Assessment of Long-Term Knowledge Retention in Children with Type 1 Diabetes and Their Families: A Pilot Study

Background: The education process for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) patients and their families, primarily led by diabetes specialist nurses, is essential for gaining knowledge about the disease and its management. However, few assessment tools have been employed to evaluate long-term knowledge retention among T1D patients years after diagnosis. Methods: We developed a 20-question test to assess the knowledge of patients and their families at the conclusion of the initial education process and again 6–12 months later. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Statistical analyses included comparisons between the first and second test results, as well as evaluation of potential contributing factors. The internal consistency and construct validity of the questionnaire were evaluated. Results: Forty-four patients completed both assessments, with a median interval of 11.5 months between them. The average score on the first test was 88.6, which declined to 82.7 on the second assessment (p < 0.001). In univariate analysis, factors positively associated with higher scores included Jewish ethnicity, lower HbA1c levels, and shorter hospitalization duration. Multivariate analysis revealed that parents had lower odds of experiencing a significant score decline compared to patients. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.69, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified eight components accounting for 67.1% of the total variance. Conclusions: Healthcare providers should consider offering re-education to patients and their families approximately one year after diagnosis, with particular attention to high-risk populations during the initial education phase. Further studies are needed to examine this tool’s performance in larger cohorts. Full article

Background and Objectives: Handgrip strength represents a critical indicator of physical fitness and nutritional status in adolescents, yet population-specific reference values remain limited in developing countries. Understanding age- and sex-specific variations is crucial for accurate clinical assessment and effective health monitoring. The objective of this study was to establish comprehensive reference values for handgrip strength in healthy Tunisian adolescents aged 13–19 years and examine sex and age group differences in these measures. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2024 and June 2025, involving a sample of 950 participants (482 males, 468 females) aged 13–19 years from northwest Tunisia. Handgrip strength was measured using standardized dynamometry protocols for both hands. Anthropometric measurements included height, weight, and body mass index. Percentile curves were generated using the LMS method, and correlations between handgrip strength and anthropometric variables were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Males demonstrated significantly higher handgrip strength than females from age 13 onward (13 years: p = 0.021; 14–19 years: p ≤ 0.001). Effect sizes for sex differences were consistently large across age groups (Cohen’s d range: 0.53–2.09 for the dominant hand). Mean dominant handgrip strength ranged from 25.60 ± 7.73 kg to 47.60 ± 12.45 kg in males and 21.90 ± 6.13 kg to 28.40 ± 4.74 kg in females across age groups. After adjusting for body mass, sex differences remained significant between groups (13 years: p = 0.014; d= 1.5; 14–19 years: p ≤ 0.001; d: 1.71–3.12). Strong positive correlations emerged between handgrip strength and height (males: r = 0.748, females: r = 0.601), body mass (males: r = 0.659, females: r = 0.601), and body mass index (BMI) (males: r = 0.391, females: r = 0.461). Body mass and height emerged as the strongest predictors of handgrip strength in both sexes, while BMI showed a smaller but still significant contribution. Conclusions: This study provides the first comprehensive age- and sex-specific reference values for handgrip strength in Tunisian adolescents. Healthcare providers can utilize these percentile charts for the clinical assessment and identification of musculoskeletal fitness deficits. The results suggest its use in educational and clinical contexts. Full article

Background/Objectives: Medical and nursing students, as future healthcare professionals, influence public trust and vaccine acceptance. Knowledge gaps or misconceptions regarding immunization may undermine their confidence and effectiveness in addressing vaccine hesitancy. This study explores perceptions and attitudes toward childhood vaccination among Bulgarian healthcare students and factors shaping these outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2024, using an online self-administered questionnaire completed by 374 medical and nursing students. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze vaccine-related responses, comparing attitudes between healthcare programs and education years. Binomial logistic regression was applied to identify predictors of support for mandatory vaccination, first considering demographic and academic variables, and then adding students’ beliefs and common misconceptions. Results: Medical students showed more positive attitudes toward vaccination than nursing students, with 96.8% of medical students versus 89.4% of nursing students believing vaccines are effective (p = 0.005). Students in advanced years demonstrated stronger belief in vaccine effectiveness (p = 0.038). Additionally, misbeliefs about the measles vaccine causing autism decreased significantly, with most students in higher years rejecting this misconception (p = 0.009). Logistic regression revealed that belief in following the vaccine schedule (OR = 22.71; p < 0.001) and confidence in vaccine effectiveness (OR = 10.20; p < 0.001) were the strongest predictors of support for mandatory vaccination, with attitudinal factors explaining over half of the variance. Conclusions: Healthcare students’ attitudes about vaccination influence public health outcomes, as their perspectives reflect experience and beliefs. Targeted vaccine education helps address misconceptions and improve vaccination rates. Full article

Introduction: Dental caries and molar–incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) are prevalent conditions affecting children’s oral health, with functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial implications. In Spain, previous studies have highlighted geographic and sociodemographic disparities in their distribution, particularly among rural and migrant populations. Objective: To characterise oral health status, in terms of caries and MIH, among 6–7-year-old children from the towns of Palos de la Frontera, Mazagón, and San Bartolomé. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 229 children recruited from public primary schools. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, and behavioural data were collected through clinical examination and interview. Statistical analysis included univariate and multivariate logistic regression. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Huelva. Results: The prevalence of caries (DMFT ≥ 1) was 53.3%, with mean DMFT and dft indices of 1.78 and 0.31, respectively. MIH affected 32.8% of the cohort, with a predominance in the first permanent molars (teeth 36 and 26). Multivariate analysis identified independent predictors of caries: African (OR = 7.47; 95% CI: 2.84–23.8) and European (OR = 4.56; 95% CI: 1.26–22.3) parental origin, poor oral hygiene (OR = 3.07; 95% CI: 1.60–6.03), and the presence of MIH (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.64–6.42). The municipality of San Bartolomé was associated with a higher risk of MIH (OR = 2.90; 95% CI: 1.21–7.45). Conclusions: The high prevalence of caries and MIH in the Condado-Campiña district, exceeding national averages, reflects oral health inequities linked to social determinants (migrant origin, locality) and clinical factors (MIH, oral hygiene). Targeted preventive interventions are urgently needed in high-risk populations, including culturally tailored education and policies ensuring equitable access to dental care services. Full article

This paper examines the importance of ‘education outside the classroom’ (EOtC) in an Australian secondary school. The primary aim was to develop a sense of belonging, build resilience, and enhance wellbeing in female students. This study investigated two cohorts of Year 9 students (aged 14–15 yrs) who participated in a four-week residential EOtC pilot program. The first cohort (Wave 1; N = 58) undertook the program alongside (N = 39) boys. The second cohort was single-sex girls (Wave 2; N = 28). A mixed-methods research design was implemented to inform experiences of students, parents, and staff and to triangulate inferences drawn from the data. Quantitative data was gained from pre- and post-program surveys with students and parents, whilst qualitative data was gathered from student focus groups, staff, and parents through semi-structured interviews to assess more nuanced impacts. School belonging was measured using the PISA six-item scale. Academic buoyancy was quantified using the four-item Academic Buoyancy Scale. Self-efficacy, peer relations, and resilience were evaluated by employing the 34-item Adolescent Girls’ Resilience Scale. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ sense of belonging, including higher levels of school belonging than reported Australia-wide averages for 15-year-olds. Despite students’ mean academic buoyancy scores being more than a point lower than reported baseline scores for Australian high school students, it was promising to see a modest increase following the EOtC program. In conclusion, EOtC is a potent vehicle for developing a sense of belonging, enhancing resilience, and equipping students to deal with academic challenges. Full article

Background: Adolescents’ subjective well-being (SWB) is a key indicator of quality of life. While its development during schooling has been widely studied, few studies have examined changes in SWB after leaving school due to the need for longitudinal data. This study investigates changes in SWB among adolescents in Germany over the two years before and after leaving school, focusing on school type, socioeconomic position, gender, and family structure. Methods: We use data from the ninth-grade cohort of the German National Educational Panel Study, first surveyed in 2010 and followed annually. Growth modeling (specifically, a multilevel discontinuity model) is applied to analyze SWB trajectories and potential moderation by background characteristics. The final sample includes 19,767 observations from 6599 individuals. Results: SWB increases notably after leaving school and remains stable before and after the transition. The increase is smaller for adolescents completing higher secondary education, living in nuclear families, or identifying as male. These groups report higher SWB prior to the transition, so post-school changes reduce group differences. Conclusion: The findings suggest that schools may lack adequate resources to support adolescents in mastering key developmental challenges. While school is a critical environment, it may also impose pressures that are associated with lower well-being. Full article

This study examines the implementation of problem-based learning in the teaching of physics within the context of technical–professional higher education in Chile. The research aimed to evaluate meaningful learning, competency development, and student satisfaction. The study involved 122 first-year students enrolled in technical programmes related to the field of mechanics. The findings revealed significant improvements in both conceptual and propositional learning, as well as in the development of technical competencies such as problem-solving, information selection, and teamwork. Additionally, high levels of student satisfaction were observed, indicating that problem-based learning not only enhances learning but also fosters greater engagement and motivation among students. These results highlight the potential of problem-based learning to transform the teaching of physics in technical–professional higher education settings, aligning academic content with practical applications and providing students with relevant and high-quality education. The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) has been implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression. Our aim in this study was to assess the seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG antibodies as well as potential risk factors associated with seropositivity in patients with depression compared to healthy blood donors. This seroepidemiological study included 230 participants from Western Romania, divided equally into two groups: 115 patients diagnosed with depressive disorders which represented the study group and 115 age and gender-matched healthy blood donors, representing the control group. A structured questionnaire was used to assess risk factors potentially linked to T. gondii infection. The T. gondii IgG antibodies overall seroprevalence was significantly higher in the depression group (70.43%) compared to the control group (45.22%) (OR = 2.89; 95% CI: 1.68–4.97; p < 0.001). Higher seropositivity was noted in patients aged 50–59, 60+ years and in females. Patients with lower educational attainment showed significantly increased odds of T. gondii seropositivity (72.29% vs. 44.3%, OR = 3.28; 95% CI: 1.71–6.31; p < 0.001) compared with the control group. Stratification by ICD-10 diagnostic subtypes revealed significantly higher seropositivity in all categories, with the strongest association in patients with recurrent severe depressive episodes without psychotic symptoms (F33.2) (81.25%, OR = 3.5; 95% CI: 1.51–8.13; p = 0.004). These findings suggest a possible link between T. gondii infection and depression, particularly in relation to disease severity and sociodemographic factors. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate T. gondii seroprevalence and associated risk factors in Romanian patients with depression, providing a foundation for future longitudinal and preventive research. Acceptability of a Colorectal Cancer-Preventive Diet Promoting Red Meat Reduction and Increased Fiber and Micronutrient Intake: A Cross-Sectional Study in Romanian Adults

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with rising incidence in younger adults. Unhealthy diets high in red and processed meat and low in fiber are key modifiable risk factors, highlighting the need for preventive nutritional strategies targeting CRC through dietary interventions. Methods: A one-day sample diet for colorectal cancer prevention, consisting of fiber-rich meals excluding red meat and incorporating whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lean protein alternatives (such as fish and poultry), was developed. Its acceptability was assessed in a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire among healthy Romanian adults aged 18–50, with a total of 395 included participants. Results: Of the 395 respondents meeting the inclusion criteria (aged 18–50, no cancer or chronic gastrointestinal disorders), 63.5% were females, predominantly urban (90.1%), and highly educated. Mean age was 32.4 years; mean BMI was 25.07 kg/m2. The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was rated as “quite attractive” and “very attractive” by 74.9% of participants. All meals received high ratings, with dinner and the first snack being most favored. Most respondents (77.2%) found the diet satisfying and the satiety level and energy adequate, and 90.4% were willing to adopt it at least a few times per week. Financial accessibility was affirmed by 77.2% of the respondents. However, 61.8% reported difficulty eliminating red meat consumption. Female participants rated the diet significantly more attractive than males did (p = 0.041). Willingness to adopt the diet strongly correlated with higher acceptability (p < 0.0001), while BMI and education level showed no significant effect. Conclusions: The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was well accepted by Romanian adults aged 18–50, with higher receptivity among women and those with higher education; willingness to adopt the diet at least a few days per week was high, especially among those psychologically ready for dietary change, while key barriers included red meat reduction and perceived cost, underscoring the need for gender-sensitive, culturally adapted interventions and further research on long-term adherence and clinical impact. Background: Prematurely born newborns with low birth weight constitute a group of patients who require special care from the first days of life. Prematurity and low birth weight affect about 13.4 million infants. Risk factors include placental disorders but also factors related to the mother, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, drug use, malnutrition, or certain diseases. It is imperative to educate women of reproductive age (15–49) about the basic factors influencing embryonic development, such as oral health, diet, medicine intake, and harmful habits. Even though most women are aware of the negative impact of harmful habits on the fetus, still too little attention is paid to oral health in pregnant women. Poor oral health may influence the well-being of the future mother, as well as of the child. Therefore, women of reproductive age and those who are pregnant must have adequate knowledge on this subject. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of Polish women of reproductive age (15–49) regarding oral health during pregnancy, including the impact of dental treatment, oral hygiene, and maternal oral conditions on pregnancy outcomes and the health of the newborn. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 508 women, in the reproductive age, whose age ranged from 18 to 49 years old. The surveys were conducted from April 2020 to November 2020. The questionnaire was originally developed based on the available literature and consisted of seven sections: basic information, general health and habits, pregnancy status and dental care, knowledge of treatment options during pregnancy, oral health status and its association with the risk of preterm birth, prematurity and the child’s oral health, and breastfeeding and oral development. Results: After excluding incomplete questionnaires, a total of 499 questionnaires were included in the analysis. Women participating in the study had a fairly good understanding of the impact of oral health on the fetus and the role of breastfeeding in the development of the stomatognathic system (from 50% to 70% correct answers). However, even though most respondents had completed higher education (344/68.94%), their knowledge of oral health, preterm birth, and low birth weight was very limited (including the impact of inflammation on the intrauterine development of the child or bacteria and transfer across the placenta). In these sections, the percentage of correct answers ranged from less than 20% to 50%. When analyzing knowledge by age, education, number of births, and place of residence, the highest levels of knowledge were observed among respondents with higher education, particularly those aged 27–32. Conclusions: Respondents had a fairly good understanding of the general impact of oral health during pregnancy and recognition of the importance of breastfeeding for infants. However, their knowledge about the impact of bacteria and inflammation in the mother’s oral cavity on prematurity and low birth weight was limited. Therefore, educating women of reproductive age and pregnant women on this topic is essential, as it may help reduce the adverse consequences of prematurity. Full article

Effective resource planning in higher education requires anticipating student demand for courses, especially when dealing with elective programs. Monitoring student preference is a recurring topic in the literature; however, to the authors’ knowledge, no simple methods for estimating student preferences when choosing courses in higher education have been proposed. This study develops and explores the use of a simple questionnaire to capture patterns in student course preferences within a university context. The research is developed in the context of the nine Cross-Over modules offered as part of the curriculum of the master’s programs (MSc) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). No prior registration is required far in advance for these courses, making an accurate estimation of student numbers critical for the planning and allocation of educational resources. The developed questionnaire is applied three times in two different academic years to the students’ choice of Cross-Over modules. The questionnaire was shared in 2021, with 225 responses out of 339 students, in 2022, with 159 responses out of 365 students, and in 2024, with 94 responses out of 272 students. Student enrollment in the academic year 2023/2024 is used to assess the performance of the questionnaire. The questionnaire is able to capture general preferences of the students, providing fair estimates of the number of students per course; larger differences are observed in courses with a lower number of students. In addition, some patterns were identified in student preferences: there is a relationship between the first and second choices, and students usually choose modules closer to their own disciplines. The developed questionnaire provides with a reasonable first estimation of the expected number of students in courses, allowing for better planning and allocation of educational resources beforehand. High Use of Dietary Supplements and Low Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Among Italian Adolescents: Results from the EduALI Project

Objective: Eating habits established during adolescence play a crucial role in shaping both current and future health status. However, adolescents today appear to be increasingly adopting poorer dietary and lifestyle habits. This study aims to investigate eating behaviors and supplement use among adolescent students who participated in the EduALI nutrition education project. Methods: The project included first-year students from six sports-oriented scientific high schools in Florence. The students participated in six nutrition sessions, completing the International Physical Activity Questionnaire to assess physical activity performance, a questionnaire on dietary supplement use, and, to assess eating habits a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), as well as the Medi-Lite questionnaire to specifically assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD). The data from the FFQ were compared with national dietary guidelines. Results: The study sample consisted of 83 students (69.9% male; average age: 13.8 ± 0.4 y). The results showed that 61.4% of participants had used supplements in the past year, most commonly mineral salts (56.6%) and vitamins (54.2%), followed by botanical products (22%), sports drinks (16%), proteins/amino acids (8%), and creatine (2%). Alarmingly, 27.7% used supplements without medical supervision. Students involved in individual sports had higher supplement consumption than those in team sports, especially creatine use. Eating habits revealed poor adherence to both the MD and Italian dietary guidelines, with deficiencies in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish, and legumes, and excessive intake of cheese, meat, especially red and processed meats. Conclusions: A high prevalence of supplement use among adolescents was observed, along with poor adherence to dietary guidelines and MD. These findings underscore the need for targeted, school- and sport-based interventions to enhance adolescents’ nutritional awareness and responsible supplement use. Full article

Background/Objectives: The goal of educators is to leave no learner behind. Ultrasounds require dexterity and 3D image interpretation. They are technologically complex, and current medical residency programs lack a reliable means of assessing this ability among their trainees. This prompts consideration as to whether background characteristics or certain pre-existing skills can serve as indicators of learning aptitude for ultrasounds. The objective of this study was to determine whether these characteristics and skills are indicative of learning aptitude for ultrasounds. Methods: This prospective study was conducted with third-year medical students rotating in emergency medicine at the New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, USA. First, students were given a pre-test survey to assess their background characteristics. Subsequently, a psychomotor task (Purdue Pegboard) and visual–spatial task (Revised Purdue Spatial Visualization Tests) were administered to the students. Lastly, an ultrasound task was given to identify the subxiphoid cardiac view. A rubric assessed ability, and proficiency was determined as a 75% or higher score in the ultrasound task. Results: In total, 97 students were tested. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to ascertain if any background characteristics from the pre-test survey was associated with the ultrasound task score. The student’s use of cadavers to learn anatomy had the most correlation (p-value of 0.02). Assessing the psychomotor and visual–spatial tasks, linear regressions were used against the ultrasound task scores. Correspondingly, the p-values were 0.007 and 0.008. Conclusions: Ultrasound ability is based on hand–eye coordination and spatial relationships. Increased aptitude in these abilities may forecast future success in this skill. Those who may need more assistance can have their training tailored to them and further support offered. Full article

Aim: To investigate the knowledge of and attitudes towards herpes zoster (HZ) and its vaccination, as well as the vaccination status of Chinese patients with rheumatic disease. Method: A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted among patients visiting the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Peking University First Hospital from 1 March to 30 April 2024. Information on HZ infection and vaccination status was recorded. The questionnaire assessed their knowledge of HZ and the HZ vaccine with nine questions, scoring one point for each correct answer, resulting in a total score ranging from zero to nine. Attitudes toward HZ and vaccines were measured by a five-point Likert scale, with scores ranging from one (“strongly disagree”) to five (“strongly agree”). Factors associated with knowledge and attitude scores were analyzed using an ordinal logistic regression. Results: A total of 1036 patients completed the questionnaire, with a mean age of 47.1 years, and 79.3% were females. The three most prevalent diseases were systemic lupus erythematosus (32.4%), rheumatoid arthritis (26.3%) and Sjögren’s syndrome (9.9%). A total of 243 patients (23.5%) reported a history of HZ or current HZ infection. Only 2.0% of the patients had been vaccinated, while 51.0% expressed willingness to be vaccinated in the future. The median knowledge score was four (2, 5) (ranging from zero to nine), and the median attitude score was 19 (17, 20) (ranging from 5 to 25). Factors associated with higher knowledge scores included being female (β = 0.448, p = 0.001), having a higher educational level (β = 0.355, p < 0.001), having a higher monthly income (β = 0.191, p = 0.008) and having comorbidities (β = 0.275, p = 0.023). Factors associated with higher attitude scores included being female (β = 0.279, p = 0.035), having a higher monthly income (β = 0.196, p = 0.037) and possessing a higher education level (β = 0.310, p = 0.045). Conclusions: Patients with rheumatic disease in China exhibit a low level of cognition regarding HZ as well as its vaccine, and the vaccination rate is very low. To improve the understanding and prevention awareness of HZ, health education should be intensified, particularly targeting males, those with lower levels of education and lower-income patients. Due to the intermittent and uncertain nature of emerging renewable energy sources in the modern power grid, the level of dispatchable power sources has been reduced. The contemporary power system is attempting to address this by investing in energy storage within the context of standalone microgrids (SMGs), which can operate in an island mode and off-grid. While renewable-rich SMGs can facilitate a higher level of renewable energy penetration, they also have more reliability issues compared to conventional power systems due to the intermittency of renewables. When an SMG system needs to be upgraded for reliability improvement, the cost of that reliability improvement should be divided among diverse customer sectors. In this research, we present four distinct approaches along with comprehensive simulation outcomes to address the problem of allocating reliability costs. The central issue in this study revolves around determining whether all consumers should bear an equal share of the reliability improvement costs or if these expenses should be distributed among them differently. When an SMG system requires an upgrade to enhance its reliability, it becomes imperative to allocate the associated costs among various customer sectors as equitably as possible. In our investigation, we model an SMG through a simulation experiment, involving nine distinct customer sectors, and utilize their hourly demand profiles for an entire year. We explore how to distribute the total investment cost of reliability improvement to each customer sector using four distinct methods. The first two methods consider the annual and seasonal peak demands in each industry. The third approach involves an analysis of Loss of Load (LOL) events and determining the hourly load requirements for each sector during these events. In the fourth approach, we employ the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) technique. The annual peak demand approach resulted in the educational sector bearing the highest proportion of the reliability improvement cost, accounting for 21.90% of the total burden. Similarly, the seasonal peak demand approach identified the educational sector as the most significant contributor, though with a reduced share of 15.44%. The normalized average demand during Loss of Load (LOL) events also indicated the same sector as the highest contributor, with 12.34% of the total cost. Lastly, the TOPSIS-based approach assigned a 15.24% reliability cost burden to the educational sector. Although all four approaches consistently identify the educational sector as the most critical in terms of its impact on system reliability, they yield different cost allocations due to variations in the methodology and weighting of demand characteristics. The underlying reasons for these differences, along with the practical implications and applicability of each method, are comprehensively discussed in this research paper. Based on our case study findings, we conclude that the education sector, which contributes more to LOL events, should bear the highest amount of the Cost of Reliability Improvement (CRI), while the hotel and catering sector’s share should be the lowest percentage. This highlights the necessity for varying reliability improvement costs for different consumer sectors. Full article
