Barrel tools are increasingly used in high-precision machining of free-form surfaces. However, limited studies evaluate their performance specifically on spherical geometries, where tool–surface contact characteristics differ significantly. Understanding how tool geometry and process parameters influence surface quality and cutting forces in such cases remains underexplored. This study evaluates how barrel cutter radius and varying machining parameters affect cutting forces and surface roughness when milling internal and external spherical surfaces. Machining tests were conducted on structural steel 1.1191 using two barrel cutters with different curvature radii (85 mm and 250 mm) on a 5-axis CNC machine. Feed per tooth and radial depth of cut were systematically varied. Cutting forces were measured using a dynamometer, and surface roughness was assessed using the Rz parameter, which is more sensitive to peak deviations than Ra. Novelty lies in isolating spherical surface shapes (internal vs. external) under identical path trajectories and systematically correlating tool geometry to force and surface metrics. The larger curvature tool (250 mm) consistently generated up to twice the cutting force of the smaller radius tool under equivalent conditions. External surfaces showed higher Rz values than internal ones due to less favorable contact geometry. Radial depth of the cut had a linear influence on force magnitude, while feed rate had a limited effect except at higher depths. Smaller-radius barrel tools and internal geometries are preferable for minimizing cutting forces and achieving better surface quality when machining spherical components. Physiological and Chemical Response of Urochloa brizantha to Edaphic and Microclimatic Variations Along an Altitudinal Gradient in the Amazon

Urochloa brizantha (Brizantha) is cultivated under varying altitudinal and management conditions. Twelve full-sun (monoculture) plots and twelve shaded (silvopastoral) plots were established, proportionally distributed at 170, 503, 661, and 1110 masl. Evaluations were conducted 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 days after establishment. The conservation and integration of trees in silvopastoral systems reflected a clear anthropogenic influence, evidenced by the preference for species of the Fabaceae family, likely due to their multipurpose nature. Although the altitudinal gradient did not show direct effects on soil properties, intermediate altitudes revealed a significant role of CaCO3 in enhancing soil fertility. These edaphic conditions at mid-altitudes favored the leaf area development of Brizantha, particularly during the early growth stages, as indicated by significantly larger values (p < 0.05). However, at the harvest stage, no significant differences were observed in physiological or productive traits, nor in foliar chemical components, underscoring the species’ high hardiness and broad adaptation to both soil and altitude conditions. In Brizantha, a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in stomatal size and density was observed under shade in silvopastoral areas, where solar radiation and air temperature decreased, while relative humidity increased. Nonetheless, these microclimatic variations did not lead to significant changes in foliar chemistry, growth variables, or biomass production, suggesting a high degree of adaptive plasticity to microclimatic fluctuations. Foliar ash content exhibited an increasing trend with altitude, indicating greater efficiency of Brizantha in absorbing calcium, phosphorus, and potassium at higher altitudes, possibly linked to more favorable edaphoclimatic conditions for nutrient uptake. Finally, forage quality declined with plant age, as evidenced by reductions in protein, ash, and In Vitro Dry Matter Digestibility (IVDMD), alongside increases in fiber, Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF). These findings support the recommendation of cutting intervals between 30 and 45 days, during which Brizantha displays a more favorable nutritional profile, higher digestibility, and consequently, greater value for animal feeding. Restaurants and open markets generate considerable quantities of organic waste. Converting these residues into poultry feed ingredients offers a sustainable disposal route. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and sensory viability of a novel feed complement formulated from Bonito fish meal (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis) and Única potato peel flour (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Única). This study was conducted in three phases: (i) production and nutritional characterization of the two by-product flours; (ii) formulation of a 48:52 (w/w) blend, incorporated into broiler diets at 15%, 30%, and 45% replacement levels over a 7-week trial divided into starter (3 weeks), grower (3 weeks), and finisher (1 week) phases; and (iii) assessment of growth performance (weight gain, final weight, and feed conversion ratio), followed by a sensory evaluation of the resulting meat using a Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) analysis. The Bonito fish meal exhibited 50.78% protein, while the Única potato peel flour was rich in carbohydrates (74.08%). The final body weights of broiler chickens ranged from 1872.1 to 1886.4 g across treatments, and the average feed conversion ratio across all groups was 0.65. Replacing up to 45% of commercial feed with the formulated complement did not significantly affect growth performance (p > 0.05). Sensory analysis revealed that meat from chickens receiving 15% and 45% substitution levels was preferred in terms of aroma and taste, whereas the control group was rated higher in appearance. These findings suggest that the formulated feed complement may represent a viable poultry-feed alternative with potential sensory and economic benefits, supporting future circular-economy strategies. In this study, the seeking behaviour and food acceptance of larvae of Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were analysed under laboratory conditions. Larval orientation and feeding preferences were assessed using a selection arena for neonate larvae and a four-way olfactometer for third-instar larvae. Stimulants included amaranth bars with additives (honey and chocolate) and natural amaranth (toasted grain only). The results showed that amaranth volatiles influence the orientation and feeding behaviour of this polyphagous insect. A marked preference for sugar-rich foods was observed, with amaranth with honey and amaranth with chocolate being the food sources most frequently chosen by the neonate larvae. These individuals exhibited a gregarious feeding behaviour and did not engage in cannibalism. The third-instar larvae also showed a preference for sweet food but were more attracted to the amaranth–additive combination. In the four-way olfactometer bioassays, chocolate was the most frequently chosen stimulus, while cellophane did not differ significantly from air. An analysis of volatile compounds by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that amaranth with chocolate releases more volatile compounds (16) compared with honey (12) and natural amaranth (6), suggesting that these volatiles could possibly influence the larvae’s choice of food source. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous pest posing a major threat to Poaceae crops, particularly corn (Zea mays), in China. However, its ability to adapt to Job’s tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), an edible and medicinal Poaceae species, under continuous rearing remains insufficiently understood. In this study, FAW survival, development, and reproduction were assessed over eight generations on two cultivars of Job’s tears, ‘Cuiyi 1’ and ‘Puyi 6’. Feeding and oviposition preferences were also examined in FAW populations reared on ‘Puyi 6’ by offering corn and ‘Puyi 6’ as hosts. Sustained rearing for five to eight generations on both cultivars significantly increased population fitness, with greater improvements observed in the ‘Puyi 6’ group. FAW reared on corn or ‘Puyi 6’ for two generations exhibited strong preferences for corn, whereas those reared on ‘Puyi 6’ for five to eight generations showed no significant host preference. These findings suggest that transgenerational adaptation markedly improved FAW performance and acceptance of Job’s tears, underscoring the need for intensified monitoring of FAW dynamics during the cultivation of Job’s tears. Cruciferous vegetables are popular in Asian dishes. However, striped flea beetles prefer to feed on leaves, which can damage the appearance of crops and reduce their economic value. Due to the lack of pest monitoring, the occurrence of pests is often irregular and unpredictable. Regular and quantitative spraying of pesticides for pest control is an alternative method. Nevertheless, this requires manual execution and is inefficient. This paper presents a system powered by solar energy, utilizing batteries and supercapacitors for energy storage to support the implementation of edge AI devices in outdoor environments. Raspberry Pi is utilized for artificial intelligence image recognition and the Internet of Things (IoT). YOLOv5 is implemented on the edge device, Raspberry Pi, for detecting striped flea beetles, and StyleGAN3 is also utilized for data augmentation in the proposed system. The recognition accuracy reaches 85.4%, and the results are transmitted to the server through a 4G network. The experimental results indicate that the system can operate effectively for an extended period. This system enhances sustainability and reliability and greatly improves the practicality of deploying smart pest detection technology in remote or resource-limited agricultural areas. In subsequent applications, drones can plan routes for pesticide spraying based on the distribution of pests. Full article

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most preferred hosts of polyphagous stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and leaf-footed bugs (Hemiptera: Coreidae). These hemipterans can infest tomato fruits at all stages of fruit ripening. However, it is unclear whether there is any feeding preference for these true bugs among different ripening stages of tomato (green, breaker, pink, and red stages). Feeding and behavioral assays were performed to determine the feeding preference and damage potential of two common stink bugs—the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys (Stål)) and the southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula L.)—and a leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas)) among the various ripening stages of tomato. The results indicated that green is the most preferred ripening stage for N. viridula and L. zonatus, while pink tomatoes were found to be a more preferred feeding site for H. halys. Fully ripe red tomatoes were found to be the least preferred feeding site for all three insects. The findings of this study will be useful for developing fruit damage symptom-based monitoring programs and establishing economic threshold levels for these pests in tomatoes, as well as informing harvesting regimes. Substrate is an important component of a fish’s habitat environment. Fish preferences for substrate influence their growth and development, feeding, hiding, schooling, and reproduction. To explore the habitat preference of Brachymystax tsinlingensis, this study was conducted on the preferences of B. pre-smolts, post-smolts, and juveniles for three substrate colors, white, blue, and black, and four substrate types, sand (<0.5 cm in diameter), small gravel (1–2 cm in diameter), medium gravel (5–7 cm in diameter), and large gravel (12–16 cm in diameter), which were investigated in light (10–60 lx) and dark (no light) environments. The results showed that the individual populations of B. tsinlingensis in three periods of time had a clear preference for substrate color, preferring black substrate and staying away from blue substrate under both light and dark environmental conditions; B. tsinlingensis pre-smolts and post-smolts preferred sandy substrate, and juveniles preferred medium gravel substrate. The choice of substrate color and substrate type by B. tsinlingensis is a manifestation of the living environment characteristics of this species, which is conducive to their hiding, better avoidance of enemies, and improvement of their survival rate. Based on the research results and the early biological characteristics of B. tsinlingensis, it is recommended to use black or dark substrate during the cultivation of B. tsinlingensis fry. During the larval fish stage, a sandy substrate environment should be provided. During the juvenile fish stage, a medium-gravel environment should be provided. Full article

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a highly destructive pest that poses serious threats and causes significant losses to the production of maize in China. This study evaluated the feeding and oviposition preferences of S. frugiperda when reared on four maize cultivars—sweet, waxy, common, and silage—across three consecutive generations. It also compared population adaptability among these cultivars and analyzed population parameters between the F1 and F3 generations. The findings revealed that all four F1 generation populations showed a preference for feeding and oviposition on sweet maize. However, over time, S. frugiperda exhibited a stronger preference, in terms of feeding and oviposition behaviors, for the natal host plant across three consecutive generations of rearing. The fall armyworm completed its life cycle and oviposited on all four maize varieties over three generations. The sweet cultivar population had the highest intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of increase, net reproductive rate, larval survival rate, pupation rate, eclosion rate, fecundity, and pupal weight, while the silage cultivar population had the shortest larval stage, pre-adult stage, and adult lifespan and the pupal weight and the fecundity were the lowest. Overall, the population fitness was the highest on the sweet cultivar, and the lowest on the silage cultivar. Compared with F1, the F3 generation of the FAW had a significantly shorter developmental duration in four maize cultivars. Except for the waxy maize cultivars, the fecundity of the other three cultivars did not differ significantly between F1 and F3. This study provides fundamental information on the trend of fall armyworm population changes in maize fields and serves as a reference for rational maize cultivar planting decisions. Full article

Digestibility, together with intake, is the main factor affecting animal productivity. It can be assessed in vivo by measuring total feed intake and faecal output (time-consuming and labour-intensive) or with the aid of substances known as markers. Internal markers such as acid insoluble ash (AIA) or undigestible neutral detergent fibre (uNDF) have been alleged to be preferable for digestibility estimations. The use of AIA and uNDF for digestibility estimation in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets has been rarely documented; hence, the objectives of the present paper were to compare digestibility values obtained by total faecal collection vs. AIA or uNDF (Experiment 1), to compare digestibility values obtained using Cr2O3 as an external marker vs. AIA or uNDF (Experiment 2), and to compare digestibility values obtained using AIA vs. uNDF in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets (Experiment 3). Faecal recoveries of AIA and uNDF (Experiment 1) were very variable and likely influenced by contamination of faeces and/or feedstuffs with soil and/or dust. Then, the regressions between digestibility values obtained in metabolism cages or using Cr2O3 as an external marker and AIA or uNDF were not significant. The use of these two latter markers for estimation of digestibility in beef cattle fed high-concentrate and barley straw diets is not recommended. Full article

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Understanding the feeding behavior and infection rates of these vectors is crucial for disease surveillance and control. We aimed to investigate the natural infection rate of Leishmania spp. in phlebotomines and analyze their blood-feeding patterns in one of the priority areas of the state of São Paulo for the implementation of insecticide-impregnated dog collars. Sand flies were collected from urban and peri-urban areas between 2022 and 2024 using CDC light traps, manual aspiration, and Shannon traps. PCR was used to detect Leishmania DNA (SSU rDNA gene), and blood meal sources (COI gene). A total of 414 sand flies were collected, with 222 engorged females analyzed for blood meals and 192 specimens tested for Leishmania spp. infection. The predominant blood source was humans (67%), followed by chickens (64.1%), and dogs (18.9%), considering that 45.1% of the samples presented mixed blood meals. Leishmania infantum was found in 1% of the samples. These findings highlight the feeding plasticity of sand flies and their potential role in disease transmission, reinforcing the need for continuous epidemiological surveillance and vector control strategies, particularly the implementation of insecticide-impregnated dog collars. The objective was to conduct a review and meta-analysis of questionnaire-based surveys of dengue knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and practices (KAP)s among the general public in Sri Lanka as no prior island-wide survey existed. The electronic database PubMed and other bibliography were searched for literature on dengue questionnaire-based KAP surveys in Sri Lanka from 2000–2023. Data pertaining to the three domains were extracted from sixteen eligible articles, pooled, and analyzed separately using random effect models. Meta-analyses of the three domains were performed using R version 3.6.3. The population surveyed (8955) was <0.045% of the total Sri Lankan population. The publication frequency increased over time and surveys were distributed in Colombo and suburbs 43.7% (7/16), Kandy 25% (4/16,) Gampaha 12.5% (2/16), and 6.3% (1/16) one each in Kurunegala, Matara, Batticaloa, and Jaffna. Knowledge on dengue transmission, vector breeding, and fever as a symptom was >80%, while on vector species, preferred feeding times, recurrence of dengue it was > 55% and on warning signs of severity it was 25%. Attitudes towards community participation in dengue prevention activities and knowledge of dengue risk factors (avoidance of aspirin and dark colored drinks) were poor, while practice of control measures (removal of water collecting receptacles, roof-gutter management) lacked regularity. Factors Influencing Health-Related Practices Among Hispanic Parents: A Formative Study to Inform Childhood Obesity Prevention

Background: Childhood obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic families in the U.S. Although parenting practices and interventions appear to be viable approaches to lower the risk of childhood obesity, there is limited information on which parenting practices would be relevant and culturally appropriate for Hispanic families. This study aimed to document the health-related factors that impact Hispanic parenting practices to inform evidence-based parenting interventions to improve child health outcomes and reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional, formative research guided by the COREQ checklist. Hispanic parents of elementary school-aged children were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling. Eligible parents completed a brief sociodemographic survey, the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ), and an individual semi-structured interview. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using a coding-based thematic approach. Results: Seventeen parents (88.2% female) participated in the study, and the majority reported Spanish as their preferred language (70.6%). According to parent-reported data, the children’s (52.9% female) mean age was 8.4 ± 1.5 years, and over half were classified as having overweight or obesity. The CFPQ analysis indicated that parents scored highest on subscales related to encouraging healthy eating and eating variety, a finding that was reinforced by interview data. Qualitative analysis identified four key themes: 1. parenting roles, routines, and strategies for promoting culturally appropriate and healthy meals; 2. beliefs of children’s health and weight; 3. beliefs on physical activity and screen time; and 4. environmental and social factors affecting access to healthy food and physical activity. Conclusions: Both quantitative and qualitative results emphasize that parents engage in healthy eating guidance and eating variety and are aware of the factors that impact parenting practices and their children’s health. To improve child health outcomes and reduce the risk of childhood obesity among Hispanic families, parenting interventions need to be culturally responsive and address the factors that influence parenting practices. The findings from this study highlight four key areas to prioritize when designing or adapting parenting interventions to lower the risk of childhood obesity among Hispanic families. Full article

Brewer’s spent grain (BSG), the most abundant by-product from breweries, is mainly discarded or used as animal feed. However, to increase the brewing sustainability, biotechnological utilization of BSG is a much preferred solution. This study examined the fermentation of BSG, composed of old wheat bread and barley malt, by metabolic activity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on both hydrolyzed and non-hydrolyzed media. Enzymatic hydrolysis with Viscozyme® W FG for 6 h was selected as the most effective and was used in the further research step to prepare the hydrolyzed BSG-based medium. Both media supported almost uniform yeast growth (numbers of S. cerevisiae cells was about 8 log10 CFU/g) in an acidic environment (pH value was about 5), but fermentation of hydrolyzed BSG resulted in 20% higher sugar consumption and 10% higher total titratable acidity. These findings underscore the potential of enzymatic pretreatment to improve fermentation performance. The adaptability of S. cerevisiae and the fermentability of both substrates suggest promising potential for scalable BSG valorization strategies in circular food systems. Full article

Preclinical Parkinson’s Disease Models for Non-Motor Symptoms: Research Recommendations from a Systematic Review

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by motor impairments resulting from dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra. However, PD is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder, where non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, sleep disorders, and autonomic dysfunction significantly impact patients’ quality of life. These non-motor symptoms often exhibit poor responsiveness to traditional dopaminergic therapies, underscoring a critical gap in current treatment strategies. Our systematic review investigates established methods of PD induction in rodent models and evaluates the methodologies used to assess non-motor symptoms. The review was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and the Cochrane handbook. Thirty-two studies from 832 articles were included. The studies were characterized by MPTP, 6-OHDA, and rotenone. Our results indicate that there was considerable heterogeneity in behavioral and motor tests, which poses challenges for data comparability and highlights the lack of consensus regarding the most appropriate modeling strategies for specific PD-related behavioral outcomes. All three models demonstrated behavioral changes consistent with dopaminergic impairment when compared to control groups. MPTP-induced models showed significant non-motor deficits across various tests, except in social recognition and novelty-suppressed feeding. The 6-OHDA model consistently produced non-motor impairments, supporting its utility in replicating PD-like neurotoxicity. Rotenone-treated animals exhibited reduced social interaction, decreased sucrose preference, and increased immobility in behavioral assays, further supporting its validity. Overall, our findings indicate that these neurotoxin-based models are effective in reproducing non-motor symptoms of PD, though methodological heterogeneity highlights the need for greater standardization in future preclinical research.
