Integration of Daylight in Building Design as a Way to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Buildings

According to the United Nations Environment Programme reports, buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of energy-related emissions; therefore, energy-optimized building design is crucial to reduce the reliance on non-renewable energy sources as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The OECD reports indicate the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as one of the effective strategies for decarbonization of buildings, since a 3D digital representation of both physical and functional characteristics of a building can help to design a more efficient infrastructure. An efficient integration of solar energy in building design can be vital for the enhancement of energy performance in terms of heating, cooling, and lighting demand. This paper presents results of an analysis of how factors related to the use of daylight, such as automatic control of artificial lighting, external shading, or the visual absorptance of internal surfaces, influence the energy efficiency within an example room in two different climatic zones. The simulation was conducted using Design Builder software, with predefined occupancy schedules and internal heat gains, and standard EPW weather files for Warsaw and Genua climate zones. The study indicates that for the examined room, when no automatic sunshades or a lighting control system is utilized, most of the final energy demand is for cooling purposes (45–54%), followed by lighting (42–43%), with only 3–12% for heating purposes. The introduction of sunshades and/or the use of daylight allowed for a reduction of the total demand by up to half. Moreover, it was pointed out that often neglected factors, like the colour of the internal surfaces, can have a significant effect on the final energy consumption. In variants with light interior, the total energy consumption was lower by about 3–4% of the baseline demand, compared to their corresponding ones with dark surfaces. These results are consistent with previous studies on daylighting strategies and highlight the importance of considering both visual and thermal impacts when evaluating energy performance. Similarly, possible side effects of certain actions were highlighted, such as an increase in heat demand resulting from a reduced need for artificial lighting. The results of the analysis highlight the potential of a simulation-based design approach in optimizing daylight use, contributing to the broader goals of building decarbonization. Full article

Croatian agricultural legislation acknowledges the significance of radionuclides as pollutants in agricultural lands; however, it lacks specific thresholds or reference values for contamination levels, in contrast to other contaminants. This absence highlights the necessity for a comprehensive assessment of radionuclides across various agricultural systems in Croatia. This study investigates the transfer of radionuclides 137Cs and 40K from soil to agricultural crops throughout Croatia and estimates the consequent annual ingestion dose for the population. The samples collected comprised food crops and animal feed, with corresponding soil samples analyzed to calculate transfer factors. Activity concentrations of 137Cs exhibited regional and crop-type variability, reflecting the uneven distribution of fallout and differing soil properties. Transfer factors were found to range from 0.003 to 0.06 for 137Cs and from 0.15 to 3.1 for 40K, with the highest uptake occurring in kidney beans. The total estimated annual effective ingestion dose was calculated to be a maximum of 0.748 mSv/year for children aged 2–7, predominantly attributable to 40K. Given the homeostatic regulation of potassium in the human body, the dose associated with 137Cs poses a more significant radiological concern. These findings underscore the need for radionuclide-specific agricultural legislation in Croatia and offer a baseline for recommending reference values and informing future regulations regarding agricultural soil contamination. Lightweight steel-framing (LSF) systems have become increasingly prominent in modern construction due to their structural efficiency, design flexibility, and sustainability. However, traditional facade materials such as stone are often cost-prohibitive, and brick veneers—despite their popularity—pose seismic performance concerns. This study introduces an innovative porcelain sheathing system for cold-formed steel (CFS) shear walls. Porcelain has no veins thus it offers integrated and reliable strength unlike granite. Four full-scale CFS shear walls incorporating screwed porcelain sheathing (SPS) were tested under combined cyclic lateral and constant gravity loading. The experimental program investigated key seismic characteristics, including lateral stiffness and strength, deformation capacity, failure modes, and energy dissipation, to calculate the system response modification factor (R). The test results showed that configurations with horizontal sheathing, double mid-studs, and three blocking rows improved performance, achieving up to 21.1 kN lateral resistance and 2.5% drift capacity. The average R-factor was 4.2, which exceeds the current design code values (AISI S213: R = 3; AS/NZS 4600: R = 2), suggesting the enhanced seismic resilience of the SPS-CFS system. This study also proposes design improvements to reduce the risk of brittle failure and enhance inelastic behavior. In addition, the results inform discussions on permissible building heights and contribute to the advancement of CFS design codes for seismic regions. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of dealuminated metakaolin (DK), a hazardous industrial by-product generated by the aluminium sulphate (alum) industry and evaluates its potential as a component in cementitious systems for the partial or full replacement of Portland cement (PC). Positioned within the context of waste valorisation in concrete, the review aims to establish a critical understanding of DK formation, properties, and reactivity, particularly its pozzolanic potential, to assess its suitability for use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), or as a precursor in alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems for concrete. A systematic methodology is used to extract and synthesise relevant data from existing literature concerning DK and its potential applications in cement and concrete. The collected information is organised into thematic sections exploring key aspects of DK, beginning with its formation from kaolinite ores, followed by studies on its pozzolanic reactivity. Applications of DK are then reviewed, focusing on its integration into SCMs and alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems. The review consolidates existing knowledge related to DK, identifying scientific gaps and practical challenges that limit its broader adoption for cement and concrete applications, and outlines future research directions to provide a solid foundation for future studies. Overall, this review highlights the potential of DK as a low-carbon, circular-economy material and promotes its integration into efforts to enhance the sustainability of construction practices. The findings aim to support researchers’ and industry stakeholders’ strategies to reduce cement clinker content and mitigate the environmental footprint of concrete in a circular-economy context. Inertial navigation systems (INSs) exhibit distinctive characteristics, such as long-duration operation, full autonomy, and exceptional covertness compared to other navigation systems. However, errors are accumulated over time due to operational principles and the limitations of sensors. To address this problem, this study theoretically explores a numerically simulated integrated inertial navigation system consisting of a single-axis cold atom interferometer gyroscope (CAIG) and a conventional inertial measurement unit (IMU). The system leverages the low bias and drift of the CAIG and the high sampling rate of the conventional IMU to obtain more accurate navigation information. Furthermore, an adaptive gradient ascent (AGA) method is proposed to estimate the variance of the measurement noise online for the Kalman filter. It was found that errors of latitude, longitude, and positioning are reduced by 43.9%, 32.6%, and 32.3% compared with the conventional IMU over 24 h. On this basis, errors from inertial sensor drift could be further reduced by the online Kalman filter. Full article

Smart cities are technologically advanced urban environments where interconnected systems and data-driven technologies enhance public service delivery and quality of life. These cities rely on information and communication technologies, the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and other Industry 4.0 tools to support efficient city management and foster citizen engagement. Often referred to as digital cities, they integrate intelligent infrastructures and real-time data analytics to improve mobility, security, and sustainability. Ubiquitous sensors, paired with Artificial Intelligence, enable cities to monitor infrastructure, respond to residents’ needs, and optimize urban conditions dynamically. Given the increasing significance of Industry 4.0 in urban development, this study adopts a bibliometric approach to systematically review the application of these technologies within smart cities. Utilizing major academic databases such as Scopus and Web of Science the research aims to identify the primary Industry 4.0 technologies implemented in smart cities, assess their impact on infrastructure, economic systems, and urban communities, and explore the challenges and benefits associated with their integration. The bibliometric analysis included publications from 2016 to 2023, since the emergence of urban researchers’ interest in the technologies of the new industrial revolution. The task is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how smart cities evolve through the adoption of advanced technological frameworks. Research indicates that IoT and AI are the most commonly used tools in urban spaces, particularly in smart mobility and smart environments. Full article

Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) strategies are gaining increasingly more traction in almost every field of engineering, offering stakeholders advanced capabilities in system monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. Primary flight control actuators are safety-critical elements within aircraft flight control systems (FCSs), and currently, they are mainly based on Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) or Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHSAs). Despite the widespread diffusion of PHM methodologies, the application of these technologies for EHAs is still somewhat limited, and the available information is often restricted to the industrial sector. To fill this gap, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art EHA PHM strategies for aerospace applications, as well as their limitations and further developments through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An objective and clear methodology, combined with the use of attractive and informative graphics, guides the reader towards a thorough investigation of the state of the art, as well as the challenges in the field that limit a wider implementation. It is deemed that the information presented in this review will be useful for new researchers and industry engineers as it provides indications for conducting research in this specific and still not very investigated sector. The plant-based oil industry contributes significantly to food waste/by-products in the form of underutilized biomass, including oil pomace, cake/meal, seeds, peels, wastewater, etc. These waste/by-products contain a significant quantity of nutritious and bioactive compounds (phenolics, lignans, flavonoids, dietary fiber, proteins, and essential minerals) with proven health-promoting effects. The utilization of them as natural, cost-effective, and food-grade functional ingredients in novel food formulations holds considerable potential. This review highlights the potential of waste/by-products generated during plant-based oil processing as a promising source of bioactive compounds and covers systematic research, including recent studies focusing on innovative extraction and processing techniques. It also sheds light on their promising potential for valorization as food ingredients, with a focus on specific examples of food fortification. Furthermore, the potential for value creation in the food industry is emphasized, taking into account associated challenges and limitations, as well as future perspectives. Overall, the current information suggests that the valorization of plant-based oil industry waste and by-products for use in the food industry could substantially reduce malnutrition and poverty, generate favorable health outcomes, mitigate environmental concerns, and enhance economic profit in a sustainable way by developing health-promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems. Introduction: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting several organs and systems, including the pancreas, colon, respiratory system, and reproductive system. The detection of a growing number of CFTR variants and genotypes has contributed to an increase in the CF population which, in turn, has had an impact on the overall statistics regarding the prognosis and outcome of the condition. Given the increase in life expectancy, it is critical to better predict outcomes and prognosticate in CF. Thus, each person’s choice to aggressively treat specific disease components can be more appropriate and tailored, further increasing survival. The objective of our narrative review is to summarize the most recent information concerning the value and significance of clinical parameters in predicting outcomes, such as gender, diabetes, liver and pancreatic status, lung function, radiography, bacteriology, and blood and sputum biomarkers of inflammation and disease, and how variations in these parameters affect prognosis from the prenatal stage to maturity. Materials and methods: A methodological search of the available data was performed with regard to prognostic factors in the evolution of CF in children and young adults. We evaluated articles from the PubMed academic search engine using the following search terms: prognostic factors AND children AND cystic fibrosis OR mucoviscidosis. Results: We found that it is crucial to customize CF patients’ care based on their unique clinical and biological parameters, genetics, and related comorbidities. Conclusions: The predictive significance of more dynamic clinical condition markers provides more realistic future objectives to center treatment and targets for each patient. Over the past ten years, improvements in care, diagnostics, and treatment have impacted the prognosis for CF. Although genotyping offers a way to categorize CF to direct research and treatment, it is crucial to understand that a variety of other factors, such as epigenetics, genetic modifiers, environmental factors, and socioeconomic status, can affect CF outcomes. The long-term management of this complicated multisystem condition has been made easier for patients, their families, and physicians by earlier and more accurate identification techniques, evidence-based research, and centralized expert multidisciplinary care. Flexible energy sources such as electric vehicles and the battery energy storage systems of intelligent distribution systems can provide system-wide auxiliary services such as frequency regulation for power systems. This paper proposes an optimal method for operating the local energy community that is based on two-stage scheduling. Firstly, the basic concepts of the local energy community and flexible service are introduced in detail. Taking LEC as the reserve unit of artificial frequency recovery, an energy information interaction model among LEC, balance service providers, and the power grid is established. Then, a two-stage scheduling framework is proposed to ensure the rationality and economy of community energy scheduling. In the first stage, day-ahead scheduling uses the energy community management center to predict the up/down flexibility capacity that LEC can provide by adjusting the BESS control parameters. In the second stage, real-time scheduling aims at maximizing community profits and scheduling LEC based on the allocation and activation of standby flexibility determined in real time. Finally, the correctness of the two-stage scheduling framework is verified through a case study. The results show that the control parameters used in the day-ahead stage can significantly affect the real-time profitability of LEC, and that LEC benefits more in the case of low BESS utilization than in the case of high BESS utilization and non-participation in frequency recovery reserve. Smart living is strongly promoted to enhance the quality of life via the application of innovative solutions, and this is driven by domain specialists and policymakers, including designers, urban planners, computer engineers, and property developers. Nonetheless, the actual user, whose views ought to be considered during the design and development of smart living systems, has received little attention. Thus, this study aims to identify and examine the critical smart functions to achieve smart living in smart buildings based on occupants’ perceptions. The aim is achieved using a sequential quantitative research method involving a literature review and 221 valid survey data gathered from a case of a smart student residence in Hong Kong. The method is further integrated with descriptive statistics, the Kruskal–Walli’s test, and the criticality test. The results were validated via a post-survey with related experts. Twenty-six critical smart functions for smart living were revealed, with the top three including the ability to protect personal data and information privacy, provide real-time safety and security, and the ability to be responsive to users’ needs. A need was discovered to consider the context of buildings during the design of smart living systems, and the recommendation is for professionals to understand the kind of digital technology to be integrated into a building by strongly considering the context of the building and how smart living will be achieved within it based on users’ perceptions. The study provides valuable insights into the occupants’ perceptions of critical smart features/functions for policymakers and practitioners to consider in the construction of smart living systems, specifically students’ smart buildings. This study contributes to knowledge by identifying the critical smart functions to achieve smart living based on occupants’ perceptions of smart living by considering the specific context of a smart student building facility constructed in Hong Kong. The parameter identification of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) serves as a fundamental basis for achieving high-precision motion control, state monitoring, and system development. Currently, AUV parameter identification typically relies on the complete motion information obtained from onboard sensors. However, in practical applications, it is often challenging to accurately measure key state variables such as velocity and angular velocity, resulting in incomplete measurement data that compromises identification accuracy and model reliability. This issue is particularly pronounced in vertical motion tasks involving low-speed, large pitch angles, and highly maneuverable conditions, where the strong coupling and nonlinear characteristics of underwater vehicles become more significant. Traditional hydrodynamic models based on full-state measurements often suffer from limited descriptive capability and difficulties in parameter estimation under such conditions. To address these challenges, this study investigates a parameter identification method for AUVs operating under vertical, large-amplitude maneuvers with constrained measurement information. A control autoregressive (CAR) model-based identification approach is derived, which requires only pitch angle, vertical velocity, and vertical position data, thereby reducing the dependence on complete state observations. To overcome the limitations of the conventional Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm—namely, its slow convergence and low accuracy under rapidly changing conditions—a Multi-Innovation Least Squares (MILS) algorithm is proposed to enable the efficient estimation of nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics in complex dynamic environments. The simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, demonstrating high identification accuracy and robustness in scenarios involving large pitch angles and rapid maneuvering. The results confirm that the combined use of the CAR model and MILS algorithm significantly enhances model adaptability and accuracy, providing a solid data foundation and theoretical support for the design of AUV control systems in complex operational environments. In this paper, a joint Matching Field Processing (MFP) Algorithm based on horizontal uniform circular array (UCA) is proposed for three-dimensional position of underwater wrecked targets. Firstly, a Marine search and rescue position model based on Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) and matching field quadratic joint Algorithm was proposed. Secondly, an MVDR beamforming method based on pre-Kalman filtering is designed to refine the real-time DOA estimation of the desired signal and the interference source, and the sound source azimuth is determined for prepositioning. The antenna array weights are dynamically adjusted according to the filtered DOA information. Finally, the Adaptive Matching Field Algorithm (AMFP) used the DOA information to calculate the range and depth of the lost target, and obtained the range and depth estimates. Thus, the 3D position of the lost underwater target is jointly estimated. This method alleviates the angle ambiguity problem and does not require a computationally intensive 2D spectral search. The simulation results show that the proposed method can better realise underwater three-dimensional positioning under certain signal-to-noise ratio conditions. When there is no error in the sensor coordinates, the positioning error is smaller than that of the baseline method as the SNR increases. When the SNR is 0 dB, with the increase in the sensor coordinate error, the target location error increases but is smaller than the error amplitude of the benchmark Algorithm. The experimental results verify the robustness of the proposed framework in the hierarchical ocean environment, which provides a practical basis for the deployment of rapid response underwater positioning systems in maritime search and rescue scenarios. The integration of large-scale wind power clusters significantly reduces the inertia level of the power system, increasing the risk of frequency instability. Accurately assessing the equivalent virtual inertia of wind farms is critical for grid stability. Addressing the dual bottlenecks in existing inertia assessment methods, where physics-based modeling requires full control transparency and data-driven approaches lack interpretability for inertia response analysis, thus failing to reconcile commercial confidentiality constraints with analytical needs, this paper proposes a symbolic regression framework for inertia evaluation in doubly fed wind farms with limited control information constraints. First, a dynamic model for the inertia response of DFIG wind farms is established, and a mathematical expression for the equivalent virtual inertia time constant under different control strategies is derived. Based on this, a nonlinear function library reflecting frequency-active power dynamic is constructed, and a symbolic regression model representing the system’s inertia response characteristics is established by correlating operational data. Then, sparse relaxation optimization is applied to identify unknown parameters, allowing for the quantification of the wind farm’s equivalent virtual inertia. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated in an IEEE three-machine nine-bus system containing a doubly fed wind power cluster. Case studies show that the proposed method can fully utilize prior model knowledge and operational data to accurately assess the system’s inertia level with low computational complexity. Full article

With the increasing deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in indoor environments, the demand for high-precision six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DoF) localization has grown significantly. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has emerged as a key enabler for indoor UAV navigation due to its robustness against multipath effects and high-accuracy ranging capabilities. However, conventional UWB-based systems primarily rely on range measurements, operate at low measurement frequencies, and are incapable of providing attitude information. This paper proposes a tightly coupled error-state extended Kalman filter (TC–ESKF)-based UWB/inertial measurement unit (IMU) fusion framework. To address the challenge of initial state acquisition, a weighted nonlinear least squares (WNLS)-based initialization algorithm is proposed to rapidly estimate the UAV’s initial position and attitude under static conditions. During dynamic navigation, the system integrates time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) and angle-of-arrival (AOA) measurements obtained from the UWB module to refine the state estimates, thereby enhancing both positioning accuracy and attitude stability. The proposed system is evaluated through simulations and real-world indoor flight experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms representative fusion algorithms in 3D positioning and yaw estimation accuracy. Full article
