Demand Side Management (DSM) plays a crucial role in modern energy systems, enabling more efficient use of energy resources and contributing to the sustainability of the power grid. This study examines DSM strategies within a multi-environment context encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, with a focus on diverse appliance types that exhibit distinct operational characteristics and user preferences. Initially, a single-objective optimization approach using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) is employed to minimize the total energy cost under a real Time-of-Use (ToU) pricing scheme. This heuristic method allows for the effective scheduling of appliance operations while factoring in their unique characteristics such as power consumption, usage duration, and user-defined operational flexibility. This study extends the optimization problem to a multi-objective framework that incorporates the minimization of CO2 emissions under a real annual energy mix while also accounting for user discomfort. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is utilized for this purpose, providing a Pareto-optimal set of solutions that balances these competing objectives. The inclusion of multiple objectives ensures a comprehensive assessment of DSM strategies, aiming to reduce environmental impact and enhance user satisfaction. Additionally, this study monitors the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) to evaluate the impact of DSM strategies on load balancing and grid stability. It also analyzes the impact of considering different periods of the year with the associated ToU hourly schedule and CO2 emissions hourly profile. A key innovation of this research is the integration of detailed, category-specific metrics that enable the disaggregation of costs, emissions, and user discomfort across residential, commercial, and industrial appliances. This granularity enables stakeholders to implement tailored strategies that align with specific operational goals and regulatory compliance. Also, the emphasis on a user discomfort indicator allows us to explore the flexibility available in such DSM mechanisms. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-objective optimization approach in achieving significant cost savings that may reach 20% for industrial applications, while the order of magnitude of the trade-offs involved in terms of emissions reduction, improvement in discomfort, and PAR reduction is quantified for different frameworks. The outcomes not only underscore the efficacy of applying advanced optimization frameworks to real-world problems but also point to pathways for future research in smart energy management. This comprehensive analysis highlights the potential of advanced DSM techniques to enhance the sustainability and resilience of energy systems while also offering valuable policy implications. In response to the escalating climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has become a top priority for both the public and private sectors. The pavement industry plays a key role in this transition, offering innovative technologies that minimize environmental impacts without compromising performance. Among these, the incorporation of recycled tire rubber and warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additives represents a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption and resource depletion in road construction. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental performance of an asphalt pavement incorporating recycled rubber and a WMA additive—referred to as R-W asphalt—against a conventional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement. The analysis follows the ISO 14040/44 standards, covering material production, transport, construction, and maintenance. Two service-life scenarios are considered: one assuming equivalent durability and another with a five-year extension for the R-W pavement. The results demonstrate environmental impact reductions of up to 57%, with average savings ranging from 32% to 52% across key impact categories such as climate change, land use, and resource use. These benefits are primarily attributed to lower production temperatures and extended maintenance intervals. The findings underscore the potential of R-W asphalt as a cleaner engineering solution aligned with circular economy principles and climate mitigation goals. Full article

Currently, various pruning strategies including different methods and distribution types are commonly used to reduce the number of FLOPs and parameters in deep learning models. However, their impact on actual energy savings remains insufficiently studied, particularly in resource-constrained settings. To address this, we introduce PruneEnergyAnalyzer, an open-source Python tool designed to evaluate the energy efficiency of pruned models. Starting from the unpruned model, the tool calculates the energy savings achieved by pruned versions provided by the user, and generates comparative visualizations based on previously applied pruning hyperparameters such as method, distribution type (PD), compression ratio (CR), and batch size. These visual outputs enable the identification of the most favorable pruning configurations in terms of FLOPs, parameter count, and energy consumption. As a demonstration, we evaluated the tool with 180 models generated from three architectures, five pruning distributions, three pruning methods, and four batch sizes, using another previous library (e.g. FlexiPrune). This experiment revealed the significant impact of the network architecture on Energy Reduction, the non-linearity between FLOPs savings and energy savings, as well as between parameter reduction and energy efficiency. It also showed that the batch size strongly influences the energy consumption of the pruned model. Therefore, this tool can support researchers in making pruning policy decisions that also take into account the energy efficiency of the pruned model. Full article

Electric buses (EBs) are increasingly adopted for their environmental and operational benefits, yet their real-world efficiency is influenced by climate, route characteristics, and auxiliary energy demands. While most existing research identifies winter as the most energy-intensive season due to cabin heating and reduced battery performance, this study presents a contrasting perspective based on a three-year longitudinal analysis of the LYMMO fleet in Orlando, Florida—a subtropical U.S. region. The findings reveal that summer is the most energy-intensive season, primarily due to sustained HVAC usage driven by high ambient temperatures—a seasonal pattern rarely reported in the current literature and a key regional contribution. Additionally, idling time exceeds driving time across all seasons, with HVAC usage during idling emerging as the dominant contributor to total energy consumption. To mitigate these inefficiencies, a proxy-based HVAC energy estimation method and an optimization model were developed, incorporating ambient temperature and peak passenger load. This approach achieved up to 24% energy savings without compromising thermal comfort. Results validated through non-parametric statistical testing support operational strategies such as idling reduction, HVAC control, and seasonally adaptive scheduling, offering practical pathways to improve EB efficiency in warm-weather transit systems. An efficient integrated energy system (IES) can enhance the potential of building energy conservation and carbon mitigation. However, imbalances between user-side demand and supply side output present formidable challenges to the operational dispatch of building energy systems. To mitigate heat rejection and improve dispatch optimization, an integrated building energy system incorporating waste heat recovery via an absorption heat pump based on the flow temperature model is adopted. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the correlation among heat pump operational strategies, thermal comfort, and the dynamic thermal storage capacity of piping network systems. The optimization calculations and comparative analyses were conducted across five cases on typical season days via the CPLEX solver with MATLAB R2018a. The simulation results indicate that the operational modes of absorption heat pump reduced the costs by 4.4–8.5%, while the absorption rate of waste heat increased from 37.02% to 51.46%. Additionally, the utilization ratio of battery and thermal storage units decreased by up to 69.82% at most after considering the pipeline thermal inertia and thermal comfort, thus increasing the system’s energy-saving ability and reducing the pressure of energy storage equipment, ultimately increasing the scheduling flexibility of the integrated building energy system. Optimizing Energy Performance of Phase-Change Material-Enhanced Building Envelopes Through Novel Performance Indicators

Over recent decades, phase-change materials (PCMs) have gained prominence as latent-heat thermal energy storage systems in building envelopes because of their high energy density. However, only PCMs that complete a full daily charge–discharge cycle can deliver meaningful energy and carbon-emission savings. This simulation study introduces a methodology that simultaneously optimizes PCM integration for storage efficiency, indoor thermal comfort, and energy savings. Two new indicators are proposed: overall storage efficiency (ECn), which consolidates heating and cooling-efficiency ratios into a single value, and the performance factor (PF), which quantifies the PCM’s effectiveness in maintaining thermal comfort. Using EnergyPlus v8.9 coupled with DesignBuilder, a residential ASHRAE 90.1 mid-rise apartment was modeled in six warm-temperate (Cfb) European cities for the summer period from June 1 to August 31. Four paraffin PCMs (RT-22/25/28/31 HC, 20 mm thickness) were tested under natural and controlled ventilation strategies, with windows opening 50% when outdoor air was at least 2 °C cooler than indoors. Simulation outputs were validated against experimental cubicle data, yielding a mean absolute indoor temperature error ≤ 4.5%, well within the ±5% tolerance commonly accepted for building thermal simulations. The optimum configuration—RT-25 HC with temperature-controlled ventilation—achieved PF = 1.0 (100% comfort compliance) in all six cities and delivered summer cooling-energy savings of up to 3376 kWh in Paris, the highest among the locations studied. Carbon-emission reductions reached 2254 kg CO2-e year−1, and static payback periods remained below the assumed 50-year building life at a per kg PCM cost of USD 1. The ECn–PF framework, therefore, provides a transparent basis for selecting cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-carbon PCM solutions in warm-temperate buildings. Full article

Industrial robots are undergoing a transformative shift as Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven and bio-inspired control strategies unlock new levels of precision, adaptability, and multi-dimensional sustainability aligned with Industry 5.0 (energy efficiency, material circularity, and life-cycle emissions). This systematic review analyzes 160 peer-reviewed industrial robotics control studies (2023–2025), including an expanded bio-inspired/human-centric subset, to evaluate: (1) the dominant and emerging control methodologies; (2) the transformative role of digital twins and 5G-enabled connectivity; and (3) the persistent technical, ethical, and environmental challenges. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, the study employs a rigorous methodology, focusing on adaptive control, deep reinforcement learning (DRL), human–robot collaboration (HRC), and quantum-inspired algorithms. The key findings highlight up to 30% latency reductions in real-time optimization, up to 22% efficiency gains through digital twins, and up to 25% energy savings from bio-inspired designs (all percentage ranges are reported relative to the comparator baselines specified in the cited sources). However, critical barriers remain, including scalability limitations (with up to 40% higher computational demands) and cybersecurity vulnerabilities (with up to 20% exposure rates). The convergence of AI, bio-inspired systems, and quantum computing is poised to enable sustainable, autonomous, and human-centric robotics, yet requires standardized safety frameworks and hybrid architectures to fully support the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0. This review offers a strategic roadmap for future research and industrial adoption, emphasizing human-centric design, ethical frameworks, and circular-economy principles to address global manufacturing challenges. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for the largest share of energy consumption in European Union (EU) buildings, representing approximately 40% of the final energy use and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Latent thermal energy storage (LTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance HVAC efficiency. This review systematically examines the role of latent thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs) in optimizing HVAC performance to align with EU climate targets, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). By analyzing advancements in PCM-enhanced HVAC systems across residential and commercial sectors, this study identifies critical pathways for reducing energy demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and accelerating the transition to nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEBs). The review categorizes PCM technologies into organic, inorganic, and eutectic systems, evaluating their integration into thermal storage tanks, airside free cooling units, heat pumps, and building envelopes. Empirical data from case studies demonstrate consistent energy savings of 10–30% and peak load reductions of 20–50%, with Mediterranean climates achieving superior cooling load management through paraffin-based PCMs (melting range: 18–28 °C) compared to continental regions. Policy-driven initiatives, such as Germany’s renewable integration mandates for public buildings, are shown to amplify PCM adoption rates by 40% compared to regions lacking regulatory incentives. Despite these benefits, barriers persist, including fragmented EU standards, life cycle cost uncertainties, and insufficient training. This work bridges critical gaps between PCM research and EU policy implementation, offering a roadmap for scalable deployment. By contextualizing technical improvement within regulatory and economic landscapes, the review provides strategic recommendations to achieve the EU’s 2030 emissions reduction targets and 2050 climate neutrality goals. Modern utilities face unprecedented pressures as trends in digital transformation and democratized energy choice empower consumers to engage in peak shaving, flexible load management, and adopt grid automation and intelligence solutions. A powerful confluence of architectural, technological, and socio-economic forces is transforming the U.S. electricity market, triggering significant changes in electricity production, transmission, and consumption. Utilities are embracing digital twins and repurposed Utility 2.0 concepts—distributed energy resources, microgrids, innovative electricity market designs, real-time automated monitoring, smart meters, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced data and predictive analytics—to foster operational flexibility and market efficiency. This analysis qualitatively evaluates how digitalization, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and adaptive strategies to mitigate rebound effects collectively advance smart duck curve management. By leveraging digital platforms for real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, utilities can optimize energy flows and make data-driven decisions. BESS technologies capture surplus renewable energy during off-peak periods and discharge it when demand spikes, thereby smoothing grid fluctuations. This review explores the benefits of targeted digital transformation, BESSs, and managed rebound effects in mitigating the duck curve problem, ensuring that energy efficiency gains translate into actual savings. Furthermore, this integrated approach not only reduces energy wastage and lowers operational costs but also enhances grid resilience, establishing a robust framework for sustainable energy management in an evolving market landscape. This paper proposes an energy-efficient current control strategy for drive modules of permanent magnetic actuators (PMAs) to reduce the cost and volume of DC-link capacitors. The drive module of the PMA does not receive the input power from an external power source during operation. Instead, the externally charged DC-link capacitors are used as internal backup power sources to guarantee the reliable operation even in the case of an emergency. Therefore, it is important to use the charged energy efficiently within the limited DC-link capacitors. However, conventional control strategies using a voltage open loop have trouble reducing the energy waste. This is because the drive module with the voltage open loop uses unnecessary energy even after the PMA mover has finished its movement. To figure it out, the proposed control strategy adopts a current control loop to save energy even if the displacement of the PMA mover is unknown. In addition, the proposed strategy can ensure the successful operation of the PMA by using the driving force analysis. The efficacy of the proposed strategy is verified through the experimental test. It would be expected that the proposed strategy can reduce the cost and volume of the PMA drive system. Full article

Rail transit as a high-energy consumption field urgently requires the adoption of clean energy innovations to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the transition to new energy applications. As an energy-saving fluid machinery, the ejector exhibits significant application potential and academic value within this field. This paper reviewed the recent advances, technical challenges, research hotspots, and future development directions of ejector applications in rail transit, aiming to address gaps in existing reviews. (1) In waste heat recovery, exhaust heat is utilized for propulsion in vehicle ejector refrigeration air conditioning systems, resulting in energy consumption being reduced by 12~17%. (2) In vehicle pneumatic pressure reduction systems, the throttle valve is replaced with an ejector, leading to an output power increase of more than 13% and providing support for zero-emission new energy vehicle applications. (3) In hydrogen supply systems, hydrogen recirculation efficiency exceeding 68.5% is achieved in fuel cells using multi-nozzle ejector technology. (4) Ejector-based active flow control enables precise ± 20 N dynamic pantograph lift adjustment at 300 km/h. However, current research still faces challenges including the tendency toward subcritical mode in fixed geometry ejectors under variable operating conditions, scarcity of application data for global warming potential refrigerants, insufficient stability of hydrogen recycling under wide power output ranges, and thermodynamic irreversibility causing turbulence loss. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on developing dynamic intelligent control technology based on machine learning, designing adjustable nozzles and other structural innovations, optimizing multi-system efficiency through hybrid architectures, and investigating global warming potential refrigerants. These strategies will facilitate the evolution of ejector technology toward greater intelligence and efficiency, thereby supporting the green transformation and energy conservation objectives of rail transit. With the increasing integration of renewable energy and smart technologies in residential energy systems, proactive household energy management (HEM) have become critical for reducing costs, enhancing grid stability, and achieving sustainability goals. This study proposes a ultra-short-term forecasting-driven proactive energy consumption optimization strategy that integrates advanced forecasting models with multi-objective scheduling algorithms. By leveraging deep learning techniques like Graph Attention Network (GAT) architectures, the system predicts ultra-short-term household load profiles with high accuracy, addressing the volatility of residential energy use. Then, based on the predicted data, a comprehensive consideration of electricity costs, user comfort, carbon emission pricing, and grid load balance indicators is undertaken. This study proposes an enhanced mixed-integer optimization algorithm to collaboratively optimize multiple objective functions, thereby refining appliance scheduling, energy storage utilization, and grid interaction. Case studies demonstrate that integrating photovoltaic (PV) power generation forecasting and load forecasting models into a home energy management system, and adjusting the original power usage schedule based on predicted PV output and water heater demand, can effectively reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions without compromising user engagement in optimization. A novel approach to managing domestic heating systems through IoT technologies is introduced in this paper. The system optimizes energy consumption by dynamically adapting to electricity and fuel price fluctuations while maintaining user comfort. Integrating smart devices significantly reduce energy costs and offer a favorable payback period, positioning the solution as both sustainable and economically viable. Efficient heating management is increasingly critical amid growing energy and environmental concerns. This strategy uses IoT devices to collect real-time data on prices, consumption, and user preferences. Based on this data, the system adjusts heating settings intelligently to balance comfort and cost savings. IoT connectivity manages continuous monitoring and dynamic optimization in response to changing conditions. This study includes a real-case comparison between a conventional central heating system and an IoT-managed electric radiator setup. By applying automation rules linked to energy pricing and user habits, the system enhances energy efficiency, especially in cold climates. The economic evaluation shows that using low-cost IoT devices yields meaningful savings and achieves equipment payback within approximately three years. The results demonstrate the system’s effectiveness, demonstrating that smart, adaptive heating solutions can cut energy expenses without sacrificing comfort, while offering environmental and financial benefits. In recent years, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have increased at the fastest rates ever recorded. This is a trend that contradicts global efforts to stabilise greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations and prevent long-term climate change. Over 90% of global transport relies on oil-based fuels. The continued use of diesel and petrol raises concerns related to oil costs, supply security, GHG emissions, and the release of air pollutants and volatile organic compounds. This study explored electric vehicle (EV) charging networks by assessing environmental impacts through GHG and petroleum savings, developing dynamic pricing strategies, and forecasting infrastructure needs. A substantial dataset of over 259,000 EV charging records from Palo Alto, California, was statistically analysed. Machine learning models were applied to generate insights that support sustainable and economically viable electric transport planning for policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders. Findings indicate that GHG and gasoline savings are directly proportional to energy consumed, with conversion rates of 0.42 kg CO2 and 0.125 gallons per kilowatt-hour (kWh), respectively. Additionally, dynamic pricing strategies such as a 20% discount on underutilised days and a 15% surcharge during peak hours are proposed to optimise charging behaviour and improve station efficiency. Evaluating Acoustic vs. AI-Based Satellite Leak Detection in Aging US Water Infrastructure: A Cost and Energy Savings Analysis

The aging water distribution system in the United States, constructed mainly during the 1970s with some pipes dating back 125 years, is experiencing significant deterioration leading to substantial water losses. Along with the potential for water loss savings, improvements in the distribution system by using leak detection technologies can create net energy and cost savings. In this work, a new framework has been presented to calculate the economic level of leakage within water supply and distribution systems for two primary leak detection technologies (acoustic vs. satellite). In this work, a new framework is presented to calculate the economic level of leakage (ELL) within water supply and distribution systems to support smart infrastructure in smart cities. A case study focused using water audit data from Atlanta, Georgia, compared the costs of two leak mitigation technologies: conventional acoustic leak detection and artificial intelligence–assisted satellite leak detection technology, which employs machine learning algorithms to identify potential leak signatures from satellite imagery. The ELL results revealed that conducting one survey would be optimum for an acoustic survey, whereas the method suggested that it would be expensive to utilize satellite-based leak detection technology. However, results for cumulative financial analysis over a 3-year period for both technologies revealed both to be economically favorable with conventional acoustic leak detection technology generating higher net economic benefits of USD 2.4 million, surpassing satellite detection by 50%. A broader national analysis was conducted to explore the potential benefits of US water infrastructure mirroring the exemplary conditions of Germany and The Netherlands. Achieving similar infrastructure leakage index (ILI) values could result in annual cost savings of $4–$4.8 billion and primary energy savings of 1.6–1.9 TWh. These results demonstrate the value of combining economic modeling with advanced leak detection technologies to support sustainable, cost-efficient water infrastructure strategies in urban environments, contributing to more sustainable smart living outcomes.
