Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a major contributor to honey bee colony losses, making effective monitoring essential for apiary management. Traditional DWV detection relies on hazardous RNA extraction followed by RT-qPCR, creating barriers for widespread surveillance. We developed an immunocapture RT-qPCR (IC-RT-PCR) method for screening DWV-A infections by capturing intact virus particles from bee homogenates using immobilized antibodies. Validation demonstrated strong correlation with TRIzol®-based extraction (r = 0.821), with approximately 6 Ct reduced sensitivity, consistent with other published immunocapture methods. Performance was adequate for moderate–high viral loads, while TRIzol® showed superior detection for low-dose infections. Laboratory-produced reverse transcriptase showed equivalent performance to commercial enzymes, providing cost savings. IC-RT-PCR eliminates hazardous chemicals and offers a streamlined workflow for surveillance screening where the safety and cost benefits outweigh the sensitivity reduction. This method provides a practical alternative for large-scale DWV-A surveillance programs, while TRIzol® remains preferable for low-level detection and diagnostic confirmation. Full article

This study assesses the quality of financial reporting in ten Central and Eastern European countries using a methodology based on natural language processing (NLP) techniques. 570 annual reports of companies listed on the main index on the stock exchanges of 10 Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, over the period 2019–2023, were evaluated to determine the degree of convergence of the following four measurable qualitative characteristics: relevance, exact representation, comparability and understandability. The main objective is to identify consistency in the quality of accounting information based on the application of an international financial reporting framework. The applied methodology eliminates subjective variability by implementing a standardized scoring system, aligned with the criteria developed by NiCE, using libraries such as spaCy and NLTK for term extraction, respective sentiment analysis and word frequency evaluation. The results reveal significant heterogeneity in all characteristics examined, with statistical tests confirming substantial differences between countries. The investigation of relevance revealed partial convergence, with three dimensions achieving complete uniformity, while the exact representation showed the highest variability. The assessment of comparability showed a significant difference between countries’ extreme values, and in terms of comprehensibility a formalistic approach was evident, with technical dimensions outweighing user-oriented aspects. The overall quality index varied significantly across countries, with a notable average deterioration in 2023, indicating structural vulnerabilities in financial reporting systems. These findings support initial hypotheses on the lack of homogeneity in the quality of financial reporting in the selected region, despite the implementation of international standards. Full article

The Role of Asprosin in Females in the Context of Fertility—An Exploratory Study

Background: Asprosin is a relatively recently discovered glucogenic adipokine secreted during fasting that plays an important role in various biochemical processes in the body, including those connected with obesity and insulin resistance. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the associations between selected hormonal, anthropometric, and lifestyle-related parameters and serum asprosin concentration. As studies concerning fertility and asprosin have so far been limited to men or women with PCOS, its role in the general female population remains largely unexplored. The direction of this exploration was thus pointed toward possible connections with female fertility. Methods: The case-control study group included 56 women of reproductive age (25–42 years), who were patients of the Reproductive Health Clinic and the Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Internal Medicine of the Medical University of Białystok, Poland. The levels of selected hormones, including anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and testosterone, body composition parameters, and a lifestyle parameter—night fasting duration—were assessed to test their associations with serum asprosin concentration. Results: A weak negative correlation was found between AMH level and serum asprosin concentration, suggesting a potential link between asprosin and ovarian reserve. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation was found between the percentage of total body water (TBW) and serum asprosin concentration. No significant associations were observed between the levels of the other tested hormones and serum asprosin concentration, or between body composition parameters or night fasting duration and serum asprosin concentration. The multivariate model designed in the study shows that AMH, TBW, and night fasting duration explain 23.4% of asprosin variability. Conclusions: Although the nature of the study is exploratory, the findings indicate that the role of asprosin in the female population—particularly its role in fertility—requires further research. Not only is the number of available studies on asprosin insufficient, but the results of this study partly contradict what is known about the hormone from previous studies, which were largely performed with male cohorts. In addition, the results of this study suggest that asprosin may indeed be involved in mechanisms related to female fertility, particularly those connected with ovarian reserve. Nevertheless, studies performed in larger, more homogeneous populations are necessary to confirm the role of asprosin in women, including its association with female fertility. Full article

Biotechnological research increasingly focuses on developing new drugs to counter the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains in hospitals. This study aimed to create bacterial lysates from antibiotic-resistant pathogens isolated from patients and medical instruments across hospital departments. Identification was performed based on morphological, cultural, and biochemical characteristics, as well as 16S rRNA gene sequencing using the BLAST algorithm. Strain viability was assessed using the Miles and Misra method, while sensitivity to eight antibacterial drug groups and biosafety between cultures were evaluated using agar diffusion. From 15 clinical sources, 25 pure isolates were obtained, and their phenotypic and genotypic properties were studied. Carbohydrate fermentation testing confirmed that the isolates belonged to the genera Escherichia, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Haemophilus, and Streptococcus. The cultures exhibited good viability (109–1010 CFU/mL) and compatibility with each other. Based on prevalence and clinical significance, three predominant hospital pathogens (Klebsiella pneumoniae 12 BL, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 3 BL, and Acinetobacter baumannii 24 BL) were selected to develop a bacterial lysate consortium. Lysates were prepared with physical disruption using a French press homogenizer. The resulting product holds industrial value and may stimulate the immune system to combat respiratory pathogens prevalent in Kazakhstan’s healthcare settings. Full article

Recent evidence suggests that nano-TiO2 particles improve antimicrobial and physical properties when incorporated into dental prosthetic materials. However, there exists a paucity of information regarding their impact on material properties when the prosthetic materials are 3D-printed over time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the time-dependent printability and surface property changes occurring in a 3D-printed denture base resin containing nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles. A 0.4 wt% concentration of 30 nm rutile TiO2 nanoparticles was ultrasonically dispersed into a denture base resin. Disks were printed weekly using a Form 2 SLA printer until printing failed. Printability, surface roughness (Ra), color difference (ΔEab), and translucency parameters were measured across timepoints. Surface roughness was assessed via profilometry, while color and translucency were evaluated using a spectrophotometer under standardized conditions. Print failure occurred at week 8, beyond which the resin could no longer reliably produce full specimens. Ra roughness decreased from 3.83 µm to 0.48 µm, which denoted a significant time-dependent decrease (ρ = −0.733, p = 0.016). Color difference with the unmodified control declined from 26.32 to 17.13 ΔEab units (ρ = −0.976, p < 0.001). All printed samples exceeded the clinically acceptable thresholds for both Ra (0.2 µm) and ΔEab (<3.7). Although the printability of the resin–TiO2 mixture was maintained for 7 weeks, mixture homogeneity declined over time. TiO2 additions to a denture polymer produced significant changes in surface roughness and color that were not clinically acceptable. Results from this study illustrate the time dependence required for retaining surface properties in 3D-printed dentures containing nano-TiO2. Full article

In the era of digital intelligence, digital media landscapes increasingly influence cultural tourism consumption. Consumerism capitalizes on tourists’ superficial aesthetic commonalities, constructing a homogenized media imagination that leads to collective convergence in travel decisions, which obscures aspects of local culture, poses safety risks, and results in fleeting local tourism booms. In this study, semistructured interviews were conducted with 36 tourists, and NVivo12.0 was used for three-level node coding in a qualitative analysis to explore the digital media attributions of conformist travel behavior. The findings indicate that digital media landscapes exert a “digital persuasion” effect by reconstructing self-experience models, directing the individual gaze, and projecting idealized self-images. These mechanisms drive tourists to follow digital traffic trends and engage in imitative behaviors, ultimately shaping the phenomenon of “group roaming”, grounded in the psychological effect of herd behavior. Statistical Physics of Fissure Swarms and Dike Swarms

Fissure swarms and dike swarms in Iceland constitute the main parts of volcanic systems that are 40–150 km long, 5–20 km wide, extend to depths of 10–20 km, and contain 2 × 1014 outcrop-scale (≥0.1 m) and 1022–23 down to grain-scale (≥1 mm) fractures, suggesting that statistical physics is an appropriate method of analysis. Length-size distributions of 565 outcrop-scale Holocene fissures (tension fractures and normal faults) and 1041 Neogene dikes show good to excellent fits with negative power laws and exponential laws. Here, the Helmholtz free energy is used to represent the energy supplied to the swarms and to derive the Gibbs–Shannon entropy formula. The calculated entropies of 12 sets and subsets of fissures and 3 sets and subsets of dikes all show strong positive correlations with sets/subsets length ranges and scaling exponents. Statistical physics considerations suggest that, at a given time, the probability of the overall state of stress in a crustal segment being heterogeneous is much greater than the state of stress being homogeneous and favourable to the propagation of a fissure or a dike. In a heterogeneous stress field, most fissures/dikes become arrested after a short propagation—which is a formal explanation of the observed statistical size-length distributions. As the size of the stress-homogenised rock volume increases larger fissures/dikes can form, increasing the length range of the distribution (and its entropy) which may, potentially, transform from an exponential distribution into a power-law distribution. Mushroom production is a sustainable practice but requires improvements, such as in Lentinula edodes (Berk) Pegler cultivation, which has high water and labor demands. In this context, this study proposed replacing the traditional primordia induction method by submersion with a water injection method. Two primordia induction methods (submersion and injection) and two cultivation block formats were compared: rectangular cube (2 kg) and cylindrical (3.5 kg). The substrate, composed of eucalyptus sawdust (72%), wheat bran (12.5%), rice bran (12.5%), CaCO3 (1%), and CaSO4 (2%), was inoculated with strain LED 19/11 and incubated for 80 days at 26 ± 5 °C and 85 ± 15% humidity. After this period, the blocks were washed and transferred to the production environment. Fruiting was induced either by submersion or water injection, and production was evaluated over four harvest flushes. The 2 kg blocks had higher yields with submersion (16.62%), while the 3.5 kg blocks responded better to injection (13.01%), showing more homogeneous production. Increasing the substrate quantity contributes to greater harvest stability across production cycles. Water injections proved to be a viable alternative, reducing handling and facilitating large-scale production. The use of this technique demonstrates great importance in reducing water use and also the need for labor in cultivation. Full article

The Alevis of Anatolia and the Balkans and the Alawites of Syria and southeastern Turkey are two distinct ethnoreligious communities frequently conflated in both media and scholarly literature, despite their divergent historical origins, theological differences, and varying sociocultural formations. While their shared histories of marginalization and persecution, certain theological parallels, and cognate ethnonyms contribute to this conflation, it largely stems from a broader tendency within mainstream Islamic frameworks to homogenize so-called heterodox communities without sufficient attention to their doctrinal and cultural specificities. This paper, grounded in a synthetic analysis of current scholarship, maps the key historical, theological, and sociocultural intersections and divergences between Alawite and Alevi communities. Situated within the broader framework of intra-Islamic diversity, it seeks to move beyond essentialist and homogenizing paradigms by foregrounding the distinct genealogies of each tradition, rooted, respectively, in the early pro-Alid movements of Iraq and Syria and in Anatolian Sufism. In addition, the study examines the communities’ overlapping political trajectories in the modern era, particularly their alignments with leftist and secular–nationalist currents, as well as their evolving relationship—from mutual unawareness to a recent political rapprochement—prompted by the growing existential threats posed by the rise of Sunni-Salafi Islamist movements. This article presents a novel mathematical formalism for advanced manifold–metric pairs, enhancing the frameworks of geometry and topology. We construct various D-dimensional manifolds and their associated metric spaces using functional methods, with a focus on integrating concepts from mathematical physics, field theory, topology, algebra, probability, and statistics. Our methodology employs rigorous mathematical construction proofs and logical foundations to develop generalized manifold–metric pairs, including homogeneous and isotropic expanding manifolds, as well as probabilistic and entropic variants. Key results include the establishment of metrizability for topological manifolds via the Urysohn Metrization Theorem, the formulation of higher-rank tensor metrics, and the exploration of complex and quaternionic codomains with applications to cosmological models like the expanding spacetime. By combining spacetime generalized sets with information-theoretic and probabilistic approaches, we achieve a unified framework that advances the understanding of manifold–metric interactions and their physical implications. Chronic musculoskeletal pain negatively affects patients’ quality of life, and pain perceptions may significantly influence rehabilitation outcomes. This study investigated the relationships among pain intensity, pain perceptions, and kinesiophobia in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain. No previous studies have examined these variables in combination. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 37 participants with non-specific chronic musculoskeletal pain for at least 6 months, affecting the neck (n = 8), lower back (n = 18), upper limbs (n = 5), lower limbs (n = 5), or shoulder (n = 1). The following validated tools were used: (a) Pain Beliefs and Perceptions Inventory (PBPI), (b) the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), and (c) the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ). Spearman r correlation analyses were performed. Total kinesiophobia scores were positively correlated with (a) total pain intensity (McGill score) (r = 0.37, p = 0.022), (b) present pain intensity (PPI) (r = 0.52, p = 0.001), (c) pain duration (r = 0.51, p = 0.001), (d) the “mystery” factor of pain perception (r = 0.41, p = 0.013), and (e) the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (r = 0.42, p = 0.009). The total pain perception scores were positively associated with the “fear of injury” factor of kinesiophobia (r = 0.36, p = 0.028). The McGill pain scores were strongly correlated with both PPI (r = 0.63, p = 0.001) and VAS (r = 0.51, p = 0.001). There is a significant relationship between pain perception and kinesiophobia levels in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Limitations of the study include a small and heterogeneous sample regarding pain localization. Further research is required using larger, more homogeneous populations to confirm the present findings. Fiber-reinforced and laminated composite materials, widely used in engineering applications, may develop periodic curvature during manufacturing due to technological requirements. Given such curvatures in widely used composites, static and dynamic analyses of plates and shells under loads, along with related stability issues, have been extensively investigated. However, studies focusing specifically on the static analysis of such materials remain limited. Composite materials with structural curvature exhibit complex mechanical behavior, making their analysis particularly challenging. Predicting their mechanical response is crucial in engineering. In response to this need, the present study conducts a static analysis of plates made of periodically curved composite materials using the Navier method. The plate equations were derived based on the Kirchhoff–Love plate theory within the framework of the Continuum Theory proposed by Akbarov and Guz’. Using the Navier method, deflection, stress, and moment distributions were obtained at every point of the plate. Numerical results were computed using MATLAB. After verifying the convergence and accuracy of the developed MATLAB code by comparing it with existing solutions for rectangular homogeneous isotropic and laminated composite plates, results were obtained for periodically curved plates. This study offers valuable insights that may guide future research, as it employs the Navier method to provide an analytical solution framework. This study contributes to the limited literature with a novel evaluation of the static analysis of composite plates with periodic curvature. Full article

The development of anode-free sodium metal batteries (AFSMBs) offers a promising pathway to achieve ultrahigh energy density and cost efficiency inherent to conventional sodium ion/metal batteries. However, irreversible Na plating/stripping and dendritic growth remain critical barriers. Herein, we demonstrate that separator engineering is a pivotal strategy for stabilizing AFSMBs. Through systematic evaluation of four separators—2500 separator (PP), 2325 separator (PP/PE/PP), glass fiber (GF), and an Al2O3-coated PE membrane, we reveal that the Al2O3-coated separator uniquely enables exceptional interfacial kinetics and morphological control. Na||Na symmetric cells with Al2O3 coated separator exhibit ultralow polarization (4.5 mV) and the highest exchange current density (1.77 × 10−2 mA cm−2), while the anode-free AlC-NFPP full cells retain 91.6% capacity after 150 cycles at 2C. Specifically, the Al2O3 coating homogenizes Na+ flux, promotes dense and planar Na deposition, and facilitates near-complete stripping with minimal “dead Na”. This work establishes ceramic-functionalized separators as essential enablers of practical high-energy AFSMBs. Full article

This study aimed to develop a functional powder using whey and milk matrices, leveraging the protective capacity of chia–alginate hydrogels and the advantages of electrohydrodynamic spraying (EHDA), a non-thermal technique suitable for encapsulating probiotic cells under stress conditions commonly encountered in food processing. A hydrogel matrix composed of chia seed mucilage and sodium alginate was used to form a biopolymeric network that protected probiotic cells during processing. The encapsulation efficiency reached 99.0 ± 0.01%, and bacterial viability remained above 9.9 log10 CFU/mL after lyophilization, demonstrating the excellent protective capacity of the hydrogel matrix. Microstructural analysis using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) revealed well-retained cell morphology and homogeneous distribution within the hydrogel matrix while, in contrast, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed spherical, porous microcapsules with distinct surface characteristics influenced by the encapsulation method. Encapsulates were incorporated into beverages flavored with red fruits and pear and subsequently freeze-dried. The resulting powders were analyzed for moisture, protein, lipids, carbohydrates, fiber, and color determinations. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and response surface methodology, highlighting the impact of ingredient ratios on nutritional composition. Raman spectroscopy identified molecular features associated with casein, lactose, pectins, anthocyanins, and other functional compounds, confirming the contribution of both matrix and encapsulants maintaining the structural characteristics of the product. The presence of antioxidant bands supported the functional potential of the powder formulations. Chia–alginate hydrogels effectively encapsulated L. reuteri, maintaining cell viability and enabling their incorporation into freeze-dried beverage powders. This approach offers a promising strategy for the development of next-generation functional food gels with enhanced probiotic stability, nutritional properties, and potential application in health-promoting dairy systems. Formulation, Optimization, and Comprehensive Characterization of Topical Essential Oil-Loaded Anti-Acne Microemulgels

Cutibacterium acnes is linked to the prevalent inflammatory skin disorder known as Acne Vulgaris (AV). Some topical agents exhibit unfavorable side effects like dryness and skin inflammation, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an increasing risk to effective AV management. This study develops and characterizes stable topical essential oil (EO)-loaded microemulgels with in vitro validated antimicrobial activities against C. acnes ATCC 6919, providing a solid scientific basis for their effectiveness. These microemulgels, with their potential to serve as an alternative to AMR-prone synthetic agents, could revolutionize the field of acne treatment. The MICs of the EOs (citronella, tea tree, and lemongrass) against C. acnes were determined. EO-loaded microemulgels were developed using a blend of microemulsion and carbopol/hyaluronic acid gel in a ratio of 1:1 and characterized, and their stability was observed over three months. The MICs of citronella, tea tree, and lemongrass EOs were 0.08, 0.16, and 0.62% v/v, respectively. The microemulgels were whitish and smooth, with characteristic EO odors. They demonstrated pH values ranging between 4.81 ± 0.20 and 5.00 ± 0.03, good homogeneity, a spreadability of 9.79 ± 0.6 and 12.76 ± 0.8 cm2, a viscosity of 29,500 and 31,130 cP, and retained stability at 4, 25, and 40 °C. EO-loaded microemulgels were developed with the potential of C. acnes management. The formulation shows adequate potential for further pharmaceutical development towards translational adoption in acne management. Full article
