The resulting resin systems were designated as AFG-90MH-MDA, AFG-90MH-MOEA, AFG-90MH-MOCA, and AFG-90MH-MCDEA. After curing, these systems were named AFG-90MH-MDA-C, AFG-90MH-MOEA-C, AFG-90MH-MOCA-C, and AFG-90MH-MCDEA-C. The influence of the structure of the diamines on the processability, curing reaction activity, and thermal and mechanical properties (including flexural and tensile properties) of the epoxy resins were investigated. These systems demonstrate excellent processability with wide processing windows ranging from 30 °C to 110–160 °C while maintaining low viscosity. Consistent apparent activation energy (Ea) trends via both Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods were observed. The epoxy systems exhibit the following increasing Ea sequence: AFG-90MH-MDA < AFG-90MH-MOEA < AFG-90MH-MOCA < AFG-90MH-MCDEA. The processability and curing reaction kinetic results indicate that the reactivities of the diamines decrease in the order: MDA > MOEA > MOCA > MCDEA. Polar chlorine substituents in diamines strengthen intermolecular interactions, thereby enhancing mechanical performance. The flexural strength of cured epoxy systems decreases as follows with corresponding values: AFG-90MH-MOCA-C (165 MPa) > AFG-90MH-MDA-C (158 MPa) > AFG-90MH-MCDEA-C (148 MPa) > AFG-90MH-MOEA-C (136 MPa). Diamines with substituents like chlorine or ethyl groups reduce the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the cured resin systems. However, the cured resin systems with the diamines containing chlorine demonstrate superior thermal performance compared to those with ethyl groups. The cured epoxy systems exhibit the following descending glass transition temperature order with corresponding values: AFG-90MH-MDA-C (213 °C) > AFG-90MH-MOCA-C (190 °C) > AFG-90MH-MCDEA-C (183 °C) > AFG-90MH-MOEA-C (172 °C). This study aims to investigate the toughening effects of rubber and thermoplastic particles on epoxy resin (EP), and to understand the mechanism underlying their synergistic effect. For this purpose, three EP systems were prepared using diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin (E-54) and 4,4-Diamino diphenyl methane (Ag-80) as matrix resin, 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) as a curing agent, and phenolphthalein poly (aryl ether ketone) particles (PEK-C) and carboxyl-terminated butyl liquid rubber (CTBN) as toughening agents. These systems are classified as an EP/PEK-C toughening system, EP/CTBN toughening system, and EP/PEK-C/CTBN synergistic toughening system. The curing behavior, thermal properties, mechanical properties, and phase structure of the synergistic-toughened EP systems were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that PEK-C did not react with EP, while CTBN reacted with EP to form a flexible block polymer. The impact toughness of EP toughened by PEK-C/CTBN was improved obviously without significantly increasing viscosity or decreasing thermal stability, flexural strength, and modulus, and the synergistic toughening effect was significantly higher than that of the single toughening system. The notable improvement in toughness is believed to be due to the synergistic energy dissipation effect of PEK-C/CTBN. Full article

A new copper(I) complex, [Cu2(L)2dppm](PF6)2 (1) [L = 3-(2-Pyridyl)-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine and dppm: Bis(diphenylphosphino)methane], was prepared and characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, 31P-NMR spectroscopy, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Complex 1 is a dinuclear compound, showing that L and dppm act as tridentate and bidentate chelating ligands, respectively. The two Cu(I) atoms exhibit a distorted tetrahedral coordination sphere embedded in N3P environments. The supramolecular interactions in the solid-state structure are characterized by C−H···N, C−H···F, C-H···π and π···π intermolecular interactions, which we studied using Hirshfeld surface and fingerprint tools. Additionally, the complex was studied experimentally using UV–Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, and theoretical studies with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) were performed. Moreover, the optical and electrochemical properties were studied, focusing on the band gap. Compound 1 was used as a co-sensitizer in a dye-sensitized solar cell, showing a good photovoltaic performance of 2.03% (Jsc = 5.095 mAcm−2, Voc = 757 mV, and FF = 52.7%) under 100 mW cm−2 (AM 1.5G) solar irradiation, which is similar to that of DSSC, which was only sensitized by N719 (2.2%) under the same condition. The synthesis of a substituted diimine with a bipydirine-type backbone, (3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine, L) and its coordination towards Cu(I) and Ag(I) is studied in the presence of diphosphine ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, dppm. The metal complexes are characterized by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR and single crystal X ray diffraction studies. They are dinuclear, as they are held by diphosphine bridges between the tetrahedral metal centers, forming eight-membered ring with the participation of the bridging diphosphinomethane ligands. Within each ring, the planar orientations of M2P2 and of all four P atoms are realized. Solid state excitation spectra are dominated by metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands (MLCT), while geometry relaxation permits only low-intensity emission for the copper compound. Full article

To study the flammability of the samples, standard flammability tests were carried out, such as thermogravimetric analysis, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, and cone calorimetry. In addition, in order to test the effectiveness of fire retardants under real fire conditions, for the first time, the thermal structure of downward flame propagation over GFRER composites was measured using thin thermocouples. For the first time, the measured thermal structure of the flame was compared with the results of numerical simulations of flame propagation over GFRER. Full article

The need for new antibiotics has become a major worldwide challenge as bacterial strains keep developing resistance to the existing drugs at an alarming rate. Enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductases (FabI) play a crucial role in lipids and fatty acid biosynthesis, which are essential for the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane. Our study aimed to discover small FabI inhibitors in continuation to our previously found hit MN02. The process was initially started by conducting a similarity search to the NCI ligand database using MN02 as a query. Accordingly, ten compounds were chosen for the computational assessment and antimicrobial testing. Most of the compounds showed an antibacterial activity against Gram-positive strains, while RK10 exhibited broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. All tested compounds were then docked into the saFabI active site followed by 100 ns MD simulations (Molecular Dynamics) and MM-GBSA (Molecular Mechanics with Generalised Born and Surface Area Solvation) calculations in order to understand their fitting and estimate their binding energies. Interestingly, and in line with the experimental data, RK10 was able to exhibit the best fitting with the target catalytic pocket. To sum up, RK10 is a small compound with leadlike characteristics that can indeed act as a promising candidate for the future development of broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. Full article

Bio-based thermoplastic polyurethanes have attracted increasing attention as advanced shape memory materials. Using the prepolymer method, novel fast-responding shape memory thermoplastic polyurethanes (SMTPUs) were prepared from 100% bio-based polyester polyol, poly-propylene succinate derived from corn oil, diphenyl methane diisocyanate, and bio-based 1,3-propanediol as a chain extender. The morphologies of the SMTPUs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, which revealed the interdomain spacing between the hard and soft phases, the degree of phase separation, and the intermixing level between the hard and soft phases. The thermal and mechanical properties of the SMTPUs were also investigated, wherein a high hard segment content imparted unique properties that rendered the SMTPUs suitable for shape memory applications at varying temperatures. More specifically, the SMTPUs exhibited a high level of elastic elongation and good mechanical strength. Following compositional optimization, a tensile strength of 24–27 MPa was achieved, in addition to an elongation at break of 358–552% and a hardness of 84–92 Shore A. Moreover, the bio-based SMTPU exhibited a shape recovery of 100%, thereby indicating its potential for use as an advanced temperature-dependent shape memory material with an excellent shape recoverability. In this study, a series of bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was synthesized via the solvent-free one-shot method using 100% bio-based polyether polyol, prepared from fermented corn, and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a chain extender. The average molecular weight, degree of phase separation, thermal and mechanical properties of the TPU-based aromatic (4,4-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate: MDI), and aliphatic (bis(4-isocyanatocyclohexyl) methane: H12MDI) isocyanates were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Four types of micro-phase separation forms of a hard segment (HS) and soft segment (SS) were suggested according to the [NCO]/[OH] molar ratio and isocyanate type. The results showed (a) phase-mixed disassociated structure between HS and SS, (b) hydrogen-bonded structure of phase-separated between HS and SS forming one-sided hard domains, (c) hydrogen-bonded structure of phase-mixed between HS, and SS and (d) hydrogen-bonded structure of phase-separated between HS and SS forming dispersed hard domains. These phase micro-structure models could be matched with each bio-based TPU sample. Accordingly, H-BDO-2.0, M-BDO-2.0, H-BDO-2.5, and M-BDO-3.0 could be related to the (a)—form, (b)—form, (c)—form, and (d)—form, respectively. Full article

Distiller’s grain is rich in natural active ingredients and can be used as an excellent antioxidant feed for goats. The current study aimed to assess the feeding value of four different types of distiller’s grains with an in vitro gas production trial. The chemical composition, total phenols, total anthocyanins, dry matter degradability, methane, hydrogen, and rumen fermentation parameters were evaluated. The results indicated that red distiller’s grain and glutinous rice distiller’s grain had higher (p < 0.05) levels of crude protein than the other two types. There were significantly (p < 0.05) higher concentrations of dry matter, ether extract, hemicellulose, and total carbohydrate in corn distiller’s grain than in the other three types of distiller’s grain. In addition, red distiller’s grain showed a higher (p < 0.05) gas production rate constant (c) and ruminal outflow rate, as well as higher (p < 0.05) concentrations of total phenol, total anthocyanins and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, than the other three types of distiller’s grains. In contrast, red distiller’s grain displayed the lowest (p < 0.05) immediately soluble fraction (a) and half the time of maximum gas production relative to the other samples. In particular, the levels of methane (%) in white distiller’s grain and glutinous rice distiller’s grain were greater (p < 0.05) than that in red distiller’s grain. Moreover, the ammonia nitrogen content in red distiller’s grain was greater (p < 0.05) than that in white distiller’s grain and corn distiller’s grain. In contrast, red distiller’s grain exhibited a lower (p < 0.05) level of ruminal fluid acetic acid relative to that found in white distiller’s grain and corn distiller’s grain. Taken together, the results showed that red distiller’s grain and glutinous rice distiller’s grain could be used as protein feed, red distiller’s grain had higher levels of total phenols and total anthocyanins and a high DPPH scavenging activity; corn distiller’s grain might be considered as an alternative energy source feed, and white distiller’s grain exhibited higher total gas production. The purpose of this study was to prepare low-viscosity lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) resins for the modification of ramie (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich) fiber via impregnation to improve the fiber’s thermal and mechanical properties. Low-viscosity LPU resins were prepared by dissolving lignin in 20% NaOH and then adding polymeric 4,4-methane diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI, 31% NCO) with a mole ratio of 0.3 NCO/OH. Ramie fiber was impregnated with LPU in a vacuum chamber equipped with a two-stage vacuum pump. Several techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and a universal testing machine were used to characterize lignin, LPU, and ramie fiber. The LPU resins had low viscosity ranging from 77 to 317 mPa·s−1. According to FTIR and EDX analysis, urethane bonds were formed during the synthesis of LPU resins and after impregnation into ramie fibers. After impregnation, the reaction between the LPU’s urethane group and the hydroxy group of ramie fiber increased thermal stability by an average of 6% and mechanical properties by an average of 100% compared to the untreated ramie fiber. The highest thermal stability and tensile strength were obtained at ramie impregnated with LPU-ethyl acetate for 30 min, with a residual weight of 22% and tensile strength of 648.7 MPa. This study showed that impregnation with LPU resins can enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of fibers and increase their wider industrial utilization in value-added applications. In this study, lignin isolated and fractionated from black liquor was used as a pre-polymer to prepare bio-polyurethane (Bio-PU) resin, and the resin was impregnated into ramie fiber (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich) to improve its thermal and mechanical properties. The isolated lignin was fractionated by one-step fractionation using two different solvents, i.e., methanol (MeOH) and acetone (Ac). Each fractionated lignin was dissolved in NaOH and then reacted with a polymeric 4,4-methane diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) polymer at an NCO/OH mole ratio of 0.3. The resulting Bio-PU was then used in the impregnation of ramie fiber. The characterization of lignin, Bio-PU, and ramie fiber was carried out using several techniques, i.e., Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), pyrolysis-gas-chromatography-mass-spectroscopy (Py-GCMS), Micro Confocal Raman spectroscopy, and an evaluation of fiber mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity and tensile strength). Impregnation of Bio-PU into ramie fiber resulted in weight gain ranging from 6% to 15%, and the values increased when extending the impregnation time. The reaction between the NCO group on Bio-PU and the OH group on ramie fiber forms a C=O group of urethane as confirmed by FTIR and Micro Confocal Raman spectroscopies at a wavenumber of 1600 cm−1. Based on the TGA analysis, ramie fiber with lignin-based Bio-PU had better thermal properties than ramie fiber before impregnation with a greater weight residue of 21.7%. The mechanical properties of ramie fiber also increased after impregnation with lignin-based Bio-PU, resulting in a modulus of elasticity of 31 GPa for ramie-L-isolated and a tensile strength of 577 MPa for ramie-L-Ac. The enhanced thermal and mechanical properties of impregnated ramie fiber with lignin-based Bio-PU resins could increase the added value of ramie fiber and enhance its more comprehensive industrial application as a functional material. Thyromimetics, whose physicochemical characteristics are analog to thyroid hormones (THs) and their derivatives, are promising candidates as novel therapeutics for neurodegenerative and metabolic pathologies. In particular, sobetirome (GC-1), one of the initial halogen-free thyromimetics, and newly synthesized IS25 and TG68, with optimized ADME-Tox profile, have recently attracted attention owing to their superior therapeutic benefits, selectivity, and enhanced permeability. Here, we further explored the functional capabilities of these thyromimetics to inhibit transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis. TTR is a homotetrameric transporter protein for THs, yet it is also responsible for severe amyloid fibril formation, which is facilitated by tetramer dissociation into non-native monomers. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, computational simulation, and biochemical assays, we found that GC-1 and newly designed diphenyl-methane-based thyromimetics, namely IS25 and TG68, are TTR stabilizers and efficient suppressors of TTR aggregation. Based on these observations, we propose the novel potential of thyromimetics as a multi-functional therapeutic molecule for TTR-related pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases. Full article

The used wood chips varied in linear dimensions and original source. The origin determined the wood quality, which translated into the chips’ linear dimensions. The used materials were chips from sawmill waste processing, aggregate processing of sawmill wood, and chips intended for medium-density boards. The experiment demonstrated that the best boards in terms of mechanical properties were obtained from 4-mm-thick chips with 30% sawdust content and a density of 850 kg/m3. These boards meet the requirements of the EN 312 (2010) standard for P5 boards. Full article

Abstract
By employment of a pre-designed molecular building block [(pzTp)Fe(CN)3], one cyano-bridged trinuclear complex [MnMe4TACD][(pzTp)Fe(CN)3]2(H2O)16 1, [pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazoly)borate, Me4TACD = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane] and two 1D chain-like coordination polymers {[(pzTp)Fe(CN)3 [...] Read more.

Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity of compounds 13 was studied against four human liver cancer cells (HepG2, Bel-7402, SMMC7721, and MHCC97) via the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay experiments.
