The Union of the Comoros, located in the Indian Ocean, faces persistent energy challenges due to its geographic isolation, heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels, and underdeveloped electricity infrastructure. This study investigates the techno-economic optimization of a hybrid microgrid designed to supply electricity to a rural village in Grande Comore. The proposed system integrates photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, a diesel generator, and battery storage. Detailed modeling and simulation were conducted using HOMER Energy, accompanied by a sensitivity analysis on solar irradiance, wind speed, and diesel price. The results indicate that the optimal configuration consists solely of PV and battery storage, meeting 100% of the annual electricity demand with a competitive levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of 0.563 USD/kWh and zero greenhouse gas emissions. Solar PV contributes over 99% of the total energy production, while wind and diesel components remain unused under optimal conditions. Furthermore, the system generates a substantial energy surplus of 63.7%, which could be leveraged for community applications such as water pumping, public lighting, or future system expansion. This study highlights the technical viability, economic competitiveness, and environmental sustainability of 100% solar microgrids for non-interconnected island territories. The approach provides a practical and replicable decision-support framework for decentralized energy planning in remote and vulnerable regions. Full article

As urbanization accelerates and climate change intensifies, the ecological integrity of urban riparian forests faces growing threats, underscoring the need for a systematic framework to guide their sustainable management. To address this gap, we developed a causal framework by applying text mining and sentence classification to 1001 abstracts from previous studies, structured within the DPSIR (Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response) model. The analysis identified six dominant thematic clusters—water quality, ecosystem services, basin and land use management, climate-related stressors, anthropogenic impacts, and greenhouse gas emissions—which reflect the multifaceted concerns surrounding urban riparian forest research. These themes were synthesized into a structured causal model that illustrates how urbanization, land use, and pollution contribute to ecological degradation, while also suggesting potential restoration pathways. To validate its applicability, the framework was applied to four major urban streams in Seoul, where indicator-based analysis and correlation mapping revealed meaningful linkages among urban drivers, biodiversity, air quality, and civic engagement. Ultimately, by integrating large-scale text mining with causal inference modeling, this study offers a transferable approach to support adaptive planning and evidence-based decision-making under the uncertainties posed by climate change. The integration of digital twin technology with robotic automation holds significant promise for advancing sustainable horticulture in controlled environment agriculture. This article presents DigiHortiRobot, a novel AI-driven digital twin architecture tailored for hydroponic greenhouse systems. The proposed framework integrates real-time sensing, predictive modeling, task planning, and dual-arm robotic execution within a modular, IoT-enabled infrastructure. DigiHortiRobot is structured into three progressive implementation phases: (i) monitoring and data acquisition through a multimodal perception system; (ii) decision support and virtual simulation for scenario analysis and intervention planning; and (iii) autonomous execution with feedback-based model refinement. The Physical Layer encompasses crops, infrastructure, and a mobile dual-arm robot; the virtual layer incorporates semantic modeling and simulation environments; and the synchronization layer enables continuous bi-directional communication via a nine-tier IoT architecture inspired by FIWARE standards. A robot task assignment algorithm is introduced to support operational autonomy while maintaining human oversight. The system is designed to optimize horticultural workflows such as seeding and harvesting while allowing farmers to interact remotely through cloud-based interfaces. Compared to previous digital agriculture approaches, DigiHortiRobot enables closed-loop coordination among perception, simulation, and action, supporting real-time task adaptation in dynamic environments. Experimental validation in a hydroponic greenhouse confirmed robust performance in both seeding and harvesting operations, achieving over 90% accuracy in localizing target elements and successfully executing planned tasks. The platform thus provides a strong foundation for future research in predictive control, semantic environment modeling, and scalable deployment of autonomous systems for high-value crop production. The Arctic Ocean is turning blue. Abrupt Arctic warming and amplification is driving rapid sea ice decline and irreversible deglaciation of Greenland. The already emerging, substantial consequences for the planet and society are intensifying and yet, model-based projections lack validatory consensus. To date, we cannot anticipate how a blue Arctic will respond to and amplify an increasingly warmer future climate, nor how it will impact the wider planet and society. Climate projections are inconclusive as we critically lack key Arctic geological archives that preserved the answers. This “Arctic Challenge” of global significance can only be addressed by investigating the processes, consequences, and impacts of past “greenhouse” (warmer-than-present) climate states. To address this challenge, the ERC Synergy Grant project Into the Blue (i2B) is undertaking a program of research focused on retrieving new Arctic geological archives of past warmth and key breakthroughs in climate model performance to deliver a ground-breaking, synergistic framework to answer the central question: “Why and what were the global ramifications of a “blue” (ice-free) Arctic during past warmer-than-present climates?” Here, we present the proposed research plan that will be conducted as part of this program. Into the Blue will quantify cryosphere (sea ice and land ice) change in a warmer world that will form the scientific basis for understanding the dynamics of Arctic cryosphere and ocean changes to enable the quantitative assessment of the impact of Arctic change on ocean biosphere, climate extremes, and society that will underpin future cryosphere-inclusive IPCC assessments. Electric buses are key in the strategy towards a greenhouse-gas-neutral fleet. However, their restrictions in terms of range and refueling as well as their increased price point present new challenges for public transport companies. This study aims to address, based on real-world operational data, how energy consumption and charging behavior affect battery aging and how operational strategies can be optimized to extend battery life under realistic conditions. This article presents an energy consumption analysis with respect to ambient temperatures and average vehicle speed based exclusively on real-world data of an urban bus fleet, providing a data foundation for range forecasting and infrastructure planning optimized for public transport needs. Additionally, the State of Charge (SOC) window during operation and vehicle idle time as well as the charging power were analyzed in this case study to formulate recommendations towards a more battery-friendly treatment. The central research question is whether battery-friendly operational strategies—such as reduced charging power and lower SOC windows—can realistically be implemented in daily public transport operations. The impact of the recommendations on battery lifetime is estimated using a battery aging model on drive cycles. Finally, the reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel buses is estimated. With the intensification of urbanization, resulting in the growing building stock, building operations have become the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. However, the relationship between urban form and carbon emissions remains unclear, which limits the sustainable development of cities. This study reviews the definition of carbon sources, data characteristics, and evaluation methods of carbon emissions. In addition, the impact of urban form on building carbon emissions at the macro, meso, and micro scales is reviewed, and low-carbon design strategies for urban form are discussed. Finally, the existing problems in this field are pointed out, and future research directions are proposed. Our review found that small and medium-sized compact cities tend to have less carbon emissions, while large cities and megacities with compact urban forms have more carbon emissions. The carbon reduction design of urban form at the meso scale is often achieved by improving the microclimate. Developing a research framework for the impact mechanism of building carbon emissions in a coordinated manner with multi-scale urban forms can effectively promote the development of low-carbon sustainable cities. This review can assist urban planners and energy policymakers in selecting appropriate methods to formulate and implement low-carbon city analysis and planning projects based on limited available resources. Stope dilution is a major hidden cost driver for the underground operation, especially in terms of reducing ore quality, increasing the amount of processing feed, and effects on operational cost. Accurate calculation and consideration of planned and unplanned dilution and mining loss amounts are essential during mine planning. The user interface named D–Loss has been developed with MATLAB R2023b, which provides a multiparadigm numerical computing environment for faster and more practical calculation of these dilution amounts to address these challenges by quantifying dilution and linking them directly to economic and CO2 emissions indicators. By determination and analysis of the stope overall dilution amounts, it helps us understand greenhouse gas emissions and ensures the efficient use of underground equipment. Calculation of stope dilution in a practical and rapid manner allows for stope design and operational improvements, which can help reduce dilution in underground operations. This progress is tracked through the D–Loss interface within the short- and long-term production planning. Moreover, by quantifying dilution impacts on comminution and haulage costs, D–Loss becomes a critical software for tracking economic losses and optimizing financial outcomes in the mining industry. D–Loss helps users iteratively assess the efficiency of updates and provides support in mine design, scheduling, and environmental impact control by comparing planning and operational improvements before and after. In response to the global imperative of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the optimisation of renewable energy systems under regionally favourable conditions has become increasingly essential. Solar irradiance forecasting plays a pivotal role in enhancing energy planning, grid reliability, and long-term sustainability. However, in the context of Turkey, existing studies on solar radiation forecasting often rely on traditional statistical approaches and are limited to single-site analyses, with insufficient attention to regional diversity and deep learning-based modelling. To address this gap, the present study focuses on Turkey’s Mediterranean region, characterised by high solar potential and diverse climatic conditions and strategically relevant to national clean energy targets. Historical data from 2020 to 2023 were used to forecast solar irradiance patterns up to 2026. Five representative locations—Adana, Isparta, Fethiye, Ulukışla, and Yüreğir—were selected to capture spatial and temporal variability across inland, coastal, and high-altitude zones. Advanced deep learning models, including artificial neural networks (ANN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), were developed and evaluated using standard performance metrics. Among these, BiLSTM achieved the highest accuracy, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.95, RMSE = 0.22, and MAPE = 5.4% in Fethiye, followed by strong performance in Yüreğir (R = 0.90, RMSE = 0.12, MAPE = 7.2%). These results demonstrate BiLSTM’s superior capacity to model temporal dependencies and regional variability in solar radiation. The findings contribute to the development of location-specific forecasting frameworks and offer valuable insights for renewable energy planning and grid integration in solar-rich environments. In recent years, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have increased at the fastest rates ever recorded. This is a trend that contradicts global efforts to stabilise greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations and prevent long-term climate change. Over 90% of global transport relies on oil-based fuels. The continued use of diesel and petrol raises concerns related to oil costs, supply security, GHG emissions, and the release of air pollutants and volatile organic compounds. This study explored electric vehicle (EV) charging networks by assessing environmental impacts through GHG and petroleum savings, developing dynamic pricing strategies, and forecasting infrastructure needs. A substantial dataset of over 259,000 EV charging records from Palo Alto, California, was statistically analysed. Machine learning models were applied to generate insights that support sustainable and economically viable electric transport planning for policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders. Findings indicate that GHG and gasoline savings are directly proportional to energy consumed, with conversion rates of 0.42 kg CO2 and 0.125 gallons per kilowatt-hour (kWh), respectively. Additionally, dynamic pricing strategies such as a 20% discount on underutilised days and a 15% surcharge during peak hours are proposed to optimise charging behaviour and improve station efficiency. The architectural, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) sector is one of the main contributors to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, making the renovation of the existing building stock a priority. However, defining effective and economically sustainable interventions remains a challenge, partly due to the variability of building characteristics and the lack of digital tools to support data-driven decision making. This research aims to identify the main factors influencing the energy consumption of buildings by analyzing a large database of building characteristics using machine learning algorithms. Based on the parameters that the analysis shows to have the greatest impact, the average cost of energy retrofitting measures will be used to elaborate a cost–benefit analysis model and the economic payback time for each measure, individually or in combination. The expected result is the creation of a tool that will allow the operator to evaluate the choice of interventions based on the energy efficiency that can be achieved and/or the economic sustainability. The proposed methodology aims to provide a digital approach that is replicable and adaptable to different territorial realities and useful for strategic planning of energy transformation in the building sector. Using innovative and sustainable materials has become crucial for developed countries. Reusing waste as a secondary raw material in industrial processes central to the circular economy could enhance environmental sustainability and support local economies. Building materials such as Portland cement have a significant environmental impact due to greenhouse gas emissions and construction and demolition waste (CDW), which is challenging to recycle. Research into sustainable alternatives is, therefore, essential. The European Union has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) supports the green transition in Italy by promoting sustainable materials like geopolymers. These ceramic-like materials are based on aluminosilicates obtained through the chemical activation of waste rich in silica and aluminosilicate compounds. Though promising, these materials require further research to address challenges like long-term durability and chemical variability. Collaboration between scientific research and industry is essential to develop specific protocols and suitable infrastructures. This article provides a critical review of the advancements and challenges in using alkali-activated waste as construction binders, focusing on Italy, and encourages the exploration of alternative sustainable materials beyond conventional Portland cement. This study investigates the deployment of VERIFY, a dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) tool, tailored to evaluate the energy and environmental performance of building renovation strategies. The tool was applied to three diverse building renovation projects across Europe, offering insights into how life cycle-based tools can enhance decision-making by integrating operational data and modeling of energy systems. The paper highlights how VERIFY captures both embodied and operational impacts—addressing limitations of conventional energy assessments—and aligns with EU frameworks such as Level(s). Key findings from the case studies in Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands demonstrate how LCA/LCC-based approaches can support energy efficiency objectives and guide sustainability-aligned renovation investments. Across the three case studies, the tool demonstrated up to 51% reduction in primary energy demand, 66% decrease in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions, and 51% reduction in life cycle costs. These outcomes provide researchers with a validated dynamic LCA/LCC framework and offer practitioners a replicable methodology for planning and evaluating sustainability-driven renovations. Despite their advantages, the effective use of LCA tools in energy renovation faces challenges, including limited data availability, regulatory fragmentation, and methodological complexity. The paper concludes that advanced tools such as VERIFY, when harmonized with evolving EU energy performance and sustainability standards, can strengthen the evidence base for deep energy renovation and carbon reduction in the building sector. Aviation is widely recognised to have global-scale climate impacts through the formation of ozone (O3) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), driven by emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). Ozone is known to be one of the most potent greenhouse gases formed from the interaction of aircraft emission plumes with atmospheric species. This paper follows up on previous research, where a Photochemical Trajectory Model was shown to be a robust measure of ozone formation along flight trajectories post-flight. We use a combination of a global Lagrangian chemistry-transport model and a box model to quantify the impacts of aircraft NOX on UTLS ozone over a five-day timescale. This work expands on the spatial and temporal range, as well as the chemical accuracy reported previously, with a greater range of NOX chemistry relevant chemical species. Based on these models, route optimisation has been investigated, through the use of network theory and algorithms. This is to show the potential inclusion of an understanding of climate-sensitive regions of the atmosphere on route planning can have on aviation’s impact on Earth’s Thermal Radiation balance with existing resources and technology. Optimised flight trajectories indicated reductions in O3 formation per unit NOX are in the range 1–40% depending on the spatial aspect of the flight. Temporally, local winter times and equatorial regions are generally found to have the most significant O3 formation per unit NOX; moreover, hotspots were found over the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Road transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Thailand. This study assesses the potential for GHG mitigation in the road transport sector from 2018 to 2030. Emission factors for various vehicle types and technologies were derived using the International Vehicle Emissions (IVE) model. Emissions were then estimated based on country-specific vehicle data. In the baseline year 2018, total emissions were estimated at 23,914.02 GgCO2eq, primarily from pickups (24.38%), trucks (20.96%), passenger cars (19.48%), and buses (16.95%). Multiple mitigation scenarios were evaluated, including the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), improvements in fuel efficiency, and a shift to renewable energy. Results indicate that transitioning all newly registered passenger cars (PCs) to EVs while phasing out older models could lead to a 16.42% reduction in total GHG emissions by 2030. The most effective integrated scenario, combining the expansion of electric vehicles with improvements in internal combustion engine efficiency, could achieve a 41.96% reduction, equivalent to 18,378.04 GgCO2eq. These findings highlight the importance of clean technology deployment and fuel transition policies in meeting Thailand’s climate goals, while providing a valuable database to support strategic planning and implementation. Lifestyle blocks (LBs) are small rural holdings primarily used for residential and recreational purposes rather than commercial farming. Despite the rapid expansion of LBs over the last 25 years, which has been driven by lifestyle amenity preference and land subdivision incentives, their environmental performance remains understudied. This is the case even though their proliferation is leading to an irreversible loss of highly productive soils and accelerating land fragmentation in peri-urban areas. Through undertaking a systematic literature review of relevant studies on LBs in New Zealand and comparable international contexts, this paper aims to quantify existing knowledge and suggest future research needs and management strategies. It focuses on the environmental implications of LB activities in relation to water consumption, food production, energy use, and biodiversity protection. The results indicate that variation in land use practices and environmental awareness among LB owners leads to differing environmental outcomes. LBs offer opportunities for biodiversity conservation and small-scale food production through sustainable practices, while also presenting environmental challenges related to resource consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and loss of productive land for commercial agriculture. Targeted landscape design could help mitigate the environmental pressures associated with these properties while enhancing their potential to deliver ecological and sustainability benefits. The review highlights the need for further evaluation of the environmental sustainability of LBs and emphasises the importance of property design and adaptable planning policies and strategies that balance environmental sustainability, land productivity, and lifestyle owners’ aspirations. It underscores the potential for LBs to contribute positively to environmental management while addressing associated challenges, providing valuable insights for ecological conservation and sustainable land use planning.
