Stress is a major influencing behavior, health, and welfare in free-roaming dogs, particularly in environments characterized by unpredictability, social instability, and frequent human interactions. Although research on canine stress responses has expanded considerably, current knowledge remains fragmented across the neurobiological, physiological, and behavioral domains, limiting the development of comprehensive welfare assessment strategies. Importantly, free-roaming and shelter-housed dogs should not be viewed as entirely separate populations, since many shelter dogs originate from free-roaming environments and share similar stress-related experiences. This narrative review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current evidence on stress mechanisms in free-roaming and shelter-housed dogs The literature was explored across major scientific databases, and a total of 69 relevant studies were included. Particular emphasis was placed on the activation and regulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, associated neuroendocrine alterations, and their behavioral expression. The strengths and limitations of commonly used physiological indicators, including cortisol measured in blood, saliva, feces and hair, were critically examined in relation to their applicability in real-world contexts. Behavioral manifestations of stress, such as fear- and anxiety-related responses, aggression, withdrawal, and stereotypic behaviors, were analyzed as functional outcomes of neurobiological activation and environmental challenges. Environmental stressors typical of shelter conditions as well as the role of human–dog interactions in stress modulation are also discussed. By combining neurobiological, physiological, and behavioral perspectives, this review highlights the importance of multidimensional stress assessment and proposes a conceptual framework linking biological mechanisms with observable behavioral indicators of welfare across the continuum from free-roaming to shelter environments. These findings may support the development of evidence-based welfare assessment and management strategies for free-roaming and shelter-housed dog populations. Full article

Public discussion in Australia often presents pet cats as a major cause of wildlife decline, and cat management is frequently promoted as a major conservation response. However, this focus may draw attention away from other common and preventable recorded causes of threatened species rescue. Using the NSW Wildlife Rehabilitation Data Dashboard, we present the first statewide analysis of NSW wildlife rehabilitation records to specifically examine threatened species, rather than pooling threatened and non-threatened wildlife together. This dataset represented 52,475 individuals and 158 threatened species rescued from 2013 to 2024 in NSW. Rehabilitation data represent only animals that are found, reported, and brought into care, mostly in human-frequented environments, and should not be interpreted as estimates of total wildlife mortality, predation pressure, or ecological impact beyond the rehabilitation dataset. Outcomes were often poor: 24.1% were released, 58.5% died, and 17.5% had other recorded outcomes. The largest recorded category was Unknown (21.9%), which should not be interpreted as absence of cause, but as cases where a specific cause could not be assigned at the time of reporting to the dashboard. Among identified recorded causes, the most common were Entanglement (11.6%), Weather Event (11.4%), Abandoned/Orphaned (10.1%), Unsuitable Environment (7.3%), and Motor-Vehicle Collision (5.8%). Together, Unknown and these five identified causes accounted for 68.1% of recorded threatened species rescues. By comparison, all animal attacks combined accounted for 4.4%; dog-related rescues were more than three times as frequent as cat-related rescues, with cat-related rescues comprising 0.6%. These findings show that cat attacks formed a small proportion of recorded rescues, although overall ecological impact cannot be determined from these data. Prevention efforts targeting common and preventable recorded causes may help reduce the number of threatened animals entering care. Full article

Spermatogenesis is a highly coordinated biological process in which diploid spermatogonia undergo mitotic expansion, meiotic division, and terminal differentiation into haploid spermatozoa. This process is tightly regulated by intrinsic germ cell programs and extrinsic signals from Sertoli cells within the seminiferous epithelium. Among the signaling pathways governing male germ cell development, all-trans retinoic acid (RA), a bioactive metabolite of vitamin A, has emerged as a master regulator of meiotic initiation and spermatogonial differentiation in mammals. RA functions through nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs), which regulate transcriptional networks essential for germ cell progression, including the activation of Stimulated by Retinoic Acid 8 (STRA8), a key determinant of meiotic entry. Intratesticular RA homeostasis is maintained by a balance between synthesis via aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymes and degradation by cytochrome P450 family 26 (CYP26) enzymes, ensuring precise temporal and spatial control of germ cell development. While rodent models have defined core mechanisms of RA signaling, the canine testis provides a valuable comparative and translational system due to its physiological similarity to human spermatogenesis and relevance to reproductive management. Recent studies highlight conserved RA signaling pathways in dogs, including receptor-mediated transcriptional regulation, feedback control of RA metabolism, and post-transcriptional modulation via microRNAs. Importantly, pharmacological manipulation of RA signaling can reversibly disrupt spermatogenesis, supporting its potential applications in non-hormonal male contraception. This review integrates molecular, developmental, pharmacological, and comparative evidence and presents RA signaling as a central regulatory axis of spermatogenesis with important translational applications. Shuanghuanglian oral liquid (SHL) is widely used in companion animals and poultry, but its molecular mechanism in pneumonia–myocarditis comorbidity and heart–lung inflammatory crosstalk remains largely unclear. This computational study investigated the conserved AKT1/HIF1A-mediated immunoregulatory mechanism of SHL and its cross-species translational potential in veterinary medicine. Network pharmacology was integrated with GO, KEGG, and Reactome enrichment analyses, protein–protein interaction network construction, ADMET evaluation, cross-species sequence homology analysis (human, dog, cattle, and pig), molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation. A total of 61 active compounds, 251 putative targets, and 52 common targets associated with pneumonia and myocarditis were identified. These targets were mainly enriched in inflammation- and immune-related pathways, including TNF, IL-17, AGE–RAGE, and PPAR signaling. AKT1 and HIF1A showed high sequence conservation across species (85–98%). Key compounds exhibited favorable binding affinity to AKT1, and molecular dynamics simulation suggested the stability of the Baicalein–AKT1 complex. ADMET analysis suggested favorable pharmacokinetic properties and low predicted toxicity. These findings suggest that SHL may potentially alleviate pneumonia and myocarditis through modulation of the conserved AKT1/HIF1A axis and support its potential as a complementary therapeutic approach for managing heart–lung inflammatory diseases in multiple livestock species. This entirely computational study highlights promising mechanisms that should be further validated in vivo. Full article

Owning a pet dog provides significant mental and physical health benefits for humans. However, undesirable canine behaviors may result in bite or scratch injuries, leading to infection risks, psychological consequences, and potential dog abandonment. This study hypothesized that specific human–dog interactions are associated with unwanted canine behaviors and may increase the risk of injury in humans. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of dog-related bite and scratch injuries; assess dog owners’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and evaluate their associations with specific interaction patterns. Data were collected through an online survey of dog owners in Thailand. Most respondents were young women with a bachelor’s degree, residing in Central Thailand, and owning a single dog. Interactions associated with increased injury occurrence included grooming; administering medication; removing food or toys; interrupting dog fights; and close physical contact including petting, hugging, and kissing. Injuries in strangers were most commonly triggered by entry into the dog’s territory. Younger owners (18–34 years) were at increased risk, particularly during grooming and frequent petting. General awareness of rabies, bacterial infection, and wound management was adequate. However, there were still misconceptions about dog behavior. These findings highlight key risk factors and support targeted educational interventions to reduce injuries and improve animal welfare. Full article

Dog aggression toward humans represents a relevant public health issue. In Italy, small animal veterinarians are expected to contribute to the early identification of at-risk situations and to aggression prevention. This study aimed to assess, through a nationwide survey, veterinarians’ perception of this role, regulatory awareness, and clinical practices related to dog aggression prevention in Italy. A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2025 and February 2026 using an anonymous online questionnaire disseminated through provincial veterinary boards to private veterinarians working in small animal practice. A total of 1088 valid responses were analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and multivariable analyses. Almost all respondents reported frequent encounters with aggressive behavior, with more than 60% managing at least five aggressive dogs per year. Although 80% recognized an active preventive role for veterinarians, only 55% were aware of the current Ministerial Ordinance and 19% had ever submitted a report to public veterinary services. Specific training in behavioral medicine was independently associated with greater regulatory awareness and reporting behavior. Strong support also emerged for mandatory owner training and early behavioral assessment. A substantial gap persists between the preventive role assigned to veterinarians and the practical implementation of preventive tools. These findings support the need for strengthened behavioral medicine training and improved integration between private practitioners and public veterinary services. Full article

Introduction: The Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), an endangered scavenger, plays an important role in ecosystem health and corpse decomposition processes. However, populations have been declining throughout the Indian subcontinent, mainly due to anthropogenic influences. The present study explores how human activities affect the scavenging ecology and feeding behavior of Egyptian vultures in Gonda District, Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, India. Methods: The observations were conducted from January to June 2025. Systematic field observations were conducted at certain dumping locations. Point count sampling techniques were used to capture information on interspecific interactions, food type, feeding duration, and frequency of foraging. Results: The findings showed that vultures relied extensively on manmade food sources, mainly animal carcasses (57%), poultry waste (25%), and market rubbish (10%). Feeding activity peaked in the morning (08:00–11:00 h), coinciding with carcass disposal times at dump sites. Feral dogs, cattle egrets, and crows frequently engaged in interspecific conflict, limiting feeding time and food availability. Dependence on human-mediated food sources demonstrates both adaptation and susceptibility—adaptability in exploiting alternative resources, but vulnerability due to potential exposure to toxins, diminished food supply, and habitat disruption. Conclusions: The study underlines the critical need for better waste management techniques, construction of vulture feeding zones, and public awareness campaigns to support the long-term conservation of Egyptian Vultures in human-modified environments. Objective: Dog ear infections can have a variety of multifactorial causes, some of which are regarded as zoonotic. Thus, the present study was aimed at understanding the microbial causes, clinical evaluation, molecular analysis and associated risk factors of ear infections in dogs for their management. Methods: A total of 167 dogs were screened for ear infections based on history and clinical signs. An auricular swab was collected and processed with standard methods. Head tilting to the afflicted side, ear pain when palpated, pawing at the ear and purulent discharges from the ear canal were typical clinical symptoms. Results: A total of 13.77% of dogs were positive for ear infection, and among these, 13.17% showed unilateral right-sided ear infections. Dogs with pendulous ears (56.52%), Labrador breeds (34.78%), males (56.52%), dogs older than 4 years (52.17%), and during the monsoon season (65.21%) had higher rates of ear infections among the total dogs screened (n = 167) for aural infections. Anaemia, leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and elevated levels of total protein, cholesterol, BUN, and AST were observed in dogs with ear infections. Cytological analyses showed the presence of yeast cells and bacteria, along with hyperkeratosis and degenerated neutrophils. Mammaliicoccus sciuri, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Malassezia spp. were the organisms isolated. Bacterial isolates showed high sensitivity to gentamicin for the otitis treatment. Clinical Significance: This study highlights the need for preventive measures to curb the spread of potentially zoonotic pathogens such as Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella aerogenes, which can pose significant threats to both human and animal health. Tick-borne diseases are a growing public health concern in the Mediterranean. Brijuni National Park (BNP), a unique, highly visited island ecosystem characterized by increased large game host density and diverse Mediterranean habitats, presents an elevated risk for pathogen co-circulation. This study addresses the lack of spatial and epidemiological data to accurately assess human exposure risk in this environment. We performed a detailed geospatial and epidemiological risk mapping of pathogen co-circulation in BNP. A total of 587 hard ticks were collected across 26 georeferenced micro-locations (2020–2022). Ticks were morphologically identified and subsequently screened for six key zoonotic bacterial pathogens using qPCR. The Minimal Infection Rate (MIR) and a Co-infection Rate (CR) were calculated. Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping was utilized to map ecological determinants of risk. Ixodes ricinus was the overwhelmingly dominant vector (94.0%), peaking in spring, with activity absent in summer. Recorded diverse tick fauna also included Hyalomma marginatum (3%), Haemaphysalis punctata (2%), Ixodes frontalis (0.8%) and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (0.2%). Active circulation of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (Bbsl), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia canis were confirmed. Bbsl presented the highest MIR (3.05). The Co-infection Rate (CR) was notably high at 29.41%, with triple co-infections (Bbsl, A. phagocytophilum, E. canis) concentrated in cultivated mosaics and holm oak forests (Quercus ilex L.). The highest number of ticks was recovered from ecotone zones, accounting for 50.0% of the total catch, confirming them as high-risk interfaces. The absence of Rickettsia conorii may be attributed to the strict control/absence of its primary host (domestic dogs). The presence of the exotic vector H. marginatum was also confirmed. The high rate of co-infection and the spatial concentration of risk in specific habitats underscore an elevated and complex public health risk in BNP, closely linked to habitat structure and increased game host density. This research provides an essential geospatial framework for targeted ‘One Health’ management, prioritizing vector control in ecotone zones and dense forest refugia. Urgent surveillance for the exotic H. marginatum is warranted to monitor the potential risk of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. Full article

Dogs are key reservoirs of zoonotic infections, including Toxocara canis, a widely distributed parasite of major public health concern. In Vietnam, the parasite is highly prevalent in dog populations and humans. Epidemiological studies assessing infection and associated factors are essential to better understand transmission and to inform effective control strategies. We conducted a cross-sectional baseline survey to assess Toxocara infection in dogs in rural Vietnam. Fecal samples from 371 dogs were examined using centrifugal flotation (Sheather’s solution, specific gravity 1.2) and conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), alongside structured questionnaires on dog demographics and management. Using combined copromicroscopic and molecular methods, the overall prevalence of Toxocara infection was 44.7% (95% CI: 39.6–50.0). By microscopy alone, 29.9% (95% CI: 25.4–34.9) of samples were positive, while PCR detected Toxocara DNA in 41.2% (95% CI: 36.2–46.5) of dogs. Molecular analysis identified T. canis in 35.9% (95% CI: 31.0–41.0) and T. cati in 10.5% (95% CI: 7.7–14.2) of tested dogs. Dog age and deworming status were independently associated with PCR-detected T. canis infection. The elevated likelihood of infection among dogs that have never been dewormed highlights the importance of canine deworming. Questionnaire findings indicating suboptimal dog care and management highlight the need for community public health education to promote responsible ownership and reduce transmission risk. This baseline assessment provides essential evidence to inform targeted interventions and improve understanding of Toxocara transmission in endemic settings. Full article

An encephalocele is a rare congenital or acquired cranial defect characterized by herniation of intracranial tissue through a defect in the skull base. In human and veterinary medicine, these lesions are frequently associated with abnormalities in neural tube development or structural weakness of the cranial bones, resulting in the protrusion of brain tissue and meninges through anatomical openings such as the cribriform plate. Although this condition has been extensively described in human neurosurgical research, reports on dogs remain limited, and the clinical significance of surgical intervention in cases with communication to the nasal cavity remains unclear. In this case, a young American Cocker Spaniel presented with seizures, prompting advanced diagnostic evaluation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a protrusion of the intracranial tissue through a defect in the cribriform plate extending into the nasal cavity. Surgical resection of the protruding tissue was performed, followed by skull base reconstruction. Histopathological examination demonstrated nervous tissue with chronic inflammatory changes without evidence of neoplasia. The patient recovered uneventfully after surgery and remained free of seizure recurrence during follow-up. Surgical management may represent a viable treatment option for seizure disorders in young dogs, particularly when persistent cranio-nasal communication is present, and provides a clinically relevant comparative model for similar cranial base defects described in human pathology. Misiones, Argentina, holds one of the largest remnants of the Atlantic Forest, with almost 1.4 million hectares of native forest, representing a critical landscape for sustainable biodiversity conservation. However, connectivity across this ecoregion is increasingly threatened by habitat conversion, landscape fragmentation, and poaching pressures that extend beyond protected area boundaries, undermining long-term sustainability of wildlife populations. Using conservation detection dogs, we located, collected, and genetically confirmed 198 scats belonging to four game species: 20 lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris), 72 white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), 55 collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), and 51 Azara’s agouti (Dasyprocta azarae). Analyses examining species-specific habitat associations emphasized the importance of extending inference beyond point locations to encompass species’ home ranges, with native forest consistently identified as a key component of habitat use. The high prevalence of scats in mosaics of human-modified habitats outside protected areas, especially along their borders, underscores the importance of managing these areas as part of a broader sustainable landscape matrix. While native forest fragments outside of protected areas may serve as important refugia supporting species persistence, their contribution to sustainable management depends on reducing poaching pressure across these landscapes. There is an urgent need to expand antipoaching efforts beyond protected areas and across the Atlantic Forest in the Green Corridor of Misiones while preventing ongoing deforestation and the expansion of monoculture plantations. Achieving sustainable wildlife management in this region will require integrated strategies that promote sustainable land use, conservation planning, and rural development. Full article

Tooth structure anomalies, though not frequently described, can be observed in the external appearance not only of humans but also of dogs. The emergence of an oversized set of teeth is not solely an esthetic and health problem, but often also leads to behavioral issues. In the commonly available medical literature, there are many cases describing the occurrence and treatment of double teeth, both in the incisors and in the cheek teeth. In this article, the authors describe a clinical case of a one-year-old female Golden Retriever dog diagnosed with a double tooth in her permanent dentition. The complex morphology of the affected tooth posed a considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Surgical separation of the tooth was performed, requiring an individualized treatment approach and the adaptation of protocols derived primarily from human dentistry. This case highlights the diagnostic and clinical decision-making difficulties associated with such anomalies. It also emphasizes the importance of tailored therapeutic strategies for managing rare dental developmental abnormalities in dogs. The teeth were successfully surgically separated, and thus the present report contributes to the limited body of literature on double teeth in veterinary patients and provides practical insight into their management. This description of the first case of this type in veterinary dentistry aims to encourage readers to explore the topic of double teeth and demonstrates a non-standard way of thinking and dealing with such a tooth. The presented case is unique from both a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective. Previous publications have focused on these abnormalities as separate entities, failing to consider their simultaneous occurrence within a single tooth. The therapeutic approach employed also deserves particular attention. The most commonly recommended approach involves extraction of the affected teeth; however, in this case, an attempt was made to separate and preserve them, representing a novel clinical approach. Leishmaniasis is endemic in 99 countries worldwide, including the United States of America (USA). Its causative pathogens, Leishmania spp. have been detected in both humans and animals within the USA. Lately, we have comprehensively reviewed autochthonous leishmaniasis in humans in this region. Animals play a pivotal role in maintaining its endemicity in some endemic areas and regions, for example, dogs in Brazil and the Mediterranean. In this review, we thoroughly examine autochthonous leishmaniosis in dogs, cats, horses, and wildlife in the USA, and we synthesize integration across species, transmission pathways, the crucial roles the animals play, and the potential risk they pose to humans. The information is essential for public health and for the effective control and management of leishmaniasis through expanding reservoir and vector surveillance using One-Health approaches in the USA. A Retrospective Analysis of Wildlife Rehabilitation Trends in Lithuania over Two Decades

The primary aim of wildlife rehabilitation centres is the release of treated animals back into the wild after treatment. Data collected during rehabilitation can provide valuable insights into current trends and can help with conservation strategies aiming to reduce human-related negative impact. This review analyses records from past and currently operating wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centres in Lithuania over a 23-year period. Data were compiled for 7847 individual animals representing 216 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. The study evaluates patterns of seasonal admission, taxonomic composition, known causes of injury or admission, and rehabilitation outcomes. The results showed that 83% of cases involved birds, mammals comprised 16%, and reptiles were recorded only infrequently (0.52%). Admissions peaked in summer, comprising 42% of all cases. Injuries of unknown origin were the most common (55%). Among cases with identified causes, a substantial proportion were associated with human activities, including road accidents (5% of all cases), collisions with anthropogenic structures (4%), and attacks by domestic cats or dogs (3%). The presence of a specialized rehabilitation centre, together with active public involvement in the rescue of injured wildlife, contributes to release rates reaching approximately 30% of admitted animals. Datasets such as those analyzed in this study may contribute to improved preparedness for managing unavoidable human–wildlife interactions in the future. Full article
