Improving construction site safety remains a critical challenge in Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing construction sector, where high accident rates and diverse labor forces demand evidence-based managerial interventions. This study investigated the influence of Managers’ Safety Perceptions and Practices (MSP) on Workers’ Safety Behaviors (WSB) in the Saudi construction industry, emphasizing the mediating roles of Workers’ Safety Awareness (WSA), Safety Competency (WSC), and Safety Actions (SA). The conceptual framework integrates these three mediators to explain how managerial attitudes and practices translate into frontline safety outcomes. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was adopted using a structured questionnaire distributed among construction workers, supervisors, and project managers. A total of 352 from 384 valid responses were collected, and the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) via SmartPLS 4. The findings revealed that MSP does not directly influence WSB but has significant indirect effects through WSA, WSC, and SA. Among these, WSC emerged as the most powerful mediator, followed by WSA and SA, indicating that competency is the most critical driver of safe worker behavior. These results provide robust empirical support for a multidimensional mediation model, highlighting the need for managers to enhance safety behaviors not merely through supervision but through fostering awareness and competency, providing technical training, and implementing proactive safety measures. Theoretically, this study contributes a novel and integrative framework to the occupational safety literature, particularly within underexplored Middle Eastern construction contexts. Practically, it offers actionable insights for safety managers, industry practitioners, and policymakers seeking to improve construction safety performance in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. The topic of environmental pollution by petroleum products is highly relevant due to rapid urbanisation, including industrial development, road infrastructure and fuel distribution. Potential threat areas include refineries, fuel stations, pipelines, warehouses and transshipment bases, as well as sites affected by accidents or fuel spills. This study aimed to determine whether organic and mineral materials could mitigate the effects of diesel oil pollution on the soil’s trace element content. The used materials were compost, bentonite and calcium oxide. Diesel oil pollution had the most pronounced effect on the levels of Cd, Ni, Fe and Co. The levels of the first three elements increased, while the level of Co decreased by 53%. Lower doses of diesel oil (2.5 and 5 cm3 per kg of soil) induced an increase in the levels of the other trace elements, while higher doses caused a reduction, especially in Cr. All materials applied to the soil (compost, bentonite and calcium oxide) reduced the content of Ni, Cr and Fe. Compost and calcium oxide also increased Co accumulation in the soil. Bentonite had the strongest reducing effect on the Ni and Cr contents of the soil, reducing them by 42% and 53%, respectively. Meanwhile, calcium oxide had the strongest reducing effect on Fe and Co accumulation, reducing it by 12% and 31%, respectively. Inverse relationships were recorded for Cd (mainly bentonite), Pb (especially compost), Cu (mainly compost), Mn (mainly bentonite) and Zn (only compost) content in the soil. At the most contaminated site, the application of bentonite reduced the accumulation of Pb, Zn and Mn in the soil, while the application of compost reduced the accumulation of Cd. Applying various materials, particularly bentonite and compost, limits the content of certain trace elements in the soil. This has a positive impact on reducing the effect of minor diesel oil pollution on soil properties and can promote the proper growth of plant biomass. Full article

With the rapid growth of elevator installations, conventional scheduled maintenance struggles to meet the dual demands of ensuring operational safety and cost control. This study proposes an innovative on-demand maintenance method that aligns with the Chinese policy directives on elevator maintenance reform. First, we conduct a historical fault cause analysis to identify the root causes of elevator entrapment incidents. Next, we establish an entrapment prediction model based on our historical data. Then, we design an elevator entrapment risk index report according to the prediction results. Finally, we formulate an on-demand maintenance plan that combines insights from the report with the conclusions of the cause analysis. Field implementation and comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed on-demand maintenance method outperforms the scheduled one. The result shows significant reductions in accident and maintenance workload, justifying the practical value of this approach for the industry. Full article

The construction industry has been troubled by a shortage of skilled labor and safety accidents in recent years. Therefore, more and more robots are introduced to undertake dangerous and repetitive jobs, so that human workers can concentrate on higher-value and creative problem-solving tasks. Nevertheless, although human–robot collaboration (HRC) shows great potential, most existing evaluation methods still focus on the single performance of either the human or robot, and systematic indicators for a whole HRC team remain insufficient. To fill this research gap, the present study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for HRC team performance in construction projects. Firstly, a detailed literature review is carried out, and three theories are integrated to build 33 indicators preliminarily. Afterwards, an expert questionnaire survey (N = 15) is adopted to revise and verify the model empirically. The survey yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.916, indicating excellent internal consistency. The indicators rated highest in importance were task completion time (µ = 4.53) and dynamic separation distance (µ = 4.47) on a 5-point scale. Eight indicators were excluded due to mean importance ratings falling below the 3.0 threshold. The framework is formed with five main dimensions and 25 concrete indicators. Finally, an AHP-TOPSIS method is used to evaluate the HRC team performance. The AHP analysis reveals that Safety (weight = 0.2708) is prioritized over Productivity (weight = 0.2327) by experts, establishing a safety-first principle for successful HRC deployment. The framework is demonstrated through a case study of a human–robot plastering team, whose team performance scored as fair. This shows that the framework can help practitioners find out the advantages and disadvantages of HRC team performance and provide targeted improvement strategies. Furthermore, the framework offers construction managers a scientific basis for deciding robot deployment and team assignment, thus promoting safer, more efficient, and more creative HRC in construction projects. This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

In manufacturing environments, the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential to prevent workplace accidents. Despite this need, existing PPE monitoring methods remain largely manual and suffer from limited coverage, significant errors, and inefficiencies. This article focuses on addressing this deficiency by designing a computer vision desktop application for automated monitoring of PPE use. This system uses lightweight YOLOv8 models, developed to run on the local system and operate even in industrial locations with limited network connectivity. Using a Lean UX approach, the development of the system involved creating empathy maps, assumptions, product backlog, followed by high-fidelity prototype interface components. C4 and physical diagrams helped define the system architecture to facilitate modifiability, scalability, and maintainability. Usability was verified using the System Usability Scale (SUS), with a score of 87.6/100 indicating “excellent” usability. The findings demonstrate that a user-centered design approach, considering user experience and technical flexibility, can significantly advance the utility and adoption of AI-based safety tools, especially in small- and medium-sized manufacturing operations. This article delivers a validated and user-centered design solution for implementing machine vision systems into manufacturing safety processes, simplifying the complexities of utilizing advanced AI technologies and their practical application in resource-limited environments. Impact of Hydrogen Release on Accidental Consequences in Deep-Sea Floating Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Platforms

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. Background: As intelligent systems increasingly operate in high-risk environments, understanding how they perceive and respond to hazards is critical for ensuring safety. Methods: In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of 60 real-world accident reports, 30 from process control systems (PCSs) and 30 from autonomous vehicles (AVs), to examine differences in risk triggers, perception paradigms, and interaction failures between humans and artificial intelligence (AI). Results: Our findings reveal that PCS risks are predominantly internal to the system and detectable through deterministic, rule-based mechanisms, whereas AVs’ risks are externally driven and managed via probabilistic, multi-modal sensor fusion. More importantly, despite these architectural differences, both domains exhibit recurring human–AI interaction failures, including over-reliance on automation, mode confusion, and delayed intervention. In the case of PCSs, these failures are historically tied to human–automation interaction; this article extrapolates these patterns to anticipate potential human–AI interaction challenges as AI adaptation increases. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for a hybrid risk perception framework and improved human-centered design to enhance situational awareness and responsiveness. While AI has not yet been implemented in PCS incident studies, this work interprets human–automation failures in these cases as indicative of potential challenges in human–AI interaction that may arise in future AI-integrated process systems. Implications extend to developing safer intelligent systems across industrial and transportation sectors. Full article

Despite navigation advancements in enhanced sensor utilization and increased focus on maritime training and education, most marine accidents still involve collisions with high human involvement. Furthermore, navigators’ knowledge and application of the most often misunderstood Rule 10 Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS) according to the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG) represents the first focus in this study. To provide insight into the level of understanding and knowledge regarding COLREG Rule 10, a customized, worldwide survey has been created and disseminated among marine industry professionals. The survey results reveal a notable knowledge gap in Rule 10, where we initially assumed that more than half of the respondents know COLREG regulations well. According to the probability calculation and chi-square test results, all three categories (OOW, Master, and others) have significant rule misunderstanding. In response to the COLREG misunderstanding, together with the increasing density of maritime traffic, the implementation of Decision Support Systems (DSS) in navigation has become crucial for ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and enhancing navigational safety in general. This study presents a structural approach to vessel prioritization and decision-making within a DSS framework, focusing on the classification and response of the own vessel (OV) to bow-crossing scenarios within the TSS. Through the real-time integration of AIS navigational status data, the proposed DSS Architecture offers a structured, rule-compliant architecture to enhance navigational safety and the decision-making process within the TSS. Furthermore, implementing a Fall-Back Strategy (FBS) represents the key innovation factor, which ensures system resilience by directing operator response if opposing vessels disobey COLREG rules. Based on the vessel’s dynamic context and COLREG hierarchy, the proposed DSS Architecture identifies and informs the navigator regarding stand-on or give-way obligations among vessels. Full article

Concrete is a fundamental material in structural engineering, widely used in critical infrastructure such as bridges, nuclear power plants, and dams. These structures may be subjected to extreme dynamic loads resulting from natural disasters, industrial accidents, or missile impacts. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of concrete behavior under high strain rates is essential for safe and resilient design. Experimental investigations, particularly spalling tests, have highlighted the strain-rate sensitivity of concrete in dynamic tensile loading conditions. This study presents a macroscopic 3D discrete element model specifically developed to simulate the dynamic response of concrete subjected to extreme loading. Unlike conventional continuum-based models, the proposed discrete element framework is particularly suited to capturing damage and fracture mechanisms in cohesive materials. A key innovation lies in incorporating a physically grounded strain-rate dependency directly into the local cohesive laws that govern inter-element interactions. The originality of this work is further underlined by the validation of the discrete element model under dynamic tensile loading through the simulation of spalling tests on normalstrength concrete at strain rates representative of severe impact scenarios (30–115 s−1). After calibrating the model under quasi-static loading, the simulations accurately reproduce key experimental outcomes, including rear-face velocity profiles and failure characteristics. Combined with prior validations under high confining pressure, this study reinforces the capability of the discrete element method for modeling concrete subjected to extreme dynamic loading, offering a robust tool for predictive structural assessment and design. Modeling accident investigation reports is crucial for elucidating accident causation mechanisms, analyzing risk evolution processes, and formulating effective accident prevention strategies. However, such reports are typically long, hierarchically structured, and information-dense, posing unique challenges for existing language models. To address these domain-specific characteristics, this study proposes SAFE-Transformer, a Structure-Aware and Format-Enhanced Transformer designed for long-document modeling in the emergency safety context. SAFE-Transformer adopts a dual-stream encoding architecture to separately model symbolic section features and heading text, integrates hierarchical depth and format types into positional encodings, and introduces a dynamic gating unit to adaptively fuse headings with paragraph semantics. We evaluate the model on a multi-label accident intelligence classification task using a real-world corpus of 1632 official reports from high-risk industries. Results demonstrate that SAFE-Transformer effectively captures hierarchical semantic structure and outperforms strong long-text baselines. Further analysis reveals an inverted U-shaped performance trend across varying report lengths and highlights the role of attention sparsity and label distribution in long-text modeling. This work offers a practical solution for structurally complex safety documents and provides methodological insights for downstream applications in safety supervision and risk analysis. Full article

Mathematical modeling and computer visualization of hazardous zones of toxic substance cloud spread that occur during different accidents at industrial enterprises located near residential areas are in high demand to support the operational planning of evacuation measures and accident response. The possible chain-like nature of fires and explosions of containers with toxic substances inside increases the importance of predicting changes in hazardous zone parameters in real time. The subject of this study is a software tool created for the visualization of hazardous substance emission zones in real time, superimposed onto a development map to determine potential damage to human health and for the operational planning of evacuation measures. The proposed model takes into account variables such as the air temperature, wind speed and direction, the mass of the substance at each explosion and fire site, etc. C# and Visual Studio 2022 languages and an SQL database were used to create a software tool for visualizing the hazardous area. The testing of the calculation model and software used for the visualization of the hazardous zones of toxic substance cloud spread are presented on the basis of explosion cases involving a railway tank containing ammonia and the combustion of polyvinyl chloride at a chemical industry enterprise. The results confirmed the operability of the software and the prospects of its use in regard to the mitigation of the consequences of human-made accidents. Full article

Chemical leakage accidents in chemical industrial parks pose significant threats to personnel safety, particularly during evacuation processes, where individual behavior and evacuation strategies have a considerable impact on overall efficiency. This study takes a leakage incident at an alkylation unit as a case study. First, ALOHA5.4.7 software was used to simulate the influence of meteorological conditions across different seasons on the dispersion range of toxic gases, thereby generating an annual comprehensive risk zone distribution map. Subsequently, different evacuation scenarios were constructed in Pathfinder2024.1.0605, with the integration of trigger mechanisms to simulate individual behaviors during evacuation, such as variations in risk perception and peer influence. Furthermore, this study expanded the conventional application scope of Pathfinder—typically limited to small-scale building evacuations—by successfully adapting it for large-scale evacuation simulations in chemical industrial parks. The feasibility of such simulations was thereby demonstrated, highlighting the software’s potential. According to the simulation results, exit configuration, shelter placement, and individual behavior modeling significantly affect the total evacuation time. This study provides both theoretical insights and practical guidance for emergency response planning in chemical industrial parks. Full article

In the coal industry, miner safety is increasingly challenged by growing mining depths and complex environments. The failure to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a frequent issue in accidents, threatening lives and reducing operational efficiency. Additionally, existing PPE datasets are inadequate for model training due to their small size, lack of diversity, and poor labeling. Current methods often struggle with the complexity of multi-scenario and multi-type PPE detection, especially under varying environmental conditions and with limited training data. In this paper, we propose a novel minersPPE dataset and an improved algorithm based on YOLOv8, enhanced with Dilated-CBAM (Dilated Convolutional Block Attention Module) and DBB (Diverse Branch Block) Detection Block (YOLOv8-DCDB), to address these challenges. The minersPPE dataset constructed in this paper includes 14 categories of protective equipment needed for various body parts of miners. To improve detection performance under complex lighting conditions and with varying PPE features, the algorithm incorporates the Dilated-CBAM module. Additionally, a multi-branch structured detection head is employed to effectively capture multi-scale features, especially enhancing the detection of small targets. To mitigate the class imbalance issue caused by the long-tail distribution in the dataset, we adopt a K-fold cross-validation strategy, optimizing the detection results. Compared to standard YOLOv8-based models, experiments on the minersPPE dataset demonstrate an 18.9% improvement in detection precision, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed YOLOv8-DCDB model in multi-scenario, multi-type PPE detection tasks. This study explores the use of Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically GPT, for different safety management applications in the construction industry. Many studies have explored the integration of GPT in construction safety for various applications; their primary focus has been on the feasibility of such integration, often using GPT models for specific applications rather than a thorough evaluation of GPT’s limitations and capabilities. In contrast, this study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of GPT’s performance based on established key criteria. Using structured use cases, this study explores GPT’s strength and weaknesses in four construction safety areas: (1) delivering personalized safety training and educational content tailored to individual learner needs; (2) automatically analyzing post-accident reports to identify root causes and suggest preventive measures; (3) generating customized safety guidelines and checklists to support site compliance; and (4) providing real-time assistance for managing daily safety tasks and decision-making on construction sites. LLMs and NLP have already been employed in each of these four areas for improvement, making them suitable areas for further investigation. GPT demonstrated acceptable performance in delivering evidence-based, regulation-aligned responses, making it valuable for scaling personalized training, automating accident analyses, and developing safety protocols. Additionally, it provided real-time safety support through interactive dialogues. However, the model showed limitations in deeper critical analysis, extrapolating information, and adapting to dynamic environments. The study concludes that while GPT holds significant promise for enhancing construction safety, further refinement is necessary. This includes fine-tuning for more relevant safety-specific outcomes, integrating real-time data for contextual awareness, and developing a nuanced understanding of safety risks. These improvements, coupled with human oversight, could make GPT a robust tool for safety management. Full article
