The Effect of Short-Term Healthy Ketogenic Diet Ready-To-Eat Meals Versus Healthy Ketogenic Diet Counselling on Weight Loss in Overweight Adults: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Background/Objectives: Conventional ketogenic diets, although effective for weight loss, often contain high total and saturated fat intake, which leads to increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Thus, the Healthy Ketogenic Diet (HKD) was developed to address these concerns. It emphasizes calorie restriction, limiting net carbohydrate intake to 50 g per day, prioritizing unsaturated fats, and reducing saturated fat intake. However, adherence to the HKD remains a challenge in urban, time-constrained environments. Therefore, this pilot randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of Healthy Ketogenic Diet Ready-To-Eat (HKD-RTE) meals (provided for the first month only) versus HKD alone on weight loss and metabolic parameters among overweight adults. Methods: Multi-ethnic Asian adults (n = 50) with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27.5 kg/m2 were randomized into the HKD-RTE group (n = 24) and the HKD group (n = 26). Both groups followed the HKD for six months, with the HKD-RTE group receiving HKD-RTE meals during the first month. Five in-person workshops and mobile health coaching through the Nutritionist Buddy Keto app helped to facilitate dietary adherence. The primary outcome was the change in body weight at 6 months. Linear regression was performed on the change from baseline for each continuous outcome, adjusting for demographics and relevant covariates. Logistic regression was performed on binary weight loss ≥5%, adjusting for demographics and relevant covariates. Results: In the HKD group, participants’ adherence to the 50 g net carbohydrate target was 15 days, while that in the HKD-RTE group was 19 days over a period of 30 days. Participants’ adherence to calorie targets was 21 days in the HKD group and 23 days in the HKD-RTE. The average compliance with the HKD-RTE meals provided in the HKD-RTE group was 55%. The HKD-RTE group experienced a greater percentage weight loss at 1 month (−4.8 ± 3.0% vs. −1.8 ± 6.2%), although this was not statistically significant. This trend continued up to 6 months, with the HKD-RTE group showing a greater percentage weight reduction (−8.6 ± 6.8% vs. −3.9 ± 8.6%; p = 0.092). At 6 months, the HKD-RTE group had a greater reduction in total cholesterol (−0.54 ± 0.76 mmol/L vs. −0.05 ± 0.56 mmol/L; p = 0.283) and LDL-C (−0.43 ± 0.67 mmol/L vs. −0.03 ± 0.52 mmol/L; p = 0.374) compared to the HKD group. Additionally, the HKD-RTE group exhibited greater reductions in systolic blood pressure (−8.3 ± 9.7 mmHg vs. −5.3 ± 11.0 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (−7.7 ± 8.8 mmHg vs. −2.0 ± 7.0 mmHg), and HbA1c (−0.3 ± 0.5% vs. −0.1 ± 0.4%) than the HKD group (not statistically significant for any). Conclusions: Both HKD-RTE and HKD led to weight loss and improved metabolic profiles. The HKD-RTE group tended to show more favorable outcomes. Short-term HKD-RTE meal provision may enhance initial weight loss, with sustained long-term effects. Full article

Soil salinization and selenium (Se) deficiency threaten global food security. This study developed a composite bioinoculant combining ACC deaminase-producing Serratia liquefaciens and biogenically synthesized nano-selenium (SeNPs) to alleviate saline–alkali stress and enhance Se nutrition in rice (Oryza sativa L.). A strain of S. liquefaciens with high ACC deaminase activity was isolated and used to biosynthesize SeNPs with stable physicochemical properties. Pot experiments showed that application of the composite inoculant (S3: S. liquefaciens + 40 mmol/L SeNPs) significantly improved seedling biomass (fresh weight +53.8%, dry weight +60.6%), plant height (+31.6%), and root activity under saline–alkali conditions. S3 treatment also enhanced panicle weight, seed-setting rate, and grain Se content (234.13 μg/kg), meeting national Se-enriched rice standards. Moreover, it increased rhizosphere soil N, P, and K availability and improved microbial α-diversity. This is the first comprehensive demonstration that a synergistic bioformulation of ACC deaminase PGPR and biogenic SeNPs effectively mitigates saline–alkali stress, enhances soil fertility, and enables safe Se biofortification in rice. Accurately predicting how quickly people will adopt electric vehicles (EVs) is vital for planning charging stations, managing supply chains, and shaping climate policy. We present a forecasting model that uses three separate Long Short‑Term Memory (LSTM) branches—one for past EV sales, one for infrastructure and policy signals, and one for economic trends. An attention mechanism first highlights the most important weeks in each branch, then decides which branch matters most at any point in time. Trained end‑to‑end on publicly available data, the model beats traditional statistical methods and newer deep learning baselines while remaining small enough to run efficiently. An ablation study shows that every branch and both attention steps improve accuracy, and that adding policy and economic data helps more than relying on EV history alone. Because the network is modular and its attention weights are easy to interpret, it can be extended to produce confidence intervals, include physical constraints, or forecast adoption of other clean‑energy technologies. Coarse-grained soils serve as essential fill materials in earth–rock dam engineering, where their mechanical properties critically influence dam deformation and stability, directly impacting project safety. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are emerging as powerful tools for predicting the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils. However, AI-based prediction models for these properties face persistent challenges, particularly in parameter tuning—a process requiring substantial computational resources, extensive time, and specialized expertise. To address these limitations, this study proposes a novel prediction model that integrates Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) with an improved Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize the Elman Neural Network (ENN). The methodology encompasses three key aspects: First, the standard PSO algorithm is enhanced by dynamically adjusting its inertial weight and learning factors. The ASA algorithm is then employed to optimize the Adaptive PSO (APSO), effectively mitigating premature convergence and local optima entrapment during training, thereby ensuring convergence to the global optimum. Second, the refined PSO algorithm optimizes the ENN, overcoming its inherent limitations of slow convergence and susceptibility to local minima. Finally, validation through real-world engineering case studies demonstrates that the ASA-PSO-optimized ENN model achieves high accuracy in predicting the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils. This model provides reliable constitutive parameters for stress–strain analysis in earth–rock dam engineering applications. Full article

Objective: To determine reference values of liver stiffness during the first week of extrauterine life in healthy newborns, according to gestational age, sex, and birth weight, using three elastography techniques: point shear wave elastography (pSWE) and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) with convex and linear probes. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted at a single center on a hospital-based cohort of 287 newborns between 24 and 42 weeks of gestation, admitted between January 2023 and May 2024. Cases with liver disease, significant neonatal morbidity, or technically invalid studies were excluded. Hepatic elastography was performed during the first week of life using pSWE and 2D-SWE with both convex and linear probes. Clinical and technical neonatal variables were recorded. Liver stiffness values were analyzed in relation to gestational age, birth weight, and sex. Linear regression models were applied to assess associations, considering p-values < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results: After applying exclusion criteria, valid liver stiffness measurements were obtained in 208 cases with pSWE, 224 with 2D-SWE (convex probe), and 222 with 2D-SWE (linear probe). A statistically significant inverse association between liver stiffness and gestational age (p < 0.03) was observed across all techniques except for 2D-SWE with the linear probe. Only 2D-SWE with the convex probe showed a significant association with birth weight. No significant differences were observed based on neonatal sex. The 2D-SWE technique with the convex probe demonstrated significantly shorter examination times compared to pSWE (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Neonatal liver stiffness measured by pSWE and 2D-SWE with a convex probe shows an inverse correlation with gestational age, potentially reflecting the structural and functional maturation of the liver. These techniques are safe, reliable, and provide useful information for distinguishing normal findings in preterm neonates from early hepatic pathology. The values obtained represent a valuable reference for clinical hepatic assessment in the neonatal period. Full article

In this paper, we study direct and inverse problems for a spatial-fractional Black–Scholes equation with space-dependent volatility. For the direct problem, we provide CN-WSGD (Crank–Nicholson and the weighted and shifted Grünwald difference) scheme to solve the initial boundary value problem. The latter aims to recover the implied volatility via observable option prices. Using a linearization technique, we rigorously derive a mathematical formulation of the inverse problem in terms of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. Based on an integral equation, an efficient numerical reconstruction algorithm is proposed to recover the coefficient. Numerical results for both problems are provided to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of proposed methods. Full article

Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Human Health Risk in Parapenaeus longirostris from Coastal Tunisian Aquatic Ecosystems

Seafood contamination by heavy metals is a growing public health concern, particularly in regions like Tunisia where seafood is a major dietary component. This study assessed concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the muscle tissue of the red shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris, collected in 2023 from four coastal regions: Bizerte, Monastir, Kerkennah, and Gabes. Metal analysis was conducted using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. This species was chosen due to its ecological and economic importance. The study sites were chosen based on their differing levels of industrial, urban, and agricultural influence, providing a representative overview of regional contamination patterns. Mean concentrations were 1.04 µg/g for Zn, 0.59 µg/g for Cu, 1.56 µg/g for Pb, and 0.21 µg/g for Cd (dry weight). Pb was the most prevalent metal across sites. Statistically significant variation was observed only for Cu (p = 0.0334). All metal concentrations were below international safety limits set by FAO/WHO and the European Union. Compared to similar studies, the levels reported were similar or slightly lower. Human health risk was evaluated using target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) values. For adults, THQ ranged from 5.44 × 10−6 to 8.43 × 10−4, while for children it ranged from 2.40 × 10−5 to 3.72 × 10−3. HI values were also well below 1, indicating negligible non-carcinogenic risk. CR values for Cd and Pb in both adults and children fell within the acceptable risk range (10−6 to <10−4), suggesting no significant carcinogenic concern. This study provides the first field-based dataset on metal contamination in P. longirostris from Tunisia, contributing valuable insights for seafood safety monitoring and public health protection. Background: Nutrition is of paramount importance during early development, since suboptimal growth in this period of life is linked to adverse long- and mid-term outcomes. This is particularly relevant for preterm infants, who fail to thrive during the first weeks of life and develop extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR). This group of premature babies represents an interesting population to investigate using a metabolomic approach to optimize nutritional intake. Aims: To analyse and compare the urinary metabolomic pattern at birth of preterm infants with and without growth restriction at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age or at discharge, searching for putative markers of growth failure. Methods: We enrolled preterm infants between 23 and 32 weeks of gestational age (GA) and/or with a birth weight <1500 g, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health of Padova University Hospital. We collected urinary samples within 48 h of life and performed untargeted metabolomic analysis using mass spectrometry. Results: Sixteen EUGR infants were matched with sixteen non-EUGR controls. The EUGR group showed lower levels of L-cystathionine, kynurenic acid, L-carnosine, N-acetylglutamine, xanthurenic acid, aspartylglucosamine, DL5-hydroxylysine-hydrocloride, homocitrulline, and L-aminoadipic acid, suggesting a lower anti-inflammatory and antioxidant status with respect to the non-EUGR group. Conclusions: Metabolomic analysis suggests a basal predisposition to growth restriction, the identification of which could be useful for tailoring nutritional approaches. Full article

Multi-Model Dialectical Evaluation of LLM Reasoning Chains: A Structured Framework with Dual Scoring Agents

(1) Background and objectives: Large language models (LLMs) such as GPT, Mistral, and LLaMA exhibit strong capabilities in text generation, yet assessing the quality of their reasoning—particularly in open-ended and argumentative contexts—remains a persistent challenge. This study introduces Dialectical Agent, an internally developed modular framework designed to evaluate reasoning through a structured three-stage process: opinion, counterargument, and synthesis. The framework enables transparent and comparative analysis of how different LLMs handle dialectical reasoning. (2) Methods: Each stage is executed by a single model, and final syntheses are scored via two independent LLM evaluators (LLaMA 3.1 and GPT-4o) based on a rubric with four dimensions: clarity, coherence, originality, and dialecticality. In parallel, a rule-based semantic analyzer detects rhetorical anomalies and ethical values. All outputs and metadata are stored in a Neo4j graph database for structured exploration. (3) Results: The system was applied to four open-weight models (Gemma 7B, Mistral 7B, Dolphin-Mistral, Zephyr 7B) across ten open-ended prompts on ethical, political, and technological topics. The results show consistent stylistic and semantic variation across models, with moderate inter-rater agreement. Semantic diagnostics revealed differences in value expression and rhetorical flaws not captured by rubric scores. (4) Originality: The framework is, to our knowledge, the first to integrate multi-stage reasoning, rubric-based and semantic evaluation, and graph-based storage into a single system. It enables replicable, interpretable, and multidimensional assessment of generative reasoning—supporting researchers, developers, and educators working with LLMs in high-stakes contexts. Full article

Guinea pigs used in research may experience inappetence or decreased intestinal motility, which can significantly compromise their welfare. This study evaluates the use of mirtazapine on appetite and intestinal motility in guinea pigs. An initial pharmacokinetics and efficacy study was performed using healthy male guinea pigs administered mirtazapine at 1.88, 3.75, or 7.5 mg orally once daily for four days (n = 6), in a crossover design where all animals received all doses. Body, feed, and fecal weights were taken daily for 4 days. There were no significant differences in weight gains, feed intake, or fecal output as compared to guinea pigs given saline only (n = 3). Blood was collected under anesthesia at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 8, 12, and 24 h post-administration. Pharmacokinetic analysis completed after the first dose showed peak plasma levels at 30 min, then falling below the limit of detection between 8 h and 12 h at all doses. Based on the pharmacokinetic profile, a follow-up study was performed in another set of healthy male guinea pigs with every 8 h dosing at 1.88 mg orally for 5 days (n = 6). There was a significant increase in feed intake during mirtazapine administration as compared to baseline intake, but no significant difference in weight gains. This study shows that mirtazapine can be used as an appetite stimulant in guinea pigs but must be dosed at least every eight hours to be effective. Full article

In order to improve the inversion accuracy of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and overcome the limitations of traditional linear methods, this paper proposes an improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA). First, an equilibrium grouping strategy is designed to balance the contribution weight of each subgroup to the global optimal solution, suppressing the local optimum traps caused by the dominance of high-quality groups. Second, an adaptive movement operator is constructed to dynamically regulate the step size of the search, enhancing the guiding effect of the optimal solution. In synthetic data tests of three typical electrical models, including a high-resistivity anomaly with 5% random noise, a normal fault, and a reverse fault, the improved algorithm shows an approximately 2.3 times higher accuracy in boundary identification of the anomaly body compared to the least squares (LS) method and standard SFLA. Additionally, the root mean square error is reduced by 57%. In the engineering validation at the Baota Mountain mining area in Jurong, the improved SFLA inversion clearly reveals the undulating bedrock morphology. At a measuring point 55 m along the profile, the bedrock depth is 14.05 m (ZK3 verification value 12.0 m, error 17%), and at 96 m, the depth is 6.9 m (ZK2 verification value 6.7 m, error 3.0%). The characteristic of deeper bedrock to the south and shallower to the north is highly consistent with the terrain and drilling data (RMSE = 1.053). This algorithm provides reliable technical support for precise detection of complex geological structures using ERT. Full article

High demand for sustainable solutions in the construction industry determines the significant relevance of developing new eco-friendly composites with a reduced carbon impact on the environment. The main aim of this study is to investigate the possibility and efficiency of using technical sulfur (TS) as a modifying additive for geopolymer composites and to select the optimal content of polypropylene fiber (PF). To assess the potential of TS, experimental samples of geopolymer solutions based on metakaolin and fly ash were prepared. The TS content varied from 0% to 9% by weight of binder in 3% increments. In the first stage, the density, compressive and flexural strength, capillary water absorption and microstructure of hardened geopolymer composites were tested. The TS additive in an amount of 3% was the most effective and provided an increase in compressive strength by 12.6%, flexural strength by 12.8% and a decrease in capillary water absorption by 18.2%. At the second stage, the optimal PF content was selected, which was 0.75%. The maximum increases in strength properties were recorded for the composition with 3% TS and 0.75% PF: 8% for compression and 32.6% for bending. Capillary water absorption decreased by 12.9%. The geopolymer composition developed in this work, modified with TP and PF, has sufficient mechanical and physical properties and can be considered for further study in order to determine its competitiveness with cement composites in real construction practice. Not All Weight Loss Is Equal: Divergent Patterns and Prognostic Roles in Head and Neck Cancer Versus High-Grade B-Cell Lymphoma

Background: Malnutrition and unintended weight loss are frequent in cancer patients and linked to poorer outcomes. However, data on long-term weight trajectories, particularly comparing different cancer entities, remain limited. Methods: In this retrospective, multicenter study, we analyzed 145 patients diagnosed with either head and neck cancer (HNC; n = 48) or high-grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBCL; n = 97). Body weight, C-reactive protein (CrP), albumin, and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) were assessed at diagnosis and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Clinically relevant weight loss was defined as >5% from baseline. Survival analyses were performed for HGBCL patients. Results: Weight loss was common in both cohorts, affecting 32.2% at 3 months and persisting in 42.3% at 12 months. Nearly half of HNC patients had sustained >5% weight loss at one year, whereas HGBCL patients were more likely to regain weight, with significantly higher rates of weight gain at 6 and 12 months (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02). At baseline, HGBCL patients showed elevated CrP and lower albumin compared to HNC (both p < 0.001). Weight loss at 6 months was significantly associated with reduced overall survival in HGBCL (p < 0.01). Both Δweight at 6 months and mGPS emerged as useful prognostic indicators. Conclusions: This study reveals distinct patterns of weight change and systemic inflammation between HNC and HGBCL patients during the first year after diagnosis. These findings highlight the need for entity-specific nutritional monitoring and tailored supportive care strategies extending into survivorship. Prospective studies integrating body composition analyses are warranted to better guide long-term management. Full article

This study aimed to determine the factors associated with the occurrence of the first-wave dominant follicle (DF) in the ovary ipsilateral to the corpus luteum (CL) in lactating dairy cows and dairy heifers. A total of 505 estruses were investigated (lactating dairy cows, n = 361; dairy heifers, n = 144). The locations of the preovulatory follicle (PF) and regressed CL were examined at the estrus, and the locations of the first-wave dominant follicle (DF) and newly formed CL were examined seven days after estrus using transrectal ultrasonography. Then, cows were classified into two groups: the first-wave DF in the ovary ipsilateral to the CL (IG) and the first-wave DF in the ovary contralateral to the CL (CG). To evaluate the factors which affect the occurrence of IG and CG, binominal logistic regression analysis was conducted; the location of the PF and regressing CL, season (warm: June–September; cool: October–May), live weight, days in milk at estrus, daily milk production, and body condition score were used as independent variables. The occurrence rate of IG was significantly higher when the PF was located contralateral to the regressing CL (lactating dairy cows, 63.4%; dairy heifers, 58.6%) rather than ipsilateral (lactating dairy cows, 44.9%; dairy heifers, 35.1%). The IG occurrence rate was significantly higher with an increase in daily milk production (<30 kg, 47.3%; 30–40 kg, 55.2%; >40 kg, 60.5%) in lactating dairy cows. In conclusion, the occurrence of IG was associated with relative locations of the PF and regressing CL in lactating dairy cows and dairy heifers and with the level of milk production in lactating dairy cows. Research has widely validated three-band spectral index as a simple, valid, and highly accurate method of estimating the copper content of soil. However, selecting the best band combination from hundreds of thousands, even millions of candidate combinations in hyperspectral data, is a very complicated problem. To address this issue, this study collected a total of 170 soil samples from the Aktas copper-gold mining area in Fuyun County, Xinjiang, China. Then, two algorithms including Competitive Weighted Resampling (CARS) and Stepwise Regression Analysis (STE) were applied to pick the bands from the original and first-order derivative spectra, respectively. A three-band index model was developed using the selected feature bands to estimate soil copper content. Results showed the first-order derivative spectrum transforms the spectral curve into a sharper one, with more peaks and valleys, which is beneficial for increasing the correlation between bands and copper content compared with the original spectrum. Moreover, integrating first-order derivative spectroscopy with CARS makes it possible to precisely identify key spectral bands and outperforms the dimensionality-reduction capabilities compared with the integration of STE. This strategy drastically reduces the time spent screening and is proven to have similar model accuracy, as compared to the individual group lifting method. Specifically, it reduces the duration of an 8 h task down to a mere 2 s. An intelligent screening of three-band indices is proposed in this study as a method of rapidly estimating copper content in soil. Full article
