Tunisia faces significant challenges related to climate change, which deeply affect its natural and agricultural resources. This reality threatens not only food security but also the economic stability of rural communities and mainly rural women. This research aims to assess the impact of climate change on rural women in the agricultural development group in Sidi Bouzid, focusing on the strategies adopted and the support provided by various stakeholders to mitigate this impact. To achieve this, we developed a rigorous methodology that includes structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, and topological analysis through Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). The results revealed that rural women were categorized into three groups based on their vulnerability to climate change: severely vulnerable, vulnerable, and adaptive. The findings highlighted the significant impact of climate change on water resources, which has increased family tensions and reduced agricultural incomes, making daily life more challenging for rural women. Furthermore, a deeper analysis of interactions with external stakeholders emphasized the important role of civil society, public organizations, and research institutions in strengthening the climate resilience of rural women. Given these findings, strategic recommendations aim to enhance stakeholder coordination, expand partnerships, and improve access to essential technologies and resources for women in agricultural development groups. Despite the importance of financial literacy, particularly in sustaining and improving rural agriculture, it is documented in the literature that little is known about financial literacy, particularly in rural communities in developing countries. Responding to the calls for research to address this gap, the current study investigates how financial literacy relates to access to funding, innovative service adoption, and sustainable food production among agricultural food producers in Nigeria’s rural communities. A probability sampling technique was used to draw 460 samples from registered rural farmers in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchored Borrower’s Programme for food production in Edo State, Nigeria. Quantitative data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The hypotheses were tested using regression analysis, while descriptive statistics were deployed to analyse the demographic data of the respondents. The outcomes suggest that financial literacy has significant links with access to funding, innovative service adoption and sustainable food production among agricultural food producers in Nigerian rural communities. Based on the outcomes, it is concluded that financial literacy significantly influences sustainable food production in Nigerian rural communities. As such, there is a need for the Nigerian government and financial authorities to embark on a financial literacy drive to increase financial literacy, particularly in light of ever-evolving disruptive financial technologies. Biofilms cause a variety of problems, such as food spoilage, food poisoning, infection, tooth decay, periodontal disease, and metal corrosion, so knowledge on biofilm prevention and removal is important. A detailed observation of the three-dimensional structure of biofilms on the nanoscale is expected to provide insight into this. In this study, we report on the successful in situ nanoscale observations of a marine bacterial biofilm on glass in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) using both scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) over the same area. By observing the same area by SICM and CLSM, we were able to clarify the three-dimensional morphology of the biofilm, the arrangement of bacteria within the biofilm, and the difference in local ion conductivity within the biofilm simultaneously, which could not be achieved by observation using a microscope alone. Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth. is a species of annual plant that has been gaining importance in recent years. Initially, it was treated as an ornamental plant and valuable only to bees. Over the years, this species has become more widely known, and many more of its advantages have been discovered. The aim of this study was to learn about the contemporary economic importance of Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth. The extraordinary, rapid increase in the plant’s biomass means that it is valued as a fodder plant and at the same time is included in the group of leaders among catch crops. It is characterized by low requirements for soil quality. The main advantage of this plant is its high resistance to drought and frost. A great advantage of this plant is its high drought resistance. It is recommended for sowing both in monoculture and in mixtures with other species. In the light of current standards and assumptions, it fits perfectly into the framework of sustainable development. It is a valuable link in the biodiversity chain, as well as support for a number of ecosystem services such as CO2 sequestration, retention of nutrients in the soil or protection of its structure. Phacelia is seen as having great potential as a plant that provides food for a number of pollinators. The latest research also focuses on assessing the possibility of using it for energy purposes (biogas). Efforts are being made to introduce phacelia on a wider scale to eliminate crop monocultures and significantly strengthen biodiversity in a given area. Phacelia plays an important role in various agronomic systems and effectively supports the protection of the natural environment. The contribution of this species to the development of ecosystem services to date is undeniable. It should be assumed that this plant will continue to significantly support a number of activities for sustainable development. Full article

The yak (Bos grunniens) is a key species in high-altitude rangelands of Asia. Despite their ecological and economic importance, yak production faces persistent challenges, including low milk yields, vulnerability to climate changes, emerging diseases, and a lack of systematic breeding programs. This review presents the genomic, physiological, and environmental dimensions of yak biology and husbandry. Genes such as EPAS1, which encodes hypoxia-inducible transcription factors, underpin physiological adaptations, including enlarged cardiopulmonary structures, elevated erythrocyte concentrations, and specialized thermoregulatory mechanisms that enable their survival at elevations of 3000 m and above. Copy number variations (CNVs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) present promising markers for improving milk and meat production, disease resistance, and metabolic efficiency. F1 and F2 generations of yak–cattle hybrids show superior growth and milk yields, but reproductive barriers, such as natural mating or artificial insemination, and environmental factors limit the success of these hybrids beyond second generation. Infectious diseases, such as bovine viral diarrhea and antimicrobial-resistant and biofilm-forming Enterococcus and E. coli, pose risks to herd health and food safety. Rising ambient temperatures, declining forage biomass, and increased disease prevalence due to climate changes risk yak economic performance and welfare. Addressing these challenges by nutritional, environmental, and genetic interventions will safeguard yak pastoralism. This review describes the genes associated with different yak traits and provides an overview of the genetic adaptations of yaks (Bos grunniens) to environmental stresses at high altitudes and emphasizes the need for conservation and improvement strategies for sustainable husbandry of these yaks. Hernia is a physiological condition that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. Surgical treatment for hernias often involves the use of specialized meshes to support the abdominal wall. While this method is highly effective, it frequently leads to complications such as pain, infections, inflammation, adhesions, and even the need for revision surgeries. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hernia recurrence rates can reach up to 11%, surgical site infections occur in up to 21% of cases, and chronic pain incidence ranges from 0.3% to 68%. These statistics highlight the urgent need to improve mesh technologies to minimize such complications. The design and material composition of meshes are critical in reducing postoperative complications. Moreover, integrating drug-eluting properties into the meshes could address issues like infections and inflammation by enabling localized delivery of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents. Mesh design is equally important, with innovative structures like auxetic designs offering enhanced mechanical properties, flexibility, and tissue integration. These advanced designs can distribute stress more evenly, reduce fatigue, and improve performance in areas subjected to high pressures, such as during intense coughing, sneezing, or heavy lifting. Technological advancements, such as 3D printing, enable the precise fabrication of meshes with tailored designs and properties, providing new opportunities for innovation. By addressing these challenges, the development of next-generation mesh implants has the potential to reduce complications, improve patient outcomes, and significantly enhance quality of life for individuals undergoing hernia repair. The objective of this study was to develop a novel sauce formulation in which egg yolk was substituted with pea and soy proteins, in addition to the incorporation of tomato pomace as a functional ingredient. Nine experimental samples (E1–E3, S1–S3, and P1–P3) and three control samples (E0, S0, and P0) were prepared, corresponding to three protein sources (E: egg yolk, S: soy, P: pea), with increasing concentrations of tomato pomace (0, 2, 4, and 6%). The formulations were adjusted proportionally in terms of water and oil to maintain the desired consistency. The analyses performed included: physico-chemical analysis of the sauce (fat content, peroxide value, and CIE L* a* b* color determination), quality assessment using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR, rheological measurements, and microstructural evaluation. The sample designated P2 demonstrated a notable correlation with favourable parameters, exhibiting intense colouration, elevated protein content, and consistent rheological properties. However, at higher levels of tomato pomace (notably 6%), microstructural instability was observed, which may limit the formulation’s robustness over time. These findings demonstrate that tomato pomace can enhance the functional and structural characteristics of sauce, while also highlighting the importance of optimizing concentration levels to avoid negative impacts on emulsion stability. Overall, the results support the use of tomato pomace and plant proteins in the formulation of sustainable and innovative food products. Full article

Background/Objectives: As an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid, linoleic acid (LA) plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of cellular membranes, modulating inflammatory responses, and mediating intracellular signaling. This review explores the structure, properties, and nutritional significance of LA and its bioactive derivatives, with particular attention to sustainable production methods and their potential applications. Methods: A comprehensive review of the recent literature was conducted, emphasizing the use of green synthesis techniques, such as enzyme-catalyzed biocatalysis and microbiological transformations, in order to obtain LA-derived nutraceuticals. Analyses were conducted on the key aspects related to food industry applications, regulatory frameworks, and emerging market trends. Results: Through green synthesis strategies, LA derivatives with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties have been developed. There is potential for these compounds to be incorporated into health-oriented food products. In spite of this, challenges remain regarding their stability and bioavailability. Furthermore, there are inconsistencies in international regulatory standards which prevent these compounds from being widely adopted. Conclusions: The development of functional and sustainable food products based on linoleic acid derivatives obtained using ecological methods offers significant potential. Research is required to optimize production processes, enhance compound stability, and clinically validate health effects. The integration of the market and the safety of consumers will be supported by addressing regulatory harmonization. Full article

Medicinal plants have been used in traditional medicines all over the world to treat human diseases throughout human history. Many of the medicinal plants have frequently become food and nutrition plants. A more sophisticated investigation resulted in discovering numbers of biologically important secondary metabolites of plants. Pentacyclic triterpenoids represent an important group of the plant secondary metabolites that have emerged as having top biological importance. While the most widespread plant triterpenoids and a majority of their semisynthetic derivatives have been reviewed quite often, other plant pentacyclic triterpenoids and their derivatives have so far been less frequently studied. Therefore, attention has been focused on selected pentacyclic triterpenoids, namely on arjunolic acid, asiatic acid, α- and β-boswellic acids, corosolic acid, maslinic acid, morolic acid, moronic acid, and the friedelane triterpenoids, and on different derivatives of the selected triterpenoids in this review article. A literature search was made in the Web of Science for the given keywords, covering the required area of secondary plant metabolites and their semisynthetic derivatives starting in 2023 and ending in February 2025. The most recently published findings on the biological activity of the selected triterpenoids, and on the structures and the biological activity of their relevant derivatives have been summarized therein. Even if cytotoxicity of the compounds has mainly been reviewed, other biological effects are mentioned if they appeared in the original articles in connection with the selected triterpenoids and their derivatives, listed above. A comparison of the effects of the parent plant products and their derivatives has also been made. Full article

Type I collagen is a major protein in animals, and its hydrolyzed products, collagen peptides, have wide-ranging applications. This article reviews collagen peptides’ preparation methods, biological activities, and application progress in the fields of food, cosmetics, and medicine. By employing various extraction and hydrolysis methods, collagen peptides with different molecular weights can be obtained, and their biological activities are closely related to their molecular weight and amino acid sequence. Studies have revealed that collagen peptides possess a variety of biological activities, including antioxidant, hematopoietic promotion, osteogenic differentiation promotion, antihypertensive, and anti-diabetic effects. In the food industry, their antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties have opened new avenues for the development of healthy foods; in the cosmetics field, the moisturizing, anti-aging, and repair functions of collagen peptides are favored by consumers; in the medical field, collagen peptides are used in wound dressings, drug carriers, and tissue engineering scaffolds. Looking to the future, the development of green and efficient preparation technologies for collagen peptides and in-depth research into the relationship between their structure and function will be important research directions. The multifunctional properties of collagen peptides provide a broad prospect for their further application in the health industry. Full article

Azospirillum is a well-studied genus of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and one of the most extensively researched diazotrophs. This genus can colonize rhizosphere soil and enhance plant growth and productivity by supplying essential nutrients to the host. Azospirillum–plant interactions involve multiple mechanisms, including nitrogen fixation, the production of phytohormones (auxins, cytokinins, indole acetic acid (IAA), and gibberellins), plant growth regulators, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, and the synthesis of various bioactive molecules, such as flavonoids, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and catalase. Thus, Azospirillum is involved in plant growth and development. The genus Azospirillum also enhances membrane activity by modifying the composition of membrane phospholipids and fatty acids, thereby ensuring membrane fluidity under water deficiency. It promotes the development of adventitious root systems, increases mineral and water uptake, mitigates environmental stressors (both biotic and abiotic), and exhibits antipathogenic activity. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is the primary mechanism of Azospirillum, which is governed by structural nif genes present in all diazotrophic species. Globally, Azospirillum spp. are widely used as inoculants for commercial crop production. It is considered a non-pathogenic bacterium that can be utilized as a biofertilizer for a variety of crops, particularly cereals and grasses such as rice and wheat, which are economically significant for agriculture. Furthermore, Azospirillum spp. influence gene expression pathways in plants, enhancing their resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. Advances in genomics and transcriptomics have provided new insights into plant-microbe interactions. This review explored the molecular mechanisms underlying the role of Azospirillum spp. in plant growth. Additionally, BNF phytohormone synthesis, root architecture modification for nutrient uptake and stress tolerance, and immobilization for enhanced crop production are also important. A deeper understanding of the molecular basis of Azospirillum in biofertilizer and biostimulant development, as well as genetically engineered and immobilized strains for improved phosphate solubilization and nitrogen fixation, will contribute to sustainable agricultural practices and help to meet global food security demands. Quality and mechanical resilience are crucial for reducing losses in fruit production and for supporting food chains. Indeed, integrating empirical data with rheological models bridges gaps in fruit processing equipment design. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between the mechanical and physical properties of seven economically important fruits—nectarine, kiwi, cherry, apple, peach, pear, and apricot—to assess their mechanical behavior and post-harvest quality. Standardized compression, creep, and puncture tests were conducted to establish mechanical parameters, such as rupture force, elasticity, and deformation energy. Physical characteristics including size, weight, density, and moisture content were also measured. The results indicated significant differences among the various categories of fruits; apples and pears were most suitable for mechanical harvesting and long storage periods, whereas cherries and apricots were least resistant and susceptible to injury. Correlations were high among the physical measurements, tissue firmness, and viscoelastic properties, thereby confirming structural properties’ contribution in influencing fruit quality and handling efficiency. The originality of this research is in its holistic examination of physical and mechanical properties under standardized testing conditions, thus offering an integrated framework for enhancing post-harvest operations. Examining Food Sources and Their Interconnections over Time in Small Island Developing States: A Systematic Scoping Review

Background: Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face high rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and a key structural driver includes SIDS’ heavy reliance on imported food. Yet, our knowledge about food sources in SIDS is limited. Methods: We systematically searched 14 peer-reviewed databases and 17 grey literature repositories, identifying 56 articles and 96 documents concerning food sources in SIDS. Our study aimed to map these sources while considering broader societal, cultural, and environmental aspects. Results: We found high heterogeneity of food sources beyond store-bought foods, highlighting the complexity of food landscapes in this context. To explore these food sources and their interconnections, we developed a classification including Aid, Buy, Grow, Share, State and Wild food sources, and offered contextually-sensitive insights into their variety (types), extent (relevance), nature (characteristics) and changes over time. We developed an interactive open-access evidence map that outlined the identified interconnections between food sources following our proposed classification. There are numerous interrelations between food sources, showing that pathways from food sourcing to consumption can be unexpected and complex. Conclusions: In 2014, SIDS governments collectively committed to ending malnutrition by 2030. A deeper understanding of food sourcing is essential to achieve this goal. Full article

Ammonia, as a toxic and corrosive gas, is widely present in industrial emissions, agricultural activities, and disease biomarkers. Detecting ammonia is of vital importance to environmental safety and human health. Sensors based on MXene have become an effective means for detecting ammonia gas due to their unique hierarchical structure, adjustable surface chemical properties, and excellent electrical conductivity. This study reviews the latest progress in the use of MXene and its composites for the low-temperature detection of ammonia gas. The strategies for designing MXene composites, including heterojunction engineering, surface functionalization, and active sites, are introduced, and their roles in improving sensing performance are clarified. These methods have significantly improved the ability to detect ammonia, offering high selectivity, rapid responses, and ultra-low detection limits within the low-temperature range. Successful applications in fields such as industrial safety, food quality monitoring, medical diagnosis, and agricultural management have demonstrated the multi-functionality of this technology in complex scenarios. The challenges related to the material’s oxidation resistance, humidity interference, and cross-sensitivity are also discussed. This study aims to briefly describe the reasonable design based on MXene sensors, aiming to achieve real-time and energy-saving environmental and health monitoring networks in the future. Pain Perception and Dietary Impact in Fixed Orthodontic Appliances vs. Clear Aligners: An Observational Study

Background and Objectives: Orthodontic treatment, whether fixed or removable, offers several benefits, including improved aesthetics, enhanced oral function, and increased self-confidence. However, it may also cause discomfort and pain, particularly following adjustment visits. This study aimed to assess pain characteristics (latency and continuity), food impairment, weight loss, and analgesic use in relation to treatment duration and appliance type. Methods: This observational study included 160 orthodontic patients who completed a structured questionnaire comprising 13 single-choice items. The questionnaire assessed age, gender, residential environment, educational status, type and duration of orthodontic treatment, pain characteristics (duration, latency, continuity), food impairment, and analgesic use. Inclusion criteria specified patients with moderate anterior crowding undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment or treatment with clear aligners on both arches, for at least one month. All fixed appliance cases involved 0.022-inch-slot Roth prescription brackets. Results: Patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment reported a higher frequency of pain (91.4%), greater need for analgesics (95.2%), and more food impairment compared to those with clear aligners. Patients treated for less than 6 months more frequently reported pain lasting 1 week (57.1%), while those treated for 1–2 years more commonly reported pain lasting several days (43.8%). Conclusions: Fixed orthodontic appliances are associated with greater discomfort, longer pain latency, more frequent analgesic use, and higher dietary impact compared to clear aligners. These findings emphasize the importance of personalized patient counseling and proactive pain management to improve compliance, enhance quality of life, and support informed decision-making in orthodontic care.
