Forecasting day-ahead electricity prices is a crucial research area. Both wholesale and retail sectors highly value improved forecast accuracy. Renewable energy sources have grown more influential and effective in the US power market. However, current forecasting models have shortcomings, including inadequate consideration of renewable energy impacts and insufficient feature selection. Many studies lack reproducibility, clear presentation of input features, and proper integration of renewable resources. This study addresses these gaps by incorporating a comprehensive set of input features, while these features are engineered to capture complex market dynamics. The model’s unique aspect is its inclusion of renewable-related inputs, such as temperature data for solar energy effects and wind speed for wind energy impacts on US electricity prices. The research also employs data preprocessing techniques like windowing, cleaning, normalization, and feature engineering to enhance input data quality and relevance. We developed four advanced hybrid deep learning models to improve electricity price prediction accuracy and reliability. Our approach combines variational mode decomposition (VMD) with four deep learning (DL) architectures: dense neural networks (DNNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) networks. This integration aims to capture complex patterns and time-dependent relationships in electricity price data. Among these, the VMD-BiLSTM model consistently outperformed the others across all window implementations. Using 24 input features, this model achieved a remarkably low mean absolute error of 0.2733 when forecasting prices in the MISO market. Our research advances electricity price forecasting, particularly for the US energy market. These hybrid deep neural network models provide valuable tools and insights for market participants, energy traders, and policymakers. Full article

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, characterized by low altitudes, high velocities, and strong ground signal reception, have become an essential and dynamic component of modern global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). However, orbit decay induced by atmospheric drag poses persistent challenges to maintaining stable trajectories. Frequent orbit maneuvers, though necessary to sustain nominal orbits, introduce significant difficulties for precise orbit determination (POD) and navigation augmentation, especially under complex operational conditions. Unlike most existing methods that rely on Two-Line Element (TLE) data—often affected by noise and limited accuracy—this study directly utilizes onboard GNSS observations in combination with real-time precise ephemerides. A novel time-series indicator is proposed, defined as the geometric root-mean-square (RMS) distance between reduced-dynamic and kinematic orbit solutions, which is highly responsive to orbit disturbances. To further enhance robustness, a sliding window-based adaptive thresholding mechanism is developed to dynamically adjust detection thresholds, maintaining sensitivity to maneuvers while suppressing false alarms. The proposed method was validated using eight representative maneuver events from the GRACE-FO satellites (May 2018–June 2022), successfully detecting seven of them. One extremely short-duration maneuver was missed due to the limited number of usable GNSS observations after quality-control filtering. To examine altitude-related applicability, two Sentinel-3A maneuvers were also analyzed, both successfully detected, confirming the method’s effectiveness at higher LEO altitudes. Since the thrust magnitudes and durations of the Sentinel-3A maneuvers are not publicly available, these cases primarily serve to verify applicability rather than to quantify sensitivity. Experimental results show that for GRACE-FO maneuvers, the proposed method achieves near-real-time responsiveness under long-duration, high-thrust conditions, with an average detection delay below 90 s. For Sentinel-3A, detections occurred approximately 7 s earlier than the reported maneuver epochs, a discrepancy attributed to the 30 s observation sampling interval rather than methodological bias. Comparative analysis with representative existing methods, presented in the discussion section, further demonstrates the advantages of the proposed approach in terms of sensitivity, timeliness, and adaptability. Overall, this study presents a practical, efficient, and scalable solution for real-time maneuver detection in LEO satellite missions, contributing to improved GNSS augmentation, space situational awareness, and autonomous orbit control. Greenhouse automation has become increasingly important in facility agriculture, yet multi-span glass greenhouses pose both scientific and practical challenges for autonomous mobile robots. Scientifically, solid-state LiDAR is vulnerable to glass-induced reflections, sparse geometric features, and narrow vertical fields of view, all of which undermine Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)-based localization and mapping. Practically, large-scale crop production demands accurate inter-row navigation and efficient rail switching to reduce labor intensity and ensure stable operations. To address these challenges, this study presents an integrated localization-navigation framework for mobile robots in multi-span glass greenhouses. In the intralogistics area, the LiDAR Inertial Odometry-Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (LIO-SAM) pipeline was enhanced with reflection filtering, adaptive feature-extraction thresholds, and improved loop-closure detection, generating high-fidelity three-dimensional maps that were converted into two-dimensional occupancy grids for A-Star global path planning and Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) local control. In the cultivation area, where rails intersect with internal corridors, YOLOv8n-based rail-center detection combined with a pure-pursuit controller established a vision-servo framework for lateral rail switching and inter-row navigation. Field experiments demonstrated that the optimized mapping reduced the mean relative error by 15%. At a navigation speed of 0.2 m/s, the robot achieved a mean lateral deviation of 4.12 cm and a heading offset of 1.79°, while the vision-servo rail-switching system improved efficiency by 25.2%. These findings confirm the proposed framework’s accuracy, robustness, and practical applicability, providing strong support for intelligent facility-agriculture operations. Full article

As the core space for students’ daily living and learning, the quality of the indoor wind environment and air quality in dormitory buildings is particularly critical. However, existing studies often neglect natural ventilation optimization under local climatic conditions and the multidimensional evaluation of health benefits, leaving notable gaps in dormitory design. Under the Healthy China Initiative, the indoor wind environment in university dormitories directly impacts students’ health and learning efficiency. This study selects dormitory buildings in Xuzhou as the research object and employs ANSYS FLUENT 2020 software for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, combined with orthogonal experimental design methods, to systematically investigate and optimize the indoor wind environment with a focus on healthy ventilation standards. The evaluation focused on three key metrics—comfortable wind speed ratio, air age, and CO2 concentration—considering the effects of building orientation, corridor width, and window geometry, and identifying the optimal parameter combination. After optimization based on the orthogonal experimental design, the proportion of comfortable wind speed zones increased to 44.6%, the mean air age decreased to 258 s, and CO2 concentration stabilized at 613 ppm. These results demonstrate that the proposed optimization framework can effectively enhance indoor air renewal and pollutant removal, thereby improving both air quality and the health-related performance of dormitory spaces. The novelty of this study lies in integrating regional climate conditions with a coordinated CFD–orthogonal design approach. This enables precise optimization of dormitory ventilation performance and provides locally tailored, actionable evidence for advancing healthy campus design. Full article

Wind power forecasting remains a major challenge for renewable energy integration, as conventional models often perform poorly when confronted with complex atmospheric dynamics. This study addresses the problem by developing a Spectral-Attentive Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (SA-STGCN) designed to capture the intricate temporal and spatial dependencies of wind systems. The approach first applies wavelet transform decomposition to separate volatile wind signals into distinct frequency components, enabling more interpretable representation of rapidly changing conditions. A dynamic temporal attention mechanism is then employed to adaptively identify historical patterns that are most relevant for prediction, moving beyond the fixed temporal windows used in many existing methods. In addition, spectral graph convolution is conducted in the frequency domain to capture farm-wide spatial correlations, thereby modeling long-range atmospheric interactions that conventional localized methods overlook. Although this design increases computational complexity, it proves critical for representing wind variability. Evaluation on real-world datasets demonstrates that SA-STGCN achieves substantial accuracy improvements, with a mean absolute error of 1.52 and a root mean square error of 2.31. These results suggest that embracing more expressive architectures can yield reliable forecasting performance, supporting the stable integration of wind power into modern energy systems. Full article

The A* algorithm is a cornerstone in mobile robot navigation. However, the traditional A* suffers from key limitations such as poor path smoothness, lack of adaptability to dynamic environments, and high computational costs in large-scale maps. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of 20 recent studies (2020–2025) on improved A* variants and their hybrid integrations with complementary algorithms. The improvements are categorized into two core strategies: (i) geometric and structural optimization, heuristic weighting and adaptive search schemes in A* algorithm, and (ii) hybrid models combining A* with local planners such as Dynamic Window Approach (DWA), Artificial Potential Field (APF), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). For each group, the mathematical formulations of evaluation functions, smoothing techniques, and constraint handling mechanisms are detailed. Notably, hybrid frameworks demonstrate improved robustness in dynamic or partially known environments by leveraging A* for global optimality and local planners for real-time adaptability. Case studies with simulated grid maps and benchmark scenarios show that even marginal improvements in path length can coincide with substantial gains in safety and directional stability. This review not only synthesizes the state of the art in A*-based planning but also outlines design principles for building intelligent, adaptive, and computationally efficient navigation systems. Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) rely on multi-sensor perception, such as radar, LiDAR, GPS, and vision, to ensure safe and efficient navigation in complex maritime environments. Traditional ant colony optimization (ACO) for path planning, however, suffers from premature convergence, slow adaptation, and poor smoothness in cluttered waters, while the dynamic window approach (DWA) without global guidance can become trapped in local obstacle configurations. This paper presents a sensor-oriented hybrid method that couples an improved ACO for global route planning with an enhanced DWA for local, real-time obstacle avoidance. In the global stage, the ACO state–transition rule integrates path length, obstacle clearance, and trajectory smoothness heuristics, while a cosine-annealed schedule adaptively balances exploration and exploitation. Pheromone updating combines local and global mechanisms under bounded limits, with a stagnation detector to restore diversity. In the local stage, the DWA cost function is redesigned under USV kinematics to integrate velocity adaptability, trajectory smoothness, and goal-deviation, using obstacle data that would typically originate from onboard sensors. Simulation studies, where obstacle maps emulate sensor-detected environments, show that the proposed method achieves shorter paths, faster convergence, smoother trajectories, larger safety margins, and higher success rates against dynamic obstacles compared with standalone ACO or DWA. These results demonstrate the method’s potential for sensor-based, real-time USV navigation and collision avoidance in complex maritime scenarios. Full article

Accurate recognition of estrus behavior in sows is of great importance for achieving scientific breeding management, improving reproductive efficiency, and reducing labor costs in modern pig farms. However, due to the evident spatiotemporal continuity, stage-specific changes, and ambiguous category boundaries of estrus behaviors, traditional methods based on static images or manual observation suffer from low efficiency and high misjudgment rates in practical applications. To address these issues, this study follows a video-based behavior recognition approach and designs three deep learning model structures: (Convolutional Neural Network combined with Long Short-Term Memory) CNN + LSTM, (Three-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network) 3D-CNN, and (Convolutional Neural Network combined with Temporal Convolutional Network) CNN + TCN, aiming to achieve high-precision recognition and classification of four key behaviors (SOB, SOC, SOS, SOW) during the estrus process in sows. In terms of data processing, a sliding window strategy was adopted to slice the annotated video sequences, constructing image sequence samples with uniform length. The training, validation, and test sets were divided in a 6:2:2 ratio, ensuring balanced distribution of behavior categories. During model training and evaluation, a systematic comparative analysis was conducted from multiple aspects, including loss function variation (Loss), accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, confusion matrix, and ROC-AUC curves. Experimental results show that the CNN + TCN model performed best overall, with validation accuracy exceeding 0.98, F1-score approaching 1.0, and an average AUC value of 0.9988, demonstrating excellent recognition accuracy and generalization ability. The 3D-CNN model performed well in recognizing short-term dynamic behaviors (such as SOC), achieving a validation F1-score of 0.91 and an AUC of 0.770, making it suitable for high-frequency, short-duration behavior recognition. The CNN + LSTM model exhibited good robustness in handling long-duration static behaviors (such as SOB and SOS), with a validation accuracy of 0.99 and an AUC of 0.9965. In addition, this study further developed an intelligent recognition system with front-end visualization, result feedback, and user interaction functions, enabling local deployment and real-time application of the model in farming environments, thus providing practical technical support for the digitalization and intelligentization of reproductive management in large-scale pig farms. Decision Support Systems (DSSs) are increasingly shaping high-performance sport by translating complex time series data into actionable insights for coaches and practitioners. This paper outlines a structured, five-stage DSS development pipeline, grounded in the Schelling and Robertson framework, and demonstrates its application in professional basketball. Using changepoint analysis, we present a novel approach to dynamically quantify Most Demanding Scenarios (MDSs) using high-resolution optical tracking data in this context. Unlike fixed-window methods, this approach adapts scenario duration to real performance, improving the ecological validity and practical interpretation of MDS metrics for athlete profiling, benchmarking, and training prescription. The system is realized as an interactive web dashboard, providing intuitive visualizations and individualized feedback by integrating validated workload metrics with contextual game information. Practitioners can rapidly distinguish normative from outlier performance periods, guiding recovery and conditioning strategies, and more accurately replicating game demands in training. While illustrated in basketball, the pipeline and principles are broadly transferable, offering a replicable blueprint for integrating context-aware analytics and enhancing data-driven decision-making in elite sport. Landslides are complex phenomena controlled by natural and anthropogenic factors. In recent years, the need to understand their dynamics has driven the development of methodologies for improving risk monitoring and mitigation. In this context, landslide occurrence dating helps identify triggering causes and critical thresholds. This study introduces a fully automated and objective methodology, implemented on the Google Earth Engine platform, which allows access to and processing of large volumes of satellite data online, speeding up analyses and facilitating method sharing. The procedure exploits the complementarity between changes in vegetation cover detected through vegetation indices and changes in radar backscattering, intending to narrow the time window in which the landslide occurred. In 45 out of 46 cases analyzed, the time interval of landslide occurrence could be correctly identified, with a mean temporal window of approximately 8 days (range—3–12 days), confirming the robustness of the approach across different geomorphological settings and landslide types. The complete automation of the workflow is among the most innovative aspects of the methodology, as it allows the script to be directly and consistently applied to a wide range of recent and vegetated landslides with sizes larger than about 10 Sentinel-2 pixels without requiring additional manual procedures. Addressing the challenges of inefficient prolonged trajectory resolution and unreliable dynamic obstacle avoidance for intelligent vehicles in complex confined environments, this study proposes an innovative hybrid path planning method. Its core novelty is the deep integration of an enhanced A* algorithm for smooth global planning with a fuzzy logic-controlled Dynamic Window Approach (DWA). The enhanced A* generates efficient and smooth global paths, while fuzzy control significantly improves DWA’s robustness in dynamic, uncertain scenarios. This hybrid strategy achieves efficient synergy between global optimality and local reactive obstacle avoidance. Simulations demonstrate its superiority over conventional A* or DWA in path length, planning efficiency, and obstacle avoidance success rate. Experimental validation on a physical platform in simulated complex scenarios shows an average trajectory deviation ≤ 7.14%. The work provides an effective theoretical and methodological framework for navigation in constrained spaces, offering significant value for practical applications like logistics and automated parking. Industrial process monitoring increasingly relies on sensor-generated time-series data, yet the lack of labels, high variability, and operational noise make it difficult to extract meaningful patterns using conventional methods. Existing clustering techniques either rely on fixed distance metrics or deep models designed for static data, limiting their ability to handle dynamic, unstructured industrial sequences. Addressing this gap, this paper proposes a novel framework for unsupervised discovery of operational modes in univariate time-series data using image-based convolutional clustering with composite internal evaluation. The proposed framework improves upon existing approaches in three ways: (1) raw time-series sequences are transformed into grayscale matrix representations via overlapping sliding windows, allowing effective feature extraction using a deep convolutional autoencoder; (2) the framework integrates both soft and hard clustering outputs and refines the selection through a two-stage strategy; and (3) clustering performance is objectively evaluated by a newly developed composite score, Seva, which combines normalized Silhouette, Calinski–Harabasz, and Davies–Bouldin indices. Applied to over 3900 furnace melting operations from a Nordic foundry, the method identifies seven explainable operational patterns, revealing significant differences in energy consumption, thermal dynamics, and production duration. Compared to classical and deep clustering baselines, the proposed approach achieves superior overall performance, greater robustness, and domain-aligned explainability. The framework addresses key challenges in unsupervised time-series analysis, such as sequence irregularity, overlapping modes, and metric inconsistency, and provides a generalizable solution for data-driven diagnostics and energy optimization in industrial systems. Rapid urban growth in Middle Eastern cities has intensified congestion-related challenges, yet traffic data-based decision making remains limited. This study leverages crowd-sourced travel time data from the Google Maps API to evaluate temporal and spatial patterns of congestion across multiple strategic routes in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a coastal metropolis with a complex road network characterized by narrow, high-traffic corridors and limited public transit. A real-time Congestion Index quantifies traffic flow, incorporating free-flow speed benchmarking, dynamic profiling, and temporal classification to pinpoint congestion hotspots. The analysis identifies consistent peak congestion windows and route-specific delays that are critical for travel behavior modeling. In addition to congestion monitoring, the framework contributes to urban sustainability by supporting reductions in traffic-related emissions, enhancing mobility equity, and improving economic efficiency through data-driven transport management. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically use the validated, real-time Google Maps API to quantify route-specific congestion in a Middle Eastern urban context. The approach provides a scalable and replicable framework for evaluating urban mobility in other data-sparse cities, especially in contexts where traditional traffic sensors or GPS tracking are unavailable. The findings support evidence-based transport policy and demonstrate the utility of publicly accessible traffic data for smart city integration, real-time traffic monitoring, and assisting transport authorities in enhancing urban mobility. Accurate prediction of transformer top-oil temperature is crucial for insulation ageing assessment and fault warning. This paper proposes a novel prediction method based on Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), kernel principal component analysis (Kernel PCA), a Time-aware Shapley Additive Explanations–Multilayer Perceptron (TSHAP-MLP) feature selection method, enhanced Bayesian optimization, and a Self-organized Time Series Forecasting System (SOFTS). First, the top-oil temperature signal is decomposed using VMD to extract components of different frequency bands. Then, Kernel PCA is employed to perform non-linear dimensionality reduction on the resulting intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Subsequently, a TSHAP-MLP approach—incorporating temporal weighting and a sliding window mechanism—is used to evaluate the dynamic contributions of historical monitoring data and IMF features over time. Features with SHAP values greater than 1 are selected to reduce input dimensionality. Finally, an enhanced hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm is used to fine-tune the SOFTS model parameters, thereby improving prediction accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms transformer, TimesNet, LSTM, and BP in terms of error metrics, confirming its effectiveness for accurate transformer top-oil temperature prediction. With the widespread adoption of intelligent technologies in animal husbandry, traditional manual feeding methods can no longer meet the demands for precision and efficiency in modern sheep farming. To address this gap, we present an intelligent robotic feeding system designed to enhance feeding efficiency, reduce labor intensity, and enable precise delivery of feed. This system, developed on the ROS platform, integrates LiDAR-based SLAM with point cloud rendering and an Octomap 3D grid map. It combines an improved bidirectional RRT* algorithm with Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) for efficient path planning and uses 3D LiDAR data along with the RANSAC algorithm for slope detection and navigation information extraction. The YOLOv8s model is utilized for precise sheep pen marker identification, while integration with weighing sensors and a farm management system ensures accurate feed distribution control. The main research contribution lies in the development of a comprehensive, multi-sensor fusion system capable of achieving autonomous feeding in dynamic and complex environments. Experimental results show that the system achieves centimeter-level accuracy in localization and attitude control, with FAST-LIO2 maintaining precision within 1° of attitude angle errors. Compared to baseline performance, the system reduces node count by 17.67%, shortens path length by 0.58 cm, and cuts computation time by 42.97%. At a speed of 0.8 m/s, the robot achieves a maximum longitudinal deviation of 7.5 cm and a maximum heading error of 5.6°, while straight-line deviation remains within ±2.2 cm. In a 30 kg feeding task, the system demonstrates zero feed wastage, highlighting its potential for intelligent feeding in modern sheep farming. Full article
