V. S. Naipaul’s 1975 novel Guerrillas is the earliest example of Caribbean fiction that purports to provide a realistic depiction of Trinidad’s brief but historically significant Black Power movement. Naipaul was an Indo-Trinidadian expatriate who immigrated to the U.K. in 1950 and remained there until his death in 2018. He was famously Anglophilic; and given his notorious insistence that culturally the West Indies are derivative, not creative, it is unsurprising that Naipaul depicts Black Power as an empty form that Trinidad and Great Britain import to their detriment from the U.S. In its fictionalization of the story of a real-life figure on the periphery of Black Power, Guerrillas presents Black Power’s presence in Trinidad and the UK as a failure and a sham. My article traces Naipaul’s transformation of what was originally a journalistic account into his novel Guerrillas in order to highlight the tendentiousness of his representation of Trinidadian Black Power. The plot of the novel repurposes the crux of Naipaul’s essay “The Killings in Trinidad” in which he reports how a Trinidadian Black Power poseur known as “Michael X” conspired in the January 1972 murder of a white woman named Gale Ann Benson. Crucial to Naipaul’s dismissal of Black Power as a derivative fiction, this article argues, is the fraudulent Michael X, himself a mimic man par excellence in his embodiment of Black Power as an empty and parodic form devoid of original content. I demonstrate how Naipaul’s marginalization of Caribbean Black Power depends on formal mimicry and on his selection of this marginal player/mimic man as representative of the movement in Trinidad. The diffusion of green energy technological innovation based on international green energy cooperation is a critical pathway to achieving global low-carbon emission reductions. However, few studies have considered the innovation diffusion pathways of green energy technologies under bilateral policy uncertainties. This paper constructs an evolutionary game model for the diffusion of green energy technological innovation in a complex network environment, with a focus on analyzing the impacts of key parameters such as policy spillover effects, technological heterogeneity, technical leakage risks, and free-riding risks on the equilibrium outcomes of evolutionary strategies. The results of the study are as follows: (1) Technological synergy and technological heterogeneity have a significant role in promoting the diffusion of green energy technological innovation, but when technological heterogeneity is too high, it is difficult for the two parties to find more common interests and areas of technological interaction, and the cooperative innovation will be turned into an empty shell that has a name but no reality. (2) Policy uncertainty has a significant impact on the diffusion of green energy technology innovation, and the specific impact depends on the type of policy, policy intensity, policy spillover effects, and other key parameters. (3) The risk of technological obsolescence has prompted countries to deeply participate in green energy international cooperation to realize the “curved road overtaking” of green energy technology based on technological locking and latecomer advantages; due to the existence of the phenomenon of “free-riding”, the logic of value creation based on win–win cooperation is replaced by the opportunism of “enjoying the benefits”, and cooperative innovation may be turned into a one-time “handshake agreement”. The existence of the risk of technology leakage can turn collaborative innovation into a “witch hunt” by the underdog against the overdog, and the diffusion process of green energy technology innovation is led in the wrong direction. Taking Jiaxiang Jizang’s (嘉祥吉藏, 549–623) statement that “grasses and trees possess Buddha-nature” (草木有佛性, cao mu you foxing) as an example of Early Chinese Madhyamaka ethics, I provide an analysis of the two main propositions of his claim and discuss the ethical significance thereof to highlight the characteristics of Early Chinese Madhyamaka ethics. Although the two propositions appear contradictory in a literal sense, differing criteria are employed in each to establish whether or not grasses and trees and sentient beings possess Buddha-nature—namely, dependent origination and emptiness in the first and non-attainment in the second. I also point out that the ethical significance of the first proposition exhibits a shift from ontology to moral awareness and then to moral disposition as the practitioner in moral accomplishment, while the approach of the second proposition is instead an ontological inquiry into the origins of morality, with an ethical outlook founded on the soteriological aspect of self-discipline. I conclude by showing that no single theory of Western ethics can be suitably applied to the Chinese Madhyamaka ethics of Jizang, as any such attempt would prove incompatible with his philosophical standpoint of non-attainment. We introduce a method for calculating the atomic forces of a molecular or extended system in an excited state described through the GW-BSE approach within the Tamm–Dancoff approximation. The derivative of the so-called excitonic Hamiltonian is obtained by finite differences and its application to the excited state is made possible through the use of suitable projectors. The scheme is implemented with the batch representation of the electron–hole amplitudes, allowing for avoiding sums over empty one-particle orbitals. The geometries of small excited molecules, namely, CO and CH2O, were in excellent agreement with the results from quantum chemistry methods. Full article

Study on the Characteristics of a Composite Power System with a Tip-Jet-Driven Rotor

Tip-jet helicopters operate by utilizing the reaction force generated by a high-speed tip jet, offering advantages such as a simplified and compact fuselage design and a reduction in empty weight by eliminating anti-torque balancing equipment. In tip-jet helicopter research, the composite power system is regarded as a crucial and bottleneck element. This study employs numerical simulations to comprehensively analyze the internal flow characteristics of the gas generator and tip-jet-driven rotor within the composite power system. Specifically, an in-depth investigation has been conducted on the influence laws of various parameters on the system characteristics. These parameters encompass the tip-jet-driven rotor speed, which takes on values of 50 rad/s, 80 rad/s, 100 rad/s, 120 rad/s, and 150 rad/s, the tip-jet-driven rotor length, measured at 1585 mm, 1785 mm, 1985 mm, 2185 mm, 2385 mm, 2585 mm, and 2785 mm, and the tip-jet-driven rotor nozzle area, which is specified by six values corresponding to multiples of the straight section area of the rotor’s internal channel, namely 0.25 times, 0.5 times, 0.75 times, 1 times, 1.25 times, and 1.5 times. The analysis of the obtained results indicates several significant relationships. Firstly, it is observed that the available moment exhibits a linear decrease as the tip-jet-driven rotor speed increases. Secondly, the maximum available moment is attained when the tip-jet-driven rotor length (L) satisfies the relationship L = Vr/2ω. Additionally, the maximum available power is achieved when the transport velocity of the tip-jet-driven rotor nozzle is precisely half of the relative velocity of the nozzle. Moreover, under the condition that the mass flow rate of the tip-jet-driven rotor nozzle remains constant, a positive correlation between the available moment and the reduction in the tip-jet-driven rotor nozzle area is noted. Paroxysmal explosive activity at Etna volcano (Italy) has become quite frequent over the last three decades, raising concerns with the civil protection authorities due to its significant impact on the local population, infrastructures, viability and air traffic. Between 4 July and 15 August 2024, during the tourist season peak when the local population doubles, Etna volcano gave rise to a sequence of six paroxysmal explosive events from the summit crater named Voragine. This is the oldest and largest of Etna’s four summit craters and normally only produces degassing, with the previous explosive sequences occurring in December 2015 and May 2016. In this paper, we use thermal images recorded by the monitoring system maintained by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV–OE), and an automatic procedure previously tested in order to automatically define the eruptive parameters of the six lava fountain episodes. These data allowed us to infer the eruptive processes and gain some insights on the evolution of the explosive sequences that are useful for hazard assessment. Specifically, our results lead to the hypothesis that the Voragine shallow storage has a capacity of ~12–15 Mm3, which was not completely emptied with the last two paroxysmal events. It is thus possible that one or two additional explosive paroxysmal events could occur in the future. It is noteworthy that an additional paroxysmal episode occurred at Voragine on 10 November 2024, after the submission of this paper, thus confirming our hypothesis. Full article

Cow behavior carries important health information. The timely and accurate detection of standing, grazing, lying, estrus, licking, fighting, and other behaviors is crucial for individual cow monitoring and understanding of their health status. In this study, a model called CAMLLA-YOLOv8n is proposed for Holstein cow behavior recognition. We use a hybrid data augmentation method to provide the model with rich Holstein cow behavior features and improve the YOLOV8n model to optimize the Holstein cow behavior detection results under challenging conditions. Specifically, we integrate the Coordinate Attention mechanism into the C2f module to form the C2f-CA module, which strengthens the expression of inter-channel feature information, enabling the model to more accurately identify and understand the spatial relationship between different Holstein cows’ positions, thereby improving the sensitivity to key areas and the ability to filter background interference. Secondly, the MLLAttention mechanism is introduced in the P3, P4, and P5 layers of the Neck part of the model to better cope with the challenges of Holstein cow behavior recognition caused by large-scale changes. In addition, we also innovatively improve the SPPF module to form the SPPF-GPE module, which optimizes small target recognition by combining global average pooling and global maximum pooling processing and enhances the model’s ability to capture the key parts of Holstein cow behavior in the environment. Given the limitations of traditional IoU loss in cow behavior detection, we replace CIoU loss with Shape–IoU loss, focusing on the shape and scale features of the Bounding Box, thereby improving the matching degree between the Prediction Box and the Ground Truth Box. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed CAMLLA-YOLOv8n algorithm, we conducted experiments on a self-constructed dataset containing 23,073 Holstein cow behavior instances. The experimental results show that, compared with models such as YOLOv3-tiny, YOLOv5n, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7-tiny, YOLOv8n, and YOLOv8s, the improved CAMLLA-YOLOv8n model achieved increases in Precision of 8.79%, 7.16%, 6.06%, 2.86%, 2.18%, and 2.69%, respectively, when detecting the states of Holstein cows grazing, standing, lying, licking, estrus, fighting, and empty bedding. Finally, although the Params and FLOPs of the CAMLLA-YOLOv8n model increased slightly compared with the YOLOv8n model, it achieved significant improvements of 2.18%, 1.62%, 1.84%, and 1.77% in the four key performance indicators of Precision, Recall, mAP@0.5, and mAP@0.5:0.95, respectively. This model, named CAMLLA-YOLOv8n, effectively meets the need for the accurate and rapid identification of Holstein cow behavior in actual agricultural environments. This research is significant for improving the economic benefits of farms and promoting the transformation of animal husbandry towards digitalization and intelligence. Full article

The moral status of soldiers as agent-instruments of polities has been long debated among Christians. Recognizing soldiers’ moral vulnerability, Stanley Hauerwas has argued for a pastoral rather than a missiological shape of what Oliver O’Donovan has called evangelical counter-praxis through a Christian’s participation in war. To reframe the complications of this dilemma, this essay argues that the Christian soldier has the potential to actively witness the love of Jesus Christ through a kenotic repudiation of one’s unwillingness to kill. Through an interpretation of Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence, a correspondence between the Christian soldier and the apostate-cum-martyr Fr. Rodrigues is arguable through an act of paradoxical faith in Jesus, where killing the enemy becomes an imitation of his self-emptying on the cross for the sake of others. Christian soldiers may find self-understanding, healing, and forgiveness by naming their acts truthfully with the intention to move through confession to gratitude and a deeper love for God and neighbor. In Brazilian Veneto (a heritage variety of Veneto spoken in several areas of Brazil), a stem alternation targets the plurals of masculine nominals ending in a consonant. While nominals with a word-final rhotic or nasal are pluralized by adding the masculine plural suffix /i/ ([bi't̑er][bi't̑eri] ‘glass’), pluralization in nominals with a final lateral involves deletion of the consonant (e.g., [ni'sol][ni'soi] ‘bedsheet’). I argue that these differences stem from word-final laterals having a distinct representation from rhotics and nasals: while the latter are represented as codas, the former are represented as onsets of empty-headed syllables. Based on a corpus analysis, I show that (a) speakers’ productions of these plurals are stable, and (b) other patterns of pluralization (namely, in monosyllables and words with final stress on a CV syllable) are consistent with the proposal. In addition, the behaviour of laterals with respect to resyllabification, metaphony and intervocalic consonant deletion further suggest that laterals are represented as onsets word-finally. The concepts of emptiness and nothingness are extremely important in Eastern as well as Western spiritual traditions. In East Asia, they are relevant in Daoism, Confucianism (in the context of integrating Daoist ideas) and Buddhism (in Śūnyatā), while in the European Christian discourse they are significant in the context of creatio ex nihilo, kenotic theories, individual self-emptying out of humility and Nihilianism. These concepts have formed and continue to form the basis of important intercultural interactions, influencing philosophical and scholarly discourse in both the “East” and “West” to the present day. This article compares the perception of emptiness/nothingness from two representatives of Protestantism: the Korean Christian philosopher Ryu Yongmo (1890–1981, pen name Tasŏk) and the Moravian missionary Isaac Jacob Schmidt (1779–1847), who was a pioneer of Buddhist studies in Europe. A comparison between Schmidt and Tasŏk is important, because tracing the evolution of the worldview of both thinkers reveals a great similarity in how they reconciled the spiritual heritage of Asia with the principles of Western Protestant Christianity despite their different backgrounds. It also could shed new light on the possibility of dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism, especially in the context of two major philosophical systems of Mahāyāna Buddhism: Yogācāra and Mādhyamika, which were once so important in East Asia. In addition, it is exactly the interpretation of emptiness/nothingness that forms the cornerstone of the analogy of the religious–philosophical ideas of the two thinkers compared in the article. Freight wagons in Europe have used Y25 bogies since the 1960s. Although very cost-effective, Y25 suffers from intrinsic limitations due to its architecture and running behaviour. This study introduces an innovative lightweight bogie, named 4L bogie, aimed at removing those limitations as well as improving running dynamics and track friendliness. This task was particularly challenging as the high ratio between laden and tare weight (up to 5:1) forced us to use a non-conventional suspension system and an innovative architecture of frame, reducing the mass by about 15% and the yaw moment of inertia by about 30% with respect to the Y25 bogie. Maintenance issues were addressed by reducing the number of components and easing overhaul, while the new design was validated from both the structural and the running dynamics point of view, assessing its interaction with the track in terms of stability, curving behaviour and the vertical response of the 4L bogie. Stability was improved by about 20% even in empty conditions and high conicity at the wheel/rail contact. Vertical dynamic force on a straight track, evaluated according to the Ride Force Count metric, and wear behaviour on sharp and mild curves were considerably reduced, leading to an improved track friendliness of the bogie. Technological Analysis of the Production of Nickel-Containing Composite Materials

The article presents the results of obtaining a composite material by sintering nickel-containing raw materials mixed with carbon-containing materials, namely using coke and semi-coke. The sintering process was performed at a charge layer height of 240 mm and the temperature of the lower layer was T = 1200 °C. The results of the sieve analysis showed (a fraction of 10 mm) that the yield of a suitable composite material using coke was 68.3% and with semi-coke 67.0%. The average nickel and chromium content in the composite materials was 1.42% and 3.07%, accordingly. As a result of determining the strength characteristics of the obtained composite materials with various reducing agents by dropping from a height of 2 m onto a steel pallet, it was found that the obtained composite materials have high mechanical properties in terms of strength of 81% and 89.2%. The results of the elemental composition at the studied points and the thermal analysis of the studied composite material are presented. The mineralogical composition of the composite material is presented in the form of serpentine and nontronite, and the empty rock is made of quartz and talc. The activation energy of thermal analysis by the method of non-isothermal kinetics were calculated. The results of experiments on the production of composite materials from nickel-containing raw materials will be recommended for obtaining the optimal composition of composite materials at the stage of pilot tests and industrial development of the developed technology for processing nickel ores of the Republic of Kazakhstan. For the processing of nickel-poor nickel ores, it is of great importance to obtain optimal technological and technical and economic indicators that ensure low cost of nickel in the resulting product. Cough is a common presenting symptom for patients in a primary care setting and significantly impacts a patient’s quality of life. Cough involves a complex reflex arc beginning with the stimulation of sensory nerves that function as cough receptors that stimulate the cough center in the brain. This “cough center” functions to receive these impulses and produce a cough by activating efferent nervous pathways to the diaphragm and laryngeal, thoracic, and abdominal musculature. Drugs that suppress the neural activity of cough are non-specific as those treatments are not directed toward pathogenic causes such as inflammation and oxidative stress. Moreover, they block a reflex called the watchdog of the lung and have a defense mechanism. Acute respiratory infections of the upper and lower airways most commonly cause acute cough. In contrast, the most common causes of chronic cough are upper airway cough syndrome, asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, all associated with an inflammatory reaction at the level of the cough receptors. The use of natural compounds or herbal drugs such as carob syrup, dry blackcurrant extract, dry extract of caraway fruit, dry extract of ginger rhizome, dry extract of marshmallow root, and dry extract of ivy leaves, to name a few, not only have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, but also act as antimicrobials, bronchial muscle relaxants, and increase gastric motility and empty. For these reasons, these natural substances are widely used to control cough at its deep roots (i.e., contrasting its causes and not inhibiting the arch reflex). With this approach, the lung watchdog is not put to sleep, as with peripheral or central inhibition of the cough reflex, and by contrasting the causes, we may control cough that viruses use at self-advantage to increase transmission. Historical transmission and other controversies related to Sengzhao’s Things Do Not Shift have long been a subject of scholarly attention. However, his essay Emptiness of the Nonabsolute has been insufficiently studied, despite being traditionally deemed emblematic of the Chinese understanding of Mādhyamaka philosophy. The present study shows that this essay has also historically generated divisions and debates in the Chinese context. It finds that Emptiness of the Nonabsolute expresses the Mādhyamaka philosophy of emptiness in a distinctly Chinese manner by grounding itself in the principle of dependent origination, and by transforming issues of being and nonbeing and the name and the “thing-in-itself” into conditional emergence. Nevertheless, Sengzhao’s essay evoked the two markedly distinct construals of Buzhengukong 不真故空 and Bushizhenkong 不是真空 as Tathāgatagarbha and Buddha-nature philosophy within Chinese Buddhism. Bushizhenkong directly aligned Sengzhao’s ostensibly representative theory of Mādhyamaka emptiness in China with the doctrinal framework of Tathāgatagarbha and Buddha-nature, triggering almost a millennium-long period of discussions and controversies. Effect of Feeding Level on Growth and Slaughter Performance, and Allometric Growth of Tissues and Organs in Female Growing Saanen Dairy Goats

This study aimed to investigate the effect of feeding level on the growth and slaughter performance, and allometric growth of tissues and organs in female growing dairy goats. The trial included 10–20 and 20–30 kg weight stages with 48 female goat kids. The 24 goat kids in each stage were divided into 8 blocks based on weight, with 3 kids per block. Then, three kids from each block were randomly assigned to one of the three treatments, namely ad libitum (AL100), 70% of ad libitum (AL70), or 40% of ad libitum (AL40). The slaughter trial was conducted when the AL100 kids reached the target weight of 20 or 30 kg. The results showed that the ADG and feed conversion rate showed a linear decline as the feed level decreased (p < 0.05). Compared with the AL70 and AL100 groups, the AL40 group exhibited lower shrunk body weight, empty body weight, hot carcass weight, net meat rate, carcass meat rate, and visceral fat weight (p < 0.05) in both stages. Moreover, the AL40 group showed lower weights for skin and mohair, blood, rumen, small intestine, large intestine, mammary gland, and uterus than the AL70 and AL100 groups (p < 0.05) in both stages. However, feeding level did not affect organ indices in the two stages (p > 0.05). The bone, skin and mohair were isometric (b ≈ 1), but the muscle, visceral fat, and most internal organs were positive (b > 1) in both stages. In conclusion, feeding level affects the growth and development of dairy goats, which vary depending on the body weight stage and specific tissues and organs. Full article
