In the digital age, online teacher professional development (TPD) has become a key strategy for enhancing instructional quality and ensuring equitable access to continuous learning. This research compares and analyzes Chinese online teacher professional development (TPD) with the United States over a period of ten years, from 2014 to 2024. This study uses a mixed-methods approach based on policy documents, structured surveys, and interviews to investigate how governance regimes influence TPD outcomes for fair education. Both countries experienced a massive expansion of web-based TPD access and engagement, with participation rates over 75% and effectiveness scores over 4.3 by 2024. China focused on fast scaling by way of centralized mandates and investments in infrastructure, while the United States emphasized gradual expansion through decentralized, locally appropriate models. Most indicators had converged by the end of the period, even with these different approaches. Yet, qualitative evidence reveals persisting gaps in functional access and contextual appropriateness, especially in rural settings. Equality frameworks with attention to teacher agency, policy implementation, and digital usability must supplant weak access metrics. A hybrid paradigm presents itself as an attractive means toward building equitable and productive digital TPD environments through the symbiotic integration of China’s successful scalability and the United States’ professional autonomy. Awareness, Preference, and Acceptance of HPV Vaccine and Related Influencing Factors Among Guardians of Adolescent Girls in China: A Health Belief Model-Based Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Cervical cancer poses a threat to the health of women globally. Adolescent girls are the primary target population for HPV vaccination, and guardians’ attitude towards the HPV vaccine plays a significant role in determining the vaccination status among adolescent girls. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the factors influencing guardians’ HPV vaccine acceptance for their girls and provide clues for the development of health intervention strategies. Methods: Combining the health belief model as a theoretical framework, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted. A total of 2157 adolescent girls and their guardians were recruited. The multivariable logistic model was applied to explore associated factors. Results: The guardians had a high HPV vaccine acceptance rate (86.7%) for their girls, and they demonstrated a relatively good level of awareness regarding HPV and HPV vaccines. Factors influencing guardians’ HPV vaccine acceptance for girls included guardians’ education background (OR = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.37–0.87), family income (OR = 1.94, 95%CI = 1.14–3.32), risk of HPV infection (OR = 3.15, 95%CI = 1.40–7.10) or importance of the HPV vaccine for their girls (OR = 6.70, 95%CI = 1.61–27.83), vaccination status surrounding them (OR = 2.03, 95%CI = 1.41–2.92), awareness of negative information about HPV vaccines (OR = 0.59, 95%CI = 0.43–0.82), and recommendations from medical staff (OR = 2.32, 95%CI = 1.65–3.25). Also, guardians preferred to get digital information on vaccines via government or CDC platforms, WeChat platforms, and medical knowledge platforms. Conclusions: Though HPV vaccine willingness was high among Chinese guardians, they preferred to vaccinate their daughters at the age of 17–18 years, later than WHO’s recommended optimal age period (9–14 years old), coupled with safety concerns. Future work should be conducted based on these findings to explore digital intervention effects on girls’ vaccination compliance. Full article

Background: Rapid urbanization has intensified the challenges of freight transport, particularly in last-mile (LM) delivery, leading to rising costs and environmental externalities. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising innovation to address these issues. While much of the existing literature emphasizes business and operational perspectives, this study focuses on the acceptance of AVs from the standpoint of e-consumers—individuals who make purchases via digital platforms—in an emerging market context. Methods: Grounded in an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), which is specifically suited to consumer-focused technology adoption research, this study incorporates five constructs tailored to AV adoption. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to survey data collected from 304 e-consumers in Northeast Brazil. Results: The findings reveal that performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and environmental awareness exert significant positive effects on acceptance and intention to use AVs for LM delivery. Social influence shows a weaker, yet still positive, impact. Importantly, price sensitivity exhibits a minimal effect, suggesting that while consumers are generally cost-conscious, perceived value may outweigh price concerns in early adoption stages. Conclusions: These results offer valuable insights for policymakers and logistics providers aiming to implement consumer-oriented, cost-effective AV solutions in LM delivery, particularly in emerging economies. The findings emphasize the need for strategies that highlight the practical, emotional, and environmental benefits of AVs to foster market acceptance. Full article

In the context of increasing Artificial Intelligence integration in higher education, understanding the factors influencing university teachers’ adoption of AI tools is critical for effective implementation. This study adopts a perception–intention–behavior framework to explores the roles of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived trust, perceived substitution crisis, and perceived risk in shaping teachers’ behavioral intention and actual usage of AI tools. It also investigates the moderating effects of peer influence and organizational support on these relationships. Using a comprehensive survey instrument, data was collected from 487 university teachers across four major regions in China. The results reveal that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are strong predictors of behavioral intention, with perceived ease of use also significantly influencing perceived usefulness. Perceived trust serves as a key mediator, enhancing the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention. While perceived substitution crisis negatively influenced perceived trust, it showed no significant direct effect on behavioral intention, suggesting a complex relationship between job displacement concerns and AI adoption. In contrast, perceived risk was found to negatively impact behavioral intention, though it was mitigated by perceived ease of use. Peer influence significantly moderated the relationship between perceived trust and behavioral intention, highlighting the importance of peer influence in AI adoption, while organizational support amplified the effect of perceived ease of use on behavioral intention. These findings inform practical strategies such as co-developing user-centered AI tools, enhancing institutional trust through transparent governance, leveraging peer support, providing structured training and technical assistance, and advancing policy-level initiatives to guide digital transformation in universities. Digital competence refers to the integration of digital technology in teaching and learning, as outlined in the national curriculum of Estonia for upper secondary schools. This study presents original research findings on Estonian science teachers’ use of digital tools and materials, their digital competence, and the main benefits and challenges they face. The findings emphasize the need for continued professional development, accessible digital resources, and equitable digital infrastructure to maintain Estonia’s leadership in digital science education. A survey of 58 secondary school science teachers revealed that computers (desktops, laptops, and tablets) are the primary digital tools used. The article explores digital literacy advancements in secondary science education, research methodologies used to assess digital tool usage, and key findings from recent studies. However, challenges such as digital equity, technological barriers, and digital fatigue persist. Additionally, discrepancies were found in teachers’ responses regarding digital tool effectiveness, implementation strategies, and perceived barriers. While some teachers reported a successful integration and improved student outcomes, others highlighted difficulties in aligning digital resources with curriculum requirements and pedagogical approaches. Can FinTech Close the VAT Gap? An Entrepreneurial, Behavioral, and Technological Analysis of Tourism SMEs

Governments worldwide are mandating e-invoicing and real-time VAT reporting, yet many cash-intensive service SMEs continue to under-report VAT, eroding fiscal revenues. This study investigates whether financial technology (FinTech) adoption can reduce this under-reporting among tourism SMEs in Greece—an economy with high seasonal spending and a persistent shadow economy. This is the first micro-level empirical study to examine how FinTech tools affect VAT compliance in this sector, offering novel insights into how technology interacts with behavioral factors to influence fiscal behavior. Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model, deterrence theory, and behavioral tax compliance frameworks, we surveyed 214 hotels, guesthouses, and tour operators across Greece’s main tourism regions. A structured questionnaire measured five constructs: FinTech adoption, VAT compliance behavior, tax morale, perceived audit probability, and financial performance. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling and bootstrapped moderation–mediation analysis, we find that FinTech adoption significantly improves declared VAT, with compliance fully mediating its impact on financial outcomes. The effect is especially strong among businesses led by owners with high tax morale or strong perceptions of audit risk. These findings suggest that FinTech tools function both as efficiency enablers and behavioral nudges. The results support targeted policy actions such as subsidies for e-invoicing, tax compliance training, and transparent audit communication. By integrating technological and psychological dimensions, the study contributes new evidence to the digital fiscal governance literature and offers a practical framework for narrowing the VAT gap in tourism-driven economies. Background: Social and financial services are essential for the inclusion and well-being of people with disabilities (PWDs), who often rely on family caregivers to access these systems. In Saudi Arabia, where disability inclusion is a strategic goal under Vision 2030, understanding caregiver experiences is crucial to identifying service gaps and improving accessibility. Objectives: This study aimed to explore caregivers’ perspectives on awareness, perceived barriers, and accessibility of social and financial services for PWDs in Saudi Arabia. The analysis is grounded in Andersen’s Behavioural Model of Health Service Use and the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 3353 caregivers of PWDs attending specialised day schools. The survey collected data on demographic characteristics, service awareness, utilisation, and perceived obstacles. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) identified latent constructs, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test relationships between awareness, barriers, and accessibility. Results: Findings reveal that over 70% of caregivers lacked awareness of available services, and only about 3% had accessed them. Key challenges included technological barriers, complex procedures, and non-functional or unclear service provider platforms. Both User Barriers and Service Barriers were negatively associated with Awareness and Accessibility. Awareness, in turn, significantly predicted perceived Accessibility. Caregiver demographics, such as age, education, gender, and geographic location, also influenced awareness and service use. Conclusions: There is a pressing need for targeted awareness campaigns, accessible digital service platforms, and simplified service processes tailored to diverse caregiver profiles. Inclusive communication, decentralised outreach, and policy reforms are necessary to enhance service access and promote the societal inclusion of PWDs in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The present study examines the barriers that prevent cooling system flexibility from being optimized. In the context of an increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, the necessity for flexible energy utilization is becoming increasingly apparent. A survey and discussion groups were conducted with various stakeholders within the cooling value chain to obtain their experiences and insights regarding barriers to flexibilization. The findings point out that economic, technological, and regulatory barriers are the primary factors impeding the implementation of flexible solutions. In particular, high investment costs, complex technical implementation, a lack of information, and a complicated legal framework were identified as significant impediments. To enhance the flexibility of cooling systems, coordinated efforts are necessary to address these barriers. Practical examples, training, and the standardization and digitalization of processes could facilitate the widespread implementation of flexible cooling systems. Full article

Sustainability has emerged as a critical issue in development. Digital transformation functions as both an enabler and an effective tool for promoting sustainability. Strategy plays a pivotal role in the process of digital transformation. However, there is a paucity of existing research focused on strategic renewal in digital transformation within the context of China. This study employs organizational learning theory to examine the antecedents and consequences of strategic renewal in digital transformation. Data were collected from 389 government employees through a questionnaire survey and a quantitative analysis was performed to evaluate four hypotheses using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicate that knowledge acquisition and organizational memory significantly influence strategic renewal, which in turn affects government performance. The findings of this study could serve as a guide and provide concrete practical approaches for successful digital transformation among governments, thereby laying a foundation for sustainable development. As ad-supported subscription models proliferate across over-the-top (OTT) media platforms, understanding the psychological mechanisms and perceptual factors that underlie consumers’ transition decisions becomes increasingly consequential. This study integrates the Uses and Gratifications framework with a contemporary motivation-based perspective to examine how users’ media consumption motivations and advertising attitudes predict intentions to adopt ad-supported OTT plans. Data were collected via a nationally representative online survey in South Korea (N = 813). The sample included both premium subscribers (n = 708) and non-subscribers (n = 105). The findings reveal distinct segmentation in decision-making patterns. Among premium subscribers, switching intentions were predominantly driven by intrinsic motivations—particularly identity alignment with content—and by the perceived informational value of advertisements. These individuals are more likely to consider ad-supported plans when ad content is personally relevant and cognitively enriching. Conversely, non-subscribers exhibited greater sensitivity to extrinsic cues such as the entertainment value of ads and the presence of tangible incentives (e.g., discounts), suggesting a hedonic-reward orientation. By advancing a dual-pathway explanatory model, this study contributes to the theoretical discourse on digital subscription behavior and offers actionable insights for OTT service providers. The results underscore the necessity of segment-specific advertising strategies: premium subscribers may be engaged through informative and identity-consistent advertising, while non-subscribers respond more favorably to enjoyable and benefit-laden ad experiences. These insights inform platform monetization efforts amid the evolving dynamics of consumer attention and subscription fatigue. Full article

As augmented reality (AR) advertising becomes increasingly prevalent across digital platforms, understanding how its unique features influence consumer responses is critical for both theory and practice. Based on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), this study develops and validates a dual-dimension content–dual-route processing model to investigate how different features of AR advertising influence consumer engagement. Specifically, it examines how product-related attributes (attractiveness, informativeness) and technology-related attributes (interactivity, augmentation) shape attitudes toward the ad and purchase intentions through cognitive (information credibility) and affective (enjoyment) pathways. Using data from an online survey (N = 299), the study applies partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed model. The results show that informativeness and augmentation significantly enhance information credibility, while attractiveness primarily influences emotional responses. Interactivity and augmentation positively influence cognitive and affective responses. Mediation analysis confirms the simultaneous activation of central and peripheral processing routes, with flow experience emerging as a significant moderator in selected pathways. By introducing a structured framework for AR advertising content, this study extends the applicability of the ELM in immersive media contexts. It underscores the combined impact of rational evaluation and emotional engagement in shaping consumer behavior and offers practical insights for designing effective AR advertising strategies. Residential green space is an important component of urban green space and one of the major indicators for evaluating the quality of a residential community. Traditional indicators such as the green space ratio only consider the relationship between green space area and total area of the residential community while ignoring the difference in the amount of green space enjoyed by household residents in high-rise and low-rise buildings. Therefore, it is meaningful to estimate household green space and its spatial distribution in residential communities. However, there are frequent difficulties in obtaining specific green space area and household number through ground surveys or consulting with property management units. In this study, taking a composite residential community in Chongqing, China, as the study site, we first employed a five-lens drone to capture its oblique RGB images and generated the DOM (Digital Orthophoto Map). Subsequently, the green space area and distribution in the entire residential community were extracted from the DOM using VDVI (Visible Difference Vegetation Index). The YOLACT (You Only Look At Coefficients) instance segmentation model was used to recognize balconies from the facade images of high-rise buildings to determine their household numbers. Finally, the average green space per household in the entire residential community was calculated to be 67.82 m2, and those in the high-rise and low-rise building zones were 51.28 m2 and 300 m2, respectively. Compared with the green space ratios of 65.5% and 50%, household green space more truly reflected the actual green space occupation in high- and low-rise building zones. Full article

The adoption of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), has emerged as a key strategy to improve efficiency, sustainability, and productivity in the agricultural sector, especially in contexts of modernization and digital transformation in developing regions. This study analyzes the key factors influencing the adoption of IoT technologies by farmers in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, and their impact on agricultural yields. The research is grounded in innovation diffusion theory and technology acceptance models, which emphasize the role of perception, usability, training, and economic viability in digital adoption. A total of 250 surveys were administered, with 232 valid responses (92.8% response rate), reflecting strong interest from the agricultural sector in digital transformation and precision agriculture. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the results confirm that general perception of IoT (β = 0.514), practical functionality (β = 0.488), and technical training (β = 0.523) positively influence adoption, while high implementation costs negatively affect it (β = −0.651), all of which are statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, adoption has a strong positive effect on agricultural yield (β = 0.795). The model explained a high percentage of variance in both adoption (R2 = 0.771) and performance (R2 = 0.706), supporting its predictive capacity. These findings underscore the need for public and private institutions to implement targeted training and financing strategies to overcome economic barriers and foster the sustainable integration of IoT technologies in Ecuadorian agriculture. This study examines the development of the digital economy and society in the Republic of Kazakhstan by combining international benchmarking with a context-specific national framework. It highlights the limitations of existing global indices such as DESI, NRI, and EGDI in capturing the structural and institutional dimensions of digital transformation in emerging economies. To address this gap, the study introduces a novel composite metric, the Index of Digital Economy Development (IDED), which integrates five sub-indices: infrastructure, usage, human capital, economic digitization, and transformation effectiveness. The methodology involves comparative index analysis, the construction of the IDED, and statistical validation through a public opinion survey and regression modeling. Key findings indicate that cybersecurity is a critical yet under-represented component of digital development, showing strong empirical correlations with DESI scores in benchmark countries. The results also highlight Kazakhstan’s strengths in digital public services and internet access, contrasted with weaknesses in business digitization and innovation. The proposed IDED offers a more comprehensive and policy-relevant tool for assessing digital progress in transitional economies. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a replicable index structure and providing empirical evidence for the inclusion of cybersecurity in national digital economy assessments. The aim of the study is to assess Kazakhstan’s digital economy development by addressing limitations in global measurement frameworks. Methodologically, it combines comparative index analysis, the construction of a national composite index (IDED), and statistical validation using a regional survey and regression analysis. The findings reveal both strengths and gaps in Kazakhstan’s digital landscape, particularly in cybersecurity and SME digitalization. The IDED introduces an innovative, context-sensitive framework that enhances the measurement of digital transformation in transitional economies. Full article

Smart living is strongly promoted to enhance the quality of life via the application of innovative solutions, and this is driven by domain specialists and policymakers, including designers, urban planners, computer engineers, and property developers. Nonetheless, the actual user, whose views ought to be considered during the design and development of smart living systems, has received little attention. Thus, this study aims to identify and examine the critical smart functions to achieve smart living in smart buildings based on occupants’ perceptions. The aim is achieved using a sequential quantitative research method involving a literature review and 221 valid survey data gathered from a case of a smart student residence in Hong Kong. The method is further integrated with descriptive statistics, the Kruskal–Walli’s test, and the criticality test. The results were validated via a post-survey with related experts. Twenty-six critical smart functions for smart living were revealed, with the top three including the ability to protect personal data and information privacy, provide real-time safety and security, and the ability to be responsive to users’ needs. A need was discovered to consider the context of buildings during the design of smart living systems, and the recommendation is for professionals to understand the kind of digital technology to be integrated into a building by strongly considering the context of the building and how smart living will be achieved within it based on users’ perceptions. The study provides valuable insights into the occupants’ perceptions of critical smart features/functions for policymakers and practitioners to consider in the construction of smart living systems, specifically students’ smart buildings. This study contributes to knowledge by identifying the critical smart functions to achieve smart living based on occupants’ perceptions of smart living by considering the specific context of a smart student building facility constructed in Hong Kong.
