Smartphones have revolutionized our daily lives, becoming portable pocket computers with easy internet access. India, the second-highest smartphone and internet user, experienced a significant rise in smartphone usage between 2013 and 2024. Prolonged smartphone use, exceeding 20 min at a time, can lead to physical and mental health issues, including psychophysiological disorders. Digital devices and their extended exposure to blue light cause digital eyestrain, sleep disorders and visual-related problems. This research examines the impact of 1 h smartphone usage on visual fatigue among young Indian adults. A portable, low-cost system has been developed to measure visual activity to address this. The developed visual activity measurement system measures blink rate, inter-blink interval, and pupil diameter. Measured eye activity was recorded during 1 h smartphone usage of e-book reading, video watching, and social-media reels (short videos). Social media reels show increased screen variations, affecting pupil dilation and reducing blink rate due to continuous screen brightness and intensity changes. This reduction in blink rate and increase in inter-blink interval or pupil dilation could lead to visual fatigue. Full article

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cancer drive demand for therapeutic functional foods. This study developed freeze-dried fermented camel milk (FCM) with Ajwa date pulp (ADP), evaluating its physical and functional properties, probiotic survival, and potential benefits for diabetes and cancer. To achieve this target, six FCM formulations were prepared using ABT-5 starter culture (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus) with or without Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus B-1937 and ADP (12% or 15%). The samples were freeze-dried, and their functional properties, such as water activity, dispersibility, water absorption capacity, water absorption index, water solubility index, insolubility index, and sedimentation, were assessed. Reconstitution properties such as density, flowability, air content, porosity, loose bulk density, packed bulk density, particle density, carrier index, Hausner ratio, porosity, and density were examined. In addition, color and probiotic survivability under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were analyzed. Also, antidiabetic potential was assessed via α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assays, while cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay on Caco-2 cells. The results show that ADP supplementation significantly improved dispersibility (up to 72.73% in FCM15D+L). These improvements are attributed to changes in particle size distribution and increased carbohydrate and mineral content, which facilitate powder rehydration and reduce clumping. All FCM variants demonstrated low water activity (0.196–0.226), indicating good potential for shelf stability. The reconstitution properties revealed that FCM powders with ADP had higher bulk and packed densities but lower particle density and porosity than controls. Including ADP reduced interstitial air and increased occluded air within the powders, which may minimize oxidation risks and improve packaging efficiency. ADP incorporation resulted in a significant decrease in lightness (L*) and increases in redness (a*) and yellowness (b*), with greater pigment and phenolic content at higher ADP levels. These changes reflect the natural colorants and browning reactions associated with ADP, leading to a more intense and visually distinct product. Probiotic survivability was higher in ADP-fortified samples, with L. acidophilus and B. bifidum showing resilience in intestinal conditions. The FCM15D+L formulation exhibited potent antidiabetic effects, with IC50 values of 111.43 μg mL−1 for α-amylase and 77.21 μg mL−1 for α-glucosidase activities, though lower than control FCM (8.37 and 10.74 μg mL−1, respectively). Cytotoxicity against Caco-2 cells was most potent in non-ADP samples (IC50: 82.22 μg mL−1 for FCM), suggesting ADP and L. rhamnosus may reduce antiproliferative effects due to proteolytic activity. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that ADP-enriched FCM is a promising functional food with enhanced probiotic viability, antidiabetic potential, and desirable physical properties. This work highlights the potential of camel milk and date synergies in combating some NCDs in vitro, suggesting potential for functional food application. Full article

Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring provides valuable insight into the body’s dynamic cardiovascular regulation across various physiological states such as physical activity, emotional stress, postural changes, and sleep. Continuous BP monitoring captures different variations in systolic and diastolic pressures, reflecting autonomic nervous system activity, vascular compliance, and circadian rhythms. This enables early identification of abnormal BP trends and allows for timely diagnosis and interventions to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease as well as chronic stress or anxiety disorders. To facilitate continuous BP monitoring, we propose an AI-powered estimation framework. The proposed framework first uses an expert-driven feature engineering approach that systematically extracts physiological features from photoplethysmogram (PPG)-based arterial pulse waveforms (APWs). Extracted features include pulse rate, ascending/descending times, pulse width, slopes, intensity variations, and waveform areas. These features are fused with demographic data (age, gender, height, weight, BMI) to enhance model robustness and accuracy across diverse populations. The framework utilizes a Tab-Transformer to learn rich feature embeddings, which are then processed through an ensemble machine learning framework consisting of CatBoost, XGBoost, and LightGBM. Evaluated on a dataset of 1000 subjects, the model achieves Mean Absolute Errors (MAE) of 3.87 mmHg (SBP) and 2.50 mmHg (DBP), meeting British Hypertension Society (BHS) Grade A and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. (1) Background: Previous studies indicate that individuals who engage in regular physical activity have a higher pain threshold than those who do not exercise. However, it remains unclear how this phenomenon behaves in individuals exposed to chronic hypoxia. This study evaluates pain perception at high altitude between high-altitude natives who exercised regularly and those who did not practice physical activity. (2) Methods: Eighty-four healthy volunteers aged 20 to 30 years old with a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range (18.5–24.9) residing in the city of Puno (3825 m) were recruited. The unilateral ischemia pain provocation test was used, applying pressure with a manual sphygmomanometer to generate transient ischemia in the arm while the patient opens and closes their hand. Onset, peak, and resolution times of pain, heart rate, and oxygen saturation were recorded. (3) Results: The average time to pain onset in the right arm was 30.2 s ± 14.1 during light physical activity, whereas, during moderate physical activity, it increased to 32.5 s ± 15.4. In the left arm, the average time until pain sensation was 27.9 s ± 16.8 during light physical activity and increased to 34.6 s ± 18.5 with moderate physical activity. Regarding the progression of pain intensity, the average time to reach unbearable pain in the right arm was 54.1 s ± 16.4 during light physical activity and 53.8 s ± 19.6 during moderate physical activity; in the left arm, it was 53.0 s ± 19.6 during light physical activity, increasing to 59.3 s ± 24.5 during moderate physical activity. (4) Conclusions: A more stable and slightly higher pain tolerance in the dominant arm was observed. Full article

Modifications to daily sedentary behavior (SB) and participation in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) may provide beneficial results in the prevention and management of mental disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This cross-sectional research investigated the minimum number of follow-up days needed to reliably estimate the time spent in SB and MVPA from accelerometer data in people with MDD. SB and physical activity (PA) were assessed using an accelerometer, and classified as time spent in SB and in different PA intensities (light—LPA, moderate—MPA, vigorous—VPA, MVPA, or total—TPA). The minimum days of use were calculated using Spearman–Brown analyses, considering only variables with an ICC > 0.8 (cut point-considered acceptable). In the results, 98 people with MDD showed no differences between the days of the week, and an ICC > 0.8 for SB, MPA, and MVPA (for 2-3-4-5-6 vs. 7). Thus, Spearman–Brown analyses were performed considering 2 days (minimum days with ICC > 0.8) and 7 days (maximum days of original test with ICC > 0.8). Our results suggest that a minimum of 3 days of accelerometer use is necessary to reliably estimate the time of SB, MPA, and MVPA. This finding has a significant practical application, allowing data collection using a reduced duration of accelerometer wear. The optimization of time needed in this context permits the utilization of accelerometers among a greater number of individuals, possibly affecting the sample size of MDD patients in research and decreasing acquisition costs in this scientific area. Objectives: The present study seeks to analyze the relationships between the intensity of physical activity, mental hyperactivity and sleep quality. A comparative, descriptive and exploratory study was carried out. Methods: A sample of 1907 university students belonging to the degree of Physiotherapy and Physical Activity and Sport Sciences was used. The International Physical Activity and Mental Hyperactivity Questionnaires were used. The scale used was the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. The proposed model analyzes the relationships of physical activity with mental hyperactivity and various sleep-related factors. Results: The following fit indices were evaluated: Chi-Square = 80.242; Degrees of Freedom = 3; Incremental Fit Index = 0.951, Comparative Fit Index = 0.977; Normed Fit Index = 0.946; Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.071. The values obtained show the good fit of the theoretical model. Statistically significant differences are observed (p < 0.05) in the causal relationship of mental hyperactivity with the personal assessment of sleep as a function of the intensity of physical activity. A greater effect of light (β = 0.671) compared to moderate- (β = 0.428) or vigorous-intensity (β = 0.343) physical activity in personal sleep assessment is evident. Statistically significant differences were also observed in the causal relationship of mental hyperactivity with the time to fall asleep (p < 0.05). Light physical activity (β = 0.479) has a greater causal relationship with time to fall asleep than moderate- (β = 0.302) or vigorous-intensity (β = 0.413) physical activity. Conclusions: Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the intensity with which physical activity is performed has a modulating effect on sleep quality and mental hyperactivity. Random lasers (RLs) based on glasses and glass-ceramics doped with rare-earth ions (REI) deserve great attention because of their specific physical properties such as large thermal stability, possibility to operate at high intensities, optical wavelength tunability, and prospects to operate Fiber-RLs, among other characteristics of interest for photonic applications. In this article, we present a brief review of experiments with RLs based on tellurite and germanate glasses and glass-ceramics doped with neodymium (Nd³⁺), erbium (Er³⁺), and ytterbium (Yb³⁺) ions. The glass samples were fabricated using the melt-quenching technique followed by controlled crystallization to achieve the glass-ceramics. Afterwards, the samples were crushed to obtain the powder samples for the RLs experiments. The experiments demonstrated RLs emissions at various wavelengths, with feedback mechanisms due to light scattering at grain/air and crystalline/glass interfaces. The phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking was verified through statistical analysis of the RLs intensity fluctuations, indicating a photonic phase-transition (corresponding to the RL threshold) analogous to the paramagnetic-to-spin glass transition in magnetic materials. The various results reported here highlight the potential of glasses and glass-ceramics for the development of RLs with improved performance in terms of reduction of laser threshold and large lifetime of the active media in comparison with organic materials. Physical function is likely bidirectionally associated with physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep. We examined trajectories of physical function as predictors of these behaviors in community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 y without dementia from the Adult Changes in Thought cohort. Exposures were trajectories of physical performance (short Performance-Based Physical Function [sPPF]) and self-reported activities of daily living (ADL) impairment. Outcomes were device-measured PA and SB and self-reported sleep. We fit linear mixed-effects models to define trajectory slopes and intercepts for each functional measure over the prior 10 years. We used multivariable linear regression to investigate the relationship between trajectory features and outcomes, using bootstrap confidence intervals. Participants (N = 905) were 77.6 (SD = 6.9) years old, 55% female, 91% white, and had a median sPPF score of 9 (IQR = [8, 11]) and median impairment of 1 ADL (IQR = [0, 2]) at the time of activity measurement (baseline). Steeper decreases in sPPF (0.3-unit, 25% of the range) were associated with fewer steps (−1180, 95% CI = [−2853, −185]) and less moderate-to-vigorous PA (−15.7 min/day [−35.6, −2.3]). Steeper increases in ADL impairment were associated with 35.0 min/day (4.3, 65.0) additional sitting time, longer mean sitting bout duration (3.5 min/bout [0.8, 6.2]), fewer steps (−1372 [−2223, −638]), less moderate-to-vigorous PA (−13 min/day [−22.6, −5.0]), and more time-in-bed (25.5 min/day [6.5, 43.5]). No associations were observed with light PA or sleep quality. Worsening physical function is associated with lower PA and higher SB, but not with light-intensity movement or sleep quality, supporting the bidirectional nature of the relationship between physical function and physical behaviors. Background: Previous research has examined the relationship between physical activity (PA) and sleep quality in young people. However, studies exploring how different intensities of PA relate to light and deep sleep, using objective measurement tools, remain scarce. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze the potential associations between PA intensity and sleep stages and to determine the most effective intensity of PA for positively influencing sleep during adolescence. Methods: The sample consisted of 1072 Spanish pre-adolescents and adolescents (53% girls and 47% boys) aged 13.03 ± 1.79 years. Sleep and intensity of PA were measured using the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 smartband. Sleep was categorized as light or deep, while PA intensity was determined by heart rate (HR) and classified as light (resting to 50% of maximum HR), moderate (50–70% of max HR), and vigorous (70–85% of max HR). Results: Analyses revealed that greater daily time spent in light-intensity PA was associated with less light sleep and more deep sleep. Additionally, vigorous-intensity PA was positively associated with increased deep sleep. No negative associations were observed between moderate-intensity PA and sleep quality. In conclusion, this study suggests that promoting prolonged light-intensity activities (e.g., walking) or short bursts of vigorous activity (e.g., sports participation) may enhance sleep quality during pre-adolescence and adolescence. Background/Objectives: Master athletes in team sports represent a growing population of individuals who continue to engage in structured training and competition. Among these sports, basketball has primarily been investigated in older athletes; however, age-related effects on training load within the broader master athlete population remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to examine the age-related differences in workloads among master basketball athletes and determine whether game participation can facilitate the achievement of the recommended physical activity level. Methods: A total of 178 male athletes were divided into three age groups (35–45, 46–60, and ≥60 years) and participated in a national tournament. External load metrics, including accumulated acceleration load (AAL), mechanical load (ML), and jump load (JL), were recorded using tri-axial microsensors. Internal load (IL) was assessed via session ratings of perceived exertion (sRPE). Physical activity levels were categorized into light, moderate, and vigorous intensity using accelerometry-derived metabolic equivalents. Results: Significant age-related differences (p < 0.01) were observed in AAL, ML, and JL, with the youngest group showing the highest values. Likewise, the time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) displayed an age-dependent manner and decreased with age. Older athletes spent more time in low-intensity activities and employed energy-conserving strategies, avoiding high-speed and high-impact actions. Despite these variations, sRPE ratings were similar among groups. Conclusions: In conclusion, age is a crucial regulator of training load and physical activity and should be considered by practitioners and coaches who design training and physical activity plans for master basketball athletes. Despite the age-related differences, participation in basketball matches provides a substantial opportunity for increasing daily MVPA. Full article

Background/Objectives: Night shift workers (NSWs) are at a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between CVD risk factors and lifestyle behavior (sedentary behavior [SB], physical activity [PA], and sleep) is unclear among NSWs. NSWs lead different lifestyles on workdays and leisure days. This study aimed to investigate the association between lifestyle behavior times and CVD risk factors among NSWs during workdays and leisure days using an isotemporal substitution model. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 66 male NSWs. Time spent on lifestyle behaviors was obtained using a tri-axial accelerometer and classified into SB, light-intensity PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and sleep. Lifestyle behavior times were divided into workdays and leisure days. CVD risk factors were determined based on periodic health checkups. An isotemporal substitution model was used to estimate the effect of replacing one lifestyle behavior with another on CVD risk factors. Results: The lifestyle behavior times differed between workdays and leisure days. On workdays, reallocating 30 min of SB to light-intensity PA was significantly associated with a lower waist circumference. In addition, reallocating sleep to SB or MVPA was significantly associated with higher triglyceride levels. On leisure days, reallocating SB or sleep time to MVPA was significantly associated with lower aspartate aminotransferase levels. Conclusions: Given the difference in the associations between lifestyle behavior times and CVD risk factors among NSWs between workdays and leisure days, NSWs should be mindful of the time spent on SB, PA, and sleep on workdays and leisure days to achieve healthier outcomes. Background: The positive effects of Pilates on balance, resistance, strength, and flexibility have been described several times. Additionally, positive effects on psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, were documented. However, the change in behaviors at risk for stress-related physical disorders has not yet been validated in a group of people practicing Pilates. In light of these assumptions, changes in risk behaviors for stress-related physical disorders were assessed along with psychological symptoms, comparing a group of people practicing Pilates with non-active controls. Methods: The study was observational. Data from an experimental group of twenty-five people practicing Pilates (five males and 20 females between 50 and 64 years old) were compared to those of a control group of 24 people (seven males and 17 females between 54 and 65 years). Psychological symptoms were assessed through the Symptom Questionnaire (SQ) while the P Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) investigated risk behaviors for stress-related physical disorders. Results: The analyses attested a significant decrease in anxiety (time × group effect: F = 17.38; p < 0.001), depression (time × group effect: F = 5.44; p < 0.05), and somatization (time × group effect: F = 11.25; p < 0.01), as well as an improvement in stress-risk behaviors, especially in the ability to benefit from spare time by “taking one’s mind away” from commitments (time × group effect: F = 8.56; p < 0.01). Conclusions: Although the literature describes benefits for anxiety and depression following moderate-intensity sporting activities, our study also noted positive effects from Pilates on stress and psychological symptoms. Our findings suggest that Pilates may be appropriate for people who can perform light to moderate exercise. Full article

Free-living physical behaviour (PB), from sedentarism through to vigorous physical activity (PA), is increasingly studied due to its links to health outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether pre-existing day-to-day regularity in certain PB patterns influences intervention responsiveness. Therefore, this study hypothesized that (1) inter-day variability in certain PBs would decrease following a sedentary behaviour (SB) reduction intervention, and (2) those with high inter-day variability (low regularity) at baseline would be less likely to alter their behaviour compared to those with low inter-day variability (high regularity). Thirty-six older women (73 ± 5 years) were allocated to one of three groups: (1) daily SB fragmentation (SBF) (n = 14), (2) single daily bout of continuous light-intensity PA/LIPA (n = 14), or (3) control (n = 8), where no instructions vis-à-vis altering daily physical activity or sedentary behaviour were given. PB was objectively assessed (weeks 0 and 8) using three-dimensional accelerometry. Participants (48% of the study sample) with high regularity at baseline (<25th sample percentile for SB and PA bout length), showed greater SB reduction, and increased average PA bout length (p < 0.05) at week 8. These findings suggest that baseline regularity in physical behaviour may enhance intervention responsiveness. This aligns with theories of habit formation and self-regulation, indicating that personalised interventions would benefit a wider range of populations. Full article

This cross-sectional study aimed to identify associations between clinical inflammatory risk markers, body composition, heart rate variability (HRV), and self-reported and objectively assessed physical activity (PA) in university students with overweight and obesity. Seventeen participants (eight females) completed a screening visit following a randomized controlled four-arm crossover trial period with 8 h of uninterrupted prolonged sitting, alternate sitting and standing, continuous standing, and continuous slow walking, respectively. Clinical inflammatory risk markers were obtained from venous blood samples, and PA was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF) and ActiGraph wGT3X-BT accelerometers. HRV was recorded over 24 h using the Faros 180 Holter electrocardiogram (ECG). White blood cell (WBC) counts were significantly correlated with fat mass (FM; p = 0.03) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT; p = 0.04) and inversely correlated with moderate PA (p = 0.02). Light-intensity PA (LIPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were correlated with HRV parameters (p = 0.02), and LIPA was inversely correlated with interleukin-6 (p = 0.003) and c-reactive protein (p = 0.04) during different trial conditions. In university students with overweight and obesity, higher values of FM were negatively correlated with WBC count, and integrating LIPA and MVPA in the students’ daily life strengthened their sympathetic–parasympathetic regulation and positively mediated anti-inflammatory mechanisms. This study analyzed the relationship between time spent on daily physical activity at different intensities (light, moderate, and vigorous) and learning strategies in adolescents. The sample included 147 Spanish adolescents (62% girls, 13.61 ± 1.95 years). Learning strategies were assessed using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), while physical activity intensity was recorded via the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 smartband, which measured heart rate (HR). HR was categorized into light (rest–50% max HR), moderate (50–70% max HR), and vigorous (70–85% max HR). Adolescents who engaged in moderate-intensity activities for 46–62 min daily showed the highest scores in elaboration, critical thinking, and metacognitive self-regulation, with girls also excelling in effort regulation (all p < 0.05). Among boys, 3–6 min of vigorous activity per day was linked to higher scores in elaboration, organization, critical thinking, peer learning, and rehearsal. Conversely, girls engaging in less than 3 min of vigorous activity obtained the highest scores in critical thinking and peer learning (all p < 0.05). It is recommended that students engage in 60 min of daily moderate-intensity physical activity. Additionally, short 5-min vigorous-intensity sessions should be encouraged in both boys and girls to enhance learning benefits and reduce social barriers to high-intensity exercise. Full article
