Background: In a context of profound transformation within Public Administration, the growing generational diversity of the workforce poses critical challenges to organisational well-being. While ageism is a known risk, the intersectionality of age and gender—manifesting as gendered ageism—remains an under-explored area that can significantly undermine job satisfaction and employee health. Objective: This study aimed to explore the subjective work experience of public sector employees, specifically focusing on intergenerational relations and the impact of gendered ageism. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted involving 30 employees of the Italian Public Administration, recruited via purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews lasting approximately 38 min and analysed using a thematic analysis of elementary contexts via T-Lab software. Results: The analysis revealed four distinct thematic clusters positioned along two main factor axes (Individual/Organisation and Difficulties/Potential). The results show a dichotomy: while positive relationships with colleagues (Cluster 1) and the drive for change (Cluster 4) act as potential resources, the experience is marred by significant difficulties. These include organisational imbalances (Cluster 3) and, crucially, specific experiences of gendered ageism (Cluster 2), manifesting as stereotypes, pressure on women’s physical appearance, and exclusionary dynamics. Conclusions: The findings highlight that gendered ageism is a distinct stressor impacting workforce sustainability. Combating intersectional discrimination represents a strategic priority to safeguard well-being, retain skills, and build a healthy, resilient, and productive working environment. Full article

Crack detection plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and stability of infrastructure. Despite advancements in deep learning-based image analysis, accurately capturing multiscale crack features in complex environments remains challenging. These challenges arise from several factors, including the presence of cracks with varying sizes, shapes, and orientations, as well as the influence of environmental conditions such as lighting variations, surface textures, and noise. This study introduces DAH-YOLO (Dynamic-Attention-Haar-YOLO), an innovative model that integrates dynamic convolution, an attention-enhanced dynamic detection head, and Haar wavelet down-sampling to address these challenges. First, dynamic convolution is integrated into the YOLOv8 framework to adaptively capture complex crack features while simultaneously reducing computational complexity. Second, an attention-enhanced dynamic detection head is introduced to refine the model’s ability to focus on crack regions, facilitating the detection of cracks with varying scales and morphologies. Third, a Haar wavelet down-sampling layer is employed to preserve fine-grained crack details, enhancing the recognition of subtle and intricate cracks. Experimental results on three public datasets demonstrate that DAH-YOLO outperforms baseline models and state-of-the-art crack detection methods in terms of precision, recall, and mean average precision, while maintaining low computational complexity. Our findings provide a robust, efficient solution for automated crack detection, which has been successfully applied in real-world engineering scenarios with favorable outcomes, advancing the development of intelligent structural health monitoring. Quality control of drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health, particularly in densely populated urban environments. Environmental microbiological monitoring can complement conventional surveillance by providing deeper insights into the dissemination of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes within aquatic systems. In this study, we assessed the quality of wastewater and treated water from two urban water supply systems, representing the southern and northern regions of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, across four climatic seasons between 2024 and 2025. Fifteen water samples were analyzed, including raw water from Guaíba Lake and treated water collected from public distribution points. The Water Quality Index was calculated, microbiological indicators were quantified, and carbapenem resistance genes were detected using molecular assays. Most treated water samples complied with established bacteriological standards; however, the blaOXA-48-like gene was recurrently detected in both wastewater and treated water. No resistance genes were identified during the summer, whereas the blaVIM gene was detected exclusively in spring samples. The presence of carbapenem resistance genes in the absence of cultivable coliforms suggests the persistence of extracellular DNA or viable but non-culturable bacteria, highlighting limitations inherent to conventional microbiological monitoring. Integrating classical microbiological methods with molecular assays enables a more comprehensive assessment of water quality and strengthens evidence-based decision-making within a One Health framework. Cervical cancer (CC) remains a significant public health problem. Despite the availability of standard treatment strategies, chemotherapy-resistant tumors persist, highlighting the need to explore new therapeutic approaches or adjuvant strategies. This underscores the importance of preclinical in vivo models. Conventional models, such as murine xenografts, patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), and patient-derived organoids (PDOs), provide valuable biological relevance but are often time-consuming, costly, and resource-intensive. In this context, the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay represents a rapid, low-cost, and technically accessible in vivo platform. The CAM is a non-innervated, highly vascularized extraembryonic structure that provides a suitable environment for tumor generation from xenografts. However, despite the broad use of the CAM assay for tumor xenografts, standardized and comparative methodological optimizations specifically addressing technical variables for cervical cancer tumor induction remain limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to optimize the CAM assay for tumor generation using the HeLa and SiHa cell lines. The generated tumors are vascularized and exhibit Ki-67 expression. The CAM assay is an excellent short-term exploratory model based on developing chicken embryos for studying the developmental biology of cervical tumors, which would accelerate the preclinical investigation of new therapeutic molecules. Recent advancements in nanotechnology and materials science have enabled the development of magnetic photocatalysts with improved efficiency, stability, and reusability, offering a promising approach for wastewater treatment. The integration of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) into photocatalytic processes has gained significant attention as a sustainable method for addressing emerging pollutants—such as antibiotics and pharmaceutical compounds—which pose environmental and public health risks, including the proliferation of antibiotic resistance. Surface modification techniques, specifically applied to MNPs, are employed to enhance their photocatalytic performance by improving surface reactivity, reducing nanoparticle agglomeration, and increasing photocatalytic activity under both visible and ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. These modifications also facilitate the selective adsorption and degradation of target contaminants. Importantly, the modified nanoparticles retain their magnetic properties, allowing for facile separation and reuse in multiple treatment cycles via external magnetic fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in surface-modified MNPs for wastewater treatment, with a focus on their physicochemical properties, surface modification strategies, and effectiveness in the removal of antibiotics from aqueous environments. Furthermore, the review discusses advantages over conventional treatment methods, current limitations, and future research directions, emphasizing the potential of this technology for sustainable and efficient water purification. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main type of liver cancer and one of the malignancies with the highest mortality rates worldwide. HCC is associated with diverse etiological factors including alcohol use, viral infections, fatty liver disease, and liver cirrhosis (a major risk factor for HCC). Unfortunately, many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease and receive palliative treatment only. Therefore, early markers of HCC and novel therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. The endocannabinoid system is involved in various physiological processes such as motor coordination, emotional control, learning and memory, neuronal development, antinociception, and immunological processes. Interestingly, endocannabinoids modulate signaling pathways involved in cell survival, proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and immune response. Consistently, several cannabinoids have demonstrated potential antitumor properties in experimental models. The participation of metabotropic and ionotropic cannabinoid receptors in the biological effects of cannabinoids has been extensively described. In addition, cannabinoids interact with other targets, including several ion channels. Notably, several ion channels targeted by cannabinoids are involved in inflammation, proliferation, and apoptosis in liver diseases, including HCC. In this literature review, we describe and discuss both the endocannabinoid system and exogenous phytocannabinoids, such as cannabidiol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, along with their canonical receptors, as well as the cannabidiol-targeted ion channels and their role in liver cancer and its preceding liver diseases. The cannabidiol-ion channel association is an extraordinary opportunity in liver cancer prevention and therapy, with potential implications for several environments that are for the benefit of cancer patients, including sociocultural, public health, and economic systems. Background/Objectives: Poor dietary habits are a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the leading cause of mortality worldwide. To promote healthier eating, governments and stakeholders have implemented various nutrition policies, including front-of-pack nutrition labeling (FOPNL). The Choices International Foundation (Choices), through its criteria, supports these efforts through its standardized nutrient profiling system (NPS). Originally developed to underpin a positive FOPNL logo, in 2021, the criteria were expanded into a globally oriented five-level profiling system covering 23 basic and 10 discretionary food groups, addressing key nutrients such as trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, and energy. To ensure continued scientific relevance, the Choices criteria are periodically reviewed by an independent International Scientific Committee (ISC). Methods: This paper presents the 2025 revision of the Choices criteria, focusing on priority areas identified through stakeholder consultation and recent scientific developments. Results: Key updates include the introduction of nutrient-based equivalence criteria for plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy, based on protein and selected micronutrient thresholds. Non-sugar sweeteners (NSSs) were newly included as a factor that lowers a product’s health classification and makes it ineligible for a positive FOPNL. Additionally, the industrially produced trans-fatty acid (iTFA) criteria were revised and aligned with the latest World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, improving both technical feasibility and policy coherence. While options for incorporating whole-grain and micronutrient criteria were explored, these were not included in the current revision. Conclusions: The 2025 update system enhances the scientific rigor, policy alignment, and global applicability of the Choices system. By providing a harmonized and evidence-based tool, it aims to support national policies that foster healthier food environments and, ultimately, improve public health outcomes worldwide. Full article

Background/Objectives: Bovine mastitis, a significant global concern in dairy farming, results in substantial economic losses and poses considerable risks to both animal and human health. With the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in mastitis pathogens, the potential for resistant infections to spread from livestock to humans and the environment is becoming a critical public health issue. This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on antimicrobial resistance in pathogens causing bovine mastitis and examines it from a One Health perspective, encompassing animal, human, and environmental interfaces. Results: By examining the complex interplay among animal, human, and environmental health, we highlight key factors that drive resistance, including the overuse of antimicrobials, poor farm management, and environmental contamination. We also discuss innovative strategies, such as enhanced surveillance, pathogen-specific diagnostics, alternatives to antimicrobials, and sustainable farm practices, that can mitigate the emergence of resistance. Key knowledge gaps include a limited understanding of antimicrobial residues, resistant pathogens, and gene transmission pathways and inconsistent implementation of antimicrobial stewardship practices. Conclusions: This review emphasizes the need for a coordinated, multidisciplinary effort to reduce the burden of AMR in bovine mastitis pathogens, ensuring the continued efficacy of antimicrobials and safeguarding public health through responsible management and policy interventions. The ubiquity of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has raised significant concerns, yet their potential impacts on human health are not fully elucidated. This study aimed to quantify human exposure to MPs in feces and evaluate their associations with oxidative stress and cardiopulmonary function. A panel study was conducted in 16 male college students with three-round visits. Fecal MPs were quantified using infrared micro-spectroscopy, and health effects were assessed through urinary biomarkers of oxidative damage (MDA and 8-OHdG) and cardiopulmonary function tests. Associations between MP exposure and health outcomes were analyzed using linear mixed-effect models. We found that fecal MP amount across 48 samples from 16 participants showed high intra-individual variation and poor reproducibility (ICCs < 0.4). MPs in feces were predominantly identified as sheets and fragments in the 100–200 μm size range, with polyamide (PA), polyester, polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene as the primary polymer types. Significant relationships were observed between fecal MP amount and oxidative damage biomarkers. Each one-unit increase in MPs corresponded to a 0.827 increase in MDA (95% CI: 0.116, 1.54) and a 1.11 increase in 8-OHdG (95% CI: 0.235, 1.98), with fibrous shapes and specific polymers (PE and PA) being the primary drivers. No significant associations were found between MP exposure and lung function or blood pressure. These findings indicated that MP exposure was significantly linked to increased oxidative damage, highlighting a pressing public health concern regarding their subclinical biological effects. Even though environmental health and climate change are rapidly intensifying the severity of determinants of disease and inequity, training for health professionals in these areas remains fragmented across Europe. To address this gap, the European Medical Association (EMA), in collaboration with the European Network on Climate and Health Education (ENCHE), the International Network on Public Health and Environment Tracking (INPHET) and University College London, convened a one-day hybrid roundtable in London on 17 September 2025, focused on “Preparing Health Professionals for Environmental Health and Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe”. The programme combined keynote presentations on global and European policy, health economics and curriculum design with three disease-focused roundtables (respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological conditions), each examining the following topics: (A) climate and environment as preventable causes of disease; (B) healthcare as a source of environmental harm; and (C) capacity building through education and training. Contributors highlighted how environmental epidemiology, community-based prevention programmes and sustainable clinical practice can be integrated into teaching, illustrating models from respiratory, cardiovascular, surgical and neurological care. EU-level speakers outlined the policy framework (European Green Deal, Zero Pollution Action Plan and forthcoming global health programme) and tools through which professional and scientific societies can both inform and benefit from European action on environment and health. Discussions converged on persistent obstacles, including patchy national commitments to decarbonising healthcare, isolated innovations that are not scaled and curricula that do not yet embed sustainability in examinable clinical competencies. The conference concluded with proposals to develop an operational education package on environmental and climate health; map and harmonise core competencies across undergraduate, postgraduate and Continuing -professional-development pathways; and establish a permanent EMA-led working group to co-produce a broader position paper with professional and scientific societies. This conference report summarises the main messages and is intended as a bridge between practice-based experience and a formal EMA position on environmental-health training in Europe. Full article

Workers’ exposure to silica dust is a global occupational and public health concern and is particularly prevalent in Southern Africa, mainly because of inadequate dust control measures. It is worsened by the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, which exacerbates tuberculosis and other occupational lung diseases. The prevalence of silicosis in the region ranges from 9 to 51%; however, silica dust exposure levels and controls, especially in the informal mining sector, particularly in artisanal small-scale mines (ASMs), leave much to be desired. This is important because silicosis is incurable and can only be eliminated by preventing worker exposure. Additionally, several studies have indicated inadequate occupational health and safety policies, weak inspection systems, inadequate monitoring and control technologies, and inadequate occupational health and hygiene skills. Furthermore, there is a near-absence of silica dust analysis laboratories in southern Africa, except in South Africa. This protocol aims to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of respirable dust and respirable crystalline silica dust exposure evaluation and control methodology for the mining industry. The study will entail testing the effectiveness of current dust control measures for controlling microscale particles using various exposure dose metrics, such as mass, number, and lung surface area concentrations. This will be achieved using a portable Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR) (Nanozen Industries Inc., Burnaby, BC, Canada), the Nanozen DustCount, which measures both the mass and particle size distribution. The surface area concentration will be analysed by inputting the particle size distribution (PSD) results into the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry Model (MPPD) to estimate the retained and cleared doses. The MPPD will help us understand the sub-micron dust deposition and the reduction rate using the controls. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed approach has never been used elsewhere or in our settings. The proposed approach will reduce dependence on highly skilled individuals, reduce the turnaround sampling and analysis time, and provide a reference for regional harmonised occupational exposure limit (OEL) guidelines as a guiding document on how to meet occupational health, safety and environment (OHSE) requirements in ASM settings. Therefore, the outcome of this study will influence policy reforms and protect hundreds of thousands of employees currently working without any form of exposure prevention or protection. Full article

Background: Tribulus terrestris (Tt) is a popular herbal supplement marketed to enhance fitness performance, despite inconclusive evidence regarding its efficacy and safety. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of TT use, awareness, and motivations for its use among recreational athletes in Italy, helping to address the lack of empirical data describing who actually uses Tt, for what purposes, and with what behavioral risks. Methods: A cross-sectional anonymous survey was administered between May and October 2024 across Italian gyms and fitness clubs using Microsoft Forms. A total of 696 individuals initiated the questionnaire; after removal of duplicate, incomplete and ineligible entries, 510 responses were analyzed. Two indicators of Tt consumption were assessed: ever use and current use, with the latter designated as the primary outcome. A multivariable logistic regression evaluated predictors of current Tt use, entering sex, age category (18–24, 25–34, 35–44, ≥45 years), and motivation for supplement consumption. Results: Current Tt use was reported by 7.8% of respondents, while 10.5% declared ever using a Tt-containing product. Motivation was the only independent predictor of Tt consumption (p = 0.012). Individuals reporting performance enhancement as their primary motivation were markedly more likely to currently use Tt, compared with those using supplements for other purposes (adjusted OR ≈ 18.5; p = 0.008). Neither sex (p = 0.918) nor age category (p = 0.519) significantly predicted Tt use. Admission of anabolic steroid use was infrequent but was linked to online purchasing from potentially unregulated sources. Conclusions: Tt consumption in fitness settings is driven predominantly by performance-oriented expectations rather than demographic characteristics. The observed discrepancy between consumer beliefs and scientific evidence suggests a pressing need for educational interventions and regulatory vigilance in sports nutrition. Public health policies should focus on improving label literacy, strengthening consumer protection, and countering misinformation within supplement marketing environments. Full article

Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a significant threat to public health. The Tumen River Basin is located at the junction of China, North Korea and Russia, whose warm climate and favorable ecological environment are suitable for the growth and reproduction of ticks. At the same time, the cattle industry in this region is highly developed, with cattle serving as the primary economic source for the area. This study performed an epidemiological investigation and analysis of pathogens carried by ticks and cattle in the Tumen River basin. A total of 913 ticks and 247 bovine blood samples were collected from seven cities primarily focused on cattle farming in the Tumen River basin. Morphological and molecular biological identification of ticks was carried out to determine the distribution of ticks and their pathogens in the region. Through the detection of pathogens carried by cattle blood samples in the surrounding area, the correlation with tick distribution was confirmed. The species and distribution of ticks of different genders and in different collection environments, and the infection of pathogens in bovine blood samples were statistically analyzed. The results showed that the 913 ticks had 5 species, including Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis concinna, Haemaphysalis japonica, Dermacentor silvarum and Ixodes persulcatus. Three pathogens, Babesia ovata, Theileria orientalis and Theileria sinensis, were detected in the blood samples of vector ticks and cattle. These results provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the Tumen River basin. Full article

Arboviral diseases are emerging public health challenges in Burkina Faso, largely driven by the proliferation of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the environment. Effective surveillance of arbovirus circulation is critical to inform interventions. From August 2022 to June 2023, we implemented a comprehensive entomological surveillance platform in five sectors of Bobo-Dioulasso. Surveillance methods included oviposition traps to collect eggs, larval surveys in some concessions per sector conducted bimonthly, and adult mosquito collections using BG-Sentinel traps and Prokopack aspirators. Mosquito samples colonized by Ae. aegypti were identified morphologically, confirmed by conventional PCR, and screened by RT-PCR for dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), yellow fever (YFV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. Molecular analysis detected dengue virus and yellow fever virus in mosquito pools from sector 22 and chikungunya virus in sectors 9 and 26; no Zika virus was found. This study demonstrates the successful establishment of an integrated entomological surveillance platform capable of capturing the spatial and temporal dynamics of arboviral vectors and virus circulation in Bobo-Dioulasso. The identification of active dengue and chikungunya transmission underlines the urgent need for sustained vector monitoring and targeted control strategies. Our approach provides a scalable model for arboviral disease surveillance and epidemic preparedness in West African urban settings. Full article

Background/Objectives: Even with solid proof of its benefits for cardiovascular health and metabolism, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) in Spain has noticeably declined in recent years. The socioeconomic changes occurring in recent decades have prompted shifts in cooking habits and in how food is socially experienced, particularly among children and adolescents. The MD is more than just food: it is a cultural tradition and a lifestyle, rich in food and cooking skills, and food wisdom passed down over generations. When these practices fade, it affects both health and the environment, making them vital components in strengthening support for food knowledge, cooking abilities, and a healthier lifestyle. Considering these shifting dietary patterns and the growing need for targeted educational strategies, the present study aimed to investigate the association between cooking skills, MD-related health literacy, and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet across different developmental stages: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in a sample of the Spanish population. Additionally, a secondary objective was to identify potential critical windows for intervention based on the strength of these associations. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 832 Spanish participants grouped by age: children and early adolescents (n = 408), older adolescents (n = 136), and adults (n = 288). Cooking skills were assessed using CooC11 for children and FCSk for older groups. Adults also completed Lit_MEDiet to assess MD-related health literacy. Adherence was measured with KIDMED (children/adolescents) and MEDAS (adults). Spearman correlations and standardized linear regressions were used. All statistical tests were two-sided, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: In children, no significant association was found between cooking skills (CooC11) and KIDMED scores (β = 0.008; p = 0.875). Among adolescents, a strong positive association emerged between FCSk and KIDMED (β = 0.313; p < 0.001; ρ = 0.371), indicating a large, standardized effect and suggesting that this stage is particularly sensitive to food skills. In adults (18+), both food and cooking skills (FCSk) (β = 0.189; p = 0.001) and MD-related health literacy (Lit_MEDiet) (β = 0.187; p = 0.004) were moderately associated with MEDAS scores. Conclusions: These findings suggest that mid-adolescence could represent a favourable developmental window where food skills may hold potential to influence positive dietary behaviours. Regarding adults, the results indicate that combining practical and educational components appears to beneficial for dietary quality. Overall, this study supports the relevance of age-tailored public health strategies to potentially enhance long-term adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Full article
