Analysis of 3D-Printed Zirconia Implant Overdenture Bars

Dental implant components are typically fabricated using subtractive manufacturing, often involving metal materials that can be costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. This study explores the use of additive manufacturing (AM) with zirconia for dental implant overdenture bars, focusing on mechanical performance, stress distribution, and fit. Solid and lattice-structured bars were designed in Fusion 360 and produced using LithaCon 210 3Y-TZP zirconia (Lithoz GmbH, Vienna, Austria) on a CeraFab 8500 printer. Post-processing included cleaning, debinding, and sintering. A 3D-printed denture was also fabricated to evaluate fit. Thermography and optical imaging were used to assess adaptation. Custom fixtures were developed for flexural testing, and fracture loads were recorded to calculate stress distribution using finite element analysis (ANSYS R2025). The FEA model assumed isotropic, homogeneous, linear-elastic material behavior. Bars were torqued to 15 Ncm on implant analogs. The average fracture loads were 1.2240 kN (solid, n = 12) and 1.1132 kN (lattice, n = 5), with corresponding stress values of 147 MPa and 143 MPa, respectively. No statistically significant difference was observed (p = 0.578; α = 0.05). The fracture occurred near high-stress regions at fixture support points. All bars demonstrated a clinically acceptable fit on the model; however, further validation and clinical evaluation are still needed. Additively manufactured zirconia bars, including lattice structures, show promise as alternatives to conventional superstructures, potentially offering reduced material use and faster production without compromising mechanical performance. Understanding population connectivity and genetic structure is crucial for the effective management of exploited marine species. This study investigates the population genetics of the common European squid (Loligo vulgaris) across the Mediterranean Sea, focusing on samples from the Aegean Sea and comparative sequences from Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Atlantic coasts. A total of 67 COI mitochondrial sequences were analyzed, identifying 12 haplotypes and 27 polymorphic sites. Population-level genetic diversity, pairwise FST values, and haplotype network analyses revealed pronounced genetic differentiation in the eastern Mediterranean contrasting with the genetic homogeneity observed among Western populations. The low haplotype diversity observed in the Greek populations of L. vulgaris may be influenced by a combination of ecological and historical factors, as the Aegean region is recognized as a hotspot of endemism and historical population fragmentation. The results indicate the existence of at least two genetically differentiated clusters within the Mediterranean basin. This study advances current knowledge of the genetic structure of Loligo vulgaris by providing novel genetic data on populations from the eastern Mediterranean, offering valuable insights for future conservation and management strategies for the species. Background: The implementation of advanced agronomical strategies, including the use of antitranspirant, in order to mitigate the negative effects of environmental stress, particularly heat stress on plants, has become a focal area of research in the Mediterranean basin. This region is characterized by hot and dry summer that affects plant physiology. Methods: The experiment was carried out in Sicily (South Italy) on 12-year-old avocado cv. Hass grafted onto Walter Hole rootstock. Two subplots each of forty homogenous trees were selected and treated (1) with calcium carbonate (DECCO Shield®) and (2) with water (control) at the following phenological phases: 711, 712 and 715 BBCH. The climatic parameters were recorded throughout the year. Physiological measurements (leaf transpiration, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential) were measured at 105, 131 and 168 days after full bloom. Fruit growth was monitored, and physico-chemical analyses were carried out at harvest. Results: The antitranspirant increased photosynthesis and stomatal conductance and reduced leaf transpiration (−26.1%). Fruit growth rate increased during summer, although no morphological and qualitative difference was observed at harvest. PCA highlighted the positive effect of the calcium carbonate on overall plant physiology. Conclusions: Antitranspirant foliar application reduced heat stress effects by improving physiological responses of avocado trees. Full article

This study assesses the quality of financial reporting in ten Central and Eastern European countries using a methodology based on natural language processing (NLP) techniques. 570 annual reports of companies listed on the main index on the stock exchanges of 10 Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, over the period 2019–2023, were evaluated to determine the degree of convergence of the following four measurable qualitative characteristics: relevance, exact representation, comparability and understandability. The main objective is to identify consistency in the quality of accounting information based on the application of an international financial reporting framework. The applied methodology eliminates subjective variability by implementing a standardized scoring system, aligned with the criteria developed by NiCE, using libraries such as spaCy and NLTK for term extraction, respective sentiment analysis and word frequency evaluation. The results reveal significant heterogeneity in all characteristics examined, with statistical tests confirming substantial differences between countries. The investigation of relevance revealed partial convergence, with three dimensions achieving complete uniformity, while the exact representation showed the highest variability. The assessment of comparability showed a significant difference between countries’ extreme values, and in terms of comprehensibility a formalistic approach was evident, with technical dimensions outweighing user-oriented aspects. The overall quality index varied significantly across countries, with a notable average deterioration in 2023, indicating structural vulnerabilities in financial reporting systems. These findings support initial hypotheses on the lack of homogeneity in the quality of financial reporting in the selected region, despite the implementation of international standards. Full article

The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

A combination of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-based computations and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations is presented to study the dispersion and clustering of inertial particles in a forced homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow and to analyze the relative importance of the various forces acting on particles. The particle dynamics are investigated across a wide range of particle-to-fluid density ratios (from 0.01 to 1000) and Stokes numbers (from 1.4 × 10−6 to 55.4), at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 33.6. Particle clustering is quantified using Voronoï tessellations. Results confirm that clustering intensity is maximized at Stokes numbers around unity, where particles preferentially accumulate in low-vorticity regions. Particle dynamics within the turbulent flow considered here vary fundamentally with density and size, even among tracer-like particles. Low-density and neutrally buoyant particles mimic tracers via either velocity matching or acceleration balance, while dense particles follow inertia-dominated dynamics. Full article

Beech forests in the Italian peninsula are actively managed and they also support a high level of biodiversity. Hence, biodiversity conservation can be synergistic with timber production and carbon sequestration, enhancing the overall economic benefits of forest management. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of forest management regimes on bird communities in the Italian Peninsula during 2022 through audio recordings. We studied the structure, composition, and specialization of the breeding bird community in four managed beech stands (three even-aged beech stands aged 20, 60, and 100 years old, managed by a uniform shelterwood system; one uneven-aged stand, managed by a single-tree selection system) and one uneven-aged, unmanaged beech stand in the northern Apennines (Tuscany region, Italy). Between April and June 2022, data were collected through four 1-hour audio recording sessions per site, analyzing 5 min sequences. The unmanaged stand hosted a richer (a higher number of species, p < 0.001) and more specialized (a higher number of cavity-nesting species, p < 0.001; higher Woodland Bird Community Index (WBCI) values, p < 0.001; and eight characteristic species, including at least four highly specialized ones) bird community, compared to all the managed forests; moreover, the latter were homogeneous (similar to each other). Our study suggests that the unmanaged beech forests should be a priority option for conservation, while in terms of the managed beech forests, greater attention should be paid to defining the thresholds for snags, deadwood, and large trees to be retained to enhance their biodiversity value. Studies in additional sites, conducted over more years and including multi-taxon communities, are recommended for a deeper understanding and generalizable results. Full article

This study investigates the behavior of phosphate ion transport through two structurally distinct anion-exchange membranes—AMV (homogeneous) and HC-A (heterogeneous)—in an electrodialysis system under both static and stirred conditions at varying pH levels. Chronopotentiometric and current–voltage analyses were used to investigate the influence of pH and hydrodynamics on ion transport. Under underlimiting (ohmic) conditions, the AMV membrane exhibited simultaneous transport of H2PO4 and HPO42− ions at neutral and mildly alkaline pH, while such behavior was not verified at acidic pH and in all cases for the HC-A membrane. Under overlimiting current conditions, AMV favored electroconvection at low pH and exhibited significant water dissociation at high pH, leading to local pH shifts and chemical equilibrium displacement at the membrane–solution interface. In contrast, the HC-A membrane operated predominantly under strong electroconvective regimes, regardless of the pH value, without evidence of water dissociation or equilibrium change phenomena. Stirring significantly impacted the electrochemical responses: it altered the chronopotentiogram profiles through the emergence of intense oscillations in membrane potential drop at overlimiting currents and modified the current–voltage behavior by increasing the limiting current density, reducing electrical resistance, and compressing the plateau region that separates ohmic and overlimiting regimes. Additionally, both membranes showed signs of NH3 formation at the anodic-side interface under pH 7–8, associated with increased electrical resistance. These findings reveal distinct ionic transport characteristics and hydrodynamic sensitivities of the membranes, thus providing valuable insights for optimizing phosphate recovery via electrodialysis. The landscapes of China’s multi-ethnic areas are rich in natural and cultural value, but they are threatened by homogenization and urbanization. This study aims to establish a method for identifying and classifying the landscape characters in China’s multi-ethnic areas to support the protection and sustainable development of the landscape in these areas. Taking the Miao Frontier Corridor as an example, the study optimized a parameterization method of landscape character assessment (LCA), integrated relevant cultural and natural elements, and used the K-means clustering algorithm to determine the landscape character types and regions of the Miao Frontier Corridor. The results show that (1) the natural conditions, ethnic exchanges, and historical institutions of the Miao Frontier Corridor have had a significant impact on its overall landscape; and (2) using ethnic group culture as a cultural element in LCA helps to reveal the unique cultural value of areas with different landscape characters. This study expands the LCA framework and applies it to multi-ethnic areas in China, thereby establishing a database that can serve as the basis for cross-regional landscape protection, management, and development planning in these areas. The research methods can be widely used in other multi-ethnic areas in China. Full article

Mineralogical and Chemical Properties and REE Content of Bauxites in the Seydişehir (Konya, Türkiye) Region

The most important bauxite deposits in Türkiye are located in the Seydişehir (Konya) and Akseki (Antalya) regions, situated along the western Taurus Mountain, with a total reserve of approximately 44 million tons. Some of the bauxite deposits have been exploited for alumina since the 1970s. In this study, bauxite samples, collected from six different deposits were examined to determine their mineralogical and chemical composition, as well as their REE content, with the aim of identifying which bauxite types are enriched in REEs and assessing their economic potential. The samples included massive, oolitic, and brecciated bauxite types, which were analyzed using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductive coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM-EDX), and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). Massive bauxites were found to be more homogeneous in both mineralogical and chemical composition, predominantly composed of diaspore, boehmite, and rare gibbsite. Hematite is the most abundant iron oxide mineral in all bauxites, while goethite, rutile, and anatase occur in smaller quantities. Quartz, feldspar, kaolinite, dolomite, and pyrite were specifically determined in brecciated bauxites. Average oxide contents were determined as 52.94% Al2O3, 18.21% Fe2O3, 7.04% TiO2, and 2.69% SiO2. Na2O, K2O, and MgO values are typically below 0.5%, while CaO averages 3.54%. The total REE content of the bauxites ranged from 161 to 4072 ppm, with an average of 723 ppm. Oolitic-massive bauxites exhibit the highest REE enrichment. Cerium (Ce) was the most abundant REE, ranging from 87 to 453 ppm (avg. 218 ppm), followed by lanthanum (La), which reached up to 2561 ppm in some of the massive bauxite samples. LREEs such as La, Ce, Pr, and Nd were notably enriched compared to HREEs. The lack of a positive correlation between REEs and major element oxides, as well as with their occurrences in distinct association with Al- and Fe-oxides-hydroxides based on FESEM-EDS and EPMA analyses, suggests that the REEs are present as discrete mineral phases. Furthermore, these findings indicate that the REEs are not incorporated into the crystal structures of other minerals through isomorphic substitution or adsorption. Full article

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, a semi-perennial herb from the Asteraceae family, is native to the Paraguay–Brazil border region. The growing industrial interest in this species is due to its natural sweetening properties, such as steviol and its derivatives, which offer sweetness without adding calories. Morphological traits are crucial for assessing genetic variability and ensuring distinctness, homogeneity, and stability (DHS) for cultivar protection. This study characterized 19 elite Stevia genotypes from Embrapa Cerrados’ Active Germplasm Bank (BAG) using 21 morphological descriptors from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA). Genetic distances were calculated using the simple coincidence index complement method, and clustering was performed via the Unweighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA). The results showed that 17 of the 21 descriptors (>80%) effectively differentiated the genotypes, revealing significant genetic variability. Dendrogram analysis identified at least four major similarity groups, highlighting the potential of these genotypes for Stevia breeding programs. These findings underscore the suitability of these elite genotypes for developing superior varieties adapted to Cerrado conditions, supporting future cultivation and genetic improvement efforts. In the search for alternative protein sources, single cell proteins have gained increasing attention in recent years. Among them, proteins derived from yeast represent a promising but still underexplored option. To enable their application in food product design, their techno-functional properties must be understood. In order to investigate the impact of precipitation pH on their emulsion-stabilizing properties, yeast proteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae were isolated via precipitation at different pH (pH 3.5 to 5) after cell disruption in the high-pressure homogenizer. Emulsions containing 5 wt% oil and ~1 wt% protein were analyzed for stability based on their droplet size distribution. Proteins precipitated at pH 3.5 stabilized the smallest oil droplets and prevented partitioning of the emulsion, outperforming proteins precipitated at higher pH values. It is hypothesized that precipitation under acidic conditions induces protein denaturation and thereby exposes hydrophobic regions that enhance adsorption at the oil–water interface and the stabilization of the dispersed oil phase. To investigate the stabilization mechanism, the molecular weight of the proteins was determined using SDS-PAGE, their solubility using Bradford assay, and their aggregation behavior using static laser scattering. Proteins precipitated at pH 3.5 possessed larger molecular weights, lower solubility, and a strong tendency to aggregate. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of yeast-derived proteins as bio-surfactants and suggest that pH-controlled precipitation can tailor their functionality in food formulations. Genetic Impacts of Sustained Stock Enhancement on Wild Populations: A Case Study of Penaeus penicillatus in the Beibu Gulf, China

In recent decades, fishery stock enhancement has been increasingly utilized as a restoration tool to mitigate population declines and enhance the resilience of marine fisheries. Nevertheless, persistent enhancement efforts risk eroding the evolutionary potential of wild populations via genetic homogenization and maladaptive gene flow. Using long-term monitoring data (2017–2023), we quantified the effects of large-scale Penaeus penicillatus stock enhancement (~108 juveniles/yr) on wild population dynamics and genetic integrity in the Beibu Gulf ecosystem. Temporal genetic changes were assessed using eight highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, comparing founder (2017) and enhanced (2024) populations to quantify stocking impacts. Insignificantly lower expected heterozygosity was observed in the stocked population (He = 0.60, 2024) relative to natural populations (He = 0.62–0.66; p > 0.1), indicating genetic dilution effects from enhancement activities. No significant erosion of genetic diversity was detected post-enhancement, suggesting current stocking practices maintain short-term population genetic integrity. Despite conserved heterozygosity, pairwise Fst analysis detected significant genetic shifts between temporal cohorts (pre-enhancement—2017 vs. post-enhancement—2024; Fst = 0.25, p < 0.05), demonstrating stocking-induced population restructuring. Genetic connectivity analysis revealed that while the enhanced Beihai population (A-BH) maintained predominant self-recruitment (>90%), it experienced substantial stocking-derived gene flow (17% SW → A-BH). The post-stocking period showed both reduced genetic exchange with adjacent populations and increased asymmetric dispersal from A-BH (e.g., 5% to YJ), indicating that hatchery releases simultaneously enhanced population isolation while altering regional genetic structure. Our findings revealed the paradoxical dual effects of stock enhancement and allelic diversity while disrupting natural genetic architecture. This underscores the need for evolutionary-impact assessments in marine resource management. Full article

Clarifying the coordination and impediments of social, economic, and spatial connection in rural areas is essential for advancing rural revitalization, urban-rural integration, and regional coordinated development. Utilizing the 24 counties and districts in western Hunan as case studies, we developed an evaluation index system for sustainable rural development across three dimensions: social, economic, and spatial. We employed the coupling model, coordination model, and obstacle factor model to investigate the comprehensive development level, coupling and coordination status, and obstacle factors of the villages in the study area at three temporal points: 2002, 2012, and 2022. The findings indicate the following: (1) The degree of rural development in western Hunan has escalated swiftly throughout the study period, transitioning from relative homogeneity to a heterogeneous developmental landscape, accompanied by issues such as inadequate development and regional polarization. (2) The overall rural social, economic, and spatial indices are low, and the degree of coupling has increased variably across different study periods; the average coordination degree has gradually improved over time, yet the level of coordination remains low, and spatial development is unbalanced. (3) The criterion-level impediments hindering the sustainable development of rural society, economy, and space are, in descending order, social factors, spatial factors, and economic factors. The urbanization rate, total fixed investment rate, and arable land change rate are the primary impediments in most counties and cities. The study’s findings will inform the planning of rural development in ethnic regions, promote sustainable social and spatial advancement in the countryside, and serve as a reference for rural revitalization efforts. The effect of replacing wheat with corn on the color distribution across various locations in the carcasses of broilers was assessed. One thousand two hundred ROSS 308 one-day-old male chicks were reared in an experimental farm, with ten pens per treatment, based on the primary cereal ingredient during both the starter (1–14 d) and grower (15–41 d) phases: corn and wheat. At 41 days old, slaughtering was performed. At 24 h post slaughter, color measurements were taken in 15 carcasses per treatment using a MINOLTA CM600d reflectance spectrocolorimeter in the CIEL*a*b* space. Twelve locations were measured: drumette, apterial latero-pectoral area, neck, the back at the seventh thoracic vertebra, saddle, thigh, ham, hock and around the vent, shanks, and the surface and interior of the breast. The results indicate that the color distribution in the broiler carcass is not homogeneous. Very small color differences can be found between the surface and the interior of the breast, but they differ greatly from areas where there is skin. Corn produces a darker color than wheat, though the intact skin homogenizes lightness* across the entire carcass, reducing differences between regions. Corn increased mainly yellowness, influencing color saturation. The pronounced color differences between the shank and other locations almost disappear when corn is excluded from the feed. Hue° could serve as a potential indicator of color variations in the breast resulting from differences in dietary ingredients. Full article
