Amidst the background of accelerated global energy transition, the safety risk of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, especially the fire hazard, has become a key bottleneck hindering their large-scale application, and there is an urgent need to build a systematic prevention and control program. This paper focuses on the fire characteristics and thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion battery energy storage power stations, analyzing the current situation of their risk prevention and control technology across the dimensions of monitoring and early warning technology, thermal management technology, and fire protection technology, and comparing and analyzing the characteristics of each technology from multiple angles. Building on this analysis, this paper summarizes the limitations of the existing technologies and puts forward prospective development paths, including the development of multi-parameter coupled monitoring and warning technology, integrated and intelligent thermal management technology, clean and efficient extinguishing agents, and dynamic fire suppression strategies, aiming to provide solid theoretical support and technical guidance for the precise risk prevention and control of lithium-ion battery storage power stations. This study investigates a novel heat pipe integrated cooling system designed for thermal management of Tesla’s 4680 cylindrical lithium–ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs). Through a comprehensive approach combining experimental analysis, 1-D AMESim simulations, and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, the thermal performance of various wick structures and working fluid filling ratios was evaluated. The experimental setup utilized a triangular prism chamber housing three surrogate heater blocks to replicate the heat generation of 4680 cells under 1C, 2C, and 3C discharge rates. Results demonstrated that a blended fabric wick with a crown-shaped design (Wick 5) at a 30–40% filling ratio achieved the lowest maximum temperature (Tmax of 47.0°C), minimal surface temperature deviation (ΔTsurface of 2.8°C), and optimal thermal resistance (Rth of 0.27°C/W) under 85 W heat input. CFD simulations validated experimental findings, confirming stable evaporation–condensation circulation at a 40% filling ratio, while identifying thermal limits at high heat loads (155 W). The proposed hybrid battery thermal management system (BTMS) offers significant potential for enhancing the performance and safety of high-energy density EV batteries. Effective building operation requires a careful balance between energy conservation and indoor environmental comfort. Although numerous methods have been developed to reduce energy consumption during the operational phase, their objectives and applications vary widely. However, the complexity of building energy management makes it challenging to identify the most suitable methods that simultaneously achieve both comfort and efficiency goals. Existing studies often lack a systematic framework that supports integrated decision-making under comfort constraints. This research aims to address this gap by proposing a decision-making tree for selecting energy conservation methods during building operation with an explicit consideration of indoor environmental comfort. A comprehensive literature review is conducted to identify four main energy-consuming components during building operation: the building envelope, HVAC systems, lighting systems, and plug loads and appliances. Three key comfort indicators—thermal comfort, lighting comfort, and air quality comfort—are defined, and energy conservation methods are categorized into three strategic groups: passive strategies, control optimization strategies, and behavioural intervention strategies. Each method is assessed using a defined set of evaluation criteria. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey is administered for the calibration of the decision tree, incorporating stakeholder preferences and expert judgement. The findings contribute to the advancement of understanding regarding the co-optimization of energy conservation and occupant comfort in building operations. Full article

In the context of urban decarbonization, multi-energy microgrids (MEMGs) are gaining increasing relevance due to their ability to enhance synergies across multiple energy vectors. This study presents a block-based MILP framework developed to optimize the operations of a real MEMG, with a particular focus on accurately modeling the structure of electricity and natural gas bills. The objective is to assess the added economic value of integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) under the assumption it is employed to provide implicit flexibility—namely, bill management, energy arbitrage, and peak shaving. Results show that under assumed market conditions, tariff schemes, and BESS costs, none of the analyzed BESS configurations achieve a positive net present value. However, a 2 MW/4 MWh BESS yields a 3.8% reduction in annual operating costs compared to the base case without storage, driven by increased self-consumption (+2.8%), reduced thermal energy waste (–6.4%), and a substantial decrease in power-based electricity charges (–77.9%). The performed sensitivity analyses indicate that even with a significantly higher day-ahead market price spread, the BESS is not sufficiently incentivized to perform pure energy arbitrage and that the effectiveness of a time-of-use power-based tariff depends not only on the level of price differentiation but also on the BESS size. Overall, this study provides insights into the role of BESS in MEMGs and highlights the need for electricity bill designs that better reward the provision of implicit flexibility by storage systems. Modern aircraft increasingly utilizes highly integrated electronic equipment, driving continuously increasing heat dissipation demands. Vapor compression refrigeration systems demonstrate stronger alignment with future aircraft thermal management trends, leveraging their superior volumetric cooling capacity, high energy efficiency, and independence from engine bleed air. This paper reviews global research progress on aircraft vapor compression refrigeration systems, covering performance optimization, dynamic characteristics, control strategies, fault detection, and international development histories and typical applications. Analysis identifies emerging challenges under large-temperature-range cooling requirements, with comparative assessment establishing zeotropic mixture auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems as the optimal forward-looking solution. Finally, recognizing current research gaps, we propose future research directions for onboard auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems: optimizing refrigerant mixtures for flight conditions, achieving efficient gas-liquid separation during variable overloads and attitude conditions, and developing model predictive control with intelligent optimization to ensure reliability. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for the largest share of energy consumption in European Union (EU) buildings, representing approximately 40% of the final energy use and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Latent thermal energy storage (LTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance HVAC efficiency. This review systematically examines the role of latent thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) in optimizing HVAC performance to align with EU climate targets, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). By analyzing advancements in PCM-enhanced HVAC systems across residential and commercial sectors, this study identifies critical pathways for reducing energy demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and accelerating the transition to nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). The review categorizes PCM technologies into organic, inorganic, and eutectic systems, evaluating their integration into thermal storage tanks, airside free cooling units, heat pumps, and building envelopes. Empirical data from case studies demonstrate consistent energy savings of 10–30% and peak load reductions of 20–50%, with Mediterranean climates achieving superior cooling load management through paraffin-based PCMs (melting range: 18–28 °C) compared to continental regions. Policy-driven initiatives, such as Germany’s renewable integration mandates for public buildings, are shown to amplify PCM adoption rates by 40% compared to regions lacking regulatory incentives. Despite these benefits, barriers persist, including fragmented EU standards, life cycle cost uncertainties, and insufficient training. This work bridges critical gaps between PCM research and EU policy implementation, offering a roadmap for scalable deployment. By contextualizing technical improvement within regulatory and economic landscapes, the review provides strategic recommendations to achieve the EU’s 2030 emissions reduction targets and 2050 climate neutrality goals. This paper calculates the expected cost of uncertainty in solar and wind energy using the uncertainty cost function (UCF), with a primary focus on computational processing time. The comparison of processing time for the uncertainty cost quantification (UCQ) is conducted through three methods: the Monte Carlo simulation method (MC), numerical integration method, and analytical method. The MC simulation relies on random simulations, while numerical integration employs established numerical formulations. These methods are commonly used for solving cost optimization problems in power systems. However, the analytical method is a less conventional approach. The analytical method for calculating uncertainty costs is closely related to the UCF, as it relies on a mathematical representation of the impact of uncertainty on costs, which is modeled through the UCF. A multi-objective approach was employed for scheduling an energy management system, that is to say, thermal–wind–solar energy systems, proposing a simplified method for modeling controllable renewable generation through UCF with an analytical method, instead of the complex probability distributions typically used in traditional methods. This simplification reduces complexity and computational processing time in optimization problems, offering greater accuracy in approximating real distributions and adaptability to various scenarios. The simulations performed yielded positive results in improving cost estimation and computational efficiency, making it a promising tool for enhancing economic distribution and grid operability. The global shift towards the use of renewable energy is essential to ensure sustainable development, and geothermal energy stands out as a suitable option that can support various cascading projects. Spent geothermal water (SGW) requires proper treatment to ensure that it does not become an environmental burden. Typically, companies often face the dilemma of choosing between discharging spent geothermal water (SGW) into surface waters or injecting it into rock masses, and the economic and environmental impacts of the decision made determines the feasibility of geothermal plant development. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively assess the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of SGW injection into rock masses. To this end, we employed a comprehensive analytical approach using the Chochołów GT-1 geothermal injection borehole in Poland as a reference case. We also performed drilling and hydrogeological testing, characterized rock samples in the laboratory, and corrected hydrodynamic parameters for thermal lift effects to ensure accurate aquifer characterization. The results obtained highlight the importance of correcting hydrogeological parameters for thermal effects, which if neglected can lead to a significant overestimation of the calculated hydrogeological parameters. Based on our analysis, we developed a framework for assessing SGW injection feasibility that integrates detailed hydrogeological and geotechnical analyses with environmental risk assessment to ensure sustainable geothermal resource exploitation. This framework should be mandatory for planning new geothermal power plants or complexes worldwide. Our results also emphasize the need for adequate SGW management so as to ensure that the benefits of using a renewable and zero-emission resource, such as geothermal energy, are not compromised by the low absorption capacity of rock masses or adverse environmental effects. Fast charging accelerates lithium-ion battery operation but increases the risk of lithium (Li) plating—a process that undermines efficiency, longevity, and safety. Here, we introduce a predictive modeling framework that captures the onset and severity of Li plating under practical fast-charging conditions. By integrating an empirically parameterized SOC threshold model with time-dependent kinetic simulations and Arrhenius based thermal analysis, we delineate operating regimes prone to irreversible Li accumulation. The framework distinguishes reversible and irreversible plating fractions, quantifies energy losses, and identifies a critical activation energy (0.25 eV) associated with surface-limited deposition. Visualizations in the form of severity maps and voltage-zone risk classifications enable direct application to battery management systems. This approach bridges electrochemical degradation modeling with real-time charge protocol design, offering a practical tool for safe, high-performance battery operation. Full article

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is accelerating due to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the predominant energy storage solution in EVs, offering high energy density, efficiency, and long lifespan. However, their adoption is overly involved with critical safety concerns, including thermal runaway and overheating. This review systematically focuses on the critical role of battery thermal management systems (BTMSs), such as active, passive, and hybrid cooling systems, in maintaining LIBs within their optimal operating temperature range, ensuring temperature homogeneity, safety, and efficiency. Additionally, the study explores the impact of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into BTMS on thermal performance prediction and energy-efficient cooling, focusing on optimizing the operating parameters of cooling systems. This study presents a new comparative analysis of the cognitive control methods of HVAC systems that assess reinforcement learning (RL) and traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. Through extensive simulations in various building environments, we have shown that while the PID controller provides stability under predictable conditions, the RL-based control can improve energy efficiency and thermal comfort in dynamic environments by constantly adapting to environmental changes. Our framework integrates real-time sensor data with a scalable RL architecture, allowing autonomous optimization without the need for a precise system model. Key findings show that RL largely outperforms PID during disturbances such as occupancy increases and weather fluctuations, and that the preferably optimal solution balances energy savings and comfort. The study provides practical insight into the implementation of adaptive HVAC control and outlines the potential of RL to transform building energy management despite its higher computational requirements. Ventilated Facades for Low-Carbon Buildings: A Review

The construction sector presently consumes about 40% of global energy and generates 36% of CO2 emissions, making facade retrofits a priority for decarbonising buildings. This review clarifies how ventilated facades (VFs), wall assemblies that interpose a ventilated air cavity between outer cladding and the insulated structure, address that challenge. First, the paper categorises VFs by structural configuration, ventilation strategy and functional control into four principal families: double-skin, rainscreen, hybrid/adaptive and active–passive systems, with further extensions such as BIPV, PCM and green-wall integrations that couple energy generation or storage with envelope performance. Heat-transfer analysis shows that the cavity interrupts conductive paths, promotes buoyancy- or wind-driven convection, and curtails radiative exchange. Key design parameters, including cavity depth, vent-area ratio, airflow velocity and surface emissivity, govern this balance, while hybrid ventilation offers the most excellent peak-load mitigation with modest energy input. A synthesis of simulation and field studies indicates that properly detailed VFs reduce envelope cooling loads by 20–55% across diverse climates and cut winter heating demand by 10–20% when vents are seasonally managed or coupled with heat-recovery devices. These thermal benefits translate into steadier interior surface temperatures, lower radiant asymmetry and fewer drafts, thereby expanding the hours occupants remain within comfort bands without mechanical conditioning. Climate-responsive guidance emerges in tropical and arid regions, favouring highly ventilated, low-absorptance cladding; temperate and continental zones gain from adaptive vents, movable insulation or PCM layers; multi-skin adaptive facades promise balanced year-round savings by re-configuring in real time. Overall, the review demonstrates that VFs constitute a versatile, passive-plus platform for low-carbon buildings, simultaneously enhancing energy efficiency, durability and indoor comfort. Future advances in smart controls, bio-based materials and integrated energy-recovery systems are poised to unlock further performance gains and accelerate the sector’s transition to net-zero. Emerging multifunctional materials such as phase-change composites, nanostructured coatings, and perovskite-integrated systems also show promise in enhancing facade adaptability and energy responsiveness. This paper presents a simulation framework for evaluating power flow, energy efficiency, thermal behavior, and energy consumption in electric vehicles (EVs) under standardized driving conditions. A detailed Simulink model is developed, integrating a lithium-ion battery, inverter, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), gearbox, and a field-oriented control strategy with PI-based speed and current regulation. The framework is applied to four standard driving cycles—UDDS, HWFET, WLTP, and NEDC—to assess system performance under varied load conditions. The UDDS cycle imposes the highest thermal loads, with temperature rises of 76.5 °C (motor) and 52.0 °C (inverter). The HWFET cycle yields the highest energy efficiency, with PMSM efficiency reaching 92% and minimal SOC depletion (15%) due to its steady-speed profile. The WLTP cycle shows wide power fluctuations (−30–19.3 kW), and a motor temperature rise of 73.6 °C. The NEDC results indicate a thermal increase of 75.1 °C. Model results show good agreement with published benchmarks, with deviations generally below 5%, validating the framework’s accuracy. These findings underscore the importance of cycle-sensitive analysis in optimizing energy use and thermal management in EV powertrain design. Full article

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is a lightweight, thermally insulating, and fire-resistant building material that has become prominent in sustainable construction due to its reduced production energy demands and minimal environmental impact. As an increasing number of AAC-based structures reach end-of-life, the effective recycling and reuse of AAC waste present both challenges and opportunities within the context of sustainable building practices and circular economy frameworks. This study presents a scientometric review of AAC recycling research published between 2014 and 2024, using the Web of Science database and bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace. Key trends, techniques, and knowledge gaps in AAC recycling are identified, highlighting issues such as high energy consumption, limited practical implementation, and the absence of standardized recovery protocols. The study also outlines emerging research pathways, including detailed material characterization, development of recycling standards, innovative reuse techniques, hybrid material systems, and the integration of recycled AAC in new construction. These insights provide a foundation for advancing sustainable building material strategies and inform policy and practice in construction waste management. Full article

This paper proposes a ladder carbon trading-based low-carbon economic dispatch model for integrated energy systems (IESs), incorporating flexible load optimization and hybrid energy storage systems consisting of battery and thermal energy storage. First, a ladder-type carbon trading mechanism is introduced, in which the carbon trading cost increases progressively with emission levels, thereby providing stronger incentives for emission reduction. Second, flexible loads are categorized and modeled as shiftable, transferable, and reducible types, each with distinct operational constraints and compensation mechanisms. Third, both battery and thermal energy storage systems are considered to improve system flexibility by storing excess energy and supplying it when needed. Finally, a unified optimization framework is developed to coordinate the dispatch of renewable generation, gas turbines, waste heat recovery units, and multi-energy storage devices while integrating flexible load flexibility. The objective is to minimize the total system cost, which includes energy procurement, carbon trading expenditures, and demand response compensation. Three comparative case studies are conducted to evaluate system performance under different operational configurations: the proposed comprehensive model, a carbon trading-only approach, and a conventional baseline scenario. Results demonstrate that the proposed framework effectively balances economic and environmental objectives through coordinated demand-side management, hybrid storage utilization, and the ladder-type carbon trading market mechanism. It reshapes the system load profile via peak shaving and valley filling, improves renewable energy integration, and enhances overall system efficiency. Full article
