Training Interventions Used in Postmenopausal Women to Improve Pelvic Floor Muscle Function Related to Urinary Continence—A Systematic Review

Background: The aim of this review was to analyze training interventions used and their effectiveness in improving pelvic floor muscle function related to urinary continence in postmenopausal women. We then characterized the recommended pelvic floor muscle training programs used in experimental studies based on four training components: frequency, intensity, duration, and type of pelvic floor muscle exercise. Methods: For this purpose, we conducted a literature review of works published up until the end of 2024, available in the Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus with Full Text databases. We used the keywords “pelvic floor muscle”, “training”, and “postmenopausal women”. Initially, we identified 205 articles published between 1997 and 2024. Then, based on specific criteria, we qualified 15 for analysis. Results: Thirteen studies included only PFMT, while three of them combined PFMT with other physical activity. In two studies, training was conducted in the form of a virtual video game using a pressure platform. We have noted that researchers most often use a 1 h pad test, digital palpation, and surface electromyography to assess the function of pelvic floor muscles. In improving pelvic floor muscle function related to urinary incontinence, 14 out of the 15 analyzed studies showed improvement. In only eight of the fifteen articles, researchers characterized all components of the implemented PFMT that enable full replication of the training intervention. In four of the studies, only one of the required components, namely intensity, was missing. The recommended number of training sessions was 2 to 7 per week, on average 3 ± 2 (M ± SD). Training interventions lasted from 2 to 24 weeks, on average 10 ± 6 weeks. Conclusions: Regardless of the chosen form of training intervention, PFMT is an effective method in improving the function of pelvic floor muscles in postmenopausal women. Full article

Walking and cycling, as active modes of transportation, play a vital role in advancing sustainable urban mobility by reducing emissions and improving public health. However, widespread adoption faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, safety concerns, socio-cultural barriers, and policy limitations. This study systematically reviewed 56 peer-reviewed articles from 2004 to 2024, across 30 countries across five continents, employing the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) framework to identify the main drivers of walking and cycling behaviours. Findings highlight that the lack of dedicated infrastructure, inadequate enforcement of road safety measures, personal and traffic safety concerns, and social stigmas collectively hinder active mobility. Strategic interventions such as developing integrated cycling networks, financial incentives, urban planning initiatives, and behavioural change programs have promoted increased engagement in walking and cycling. Enhancing urban mobility further requires investment in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, improved integration with public transportation, the implementation of traffic-calming measures, and public education campaigns. Post-pandemic initiatives to establish new pedestrian and cycling spaces offer a unique opportunity to establish enduring changes that support active transportation. The study suggests expanding protected cycling lanes and integrating pedestrian pathways with public transit systems to strengthen safety and accessibility. Additionally, leveraging digital tools can enhance mobility planning and coordination. Future research is needed to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in enhancing mobility analysis, supporting the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, and informing transport policies that integrate gender perspectives to better understand long-term behavioural changes. Coordinated policy efforts and targeted investments can lead to more equitable transportation access, support sustainability goals, and alleviate urban traffic congestion. Full article

This scoping review investigates the digital transition of critical energy infrastructure (CEI) in maritime ports, which are increasingly vital as energy hubs amid global decarbonisation efforts. Recognising the growing role of ports in integrating offshore renewables, hydrogen, and LNG systems, the study examines how digital technologies (such as automation, IoT, and AI) support the resilience, efficiency, and sustainability of port-based CEI. A multifaceted search strategy was implemented to identify relevant academic and grey literature. The search was performed between January 2025 and 30 April 2025. The strategy focused on databases such as Scopus. Due to limitations encountered in retrieving sufficient, directly relevant academic papers from databases alone, the search strategy was systematically expanded to include grey literature such as reports, policy documents, and technical papers from authoritative industry, governmental, and international organisations. Employing Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and PRISMA-ScR (scoping review) guidelines, the review synthesises insights from 62 academic and grey literature sources to address five core research questions relating to the current state, challenges, importance, and future directions of digital CEI in ports. Literature distribution of articles varies across continents, with Europe contributing the highest number of publications (53%), Asia (24%) and North America (11%), while Africa and Oceania account for only 3% of the publications. Findings reveal significant regional disparities in digital maturity, fragmented governance structures, and underutilisation of digital systems. While smart port technologies offer operational gains and support predictive maintenance, their effectiveness is constrained by siloed strategies, resistance to collaboration, and skill gaps. The study highlights a need for holistic digital transformation frameworks, cross-border cooperation, and tailored approaches to address these challenges. The review provides a foundation for future empirical work and policy development aimed at securing and optimising maritime port energy infrastructure in line with global sustainability targets. Background/Objectives: Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in men, and robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has become a preferred treatment for localized disease. Postoperative urinary continence is a key determinant of quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the preoperative patient characteristics and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) data that determine early postoperative continence in patients who underwent robotic radical prostatectomy at our clinic. Methods: In this study, patients who underwent robotic radical prostatectomy at our clinic between March 2020 and June 2022 were evaluated. The patients’ demographic data, preoperative PSA levels, digital rectal examination findings, preoperative lower urinary tract symptoms, sexual function, mpMRI findings, Briganti scores, surgical techniques used during the procedure and postoperative continence status were assessed. Results: A total of 111 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 61.1 years. The median follow-up duration was twelve months. According to the postoperative continence status, 22% of the patients were incontinent, 53% had moderate continence and 24% were fully continent in the first month. At the third month, 16.8% of the patients were incontinent, 31.3% had moderate continence and 51.8% were fully continent. At the one-year postoperative follow-up, the percentages of incontinent, moderately continent and fully continent patients were 4.8%, 13.2% and 81.9%, respectively. Urethral width in mpMRI (p: 0.012), pelvic transverse (p: 0.002) and AP (anterior–posterior) diameters (p: 0.033), preoperative IPSS scores (p: 0.033) and the presence of bilateral nerve-sparing surgery (p: 0.047) were found to be associated with postoperative urinary continence. No significant differences were found between groups regarding the relationship of other parameters evaluated by mpMRI with continence. Conclusions: In our study, preoperative IPSS scores, urethral width in mpMRI, pelvic transverse and AP diameters and the performance of nerve-sparing surgery were associated with early postoperative continence. Further studies with larger patient populations are needed to better understand the long-term predictors of postoperative urinary incontinence following radical prostatectomy. Full article

From an outside perspective, it is not clear whether the Catholic Church is an active digital entity, or at least, it is not perceived as such. This paper analyses this issue. The methodology involved the monitoring of ecclesiastical Internet activity, SWOT analysis and in-depth interviews (seven) with clergy and technological suppliers of the Church in both Spain and Latin America. Results: Catholic Church digitalisation is spontaneous, as a reflection of society at large, and is heterogeneous due to its decentralised management. There is more inner acceptance of digital mediatisation for proclamation or support in faith (i.e., apps for praying) and less acceptance for the digitalised practice of rites (digital mediation in the celebration of sacraments is an open debate); however, the presence of ICTs in sacred places is increasing (i.e., liturgical books on screen). The evangelisation of the digital continent is an objective of the Church, whereby clergy influencers are the most striking but less solid case. There is almost full digital implementation at the functional level (i.e., digitised accounting and archives). Only charitable action with vulnerable groups remains analogue. Polarisation is also present, as ultra-Catholic groups are over-represented on the Internet. Conclusion: The Catholic Church is integrated in the Information and Digital Age but is also concerned with spiritual impoverishment, as online fragmentation does not feed real humanitarian communities. Objectives: This review assesses how daily exposure to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) affects executive functions in children and adolescents and explores the roles of parents in mitigating potential negative impacts on cognitive development and emotional regulation. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was conducted from 2022 to 2024 using PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. The study criteria included cohort studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs, and systematic reviews. Data extraction and risk-of-bias assessments were performed using ROBIS and ROBINS-E tools. Due to the heterogeneity of the results, a narrative synthesis was carried out. Results: Ten studies were included for analysis, comprising a total of 231,117 children from nine countries on three continents. Most studies indicated that excessive ICT exposure negatively affects executive functions, particularly working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and attention. Adverse effects were linked to increased screen time, poor sleep quality, and multitasking. However, two studies found no significant association, highlighting the influence of contextual factors like socioeconomic status, parental mediation, and screen content type. Shared ICT use with parents or siblings appeared to reduce negative effects. Conclusions: Excessive ICT exposure is associated with impaired executive function development in children and adolescents. Parental supervision and structured ICT use may mitigate risks. Future research should investigate moderating factors, such as socioeconomic status and ICT content, to develop guidelines for healthy digital engagement in youth. Full article

The global digital transformation poses challenges for schools and teachers. The importance of digitalization-related professional development (PD) in overcoming these challenges is widely recognized, even if only few studies confirm the desired success. This article explores the relationship between the participation of teachers in digitalization-related PD and variables that are associated with successful PD in an international context. The structural equation modeling analyses are based on data from the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS 2018). Data from Chile (N = 1682 teachers), Denmark (N = 1108), Germany (N = 2303), the Republic of Korea (N = 2122), and the USA (N = 3174) are considered. These five countries are located on four different continents and have divergent conditions for working with ICT in schools and teacher PD. The results reveal significant relations between the participation in digitalization-related PD and positive views on using ICT in schools, the emphasis on promoting ICT-related skills among students, and the frequency of the use of ICT in the classroom across all countries. These findings demonstrate the importance of PD in the context of the digital transformation in schools, irrespective of international variations in school systems, digitalization processes, and conditions for PD. This paper delves into sustainability and energy policies influencing the governance and dynamics of global maritime trade. Resilience and sustainability are also discussed, along with the obstacles encountered and strategies to overcome them. The analysis underscores the importance of developing long-term strategies and participatory processes, focusing on government involvement in promoting structural changes towards a more sustainable seaborne transport system. Part of our research is also dedicated to outlining the different factors influencing this industry among different continents, highlighting the need for increasingly unified governance frameworks internationally. By incorporating resilience theory and new technologies, with a high potential in terms of GHG emission reduction, governments and firms can better engage stakeholders, ensure business resilience, and address climate change risks. This study concludes that ports have significant power in driving structural change, and modernization across various areas—such as digitalization, energy policies, safety, green fuels, environmental sustainability, and effective coordination—is essential for their continued development. This paper calculates the level of digital economy development and the degree of economic and ecological integration in 100 countries from 2009 to 2022 using the entropy weight method and equal weight method. It empirically tests the impact, influencing mechanisms, and spatial effects of the digital economy on the integration of economy and ecology. Furthermore, it analyzes the coordination degree of the digital economy and economic–ecological integration across different continents using coupling coordination analysis. The research results are as follows: First, the digital economy has promoted the integrated development of economy and ecology in various countries, with a more significant effect in high-income and upper-middle-income countries. Countries with higher levels of digital economy development show a more pronounced promoting effect. Second, the digital economy can reduce energy consumption, promote the efficient utilization of clean energy, lower carbon emissions, and thus facilitate the integrated development of economy and ecology through industrial structure optimization and driving technological innovation. Third, a country’s digital economy has a positive spillover effect on the economic and ecological integration development of its neighboring countries. The coupling coordination analysis reveals that Europe has the highest coupling coordination degree of the digital economy and economic–ecological integration, with significant spatial autocorrelation. This is followed by the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Therefore, countries should actively promote digital economy development, strengthen digital economic cooperation, jointly address international environmental and climate issues, and promote the integration of economy and ecology. The Antarctic region holds significant scientific research value and potential resources. Currently, limited research exists on the use of seismic exploration methods for Antarctic subglacial lakes compared to their use on other continents. Moreover, few reports are available on systems capable of multi-channel seismic data acquisition, remote data quality monitoring, and high-speed real-time data recycling in the extremely low temperatures of Antarctica. In this study, we developed a Zynq-based seismic acquisition station for polar exploration. The system features a compact design, lightweight construction, high data collection accuracy, excellent cold resistance, low power consumption, and real-time control. The software and hardware design of the system are described here, and validity testing is presented. The main controller utilizes a Zynq series system-on-chip integrated with an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) and an ARM (Advanced RISC Machine), enabling functions such as local data storage on a secure digital card, Wi-Fi wireless human–machine interaction, and high-speed Ethernet data transmission. Furthermore, to enhance data acquisition accuracy under low-temperature conditions, a neural network was employed for the temperature drift correction of the analog-to-digital converter chip. The validity test results showed that the station operated stably, was easy to use, and met the high-standard requirements for polar exploration. Full article

Europe has set a target to become a decarbonised continent by 2050. To achieve this, intervention in buildings is crucial, as they serve as significant energy consumers and greenhouse gas emitters. This intervention encompasses two essential pathways: renovation and digitalisation. The combination of these two aspects gives rise to elements such as the Digital Building Logbook (DBL), a digital data repository expected to enhance the pace and quality of renovation efforts. This paper introduces, for the first time, a European DBL data model with a specific focus on building renovation purposes—the DBrL. It outlines its initial requirements, constituent entities, relationships, and attributes. While acknowledging the need to address issues related to data protection, integration with existing data sources, and connections with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) in subsequent design phases, the study’s outcome represents a significant stride in defining this tool. A decline in European students’ interest in STEM subjects, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of education, has raised concerns about the continent’s future workforce. To address this challenge, this study investigates the efficacy of the BIG GAME project methodology, a cooperative story-driven digital game approach designed to engage secondary students in collaborative environmental problem-solving. Implemented across Romania, Italy, Estonia, and Finland, this six-month study employed a mixed-methods design involving 62 teachers and 239 students in ten distinct game missions focused on environmental challenges. The quantitative results indicated significant improvements in students’ transversal skills (teamwork, communication, and critical thinking), as reported by over 75% of teachers. The qualitative data emphasised the value of structured peer review in developing students’ reflective practices. This research underscores the importance of teacher facilitation in game-based learning and problem-based simulations and highlights the potential of such methodologies to boost student engagement and environmental awareness. These findings suggest that the BIG GAME project approach could be a valuable tool for revitalising STEM education and cultivating future-ready citizens. Full article

Sexting has become a common mode of expression within the digital realm. Understanding sexting in the context of African college campuses is crucial, as it reflects the impact of technological advancements and the interplay of cultural norms, values, and societal factors. This review seeks to provide evidence to inform context-specific initiatives and policies aimed at promoting responsible digital communication and enhancing the well-being of college students within the continent. This scoping review followed the guidelines by Askey and O’Malley. The search for records was conducted in four main electronic databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, Central, and JSTOR. Additional searches were conducted using Google Scholar, Google, and ProQuest. A total of 11 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Results: The findings of this review are grouped under the following four main headings: type of sexting, prevalence, predictors of sexting, and outcomes of sexting. The main types of sexting were sending and receiving nude pictures and sexually explicit messages and posting explicit videos and photos on social media. The prevalence rates for general sexting ranged from 9.9% to 74.4%. Positive outcomes of sexting included increased condom negotiation skills and sexual communication that contribute to safer sexual practices. Negative sexual outcomes included high-risk-taking sexual behaviour such as multiple sexual partners. This review highlights the intricate facets of sexting among African college students, and emphasises the interplay between digital communication, societal norms, and individual behaviours. Policies should prioritise cyberbullying prevention, privacy protection, and ethical technology use. Full article

Historically, water utilities have relied on tried-and-true practices in the design and operation of their infrastructure, tapping new resources and expanding networks as needed. However, as the effects of climate change and/or urbanization increasingly impact both water supply and demand, utilities need new, holistic planning and management approaches. Integrated planning approaches must account for changing policies, technological progress, and unique, setting-specific operating conditions. Based on this notion, an international web seminar with faculty, researchers, and students from nine universities across five continents was conducted. In the 3-month seminar, participants were split into groups and tasked with developing future-proof, sustainable water management solutions for fictitious settings with unique resource availability, climate change predictions, demographic, and socioeconomic constraints. The goal of the seminar was to combine participants’ unique perspectives to tackle challenges in developing future water infrastructure, while forming lasting relationships. Water management concepts became more daring or “out-of-the-box” as the seminar progressed. Most groups opted for a holistic approach, optimizing existing infrastructure, integrating decentralized water management, furthering digitization, and fostering the adoption of innovative policy and planning strategies. To gauge their impact on the evolution of ideas, group dynamics and communication were observed throughout the seminar. As a result, the findings serve not only as a compendium of ideas and concepts for holistic design in the water sector, but also facilitate international collaboration, improve communication in cross-cultural teams or guide the development of training programs in water management for researchers, professional engineers, or water utilities. Herbaria constitute a form of documentation, store and secure comparative material, as well as constitute an extra original gene bank. They are an invaluable database among others for the biological, ethnobotanical and agricultural sciences. The digitization of herbarium collections significantly facilitates access to archival materials; however, searching them is still time-consuming. Therefore, our work aims to analyze the herbarium collection of 8801 sheets for specimens representing the economically important family Amaranthaceae (Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae clade) deposited the oldest herbarium in Poland, the herbarium of the Jagiellonian University (KRA). These specimens have been collected from almost all the continents in dozens of countries for over 200 years. The analyses conducted, including the taxonomic coverage, geographical characteristics and origin, temporal coverage and utility importance of representative species, present the discussed resources in a more accessible way and may become a more attractive form for scientists potentially interested in more advanced research work.
