The primary aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive theoretical model for creating digital content that enhances speech formation in toddlers aged 1–3, based on children’s folklore. This model seeks to integrate pedagogical, psychological, and cultural elements to offer a balanced and age-appropriate digital learning experience for young children. The study employed a systematic literature review using Creswell’s seven-step process, which involved identifying relevant research, reviewing and analyzing 22 peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2023, and synthesizing their findings. VOSviewer version 1.6.18, a bibliometric visualization tool, was used to conduct a keyword co-occurrence analysis, identifying key concepts and trends in digital content creation for toddlers. The systematic review adhered to the PRISMA framework to ensure rigor in the selection and analysis of the included studies, which spanned fields such as education, psychology, and pediatric development. The study identified several key dimensions necessary for developing an effective theoretical model of digital content creation for toddlers: The content must be age-appropriate and consider the unique cognitive, linguistic, and developmental needs of toddlers. Children’s folklore plays a crucial role in language development, offering culturally rich and rhythmically engaging material for young learners. The model must address the balance between screen time and real-world interactions, ensuring that digital engagement does not replace essential real-life learning experiences. Ensuring the psychological and physiological safety of digital content is paramount, requiring the exclusion of inappropriate or harmful material and the inclusion of interactive, engaging content that supports speech development. The study concludes that a well-designed model for digital content creation, rooted in children’s folklore, can significantly enhance speech development in toddlers. Such a model must not only support language acquisition but also reflect cultural heritage, promote safe digital environments, and encourage a balance between digital and real-world interactions. By integrating the findings from various disciplines, this theoretical model provides a holistic framework that can guide the development of high-quality digital content aimed at supporting early childhood language development in the digital age. Folklore, as an expression of intangible cultural heritage, plays a key role in the transmission of collective memory, values, and cultural identity and has been widely recognized for its educational potential in early childhood. This study analyzes the perceptions of Early Childhood Education teachers in the province of León (Spain) regarding the pedagogical value of folklore and its use in classroom practice. A quantitative, cross-sectional, non-experimental design was employed using a validated questionnaire administered to a voluntary sample of 100 teachers from schools offering the second cycle of Early Childhood Education. The instrument assessed three dimensions: knowledge of folklore, perceived relevance of folk literature, and application in educational practice. The results indicate that teachers hold very positive attitudes toward folklore as a cultural and educational resource, particularly for children’s social, emotional, and cultural development. However, a clear gap emerges between this strong theoretical appreciation and its occasional classroom use. Significant differences were identified according to school environment, type of school, and teaching experience, indicating that contextual and professional factors influence folklore integration. Insufficient training and low self-confidence were identified as the main barriers. This study highlights the need to strengthen initial and in-service teacher education in cultural heritage and in the didactics of literature and music to promote a more meaningful and sustainable use of folklore in early childhood education. This article examines Romanian internet memes as cultural micro-narratives that encode social critique, identity negotiation, and emotional response through compressed, multimodal storytelling. Using a mixed-method approach, the study integrates qualitative narrative analysis with quantitative sentiment data drawn from the RoMEMESv2 corpus, comprising 983 Romanian-language memes. The analysis identifies recurrent narrative roles and plot structures adapted from Propp’s morphology and applied to digital contexts, revealing archetypal roles, such as the slacker hero, the bureaucratic villain, the domestic guardian, and the trickster. From a quantitative point of view, the corpus exhibits a dominant negative sentiment, particularly within political memes, which combine systemic critique with affective ambivalence. These findings distinguish Romanian memes from datasets in other languages, suggesting that negativity functions not as deviance, but as a culturally specific narrative and emotional resource. Multimodal analysis demonstrates how visual and textual elements operate through anchorage, intertextuality, and symbolic compression, so as to construct narrative messages within single frames. The study argues that Romanian memes function as digital folklore: they narrate social frustration and institutional distrust through irony, repetition, and archetypal condensation, offering insights into the emotional and narrative logic of post-communist digital culture. This article reexamines one of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov’s central tales, “The Clever Man and the Simple Man,” through three intertwined foundations that shaped its composition: the Hasidic valorization of the sincere simple person, the story of the Sockmaker in Shivhei ha-Besht, and the myth of Enoch the Shoemaker who became the angel Metatron. While previous scholarship has interpreted the tale primarily as an internal spiritual struggle between intellect and faith, this study argues that the deeper architecture of the story is rooted in these narrative and mythic traditions, which Rabbi Nachman reshapes in order to formulate a new ideal of simplicity. The article demonstrates that the Simple Man—far from the naïve or ignorant figure of folkloric tradition—embodies conscious simplicity, characterized by integrity, inner contentment, and an unmediated orientation toward reality. The analysis further shows how Rabbi Nachman develops the Hasidic tradition that transforms the Enoch myth from a model of mystical theurgy into a paradigm of sanctifying ordinary life through wholehearted presence and trust. In its final section, the article situates the tale within Rabbi Nachman’s broader struggle against the emerging modern spirit. It argues that the story offers a unique understanding of the dangers inherent in Enlightenment and modernity: the root of heresy lies not in intellectual inquiry or philosophical doubt, but in a modern way of life defined by restlessness, dissatisfaction, and a destabilized existential orientation. From this perspective, Rabbi Nachman presents the figure of the Simple Man as the path by which a person “walks with God,” and as a profound response to the spiritual challenges posed by modernity and secularization. Minthostachys verticillata (Griseb.) Epling, commonly known as peperina, is an aromatic species endemic to Argentina and traditionally used for gastrointestinal ailments. Despite its extensive folkloric use and inclusion in the Argentine Pharmacopoeia, its aqueous extract (the most commonly consumed preparation) has been described in terms of major phytochemical groups, and, currently, no studies have investigated its effects on key intestinal epithelial mechanisms. This plant is also employed in the production of beverages and herbal blends, and its massive consumption highlights the importance of its scientific study. Here, the aqueous extract of M. verticillata was characterized by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, leading to the identification of fourteen polyphenolic compounds. In intestinal cell models, the extract displayed high IC50 values, supporting its safety, and exhibited concentration-dependent bioactivity. In HT-29 cells, it modulated NF-κB activation induced by TNF-α and reduced LPS-stimulated IL-8 production. Pretreatment of Caco-2 monolayers prevented the decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance, increased FITC–dextran permeability, and nitric oxide production triggered by an inflammatory cocktail. Additionally, the extract inhibited HT-29 cell migration. These results demonstrate that M. verticillata aqueous extract exerts anti-inflammatory, barrier-protective, and anti-migratory effects in vitro, providing novel insights into how its polyphenolic composition may underlie these biological activities, supporting its traditional use and potential applications in intestinal health. Coleus strobilifer, the dried rhizome and root of Coleus strobilifer (Roxb.) A.J. Paton, is widely used for dampness-detoxification and detumescence in Chinese folklore. This study marks the first comprehensive investigation into the chemical composition of the whole herb of C. strobilifer, leading to the isolation and identification of two new abietane diterpenes, 10R-carnosuain (1) and 10R-coleon U-3-one (2), along with 34 known compounds (336) isolated from C. strobilifer for the first time. Their structures were unambiguously elucidated by analyses of NMR, HRESIMS, IR, CD, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, and comparison with the literature. All the isolated compounds were screened for their xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity. Among them, apigenin (8), luteolin (9), and esculetin (29) showed moderate XO inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 0.034 ± 0.004, 0.067 ± 0.005, and 0.284 ± 0.01 mM, respectively. Full article

Cassytha filiformis is a folkloric herbal medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study, an oxidized aporphine alkaloid, designated as Filiforidine (3,10,11-trimethoxy-1,2-methylenedioxy-7-oxoaporphine), was isolated from C. filiformis, and its structure was elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis. Owing to its novel structure and significant glucose consumption activity, the total synthesis of Filiforidine was achieved for the first time. The key steps featured an electrophilic addition reaction, involving the reduction of a nitro group to an amino group with lithium tetrahydroaluminum, and a copper bromide-catalyzed oxidative aromatization reaction as well as a photocyclization reaction. Several experimental steps were optimized. Furthermore, a complex post-treatment method was developed, which reduced the column chromatography separation steps. Specifically, 2-(4-methoxybenzo[d][1,3]dioxol -5-yl) ethan-1-amine is salted with dilute hydrochloric acid. Cytotoxicity assay and glucose oxidase assay showed that Filiforidine had significant glucose consumption-promoting effects on HL-7702 cells at 0.625 μM, 1.25 μM, and 2.5 μM but without cytotoxicity. Therefore, Filiforidine might be a promising drug candidate for the treatment of diabetes. Full article

Understanding the economic and psychological values that people assign to threatened species is crucial for their effective protection. The long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) is an endangered primate currently threatened by habitat destruction, removal from the wild for scientific, commercial, and recreational purposes, and culling due to conflicts with local communities. We conducted on-site interviews with Maguindanao residents in the Philippines (n = 500) to explore the conservation value of the long-tailed macaque and to assess how cognition, emotion, and folklore influence willingness to pay (WTP). Participants showed pro-conservation attitudes and positive emotions toward the long-tailed macaque, had substantial knowledge about their behavior and biology, but did not believe in folklore traditions. An average annual WTP of PHP 46.9 was estimated for macaque conservation, amounting to PHP 10.5 million annually, based on the number of households in the study area. Conservation attitudes, emotions, and biological knowledge about the long-tailed macaque were positively linked to WTP for its preservation. Conversely, dominionistic worldviews were negatively associated with WTP. Younger participants, females, and those with higher incomes demonstrated a higher WTP than older participants, males, and those with lower incomes. These findings can aid in designing and implementing outreach campaigns to raise funds and educate local communities, thereby further improving their attitudes toward this endangered primate. This article examines how K-Pop Demon Hunters (2025) portrays women’s agency and sorority while curating Korean cultural specificity within the context of global streaming. Adopting a Gender Media Studies approach, the study conducts a scene-indexed close reading of nine key sequences, applying a coding scheme (co-presence, agency, solidarity, body framing, choreography–camera, colour) and a cultural-codes matrix that classifies elements as retained, hybridised, or globalised. Findings show a consistent pattern: when two or more women protagonists appear together, agency and sorority co-occur; this is visible in the narrative arcs and through full-body staging, ensemble composition, and a persistent we/together rhetoric. Korean local specificity is divided by purpose: English-led song hooks extend transnational reach; retained social anchors (space, ritual, foodways, and folklore) preserve locality; and hybridised cues (stylised folklore; idol/traditional blends) manage cultural density without erasure. Authorship and industry context align with this encoding, combining a women centred creative core and Korean cast with on-screen emphasis on women’s friendship, repair, and shared agency. Two tensions remain: traditional attire in spectacle numbers, and the narrow body diversity in the idol-slim body ideal, inviting comparative and interpretative scrutiny. Overall, the case demonstrates how an animated musical can emphasise women’s empowerment and cultural specificity without reducing either to mere marketing tools. Full article

This comprehensive narrative review of bioactive plant compounds, pro-resolving anti-inflammatory lipids, and statins shows their potential in the inhibition of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), pain resolution, tissue repair, and disc regeneration. IVDD is a multifactorial disease involving a multitude of signaling pathways, leading to the loss of normal disc function. An influx of nociceptive mechanoreceptors generate low back pain (LBP). IL6 and IL8 levels are elevated in patients undergoing spinal fusion to alleviate LBP, indicating these pro-inflammatory mediators may be major contributors to the generation of LBP. Apoptosis of disc cells leads to the depletion of key extracellular matrix components that equip the disc with its weight-bearing properties. A biomechanically incompetent degenerated IVD stimulates nociceptor mechanoreceptor activity, generating pain. Myo-tendinous, vertebral body, muscle, and facet joint tissues also contain pain receptors. Disturbance of the normal architecture of the IVD also generates pain in these tissues. Plant compounds have been used in folkloric medicine for centuries. This review attempts to provide a scientific basis for their purported health benefits; however, further studies are still required to substantiate this. Until this evidence is available, it would be prudent to be cautious in the use of such compounds. A diverse range of plant compounds (flavonoids, terpenoids, glycosides, alkaloids, and polyphenolics) inhibit inflammation and apoptosis, reduce spinal pain, and stimulate tissue repair by targeting cell signaling pathways in IVDD. Pro-resolving lipid mediators (lipoxin A4, resolvin D1, protectins, and maresins) also reduce inflammation, maintaining disc health and function. Cholesterol lowering statins disrupt phosphorylation in cell signaling pathways inhibiting IVDD, promoting tissue repair and regeneration. Full article

This study examines the figure of the baksı as a living reflection of ancient Turkic belief systems in contemporary Kazakh culture. The baksı, whose earliest attestations in Old Uyghur Turkic derive from the Chinese po-shih (“scholar, teacher”), historically denoted a wide range of roles, including religious guide, scholar, scribe, healer, bard, and shaman. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates philological, lexicographic, folkloric, and ethnographic perspectives, the research traces the semantic development of the term across Turkic and Mongolic traditions, its uses in historical texts, and its representations in Kazakh oral literature such as proverbs, idioms, epics, and fairy tales. The findings show that while the baksı has been idealised as a healer, sage, and spiritual mediator, it has also been depicted with suspicion as a deceiver or figure associated with jinn, particularly in the post-Islamic period. Ethnographic insights further reveal that becoming a baksı involves a sacred calling, initiation rituals, and distinctive clothing and performance practices, situating the figure at the intersection of religion, medicine, and art. The study concludes that the baksı is not only a historical heritage but also a dynamic cultural institution, mediating between past and present, nature and society, and continuing to shape Kazakh identity today. In Africa, the folkloric practices involving plant-based remedies play a crucial role in livestock farming, often attributed to the limited access to modern veterinary services. The use of Acacia species (including those reclassified as Vachellia species) in ethnoveterinary medicine has garnered increasing interest due to their high protein content and medicinal (including anti-parasitic) properties, offering a sustainable source of fodder particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. However, scientific assessment of their efficacy and safety remains limited. This systematic review examines the ethnoveterinary uses, biological efficacy and safety of Acacia species across Africa. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus, yielding 519 relevant studies published between 2001 and 2024. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 43 eligible studies were analyzed based on their relevance, geographical location and livestock disease applications. Plants of the World online database was used to validate the names of the species and authority. Ethiopia had the highest usage of Acacia species (25%), then Nigeria (20%) followed by both South Africa (15%) and Namibia (15%). Vachellia nilotica (Acacia nilotica) was the most frequently cited species (26.3%), followed by Vachellia karroo (Acacia karroo) (15.8%). Ethnobotanical records indicate that the different Acacia species have been traditionally used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, wound infections and complications such as retained placenta. Pharmacological studies corroborate the therapeutic benefits of Acacia species with evidence of their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anthelmintic effects, though some toxicity concerns exist at high dosages. The systematic review revealed the efficacy and safety (to some extent) of Acacia species in livestock disease management, emphasizing their potential integration into veterinary medicine. However, the dearth of in vivo studies underscores the need for pre-clinical and clinical trials to establish safe and effective dosages for use in livestock. Full article

Amazon River dolphins often form multi-species aggregations at water confluences. This study used a multi-year data set to examine dolphins, fish, and geomorphology at dolphin aggregations. Methods included dolphin transect surveys, dolphin point counts, net and line fish captures, side-scan sonar, and eDNA analyses at five dolphin aggregations and two control sites. Amazon River dolphins (Inia geoffrensis and Sotalia fluviatlis) are typically found at aggregation sites that occur at water confluences that have greater dolphin numbers than control sites. The confluences had riverbed depressions averaging six metres in depth where fish were concentrated. Pink river dolphins preferred to form aggregations in flooded forest tributaries and large rivers, while grey river dolphins preferred the larger rivers. There were eighty-nine fish species at the confluences within the size of fish consumed by dolphins, and a higher abundance of fish occurred in and around the aggregation sites compared to control sites. The number of dolphins present at the aggregation sites correlated with fish abundance. Dolphin life history, such as fishing, resting, raising calves, and social interactions, occur at the aggregation sites. The aggregation sites are important conservation areas of the endangered pink and grey river dolphins, and through their folklore, Indigenous people living at confluence sites assist in the conservation of the aggregations and have lived with dolphins at confluences for thousands of years, contributing to their survival. The aim of this study is to identify the textile materials used to make Bulgarian folk costumes and to support the process of conservation and restoration of ethnographic objects. In the 18th and 19th centuries, folk costumes were made almost exclusively of natural materials, while in the first half and middle of the 20th century, they included contemporary synthetic and regenerated cellulose materials, as well as blends of these materials with natural fibers. A series of historical textiles and contemporary industrial fabrics were studied using a variety of analytical approaches, including micro-chemical staining and solubility tests, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. IR measurements were carried out in attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and external reflectance (ER) modes using a portable IR spectrometer, which enabled non-invasive analysis. The analysis revealed that the composition of the industrial fabrics and historical textiles encompassed synthetic fibers, such as polyester and polyamide, while others were made of regenerated cellulose fibers like viscose. Additionally, some textiles had a mixed composition of cotton and polyester or silk and viscose. The combined analytical approach provided reliable identification of both the synthetic and natural textile materials. Full article

Oxidative stress is a biological imbalance that contributes to cellular damage and is a major driver of aging and age-related disorders, prompting the search for natural antioxidant agents. Our study is a phytochemical, electrochemical, and biological characterization of the antioxidant potential of aqueous extracts from aerial parts of A. occidentale—leaves, bark, fruit, and cashew nuts—traditionally used in folklore medicine. Extracts were analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy, GC × GC-TOFMS, polyphenol quantification, and antioxidant capacity assays (ABTS, FRAP, DPPH). Biological activity was tested in different mice and human cell lines (SH-SY5Y, MEF, ARPE-19, and HLECs). Aqueous extracts from the leaves and bark of A. occidentale exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to those from the fruit and cashew nut. These extracts showed elevated polyphenol content and strong performance in antioxidant capacity assays. In vitro, leaf and bark extracts enhanced cell viability under H2O2-induced oxidative stress, preserved mitochondrial membrane potential, and upregulated cytoprotective genes (HMOX1, NQO1, GCLC, and GCLM) in multiple cell lines. In contrast, fruit and nut extracts showed minimal antioxidant activity and no significant gene modulation. Our findings underscore the therapeutic potential of A. occidentale leaf and bark extracts as effective natural antioxidants and support their further development as candidates for phytotherapeutic interventions.
