The Draw-A-Person Intellectual Ability test for children, adolescents, and adults is a widely used tool in psychology for assessing intellectual ability. This test relies on human drawings for initial raw scoring, with the subsequent conversion of data into IQ ranges through manual procedures. However, this manual scoring and IQ assessment process can be time-consuming, particularly for busy psychologists dealing with a high caseload of children and adolescents. Presently, DAP-IQ screening continues to be a manual endeavor conducted by psychologists. The primary objective of our research is to streamline the IQ screening process for psychologists by leveraging deep learning algorithms. In this study, we utilized the DAP-IQ manual to derive IQ measurements and categorized the entire dataset into seven distinct classes: Very Superior, Superior, High Average, Average, Below Average, Significantly Impaired, and Mildly Impaired. The dataset for IQ screening was sourced from primary to high school students aged from 8 to 17, comprising over 1100 sketches, which were subsequently manually classified under the DAP-IQ manual. Subsequently, the manual classified dataset was converted into digital images. To develop the artificial intelligence-based models, various deep learning algorithms were employed, including Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and state-of-the-art CNN (Transfer Learning) models such as Mobile-Net, Xception, InceptionResNetV2, and InceptionV3. The Mobile-Net model demonstrated remarkable performance, achieving a classification accuracy of 98.68%, surpassing the capabilities of existing methodologies. This research represents a significant step towards expediting and enhancing the IQ screening for psychologists working with diverse age groups. Full article

Students with high intellectual abilities in higher education face a significant risk of underachievement due to a range of influencing factors. This systematic review explored their social–emotional and educational needs and examined interventions aimed at addressing both these needs and underachievement. A systematic literature search of a total of 118 records identified 20 social–emotional and 26 educational needs, organized into six overarching categories, illustrating the complex challenges these students face. Of the 42 records investigating an intervention, 38 focused on students directly, three on student advisors and one on teachers. While most interventions addressed multiple student needs, none fully integrated social–emotional and educational aspects. Ultimately, 17 studies examined underachievement, but only 5 implemented an intervention to reduce it. These findings underscore the need for integrated approaches to effectively support higher education students with high abilities. Full article

In this cohort study, we evaluated the cognitive and learning difficulties of school-age children perinatally infected with Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) on Reunion Island using the Evaluation of Cognitive Functions and Learning in Children (EDA) battery screening test compared to the healthy children cohort used for EDA development. Of the 19 infected children, 11 (57.9%) exhibited subnormal or abnormal scores, of whom 3 were classified as high risk, and 8 were classified as at risk for cognitive and learning difficulties. Children who had encephalopathy were at higher risk for displaying at least one difficulty than non-encephalopathic children (relative risk 2.13; 95% CI 1.05–4.33). The difficulties observed affected verbal functions, non-verbal functions, and learning abilities, such as phonology, lexical evocation and comprehension, graphism, selective visual attention, planning, visual–spatial reasoning, dictation and mathematics, as well as core executive functions, such as inhibitory control, shifting, and working memory. Neurocognitive dysfunctions could be linked to severe brain damage, as evidenced by severe white matter reduction mainly in the frontal lobes and corpus callosum and potentially in all functional networks involved in difficulties. These results should motivate further investigation of intellectual and adaptive functioning to diagnose intellectual deficiency and severe maladaptive behaviour in children perinatally infected with Chikungunya virus. Background/Objectives: Disability is a term that involves mental, intellectual, or sensory impairment resulting in the loss of one’s ability to walk or perform the activities necessary to live in a society. This study aims to collect all the data regarding the absorption, distribution, and disposition of drugs in disabled Saudi patients, i.e., patients suffering from epilepsy, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, etc., and then compare these results with data reported in other ethnicities. Methods: An exhaustive online search used the key terms in Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct to extract all articles that met the eligibility criteria. All research studies containing pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters (area under the curve from 0 to infinity (AUC0–∞), maximal plasma concentration (Cmax), clearance (CL), volume of distribution, time to reach maximum plasma concentration, and half-life) were included in this review. Results: In pediatric epileptic patients, carbamazepine showed a notable decrease in Cmax with increasing age, which may be due to ontogenetic changes in its disposition. The AUC0–∞ of busulphan in adult hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients was recorded as 4392.5 ± 1354.65 μg·h/mL, with high inter-individual variability. Moreover, the CL of vancomycin was reported to be 25% higher among cancer patients in comparison to non-cancer subjects. Conclusions: The complications in disabled patients due to alterations in cytochrome P450 enzymes, pathophysiology, genetics, and ethnicity emphasize the significance of patient-centered drug dosing. These findings may aid healthcare physicians in refining therapeutic care in this population. Full article

High school students face critical psychological challenges during adolescence, including academic pressures and educational decision-making. Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration provides a framework for understanding growth through disintegration and reintegration, with perfectionistic traits acting as intrinsic motivators for self-improvement. This study examined the psychological profiles of 641 Taiwanese high school students: 207 mathematically and scientifically talented students (MSTS), 187 verbally talented students (VTS), and 247 regular students (RS). Using the ME III, refined from the ME II, and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, our research assessed overexcitabilities (OEs) and perfectionism traits. MSTS and VTS scored significantly higher in Intellectual and Imaginational OEs than RS, with VTS also overperforming in sensual OE. MSTS and VTS showed higher personal standards, while VTS excelled in organization, and RS reported higher parental criticism. Emotional OE correlated with perfectionism, such as concern over mistakes, doubts about actions, and parental criticism, while Intellectual OE positively correlated with personal standards and negatively with parental criticism. Intellectual and Emotional OEs jointly predicted personal standards and organization; while Sensual, Intellectual, and Emotional OEs predicted doubts about actions, etc. These findings underscore the importance of tailored educational and counseling strategies to address the unique needs of gifted students, fostering environments that enhance their abilities and overall well-being. Figurative language is a complex construct related to intelligence. Psychology and psycholinguistics are trying to understand it from an interdisciplinary perspective, but studies are still scarce, methodologies are heterogeneous, and results are difficult to integrate. Some studies suggest that understanding the cognitive processes underlying figurative language and its forms could provide a new approach to understanding intellectual differences, such as high intellectual ability (HIA), and new instruments to assess it. The language of HIA children develops earlier and includes the use of irony, which involves metalinguistic skills. In this context, the present study aims to offer an instrument, called the verbal irony questionnaire (or VIrQ), to test the comprehension of verbal irony in students with HIA. A convenience sample of n = 169 students with HIA, aged between 7 and 15 years, responded to the VIrQ. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The results revealed that 33 items were retained and categorized into four factors. F1, ironic dissociation (14 items); F2, ironic attitude (8 items); F3, ironic constructions (7 items); and F4, reinforced irony echo (4 items). All factors have adequate reliability indices above 0.70 and below 0.95. Finally, new perspectives are also discussed. Full article

Leisure education has the potential to improve the quality of life and prepare students for social participation after graduation. This study elucidates the perspectives of special education teachers on leisure instruction. The study surveyed 129 teachers from 10 special needs schools for students with intellectual disabilities in Prefecture A, a rural area of Japan. An online survey was conducted from 21 October to 17 November 2023. The survey items were based on 13 aspects of leisure instruction identified from a literature review related to leisure instruction in Japan and a qualitative analysis of interviews with high school teachers in special needs schools for students with intellectual disabilities. The results showed that “The ability to pass time during brief periods of free time”, “Various activity experiences that lead to leisure”, and “Knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses in activities” were significantly more important during school. Conversely, “understanding the psychological importance of leisure”, “connecting with organizations that support leisure activities”, and “finding places to engage in leisure activities” were significantly more important after graduation. The results of this study can be used to identify the gaps in perception between special education teachers and vocational rehabilitation practitioners responsible for post-social participation support. Balance is a relevant indicator of physical fitness and correlates with intellectual abilities. Due to limited resources, however, balance tests are underrepresented in fitness checks. To develop an effective field test to assess static balance with minimal cost, little spatial requirement and short testing time, a cross-sectional pilot study was conducted in three different school types (primary school, secondary school, and high school) and the reliability, objectivity and validity of the novel Austrian Balance Check (ABC) were assessed, with the generation of age- and gender-specific reference values. Tests were carried out with participants from regular school classes (RSC) and elite sports school classes (ESC). A total of 1005 participants were included (age range: 6.2 to 19.8 years). Participants in RSC (ICC2.1 = 0.92, 95% CI 0.90 to 0.93) showed excellent values, and those in ESC (ICC2.1 = 0.89, 95% CI 0.85 to 0.93) had good to excellent values in the reliability test. Objectivity was excellent in both groups (RSC (ICC2.1 = 0.99, 95% CI 0.98 to 0.99); ESC (ICC2.1 = 0.98, 95% CI 0.96 to 0.99)). A gold standard comparison using an electronic force plate showed a strong negative correlation: participants with high overall ABC scores showed less movement on the force plate (parameters of the center of pressure: surface area (ρ = −0.61), mean velocity (ρ = −0.65) and path length (ρ = −0.65). The test duration of ABC was significantly (p < 0.001) shorter compared with an established balance test. ABC offers potential benefits by allowing field-based static balance testing in large groups with low cost, minimal time and spatial requirements as well as high reliability, objectivity and validity. Need for Cognition has been established as a key intellectual investment trait shaping students’ academic development. However, little is yet known about its malleability, particularly in youth. This study investigated stability and change in Need for Cognition in a large longitudinal sample of 3409 adolescents from 166 classes in 27 schools in Flanders. Participants reported on their Need for Cognition in Grades 7, 8, 11 and 12. First, the latent rank-order stability of Need for Cognition between Grades 7 and 11 was found to be r = 0.50. This stability was of a similar magnitude to that of the Big Five personality traits observed in the same sample and larger than that of academic intrinsic motivation. Second, trajectories of Need for Cognition over time were found to vary between individuals. In particular, three trajectory classes could be identified, differentiated mainly by the initial level of Need for Cognition (i.e., a low, medium, and high trajectory). Finally, cognitive ability, cognitive stimulation at home, and parental autonomy support, but not parental educational level, were associated with higher odds of belonging to the high Need for Cognition trajectory and lower odds of belonging to the low Need for Cognition trajectory. Hydrogels exhibit distinctive features. These properties make them suitable for applications across various fields, such as environment, energy, and medicine. In this paper, we conducted a comprehensive search on the CNKI and Web of Science databases spanning from 2000 to 2024. Using tools like CiteSpace and VosViewer, we visualized the evolution, composition, hot spots, and trends in hydrogels in the field of water treatment sustainability. The results show that from 2000 to 2024, there has been a gradual increase in the number of publications in this field. China leads in the total number of publications; although, it ranks fourth in average citation rate. Seven out of the top ten research institutions are based in China. Additionally, three journals, including the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Chemical Engineering Journal and Carbohydrate Polymers, stand out, with a relatively high number of publications. The identified research hotspots include a range of preparation methods, including the freezing method and cross-linking method. Additionally, other preparation methods and the examination of water retention rate and adsorption isotherm are part of the research focus. The primary emphasis is on studying the adsorption of heavy metals, microplastics, and organic pollutants in dye wastewater. The main adsorption mechanisms investigated are chelation, electrostatic attraction, and functional group interaction. These findings have potential applications in water purification, seawater desalination, and atmospheric condensation. For the authorized patents in hydrogel-related fields, with the continuous improvement in innovation ability and the continuous enhancement of intellectual property protection awareness, the number of authorized patents continues to rise. China has seven of the top ten institutions in the number of patents granted, and the total number of patents granted in China ranks first in the world. Future work should focus on methods for synthesizing new pollutants and other target pollutants and on improving adsorption efficiency. Additionally, the development of cost-effective hydrogel materials with improved treatment efficacy is essential to advance sustainable practices in water treatment. Full article

Iron is a key nutrient for cognitive function. During periods of high academic demand, brain and cognitive activity increase, potentially affecting iron intake and reserves. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of iron levels on cognitive function in a university sample, considering the influence of gender. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 132 university students (18–29 years) from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). A dietary record was formed through a questionnaire to analyze iron consumption, and blood and anthropometric parameters were measured. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV was used to determine the Intelligence Quotient (IQ), as well as the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI), Working Memory Index (WMI), Processing Speed Index (PSI), and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI), to assess cognitive abilities. Among women, the prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was 21% and 4.2%, respectively. No ID or IDA was found in men. The impact of iron intake on IQ and cognitive abilities was mainly associated with the female population, where a positive association between iron intake, serum ferritin, and total IQ was revealed. In conclusion, low iron intake is related to poorer intellectual ability, suggesting that an iron-rich diet is necessary to maintain the academic level of university students. Full article

Background: this study aims to investigate the accuracy and completeness of ChatGPT in answering questions and solving clinical scenarios of interceptive orthodontics. Materials and Methods: ten specialized orthodontists from ten Italian postgraduate orthodontics schools developed 21 clinical open-ended questions encompassing all of the subspecialities of interceptive orthodontics and 7 comprehensive clinical cases. Questions and scenarios were inputted into ChatGPT4, and the resulting answers were evaluated by the researchers using predefined accuracy (range 1–6) and completeness (range 1–3) Likert scales. Results: For the open-ended questions, the overall median score was 4.9/6 for the accuracy and 2.4/3 for completeness. In addition, the reviewers rated the accuracy of open-ended answers as entirely correct (score 6 on Likert scale) in 40.5% of cases and completeness as entirely correct (score 3 n Likert scale) in 50.5% of cases. As for the clinical cases, the overall median score was 4.9/6 for accuracy and 2.5/3 for completeness. Overall, the reviewers rated the accuracy of clinical case answers as entirely correct in 46% of cases and the completeness of clinical case answers as entirely correct in 54.3% of cases. Conclusions: The results showed a high level of accuracy and completeness in AI responses and a great ability to solve difficult clinical cases, but the answers were not 100% accurate and complete. ChatGPT is not yet sophisticated enough to replace the intellectual work of human beings. Full article

This case report was conducted by searching for the following keywords on PubMed: High Functioning Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, cariprazine, aripiprazole, partial agonist antipsychotic, DRD2/DRD3. High Functioning Autism (HFA) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with average intellectual abilities, behavioral symptoms such as irritability, hyperactivity, aggressiveness and mood symptoms. HFA is not a term used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders (DSM), but it is commonly used to identify patients diagnosed with Autistic Disorder (AD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) with average or above average intellectual abilities. Several factors are involved in HFA development, including environmental and genetic factors. In particular, over the last several decades, dopaminergic signaling system dysfunction has been highlighted as being responsible for behavioral patterns. Nowadays, symptoms of ASD lack a specific pharmacological treatment. The only medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for symptoms associated with ASD, in particular the irritability, are risperidone and aripiprazole. According to the hypothesis that dopamine receptor DRD2 and DRD3 might be involved in impulsive behavior, stereotypy, repetitive behaviors and language impairment, cariprazine could be a therapeutic option. This molecule is primarily characterized by DRD3 partial agonism and serotonin 5-HT1A partial agonism, with a lower ability to activate DRD2 than other third-generation antipsychotics, such as aripiprazole. Internalising and Externalising Symptoms and Their Association with the Family Environment in Young Children with Williams Syndrome: A Longitudinal Study

Williams Syndrome (WS) involves high rates of psychopathology across the lifespan. However, little is known about the early, longitudinal trajectory of internalising/externalising symptoms or the association between these and the family environment in WS. WS (n = 16; aged 2 years, 2 months to 9 years, 5 months) and typically developing or TD (n = 46; aged 2 years, 2 months to 11 years, 1 month) children were assessed on two occasions over 2.5 years utilising parent report questionnaires—the Child Behaviour Checklist and the Family Environment Scale. No statistically significant changes were found in CBCL/psychopathology profiles across timepoints, on average, for either WS or TD children. However, reliable change scores showed WS children had considerable variability in CBCL scores over time. Cross-sectionally, the WS group showed higher scores (reflecting more psychopathology) compared to TD controls at both time points across most CBCL subscales, with elevated overall psychopathology problems identified in 56–68% of WS children (versus 8% in TD controls). Psychopathology was not associated with sex, chronological age, or cognitive ability in WS. Conflict in the family environment was positively associated with higher Attention Problems at Time 1 in the WS group, whilst the TD group showed associations between family conflict and total psychopathology problems at both time points and between family cohesion and total psychopathology problems at Time 2. Family environment did not differ between groups, except for lower engagement in intellectual and cultural activities in WS. Findings highlight variable Internalising and Externalising Problems in young WS children over time, with greater biological than environmental contributions to psychopathology in WS. Full article

The average life expectancy of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) is increasing. However, living more years does not mean living better, leading to the need for research on comorbidities associated with the aging process. Associated with this process are the physical characteristics most prevalent in an individual with IDD: low levels of all physical capacities, the accumulation of central fat, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, variables considered to be some of the main risk factors of the onset of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, and variables that can negatively impact quality of life (QoL). Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate a sample of 21 institutionalized adults with IDD (42.81 ± 10.99 years old) in terms of their anthropometric characteristics, body composition, general health status, functional capacity, neuromuscular capacity, and dementia/cognitive function, and the possible associations with QoL. All assessments were performed in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education—University of Coimbra. Participants, in the present study, have low levels of physical fitness and high metabolic and cardiovascular markets, which need to be improved. On the other hand, functional and neuromuscular ability seems to be associated with QoL (p ≤ 0.05). This study highlights the role of primary and secondary care providers in diagnosis, prevention, and supporting individuals with IDDs to promote QoL. Full article
