As an important industrial organizational form in the era of the digital economy, digital industry agglomeration exerts a profound impact on urban ecological resilience. Using panel data of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this study measures the level of digital industry agglomeration by means of the location entropy method, and constructs an urban ecological resilience evaluation system based on the “Pressure-State-Response (PSR)” model. It systematically examines the impact effects and action mechanisms of digital industry agglomeration on urban ecological resilience. The results show that: (1) The spatio-temporal evolution of the two presents a gradient pattern of “eastern leadership and central-western catch-up”, and their spatial correlation deepens over time, with the synergy maturity in the eastern region being significantly higher than that in the central and western regions. (2) Digital industry agglomeration significantly promotes the improvement in urban ecological resilience, and this conclusion remains valid after endogeneity treatment and robustness tests. (3) The promotional effect is more prominent in central cities, coastal cities, and key environmental protection cities, whose advantages stem from digital infrastructure and innovation endowments, industrial synergy and an open environment, and the adaptability of green technologies under strict environmental regulations, respectively. (4) Digital industry agglomeration empowers ecological resilience by driving green innovation and improving the efficiency of land resource allocation, while the construction of digital infrastructure plays a positive regulatory role. Against the backdrop of urban renewal, the transformation and functional enhancement of Existing Urban Industrial Areas (EUIAs) play a crucial role. Focusing on the rational development of underground space in EUIAs, this study explores forecasting methods for the development demand of such underground space, aiming to alleviate the contradiction between the protection of industrial heritage and intensive land use in EUIAs. This paper systematically sorts out the forecasting methods for the scale demand of underground space. Firstly, through a literature review, two major categories of factors influencing underground space demand—driving factors and conditional factors—are summarized, and an indicator system consisting of 23 indicators is constructed. On this basis, the modified Delphi method is employed to screen 7 dominant indicators, including the protection value of industrial heritage, the spatial distribution of industrial heritage, existing underground space, development functions, rail transit, spatial location, and surrounding supporting facilities. Based on the matrix of industrial heritage protection levels and land use nature, the development potential of underground space is evaluated, and a demand level correction model is introduced. Demand intensity is quantified through expert experience-based assignment with reference to typical domestic cases, thereby establishing a demand forecasting model for the underground space scale in EUIAs. Finally, the model is applied to the Saint-Gobain Industrial Area. Through the analysis of its industrial heritage value assessment, land use planning, and location characteristics, the areas with demand for underground space are delineated and their levels are corrected, forecasting a total underground space demand of 224,600–454,600 m2. The research results provide a theoretical basis and methodological support for the underground space planning of EUIAs, and offer references for the development practice of similar regions. The global consensus on sustainable development hinges on the coordinated advancement of economic, social, and environmental dimensions, with high-quality development serving as China’s pivotal pathway for practical implementation. As the primary implementers, cities are confronted with the dual challenge of defining the level of high-quality development and mapping out clear actionable pathways. Therefore, unraveling the driving mechanisms of high-quality urban development is significant. This study constructed a high-quality development evaluation index system, employing a sustainable development index to measure Lianyungang City’s development level from 2008 to 2023. The interrelationships among driving factors were revealed through the coupling coordination degree model, entropy weight method, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The study indicated that innovation stood out as the primary contributor, with contribution rising from 0.09 (2008–2017) to 0.10 (2017–2023). High-tech enterprises and valid invention patents were core drivers of the innovation index’s rise, with weights of 30.35% and 28.92%. Innovation investment promoted the transformation of cities toward technology-intensive development models while effectively supporting Sustainable Development Goals such as industrial upgrading, environmental improvement, and livelihood enhancement. Overall, advancing high-quality urban development required focusing on innovation-driven strategies while catalyzing other areas of development to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Full article

Cross-border e-commerce, as an emerging trade format, offers new chances for optimizing industrial chains’ layout, enhancing economic resilience, and attaining high-quality development at the city level. In this context, treating the execution of the cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone (CBEC) as a quasi-natural experiment, this study subtly attests to how the CBEC affects urban entrepreneurship by using a difference-in-differences (DID) technique. The results exhibit that the CBEC greatly promotes urban entrepreneurship, which is supported by some robustness tests, including instrumental variable testing and placebo testing. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that in cities with more developed economies, stronger digitalization, richer cultures, sounder law rules, and better business environments, the benefit for the CBEC on entrepreneurship is more significant. Mechanism testing argues that the CBEC promotes urban entrepreneurship through talent aggregation and industrial upgrading. Precisely, the more concentrated high-quality talents are and the more advanced the industrial structure is, the higher the urban entrepreneurship. More importantly, the CBEC exhibits a spatial spillover effect on entrepreneurship, promoting local entrepreneurship while stimulating the motivation to imitate and learn in neighboring areas, thereby driving their entrepreneurship. The findings offer a viable decision-making guide for building a unified factor market and achieving regional coordinated development. Full article

Rural governance is a key means of promoting sustainable rural development and is gradually evolving toward interdisciplinary research across multiple scales. How should governments at all levels implement precise policy to achieve rural revitalization goals? To reveal the multi-scale characteristics of rural spatial governance, this study proposes theoretical hypotheses and constructs a three-level analytical framework encompassing the municipal, functional area, and township dimensions. Taking Nanning City as a case study, it comprehensively employs global and local spatial autocorrelation methods to quantitatively analyze the spatial differentiation patterns and governance effectiveness across the five dimensions of rural revitalization at different scales. The results indicate that indicators such as ecological livability, industrial prosperity, life affluence, rural civilization, and effective governance all exhibit significant clustering patterns at various scales, with notable differences in the intensity of clustering across these scales. Specifically, the ecological livability indicator exhibits the strongest spatial agglomeration at the municipal level (Moran’s I = 0.578), industrial prosperity and affluent living show the strongest correlations at the functional area level (with average Moran’s I values of 0.281 and 0.414, respectively), while rural civilization and effective governance display the most pronounced clustering at the township level (Moran’s I values of 0.363 and 0.350). The findings provide direct evidence for implementing differentiated and precise rural spatial governance in Nanning City and similar regions, while also contributing to the optimization of cross-level policy resource allocation. Future research should further integrate multidisciplinary perspectives and expand the analysis of multi-stakeholder participation mechanisms. Full article

The combined implementation of land consolidation and smart agriculture is crucial for food security and agricultural carbon neutrality. Using 2010–2024 panel data from 279 Chinese prefecture-level cities, this study constructs an integrated assessment system and examines impact mechanisms and spatial effects using dual machine learning, mediation analysis, and dynamic spatial models. Results show that the interaction between land consolidation and smart agriculture significantly enhances food security at the 10% significance level and promotes agricultural carbon neutrality. Mechanism analysis indicates that agricultural industrial agglomeration positively contributes to both outcomes, while technological innovation significantly promotes carbon neutrality but temporarily suppresses food security. Spatial analysis reveals limited direct effects on local food security but positive indirect and total effects on neighboring regions, with carbon neutrality showing positive direct, indirect, and total effects. After controlling for city fixed effects and quadratic terms, the synergy remains significant, indicating robustness. The study suggests strengthening coordinated governance and innovation-driven regional development to jointly advance food security and agricultural carbon neutrality. Full article

Urban agglomerations are concentrated production areas of new-quality productivity (NQP), and developing NQP is an inevitable requirement and obligation to promote the high-quality development of urban agglomerations. It is of great concern whether green finance (GF) can serve as a catalyst in promoting the formation and development of NQP in urban agglomerations. This study selects panel data from 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration spanning 2011–2023 to construct a comprehensive indicator system for NQP based on the composition, quality, and function of productive factors in the urban agglomeration, and explores the impact effects, mechanisms of action, spatial spillover effects, and heterogeneity of GF on the development of NQP using a two-way fixed-effects model, an intermediary effect model, and a spatial Durbin model (SDM). The empirical results indicate the following: (1) GF can significantly promote the development of NQP in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, and there is a significant positive spatial spillover effect. The above conclusions remain valid after a series of robustness tests and endogeneity treatments. (2) The mechanism tests find that industrial structure upgrading and environmental regulation play positive mediating roles in GF’s promotion of NQP development in urban agglomerations. (3) The impact of GF on NQP exhibits significant heterogeneity. In regions with higher levels of economic and financial development, as well as a higher degree of marketization, the promotional effect of GF on NQP is more pronounced. In terms of city size and geographical location, the empowering effect and spatial spillover effect of GF on NQP are more evident in prefecture-level cities and the northern plain area of the Yangtze River Delta. Therefore, it is recommended to implement differentiated GF policies to promote the development of NQP in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration through regional cooperation, green technology innovation, industrial transformation and upgrading, and environmental regulation. Megacity clusters are the key battlegrounds for carbon emission reduction in China, and the polycentric spatial structure of these clusters has a profound impact on their carbon emission intensity. This paper focuses on five major megacity clusters: the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Pearl River Delta (PRD), the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (MRYR), and the Chengdu–Chongqing (CY) City Clusters. We construct an inter-period panel dataset spanning from 2002 to 2023 and utilize an index of polycentric spatial structure, which equally considers both morphology and functionality. A fixed-effects model is employed, and the Lind–Mehlum U-shape test is applied to identify the nonlinear relationship. Additionally, a two-step approach is used to examine the mediating effect of industrial agglomeration, while interaction terms help identify the moderating effects of technological innovation and transport infrastructure. The results indicate a significant U-shaped relationship between the polycentric structure of megacity clusters and carbon emission intensity. When the polycentric spatial structure index reaches a specific threshold, carbon emission intensity is minimized, suggesting that a moderate degree of polycentricity is most conducive to carbon reduction. Mechanism analysis reveals that industrial agglomeration functions as a significant mediator, whereas technological innovation and transport infrastructure serve as critical moderators in this relationship. Based on these findings, we propose several policy recommendations: to guide the moderate adjustment of the polycentric structure of city clusters with stage-specific targets, optimize the mechanism of industrial synergy and transfer, differentiate the allocation of innovation resources, and achieve a fine-tuned alignment between the transport system and spatial structure. These measures will support the high-quality, low-carbon transformation of city clusters. Full article

Cybersecurity in radio frequency (RF) technologies has become a critical concern, driven by the expansion of connected systems in urban and industrial environments. Although research on wireless networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) has advanced, comprehensive studies that provide a global and integrated view of cybersecurity development in this field remain limited. This work presents a scientometric and systematic review of international publications from 2009 to 2025, integrating the PRISMA protocol with semantic screening supported by a Large Language Model to enhance classification accuracy and reproducibility. The analysis identified two interdependent axes: one focusing on signal integrity and authentication in GNSS systems and cellular networks; the other addressing the resilience of IoT networks, both strongly associated with spoofing and jamming, as well as replay, relay, eavesdropping, and man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks. The results highlight the relevance of RF cybersecurity in securing communication infrastructures and expose gaps in widely adopted technologies such as RFID, NFC, BLE, ZigBee, LoRa, Wi-Fi, and unlicensed ISM bands, as well as in emerging areas like terahertz and 6G. These gaps directly affect the reliability and availability of IoT and wireless communication systems, increasing security risks in large-scale deployments such as smart cities and cyber–physical infrastructures. As chatbot technology becomes increasingly prevalent across a wide range of industries, it is crucial to explore the factors that shape user satisfaction with this AI-driven innovation. This research provides insights into how age and gender impact user perceptions and engagement with AI-driven health technologies in Saudi Arabia. The information systems success model has been utilised to determine the effect of age and gender on user satisfaction. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed in two hospitals in Makkah City, Saudi Arabia, and 527 responses were collected from chatbot users. Structural equation modelling via analysis of moment structures validated the model constructs. The findings revealed that the privacy issue on user satisfaction has been significantly greater with males than with females. However, the correlation between user satisfaction and continuance usage intention, as well as net benefits, has been much higher among the females. Also, notable differences were found between user satisfaction and net benefits and continuance usage intention and net benefits, especially when comparing younger and older participants. Across all age groups, user satisfaction consistently emerged as a central driver of continuance usage intention and net benefits, underscoring the importance of fostering satisfaction to enhance the effectiveness of AI-driven chatbots in digital health services. This study can serve as a guide to highlight the importance of chatbot user satisfaction and provide implications, limitations, and future research opportunities. Full article

PM2.5 pollution has become one of the major environmental issues in Shandong Province in recent years. High concentrations of PM2.5 not only reduce atmospheric visibility but also induce respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and significantly increase health risks. Source apportionment of PM2.5 is important for policy makers to determine control strategies. This study analyzed regional and sectoral PM2.5 sources across 17 Shandong cities during the 2017–2018 winter heating season, which is selected because it is representative of severe air pollution with an average PM2.5 of 65.75 μg/m3 and hourly peak exceeding 250 μg/m3. This air pollution episode aligned with key control policies, where seven major cities implemented steel capacity reduction and coal-to-gas/electric heating, as a baseline for evaluating emission reduction effectiveness. The particulate matter source apportionment technology in the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions (CAMx) was applied to simulate the source contributions to PM2.5 in 17 cities from different regions and sectors including industry, residence, transportation, and coal-burning power plants. The meteorological fields required for the CAMx model were generated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The results showed that all cities besides Dezhou city in Shandong Province contributed PM2.5 locally, varying from 39% to 53%. The emissions from Hebei province have a large impact on the PM2.5 concentrations in Shandong Province. The non-local industrial and residential sources in Shandong Province accounted for the prominent proportion of local PM2.5 in all cities. The contribution of non-local industrial sources to PM2.5 in Heze City was up to 56.99%. As for Zibo City, the largest contribution of PM2.5 was from non-local residential sources, around 56%. Additionally, the local industrial and residential sources in Jinan and Rizhao cities had relatively more contributions to the local PM2.5 concentrations compared to the other cities in Shandong Province. Finally, the emission reduction effects were evaluated by applying different reduction ratios of local industrial and transportation sources, with decreases in PM2.5 concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 26 µg/m3 in each city. The industrial heritage of the Third Front construction (hereafter referred to as Third Front industrial heritage) serves as a significant physical manifestation of China’s urban society, economy, and culture during a unique historical period. Its widespread abandonment not only constitutes a waste of social resources but also accelerates the erosion of collective memory surrounding the Third Front initiative. As one of Sichuan Province’s (including present-day Chongqing) key Third Front construction regions during that era, Guangyuan City possesses a substantial legacy of Third Front industrial heritage sites. These sites are predominantly idle and face ongoing risks of deterioration, necessitating comprehensive and systematic research into their classification, protection, and regeneration. This paper focuses on 39 Third Front industrial heritage sites in Guangyuan City, employing architectural typology to construct a ‘type-medium-value’ research framework integrating field research with strategic distribution analysis at the urban level, spatial form analysis at the settlement level, and spatial combination analysis at the building level to quantitatively identify and qualitatively deconstruct the spatial logic of these sites. This enables the analysis of the functional characteristics, structural logic, and spatial intent embodied by different types, thereby exploring the multidimensional value implications of Third Front industrial heritage through this value medium. Ultimately, this research proposes targeted adaptive mechanisms and revitalisation pathways for Third Front industrial heritage. It aims to promote the cultural legacy of this heritage and perpetuate the Third Front spirit within the context of strengthening the Chinese national community consciousness in the new era, while aligning with the Party and state’s development strategies. This approach aims to provide a reference for revitalising and utilising Third Front industrial heritage in other underdeveloped regions. Full article

The Role of Urban Gardening in the Maintenance of Rural Landscape Heritage in a Large City: Case Study of Brno Metropolitan Area, Czech Republic

The territorial development of the city of Brno during the 19th–21st centuries meant not only the growth of built-up areas (residential, industrial, commercial), but also the absorbing of segments of the ancient rural agricultural landscape. Within the current borders of the city of Brno, a number of green areas have been preserved, which have spontaneously developed from the original agricultural landscape, without being the result of urban planning. In half of the cases (17 out of a total of 34), they have still preserved the traditional small-scale division of land. Among the 10 medium-sized Moravian cities (between 30,000 and 400,000 inhabitants) in the historical region of Moravia in the east of the Czech Republic, the presence of 34 remnants of the ancient rural landscape in the city of Brno is quite exceptional (in Ostrava only 1; in other cities 0). The subject of the research is the inventory of such segments within the city borders and an attempt to explain their location in the city, state, focusing on the role of natural factors, land ownership and personal and recreational interests of residents. Segments of the ancient rural cultural landscape were identified by comparing the current landscape on aerial photographs with the landscape image on cadastral maps from the 1820s–1830s. Additional data on their natural and cultural properties were obtained through archival and field research. The segments were classified according to their degree of preservation and forms of threat. The results show that the remains of the ancient rural cultural landscape in the city of Brno have generally been preserved in locations that, due to the slope of the slopes, unsuitable building subsoil and poor soil, but locally on warm southern slopes, were not suitable for construction for the time being. Urban gardening contributes to their preservation and these areas are part of the city’s greenery. However, urban gardening also contributes to the destruction of these remnants. In 17 cases, the land was completely re-divided, built up with recreational facilities and overgrown with trees due to poor care. Another 17 locations are threatened by this process due to ignorance of their historical value, although this is essentially a positive development in terms of benefits for the city’s residents—land users. Although the Master Plan of the city of Brno foresees the existence of garden colonies in the future, it does not address the importance of the best-preserved segments as historical heritage. Community agriculture can play a positive role in maintaining segments of rural heritage within the city. Full article

Infrastructure Barriers to the Electrification of Vehicle Fleets in Russian Cities

Switching to electric vehicles (EVs) could help reduce air pollution in cities. This is especially important for cities in Russia that have grown quickly because of industry, like those in Siberia, where environmental problems are particularly acute. However, several factors continue to hinder the rapid expansion of EVs on the market, such as an additional strain on the energy infrastructure, which threatens to cause power outages. This study proposes a model for estimating the electricity consumption by EVs in the largest Russian cities, taking into account the technical characteristics of the EV fleet and climatic conditions. The calculations indicate that if 15% of the current car fleet are replaced by EVs, electricity consumption in the 16 largest cities in Russia would increase by 2.2 TWh per year in total. The estimated additional demand in particular cities varies between 33 mln and 769 mln kWh per year, depending on the number of vehicles and the local climate. Furthermore, we conducted an intra-day simulation of electricity consumption from EVs in a conditional Russian city with a population of over one million people. Three scenarios for the power grid load have been developed: (A) the maximum scenario, in which all EVs have a battery level of 0%; (B) the medium scenario, where EVs’ state of charge is distributed between 0% and 100%, and (C) the minimum scenario, involving charging scheduling that allows only EVs with a battery level of 20% or less to charge. The findings show that replacing just 15% of the car fleet with electric vehicles will trigger an increase in current daily household urban consumption of 28.4% in scenario (C), 75.6% in scenario (B) and 141.8% in scenario (A). Consequently, even in Russia’s largest cities, the further proliferation of EVs requires large-scale investments in power infrastructure. An additional 1 mln kWh used by EVs per day may require $160.7 mln investments in energy facilities and urban distribution networks. These findings highlight the necessity of a more thorough cost–benefit analysis of widespread electric vehicle adoption in densely populated urban areas. Full article

Electric buses can help cities address environmental concerns, such as air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a cleaner city. The transition process from conventional fuel buses to electric buses is a growing concern for stakeholders, as industries and governments struggle to nurture the initial phase maturity of electric buses in the marketplace. This research examines the current state and development of electrification in public transport within a city, as well as the challenges and barriers encountered in adopting electric buses for electrification. Present research connects to the experience of cities that have already electrified their urban bus fleets. It relates to the role of charging technologies in cost and the implementation of battery and grid infrastructure in developing countries. It briefly presents the context of the Bus Rapid Transit System use and the electrification of public transport in Ahmedabad. Furthermore, policy recommendations for electric vehicle purchases are outlined based on service levels for sustainable transportation. Full article
