Background: Emotional abuse is both prevalent and underrecognized particularly in culturally complex settings like India. Adolescents, being in a critical developmental phase, are especially vulnerable to the long-lasting psychological effects of emotional abuse. This qualitative literature review aims to synthesize findings from primary studies that explore the lived experiences of emotional abuse among Indian adolescents and identify emerging patterns across sociocultural contexts. Method: Electronic databases, including DOAJ, Google Scholar, ProQuest, JSTOR, Pubmed, PsycNet, and SCOPUS, were searched for peer-reviewed articles published in English up to March 2025. Inclusion criteria comprised qualitative or mixed-methods research focusing on emotional abuse among adolescents aged 12–20 in Indian contexts. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was used for quality assessment. Results: Five major thematic domains were identified across the included studies: (1) Family as a primary site of emotional abuse; (2) Gendered experiences of abuse; (3) Cultural normalization and silence; (4) Psychological and emotional consequences; and (5) Coping and resilience among adolescents. These themes reflect shared experiences of emotional abuse shaped by cultural, familial, and gender-based expectations. Conclusions: This review highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and culturally sensitive interventions addressing emotional abuse in Indian adolescents. The findings suggest that parents, educators, and policymakers must recognize emotionally harmful behaviors and implement prevention-oriented strategies, particularly through non-violent communication and adolescent mental health support frameworks. Background: The relationship between spleen and bone marrow stiffness, and other features of abnormal myeloproliferation has long been described. However, the scientific knowledge in this area remains very superficial. This review evaluated the diagnostic effectiveness of various ultrasound (US) methods in the assessment of neoplastic myeloproliferation using spleen stiffness measurement (SSM). Aim: To explore the diagnostic accuracy of US techniques in assessing spleen stiffness, determining which of them may be suitable for the diagnosis of myeloproliferative diseases in adults. Methods: The review included original retrospective or prospective studies published in the last five years (2019–2024) in peer-reviewed medical journals that reported receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) for SSM and the articles concerning the relation between SSM values and neoplastic myeloproliferation. The studies were identified through PubMed searches on 1 July and 1 December 2024. Quality was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. Results were tabulated according to the diagnostic method separately for myeloproliferative neoplasms (MNs) and for other clinical findings. Results: The review included 52 studies providing ROCs for SSM or compatibility between operators, and five studies covering the relation between SSM values and MNs. Conclusions: Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI), two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), transient elastography (TE), and point shear wave elastography (p-SWE) are promising methods for measuring SSM that can be incorporated into the diagnosis, screening, and monitoring system in MNs. Introduction: Long COVID syndrome is defined as persistent or new symptoms that appear after an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and last at least three months without explanation. It is estimated that between 10% and 20% of those infected develop long COVID; however, data is not precise in Latin America. Although high immunization rates have reduced acute symptoms and the pandemic’s impact, there is a lack of evidence of its efficacy in preventing long COVID in the region. Methods: This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Studies on vaccinated adults with long COVID from Central and South America and the Caribbean were included (Mexico was also considered). A comprehensive search across multiple databases was conducted. Data included study design, participant characteristics, vaccine type, and efficacy outcomes. Results are presented narratively and in tables. Results: Out of 3466 initial records, 8 studies met the inclusion criteria after rigorous selection processes. These studies encompassed populations from Brazil, Mexico, Latin America, and Bonaire, with 11,333 participants, 69.3% of whom were female. Vaccination, particularly with three or more doses, substantially reduces the risk and duration of long COVID. Variability was noted in the definitions and outcomes assessed across studies. Conclusions: This scoping review highlights that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination exhibits potential in reducing the burden of long COVID in the Americas. However, discrepancies in vaccine efficacy were observed depending on the study design, the population studied, and the vaccine regimen employed. Further robust, region-specific investigations are warranted to delineate the effects of vaccination on long COVID outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives. Previous research with extremely and very preterm children indicates that these children obtain significantly lower results in executive functions (EFs) and in reading skills than full-term (FT) children. The comparison results do not seem to be so clear when other PT children in lower-risk conditions are studied. Many studies with typically developing and preterm (PT) children indicate that reading ability is determined, in part, by EFs. Therefore, the study of EFs and reading and their relationships in low-risk PT children is pertinent. Methods. In the present study, 111 PT children, classified into three groups with different ranges of gestational age (GA), and one group of 34 FT children participated in a longitudinal study, carried out from 4 to 9 years of age. The results obtained from the four groups in different EFs measured at 4, 5, and 8 years of age, and in reading skills at 9 years of age were compared. The possible effects of EFs on reading skills were studied through multiple linear regression analyses. Results. The results obtained indicate that no significant difference was found between FT children and any of the GA groups of PT children, either in EFs or reading skills. The effect of EFs on reading skills was low to moderate. Verbal and non-verbal working memory had a positive significant effect on decoding skills (letter names, same–different, and word reading), but not on reading comprehension processes. Higher-order EFs (cognitive flexibility and planning), as well as inhibitory control, showed positive effects on reading comprehension skills. The effects of the different EFs varied depending on the reading process. Conclusions. In conclusion, low-risk PT children do not differ from FT children in their competence in EFs or reading skills. There are long-lasting effects of EFs, measured several years before, on reading skills measured at 9 years of age. Full article

Chloride ion penetration is one of the most aggressive threats to reinforced concrete, as it triggers the electrochemical corrosion of steel reinforcement, compromising structural integrity and durability. Chloride ingress occurs through the porous structure of concrete, making permeability control crucial for enhancing structural longevity. Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) is widely used to improve durability; however, the effects of different fiber types on chloride resistance remain unclear. This study examines the influence of glass and polypropylene fibers on concrete’s microstructure and chloride penetration resistance. Cylindrical specimens were prepared, including a reference mix without fibers and mixes with 0.25% and 0.50% fiber content by volume. Both fiber types were tested for chloride resistance. The accelerated non-steady-state migration method was employed to determine the resistance coefficients to chloride ion penetration, while X-ray macrofluorescence (MacroXRF) mapped the chlorine infiltration depth in the samples. Compressive strength decreased in all fiber-reinforced samples, with 0.50% glass fiber leading to a 56% reduction in strength. Nevertheless, the XRF results showed that a 0.25% fiber content significantly reduced chloride penetration, with polypropylene fibers outperforming glass fibers. These findings highlight the critical role of fiber type and volume in improving concrete durability, offering insights for designing long-lasting FRC structures in chloride-rich environments. First-generation students can experience a cultural mismatch between their values and those that colleges and universities tend to prioritize. This mismatch can increase cognitive load, leaving fewer resources available for learning. Effective and long-lasting learning requires actively processing new information and connecting it to existing knowledge—an effort that demands significant cognitive resources. Value affirmation exercises, where students select and reflect upon values that are important to them, have shown promise in reducing cultural mismatch and improving performance on cognitive tasks. However, the impact of these exercises on the learning and recall of new information is less clear. The current study investigated whether a value affirmation exercise, completed before reading an educational passage, would improve memory recall for that passage in a sample of 400 first-generation and continuing-generation young adults, as compared to not affirming. Our results failed to provide evidence that value affirmation exercises impacted recall performance, regardless of whether participants affirmed independent values, interdependent values, or both. Given the importance and implications of this outcome for student learning, we discuss possible explanations for these null findings and suggest future directions in affirmation research. Brain–computer interface (BCI) technology holds promise for improving motor rehabilitation in stroke patients. This review explores the immediate and long-term effects of BCI training, shedding light on the potential benefits and challenges. Clinical studies have demonstrated that BCIs yield significant immediate improvements in motor functions following stroke. Patients can engage in BCI training safely, making it a viable option for rehabilitation. Evidence from single-group studies consistently supports the effectiveness of BCIs in enhancing patients’ performance. Despite these promising findings, the evidence regarding long-term effects remains less robust. Further studies are needed to determine whether BCI-induced changes are permanent or only last for short durations. While evaluating the outcomes of BCI, one must consider that different BCI training protocols may influence functional recovery. The characteristics of some of the paradigms that we discuss are motor imagery-based BCIs, movement-attempt-based BCIs, and brain-rhythm-based BCIs. Finally, we examine studies suggesting that integrating BCIs with other devices, such as those used for functional electrical stimulation, has the potential to enhance recovery outcomes. We conclude that, while BCIs offer immediate benefits for stroke rehabilitation, addressing long-term effects and optimizing clinical implementation remain critical areas for further investigation. Chemotherapeutic agents and radiotherapy are highly effective in treating malignancies. However, they carry a significant risk of harming the gonads and may lead to endocrine dysfunction and reproductive issues. This review outlines the molecular mechanisms of gonadotoxic therapies, focusing on radiation, alkylating agents, and platinum compounds. It discusses the loss of PMFs due to gonadotoxic exposure, including DNA double-strand breaks, oxidative stress, and dysregulated signaling pathways like PI3K/PTEN/Akt/mTOR and TAp63-mediated apoptosis. Furthermore, it explores strategies to mitigate gonadal damage, including GnRH agonists, AMH, imatinib, melatonin, sphingolipid metabolites, G-CSF, mTOR inhibitors, AS101, and LH. These therapies, paired with existing fertility preservation methods, could safeguard reproductive and hormonal functions and improve the quality of life for young cancer patients. Despite the progress made in recent years in understanding gonadotoxic mechanisms, gaps remain due to questionable reliance on mouse models and the lack of models replicating human ovarian dynamics. Long-term studies are vital for wider analyses and exploration of protective strategies based on various animal models and clinical trials. It is essential to verify that these substances do not hinder the anti-cancer effectiveness of treatments or cause lasting DNA changes in granulosa cells, raising the risk of miscarriages and infertility. Dams play a vital role in securing water and electricity supplies for households and industry, and they contribute significantly to flood protection. Regular monitoring of dam deformations holds fundamental socio-economic and ecological importance. Traditionally, this has relied on time-consuming in situ techniques that offer either high spatial or temporal resolution. Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) addresses these limitations, enabling high-resolution monitoring in both domains. Sensors such as TerraSAR-X (TSX) and Sentinel-1 (S-1) have proven effective for deformation analysis with millimeter accuracy. Combining TSX and S-1 datasets enhances monitoring capabilities by leveraging the high spatial resolution of TSX with the broad coverage of S-1. This improves monitoring by increasing PS point density, reducing revisit intervals, and facilitating the detection of environmental deformation drivers. This study aims to investigate two objectives: first, we evaluate the benefits of a spatially and temporally densified PS time series derived from TSX and S-1 data for detecting radial deformations in individual dam segments. To support this, we developed the TSX2StaMPS toolbox, integrated into the updated snap2stamps workflow for generating single-master interferogram stacks using TSX data. Second, we identify deformation drivers using water level and temperature as exogenous variables. The five-year study period (2017–2022) was conducted on a gravity dam in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which was divided into logically connected segments. The results were compared to in situ data obtained from pendulum measurements. Linear models demonstrated a fair agreement between the combined time series and the pendulum data (R2 = 0.5; MAE = 2.3 mm). Temperature was identified as the primary long-term driver of periodic deformations of the gravity dam. Following the filling of the reservoir, the variance in the PS data increased from 0.9 mm to 3.9 mm in RMSE, suggesting that water level changes are more responsible for short-term variations in the SAR signal. Upon full impoundment, the mean deformation amplitude decreased by approximately 1.7 mm toward the downstream side of the dam, which was attributed to the higher water pressure. The last five meters of water level rise resulted in higher feature importance due to interaction effects with temperature. The study concludes that integrating multiple PS datasets for dam monitoring is beneficial particularly for dams where few PS points can be identified using one sensor or where pendulum systems are not installed. Identifying the drivers of deformation is feasible and can be incorporated into existing monitoring frameworks. Full article

Post-craniotomy pain is common yet often sub-optimally managed because systemic opioids can obscure postoperative neurologic examinations. The superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) has, therefore, emerged as a targeted regional anesthesia option for occipital craniotomies. The SCPB targets the C2–C4 nerves to anesthetize the occipital scalp region, covering the lesser occipital nerve territory that lies within typical posterior scalp incisions. Clinical evidence shows the block is effective in reducing acute postoperative pain after occipital craniotomy and diminishes opioid requirements. Studies have demonstrated successful and long-lasting analgesia, reductions in 24-h opioid consumption, and a lower incidence of severe pain. Moreover, the technique exhibits a low complication rate and is safer than a deep cervical plexus block because the injection remains superficial and avoids critical vascular and neural structures. When delivered under ultrasound guidance, major adverse events are exceedingly rare. By reducing opioid use, the SCPB can help reduce postoperative complications, allowing earlier neurological assessments and fewer opioid-related side effects. Incorporation of the SCPB into multimodal analgesia regimens can, therefore, accelerate postoperative recovery by providing regionally focused, opioid-sparing pain control without clinically significant sedation. Overall, current data support the SCPB as a dependable, well-tolerated, and clinically practical approach for managing post-craniotomy pain in patients undergoing occipital approaches. In this narrative review, we will discuss the mechanism of action and anatomy, the clinical application, safety and tolerability, patient outcomes, and emerging future directions of the superficial cervical plexus block and how it mitigates post-occipital craniotomy pain. Developmental exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are commonly used as flame retardants, results in irreversible cognitive impairments. Postnatal hippocampal neurogenesis, which occurs in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus, is critical for neuronal circuits and plasticity. Wnt7a-Frizzled5 (FZD5) is essential for both neurogenesis and synapse formation; moreover, Wnt signaling participates in PBDE neurotoxicity and also contributes to the neuroprotective effects of melatonin. Therefore, we investigated the impacts of perinatal decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) exposure on hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptogenesis in juvenile rats through BrdU injection and Golgi staining, as well as the alleviation of melatonin pretreatment. Additionally, we identified the structural basis of Wnt7a and two compounds via molecular docking. The hippocampal neural progenitor pool (Sox2+BrdU+ and Sox2+GFAP+cells), immature neurons (DCX+) differentiated from neuroblasts, and the survival of mature neurons (NeuN+) in the dentate gyrus were inhibited. Moreover, in BDE-209-exposed offspring rats, it was observed that dendritic branching and spine density were reduced, alongside the long-lasting suppression of the Wnt7a-FZD5/β-catenin pathway and targeted genes (Prox1, Neurod1, Neurogin2, Dlg4, and Netrin1) expression. Melatonin alleviated BDE-209-disrupted memory, along with hippocampal neurogenesis and dendritogenesis, for which the restoration of Wnt7a-FZD5 signaling may be beneficial. This study suggested that melatonin could represent a potential intervention for the cognitive deficits induced by PBDEs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (OETD) is common in adults and may lead to middle-ear conditions such as atelectasis and cholesteatoma. The ETDQ-7 questionnaire is used to assess symptom severity. Balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube (BDET) is a minimally invasive treatment with variable outcomes. This review evaluates the safety and effectiveness of BDET. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science) were searched using ETD- and BDET-related terms, with the last search on 11 April 2025. Randomized trials were selected based on predefined criteria, and data were extracted by two independent reviewers. Discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Results: This systematic review included 14 studies on BDET published between 2013 and 2025. BDET improved otoscopic findings, Valsalva maneuver (VM) performance, and tympanometry (TMM), particularly within the first 6 weeks. ETDQ-7 scores generally indicated symptom improvement, though pure tone audiometry (PTA) showed no significant changes. Most procedures were performed under general anesthesia, with some studies showing similar outcomes under local anesthesia. Combining BDET with other interventions produced mixed results. Reported complications were rare. Conclusions: BDET is a safe, low-risk procedure that effectively reduces tympanic membrane retraction and improves VM and TMM results. While it relieves ETD symptoms in many patients, evidence for long-term efficacy and impact on PTA is limited. Full article

Background/Objectives. Social and Emotional Education (SEE) interventions during early childhood have shown considerable promise in enhancing children’s emotion understanding, social competence, and behavioural adjustments. However, few studies have examined their long-term impact, especially across the preschool-to-primary school transition. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a manualized SEE program, Timmy’s Trip to Planet Earth, in promoting emotional, behavioural, and social functioning over time. Methods. A quasi-experimental longitudinal design was adopted with pre- and post-test assessments conducted approximately 18 months apart. Participants were 89 typically developing children (aged 59–71 months), assigned to an experimental group (n = 45) or a waiting-list group (n = 44). The program combined teacher training, classroom-based lessons, home activities, and teachers’ ongoing implementation support. The effectiveness of the program was measured via the Test of Emotion Comprehension (TEC), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation (SCBE-30). Results. Significant Time × Group interactions were observed for the TEC External and Mental components, indicating greater improvements in emotion recognition and mental state understanding in the intervention group. The SDQ revealed significant reductions in conduct problems and increased prosocial behaviours. In the SCBE-30, a significant interaction effect was found for social competence, with the intervention group showing greater improvement over time compared to the control group. Conclusions. The findings suggest that SEE programs can produce meaningful and lasting improvements in children’s emotional and social skills across key educational transitions. Teacher training and family involvement likely played a critical role in supporting the program’s sustained impact. Full article

Background: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) causes a global limitation of both active and passive range of motion (ROM) in the shoulder, with or without pain, and no specific radiographic findings. Its course is self-limiting and progresses through three or four stages. The diagnosis is primarily clinical, since imaging tests are nonspecific. Treatment options include physical therapy (PT), intra-articular corticosteroid injections, suprascapular nerve block (SSNB), and hydrodilatation (HD). The latter is useful for expanding and reducing inflammation of the joint capsule through the insufflation of saline solution, anesthetics, and corticosteroids. Objectives: To compare whether patients with AC, stratified by phase 1 and 2, who receive high-volume HD as treatment achieve better outcomes in terms of shoulder pain and function compared to patients who receive low-volume HD. To compare whether there are differences in PT times and to determine mean axillary recess (AR) values. Methods: A randomized, parallel-block, triple-blind clinical trial will be conducted in 64 patients with AC in phases 1 and 2, aged 30 to 70 years, with limited active and passive ROM in two planes, and shoulder pain lasting more than 3 months. HD will be administered with volumes of 20 mL or 40 mL, followed by a conventional rehabilitation program. Outcomes will be reviewed at the 1st, 3rd, and 6th months of HD. Variables collected will include Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Range of motion (ROM), Lattinen index (LI), AR size, and time to completion of PT. Results: HD has been gaining clinical relevance in interventional rehabilitation as a treatment for AC, although its medium- and long-term efficacy remains a matter of debate. The variability in the volumes used for capsular expansion, with studies ranging from 18 mL to 47 mL, is compounded by the fact that most of these studies do not differentiate between AC stages. This could influence treatment effectiveness. Furthermore, diagnosis remains a challenge since valid and specific diagnostic parameters are lacking. Conclusions: Understanding the differences between HD techniques, considering the influence of certain factors such as the volume used or the stages of AC, as well as improving diagnosis and the coordination of scientific work. This could facilitate the development of protocols for the use of HD in AC. Full article

COVID-19 vaccines have revolutionized prevention and clinical management by reducing disease severity and mortality. However, their long-term impact on hospitalization is unclear. This retrospective study assessed whether vaccination status, timing, and number of vaccine doses influence the risk of hospitalization and COVID-19 pneumonia in a large cohort in Italy, several years after initial vaccine rollout. From 1 October 2023, to 2 February 2024, at Humanitas Research Hospital (Milan) and two affiliates, we recorded age, sex, comorbidities, vaccination status (number of doses and time since last dose), admission type (urgent vs. elective), and pneumonia diagnosis. Baseline health was quantified by the Charlson Comorbidity Index. Among 16,034 admissions (14,874 patients), vaccination data were available for 5743 cases: 40.8% were in the emergency setting and 59.2% were elective. Patients presented with pneumonia in 6.8% of cases. Laboratory results confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia occurred in 43.7% of pneumonia cases, with a 16.9% mortality. Patients with no vaccine dose had a higher proportion of COVID-19 pneumonia, while COVID-19 pneumonia rates were lower in individuals who had received more vaccine doses. There were no significant differences in COVID-19 pneumonia risk by timing of last vaccination. Moreover, hospitalized unvaccinated patients had overall more frequent emergency admissions (57.3%), while patients with three or more doses had about a ~40% emergency admission rate. COVID-19 positivity during hospitalization was highest in unvaccinated patients (90.7%) and declined with vaccination status. Vaccinated patients, especially those with multiple doses, had significantly lower COVID-19 pneumonia rates and emergency admissions. These findings suggest a possible protective effect of vaccination in modifying the clinical presentation and severity of illness among those who are hospitalized and support continued vaccination efforts for high-risk groups to reduce severe adverse outcomes.
