The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport conducted a demonstration project targeting pilot areas to commercialize drone delivery services in urban areas and to present a standard model. In this study, flight data on drone delivery routes in Ulju and drone hovering in Yeosu were collected and analyzed for flight safety. Since there are no domestic or international regulations on the stability of drone flight, we were given the task of analyzing whether drone path flight should be maintained within a 10 m error range from the planned path line by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and whether hovering works while satisfying the left and right radius errors and altitude errors within 3 m. Accordingly, the drone flight path data analyzed in Ulju met the criteria of up to 1.07%, and the hovering data analyzed in Yeosu met the criteria of less than 3% for the entire section data. Therefore, the drone flight stability evaluation analyzed in this paper is considered to have been passed. Based on the results of this study, is the data are expected to serve as a cornerstone for establishing guidelines for drone delivery flight data analysis regulations. Full article

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found worldwide in water, soil, plants, and animals, including humans. A primary route of exposure for humans and animals to PFAS is through the diet and drinking water. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a long-chain PFAS with a relatively long half-life, has been associated with adverse health effects in humans and laboratory animals. There are few toxicokinetic studies on PFOS in domestic livestock raised for human food consumption, which are critical for assessing human food safety. This work aimed to develop a simple daily accumulation model (DAM) for predicting PFOS residues in edible beef cattle muscle. A one-compartment toxicokinetic model in a spreadsheet format was developed using simple calculations to account for daily PFAS into and out of the animal. The DAM was used to simulate two case studies to predict resultant PFOS residues in edible beef cattle tissues. The results demonstrated that the model can reasonably predict PFOS concentrations in beef cattle muscle in a real-world scenario. The DAM was then used to simulate dietary PFOS exposure in beef cattle throughout a typical lifespan in order to derive a generic bioaccumulation factor. The DAM is expected to work well for other PFAS in beef cattle, PFAS in other livestock species raised for meat, and other chemical contaminants with relatively long half-lives. Full article

Accurate forecasting of household waste generation is essential for sustainable urban planning and the development of data-driven environmental policies. Conventional statistical models, while simple and interpretable, often fail to capture the nonlinear and multidimensional relationships inherent in waste production patterns. This study proposes a machine learning-based regression framework utilizing Random Forest and XGBoost algorithms to predict annual household waste generation across four metropolitan regions in South Korea Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Jeju over the period from 2000 to 2023. Independent variables include demographic indicators (total population, working-age population, elderly population), economic indicators (Gross Regional Domestic Product), and regional identifiers encoded using One-Hot Encoding. A derived feature, elderly ratio, was introduced to reflect population aging. Model performance was evaluated using R2, RMSE, and MAE, with artificial noise added to simulate uncertainty. Random Forest demonstrated superior generalization and robustness to data irregularities, especially in data-scarce regions like Jeju. SHAP-based interpretability analysis revealed total population and GRDP as the most influential features. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating economic indicators in waste forecasting models, as demographic variables alone were insufficient for explaining waste dynamics. This approach provides valuable insights for policymakers and supports the development of adaptive, region-specific strategies for waste reduction and infrastructure investment. Full article

Corn smut, caused by Ustilago maydis, significantly threatens maize production. This study evaluated 199 maize inbred lines at the seedling stage under greenhouse conditions for resistance to U. maydis, identifying 39 highly resistant lines. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) using the mrMLM model detected 19 significant single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. Based on a linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay distance of 260 kb, 226 candidate genes were identified. Utilizing the significant loci chr1_244281660 and chr5_220156746, two kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers were successfully developed. A PCR-based sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe hybridization technique applied to the 199 experimental lines and 60 validation lines confirmed polymorphism for both markers, with selection efficiencies of 48.12% and 43.33%, respectively. The tested materials were derived from foundational inbred lines of domestic and foreign origin. Analysis of 39 highly resistant lines showed that the advantageous alleles carrying thymine/cytosine (T/C) predominated at frequencies of 94.87% and 53.84%, respectively. The genotype TTCC conferred high resistance, while CCTT was highly susceptible. The resistance exhibited high heritability and significant gene-by-environment interaction. This work systematically dissects the genetic basis of common smut resistance in maize, identifies favorable alleles, and provides a novel KASP marker-based strategy for developing disease-resistant germplasm. The COVID-19 pandemic’s rapid shift to working from home has fundamentally challenged residential acoustic design, which traditionally prioritises rest and relaxation rather than sustained concentration. However, a clear gap exists in understanding how acoustic needs and the subjective evaluation of soundscape appropriateness (SA) differ between these conflicting activities within the same domestic space. Addressing this gap, this study reveals critical differences in how people experience and evaluate home soundscapes during work versus relaxation activities in the same residential spaces. Through an online survey of 247 Chinese participants during lockdown, we assessed soundscape perception attributes, the perceived saliencies of various sound types, and soundscape appropriateness (SA) ratings while working and relaxing at home. Our findings demonstrate that working at home creates a more demanding acoustic context: participants perceived indoor soundscapes as significantly less comfortable and less full of content when working compared to relaxing (p < 0.001), with natural sounds becoming less noticeable (−13.3%) and distracting household sounds more prominent (+7.5%). Structural equation modelling revealed distinct influence mechanisms: while comfort significantly mediates SA enhancement in both activities, the effect is stronger during relaxation (R2 = 0.18). Critically, outdoor man-made noise, building-service noise, and neighbour sounds all negatively impact SA during work, with neighbour sounds showing the largest detrimental effect (total effect size = −0.17), whereas only neighbour sounds and outdoor man-made noise significantly disrupt relaxation activities. Additionally, natural sounds act as a positive factor during relaxation. These results expose a fundamental mismatch: existing residential acoustic environments, designed primarily for rest, fail to support the cognitive demands of work activities. This study provides evidence-based insights for acoustic design interventions, emphasising the need for activity-specific soundscape considerations in residential spaces. As hybrid work arrangements become the norm post-pandemic, our findings highlight the urgency of reimagining residential acoustic design to accommodate both focused work and restorative relaxation within the same home. This study defines evidence-based minimum internal floor areas required to support long-term residential use across different household types. It addresses the following question: what is the smallest viable floor area that supports sustained occupancy without persistent stress, conflict, or turnover? An integrative review method was employed, drawing from behavioural studies in environmental psychology, international regulatory standards, and real-world market data. The analysis focuses on essential domestic functions including sleep, hygiene, food preparation, storage, social interaction, and work. Quantitative findings from tenancy surveys, post-occupancy research, and market performance data indicate that residential units below 30 square metres for single occupants and 45 square metres for couples are consistently associated with reduced satisfaction and shorter tenancies. Regulatory minimums across diverse jurisdictions tend to converge near these same thresholds. The study proposes technical minimums of 30, 45, and 60 square metres for one-, two-, and three-person households, respectively. These values reflect functional lower bounds rather than ideal or aspirational sizes and are intended to inform performance-based housing standards. Full article

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is extensively recognized for its health-promoting effects and functional attributes, including antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Additionally, the derived product of the industrial maturation process, known as black garlic, is famous for its functional properties. The novelty of the present work is to characterize the functional properties of domestically produced black garlic. In fact, this study examines the domestic maturation of fresh garlic bulbs into black garlic of two Italian varieties, focusing on microbial growth, antimicrobial properties, prebiotic activity, volatile organic compounds, mechanical resistance, brown intensity, pH, and Aw. Results show that domestic processes are microbiologically and chemically safe and generate black garlic products with functional attributes such as prebiotic activity and the presence of health-related bioactive compounds, also developing superior technological performance. These findings enhance the understanding of black garlic culinary practices, leveraging gastronomic preparations for the development of healthier and safer food products. Full article

Due to advances in molecular technologies and the expanding knowledge of biomarkers, their use in patient screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted therapy is continuously increasing. Biomarker characteristics play a crucial role across all areas of medical research/practice. Biomarkers often reflect changes in the biochemical composition of biofluids, which can be qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) at various stages of clinical intervention. This study focuses on establishing physiological reference ranges for selected biochemical and metabolomic indicators by analyzing blood serum samples from domestic sheep. A total of sixty samples are examined using standard biochemical assays and HPLC, resulting in the determination of experimental reference values for twenty-one biochemical and eight metabolomic parameters. Reliable and reproducible preclinical testing is essential before any diagnostic method can be introduced into clinical use. A thorough understanding of the safety and efficacy of such methods in animal models is a prerequisite for initiating human trials. Species selection and the definition of physiological biomarker ranges are therefore critical components in the development of effective preclinical protocols. This work contributes to the foundation needed for further clinical testing by establishing reference values for relevant biomarkers in a commonly used animal model. Full article

This paper outlines the development and delivery of a novel, collaborative, co-production approach to incorporating lived experience in the development of policy and practice in the area of domestic abuse. “SEEKERS” (Sharing Experience, Expertise and Knowledge for Effective Responses and Support) is an initiative which brings together victims and advocates, police, practitioners and researchers as equal partners. It creates opportunities for them to share their experiences, expertise, and knowledge, so that others can learn from these and use this learning in addressing domestic abuse-related issues more effectively. Throughout this paper, we discuss some of the challenges encountered in developing and delivering activities and how these were addressed. Notable benefits of the approach will be highlighted, as indicated by feedback from those involved in a range of capacities, including police and law enforcement practitioners, policy makers, councillors, service providers, support services, victim advocates and survivors of domestic abuse. It is hoped that this paper will contribute to ongoing discussions regarding the ways in which different agencies and stakeholders can work together more effectively and how we can create methods and spaces to support meaningful interaction, collaboration, and co-production with victims. Multiple studies, starting with Preston’s work in 1975, have suggested that gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC) is an important explanatory factor for understanding differentials in life expectancy at birth (LEB) in countries around the world. This proposition was tested in the present study using two-period cross-sectional regression across a large number of both advanced and developing countries and 16 socioeconomic factors, including GDPPC. The best-performing regression equations in the periods around 2000 and 2015 included four to six of these factors (government effectiveness, safe sanitation, poverty and contraception, plus, in the circa-2000 period, the Gini index and CO2 emissions); perhaps surprisingly, these equations did not include GDPPC. The results were examined in greater detail for the world’s 15 most populous countries, helping to identify key drivers of LEB growth for each of these countries from circa 2000 to 2015. The fact that GDPPC drops out of the best equations calls into question the view that economic growth is the correct primary target for nations seeking to increase their average life expectancy. Analyzing how spinners are represented in art is a way to understand the role of women’s work in the medieval and premodern periods. What do spinners signify? How is this work depicted? Who are spinners? Using a selection of imagery from northern European medieval manuscripts and premodern prints from the 14th to the 17th centuries allows us to see how pervasive the spinner was as a symbolic device. Characters such as Eve, Mary, Sardanapalus, and Hercules are unified by their spinning. As they work with the spindle and distaff, they are makers in addition to being religious or mythological figures. Though spinning does not always (if at all) appear in their textual narratives, it is part of the established iconography for each and persisted as a way to communicate or demean the value of women’s domestic enterprises. Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) are a proven technology for water heating that has been commercialized. The adoption of HPWHs for domestic and commercial water heating is growing rapidly because of their superior performance compared with alternative water heating methods. Whereas most existing systems use R-134a as a working refrigerant, R290 has gained major attention owing to its superior thermodynamic properties. The goal of the current study is to assess the performance of residential HPWH with R290 as a direct refrigerant replacement for R134a. Two units of a 50 gal HPWH were used in this experimental study. A baseline unit contained R134a refrigerant, and a prototype unit contained R290 refrigerant. The prototype unit was developed through the modification of a commercially available HPWH unit to achieve a low charge of R290 refrigerant. Another major modification was the replacement of the baseline compressor with a compressor designed for R290. Tests were conducted in a field environment (a research and demonstration house) using programmed drawn profiles daily. The prototype that reduced the charge by 43–47% provided displayed performance comparable to the baseline unit regarding first-hour rating (FHR) and the uniform energy factor (UEF). Full article

Body stalk anomaly (BSA) is a rare and usually fatal congenital disorder involving severe malformations of the body wall, limbs, spine, and internal organs. This study presents the first documented cases of BSA in seven dogs, offering new insights into how the disorder manifests in animals. The affected fetuses consistently exhibited major anomalies, including large abdominal wall defects, structural spinal abnormalities, and a variety of limb malformations ranging from partial agenesis and meromelia to phocomelia and complete amelia. Structural urogenital anomalies and orofacial clefts were also observed, aligning with similar findings in BSA cases reported in pigs and cats. These findings support the hypothesis of a multifactorial etiology involving early embryonic disruptions, such as abnormal folding of the embryo, rupture of the amniotic membrane, and vascular compromise. The frequent occurrence of abdominal wall defects alongside umbilical cord abnormalities further suggests a shared developmental pathway. This study also highlights the value of veterinary cases in comparative embryology and the need to assess congenital anomalies as part of a broader malformation complex. By expanding the phenotypic spectrum of BSA in domestic animals, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of its pathogenesis and emphasizes the importance of further research into the genetic and environmental factors involved. Such efforts could lead to improved classification and diagnosis of complex congenital malformations, as well as facilitate cross-species comparisons. Full article

For the first time, the numerous scattered data on birds (wild and domestic) have been collected based on their medieval bone remains discovered on the modern territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. The collected information is about a total of 37 medieval settlements from the time of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. Among the settlements studied are both the two medieval Bulgarian capitals (Pliska and Veliki Preslav), as well as other cities, smaller settlements, military fortresses, monasteries, and inhabited caves. The data refer to a total of 48 species of wild birds and 6 forms of domestic birds of 11 avian orders: Accipitriformes, Anseriformes, Ciconiiformes, Columbiformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Otidiformes, Passeriformes, Pelecaniformes, and Strigiformes. The established composition of wild birds amounts to over one tenth (to 11.5%) of the modern avifauna in the country. Five of the established species (10.4%) have disappeared from the modern nesting avifauna of the country—the bearded vulture, the great bustard, the little bustard, the gray crane, and the saker falcon (the latter two species have reappeared as nesters in the past few years). First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018): Investigated settlements—22. Period covered—five centuries (7th to 11th c.). Found in total: at least 44 species/forms of birds, of which 39 species of wild birds and 5 forms of poultry. Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396): Investigated settlements—15. Period covered—3 centuries (12th to 14th c.). Found in total: at least 39 species/forms of birds, of which 33 species of wild birds and 6 forms of poultry. The groups of raptors, water, woodland, openland, synanthropic and domestic birds were analyzed separately. The conclusion was made that during the two periods of the Middle Ages, birds had an important role in the material and spiritual life of the population of the Bulgarian lands. Birds were mainly used for food (domestic birds), although some were objects of hunting. No traces of processing were found on the bones. Birds were subjects of works of applied and monumental art. Their images decorated jewelry, tableware, walls of buildings and other structures. Full article

Measuring Viscosity and Consistency in Thickened Liquids for Dysphagia: Is There a Correlation Between Different Methods?

Dysphagia is a common clinical condition, especially among older adults, associated with an increased risk of malnutrition, aspiration, and respiratory complications. A key therapeutic approach involves modifying liquid consistency using thickening agents to achieve safer swallowing. Although rotational rheometry offers accurate viscosity characterization, its complexity and cost limit routine application in clinical or domestic settings. This study evaluates and correlates different methods for measuring the viscosity of thickened liquids, comparing rheological data with empirical techniques such as the Ford cup, Bostwick consistometer, and Line-Spread Test (LST). Several thickeners were tested—guar gum, xanthan gum, a guar/xanthan blend, maltodextrin-based mixtures, and a commercial thickener—across a range of concentrations, temperatures, and preparation times. The results demonstrate that simple methods, particularly the Bostwick consistometer and LST, show strong correlations with rheometer measurements within the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) Level 2 (mildly thick) and Level 3 (moderately thick) ranges. However, limitations were observed at extreme viscosities, where certain methods lacked sensitivity or operational feasibility. These findings support the potential of empirical tools for practical viscosity screening in dysphagia management, especially where rheometry is unavailable. This work provides evidence-based guidance for clinicians, caregivers, and food service professionals seeking safe, reproducible, and standardized approaches to fluid consistency assessment.
