Background: Undercover police work is a psychologically high-risk profession that exposes officers to chronic stress, identity conflicts, and moral dilemmas. The aim of the present review is to evaluate the psychological consequences associated with undercover police work, focusing on specific psychopathological risk factors. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies were conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada. The present systematic review analyzed data from 380 current undercover operatives, 372 former UCOs, 578 officers without undercover experience, and 60 pre-operational agents. Results: From an initial pool of 365 records, 10 studies were identified, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently reported psychological risk factors included anxiety, hypervigilance, identity issues, dissociative symptoms, and substance misuse. These were assessed using validated self-report instruments (e.g., SCL-90), structured interviews, and clinical evaluations. Long-term consequences were more prominent post-deployment, particularly among former UCOs. Conclusions: Undercover work is associated with an elevated risk of mental health problems, especially after the end of operations. Future research should focus on standardizing assessment tools and identifying protective factors. The findings support the development of targeted interventions such as pre-deployment psychological screening, ongoing monitoring, and structured reintegration programs to safeguard UCOs’ well-being. This study analyses the effectiveness of a contextualized teaching and learning sequence (TLS) based on forensic entomology (FE) to disprove the idea of spontaneous generation (SG) among students enrolled in the Higher Vocational Education and Training (VET) Cycle in Pathological Anatomy and Cytodiagnosis. Through an inquiry- and project-based learning approach, students replicate a version of Francesco Redi’s historical experiments, enabling them to engage with core scientific concepts such as the metamorphic cycle of insects and the role of entomology in forensic science. The research adopts a semiquantitative and exploratory design. It investigates: (1) whether students’ prior knowledge about FE and related biological processes is sufficient to refute SG; (2) to what extent this knowledge is influenced by their previous academic background and gender; and (3) whether a contextualized TLS can significantly enhance their conceptual understanding. The results reveal that most students begin with limited initial knowledge of FE and multiple misconceptions related to SG, irrespective of their previous study. Gender differences were observed at baseline, with women showing lower prior knowledge, but these differences disappeared after the intervention. The post-intervention data demonstrate a significant improvement in student’s ability to reject SG and explain biological processes coherently. The study highlights the importance of integrating entomology into health-related VET programs, both as a means to promote scientific literacy and correct misconceptions and as a pedagogical tool to foster critical thinking. It also highlights the potential and historically grounded methodologies to equalize learning outcomes and strengthen the scientific preparation of future healthcare professionals. Full article

Smart walking aids represent a growing trend in assistive technologies designed to support individuals with mobility impairments in their daily lives and rehabilitation. Previous research has introduced sensor-integrated systems that provide user feedback to enhance safety and functional mobility. However, a comprehensive overview of their technological and functional characteristics is lacking. To address this gap, this scoping review systematically mapped the current state of research in sensor-based walking aids, focusing on device types, sensor technologies, application contexts, target populations, and reported outcomes. In addition, integrated artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches for functional support and health monitoring were examined. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, 35 peer-reviewed articles were identified from three databases: ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science. Extracted data were thematically analyzed and synthesized across device types (e.g., walking canes, crutches, walkers, rollators) and use cases, including gait training, fall prevention, and daily support. Findings show that, while many prototypes show promising features, few have been evaluated in clinical settings or over extended periods. A lack of standardized methods for sensor location assessment, often the superficial implementation of feedback modalities, and limited integration with other assistive technologies were identified. In addition, system validation and user testing lack consensus, with few long-term studies and often incomplete demographic data. Diversity in data communication approaches and the heterogeneous use of AI algorithms were also notable. The review highlights key challenges and research opportunities to guide the future development of intelligent, user-centered mobility systems. Full article

(1) Background: Dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs), characterized by high toxicity and strong lipophilicity, which promote their bioaccumulation in human tissues. Their detection in breast milk raises concerns about early-life exposure during lactation. Although dietary intake is the primary route of maternal exposure, environmental pathways—including inhalation, dermal absorption, and residential proximity to contaminated sites—may also significantly contribute to the maternal body burden. (2) Methods: This narrative review examined peer-reviewed studies investigating maternal and environmental determinants of dioxin and dl-PCB concentrations in human breast milk. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2000–2024), identifying a total of 325 records. Following eligibility screening and full-text assessment, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria. (3) Results: The included studies consistently identified key exposure determinants, such as high consumption of animal-based foods (e.g., meat, fish, dairy), living near industrial facilities or waste sites, and maternal characteristics including age, parity, and body mass index (BMI). Substantial geographic variability was observed, with higher concentrations reported in regions affected by industrial activity, military pollution, or inadequate waste management. One longitudinal study from Japan demonstrated a declining trend in dioxin levels in breast milk, suggesting the potential effectiveness of regulatory interventions. (4) Conclusions: These findings highlight that maternal exposure to dioxins is influenced by identifiable environmental and behavioral factors, which can be mitigated through public health policies, targeted dietary guidance, and environmental remediation. Breast milk remains a critical bioindicator of human exposure. Harmonized, long-term research is needed to clarify health implications and minimize contaminant transfer to infants, particularly among vulnerable populations. Full article

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading global cause of death, with long-term hospitalization becoming increasingly frequent in advanced or chronic cases. In this context, the interplay between systemic factors such as lipid metabolism, circulating metabolites, gut microbiota, and oral health is gaining attention for its potential role in influencing inflammation, cardiometabolic risk, and long-term outcomes. Despite their apparent independence, these domains are increasingly recognized as interconnected and influential in cardiovascular pathophysiology. Methods: This narrative review was conducted by analyzing studies published between 2015 and 2024 from databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Keywords such as “lipid profile,” “metabolomics,” “gut microbiota,” “oral health,” and “cardiovascular disease” were used. Original research, meta-analyses, and reviews relevant to hospitalized cardiac patients were included. A critical integrative approach was applied to highlight cross-domain connections. Results and Discussion: Evidence reveals significant interrelations between altered lipid profiles, gut dysbiosis (including increased TMAO levels), metabolic imbalances, and oral inflammation. Each component contributes to a systemic pro-inflammatory state that worsens cardiovascular prognosis, particularly in long-term hospitalized patients. Despite isolated research in each domain, there is a paucity of studies integrating all four. The need for interdisciplinary diagnostic models and preventive strategies is emphasized, especially in populations with frailty or immobilization. Conclusions: Monitoring lipid metabolism, metabolomic shifts, gut microbial balance, and oral status should be considered part of comprehensive cardiovascular care. Gut microbiota exerts a dual role in cardiac health: when balanced, it supports anti-inflammatory and metabolic homeostasis; when dysbiotic, it contributes to systemic inflammation and worsened cardiac outcomes. Future research should aim to develop integrative screening tools and personalized interventions that address the multifactorial burden of disease. A systemic approach may improve both short- and long-term outcomes in this complex and vulnerable patient population. Full article

Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses significant health threats due to its multidrug-resistant profile, particularly affecting immunocompromised individuals. The pathogen’s ability to produce virulence factors and antibiotic-resistant biofilms, orchestrated through quorum-sensing (QS) mechanisms, complicates conventional therapeutic interventions. This review aims to critically assess the potential of anti-QS strategies as alternatives to antibiotics against P. aeruginosa infections. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on studies addressing QS inhibition strategies published recently. Anti-QS strategies significantly attenuate bacterial virulence by disrupting QS-regulated genes involved in biofilm formation, motility, toxin secretion, and immune evasion. These interventions reduce the selective pressure for resistance and enhance antibiotic efficacy when used in combination therapies. Despite promising outcomes, practical application faces challenges, including specificity of inhibitors, pharmacokinetic limitations, potential cytotoxicity, and bacterial adaptability leading to resistance. Future perspectives should focus on multi-target QS inhibitors, advanced delivery systems, rigorous preclinical validations, and clinical translation frameworks. Addressing current limitations through multidisciplinary research can lead to clinically viable QS-targeted therapies, offering sustainable alternatives to traditional antibiotics and effectively managing antibiotic resistance. The increase in the elderly population globally reflects a change in the population’s mindset regarding preventive health measures and necessitates a rethinking of healthcare strategies. The integration of machine learning (ML)-type algorithms in geriatrics represents a direction for optimizing prevention, diagnosis, prediction, monitoring, and treatment. This paper presents a systematic review of the scientific literature published between 1 January 2020 and 31 May 2025. The paper is based on the applicability of ML techniques in the field of geriatrics. The study is conducted using the Web of Science database for a detailed discussion. The most studied algorithms in research articles are Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and support vector machines. They are preferred due to their performance in processing incomplete clinical data. The performance metrics reported in the analyzed papers include the accuracy, sensitivity, F1-score, and Area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve. Nine search categories are investigated through four databases: WOS, PubMed, Scopus, and IEEE. A comparative analysis shows that the field of geriatrics, through an ML approach in the context of elderly nutrition, is insufficiently explored, as evidenced by the 61 articles analyzed from the four databases. The analysis highlights gaps regarding the explainability of the models used, the transparency of cross-sectional datasets, and the validity of the data in real clinical contexts. The paper highlights the potential of ML models in transforming geriatrics within the context of personalized predictive care and outlines a series of future research directions, recommending the development of standardized databases, the integration of algorithmic explanations, the promotion of interdisciplinary collaborations, and the implementation of ethical norms of artificial intelligence in geriatric medical practice. Integrating BIM curriculum into traditional construction management (CM) programs is essential to meet the increasing industry demand for BIM-ready graduates. However, academia struggles with BIM curriculum integration due to unfamiliar emerging BIM technologies, and the increased workload associated with curriculum transformation. Disciplines including nursing, health science, and medical overcame the same challenges using the ability-desire-knowledge-ability-reinforcement (ADKAR) change management model, while CM programs have not explored this model for BIM curriculum development. Thus, this research introduces the ADKAR change management lens to BIM curriculum development by proposing a practically modified and replicable ADKAR model for CM programs. Focus group interviews with 14 academics from the UK, USA, Korea, and Australia, revealed establishing a sense of urgency by appointing a BIM champion is the most critical step before the BIM curriculum development. Instant advice demystifying uncertain BIM concepts is recognised the most effective motivation among academia. Well-balanced BIM concept integrations is ‘sine qua non’ since excessively saturating BIM aspects across the program can dilute students’ essential domain knowledge. Students’ evaluation over the BIM curriculum were collected through a six-year longitudinal focus group interviews, revealing that progressive BIM learnings scaffolded from foundational concepts to advanced applications throughout their coursework is the most valuable. Background/Objectives: Health education plays a vital role in training health professionals and caregivers, supporting both prevention and the promotion of self-care. In this context, technology serves as a valuable ally by enabling continuous and flexible learning. Among the various domains of health education, nutrition stands out as a key element in the management of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), helping to prevent malnutrition and enhance patient well-being. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes within a learning pathway focused on food and nutrition in the context of ALS. Methods: This study adopted a longitudinal, quantitative design. The learning pathway, titled “Food and Nutrition in ALS,” consisted of four self-paced and self-instructional Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), offered through the Virtual Learning Environment of the Brazilian Health System (AVASUS). Participants included health professionals, caregivers, and patients from all five regions of Brazil. Participants had the autonomy to complete the courses in any order, with no prerequisites for enrollment. Results: Out of 14,263 participants enrolled nationwide, 182 were included in this study after signing the Informed Consent Form. Of these, 142 (78%) completed at least one course and participated in the educational intervention. A significant increase in knowledge was observed, with mean pre-test scores rising from 7.3 (SD = 1.8) to 9.6 (SD = 0.9) on the post-test across all courses (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The self-instructional, technology-mediated continuing education model proved effective in improving participants’ knowledge about nutrition in ALS. Future studies should explore knowledge retention, behavior change, and the impact of such interventions on clinical outcomes, especially in multidisciplinary care settings. Full article

Background/Objectives: The increasing incidence rates of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), particularly in fair-skinned populations, call for efforts to intensify health education of the general population in addressing this prevalent skin cancer type. As a preparatory step, this systematic review summarizes the published research on the knowledge and risk perception regarding KC among individuals without medical training. Methods: The review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024618851) and adheres to PRISMA guidelines. The databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycArticles, and PsycINFO were searched on 30 July 2024. Studies were eligible if knowledge and/or risk perception was assessed in lay people. Risk of bias (ROB) was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for prevalence studies. Comparable outcomes (e.g., awareness of terms for KC) were meta-analyzed. Results: Included reports (n = 17) were published between 1991 and 2024 with 16,728 individuals assessed. Awareness for the most common type of KC, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), was low (20.75% of respondents (95% confidence interval (CI): 15.24–27.61)), while more respondents were familiar with colloquial terms (60.9–72.8%). Meta-analysis indicated an underestimation of the frequency of KC, with only 7.21% (CI: 4.03–12.58) identifying BCC as the most common type of skin cancer. Furthermore, concern about developing KC as assessed in only two overlapping studies was reported by only 25–30% of respondents, indicating a significant gap in risk awareness and a lack of research on risk perception regarding KC. Conclusions: This review highlights the need for targeted health education interventions to improve knowledge and preventive behaviors regarding KC. Given the limitations of the included studies, characterized by high ROB, heterogeneity of results, and a lack of standardized assessment tools, further research is essential to enhance the understanding and awareness of KC in diverse populations. Understanding oncology physiotherapists’ perspectives on the subject of immune functioning is essential to explore its possible integration into clinical reasoning. This study aimed to assess the perspectives of oncology physiotherapists concerning immune functioning in oncology physiotherapy. For this qualitative research, semi-structured interviews were performed with Dutch oncology physiotherapists. Results were analyzed via inductive thematic analysis, followed by a validation step with participants. Fifteen interviews were performed. Participants’ ages ranged from 30 to 63 years. Emerging themes were (1) the construct ‘immune functioning’ (definition, and associations with this construct in oncology physiotherapy), (2) characteristics related to decreased immune functioning (in oncology physiotherapy), (3) negative and positive influences on immune functioning (in oncology physiotherapy), (4) tailored physiotherapy treatment, (5) treatment outcomes in oncology physiotherapy, (6) the oncology physiotherapist within cancer care, and (7) measurement and interpretation of immune functioning. In conclusion, oncology physiotherapists play an important role in the personalized and comprehensive care of patients with cancer. They are eager to learn more about immune functioning with the goal of better informing patients about the health effects of exercise and to tailor their training better. Future exercise-immunology research should clarify the effects of different exercise modalities on immune functioning, and how physiotherapists could evaluate these effects. Full article

The escalating global challenges of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and cancer necessitate innovative therapeutic solutions from natural sources. This study investigated the multifaceted therapeutic potential of pigment-enriched plant extracts. We screened diverse plant extracts for antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi. Hibiscus sabdariffa emerged as the most promising, demonstrating potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial and significant antibiofilm activity. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of H. sabdariffa robustly downregulated essential bacterial virulence genes and suppressed aflatoxin gene expression. Comprehensive chemical profiling via HPLC identified major anthocyanin glucosides, while GC-MS revealed diverse non-pigment bioactive compounds, including fatty acids and alcohols. Molecular docking suggested favorable interactions of key identified compounds (Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and 1-Deoxy-d-arabitol) with E. coli outer membrane protein A (OmpA), indicating potential antiadhesive and antimicrobial mechanisms. Furthermore, H. sabdariffa exhibited selective cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. These findings establish H. sabdariffa pigment-enriched extract as a highly promising, multi-functional source of novel therapeutics, highlighting its potential for simultaneously addressing drug resistance and cancer challenges through an integrated chemical, biological, and computational approach. Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a promising neuromodulatory tool for language rehabilitation in chronic aphasia. However, the effects of bi-hemispheric, multisite stimulation remain largely unexplored, especially in people with chronic and treatment-resistant language impairments. The goal of this study is to look at the effects on behavior and brain activity of an individualized language training program that combines bi-hemispheric multisite anodal tDCS with personalized language training for Albert, a patient with long-standing, treatment-resistant non-fluent aphasia. Methods: Albert, a right-handed retired physician, had transcortical motor aphasia (TCMA) subsequent to a left-hemispheric ischemic stroke occurring more than six years before the operation. Even after years of traditional treatment, his expressive and receptive language deficits remained severe and persistent despite multiple rounds of traditional therapy. He had 15 sessions of bi-hemispheric multisite anodal tDCS aimed at bilateral dorsal language streams, administered simultaneously with language training customized to address his particular phonological and syntactic deficiencies. Psycholinguistic evaluations were performed at baseline, immediately following the intervention, and at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months post-intervention. Resting-state fMRI was conducted at baseline and following the intervention to evaluate alterations in functional connectivity (FC). Results: We noted statistically significant enhancements in auditory sentence comprehension and oral reading, particularly at the 1- and 3-month follow-ups. Neuroimaging showed decreased functional connectivity (FC) in the left inferior frontal and precentral regions (dorsal stream) and in maladaptive right superior temporal regions, alongside increased FC in left superior temporal areas (ventral stream). This pattern suggests that language networks may be reorganizing in a more efficient way. There was no significant improvement in phonological processing, which may indicate reduced connectivity in the left inferior frontal areas. Conclusions: This case underscores the potential of combining individualized, network-targeted language training with bi-hemispheric multisite tDCS to enhance recovery in chronic, treatment-resistant aphasia. The convergence of behavioral gains and neuroplasticity highlights the importance of precision neuromodulation approaches. However, findings are preliminary and warrant further validation through controlled studies to establish broader efficacy and sustainability of outcomes. Full article

Art therapy serves as a crucial intervention modality for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), demonstrating unique value in emotional expression, sensory integration, and social communication. However, current practice presents critical challenges, including the disconnect between design expertise and clinical needs, unclear mechanisms of environmental factors’ impact on therapeutic outcomes, and insufficient evidence-based support for technology integration. Purpose: This study aimed to construct an evidence-based theoretical framework for art therapy environment design for children with autism, clarifying the relationship between environmental design elements and therapeutic effectiveness. Methodology: Based on the Web of Science database, this study employed a dual-track approach comprising bibliometric analysis and micro-qualitative content analysis to systematically examine the knowledge structure and developmental trends. Research hotspots were identified through keyword co-occurrence network analysis using CiteSpace, while 24 representative design cases were analyzed to gain insights into design concepts, emerging technologies, and implementation principles. Key Findings: Through keyword network visualization analysis, this study identified ten primary research clusters that were systematically categorized into four core design elements: sensory feedback design, behavioral guidance design, emotional resonance design, and therapeutic support design. A responsive therapeutic environment conceptual framework was proposed, encompassing four interconnected components based on the ABC model from positive psychology: emotional, sensory, environmental, and behavioral dimensions. Evidence-based design principles were established emphasizing child-centeredness, the promotion of multisensory expression, the achievement of dynamic feedback, and appropriate technology integration. Research Contribution: This research establishes theoretical connections between environmental design elements and art therapy effectiveness, providing a systematic design guidance framework for interdisciplinary teams, including environmental designers, clinical practitioners, technology developers, and healthcare administrators. The framework positions technology as a therapeutic mediator rather than a driver, ensuring technological integration supports rather than interferes with children’s natural creative impulses. This contributes to creating more effective environmental spaces for art therapy activities for children with autism while aligning with SDG3 goals for promoting mental health and reducing inequalities in therapeutic access. Objectives: Parental exposure to tobacco smoke is a significant public health concern, with over 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of maternal, paternal, and dual-parental cigarette smoke exposure on offspring reproductive health. Methods: Original human clinical and animal research studies were included; titles and abstracts were manually scanned for relevance to the effect of parental smoking on offspring reproductive outcomes (Date of search:18/03/2025). Results: This systematic review incorporates 30 studies identified from three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus). The results indicate that male offspring exhibit reduced spermatogenic capacity, characterized by decreased testicular size, lower sperm count, and impaired hormonal biosynthesis, with reductions of 30–40% in sperm production. Dual-parental smoking exacerbates these effects, with sperm counts averaging 85 million per ml in human male offspring from dual-smoking households, compared to 111 million per ml in single-smoking households. Animal studies provide mechanistic insights, revealing reduced testis weight in nicotine-exposed male rats and increased oxidative stress in offspring. Conclusions: This review highlights the dose-dependent and sex-specific effects of smoking on the fertility of offspring and underscores the need for standardized protocols to enhance the consistency and comparability of future research in both human and animal studies.
