In order to solve the problem of inconsistent data distribution in machine learning, domain adaptation based on feature representation methods extracts features from the source domain, and transfers them to the target domain for classification. The existing feature representation-based methods mainly solve the problem of inconsistent feature distribution between the source domain data and the target domain data, but only a few methods analyze the correlation of cross-domain features between the original space and shared latent space, which reduces the performance of domain adaptation. To this end, we propose a domain adaptation method with a residual module, the main ideas of which are as follows: (1) transfer the source domain data features to the target domain data through the shared latent space to achieve features sharing; (2) build a cross-domain residual learning model using the latent feature space as the residual connection of the original feature space, which improves the propagation efficiency of features; (3) use a regular feature space to sparse feature representation, which can improve the robustness of the model; and (4) give an optimization algorithm, and the experiments on the public visual datasets (Office31, Office-Caltech, Office-Home, PIE, MNIST-UPS, COIL20) results show that our method achieved 92.7% accuracy on Office-Caltech and 83.2% on PIE and achieved the highest recognition accuracy in three datasets, which verify the effectiveness of the method. One of the key features of mobile networks in this age of mobile communication is seamless communication. Handover (HO) is a critical component of next-generation (NG) cellular communication networks, which requires careful management since it poses several risks to quality-of-service (QoS), including a decrease in average throughput and service disruptions. Due to the dramatic rise in base stations (BSs) and connections per unit area brought about by new fifth-generation (5G) network enablers, such as Internet of things (IoT), network densification, and mm-wave communications, HO management has become more challenging. The degree of difficulty is increased in light of the strict criteria that were recently published in the specifications of 5G networks. In order to address these issues more successfully and efficiently, this study has explored and examined intelligent HO optimization strategies using machine learning models. Furthermore, the significant goal of this review is to present the state of cellular networks as they are now, as well as to talk about mobility and home office administration in 5G alongside the overall features of 5G networks. This work presents an overview of machine learning methods in handover optimization and of the various data availability for evaluations. In the final section, the challenges and future research directions are also detailed. Full article

People use natural language to express their thoughts and wishes. As robots reside in various human environments, such as homes, offices, and hospitals, the need for human–robot communication is increasing. One of the best ways to achieve this communication is the use of natural languages. Natural language processing (NLP) is the most important approach enabling robots to understand natural languages and improve human–robot interaction. Also, due to this need, the amount of research on NLP has increased considerably in recent years. In this study, commands were given to a multiple-mobile-robot system using the Turkish natural language, and the robots were required to fulfill these orders. Turkish is classified as an agglutinative language. In agglutinative languages, words combine different morphemes, each carrying a specific meaning, to create complex words. Turkish exhibits this characteristic by adding various suffixes to a root or base form to convey grammatical relationships, tense, aspect, mood, and other semantic nuances. Since the Turkish language has an agglutinative structure, it is very difficult to decode its sentence structure in a way that robots can understand. Parsing of a given command, path planning, path tracking, and formation control were carried out. In the path-planning phase, the A* algorithm was used to find the optimal path, and a PID controller was used to follow the generated path with minimum error. A leader–follower approach was used to control multiple robots. A platoon formation was chosen as the multi-robot formation. The proposed method was validated on a known map containing obstacles, demonstrating the system’s ability to navigate the robots to the desired locations while maintaining the specified formation. This study used Turtlebot3 robots within the Gazebo simulation environment, providing a controlled and replicable setting for comprehensive experimentation. The results affirm the feasibility and effectiveness of employing NLP techniques for the formation control of multiple mobile robots, offering a robust and effective method for further research and development on human–robot interaction. Even before the outbreak of the pandemic, new working environments were considered an important trend in the office landscape, accompanied by modern office coffee solutions and catering concepts. Changes within the office environment have now accelerated further, influenced by factors such as progressive digitization, contactless work processes, home offices, open or co-working spaces and changing employee expectations. In the context of getting people back to work from home offices, the availability of coffee and food solutions has a central meaning (gained prominence of 33% (YouGov/Sodexo Study 2023) as a competitive advantage). The communal act of coffee breaks or gathering around coffee machines encourages informal networking, idea sharing and team building, thus fortifying the social fabric of the workplace. Research indicates that coffee consumption can enhance cognitive functions such as alertness, attention and memory, thereby positively impacting productivity and problem-solving capabilities for effective teamwork and interpersonal interactions. Furthermore, the provision of high-quality coffee options by employers not only reflects a commitment to employee well-being, but also serves as a tangible expression of the corporate culture and values. Requirements for modern vending concepts are evolving. It is not only the classic office environment that is subject to major changes; innovative solutions must also be found in the canteen/catering and hotel sectors in order to adapt to the new conditions. What this means for office coffee service and vending services in offices and businesses will be illustrated in this presentation under the motto “This is where New Work meets New Retail”. To this end, new to-go concepts from the out-of-home market will be presented, as well as innovations and modern solutions from the classic vending industry. Full article

Power Line Communication (PLC) serves as a medium for communication over power lines, utilizing the existing power grid for information transmission. It offers a low-cost, highly scalable signal transmission method and has the potential to become the preferred technology for providing broadband in smart homes, offices, and smart grids. However, noise in the power line channel, especially impulse noise, seriously affects the communication quality of PLC. In this paper, we establish an OFDM-PLC system with higher-order modulation and polar codes. The higher-order QAM or APSK modulation technique is employed to increase the signal transmission rate and the system performance is analyzed. To combat the impulse noise in the PLC channel, we first model it using a superposition of multi-damping sinusoidal functions and then introduce the polar coding scheme to suppress the impulse noise in the system, thereby improving the transmission reliability. Simulation results verify that the proposed polar coding scheme based on the OFDM-PLC system can improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of PLC channel transmission under impulse interference. Stressors are especially widespread in urban agglomerations. Common themes of built environment interventions that support health and well-being are blue and green infrastructure, indoor and outdoor air quality, thermal comfort, access to natural lighting, and acoustics. Given the current megatrends of increasing summer temperatures and the high popularity of home offices, we aimed at modeling thermal comfort changes of people working at home in three Austrian cities (Vienna, Innsbruck, and Graz) during the next decades until 2090. We present findings based on (I) an inter-disciplinary literature search and (II) indoor and outdoor climate simulations for actual and future climate scenarios. Based on the results, we discuss the potential impacts for work and human health and well-being, and we suggest a framework for the home office in “post-COVID-19 Austria” that integrates social, ecological, and economic aspects. The results of our study indicate that, in future climate scenarios, overheating of the interior can no longer be prevented without active cooling measures and nature-based solutions. Recommendations on the adjustment of behavior under climate change, including greening, adequate ventilation, and cooling techniques, are thus urgently needed for employees who are working from home in order to maintain physical and mental health and wellbeing. Objectives: Dental treatment in special needs patients, including children with autism, can be accomplished by reducing the behaviors that can reduce fear, as it has been demonstrated in other studies. The present study aims to examine the influence of the latency time elapsing between desensitization and the real dental situation on facilitating the access of children with autism to dental treatment. Study design: Nineteen patients with autism, who were aged 3–14 years and attended the Special Education Center in Madrid but were living with their parents at home, were selected for the study. All children in the sample were subjected to a desensitization process before attending the real dental office. Two study groups were established: the latency period between the last desensitization and the real situation was one day for the first group and seven days for the second group. An experimental study was conducted to assess the child’s cooperation in the dental chair; the dental examination was divided into several steps and the highest step reached by each child was recorded. Results: There is a statistical difference in the number of steps reached between the children who received the information just before the examination date and the children who experienced a longer latency period between receiving the information and experiencing the examination. Conclusions: We would like to emphasize the importance of providing information in advance when dealing with autistic children; this information should be as close as possible to the real situation. Additionally, we would like to stress the importance of inter-cooperation between parents, educators, and pediatric dentists in order to guarantee adequate oro-dental care for autistic children. Further studies with larger sample sizes and a control group are recommended. Full article

In the post pandemic era, the telecommuting of business employees has widely become acceptable in organizations, which demands extensive dependence on digital technologies. In addition, this poses additional security threats for business employees as well as organizations. In order to better respond to security threats, business employees must have a higher level of awareness of the potential threats that are relevant to digital infrastructure used within the workplace. In this paper, we present a quantitative study conducted in line with the theory of planned behavior to gain insight into employee behavior toward information security within different business sectors in Saudi Arabia. The key factors chosen for our model were password management, infrastructure security management, email management, organizational security policy, organizational support and training, and the perception of the level of security. We have applied structured equation modelling to identify most of the relevant factors based on the respondents’ feedback. The results based on the business employee behavior showed that they respondents did not perceive all of the constructs of our model as relevant security factors, which can potentially result in security lapses. This indicates that more security-related measures should be put in place and that business employees should be updated periodically about potential security threats. To this effect, we divided the studied security measures into those which should be implemented at organizational and individual levels. The results will potentially help business managers to design appropriate security trainings, guidelines, and policies for their employees to ensure more information security awareness and protect their technological infrastructure, especially within home office environments. Visible light communications (VLC) is a technology that enables the transmission of digital information with a light source. VLC is nowadays seen as a promising technology for indoor applications, helping WiFi to handle the spectrum crunch. Possible indoor applications range from Internet connection at home/office to multimedia content delivery in a museum. Despite the vast interest of researchers in both theoretical analysis and experimentation on VLC technology, no studies have been carried out on the human perceptions of objects illuminated by VLC-based lamps. It is important to define if a VLC lamp decreases the reading capability or modifies the color perception in order to make VLC a technology appropriate for everyday life use. This paper describes the results of psychophysical tests on humans to define if VLC lamps modify the perception of colors or the reading speed. The results of the reading speed test showed a 0.97 correlation coefficient between tests with and without VLC modulated light, leading us to conclude that there is no difference in the reading speed capability with and without VLC-modulated light. The results of the color perception test showed a Fisher exact test p-value of 0.2351, showing that the perception of color is not influenced by the presence of the VLC modulated light. Full article

As robots become more versatile and combined with a variety of Internet-of-Things technologies, they will be able to serve humans in their daily environments. To provide services by satisfying various human requests, several robots must take turns performing a series of tasks that constitute the service. Because the order of service delivery may differ according to user requests, sequential interdependencies between tasks should be considered. Therefore, we propose a dynamic service scheduler consisting of dynamic sequencing and allocation that can handle scheduling of tasks with user requests such as prioritizing certain tasks or actively changing their order in a multi-agent environment. We experimented with the proposed method in four situation scenarios by building a virtual reality smart office consisting of multiple robots with a robot arm, mobile robot, and smart lamp. The results demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach by satisfying the user requirements in different situations. The proposed approach constitutes a basis for further development of efficient in-office and at-home multi-agent environments. Full article

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a pandemic globally since its outbreak in 2019. As an important port city with prosperous foreign trade, Shanghai has been under severe pressure to prevent the input of COVID-19. With this in mind, solid policies and measures have always been taken in Shanghai to control the input of COVID-19 strictly. In March 2022, the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant swept Shanghai, and then the home office order was rapidly carried out in most of the districts. This article focuses on quantifying the changes in concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 in Shanghai after implementing the home office order and exploring the spatial-distribution characteristics and time trend of the impact of the home office order on airborne particulate matters (PMs) through an interrupted-time-series (ITS) analysis. This study found that PM10 and PM2.5 decreased by 31.40 μg/m3 (p = 0.028) and 10.33 μg/m3 (p = 0.276), respectively, with the fastest decrease speed in the first 10 days of the home office order. Meanwhile, the changes in PM concentrations in eastern areas such as Fengxian District and Chongming District are less than those in central and western areas of Shanghai. Therefore, it can be concluded that implementing the home office order for 10 days could effectively cut down PM concentrations, and the reduction values can be affected by spatial difference and time factor. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we define “home”, which is recast as the new coffee shop, restaurant, entertainment center, and office during the pandemic. The shift toward working from home led to substantial changes in how consumers behave, affecting the consumption of resources in some cases for years to come. Using data from six water utilities in various states in the U.S., we investigated how water consumption has changed attributable to the implementation of stay-at-home (SAH) orders. The results indicated an overall increase of between 3.08% and 13.65% in daily water consumption during the SAH orders compared to the same period in 2018 and 2019, with the gaps closing as lockdown restrictions eased. The findings also revealed that the changes in water consumption across sectors and user groups were heterogeneous. Specifically, the results showed that total daily residential water demand during SAH orders in 2020 increased significantly, between 11.80% and 13.65%, relative to the same period in 2018 and 2019, but the changes in water consumption for non-residential properties headed in opposite directions with reductions between −22.53% and −45.08%. In addition, we found that the low-income groups did not change their water consumption even with the lockdown. Full article

The paper presents an analysis of the work comfort in a home office located in a single-family building with supply and exhaust ventilation with heat recovery. The noise level was measured, and the subjective feelings of the working person were analysed. The analysis covered five fan efficiency settings: fan off, low, normal, high and maximum. The highest sound level (31–32 dB(A)) was observed for the maximum and high power of the fan. Normal and low fan levels resulted in a similar noise level of 20–21 dB(A). The sound level influenced the feeling of work comfort of the person. At the highest and maximum level of fan operation, the person complained about noise and draft. The low level did not adversely affect the comfort of work. The normal level, most often set by household members, resulted in the absence of draught or the sensation of a slight draught, and the ventilation operation was described as not onerous or slightly onerous. Workplace comfort depends on the operating conditions of the ventilation system (noise level, air velocity and temperature) and on the subjective feelings of the person working. In order to improve comfort, it is recommended that one locate the workplace away from the ventilation elements. Full article

Employee satisfaction and productivity are highly dependent on the alignment between the design of a workplace, the culture, the work activities, and the technology used, and while the understanding of such interactions has received increased interest in fields including architecture, health, and psychology, very little is known in relation to virtual work and reality (VR). VR workplaces have the potential to become an integral part of new work arrangements, enabling employees to execute teamwork and task work through (mature) simulated environments designed to meet individual, team, and organizational productivity needs. Thus, the aim of this study was three-fold: In study 1, we gained, through expert interviews, insights into contemporary thinking in workplace design, and gathered a greater understanding of the dimensions of design, behaviors, environments, and tools that affect collaborative work and productivity. In study 2, we observed knowledge workers in home environments and open, closed, and balanced office layouts, in order to understand the potential for successful integration in VR. In study 3, we evaluated environmental needs and opportunities through VR. Based on our findings, we developed an Ecology of Work model, combining work systems and pillars of performance success. Home Production: Does It Matter for the Korean Macroeconomy during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous influence on many aspects of life in Korea. Some people have had to relocate their workplaces from factories or offices to their homes in order to stop the spread of the virus. This paper examines the effects of home production on the Korean macroeconomy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, the impulse response function is used to perform an empirical analysis. The results show that total output, market goods consumption, investment, capital, and market work hours all decline as a consequence of a home productivity shock, while home goods consumption, wages, transfer payments, and home work hours all increase. Moreover, using fiscal policies such as lowering the capital tax rate and increasing the fiscal deficit, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Korean macroeconomy can be improved. Robustness tests are carried out in light of the uneven economic development and different COVID-19 pandemic scenarios inside and outside the Seoul circle. The conclusions of this paper are accurate and reliable, as shown by the results of the robustness test. Full article
