Aims, which expand the traditional Triple Aim for health system design by integrating environmental sustainability alongside improved patient outcomes, population health, and cost efficiency. Future research should explore trust in frontline workers, reasons for consulting informal carers, links between makeshift housing and TB, and integrating ecological determinants into existing frameworks. Background and Objectives: Malnutrition is one of the most common complications in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) and is closely linked to increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of HD patients and the clinical relevance of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters such as the percent body fat (PBF), skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), extracellular water-to-total body water ratio (ECW/TBW), and phase angle (PhA) in assessing malnutrition in Vietnamese HD patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 184 patients undergoing hemodialysis in Hanoi, Vietnam. The BIA parameters were measured by the InBody S10 body composition analyzer, while malnutrition was assessed by the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), with a GNRI <92 classified as a high risk of malnutrition. The independent BIA variables for predicting malnutrition and its cut-off values were explored using logistic regression models and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, respectively. Results: Among the study population, 42.9% (79/184) of patients were identified as being at a high risk of malnutrition. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a higher ECW/TBW was independently associated with an increased risk of malnutrition, while the PBF, SMI, and PhA expressed significant and inverse associations with the malnutrition risk after adjusting for multiple confounders. The cut-off values for predicting the high risk of malnutrition in overall HD patients were determined to be 20.45%, 7.75 kg/m2, 5.45°, and 38.03% for the PBF, the SMI, the PhA, and the ECW/TBW ratio, respectively. Conclusions: BIA parameters, including the PBF, SMI, PhA, and ECW/TBW ratio, could serve as indicators of malnutrition in general Vietnamese patients with HD. Full article

There is a well-established association between cystic fibrosis (CF) and malnutrition. Several comorbid conditions have also been associated with undernutrition in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). Highly effective modulator therapy has allowed for a paradigm shift altering disease progression and management. Modulator use has even been associated with acceleration of weight trajectory causing overnutrition, which can lead to cardiovascular and metabolic comorbid conditions. This review explores how nutritional status is evolving in the era of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators in people with CF, specifically in children. By synthesizing current research, we aim to support pediatric healthcare providers and nutritionists in delivering tailored, proactive nutritional care in this new therapeutic landscape. Full article

Background/Objectives: Malnutrition in older adults is both preventable and treatable, yet its detection and etiology remain complex. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition and various factors involved in the etiology of malnutrition in community-dwelling individuals aged 65 years and older. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with community-dwelling individuals aged 65 years and older in a health center in Ağrı, Türkiye. The nutritional status of older adults was measured using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and a series of validated instruments, including the Standardized Mini Mental Examination (MMSE), body composition measurements (BIA), dietary intake records, and physical performance tests such as hand grip strength, chair stand, and Timed ‘Up & Go’ (TUG) Test. Statistical analyses included chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests for group comparisons and logistic regression to investigate independent factors associated with risk of malnutrition. Results: A total of 182 participants were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 72.1 ± 6.0 years. Of the participants, 59.3% were male. 1.6% of the participants were malnourished, and 25.3% were at risk of malnutrition. Perceived health status compared to peers (OR: 1.734, 95% CI: 1.256–2.392, p = 0.001), lower appetite status (OR: 1.942, 95% CI: 1.459–2.585, p < 0.001) and lower waist circumference (OR: 1.089, 95% CI: 1.040–1.140, p < 0.001) were independent predictors of malnutrition risk. Conclusions: The risk of malnutrition was higher among individuals with lower appetite, poorer self-perceived health status compared to peers, and smaller waist circumference. Reduced physical function and strength were also associated with an increased risk of malnutrition. Full article

Aging is a multifactorial process that affects various physiological functions, including masticatory performance, which is crucial for oral health and nutritional well-being. Impaired masticatory function, often due to factors such as tooth loss, reduced salivation, or muscle atrophy, can lead to significant nutritional challenges and compromise the overall health of elderly individuals. Recent research has illuminated the interconnectedness of masticatory function, oral microbiota, and gut health, suggesting that altered chewing ability may disrupt oral microbial communities, which in turn affect gastrointestinal health and systemic inflammation. This commentary review provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of masticatory function in aging, exploring its impact on the oral microbiota, gut health, and broader nutritional status. We discuss the potential consequences of impaired mastication, including malnutrition, dysbiosis, and gastrointestinal disorders, and explore possible strategies for improving masticatory function and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through interventions like dietary modifications, oral care, and rehabilitation. We aim to underscore the importance of integrating masticatory function management into the broader context of aging-related healthcare, promoting holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to support nutritional needs and quality of life in older adults. Background/Objective: This study examines the composite influence of frailty, malnutrition, and anemia on postoperative outcomes for patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). Methods: In this retrospective cohort study using the 2011–2022 NSQIP database, we utilized CPT and ICD codes to identify ASD patients who underwent PSF. Subjects were stratified based on frailty status. Frail patients were then classified according to malnutrition and anemia status. Frailty was determined using the revised risk analysis index (RAI-rev). Our primary outcomes were extended length of stay (LOS), non-routine discharge (NRD), 30-day adverse events (AE), and 30-day mortality. For each outcome, we fitted four nested multivariable logistic regression models (RAI-rev + anemia + malnutrition, RAI-rev + anemia, RAI-rev + malnutrition, and RAI-rev alone) and compared the incremental discrimination of each model using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Of 3639 patients, 460 were frail alone, 266 were frail + anemic, 37 were frail + malnourished, 121 were frail + anemic + malnourished, and 2755 were not frail. RAI-rev (aOR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.45–2.35), anemia (aOR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.45–2.35), and malnourishment (aOR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.69–3.24) were independent predictors of extended LOS. RAI-rev (aOR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04–1.11) and anemia (aOR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.66–2.61) were associated with an increased risk of 30-day AEs. RAI-rev and malnutrition were independent predictors of NRD (RAI-rev: aOR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.06–1.16; Malnutrition: aOR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.08–2.29) and 30-day mortality (RAI-rev: aOR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04–1.17; Malnutrition: aOR: 3.79, 95% CI: 1.24–11.60). Based on ROC analysis, RAI-rev + anemic + malnourished was a superior predictor of LOS and 30-day AEs (both p < 0.001). Compared to RAI-rev, RAI-rev + anemic superiorly predicted LOS and 30-day AEs, and RAI-rev + malnutrition superiorly predicted LOS (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results reveal RAI-rev combined with malnutrition and anemia superiorly predicts 30-day AEs and LOS in postoperative ASD patients. Future studies should investigate the feasibility and efficacy of these models for perioperative risk stratification and optimized recovery planning to improve outcomes for ASD patients. Full article

Problems with primary food production (food insecurity, malnutrition, and socioeconomic problems) persist throughout the world, especially in rural areas. Despite these problems, the available natural food resources are underutilized; residents are no longer interested in growing and consuming foods native to their region. In this regard, this study carries out the morphological and nutritional characterization of a native sunflower (Helianthus annuus) grown in the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, Mexico, known as “Maíz de teja”, to implement a sustainable monoculture production system. The results were compared with some other sunflower varieties and other oilseeds grown and consumed in the country. This study determined that this native sunflower seed is a good source of linoleic acid (84.98%) and zinc (17.2 mg/100 g). It is an alternative protein source (18.6 g/100 g), comparable to foods of animal origin. It also provides a good amount of fiber (22.6 g/100 g) and bioactive compounds (total phenolic compounds (TPC) 3.434 ± 0.03 mg/g and total flavonoids (TFC) 0.67 ± 0.02 mg/g), and seed yield 341.13 kg/ha. This study demonstrated a valuable nutritional profile of this native seed and its potential for cultivation. Further research is needed to improve agricultural management to contribute to food security and improve the socioeconomic status of the community. Full article

The etiology of schizophrenia remains poorly understood. Although certain risk factors have been identified, effective preventive measures are still lacking. This study investigates potential preventive methods while focusing on the role of vitamin D and its status. The role of malnutrition in schizophrenia risk was first identified in studies on the Dutch Hunger Winter. Vitamin D deficiency was hypothesized as a contributing factor shortly thereafter. This review aims to explore the correlations between vitamin D deficiency at various life stages (maternal, neonatal, adult) and schizophrenia risk, as well as its effects on pharmacokinetics, neurobiology, bone health, and metabolic syndrome. The studies were retrieved from two indexed databases, PubMed and Web of Science, following PRISMA guidelines and included studies published between 2000 and 2024. No correlation was found between maternal vitamin D levels and schizophrenia in offspring while a positive correlation was observed between low neonatal vitamin D levels and schizophrenia in later life. Approximately half of the studies on adults reported mean vitamin D concentrations of below 20 ng/mL which were negatively correlated with gray matter volume and bone health while positively correlated with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, vitamin D levels were also found to correlate with antipsychotic drug concentrations. Full article

Dietary protein is an essential macronutrient derived from both plant and animal sources required for muscle building, immune function, and wound healing. However, in the United States, protein consumption worsens as individuals age, with 30% of men and 50% of women over 71 consuming inadequate dietary protein due to a variety of factors, including changes in gut function, loss of appetite, tooth loss, financial concerns, and social isolation. The aim of this review is to underscore the need for increased protein requirements in aging populations, highlight potential barriers, synthesize these protein requirements, and also recommend strategies to meet these increased protein needs. Achieving adequate protein status, especially when facing chronic or acute health concerns, is essential to promote muscle and bone strength (because aging is associated with significant decreases in postprandial muscle protein synthesis), to support immune health (due to immunosenescence), and to maintain a good quality of life. For older adults, the literature suggests that a dietary protein intake of at least 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day is required in healthy, aging populations, and intakes of 1.2–1.5 g/kg/day are necessary for those with chronic or acute conditions. These protein intake recommendations can increase to 2.0 g/kg/day in more severe cases of illness, malnutrition, and chronic conditions. The reviewed literature also suggests that evenly balanced protein distributions of 25–30 g of dietary protein (0.4 g/kg) per meal from animal and plant protein sources alike are sufficient to maximize muscle protein synthesis (MPS) rates in older populations. Additionally, pre-sleep protein feeds of 40 g/night may be another strategy to improve daily MPS and amino acid utilization. Full article

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease with a relatively high incidence in the pediatric population. Anti-seizure medication (ASM) may cause adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which may occur repeatedly. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the recurrence of ADRs caused by ASMs over a period of 122 months in hospitalized Mexican pediatric epilepsy patients. The patients were under monotherapy or polytherapy treatment, with valproic acid (VPA), phenytoin (PHT), and levetiracetam (LEV), among others. A total of 313 patients met the inclusion criteria: 211 experienced ADRs, whereas 102 did not. Patient sex, age, seizure type, nutritional status and related drugs were considered explanatory variables. Methods: Four statistical models were used to analyze recurrent events that were defined as “one or more ADRs occurred on a single day”, considering both the classification of ADR seriousness and the ASM causing the ADR. Results: A total of 499 recurrence events were identified. The recurrence risk was significantly greater among younger patients for both nonsevere and severe ADRs and among those with focal seizures for nonsevere ADRs. Interestingly, malnutrition was negatively associated with the risk of nonsevere ADRs, and obesity was positively associated with the risk of severe ADRs. Finally, LEV was associated with a significantly greater risk of causing nonsevere ADRs than VPA. However, LEV significantly reduced the risk of severe ADRs compared with VPA, and PHT increased the risk in comparison with VPA. In conclusion, this study offers a robust clinical tool to predict risk factors for the presence and recurrence of ASM-ADRs in pediatric patients with epilepsy. Full article

Malnutrition and Frailty as Independent Predictors of Adverse Outcomes in Hospitalized Older Adults: A Prospective Single Center Study

Background and Objectives: Adverse clinical outcomes are associated with malnutrition and frailty, which are highly prevalent among hospitalized older patients. This study aimed to evaluate their predictive value for the duration of hospitalization, short-term survival, and rehospitalization of patients admitted to internal medicine wards. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study included 134 acutely ill patients aged ≥50 years who were hospitalized in an internal medicine department and evaluated within the first 48 h of admission. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini nutritional assessment–short form (MNA-SF), Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002), and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. Frailty was evaluated using the FRAIL scale and Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). The primary outcomes were prolonged hospitalization (>10 days), mortality, and rehospitalization at 3 and 6 months post-discharge. Results: According to MNA-SF, 33.6% of patients were malnourished; 44% had nutritional risk per NRS-2002, and 44.8% were malnourished per GLIM. Frailty prevalence was 53.7% (FRAIL) and 59% (CFS). Malnutrition defined by all three scales (MNA-SF, NRS-2002, GLIM) was significantly associated with prolonged hospitalization (p = 0.043, 0.014, and 0.023, respectively), increased rehospitalization at both 3 months (p < 0.001) and 6 months (p < 0.001). Mortality was also significantly higher among malnourished patients. Higher CFS scores and low handgrip strength were additional predictors of adverse outcomes (p < 0.05). In multivariable analysis, GLIM-defined malnutrition and CFS remained independent predictors of rehospitalization and mortality. Conclusions: Frailty and malnutrition are highly prevalent and independently associated with prolonged hospital stay, short-term rehospitalization and mortality. Routine screening at admission may facilitate early identification and guide timely interventions to improve patient outcomes. These findings might guide hospital protocols in aging health systems and support the development of standardized geriatric care pathways. Full article

Background: Malnutrition and cancer-related fatigue (CRF) are prevalent in cancer patients, significantly impacting prognosis and quality of life. Oral nutritional supplements (ONSs) enriched with protein and ω-3 fatty acids may improve nutritional status and mitigate CRF. This study evaluates the effects of a high-protein, fish oil-enriched ONS (FOHP-ONS) on nutritional intake, body composition, fatigue, and quality of life in malnourished cancer patients. Methods: Cancer patients with malnutrition or inadequate food intake received 8 weeks of FOHP-ONS (2 cans/day, providing 4.2 g/day of ω-3 fatty acids). Dietary intake, body weight, handgrip strength, serum biochemical markers, nutritional status (PG-SGA), fatigue (BFI-T), and quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) were assessed at baseline, week 4, and week 8. Results: Of the 33 enrolled patients, 30 completed the study. Energy and protein intake significantly increased (p < 0.05), and body BMI and handgrip strength showed significant improvements (p < 0.05), while muscle mass did not change significantly. Nutritional status, assessed by PG-SGA, improved, with the proportion of severely malnourished patients (Stage C) decreasing from 46.7% to 13.3%, and moderately malnourished patients (Stage B) improving to well-nourished status (Stage A) from 10.0% to 30.0% (p < 0.001). Serum albumin levels increased significantly (p < 0.05), while fasting blood glucose significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Additionally, triglyceride levels significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while total cholesterol and LDL-C showed a downward trend. Cancer-related fatigue scores improved across all domains (p < 0.05), and quality of life significantly increased, particularly in physical and role functioning (p < 0.05). Conclusions: FOHP-ONS supplementation improved nutritional intake, body composition, and muscle strength while alleviating CRF and enhancing quality of life in malnourished cancer patients. These findings support its potential role in nutritional intervention for malnourished cancer patients. Full article

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of >10 fluid-filled cysts in the liver. While PLD can occur in isolation, it is most commonly associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, adding complexity to its management. PLD is often asymptomatic but can lead to hepatomegaly, causing symptoms such as abdominal distension, pain and discomfort, early satiety, gastroesophageal reflux, and malnutrition, ultimately affecting patients’ quality of life. Current treatment strategies, including pharmacological and interventional approaches, focus on reducing liver volume and alleviating symptoms. However, management remains largely symptomatic, as no definitive therapies exist to halt cyst progression. Liver transplantation is the only curative option for patients with severe, progressive disease and refractory complications. The EASL guidelines recognize that PLD-related symptoms, primarily due to hepatomegaly, can contribute to involuntary weight loss and recommend assessing symptomatic patients for malnutrition and sarcopenia. Although evidence suggests that patients with PLD may be at risk of malnutrition, original data on the quality and extent of nutritional alterations remain scarce. The potential influence of nutrition on disease progression, symptom burden, and overall well-being is also largely unexplored. Given these knowledge gaps, addressing nutritional challenges, such as early satiety, is essential for optimizing symptom management and maintaining overall nutritional status. This review outlines a possible pathophysiology of malnutrition, specific dietary considerations and recommendations, and weight management in patients with PLD. Additionally, dietary complexities in patients with concurrent renal involvement are discussed, offering a practical framework for clinicians and dietitians in managing this challenging condition. Background: Prematurely born newborns with low birth weight constitute a group of patients who require special care from the first days of life. Prematurity and low birth weight affect about 13.4 million infants. Risk factors include placental disorders but also factors related to the mother, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, drug use, malnutrition, or certain diseases. It is imperative to educate women of reproductive age (15–49) about the basic factors influencing embryonic development, such as oral health, diet, medicine intake, and harmful habits. Even though most women are aware of the negative impact of harmful habits on the fetus, still too little attention is paid to oral health in pregnant women. Poor oral health may influence the well-being of the future mother, as well as of the child. Therefore, women of reproductive age and those who are pregnant must have adequate knowledge on this subject. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of Polish women of reproductive age (15–49) regarding oral health during pregnancy, including the impact of dental treatment, oral hygiene, and maternal oral conditions on pregnancy outcomes and the health of the newborn. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 508 women, in the reproductive age, whose age ranged from 18 to 49 years old. The surveys were conducted from April 2020 to November 2020. The questionnaire was originally developed based on the available literature and consisted of seven sections: basic information, general health and habits, pregnancy status and dental care, knowledge of treatment options during pregnancy, oral health status and its association with the risk of preterm birth, prematurity and the child’s oral health, and breastfeeding and oral development. Results: After excluding incomplete questionnaires, a total of 499 questionnaires were included in the analysis. Women participating in the study had a fairly good understanding of the impact of oral health on the fetus and the role of breastfeeding in the development of the stomatognathic system (from 50% to 70% correct answers). However, even though most respondents had completed higher education (344/68.94%), their knowledge of oral health, preterm birth, and low birth weight was very limited (including the impact of inflammation on the intrauterine development of the child or bacteria and transfer across the placenta). In these sections, the percentage of correct answers ranged from less than 20% to 50%. When analyzing knowledge by age, education, number of births, and place of residence, the highest levels of knowledge were observed among respondents with higher education, particularly those aged 27–32. Conclusions: Respondents had a fairly good understanding of the general impact of oral health during pregnancy and recognition of the importance of breastfeeding for infants. However, their knowledge about the impact of bacteria and inflammation in the mother’s oral cavity on prematurity and low birth weight was limited. Therefore, educating women of reproductive age and pregnant women on this topic is essential, as it may help reduce the adverse consequences of prematurity. Full article
