This paper presents a resilient and energy-efficient framework for jamming mitigation in cluster-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), addressing a critical vulnerability in hostile or interference-prone environments. The proposed approa ch integrates dynamic cluster reorganization, adaptive MAC-layer behavior, and multipath routing strategies to restore communication capabilities and sustain network functionality under jamming conditions. The framework is evaluated across heterogeneous topologies using Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE); both stacks were validated in a physical testbed with matched jammer and traffic conditions, while simulation was used solely to tune parameters and support sensitivity analyses. Results demonstrate significant improvements in Packet Delivery Ratio, end-to-end delay, energy consumption, and retransmission rate, with BLE showing particularly high resilience when combined with the mitigation mechanism. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of routing protocols including AODV, GAF, and LEACH reveals that hierarchical protocols achieve superior performance when integrated with the proposed method. This framework has broader applicability in mission-critical IoT domains, including environmental monitoring, industrial automation, and healthcare systems. The findings confirm that the framework offers a scalable and protocol-agnostic defense mechanism, with potential applicability in mission-critical and interference-sensitive IoT deployments. WSNs consist of numerous energy-constrained Sensor Nodes (SNs), making energy efficiency a critical challenge. This paper presents a novel multipath routing model designed to enhance network lifetime by simultaneously optimizing energy consumption, node connectivity, and transmission distance. The model employs an Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) algorithm to dynamically determine the optimal weight coefficients of a cost function that integrates three parameters: residual energy, link reliability, and buffer capacity. A compressed Bloom filter is incorporated to improve packet transmission efficiency and reduce error rates. Simulation experiments conducted in the NS2 environment show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms existing protocols, including Reinforcement Learning Q-Routing Protocol (RL-QRP), Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchical (LEACH), On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Secure and Energy-Efficient Multipath (SEEM), and Energy Density On-demand Cluster Routing (EDOCR), achieving a 7.45% reduction in energy consumption and maintaining a higher number of active nodes over time. Notably, the model sustains 19 live nodes at round 800, whereas LEACH and APTEEN experience complete node depletion by that point. This adaptive, energy-aware routing strategy improves reliability, prolongs operational lifespan, and enhances load balancing, making it a promising solution for real-world WSN applications. This article presents a study of the energy efficiency of a wireless sensor network for measuring the main physicochemical parameters of soil. The main physicochemical parameters of soil are measured—acidity and electrical conductivity. The study on the transmission of measured data on the main soil parameters is conducted through simulation, with program modules developed in the MATLAB environment. Four main protocols for data routing are studied—the LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy), EAMMH (Energy-Aware Multi-Hop Multi-Path Hierarchical), SEP (Stable Election Protocol for clustered heterogeneous WSN), and TEEN (Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient Network). The results of the main energy indicators are obtained and a comparative analysis of the two protocols is carried out. The results obtained show that the SEP and TEEN routing protocols have better performance and efficiency with respect to inactive nodes in the network compared to the other two protocols. The EAMMH and LEACH routing protocols are the best in terms of the energy consumption by sensors in the network. Full article

Wireless Sensor Networks are formed by tiny, self-contained, battery-powered computers with radio links that can sense their surroundings for events of interest and store and process the sensed data. Sensor nodes wirelessly communicate with each other to relay information to a central base station. Energy consumption is the most critical parameter in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Network lifespan is directly influenced by the energy consumption of the sensor nodes. All sensors in the network send and receive data from the base station (BS) using different routing protocols and algorithms. These routing protocols use two main types of clustering: hierarchical clustering and flat clustering. Consequently, effective clustering within Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) protocols is essential for establishing secure connections among nodes, ensuring a stable network lifetime. This paper introduces a novel approach to improve energy efficiency, reduce the length of network connections, and increase network lifetime in heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks by employing the K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) algorithm to optimise node selection and clustering mechanisms for four protocols: Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), Stable Election Protocol (SEP), Threshold-sensitive Energy Efficient sensor Network (TEEN), and Distributed Energy-efficient Clustering (DEC). Simulation results obtained using MATLAB (R2024b) demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed K-Nearest Neighbours algorithm, revealing that the modified protocols achieve shorter distances between cluster heads and nodes, reduced energy consumption, and improved network lifetime compared to the original protocols. The proposed KNN-based approach enhances the network’s operational efficiency and security, offering a robust solution for energy management in WSNs. Full article

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been adopted in various environmental pollution monitoring applications. As an important environmental field, water quality monitoring is a vital process to ensure the sustainable, important feeding of and as a life-maintaining source for many living creatures. To conduct this process efficiently, the integration of lightweight machine learning technologies can extend its efficacy and accuracy. WSNs often suffer from energy-limited devices and resource-affected operations, thus constraining WSNs’ lifetime and capability. Energy-efficient clustering protocols have been introduced to tackle this challenge. The low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is widely used due to its simplicity and ability to manage large datasets and prolong network lifetime. In this paper, we investigate and present a modified LEACH-based clustering algorithm in conjunction with a K-means data clustering approach to enable efficient decision making based on water-quality-monitoring-related operations. This study is operated based on the experimental measurements of lanthanide oxide nanoparticles, selected as cerium oxide nanoparticles (ceria NPs), as an active sensing host for the optical detection of hydrogen peroxide pollutants via a fluorescence quenching mechanism. A mathematical model is proposed for the K-means LEACH-based clustering algorithm for WSNs to analyze the quality monitoring process in water, where various levels of pollutants exist. The simulation results show the efficacy of our modified K-means-based hierarchical data clustering and routing in prolonging network lifetime when operated in static and dynamic contexts. Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a viable solution for data collection from remote Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, the successful implementation in this regard necessitates the development of a reliable and energy-efficient routing protocol. This paper proposes a reliable and an energy-efficient UAV-assisted clustering hierarchical (EEUCH) protocol designed for remote wireless sensor networks (WSNs) based IoT applications. The proposed EEUCH routing protocol facilitates UAVs to collect data from ground sensor nodes (SNs) that are equipped with wake-up radios (WuRs) and deployed remotely from the base station (BS) in the field of interest (FoI). During each round of the EEUCH protocol, the UAVs arrive at the predefined hovering positions at the FoI, perform clear channel assignment, and broadcast wake-up calls (WuCs) to the SNs. Upon receiving the WuCs by the SNs’ wake-up receivers, the SNs perform carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance before sending joining requests to ensure reliability and cluster-memberships with the particular UAV whose WuC is received. The cluster-member SNs turn on their main radios (MRs) for data packet transmission. The UAV assigns time division multiple access (TDMA) slots to each of its cluster-member SNs whose joining request is received. Each SN must send the data packets in its assigned TDMA slot. When data packets are successfully received by the UAV, it sends acknowledgments to the SNs, after which the SNs turn off their MRs, completing a single round of the protocol. The proposed EEUCH routing protocol with WuR eliminates the issue of cluster overlapping, improves the overall performance, and increases network stability time by a factor of 8.7. It also improves energy efficiency by a factor of 12.55, resulting in a longer network lifespan compared to Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. Moreover, EEUCH collects 5.05 times more data from the FoI than LEACH. These results are based on simulations in which the EEUCH protocol outperformed the existing six benchmark routing protocols proposed for homogeneous, two-tier, and three-tier heterogeneous WSNs. A Flying Ad-hoc network constitutes many sensor nodes with limited processing speed and storage capacity as they institute a minor battery-driven device with a limited quantity of energy. One of the primary roles of the sensor node is to store and transmit the collected information to the base station (BS). Thus, the life span of the network is the main criterion for the efficient design of the FANETS Network, as sensor nodes always have limited resources. In this paper, we present a methodology of an energy-efficient clustering algorithm for collecting and transmitting data based on the Optimized Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. The selection of CH is grounded on the new optimized threshold function. In contrast, LEACH is a hierarchical routing protocol that randomly selects cluster head nodes in a loop and results in an increased cluster headcount, but also causes more rapid power consumption. Thus, we have to circumvent these limitations by improving the LEACH Protocol. Our proposed algorithm diminishes the energy usage for data transmission in the routing protocol, and the network’s lifetime is enhanced as it also maximizes the residual energy of nodes. The experimental results performed on MATLAB yield better performance than the existing LEACH and Centralized Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy Protocol in terms of energy efficiency per unit node and the packet delivery ratio with less energy utilization. In addition, the First Node Death (FND) is also meliorated when compared to the LEACH and LEACH-C protocols. Full article

Efficient energy utilization and network life prolongation are primary objectives to be considered when designing a Wireless Sensor Network. Cluster-based routing protocols are most suitable for achieving such goals. Energy and Optimal Inter Cluster Head Distance (EOICHD) is a cluster-based hierarchical routing protocol inspired by the Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. EOICHD resolves the problems associated with LEACH protocol, such as selecting cluster head nodes in close proximity. By carefully selecting the cluster head nodes based on residual energy and optimal inter-cluster head distance, EOICHD ensures that selected cluster head nodes are separated by a certain optimal distance. This approach ensures uniform distribution of cluster head nodes across the entire network. The study of the EOICHD protocol presented so far is not sufficient. Hence, in this paper, we propose three variants of EOICHD protocol to understand its behavior in a better manner. A comparative analysis of all three EOICHD variants, LEACH and LEACH-central constrained (LEACH-C) protocol, is performed by considering comparative parameters such as alive nodes, cumulative network energy, data packets arrived at the base station, and stability of the network. Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) is a typical routing protocol that effectively reduces transmission energy consumption by forming a hierarchical structure between nodes. LEACH on Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has been widely studied in the recent decade as one key technique for the Internet of Things (IoT). The main aims of the autonomous things, and one of advanced of IoT, is that it creates a flexible environment that enables movement and communication between objects anytime, anywhere, by saving computing power and utilizing efficient wireless communication capability. However, the existing LEACH method is only based on the model with a static topology, but a case for a disposable sensor is included in an autonomous thing’s environment. With the increase of interest in disposable sensors which constantly change their locations during the operation, dynamic topology changes should be considered in LEACH. This study suggests the probing model for randomly moving nodes, implementing a change in the position of a node depending on the environment, such as strong winds. In addition, as a method to quickly adapt to the change in node location and construct a new topology, we propose Q-learning LEACH based on Q-table reinforcement learning and Fuzzy-LEACH based on Fuzzifier method. Then, we compared the results of the dynamic and static topology model with existing LEACH on the aspects of energy loss, number of alive nodes, and throughput. By comparison, all types of LEACH showed sensitivity results on the dynamic location of each node, while Q-LEACH shows best performance of all. Full article

The continuous evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) makes it possible to connect everyday objects to networks in order to monitor physical and environmental conditions, which is made possible due to wireless sensor networks (WSN) that enable the transfer of data. However, it has also brought about many challenges that need to be addressed, such as excess energy consumption. Accordingly, this paper presents and analyzes wireless network energy models using five different communication protocols: Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Multi-Parent Hierarchical (MPH), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and Zigbee Tree Routing (ZTR). First, a series of metrics are defined to establish a comparison and determine which protocol exhibits the best energy consumption performance. Then, simulations are performed and the results are compared with real scenarios. The energy analysis is conducted with three proposed sleeping algorithms: Modified Sleeping Crown (MSC), Timer Sleeping Algorithm (TSA), and Local Energy Information (LEI). Thereafter, the proposed algorithms are compared by virtue of two widely used wireless technologies, namely Zigbee and WiFi. Indeed, the results suggest that Zigbee has a better energy performance than WiFi, but less redundancy in the topology links, and this study favors the analysis with the simulation of protocols with different nature. The tested scenario is implemented into a university campus to show a real network running. Full article

With the continuous development of wireless communication technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) is being used in a wide range of fields. The IoT collects and exchanges large amounts of data with objects, either tangible or intangible, such as sensors or physical devices, connected to the Internet. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are components of IoT systems. WSNs are used in various IoT systems, such as monitoring, tracking, and detection systems, to extract relevant information and deliver it to users. WSNs consist of sensor nodes with low power, low cost, and multiple functions. Because sensor nodes have limited resources, such as power and memory, a reduction in the energy efficiency of the sensor nodes in WSNs will lead to a decrease in wireless network performance and an increase in packet loss, which affects IoT system performance. Therefore, this study aimed to find an energy-efficient routing method that extends the lifetime of WSNs by minimizing the battery use of sensor nodes to improve the network performance of IoT systems. Conserving energy from sensor nodes and increasing network throughput in WSNs involves having protocols. The low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH ) protocol is a well-known hierarchical routing protocol in WSNs that constructs clusters and transmits data. LEACH increases energy efficiency by transmitting data from sensor nodes to the base station (BS) through the cluster head. It is widely adopted in the WSN network field, and many protocols are being studied to improve cluster header selection and data transmission to increase the energy efficiency of sensor nodes. In this study, we attempted to improve energy efficiency by removing unnecessary energy from LEACH. In LEACH, when the sensor node is located between the BS and the cluster head, the sensor node transmits data to the cluster head in the opposite direction of the BS. The data sent to the cluster head are transmitted in the direction of the BS. Thus, transmission in the opposite direction consumes unnecessary energy and affects the WSN performance of IoT systems. In this study, we propose a D-LEACH (direction-based LEACH) protocol based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) that improves the efficiency of transmission energy considering the data transmission direction of sensor nodes. D-LEACH aims to balance the energy of the sensor nodes and improve the performance of WSNs in the IoT system by reducing unnecessary energy consumption caused by reverse transmission considering the data transmission direction of the sensor nodes. In the course of the paper, we refer to the routing protocol of WSNs to improve network performance and describe LEACH. We also explain the D-LEACH protocol proposed in this paper and confirm the performance improvement of WSNs in an IoT system through simulation. Full article

In this study, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) energy model is proposed by defining the energy consumption at each node. Such a model calculates the energy at each node by estimating the energy of the main functions developed at sensing and transmitting data when running the routing protocol. These functions are related to wireless communications and measured and compared to the most relevant impact on an energy standpoint and performance metrics. The energy model is validated using a Texas Instruments CC2530 system-on-chip (SoC), as a proof-of-concept. The proposed energy model is then used to calculate the energy consumption of a Multi-Parent Hierarchical (MPH) routing protocol and five widely known network sensors routing protocols: Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), ZigBee Tree Routing (ZTR), Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH), and Power Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems (PEGASIS). Experimental test-bed simulations were performed on a random layout topology with two collector nodes. Each node was running under different wireless technologies: Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy, and LoRa by WiFi. The objective of this work is to analyze the performance of the proposed energy model in routing protocols of diverse nature: reactive, proactive, hybrid and energy-aware. Experimental results show that the MPH routing protocol consumes 16%, 13%, and 5% less energy when compared to AODV, DSR, and ZTR, respectively; and it presents only 2% and 3% of greater energy consumption with respect to the energy-aware PEGASIS and LEACH protocols, respectively. The proposed model achieves a 97% accuracy compared to the actual performance of a network. Tests are performed to analyze the consumption of the main tasks of a node in a network. Full article

Cluster-based hierarchical routing protocols play an essential role in decreasing the energy consumption of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) has been proposed as an application-specific protocol architecture for WSNs. However, without considering the distribution of the cluster heads (CHs) in the rotation basis, the LEACH protocol will increase the energy consumption of the network. To improve the energy efficiency of the WSN, we propose a novel modified routing protocol in this paper. The newly proposed improved energy-efficient LEACH (IEE-LEACH) protocol considers the residual node energy and the average energy of the networks. To achieve satisfactory performance in terms of reducing the sensor energy consumption, the proposed IEE-LEACH accounts for the numbers of the optimal CHs and prohibits the nodes that are closer to the base station (BS) to join in the cluster formation. Furthermore, the proposed IEE-LEACH uses a new threshold for electing CHs among the sensor nodes, and employs single hop, multi-hop, and hybrid communications to further improve the energy efficiency of the networks. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with some existing routing protocols, the proposed protocol substantially reduces the energy consumption of WSNs. Full article

The low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) is the classical hierarchical topology control algorithm and still widely used today in wireless sensor networks. There are some problems in LEACH such us an unreasonable selection and uneven distribution of cluster heads, not considering the residual energy of nodes, the cluster head is overloaded and there is a high energy consumption of data transmission. In this paper, a topology control algorithm with double cluster heads and multi-hop based on affinity propagation clustering (APDC-M) was proposed. In APDC-M, firstly, a cluster head election algorithm with double choices based on the affinity propagation clustering algorithm (AP) and reference node strategy (APDC) was proposed. APDC is responsible to elect the fusion cluster head for node clustering. Secondly, a forwarding cluster head is elected within each cluster. The forwarding cluster head is responsible for the data transmission in order to reduce the energy consumption of a single cluster head. Lastly, the forwarding cluster heads complete the data transmission from a cluster to the base station by the shortest path inter-cluster multi-hop mode. The comparison simulation results show that APDC-M can make the cluster head election more reasonable and the cluster head distribution more uniform, and effectively reduce the energy consumption of the cluster head nodes when transmitting data, thus prolonging the network life. A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a modern technology in radio communication. A WSN comprises a number of sensors that are randomly spread in a specific area for sensing and monitoring physical attributes that are difficult to monitor by humans, such as temperature, humidity, and pressure. Many problems, including data routing, power consumption, clustering, and selecting cluster heads (CHs), may occur due to the nature of WSNs. Various protocols have been conducted to resolve these issues. One of the important hierarchical protocols that are used to reduce power consumption in WSNs is low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH). This paper presents a comprehensive study of clustering protocols for WSNs that are relevant to LEACH. This paper is the first to emphasis on cluster formation and CHs selection methods and their strengths and weaknesses.
