Fathers are globally recognized as influential figures in children’s development, yet the specific mechanisms linking paternal beliefs to preschoolers’ social adjustment remain insufficiently explored. This study examined the sequential mediation effects of father involvement and the father–child relationship on the link between paternal progressive beliefs and children’s social adjustment (indexed by social competence and problem behaviors). A stratified random sample of 1862 Chinese mother–father dyads (3724 individual participants) was recruited. Structural equation modeling showed that the following: (1) Fathers’ progressive beliefs had a direct positive association with children’s social competence, and a small but significant direct positive link to children’s anger–aggression behaviors; (2) The associations between the fathers’ beliefs and children’s social adjustment were indirectly explained by a sequential mediation process: beliefs were associated with greater father involvement, which, in turn, connected to fostered closeness or increased father–child conflict, ultimately leading to more positive adjustments through closeness, or to more negative adjustments via conflict. This study also uncovered discrepancies between mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions of the fathering process. Notably, due to the lack of parallel measures of maternal constructs, these findings reflect paternal contributions within the family system rather than unique effects. These findings were discussed within the transitional context of culturally specific Chinese fathering. This study extends the traditional “parenting beliefs–practices–outcomes” framework to include the parent–child relationship, highlighting the importance of targeting fathers’ effective relationship-building practices in family programs. Father engagement in parenting programs is vital for positive child development and family wellbeing, yet fathers remain underrepresented in parenting programs. This study examines factors influencing fathers’ participation using two discrete choice experiments. Experiment 1 identified key attributes affecting engagement, including program content, cost, and delivery modality. Experiment 2 refined these insights, showing a preference for cost-free, face-to-face programs with practical activities. Findings highlight the importance of addressing financial barriers; offering flexible, relevant content; and designing father-friendly programs to improve accessibility and inclusivity. By prioritising fathers’ needs and preferences, parenting programs can better support child and family outcomes, fostering greater engagement and promoting equality across diverse family systems. Background/Objectives: As an independent research group, we examined parent and child outcomes of three different parenting programs delivered at scale. The programs were implemented in Bhutan, Serbia and Zambia by different organizations. Methods: Mixed methods included a caregiver interview using the HOME Inventory, a direct child assessment using the Global Scales of Early Development (GSED) and focus group discussions with caregivers (FGD). Sampled mothers and children were randomly selected for the HOME/GSED: Bhutan n = 432, Serbia n = 636, Zambia n = 1024. Over 40 mothers and fathers of children under 3 years were purposively selected for FGD. Intention-to-treat and secondary regression analyses of attendees and non-attendees were conducted on the HOME and GSED; FGDs were subject to content analysis. Results: Parenting practices were found to be minimally (Bhutan) or modestly (Zambia) higher for caregivers who attended group sessions. Caregivers in Serbia who recalled receiving play messages had higher HOME scores. Child outcomes showed small (Bhutan) or no differences (Serbia, Zambia) associated with participation. Conclusions: Explanations focused on limits to program participation in scaled programs, the need for pilot evaluations to ensure that the program design is effective, and the need to monitor delivery quality and other implementation processes. Background: Maternal and newborn health disparities remain a challenge in Puerto Rico, especially in underserved communities. Comienzo Saludable Puerto Rico, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy Start Initiative (HRSA), addresses these gaps through an integrated Networks of Care model known as Cuidado Compartido. Comienzo Saludable Puerto Rico is a maternal, paternal, and child health program aimed at improving the health and well-being of pregnant women, mothers, fathers, newborns, and children in Puerto Rico, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. Methods: This paper presents the Comienzo Saludable Puerto Rico program’s Cuidado Compartido model to integrate a network of healthcare providers and services across hospitals, community organizations, and families. This model aims to improve maternal and newborn/child health outcomes by focusing on the importance of integrated, hospital-community-based care networks. Results: Participants experienced significant improvements in key birth outcomes: low birth weight prevalence declined by 27.2% compared to the community baseline, premature birth rates decreased by 30.9%, and infant mortality dropped by 75%, reaching 0% by 2021 and remaining there through 2023. These results were complemented by increases in maternal mental health screening, paternal involvement, and breastfeeding practices. Conclusions: The Cuidado Compartido model demonstrates a scalable, culturally responsive strategy to improve maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes. It offers critical insights for implementation in other high-need contexts. Full article

Much U.S. research supports the effectiveness of parenting education delivered via the home visiting method. Home visitors are essential to reaching fathers in this context, but not all have favorable attitudes toward father engagement or feel confident working with fathers. Given that father involvement is important for a wide range of child and adolescent outcomes and that fathers benefit from parenting education, it is important to better understand the forces that shape home visitors’ attitudes toward fathers, and thus their subsequent efforts to include them in publicly funded programming. Using survey data from 95 home visitors in Tennessee, this study explores whether home visitors’ beliefs about fathers and attitudes toward father engagement vary as a function of home visitor or agency characteristics. Results suggest training in social work, reporting father-friendly organizational attitudes and behaviors at one’s agency, and reporting supervisor support specifically for father engagement relate to various favorable fathering attitudes. Home visitors’ strategies to engage fathers in home visiting are presented, including strategies for before, during, and after the home visit. Overall, family service agency administrators are in key positions to make decisions that can improve agency father-friendliness, home visitor attitudes toward fathers, and subsequent outcomes for fathers, mothers, and children. Parents provide most of the support needed for children with cerebral palsy (CP) to increase the child’s participation and independence. Understanding the experiences of parents caring for children with CP is essential for developing effective family programs and services. The current knowledge about parents’ experiences in CP is based on studies in Western countries, with little known about this phenomenon in Arab countries like Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to understand the unique experiences and support needs of Saudi parents caring for children with CP from a social-ecological perspective. We conducted a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study involving 12 semi-structured interviews with mothers and fathers of children with different types of CP. We analyzed the data using a reflexive thematic approach, following six distinct phases. Participants’ narratives revealed a complex caregiving journey marked by both challenges and rewards. Support from Saudi nuclear and extended family members was considered important; however, many parents expressed a need for additional physical and financial assistance from their families. Parents reported feeling stressed and experiencing challenges in accessing and navigating educational and healthcare services. Our findings highlight that Islamic values play a crucial role in the experiences of Saudi parents. These values foster a sense of collectivism, highlighting the importance of family support and community involvement, which can affect the Saudi caregiving environment. Parents remain an essential yet often invisible part of the Saudi caregiving system. Without adequate support, parents are at risk of experiencing social, financial, academic, physical, and mental health challenges, which may affect their overall family well-being. Future work may need to consider spiritual and gender roles when developing programs or services to support Saudi parents of children with CP. Full article

Background: Externalizing, internalizing and social problems are frequent comorbidities for children with ADHD. This study explored the effects of methylphenidate versus a child and parents’ parallel mindfulness program (MYmind) on children’s internalizing, externalizing and social problems. Data came from our RCT investigating treatment effects on the primary outcome of children’s ADHD symptoms. Methods: Children followed their ascribed course of treatment for 4 months: 46 children were in the mindfulness group and 42 in the medication group. Multilevel modeling analyzed the responses of four informants (mothers, fathers, children and teachers) across three follow-up points: short-term (2 months), medium-term (4 months) and long-term (10 months). Results: Both treatment groups improved from the baseline across all outcomes. No differences were found between groups on improvement of mindful awareness as reported by children at any time point. At the short-term follow-up, children in the medication group showed greater reductions as compared to those in the mindfulness group on internalizing problems (as observed by mothers), externalizing problems (mothers; fathers) and social problems (mothers; teachers). At the medium-term follow-up, children in the medication group still showed larger reductions in externalizing problems as observed by fathers, but on all other outcomes, informants’ reports did not differ between groups. At the long-term follow-up, none of the informants reported any differences between treatment groups in effects on internalizing, externalizing or social problems. Conclusions: Given the observations of similar improvements at short-, medium- and long-term, mindfulness might be a viable option for families of children with ADHD who are seeking an alternative to medication to reduce comorbid externalizing, internalizing and/or social problems. Background/Objectives: Parent training programs (PTPs) have long been recognized as effective interventions for early onset of child behavior problems, with evidence showing significant improvements in parenting practices and child outcomes. However, little is known about potential differences in treatment outcomes between mothers and fathers. This study examined changes in parenting practices and self-efficacy between mothers and fathers (n = 31 couples). Methods: Couples participated in a 10-week digital parent training program for child behavior problems. Both parents completed measures of parenting practices (Parenting Scale, Alabama Parenting Questionnaire) and self-efficacy (Parenting Tasks Checklist, Me as a Parent Scale) at baseline and post-intervention. Results: Significant, large-effect-size improvements in most parenting variables were found for both mothers and fathers (ps ≤ 0.03, ηp2 ≥ 0.15). No significant interaction effects were found between the parent (mother, father) and intervention time (pre, post-intervention) in parenting variables (p ≥ 0.18), indicating similar patterns of improvement. Mothers reported higher levels of positive parenting practices compared to fathers regardless of intervention time (p = 0.01, ηp2 = 0.19). The initial severity of child behavior problems moderated differences between parents in improvements in sense of competence (U = 171.50, p = 0.03), with smaller mother–father gaps observed for families beginning with higher levels of child behavior problems. No other demographic variables moderated parent differences. Conclusions: Digital delivery format may help promote more equitable benefits for both parents. Further research with larger samples and longer follow-up time is needed to validate these preliminary findings. Full article

The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of the Turkish Version of the Responsive Teaching program applied as an online group intervention on autistic children and their fathers. In this study, conducted with pre-test–post-test control group experimental design, 20 father–child pairs were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. This study’s independent variable was the implementation of the Turkish Version of the Responsive Teaching (TV-RT) program (TV-RT) applied as an online group intervention. The dependent variables of this study were (a) fathers’ interactional behaviors, (b) fathers’ ability to use TV-RT strategies, (c) children’s interactional behaviors, (d) children’s ability to use TV-RT pivotal behaviors, (e) children’s social interaction behaviors (typical social interaction and autistic interaction), and (f) the opinions of the fathers and mothers of the children in the experimental group about the program and results. Data were collected with the Turkish Version of the Maternal/Parent Behavior Rating Scale (M/PBRS-TV) to measure fathers’ interactional behaviors; the Responsive Teaching–Parent Strategy Profile (RT-PSP) to measure fathers’ level of use of the TV-RT strategies; the Turkish Version of the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS-TV) to measure children’s interactional behaviors; the Responsive Teaching–Pivotal Behavior Profile (RT-PBP) to measure children’s level of displaying TV-RT pivotal behaviors; and the Turkish Version of the Social Interaction Assessment Instrument (SIAI-TV) to measure children’s social interaction behaviors (typical social interaction and autistic interaction). In addition, social validity data were collected from the fathers and mothers in the experimental group through satisfaction questionnaires. Results revealed that the fathers of autistic children who received the intervention differed significantly on the use of TV-RT strategies and the quality of interactional behaviors from the fathers who did not receive the intervention. On the other side, autistic children in the experimental group showed significant progress on interactional behaviors, TV-RT pivotal behaviors, and social interaction behaviors and improved changes on autistic interaction behaviors. Fathers who participated in the online group TV-RT program, and their wives (mothers) as outside observers, reported high satisfaction with the program. Results were discussed extensively, and future suggestions are provided. Full article

This paper reports on the affordances and constraints encountered in the case of an innovative project designed to support early literacy development in Arabic and English while enhancing father-child wellbeing in Abu Dhabi. The project sought to encourage Emirati fathers to engage in interactive shared book reading at home with their young children. In a context where adult–child home reading is not a traditional practice and where children’s reading proficiency in public schools is often below international standards, the project sought to support families with their children’s early literacy development and to develop positive dispositions towards reading. Fathers (N = 80) of kindergarten children (4–5 years) in state schools in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were invited to participate in interactive workshops about shared parent–child reading. Fathers were provided with selected, high-quality books in both Arabic and English to read aloud with their children at home and were given guidance on ways to read interactively. In this paper, which draws upon survey results, focus group recordings, and researcher field notes from the workshop sites, the affordances and constraints encountered in supporting early home reading and parent–child wellbeing are explored. Recommendations are made for similar reading and wellbeing programs in multilingual contexts. These include providing accessible information to both fathers and mothers on the importance of reading with their children at home, sharing tips and modelling parent–child interactive reading, and the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate books for families. Background: Parental satisfaction is an important factor in the evaluation of early intervention programs but is rarely investigated. The Muenster Parental Program (MPP) is a short, evidence-based early intervention program that focuses on parental responsiveness. It is a family-centered intervention for parents of infants aged 3–18 months who have recently been diagnosed with hearing loss and fitted with hearing devices, including prior to or following cochlear implant surgery. Objective: We aim to receive feedback from parents regarding the process and outcomes of their participation in the MPP. Method: Following their participation, all participants of the MPP were asked to complete an evaluation questionnaire. This article reports feedback from the first 52 participants (44 mothers, 7 fathers, and 1 godmother). Their infants (N = 45) had moderate to complete hearing loss, they were aged 2–20 months, and 40% of them had an additional disease, disorder, and/or developmental delay. Results: Parents reported high levels of satisfaction with the content, didactics, setting, and individual benefits of the intervention, and a high recommendation rate (92%). The aspects most appreciated were meeting other affected parents and the concrete individual support of parent–child communication, including video feedback. Almost all parents (96%) reported a change in their communication style with their child. This confirms the results of a previous controlled intervention study on the enhancement of parental responsiveness via the MPP. Conclusions: This evaluation of the MPP from a parental point of view has revealed equally high satisfaction with the content, setting, and didactics amongst all parents regardless of any potentially influential parent or child variables. The MPP is well suited to a wide range of close caregivers’ needs despite the known diversity of children with hearing loss and their parents or families. Full article

Despite the health benefits of physical activity (PA), many individuals do not meet PA recommendations. Family-centered PA approaches, particularly active engagement by Mexican-heritage fathers, may support family PA. This study reports PA outcomes of a culturally tailored, father-focused, and family-centered, program for Mexican-heritage families. Promotora researchers recruited participating families (n = 59, n = 42 complete cases), consisting of children (mean age: 10.1 [SD = 0.9]), fathers, and mothers from five randomly selected geographic clusters in low-resourced colonias in south Texas, in a stepped-wedge randomized design. PA was measured using wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X accelerometers. Statistical analyses for moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), light PA (LPA), and sedentary time for the child, father, and mother were conducted using linear mixed models. The findings were as follows: children had no significant changes in MVPA (p = 0.18), LPA (p = 0.52), or sedentary behavior (p = 0.74); fathers had no significant changes in MVPA (p = 0.94), LPA (p = 0.17), or sedentary behavior (p = 0.15); and mothers had a significant decrease in LPA (p < 0.01), and no significant changes in MVPA (p = 0.66) or sedentary behavior (p = 0.77). Despite null results, this study provides an example of a culturally tailored, family-focused program implemented among Mexican-heritage families with limited PA resources and opportunities. Future PA interventions may require higher PA-focused doses over longer time periods to produce a significant change in LPA, MVPA, or sedentary time. Full article

This study aimed to examine the association between parent–child relationships and adolescents’ non-cognitive skills, while also investigating the mediating effect of social anxiety and number of friends. A survey was conducted with 773 students, ranging from grade 4 to 9, in five public schools of Guangdong Province of China (49.9% male), with a mean age of 12.20 years old. Latent mediation structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that (1) the father–child relationship and mother–child relationship both had a positive influence on grit, innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; (2) social anxiety had a negative effect on adolescent non-cognitive skills including innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; (3) the number of positive friends was found to be positively associated with the development of non-cognitive skills in adolescents, whereas the presence of negative friends correlated negatively with grit but positively with innovation; (4) social anxiety emerged as a significant mediating variable between parent–child relationships and adolescents’ non-cognitive skills, including innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; and (5) the mediating effect of the number of positive friends on the relationship between parent–child relationships and grit, innovation, conscientiousness, and hope was also found to be significant. Educational programs and family interventions should take these factors into account, providing a more holistic approach to supporting adolescent growth. Full article

Compelling evidence supports the foundational importance of early self-regulation (SR). It also supports parents in the home environment as having the foremost influence on early development. Yet, prevailing approaches to support early SR growth have tended to leverage early education and clinical settings. Partners in Play (PiP) was developed as a sustainable approach for parents to learn how and when to support children through experiences of self-regulation challenges in the home learning environment. This study reports the first randomised control trial evaluation of the PiP program, with 21 parent–child dyads (consisting of twelve girl–mother dyads, eight boy–mother dyads, and one boy–father dyad; mean child age = 4.12 years, SD = 0.65). Dyads were randomised to a PiP intervention group (n = 10), which entailed four online parent information sessions and four out-of-home guided practice dyadic play sessions across 8 weeks, or an active control group (n = 11). The primary outcome was parent autonomy support, and the secondary outcome was child SR. Results indicated a significant increase in parents’ use of autonomy support and a non-significant but moderate-sized effect on child SR. This innovative proof-of-concept program and evaluation provides a roadmap for effecting change in parental support during children’s play, to the prospective benefit of important abilities such as child SR. Analyses show promise for a parent-based model toward parent behaviour change and child SR improvement. Full article

A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization can add significant stress to the postpartum period. Parents experience isolation and uncertainty, which can affect their capacity to bond with their new baby. Understanding how stress is shaped by and changes following a NICU experience will help in developing supports for these families. We examined patterns of parenting stress over the first year of life following a NICU stay to better understand changes in stress, differences in maternal and paternal stress, and how medical and developmental variables impact parent stress. Parents of infants (n = 51) who had experienced a NICU hospitalization and met criteria for California’s High-Risk Infant Follow-Up program completed assessments at 6, 9, and 12 months. A comparison group (n = 38) from a historic dataset included parents of infants born full term without medical complications. NICU parents reported higher levels of parenting stress at 6 months, but not 12 months, with mothers and fathers reporting similar stress levels. Parenting-related stress was found to be relatively stable and consistent over this period. Among NICU parents, lower developmental level at 12 months was associated with more distress in interacting with their child. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring parenting stress following discharge from the NICU and developing interventions for supporting parents of NICU graduates showing developmental delays.
