The aim of our study is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the global distribution of suitable habitats for Sophora alopecuroides L., as well as how these habitats might change in response to climate change. We employed the MaxEnt niche model to integrate distribution data from the Global Biodiversity Information Platform, incorporating 19 bioclimatic factors. This approach enabled us to predict the potential geographic distribution of S. alopecuroides L. worldwide under both current climatic conditions and future greenhouse gas emission scenarios. The results were visualized via ArcGIS 10.8 software. The findings indicate that currently, the suitable habitat for S. alopecuroides L. spans 12,897,100 km2, with the majority situated in the arid regions of Central and Eastern Asia. The key environmental variables influencing its distribution are annual mean temperature, maximum temperature of the warmest month, precipitation of the warmest season, and mean temperature of the coldest season. For future climate projections, suitable habitats generally exhibit a shrinking trend. The most pronounced decrease is anticipated under the moderate greenhouse gas emission scenario (SSP245). However, under the high greenhouse gas emission scenario (SSP585), the suitable habitat area is projected to increase marginally by 2060. This dynamic change warning suggests that it is necessary to optimize climate adaptation strategies, strengthen ecological protection and restoration in suitable areas, so as to maintain the ecological service functions of S. alopecuroides L. in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, such as sand fixation and soil conservation, and maintain biodiversity, and provide basic guarantee for the sustainable development and utilization of its medicinal and forage resources. This study reveals the dynamic impact of climate change on the distribution of S. alopecuroides L. suitable areas, which not only provides a scientific basis for ecological restoration and S. alopecuroides L. resource protection in arid and semi-arid areas, but also has important practical significance for promoting the regional practice of the concept of sustainable development of “harmonious coexistence between man and nature.” Full article

Based on the imago Dei theory, this essay attempts to establish a correspondence between the union of natures in Christ and the relationship between man and creation, focusing attention on the communication of idioms and reciprocal indwelling. It compares the dominion that man is called to exercise over nature by divine vocation as an image of the hypostatic union, with the despotic dominion, so widespread in modern times, that reflects the fall and is characterized by conflict and not by harmony. Finally, it is maintained that the form of dominion inspired by the application of the Christological doctrine inserts man in necessity and the cosmic rhythms, favoring the development of a human community aligned with the liturgical cycle and founded on peace. This study builds an evaluation index system for the modernization of harmonious coexistence between man and nature from 2014 to 2024, including three criteria for ecological environmental protection, green economic transformation, and enhancement of people’s livelihood, to help Nanping City’s sustainable development and build a “Pilot Demonstration Zone for the Modernization of Harmonious Coexistence between Humans and Nature”. Despite the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, the study area’s modern development of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature increased from 2014 to 2024, narrowing the development gap between counties. The coupling coordination degree of the criterion layer is “high in the middle, low in the east and west, high in the south and low in the north”. Under the spatial spillover effect, counties with higher development stages radiate driving force on surrounding counties with lower development stages. In 2014, 2019, and 2024, resource agglomeration, social civilization progress, economic development, and government policy regulation drove harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in Nanping City. As the cornerstone of terrestrial ecosystems, forests have faced mounting challenges due to escalating human activities, jeopardizing their vital ecological functions and even their existence. It has become an important issue to explore how to promote harmonious coexistence of man and nature, or even to improve the forest ecological function (FEF) through human activities. Thus, in this study, we select the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in China as a typical region. Firstly, we assess the FEF at the county level and reveal their spatial distribution and agglomeration characteristics on the basis of the data from the Ninth National Forest Inventory of China. Then, using multiple linear regression (MLR) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) modeling, we further explore the overall impacts of different human activities on FEF and their spatial differences, respectively. Our findings underscored a moderate deficiency in the county-level FEF in the YRB, with pronounced positive spatial agglomerations. The high–high areas are primarily clustered in the southern and central mountainous areas, whereas low–low areas are distributed in the upstream warm temperate steppe and desert-grassland regions. Human activities exert substantial impacts on FEF, with distinct spatial heterogeneity in the coefficient and significance levels. The trend analysis indicates that FEF is more sensitive to the increase in living land, population density and forest protection in the east–west direction. And in the north–south direction, FEF is more easily affected by agricultural development, population growth and urbanization. This study verifies that natural factors dominate FEF in those regions where human activities are quite scarce, and also reveals that due to the inter-constraint or counteract effects among different human activities, FEF may still ultimately depend on the natural endowments in some populated regions. We point out the core human activity factors affecting FEF after excluding the interference from natural conditions. And we recommend that policymakers prioritize sustainable development strategies that mitigate the adverse impacts of human activities on forest ecosystems while promoting conservation efforts tailored to the unique characteristics of each region. In the process of China’s path to modernization, the concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature has become increasingly prominent. In the dual context of the development of human society and the improvement of ecological wellbeing, how to reasonably exert environmental regulation policies to actively address the problem of ecological overload has become an important challenge that we need to face urgently. Therefore, based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2021, this paper uses the three-dimensional ecological footprint model to evaluate the degree of interference of human activities on the ecological level and selects the difference-in-differences model to examine the impact of external policy shocks, namely, a carbon emissions trading pilot (CETP) policy, on ecological pressure and its transmission mechanism. The results show that moderate government intervention, unified market regulation, and positive industrial response jointly enhance the mitigation effect of CETP on ecological pressure. In areas with strong environmental regulation and a high level of green credit, the incentive effect of the carbon trading mechanism is more significant. In the context of the transformation from industrial civilization to ecological civilization, the findings provide practical guidance and paths for how regions and enterprises can effectively respond to CETP and how governments, markets, and industries can jointly reduce the ecological pressure on the environment. As an important part of ecological civilization construction and harmonious coexistence between man and nature, the importance of restorative environment construction in national forest parks is self-evident. In this paper, the national forest park in the Greater Khingan Mountains region covering a large area of primary forest is taken as the research object. Based on visual perception, PRS, skin conductance level, and eye tracking technology are used as evaluation indexes to conduct restoration experiments on individuals. Among 60 participants, the PRS total scores for lawn space, shady space, dense forest space, and hard space were 166.63, 164.63, 168.43, and 158.93, respectively, indicating good restorative benefits, with hard space scoring lower. SCR decreases for dense forest space (M = 0.52) were significantly greater than for hard space (M = 0.38), suggesting better stress reduction. Eye tracking data showed that dense forest space had the longest total fixation duration (M = 42.57) and hard space the highest fixation count (M = 42.73). The results show that the national forest park is beneficial to the recovery of individual psychology and physiology, and can reduce the pressure of people’s visual perception. The psychological and physiological restorative benefits of different spatial scene types are different. Moreover, there is correlation between the eye movement index, psychological evaluation index, and physiological evaluation index, which confirms the possibility of introducing the eye movement index into the study of restorative environments. This paper provides a fresh redemptive reading of Gen 3:16, viewed in light of a whole mosaic of canonical contexts and intertextual connections. These include, among others, the full equality without hierarchy of man and woman in Gen 1–2; the paradigmatic nature of egalitarian marriage with mutual submission between husband and wife in Gen 2:18–24; the rupture of husband–wife relationships in Gen 3:6–13; the covenant lawsuit of Gen 3:14–19; the meaning of mashal in Gen 1:16–18 and 4:7; the meaning of teshuqah and grammatical–syntactical parallels and contrasts in Gen 4:7 and Song 7:11 (Eng. v. 10); the redemptive aspects of the woman and her seed in Gen 3:15; and the intertextual connections with New Testament passages. Considering this mosaic of contexts and connections, it is suggested that Gen 3:16 must be viewed only in reference to marriage; it is never broadened to include man–woman gender relationships in general. In Gen 3:16, God provides a temporary, remedial measure to preserve harmony and unity in a ruptured marriage relationship, with an implicit call for husbands and wives to return as soon as possible from the mashal–teshuqah relationship to the paradigmatic egalitarian marriage set forth in Gen 2:24. This return to the divine creation ideal for marriage is empowered by the redemptive promises of Gen 3:15, confirmed in the reversal of the Gen 3:16 marital relationship articulated in the Song of Songs—the inspired commentary on Gen 1–3—particularly Song 7:11 [Eng. v. 10]), and reaffirmed in the consistent citations of Gen 2:24 (and not Gen 3:16) in the NT (Matt 19:5, 6; Eph 5:31). This article explores the question of the rate of digital progress in the context of the labour market. Specific features of the current situation are discussed: the temporality of socio-technological transformations, which is becoming less and less compatible with the harmonious development of man and society; the pace at which machines acquire intelligence; the total devaluation of mental labour; the unresolved issue of the role of man in the world of intelligent machines; and the criticality of the problem of the labour market due to its global nature, social significance and the rate of socio-technological changes. It is emphasised that these circumstances, already in the short term, threaten the sustainable development of global society, whose reactions to the transformation of technological and socio-economic infrastructure are significantly lagging behind. It is concluded that there is an urgent need to strengthen social responsibility, determined by the new ethics of relations between humans and machines with AI, supplemented by the primacy of the dignity of the social role of humans. The authors point out the urgent need to revise ideas about work as the main purpose of a person and about realisation in the profession as the main factor that determines the self-esteem of an individual and his social status. Many ethnic minority autonomous regions in China, mainly in mountainous areas, have caused great harm to people’s life and property safety due to frequent geological disasters. Therefore, it has become an urgent task for the government to create a system for predicting, preventing and effectively responding to disasters, and to strengthen the ability of relevant regions to jointly resist disasters. This paper takes Mabian Yi Autonomous County as the research object, and studies the disaster management of Mabian Yi Autonomous County. The research focuses on geological disaster vulnerability evaluation, geological disaster hazard evaluation, geological disaster risk evaluation, and geological disaster carrying capacity evaluation. The two elements of geological disaster risk evaluation are vulnerability evaluation and hazard evaluation. The main element of geological disaster carrying capacity evaluation is risk evaluation. Through evaluation, it is found that the central and eastern regions of Mabian Yi Autonomous County can be used as population concentration areas and develop modern agriculture and tourism. The western and northeastern regions can be used as nature reserves. Based on the above evaluation results, the disaster management opinions of Mabian Yi Autonomous County are given. This makes the government have a certain reference basis in the preparation of regional construction policy planning. From the perspective of unique disaster management, this paper provides the government with a political governance model for ethnic minority areas through the harmonious development of man and nature, to achieve a goal of sustainable development. The landscape of an area is not only made up of natural elements but also of man-made elements represented by civil and agricultural artefacts and much more. These elements used to blend aesthetically and harmoniously with the landscape itself thanks to the use of local building materials. Particularly, this contribution examines the use of the travertine in the architecture of the Tuscany region from the Etruscan time to the contemporary age. In Tuscany, travertine is a remarkable example of an identity stone of the territory, so rich in thermal springs that favoured the formation of large deposits of this stone widely used in public and private buildings both in interior design and urban furnishing. The work was carried out through a survey in the Tuscan territory and collection of bibliographic information on the architectural web sites. The survey made it possible to collect a photographic documentation and to assess the state of conservation through the empirical observation of the morphologies of decay when present. Indeed, this stone material in the Mediterranean climate, which characterises Tuscany, shows a good durability against atmospheric agents but may be affected by a chromatic alteration that tends to give the surfaces a greyish appearance. This aesthetic issue is more evident in the Tuscan travertine due to is classic whitish colour. Full article

This paper investigates the term “sea” (hai) in the four-character Chinese idioms according to conceptual metaphor and metonymy theory, attempting to illustrate their conceptualization, determine their possible underlying motivations, and explore Chinese maritime thought and culture. Based on idiomatic expressions, three types of conceptual metaphors are identified: abstract qualities of concrete entities are the sea, abstract entity is sea, and a certain aspect of a human being is sea. Moreover, the four types of conceptual metonymies are the part for the whole, the whole for the part, the place for the product, and the place for the responsible deities or goddesses. They are motivated by a culture of worship of and accordance with nature, the pursuit of achievements in traditional Chinese literature, “man paid, nature made” as the attitude towards the ups and downs of life, and a self-centered conceptualization of the world. The maritime culture represented in these conceptualizations comprises fear of and respect for the sea, harmony between humans and the sea, and static–dynamic integrations of river, land, and sea. The findings show that the motivations of these conceptualizations do not only originate from the embodiment and Chinese philosophy of the unity of heaven and humanity but are also constrained by the most influential talent selection mechanism, the Imperial Examination System, as well as by agriculture, the foundation of the economy in ancient China. Voltaire praised Alexander Pope’s poem, An Essay on Man, as a magnificent and profound philosophical work that garnered widespread popularity and had a significant impact. It was believed that the poem’s philosophical concepts were influenced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who drew inspiration from Jesuit writings and regarded Neo-Confucianism as China’s “natural theology”. In December 1897, Yan Fu translated six lines from Pope’s poem into Chinese as a part of his translation of Tianyan lun. Subsequently, Timothy Richard and Ren Tingxu collaborated for five months to translate An Essay on Man into Chinese, known as Tianlun shi (A Poem of Heavenly Ethics), which was published in mid-summer 1898. This Chinese translation became the first extensive Western poem to be translated into Chinese. It consisted of four parts, with over 1300 lines in its original form and approximately 17,200 Chinese characters in translation. Ren rendered Pope’s heroic couplets into a quatrain-style Chinese poem. The term “Tianlun” (Heavenly Ethic) was derived from Young John Allen’s theory, which aimed to supplement Confucian ethics by illustrating the “man and heaven” (or “man and God”) relationship. The poem successfully intertwined Christian and Confucian ideas, harmoniously blending the two discourses of natural theology and Neo-Confucianism. Ren’s literary embellishments played a significant role in this remarkable achievement. Richard and Ren’s translation of the poem served various purposes, including introducing Western knowledge to China and promoting political reform. Full article

The evolution of Marx’s ideation was accompanied by a continuous, in-depth understanding of human essence. From the promotion of human self-consciousness to the status of divinity to the transformation of humans into a human essence, his thoughts turned from idealism to humanistic material. Subsequently, from the fact that a human is the embodiment of human essence to the fact that man is the sum of all social relationships, Marx finally turned to practical materialism. Marx’s thoughts on human essence illustrated the beautiful development of mankind and the assumption of personal, happy life. He uncovered the beauty of human nature, labor, harmony, and practice in human essence and pursued the return of human essence to “beauty” throughout his life. In the contemporary era, with the popularization of artificial intelligence, the development of the machine industry in the 19th century precipitated problems similar to those faced today regarding unemployment and how human development has caused machines to replace people due to today’s popularization of intelligence. Today, Marx’s thoughts on human essence still offer insights and hold practical significance. Full article

Ginling College is the first women’s college founded by the American Christian Church in Nanjing, China, in the early 20th century. The architectural style of the school reflects the orientation of the “Chinese localization” of the Christian Church at that time. It is a representative work of the revival of traditional Chinese architecture. It is known as a “Renaissance of Chinese traditional architecture” and profoundly influenced later generations. Due to its important historical status and artistic value, the Ginling College complex has been designated by the Chinese government as a national key cultural relic protection unit and China’s 20th-century architectural heritage, and the protection scope of the Ginling College historical district has been specially designated for overall protection. Currently, little research has been conducted on this historic area, so the authors undertook this project. This paper adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods for research, starting from the two aspects of architectural art and sustainable design, and analyzes in detail the artistic characteristics of the project, the structural materials obtained locally, and the sustainable design method that utilizes natural lighting and ventilation to explore a modern campus design method based on the concept of sustainable design with a “combination of Chinese and Western architectural art”. Through artistic creation and technological innovation, traditional Chinese revival architecture has realized a harmonious coexistence between man and nature, embodying the design concept of sustainable development, and promoting the development of architecture and the region. The Impact of Technology Innovation on Urban Land Intensive Use in China: Evidence from 284 Cities in China

How to improve the level of urban land intensive use (ULIU) has been of wide concern to academic circles. Technology innovation, as the internal driving force of economic development, has an important impact on ULIU. To clarify the impacts of technology innovation on ULIU, this study measures the ULIU level index of China from 2006 to 2019 from four dimensions: the input-output level of economic efficiency, the carrying capacity of ecological environment, the harmony of the man-land relationship and the rationality of relationships between regions. On this basis, as there are different production technologies and land use technologies between cities, the differences of ULIU in different regions are analysed. Using the spatial econometric model, this study empirically analyzes the impact of technology innovation on ULIU. In addition, considering the differences in geographical distribution, natural resource endowment and technological type, this study analyzes the heterogeneous impact of technology innovation on ULIU. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The level of ULIU and technology innovation in China is increasing year by year. The level of ULIU and technology innovation in the eastern region is higher than that in the central and western regions. (2) From the spatial perspective, ULIU has a significant positive spatial spillover effect. (3) On the whole, technology innovation significantly improves the level of ULIU. (4) The impact of technology innovation in different regions, different types of cities and different types of technologies on ULIU is heterogeneous. Our results not only enrich the research on the relationship between technology innovation and ULIU, but also provide a reference for the formulation of relevant policies. Full article
