The reduction of environmental pollutant emissions—including greenhouse gases, particulate matter, and other harmful substances—represents one of the foremost challenges in climate policy, economics, and industrial management today. Excessive emissions of CO2, NOX, and suspended particulates exert significant impacts on climate change as well as human health and welfare. Consequently, numerous studies and regulatory and technological initiatives are underway to mitigate these emissions. One critical area is intra-plant transport within manufacturing facilities, which, despite its localized scope, can substantially contribute to a company’s total emissions. This paper aims to assess the potential of computer simulation using FlexSim software as a decision-support tool for planning inter-operational transport, with a particular focus on environmental aspects. The study analyzes real operational data from a selected production plant (case study), concentrating on the optimization of the number of transport units, their routing, and the layout of workstations. It is hypothesized that reducing the number of trips, shortening transport routes, and efficiently utilizing transport resources can lead to lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX). The findings provide a basis for a broader adoption of digital tools in sustainable production planning, emphasizing the integration of environmental criteria into decision-making processes. Furthermore, the results offer a foundation for future analyses that consider the development of green transport technologies—such as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles—in the context of their implementation in the internal logistics of manufacturing enterprises. Road transport is a major contributor to air pollution, necessitating sustainable solutions for urban logistics. This study presents a time-dependent vehicle routing problem (VRP) model aimed at minimizing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while addressing stochastic customer demands. By incorporating key environmental factors such as road gradients, vehicle load, temperature, wind direction, and asphalt type, the proposed model provides a comprehensive approach to reducing transportation-related pollutants. To solve the computationally complex problem, a hybrid algorithm combining the gray wolf optimizer (GWO) and the multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is introduced. The algorithm demonstrates superior performance, achieving an error rate of less than 2% for medium-scale problems and significantly reducing fuel and driver costs. Sensitivity analyses reveal the profound impact of environmental parameters, with wind speed and direction altering optimal routing in over 80% of cases for large-scale instances. This research advances green logistics by integrating dynamic environmental considerations into routing decisions, balancing economic objectives with sustainability. The proposed model and algorithm offer a scalable solution to real-world challenges, enabling policymakers and logistics planners to improve environmental outcomes while maintaining operational efficiency. This study aims to develop a process to calculate the carbon footprint of a company in the textile sector for the automotive industry, thus addressing a research gap identified in this sector. Based on a structured calculation model, the project aspires to innovate by quantifying not only the greenhouse gas emissions at different stages of the company’s operations, including those generated by the consumed electricity and gas, but also the emissions related to external and in-house transportation and solid waste management. The approach includes the design of a specific calculator, capable of integrating variables such as energy consumption, transport and types of waste, analysing them in the light of recognised conversion factors. This tool not only allows for a detailed assessment of emissions but also supports strategic decision-making, guiding the implementation of more sustainable business practices. The results indicate that, considering the use of renewable energy sources, the company’s total emissions amount to approximately 18 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. On the other hand, considering non-renewable energy, purchased electricity accounts for 31 thousand megawatt-hours per year, corresponding to 5 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, with the twisting area being the largest consumer at 89% of total usage, followed by the dipping area. In terms of mobile combustion, raw materials contribute 1373 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, while finished products generate 1869 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Among the most impactful variables, solid waste, and stationary combustion stand out as the main contributors. These findings highlight the need for concrete measures to mitigate climate change, such as transitioning from stationary natural gas combustion to green electric power; identifying companies with more suitable waste treatment solutions, process changes that reduce disposable, and easily substitutable materials; making use of green electricity; exploring alternative transport methods or combining different modes, such as using electric vehicles for short distances; and optimizing transport routes. These initiatives reinforce the company’s commitment to sustainable development goals and the promotion of responsible environmental practices. Full article

To advance energy conservation and emissions reduction in urban logistics systems, this study focuses on the green vehicle routing problems with time windows (GVRPTWs), which remains underexplored in balancing environmental and service quality objectives. We propose a comprehensive multi-objective optimization framework that addresses this gap by simultaneously minimizing total distribution costs and carbon emissions while maximizing customer satisfaction, quantified based on the vehicle’s arrival time at the customer location. The rationale for adopting this tri-objective formulation lies in its ability to reflect real-world trade-offs between economic efficiency, environmental performance, and service level, which are often considered in isolation in previous studies. To tackle this complex problem, we develop an improved Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III) that incorporates three key enhancements: (1) an integer-encoded initialization method to enhance solution feasibility, (2) a refined selection strategy utilizing crowding distance to maintain population diversity, and (3) an embedded 2-opt local search operator to prevent premature convergence and avoid local optima. Comprehensive validation experiments using Solomon’s benchmark instances and a real-world case demonstrate that the presented algorithm consistently outperforms several state-of-the-art multi-objective optimization methods across key performance metrics. These results highlight the effectiveness and practical relevance of our approach in advancing energy-efficient, low-emission, and customer-centric urban logistics systems. Full article

Flower collection constitutes a critical segment of the flower logistics chain, and its efficiency significantly influences the industry. However, the energy consumption and carbon emissions that occur in the flower collection process present a great challenge for realizing efficient flower collection. To this end, this study proposes a green vehicle routing planning model that incorporates multiple factors, such as fixed costs, refrigeration costs, transportation costs, and so on, to minimize the total costs under hard time window constraints. Moreover, a Genetic Neighborhood Comprehensive Spider Wasp Algorithm (GN_CSWA) is proposed to find the solution to this problem. The random generation and the nearest neighbor algorithms are employed to construct the initial solution, followed by roulette selection, elite selection, and a best individual retention strategy to refine the population for the next iteration. A crossover operator is applied to facilitate global exploration, while six neighborhood search operators are applied to further enhance the quality of the solution. Moreover, to prevent the algorithm from converging to a local optimum, two mutation operators are introduced to generate new solutions. The effectiveness of the proposed optimizer is validated through extensive experimental results. Full article

Airports are complex environments where efficient localization and intelligent traffic management are essential for ensuring smooth navigation and operational efficiency for both pedestrians and Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs). This study presents an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven airport traffic management system that integrates Visible Light Communication (VLC), rerouting techniques, and adaptive reward mechanisms to optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety. VLC-enabled luminaires serve as transmission points for location-specific guidance, forming a hybrid mesh network based on tetrachromatic LEDs with On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation and SiC optical receivers. AI agents, driven by Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), continuously analyze traffic conditions, apply adaptive rewards to improve decision-making, and dynamically reroute agents to balance traffic loads and avoid bottlenecks. Traffic states are encoded and processed through Q-learning algorithms, enabling intelligent phase activation and responsive control strategies. Simulation results confirm that the proposed system enables more balanced green time allocation, with reductions of up to 43% in vehicle-prioritized phases (e.g., Phase 1 at C1) to accommodate pedestrian flows. These adjustments lead to improved route planning, reduced halting times, and enhanced coordination between AGVs and pedestrian traffic across multiple intersections. Additionally, traffic flow responsiveness is preserved, with critical clearance phases maintaining stability or showing slight increases despite pedestrian prioritization. Simulation results confirm improved route planning, reduced halting times, and enhanced coordination between AGVs and pedestrian flows. The system also enables accurate indoor localization without relying on a Global Positioning System (GPS), supporting seamless movement and operational optimization. By combining VLC, adaptive AI models, and rerouting strategies, the proposed approach contributes to safer, more efficient, and human-centered airport mobility. Full article

This study addresses the critical gap in designing child-friendly school commuting routes in mountainous cities like Chongqing, where steep terrain and complex infrastructure pose unique challenges to children’s safety and accessibility. Combining Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) and the Kano model, we systematically evaluated 19 design elements across safety, interest, and convenience dimensions through comprehensive field research and surveys involving 611 participants. Our analysis identified emergency signage systems, street greening, and parent pick-up points as pivotal optimization factors, while revealing significant improvement needs for vehicle speed limits and anti-slip pavement. The findings demonstrate how context-specific, evidence-based design solutions can effectively enhance children’s commuting experiences in challenging urban environments, providing urban planners with a scientifically-grounded framework that adapts child-friendly principles to mountainous contexts. This research advances the field of child-friendly urban planning by bridging the current theoretical-practical divide and offering actionable strategies tailored to geographically constrained cities. The rapid growth of e-commerce has intensified the need for efficient and sustainable last-mile delivery solutions in urban environments. This paper explores the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) and artificial intelligence (AI) into a combined framework to enhance the environmental, operational, and economic performance of urban logistics. Through a comprehensive literature review, we examine current trends, technological developments, and implementation challenges at the intersection of smart mobility, green logistics, and digital transformation. We propose an operational framework that leverages AI for route optimization, fleet coordination, and energy management in EV-based delivery networks. This framework is validated through a real-world case study conducted in Lisbon, Portugal, where a logistics provider implemented a city consolidation center model supported by AI-driven optimization tools. Using key performance indicators—including delivery time, energy consumption, fleet utilization, customer satisfaction, and CO₂ emissions—we measure the pre- and post-AI deployment impacts. The results demonstrate significant improvements across all metrics, including a 15–20% reduction in delivery time, a 10–25% gain in energy efficiency, and up to a 40% decrease in emissions. The findings confirm that the synergy between EVs and AI provides a robust and scalable model for achieving sustainable last-mile logistics, supporting broader urban mobility and climate objectives. Cold chain logistics possesses unique characteristics, particularly the necessity to maintain low temperatures within containers throughout the distribution process. Real-world traffic conditions, such as congestion, significantly impact the efficiency of cold chain logistics and contribute to increased carbon emissions. To foster green and sustainable development in this sector, a carbon emission trading mechanism has been established, incentivizing companies to invest in energy conservation and emission reduction through economic transactions. This study introduces a multi-objective optimization model for route planning in port seafood logistics, integrating considerations of traffic congestion and zero-carbon transportation. To accurately reflect real-world traffic conditions, a time-dependent function is utilized to model traffic congestion within actual road networks. The road segments are divided, and the travel time for vehicles in each segment is computed. Additionally, the costs associated with the distribution process are analyzed, leading to the development of a multi-objective optimization model aimed at minimizing both distribution costs and zero-carbon transportation costs. The proposed model demonstrates significant economic savings and environmental advantages, providing a theoretical foundation for decision-making processes that support the green and sustainable development of port seafood logistics. As cities increasingly prioritize green and low-carbon transportation, the development of effective cycling infrastructure has become essential for alleviating traffic congestion and reducing environmental impacts. However, the service quality of bike lanes remains inadequate. To address this gap, this study proposes a multi-data-fusion framework for evaluating bike lane “cycling friendliness”, integrating subjective perceptions with objective metrics. The framework combines survey-based subjective data with digital measurements to enable rapid, large-scale assessments that align with user expectations. Tailored evaluation models are developed based on revealed preference (RP) survey analysis to account for variations among target user groups. Key factors such as road roughness, motor vehicle encroachment, cycling-friendly amenities, and roadside scenery are quantitatively assessed using vibration analysis and computer vision techniques. Validation results reveal a strong correlation between model predictions and subjective evaluations, demonstrating the framework’s reliability and effectiveness. This approach offers a scalable, data-driven tool for optimizing bike route selection and guiding infrastructure upgrades, thus advancing urban cycling transportation. Full article

This study develops a Green Vehicle Routing Problem (GVRP) model to address key logistics challenges, including time windows, simultaneous pickup and delivery, heterogeneous vehicle fleets, and multiple trip allocations. The model incorporates emissions-related costs, such as carbon taxes, to encourage sustainable supply chain operations. Emissions are calculated based on the total shipment weight and the travel distance of each vehicle. The objective is to minimize operational costs while balancing economic efficiency and environmental sustainability. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to optimize vehicle routing and allocation, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. A Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution case study in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, validates the model’s effectiveness. The results show significant cost savings compared to current route planning methods, alongside a slight increase in carbon. A sensitivity analysis was conducted by testing the model with varying numbers of stations, revealing its robustness and the impact of the station density on the solution quality. By integrating carbon taxes and detailed emission calculations into its objective function, the GVRP model offers a practical solution for real-world logistics challenges. This study provides valuable insights for achieving cost-effective operations while advancing green supply chain practices. Full article

One of the important problems of sustainable logistics is routing vehicles in a sustainable manner, the green vehicle routing problem, or vehicle routing problems which aim to reduce CO2 emissions. In the literature research, it was seen that these problems were solved with heuristic, metaheuristic, or hyper-heuristic methods and hybrid approaches since they are in the NP-hard class. This work presents a parallel multi-process genetic algorithm that incorporates problem-specific genetic operators to minimize CO2 emissions in the capacity-constrained vehicle routing problem. Unlike previous research, the algorithm combines parallel computing with tailored genetic operators in order to enhance the diversity of solutions and speed up convergence. Genetic algorithm models were developed to minimize total distance, CO2 emissions, and both objectives simultaneously. Two genetic algorithm models were developed to minimize total distance and CO2 emissions. Experimental results using the reference CVRP examples such as A-n32-k5 and B-n44-k7 show that the proposed approach reduces CO2 emissions by 1.2% more than hybrid artificial bee colony optimization, 1.3% more than ant colony optimization, and 4% more than the traditional genetic algorithm. Experimental results using benchmark CVRP instances demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms hybrid artificial bee colony optimization, ant colony optimization, and traditional genetic algorithms for most of the test cases. This is done by exploiting multi-core processors, and the parallel architecture has improved computational efficiency; the modules compare and update solutions against the global optimum. Results obtained show that prioritizing CO2 emissions as the only objective yields better results compared to multi-objective models. This study makes two significant contributions to the literature: (1) it introduces a novel parallel genetic algorithm framework optimized for CO2 emission reduction, and (2) it provides empirical evidence underscoring the advantages of emission-focused optimization in CVRP. This paper presents a case study on the Volume-based Pollution-Routing Problem with Time Windows (VPRPTW). The objective is to minimize CO2 emissions and improve customer satisfaction using a fleet of delivery vehicles. We propose a mathematical model and a probabilistic Tabu Search (TS) algorithm to solve the studied VPRPTW. The study revealed a decrease in daily fleet size from 16 to 12, indicating improved operational efficiency. In our study, we evaluate the impact of vehicle speed on fuel consumption and compare the results with a constant route speed to those obtained at varying speeds. Computational experiments reveal a significant difference of over 20% between fixed and variable speed assumptions. Additionally, we confirm that distance alone does not always correlate with energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This highlights the importance of considering variable speeds in routing problems to assist logistics companies, urban planners, and policymakers achieve more accurate and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. This paper proposes a Q-learning-driven butterfly optimization algorithm (QLBOA) by integrating the Q-learning mechanism of reinforcement learning into the butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA). In order to improve the overall optimization ability of the algorithm, enhance the optimization accuracy, and prevent the algorithm from falling into a local optimum, the Gaussian mutation mechanism with dynamic variance was introduced, and the migration mutation mechanism was also used to enhance the population diversity of the algorithm. Eighteen benchmark functions were used to compare the proposed method with five classical metaheuristic algorithms and three BOA variable optimization methods. The QLBOA was used to solve the green vehicle routing problem with time windows considering customer preferences. The influence of decision makers’ subjective preferences and weight factors on fuel consumption, carbon emissions, penalty cost, and total cost are analyzed. Compared with three classical optimization algorithms, the experimental results show that the proposed QLBOA has a generally superior performance. Full article

In urban logistics distribution, vehicle carbon emissions during the distribution process significantly contribute to environmental pollution. While developing green logistics is critical for the sustainable growth of the logistics industry, existing studies often overlook the potential benefits of depot sharing among enterprises. By enabling depots belonging to different enterprises to be shared, it would shorten the distance traveled by vehicles returning to depots and reduce carbon emissions. And it would also reduce the number of depots being built. Therefore, a green vehicle routing problem with depot sharing is presented in the paper. To solve this problem, an improved adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm is presented, in which the Split strategy and two new operators are proposed to enhance solution quality and computational efficiency. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted on instances of varying scales to evaluate this algorithm, and also demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrate that depot sharing significantly reduces carbon emissions, achieving an average optimization rate of 10.1% across all instances compared to returning to the original depot.
