Violence in Healthcare Workers Is Associated with Disordered Eating

Workplace violence (WV) is a ubiquitous risk in healthcare settings where it has been associated with physical and mental health problems. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the violence experienced by healthcare workers (HCWs) and the presence of eating disorders (EDs). During routine health surveillance, 1215 HCWs were questioned about their experience of WV and the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) was used to assess their eating behaviors. Sleep quality, stress, and the presence of common mental illnesses and metabolic disorders were also evaluated. HCWs who had experienced one or more assaults in the previous year had a significantly higher EDE score than their colleagues. In a multivariate model, WV doubled the risk of EDs (odds ratio 2.33, confidence intervals 95% 1.30; 4.18, p < 0.01). A very significant association was observed between common mental disorders and EDs (OR 1.13, CI 95% 1.04; 1.23, p < 0.01), while low sleep quality almost reached a significant level (OR 1.09, CI 95% 0.99; 1.20). The higher frequency of EDs among workers subjected to violence may result from maladaptive coping mechanisms used when stress and mental health problems caused by WV lead to compensatory overeating. However, reverse causation, where WV is induced by stigmatization, cannot be ruled out. Because of the considerable impact EDs have on physical and mental health, productivity, and patient care, healthcare organizations should adopt programs designed to prevent these disorders in HCWs. Background/Objectives: Neuromedin U (NMU) is a highly conserved gene encoding a neuropeptide involved in the regulation of feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. We aimed to analyze the association between NMU genetic and epigenetic variations and cardio-metabolic parameters in an Italian population to identify the role of these variants in cardio-metabolic risk. Methods: A total of 4028 subjects were randomly selected from the Moli-sani study cohort. NMU haplotypes were estimated using seven SNPs located in the gene body and in the promoter region; DNA methylation levels in the promoter region, previously associated with lipid-related variables in the same population, were also used. Results: Among the haplotypes inferred, the haplotype carrying the highest number of minor variants (frequency 16.6%), when compared with the most frequent haplotype, was positively associated with insulin levels, HOMA-IR, and diastolic blood pressure, and negatively with HDL-cholesterol. The multivariable analysis that considered methylation levels along with their interactions with SNPs showed that increased methylation levels in two close CpG sites were associated with higher levels of lipid-related variables. Conclusions: This study supports a role for NMU as a regulator of human metabolism. This finding suggests that NMU could be a potential target for preventive interventions against coronary and cerebrovascular diseases, and that NMU genetic and epigenetic variability may serve as a biomarker for cardio-metabolic risk. The P1104A variant in the TYK2 gene is recognized as the first common monogenic cause of tuberculosis, and recent studies also suggest a potential role in COVID-19 severity. However, its frequency and impact in admixed Latin American populations remain underexplored. Therefore, we investigated the P1104A/TYK2 variant in a cohort comprising 1826 RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients from Southern Brazil. Cases were stratified by severity into non-severe (n = 1190) and severe (n = 636). Three homozygous individuals were identified—one non-severe and two severe cases—although no statistically significant association with disease severity was observed. The frequency of the C allele in the COVID-19 cohort (2.85%) was significantly higher than in Brazilian population databases, including “DNA do Brasil” (1.81%, p < 0.001) and ABraOM (2.34%, p = 0.03), but lower than in the multi-ancestry gnomAD database (3.71%, p = 0.01), possibly reflecting ancestry bias. We also observed associations between COVID-19 severity and sex (p = 0.003), age (p < 0.001), obesity (p < 0.001), diabetes (p < 0.001), and hypertension (p < 0.001). Future studies in larger and more diverse cohorts are needed to characterize the prevalence of the variant in admixed populations and assess its contribution to COVID-19 susceptibility. Full article

Predictors of Proclivity, Enjoyment, and Acceptance of Non-Consensual Intimate-Image Distribution Among Greek University Students

Objectives: The present study investigated proclivity for non-consensual intimate-image distribution and its related dimensions—enjoyment and acceptance—in relation to key demographic and relational variables, including gender, age, sexual orientation, frequency of dating app use, and current romantic relationship status. Methods: A total of 1735 Greek university students (mean age = 22 years, standard deviation = 6.18; 35.2 percent male) participated in an anonymous online survey. Pearson correlation analyses and multiple linear regression models were conducted to examine the associations and predictive value of the demographic variables on proclivity, enjoyment, and acceptance of non-consensual intimate-image distribution. Results: Men, younger participants, and those who reported more frequent use of dating applications or websites demonstrated higher proclivity for non-consensual intimate-image distribution. Gender and frequency of dating app use were also significant predictors of enjoyment, with men and frequent users reporting greater enjoyment. Regarding acceptance, sexual orientation was the only significant predictor, with non-heterosexual individuals indicating higher levels of acceptance. Romantic relationship status did not significantly predict any of the three outcome variables. Conclusions: These findings highlight the significance of gender, age, sexual orientation, and dating app engagement in understanding the psychological and behavioral dimensions of non-consensual intimate-image distribution. The results support the need for targeted prevention efforts and further research into the contextual and psychosocial factors associated with this form of image-based abuse. Full article

As typical environmental hormones, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a global environmental health issue of high concern due to their property of interfering with the endocrine systems of organisms. As a commonly used substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol E (BPE) has been frequently detected in environmental matrices such as soil and water in recent years. Existing research has unveiled the developmental and reproductive toxicity of BPE; however, only one in vitro cellular experiment has preliminarily indicated potential neurotoxic risks, with its underlying mechanisms remaining largely unelucidated in the current literature. Potential toxic mechanisms and action targets of BPE were predicted using the zebrafish model via network toxicology and molecular docking, with RT-qPCRs being simultaneously applied to uncover neurotoxic effects and associated mechanisms of BPE. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the frequency of embryonic spontaneous movements was observed in zebrafish at exposure concentrations ≥ 0.01 mg/L. At 72 hpf and 144 hpf, the larval body length began to shorten significantly from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L, respectively (p < 0.01), accompanied by a reduced neuronal fluorescence intensity and a shortened neural axon length (p < 0.01). By 144 hpf, the motor behavior in zebrafish larvae was inhibited. Through network toxicology and molecular docking, HSP90AB1 was identified as the core target, with the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway determined to be the primary route through which BPE induces neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae. BPE induces neuronal apoptosis and disrupts neurodevelopment by inhibiting the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway, ultimately suppressing the larval motor behavior. To further validate the experimental outcomes, we measured the expression levels of genes associated with neurodevelopment (elavl3, mbp, gap43, syn2a), serotonergic synaptic signaling (5-ht1ar, 5-ht2ar), the cGMP/PKG pathway (nos3), and apoptosis (caspase-3, caspase-9). These results offer crucial theoretical underpinnings for evaluating the ecological risks of BPE and developing environmental management plans, as well as crucial evidence for a thorough comprehension of the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPE on neurodevelopment in zebrafish larvae. Local site conditions can significantly influence the amplitude, duration, and frequency content of seismic recordings, making the characterization of subsoil properties a critical component in seismic hazard assessment. However, despite extensive research, standardized methodologies for assessing site effects are still lacking. This study presents preliminary steps in the site characterization of a small area of Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy), with the aim of enhancing understanding of local lithology and seismic wave propagation. The analysis focuses on the broad-band seismic station CSTH, installed in 2021, and incorporates data from a temporary 2D array of five short-period sensors deployed around the station. These sensors recorded both ambient noise and seismic events associated with caldera dynamics. To improve the robustness of the characterization, data from two additional permanent broad-band stations (CPIS and CSOB) of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia—Osservatorio Vesuviano’s monitoring network, also located nearby a hydrothermal field, were included. Spectral analyses such as Power Spectral Density (PSD), Horizontal-to-Vertical (H/V) spectral ratios, and f-k array technique were performed to evaluate the frequency-dependent response of the site and to support the development of a comprehensive seismic site model. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate sociodemographic factors, features of the acute infection, and post-infection health status in survivors of COVID-19, assessing their association with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS). Methods: A multidisciplinary public clinic in Brazil assessed COVID-19 survivors between June 2020 and February 2022. Patients were classified as having PACS or subacute infection (SI). Data on the history of the acute infection, current symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory findings were collected and analyzed using multivariate models with PACS as the outcome. Results: Among the 113 participants, 63.71% were diagnosed with PACS at a median of 130 days (IQR: 53–196) following acute symptom onset. Admission to the intensive care unit was more frequent among individuals with PACS than those with SI (83.3% vs. 65.0% respectively; p = 0.037). Symptoms significantly more prevalent in the PACS group when compared to the SI cohort included hair loss (44.4% vs. 17.1% respectively; p = 0.004), lower limb paresthesia (34.7% vs. 9.8% respectively; p = 0.003), and slow thinking speed (28.2% vs. 0.0% respectively; p < 0.001). Logistic regression revealed that only the time interval between the onset of acute symptoms and the clinical evaluation was independently associated with a PACS diagnosis (β = 0.057; 95% CI: 1.03–1.08; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients with PACS had a higher frequency of intensive care unit admission compared to those with subacute infection. However, in the multivariate analysis, the severity of the acute infection did not predict the final diagnosis of PACS, which was associated only with the time elapsed since symptom onset. Background/Objectives: This study investigated the association between cochlear implant (CI) users’ assessed perception of musical sound quality and their subjective music perception and music-related quality of life (QoL). The aim was to provide a comprehensive evaluation by integrating a relatively objective Turkish Multiple Stimulus with Hidden Reference and Anchor (TR-MUSHRA) test and a subjective music questionnaire. Methods: Thirty CI users and thirty normal-hearing (NH) adults were assessed. Perception of sound quality was measured using the TR-MUSHRA test. Subjective assessments were conducted with the Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (MuRQoL). Results: TR-MUSHRA results showed that while NH participants rated all filtered stimuli as perceptually different from the original, CI users provided similar ratings for stimuli with adjacent high-pass filter settings, indicating less differentiation in perceived sound quality. On the MuRQoL, groups differed on the Frequency subscale but not the Importance subscale. Critically, no significant correlation was found between the TR-MUSHRA scores and the MuRQoL subscale scores in either group. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that TR-MUSHRA is an effective tool for assessing perceived sound quality relatively objectively, but there is no relationship between perceiving sound quality differences and measures of self-reported musical engagement and its importance. Subjective music experience may represent different domains beyond the perception of sound quality. Therefore, successful auditory rehabilitation requires personalized strategies that consider the multifaceted nature of music perception beyond simple perceptual judgments. Full article

With the electrification of generator sets, electric locomotives, new energy vehicles, and other industries, AC motors subject bearings to an electric field environment, leading to galvanic corrosion due to the use of variable frequency power supply drives. The phenomenon of bearing discharge breakdown in subway traction motors is a critical issue in understanding the relationship between shaft current strength and the extent of bearing damage. This paper analyzes the mechanism of impulse discharge that leads to galvanic corrosion damage in bearings at a microscopic level and conducts electric thermal coupling simulations of the traction motor bearing discharge breakdown process. It examines the temperature rise associated with lubricant film discharge breakdown during the dynamic operation of the bearing and investigates how breakdown channel parameters and operational conditions affect the temperature rise in the micro-region of bearing lubrication. Ultimately, the results of the electric thermal coupling simulation are validated through experimental tests. This study revealed that in an electric field environment, the load-bearing area of the outer ring experiences significantly more severe corrosion damage than the inner ring, whereas non-bearing areas remain unaffected by electrolytic corrosion. When the inner ring reaches a speed of 4500_rpm, the maximum widths of electrolytic corrosion pits for the outer and inner rings are measured at 89 um and 51 um, respectively. Additionally, the highest recorded temperatures for the breakdown channels in the outer and inner rings are 932 °C and 802 °C, respectively. Furthermore, as the inner ring speed increases, both the width of the electrolytic corrosion pits and the temperature of the breakdown channels rise. Specifically, at inner ring speeds of 2500_rpm, 3500_rpm, and 4500_rpm, the widths of the electrolytic pits in the outer ring raceway load zone were measured at 34 um, 56 um, and 89 um, respectively. The highest temperatures of the lubrication film breakdown channels were recorded as 612 °C, 788 °C, and 932 °C, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the protective and maintenance practices of traction motor bearings. Full article

Wool has distinctive biological, physical, and chemical properties that contribute to its value both for the sheep and in global fibre and textile markets. Its fibres are primarily composed of proteins, principally keratin and keratin-associated proteins (KAPs). To better comprehend the genes that underpin key wool traits, this study examined the keratin-associated protein 36-1 gene (KRTAP36-1) in Chinese Tan lambs. We identified three previously reported alleles of the gene (named A, B and C) that were present in the lambs studied, with genotype frequencies as follows: 2.0% (n = 5; AA), 6.9% (n = 17; AB), 13.8% (n = 34; AC), 8.9% (n = 22; BB), 33.4% (n = 82; BC) and 35.0% (n = 86; CC). The frequencies of the individual alleles in the Chinese Tan lambs were 12.4%, 29.1% and 58.5% for alleles A, B and C, respectively. The three alleles were in Hardy–Weinberg Equilibrium. In an association analysis, it was revealed that allele C was associated with variation in the mean fibre curvature of the fine wool of the Chinese Tan lambs, but this association was not observed in their heterotypic hair fibres. This finding suggests that KRTAP36-1 might be differentially expressed in the wool follicles that produce the two fibre types, and that along with other KRTAP genes, it may be involved in determining fibre curvature and the distinctive curly coat of the lambs. Background/Objectives: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (MPTC), a subset of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), is increasingly detected with advanced imaging. While most MPTCs are indolent, some exhibit aggressive behavior, complicating clinical management. The BRAF V600E mutation, common in PTC, is linked to aggressive features, and its allele frequency (AF) may serve as a biomarker for tumor aggressiveness. This study explored the association between BRAF V600E AF and aggressive histopathological features in MPTC. Methods: Data from 1 January 2016 to 23 December 2023 were retrieved from two McGill University teaching hospitals. Inclusion criteria comprised patients aged ≥ 18 years with thyroid nodules ≤ 1 cm, documented BRAF V600E mutation and AF results, and available surgical pathology reports. Tumor aggressiveness was defined as the presence of lymph node metastasis, aggressive histological subtype (tall cell, hobnail, columnar, solid/trabecular or diffuse sclerosing), extra thyroidal extension, or extensive lymphovascular extension. Associations were explored using t-tests. Results: Among 1564 records, 34 met the inclusion criteria and were included in analyses. The mean BRAF V600E AF was significantly higher in aggressive tumors (23.58) compared to non-aggressive tumors (13.73) (95% CI: −18.53 to −1.16, p = 0.03). Although not statistically significant, trends were observed for higher BRAF V600E AF in tumors with lymph node metastasis (mean AF: 25.4) compared to those without (mean AF: 16.67, p = 0.08). No significant difference was noted in BRAF V600E AF by histological subtype (mean AF for aggressive: 19.57; non-aggressive: 19.15, p = 0.94). Conclusions: Elevated BRAF V600E AF is associated with aggressive behavior in MPTC, highlighting its potential as a biomarker to inform treatment strategies. Larger studies are warranted to validate these findings and enhance clinical management of MPTC patients. Full article

Background: This study aimed to determine the association between PNPLA3 rs738409, rs2896019, and FTO rs9939609, rs17817449 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in Mongolian individuals. Methods: We conducted a case-control study, enrolling 100 MASLD patients and 50 subjects without MASLD. We used the PCR-RFLP technique on three genotype SNPs (rs738409, rs2896019 in PNPLA3, and rs9939609 in FTO). We analyzed liver function and lipid metabolism parameters in the peripheral blood of study participants. A p-value below 0.05 was considered a statistically significant result. Results: This study, which included 150 participants aged 23 to 75, had a mean age of 46.73 ± 11.45 years, with 40% of participants being male (60 individuals). We observed the rs738409 (G), rs2896019 (G), and rs9939609 (A) alleles at a statistically significantly enhanced frequency in the case group (32.5%, 33%, and 21%) compared to the control group (19%, 25%, and 19%), indicating an increased risk of MASLD. The FTO rs17817449 SNP did not show a significant difference between groups. PNPLA3 rs738409 GC/GG genotype (OR = 2.39, p = 0.019) and FTO rs9939609 AT/AA (OR = 2.55, p = 0.025) genotype showed a significant association with MASLD. In the evaluation of the FTO rs9939609, rs17817449, and PNPLA3 rs738409, rs2896019 single-nucleotide polymorphisms among the research individuals, 18.7% had no SNPs, 15.3% had one SNP, 29.3% had two SNPs, 25.3% had three SNPs, and 11.3% had four SNPs. The risk of MASLD increased significantly for individuals having four SNPs (OR = 4.23, p = 0.007). Conclusions: We found that PNPLA3 rs738409 GC/GG genotype and FTO rs9939609 AT/AA genotype are strongly associated with an increased risk of MASLD. Notably, individuals with a higher rate of SNP number, had a significantly higher risk of MASLD. Full article

Background/Objectives: Variations in hair length are observed in many dog breeds, as determined by the canine FGF5 gene. Long-haired Akitas, which are disqualified under breeding standards of Akitas, are sometimes born to short-haired parents and may have been subjected to treatments compromising animal welfare. Here, we aimed to identify an FGF5 variant associated with hair coat variations in Akitas in Japan, and to assess how welfare of this breed can be improved by carefully planned breeding. Methods: DNA samples were obtained from 60 Akitas in 2021 (modern Akitas) and 73 Akitas in the 1970s and the 1980s (classic Akitas). Sanger sequencing was performed on all exons and exon–intron junctions of the FGF5 gene to determine the causative variant of long hair in Akitas. A real-time PCR assay was developed to genotype FGF5:c.578C>T in modern and classic Akitas. Using 54 dogs from modern Akitas, scores (1 to 10) of hair length were compared among the three genotypes (C/C, C/T, and T/T). Results: Sanger sequencing revealed that the canine FGF5:c.578C>T variant was associated with long hair in Akitas in Japan. Genotyping revealed that the frequency of the mutant T allele was 0.350 in modern Akitas, which was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in classic Akitas (0.212). The three genotypes were not in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) in modern Akitas but were in HWE in classic Akitas. There were significant differences in hair length scores among the three genotypes (p < 0.001) and between the C/C and C/T genotypes (p < 0.005). There was no significant difference in the scores between male and female dogs. Conclusions: This study revealed that a causative variant that determines the long hair trait of Akitas in Japan was the FGF5:c.578C>T variant, which was inherited in an incompletely dominant manner. Akita dog breeders were more likely to select heterozygous C/T dogs based on the appearance of the hair coat for breeding dogs with an ideal fluffy hair coat. This might result in a high mutant T allele frequency and the production of undesired long-haired Akitas with T/T, which may create welfare problems. Genetic testing for this variant is necessary to improve welfare and conserve the Akita breed. Full article

Background/Objectives: The effect of diet on maternal and infant genetic levels has been reported in the literature. Diet-associated DNA damage, such as the presence of micronuclei (MN), may be related to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as cancer. There is particular concern regarding this damage during pregnancy, as it may affect the newborn (NB). Thus, this review aims to summarize the primary evidence of the impact of diet on the frequency of MN in the mother–infant population. Methods: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and ScienceDirect) were used to search for observational studies. Google Scholar and manual searching were required to perform the “gray literature” search. Results: The search strategy retrieved 1418 records. Of these, 13 were read in full and 5 were included in the review. Most studies were of the cohort type (n = 4) and were carried out in the European region. A total of 875 pregnant women and 238 newborns were evaluated. Despite insufficient evidence to confirm that diet changes the frequency of MN, the included studies found possible effects from the consumption of fried red meat and processed meats and the adequate consumption of vegetables and polyunsaturated fats. Conclusions: Future research is needed in order to understand the effects of diet on genetic stability and to obtain evidence to help plan public policies on food and nutrition or reinforce protective dietary patterns for this and future generations. Agrarian women are at the forefront of rural livelihoods increasingly affected by the frequency and severity of climate change impacts. However, their household livelihood resilience (HLR) remains limited due to gender-blind policies, scarce sex-disaggregated data, and inadequate consideration of gender-specific needs in resilience-building efforts. Grounded in participatory feminist research, this study employed a multi-method qualitative approach, including semi-structured interviews and oral history narratives, with 60 women in two climate-vulnerable provinces. Data were analyzed through thematic coding, CATWOE (Customers, Actors, Transformation, Worldview, Owners, Environmental Constraints) analysis, and descriptive statistics. The findings identify nine major climate-related events disrupting livelihoods and reveal a limited understanding of HLR as a long-term, transformative concept. Adaptation strategies remain short-term and focused on immediate survival. Barriers to HLR include financial constraints, limited access to agricultural resources and technology, and entrenched gender norms restricting women’s leadership and decision-making. While local governments, women’s associations, and community networks provide some support, gaps in accessibility and adequacy persist. Participants expressed the need for financial assistance, vocational training, agricultural technologies, and stronger peer networks. Strengthening HLR among agrarian women requires gender-sensitive policies, investment in local support systems, and community-led initiatives. Empowering agrarian women as agents of change is critical for fostering resilient rural livelihoods and achieving inclusive, sustainable development. Full article
