LPG fuel supply systems are increasingly important for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the heat transfer phenomena to enhance the thermal performance of double-pipe heat exchangers (DPHEs) in LPG fuel supply systems. This study investigates the heat transfer performance of a glycol–steam double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHE) within an LPG fuel supply system under varying operating conditions. A computational model and methodology were developed and validated by comparing the numerical results with experimental data obtained from commissioning tests. Additionally, the effects of turbulence models and parametric variations were evaluated by analyzing the glycol–water mixing ratio and flow direction—both of which are critical operational parameters for DPHE systems. Numerical validation against the commissioning data showed a deviation of ±2% under parallel-flow conditions, confirming the reliability of the proposed model. With respect to the glycol–water mixing ratio and flow configuration, thermal conductance (UA) decreased by approximately 11% in parallel flow and 13% in counter flow for every 20% increase in glycol concentration. Furthermore, parallel flow exhibited approximately 0.6% higher outlet temperatures than counter flow, indicating superior heat transfer efficiency under parallel-flow conditions. Finally, the heat transfer behavior of the DPHE was further examined by considering the effects of geometric characteristics, pipe material, and fluid properties. This study offers significant contributions to the engineering design of double-pipe heat exchanger systems for LPG fuel supply applications. Full article

To fully accommodate renewable and derivative energy sources in mine energy systems under supply and demand uncertainties, this paper proposes an optimized electricity–heat scheduling method for mining areas that incorporates Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). First, to address uncertainties on both the supply and demand sides, a P2G unit is introduced, and a Latin hypercube sampling technique based on Cholesky decomposition is employed to generate wind–solar-load sample matrices that capture source–load correlations, which are subsequently used to construct representative scenarios. Second, a stochastic optimization scheduling model is developed for the mine electricity–heat energy system, aiming to minimize the total scheduling cost comprising day-ahead scheduling cost, expected reserve adjustment cost, and CVaR. Finally, a case study on a typical mine electricity–heat energy system is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of operational cost reduction and system reliability. The results demonstrate a 1.4% reduction in the total operating cost, achieving a balance between economic efficiency and system security. Full article

The global energy transition and increasingly rigorous legal regulations aimed at climate protection are driving the search for alternative energy sources, including renewable energy sources (RESs) and waste heat. However, the mismatch between supply and demand presents a significant challenge. Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies, particularly mobile thermal energy storage (M-TES), offer a potential solution to address this gap. M-TES can not only balance supply and demand but also facilitate the transportation of heat from the source to the recipient. This paper reviews the current state of M-TES technologies, focusing on their technology readiness level, key operating parameters, and advantages and disadvantages. It is found that M-TES can be based on sensible heat, latent heat, or thermochemical reactions, with the majority of research and projects centered around latent heat storage. Regarding the type of research, significant progress has been made at the laboratory and simulation levels, while real-world implementation remains limited, with few pilot projects and commercially available systems. Despite the limited number of real-world M-TES implementations, currently existing M-TES systems can store up to 5.4 MWh in temperatures ranging from 58 °C to as high as 1300 °C. These findings highlight the potential of the M-TES and offer data for technology selection, simultaneously indicating the research gaps and future research directions. Full article

This study proposes the SMR Smart Net-Zero City (SSNC) framework—a scalable model for achieving carbon neutrality by integrating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), renewable energy sources, and sector coupling within a microgrid architecture. As deploying renewables alone would require economically and technically impractical energy storage systems, SMRs provide a reliable and flexible baseload power source. Sector coupling systems—such as hydrogen production and heat generation—enhance grid stability by absorbing surplus energy and supporting the decarbonization of non-electric sectors. The core contribution of this study lies in its real-time data emulation framework, which overcomes a critical limitation in the current energy landscape: the absence of operational data for future technologies such as SMRs and their coupled hydrogen production systems. As these technologies are still in the pre-commercial stage, direct physical integration and validation are not yet feasible. To address this, the researchers leveraged real-time data from an existing commercial microgrid, specifically focusing on the import of grid electricity during energy shortfalls and export during solar surpluses. These patterns were repurposed to simulate the real-time operational behavior of future SMRs (ProxySMR) and sector coupling loads. This physically grounded simulation approach enables high-fidelity approximation of unavailable technologies and introduces a novel methodology to characterize their dynamic response within operational contexts. A key element of the SSNC control logic is a day–night strategy: maximum SMR output and minimal hydrogen production at night, and minimal SMR output with maximum hydrogen production during the day—balancing supply and demand while maintaining high SMR utilization for economic efficiency. The SSNC testbed was validated through a seven-day continuous operation in Busan, demonstrating stable performance and approximately 75% SMR utilization, thereby supporting the feasibility of this proxy-based method. Importantly, to the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first publicly reported attempt to emulate the real-time dynamics of a net-zero city concept based on not-yet-commercial SMRs and sector coupling systems using live operational data. This simulation-based framework offers a forward-looking, data-driven pathway to inform the development and control of next-generation carbon-neutral energy systems. Full article

This study proposes a new air treatment system that integrates dehumidification, cooling, and water recovery using a Horizontal Air–Ground Heat Exchanger (HAGHE) combined with Peltier cells. The airflow generated by a fan flows through an HAGHE until it meets a septum on which Peltier cells are placed, and then separates into two distinct streams that lap the two surfaces of the Peltier cells: one stream passes through the cold surfaces, undergoing both sensible and latent cooling with dehumidification; the other stream passes through the hot surfaces, increasing its temperature. The two treated air streams may then pass through a mixing chamber, where they are combined in the appropriate proportions to achieve the desired air supply conditions and ensure thermal comfort in the indoor environment. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to simulate the thermal interaction between the HAGHE and the surrounding soil. The simulation focused on a system installed under the subtropical climate conditions of Nairobi, Africa. The simulation results demonstrate that the HAGHE system is capable of reducing the air temperature by several degrees under typical summer conditions, with enhanced performance observed when the soil is moist. Condensation phenomena were triggered when the relative humidity of the inlet air exceeded 60%, contributing additional cooling through latent heat extraction. The proposed HAGHE–Peltier system can be easily powered by renewable energy sources and configured for stand-alone operation, making it particularly suitable for off-grid applications. Full article

This research considers a preliminary comparative technical evaluation of two micro-gas turbine (MGT) systems in combined heat and power (CHP) mode (100 kWe), aimed at supplying heat to a residential community of 15 average-sized buildings located in Central Europe over a year. Two systems were modelled in Ebsilon 15 software: a natural gas case (benchmark) and an ammonia-fueled case, both based on the same on-design parameters. Off-design simulations evaluated performance over variable ambient temperatures and loads. Idealized, unrecuperated cycles were adopted to isolate the thermodynamic impact of the fuel switch under complete combustion assumption. Under these assumptions, the study shows that the ammonia system produces more electrical energy and less excess heat, yielding marginally higher electrical efficiency and EUF (26.05% and 77.63%) than the natural gas system (24.59% and 77.55%), highlighting ammonia’s utilization potential in such a context. Future research should target validating ammonia combustion and emission profiles across the turbine load range, and updating the thermodynamic model with a recuperator and SCR accounting for realistic pressure losses. Transpiration cooling that utilizes the phase change of a liquid coolant is recognized as an effective thermal protection technique for extreme environments. However, the introduction of phase change within the porous structure brings about challenges, such as vapor blockage, pressure fluctuations, and temperature inversion, which critically influence system reliability. This study conducts numerical analyses of coupled processes of heat transfer, flow, and phase change in transpiration cooling using a Two-Phase Mixture Model. The simulation incorporates a Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium approach to capture the distinct temperature fields of the solid and fluid phases, enabling accurate prediction of the thermal response within two-phase and single-phase regions. The results reveal that under low heat flux, dominant capillary action suppresses dry-out and expands the two-phase region. Conversely, high heat flux causes vaporization to overwhelm the capillary supply, forming a superheated vapor layer and constricting the two-phase zone. The analysis also explains a paradoxical pressure drop, where an initial increase in flow rate reduces pressure loss by suppressing the high-viscosity vapor phase. Furthermore, a local temperature inversion, where the fluid becomes hotter than the solid matrix, is identified and attributed to vapor counterflow and its subsequent condensation. Full article

Comparative Analysis of Fully Floating and Semi-Floating Ring Bearings in High-Speed Turbocharger Rotordynamics

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

An efficient integrated energy system (IES) can enhance the potential of building energy conservation and carbon mitigation. However, imbalances between user-side demand and supply side output present formidable challenges to the operational dispatch of building energy systems. To mitigate heat rejection and improve dispatch optimization, an integrated building energy system incorporating waste heat recovery via an absorption heat pump based on the flow temperature model is adopted. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the correlation among heat pump operational strategies, thermal comfort, and the dynamic thermal storage capacity of piping network systems. The optimization calculations and comparative analyses were conducted across five cases on typical season days via the CPLEX solver with MATLAB R2018a. The simulation results indicate that the operational modes of absorption heat pump reduced the costs by 4.4–8.5%, while the absorption rate of waste heat increased from 37.02% to 51.46%. Additionally, the utilization ratio of battery and thermal storage units decreased by up to 69.82% at most after considering the pipeline thermal inertia and thermal comfort, thus increasing the system’s energy-saving ability and reducing the pressure of energy storage equipment, ultimately increasing the scheduling flexibility of the integrated building energy system. To improve the accuracy of heating load forecasting and effectively address the energy waste caused by supply–demand imbalances and uneven thermal distribution, this study innovatively proposes a hybrid prediction model incorporating seasonal adjustment strategies. The model establishes a dynamically adaptive forecasting framework through synergistic integration of the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. Specifically, VMD is first employed to decompose the historical heating load data from Arizona State University’s Tempe campus into multiple stationary modal components, aiming to reduce data complexity and suppress noise interference. Subsequently, the SSA is utilized to optimize the hyperparameters of the LSTM network, with targeted adjustments made according to the seasonal characteristics of the heating load, enabling the identification of optimal configurations for each season. Comprehensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed model achieves the lowest values across three key performance metrics—Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)—under various seasonal conditions. Notably, the MAPE values are reduced to 1.3824%, 0.9549%, 6.4018%, and 1.3272%, with average error reductions of 9.4873%, 3.8451%, 6.6545%, and 6.5712% compared to alternative models. These results strongly confirm the superior predictive accuracy and fitting capability of the proposed model, highlighting its potential to support energy allocation optimization in district heating systems. The production of thermal energy in buildings using internal greenhouses makes it possible to obtain substantial gains in energy consumption and, at the same time, contribute to improving occupants’ thermal comfort (TC) levels. This article proposes a study on the producing and transporting of renewable thermal energy in a circular auditorium equipped with an enveloping semi-circular greenhouse. The numerical study is based on software that simulates the building geometry and the building thermal response (BTR) numerical model and assesses the TC level and indoor air quality (IAQ) provided to occupants in spaces ventilated by the proposed system. The building considered in this study is a circular auditorium constructed from three semi-circular auditoriums supplied with internal semi-circular greenhouses. Each of the semi-circular auditoriums faces south, northeast, and northwest, respectively. The semi-circular auditoriums are occupied by 80 people each: the one facing south throughout the day, while the one facing northeast is only occupied in the morning, and the one facing northwest is only occupied in the afternoon. The south-facing semi-circular greenhouse is used by itself to heat all three semi-circular auditoriums. The other two semi-circular greenhouses are only used to heat the interior space of the greenhouse. It was considered that the building is located in a Mediterranean-type climate and subject to the typical characteristics of clear winter days. The results allow us to verify that the proposed heating system, in which the heat provided to the occupied spaces is generated only in the semi-circular greenhouse facing south, can guarantee acceptable TC conditions for the occupants throughout the occupancy cycle. Rail transit as a high-energy consumption field urgently requires the adoption of clean energy innovations to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the transition to new energy applications. As an energy-saving fluid machinery, the ejector exhibits significant application potential and academic value within this field. This paper reviewed the recent advances, technical challenges, research hotspots, and future development directions of ejector applications in rail transit, aiming to address gaps in existing reviews. (1) In waste heat recovery, exhaust heat is utilized for propulsion in vehicle ejector refrigeration air conditioning systems, resulting in energy consumption being reduced by 12~17%. (2) In vehicle pneumatic pressure reduction systems, the throttle valve is replaced with an ejector, leading to an output power increase of more than 13% and providing support for zero-emission new energy vehicle applications. (3) In hydrogen supply systems, hydrogen recirculation efficiency exceeding 68.5% is achieved in fuel cells using multi-nozzle ejector technology. (4) Ejector-based active flow control enables precise ± 20 N dynamic pantograph lift adjustment at 300 km/h. However, current research still faces challenges including the tendency toward subcritical mode in fixed geometry ejectors under variable operating conditions, scarcity of application data for global warming potential refrigerants, insufficient stability of hydrogen recycling under wide power output ranges, and thermodynamic irreversibility causing turbulence loss. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on developing dynamic intelligent control technology based on machine learning, designing adjustable nozzles and other structural innovations, optimizing multi-system efficiency through hybrid architectures, and investigating global warming potential refrigerants. These strategies will facilitate the evolution of ejector technology toward greater intelligence and efficiency, thereby supporting the green transformation and energy conservation objectives of rail transit. This study investigated the integration of advanced Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) within the design process of building energy systems, focusing on the water–energy nexus in the context of a real-life hospital building. It is based on a simulation approach, recognised as a viable means to analyse and enhance AWG potentialities. However, the current state of research does not address the issue of AWG integration within building plant systems. This study contributes to fill such a research gap by building upon an authors’ previous work and proposing an enhanced methodology. The methodology describes how to incorporate a multipurpose AWG system into the energy simulation environment of DesignBuilder (DB), version 7.0.0116, through its coupling with AWGSim, version 1.20d, a simulation tool specifically developed for atmospheric water generators. The chosen case study is a wing of the Mondino Hospital in Pavia, Italy, selected for its complex geometry and HVAC requirements. By integrating AWG outputs—covering water production, heating, and cooling—into DB, this study compared two configurations: the existing HVAC system and an enhanced version that includes the AWG as plant support. The simulation results demonstrated a 16.3% reduction in primary energy consumption (from 231.3 MWh to 193.6 MWh), with the elimination of methane consumption and additional benefits in water production (257 m3). This water can be employed for photovoltaic panel cleaning, further reducing the primary energy consumption to 101.9 MWh (55.9% less than the existing plant), and for human consumption or other technical needs. Moreover, this study highlights the potential of using AWG technology to supply purified water, which can be a pivotal solution for hospitals located in areas affected by water crises. This research contributes to the atmospheric water field by addressing the important issue of simulating AWG systems within building energy design tools, enabling informed decisions regarding water–energy integration at the project stage and supporting a more resilient and sustainable approach to building infrastructure. Global building energy consumption is significantly increasing. Utilizing renewable energy sources may be an effective approach to achieving low-carbon and energy-efficient buildings. A combined system incorporating solar photovoltaic–thermal (PV/T) components with an air-source heat pump (ASHP) was studied for simultaneous heating and power generation in a real residential building. The back panel of the PV/T component featured a novel polygonal Freon circulation channel design. A prototype of the combined heating and power supply system was constructed and tested in Fuzhou City, China. The results indicate that the average coefficient of performance (COP) of the system is 4.66 when the ASHP operates independently. When the PV/T component is integrated with the ASHP, the average COP increases to 5.37. On sunny days, the daily average thermal output of 32 PV/T components reaches 24 kW, while the daily average electricity generation is 64 kW·h. On cloudy days, the average daily power generation is 15.6 kW·h; however, the residual power stored in the battery from the previous day could be utilized to ensure the energy demand in the system. Compared to conventional photovoltaic (PV) systems, the overall energy utilization efficiency improves from 5.68% to 17.76%. The hot water temperature stored in the tank can reach 46.8 °C, satisfying typical household hot water requirements. In comparison to standard PV modules, the system achieves an average cooling efficiency of 45.02%. The variation rate of the system’s thermal loss coefficient is relatively low at 5.07%. The optimal water tank capacity for the system is determined to be 450 L. This system demonstrates significant potential for providing efficient combined heat and power supply for buildings, offering considerable economic and environmental benefits, thereby serving as a reference for the future development of low-carbon and energy-saving building technologies. The EU power market system has successfully maintained a centralized governance structure ensuring stable electricity supply and affordable prices for over two decades. However, the ongoing energy transition towards carbon neutrality has exposed critical governance limitations, leading to challenges in community projects implementation. Given that Heating and Cooling (H&C) accounts for more than 50% of the EU’s energy consumption, community H&C initiatives can drive local energy transitions and support renewable integration. This study analyzes the best practices from European community energy initiatives, supplemented by insights from the Energy Leap project. By employing a comparative analysis approach, the study proposes a technically sound and regulatory feasible governance model, alongside a robust ecosystem support framework. The proposed framework introduces new roles and new forms of partnerships between communities—private entities and consumers—taking advantage of the benefits offered by the operation of Energy Communities (ECs), enhancing community engagement and regulatory adaptability. These insights offer practical guidance and contribute to effective policymaking in support of the EU’s energy transition objectives. Full article
