This study presents the results of axial tension (uplift) and compression tests evaluating the capacity of helical piles installed in Shahriyar dense sand using the UTM apparatus. Thirteen pile load experiments involving single-, double-, or triple-helix piles with shaft diameters of 13 mm were performed, including six compression tests and seven tension tests with different pitches (Dh =13, 20, and 25 mm). The tested helical piles with a helix diameter of 51 mm were considered, and the interhelix spacing approximately ranged between two and four times the helix diameter. Through laboratory testing techniques, the Shahriyar dense sand properties were identified. Alongside theoretical analyses of helical piles, the tensile and compressive pile load tests outcomes in dense sand with a relative density of 70% are presented. It was found that the maximum capacities of the compressive and tensile helical piles were up to six and eleven times that of the shaft capacity, respectively. With an increasing number of helices, the settlement reduced, and the bearing capacity increased. Consequently, helical piles can be manufactured in smaller sizes compared to steel piles. Overall, the compressive capacities of helical piles were higher than the tensile capacities under similar conditions. Single-helices piles with a pitch of 20 mm and double-helices piles with a pitch of 13 mm were more effective than others. Therefore, placing helices at the shallower depths and using smaller pitches result in better performance. In this study, when compared to values from the L1–L2 method, the theoretical method slightly underestimates the ultimate compression capacity and both overestimates and underestimates the uplift capacity for single- and double-helical piles, respectively, due to the individual bearing mode and cylindrical shear mode. This study investigates the encroachment risk in the Makause informal settlement by analysing resident survey data to identify key contributing factors and build predictive models. Encroachment threatens the water infrastructure through damage, contamination, and service disruptions, highlighting the need for informed, community-based planning. The data was collected from 105 residents, with responses (“Yes,” “No,” “Unsure”) analysed using descriptive statistics and a one-way ANOVA to identify significant differences across categories. The ReliefF algorithm was used to rank the importance of features predicting the encroachment risk. These inputs were then used to train, validate, and test an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. The Artificial Neural Network demonstrated a high predictive accuracy, achieving correlation coefficients above 95% and low mean squared errors. The ANOVA identified statistically significant mean differences for selected variables, while ReliefF helped determine the most influential predictors. A high agreement level (p > 0.900) between predicted and actual responses confirmed the model’s validity. This research introduces an innovative, data-driven framework that integrates machine learning and a statistical analysis to support municipalities and utility providers in engaging informal communities to protect infrastructure. While this study is limited to Makause and may be affected by a self-reported bias, it demonstrates the potential of Artificial Neural Networks and ReliefF in enhancing the risk analysis and infrastructure management in informal settlements. Today, urban areas have started to grow and expand with the urbanization and industrialization processes brought about by rapid population growth. The increase in urban density brought about by this growth process has led to the destruction of natural areas and created surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, etc., that absorb solar energy. The expansion/proliferation of impervious surfaces in the city has changed the urban climate in the direction of temperature increase compared to the surrounding rural areas. When this change is combined with the temperature increases due to global climate change, it creates urban heat islands, especially in high density areas, and directly affects land surface temperatures. In this study, ground surface temperature analysis for the years 2012–2022 was carried out in order to determine the temperature changes in Denizli city. As a result of the analysis, eight urban textures with different characteristics with very high and high temperature increase were determined. Analyses were made in the context of urban heat island criteria in the determined textures, and the effect of the settlement pattern on urban heat island formation was examined by making use of the analysis results and related literature findings. Spatial Disparities in University Admission Outcomes Among Ethnic Hungarian Students: Regional Analysis in the Central European Carpathian Basin

This research investigates higher education admission outcomes at Hungarian universities for ethnic Hungarian minority students residing in countries within the Carpathian Basin. The region is distinguished by a variety of national policies that impact minority education. By analyzing extensive data on the availability of mother tongue education, the status of minority rights, advanced level examination performance, and types of settlement using a wide range of statistical methods, our study reveals significant cross-national differences in the distribution of admission scores and central tendencies. Compared to lower and more varied scores for students from Ukraine and Romania, ethnic Hungarian students from Serbia and Slovakia achieved high average admission scores. Performance was notably more consistent among students from EU member states compared to non-EU regions, strongly linking outcomes to the more robust implementation of minority rights and better access to mother-tongue education within the EU framework. A critical finding is the strong positive correlation (Pearson r = 0.837) between admission scores and advanced level examination results, highlighting the pivotal role of these exams for the academic progression of these minority students. The Jonckheere-Terpstra test (p < 0.05) further confirmed significant performance differences between ranked country groups, with Serbian and Slovak students generally outperforming their Ukrainian and Romanian counterparts. Counterintuitively, settlement type (urban vs. rural) exhibited a negligible relationship with admission scores (r = 0.150), explaining only 2% of score variability. This challenges common assumptions and suggests other factors specific to the Hungarian minority context are more influential. This study provides crucial insights into the complex dynamics influencing Hungarian minority students’ access to higher education, underscoring cross-country educational inequalities, and informing the development of equitable minority rights and mother-tongue education policies in Central Europe for these often-marginalized communities. In recent years, the region of Valparaíso has faced devastating fires, notably the Viña del Mar fire on 2 February 2024, which affected 9252 hectares. This study analyzes fire behavior in informal settlements and assesses the effectiveness of different construction materials through scaled prototypes of dwellings made from MDF, OSB, TetraPak, and flame-retardant resin composites. Controlled fire experiments were conducted, recording fire spread times and atmospheric conditions. Results confirm significant differences in fire spread rates and structural survival times between materials, highlighting the practical benefit of fire-resistant alternatives. The Kaplan–Meier survival analysis indicates critical time thresholds for rapid flame escalation and structural collapse under semi-open conditions, supporting the need for improved safety measures. Burn pattern observations further revealed the role of wind, thermal radiation, and material properties in fire dynamics. Overall, this study provides experimental evidence aligned with real fire scenarios, offering quantified insights to enhance fire prevention and response strategies in vulnerable settlements. These findings provide an exploratory basis for understanding fire dynamics in informal settlements but do not constitute definitive design prescriptions. Full article

This paper examines interpretations of depopulation in Norse Greenland between the 14th and 15th centuries CE. Using in-depth interviews with 13 experts working on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of settlement and depopulation in Norse Greenland, we examine the different interpretations of decline by experts using the same data. Our analysis reveals a geographical and disciplinary pattern of interpretation that reflects the institutional and disciplinary cultures, successive paradigms, and placed ideas about human–environment interaction. We examine the interplay between data and interpretation to uncover key developments in knowledge of the past and ideas about both the role of climate, ecology and social, economic and political processes in the end of the Norse settlement in Greenland, as well as their wider persistence in the North Atlantic region. In particular, we emphasise the importance of active reflection on disciplinary training, schools of thought, and national narratives in both the interpretation and perceived relevance of the past. This study establishes a multiphysics coupling model of acoustics, mechanics, and electrostatics through COMSOL, systematically explores the sound field distribution and stress–strain characteristics of tailing particles in sand silos under different frequencies of ultrasonic radiation, and proposes an optimization scheme for the sound field. The simulation results show that under 28 kHz ultrasonic radiation, the amplitude of sound pressure in the sand silo (173 Pa) is much lower than that at 40 kHz (1220 Pa), which can avoid damaging the original settlement mode of the tail mortar. At the same time, the periodic fluctuation amplitude of its longitudinal sound pressure is significantly greater than 25 kHz, which can promote settlement by enhancing particle tensile and compressive stress, achieving the best comprehensive effect. The staggered placement scheme of the transducer eliminates upward disturbance in the flow field by changing the longitudinal opposing sound field to oblique propagation, reduces energy dissipation, and increases the highest sound pressure level in the compartment to 130 dB. The sound pressure distribution density is significantly improved, further enhancing the settling effect. This study clarifies the correlation mechanism between ultrasound parameters and tailings’ settling efficiency, providing a theoretical basis for parameter optimization of ultrasound-assisted tailing treatment technology. Its results have important application value in the optimization of tailings settling in metal mine tailing filling. Full article

The spatial genes of rural settlements show a lot of different traditional settlement traits, which makes them a great starting point for studying rural spatial morphology. However, qualitative and macro-regional statistical indicators are usually used to find and extract rural settlement spatial genes. Taking Yubei Village in the Nanxi River Basin as an example, this study combined remote sensing images, real-time drone mapping, GIS (geographic information system), and space syntax, extracted 12 key indicators from five dimensions (landform and water features (environment), boundary morphology, spatial structure, street scale, and building scale), and quantitatively “decoded” the spatial genes of the settlement. The results showed that (1) the settlement is a “three mountains and one water” pattern, with cultivated land accounting for 37.4% and forest land accounting for 34.3% of the area within the 500 m buffer zone, while the landscape spatial diversity index (LSDI) is 0.708. (2) The boundary morphology is compact and agglomerated, and locally complex but overall orderly, with an aspect ratio of 1.04, a comprehensive morphological index of 1.53, and a comprehensive fractal dimension of 1.31. (3) The settlement is a “clan core–radial lane” network: the global integration degree of the axis to the holy hall is the highest (0.707), and the local integration degree R3 peak of the six-room ancestral hall reaches 2.255. Most lane widths are concentrated between 1.2 and 2.8 m, and the eaves are mostly higher than 4 m, forming a typical “narrow lanes and high houses” water town streetscape. (4) The architectural style is a combination of black bricks and gray tiles, gable roofs and horsehead walls, and “I”-shaped planes (63.95%). This study ultimately constructed a settlement space gene map and digital library, providing a replicable quantitative process for the diagnosis of Jiangnan water town settlements and heritage protection planning. Oases in arid regions are critical ecosystems, providing essential ecological, agricultural, and socio-economic functions. However, urbanization and climate change increasingly threaten their sustainability. This study examines land cover (LULC) and land surface temperature (LST) dynamics in four representative North African oases: Tolga (Algeria), Nefta (Tunisia), Ghadames (Libya), and Siwa (Egypt) over the period 2000–2023, using Landsat satellite imagery. A three-step analysis was employed: calculation of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDBI (Normalized Difference Built-up Index), and LST, followed by supervised land cover classification and statistical tests to examine the relationships between the studied variables. The results reveal substantial reductions in bare soil (e.g., 48.10% in Siwa) and notable urban expansion (e.g., 136.01% in Siwa and 48.46% in Ghadames). Vegetation exhibited varied trends, with a slight decline in Tolga (0.26%) and a significant increase in Siwa (+27.17%). LST trends strongly correlated with land cover changes, demonstrating increased temperatures in urbanized areas and moderated temperatures in vegetated zones. Notably, this study highlights that traditional urban designs integrated with dense palm groves significantly mitigate thermal stress, achieving lower LST compared to modern urban expansions characterized by sparse, heat-absorbing surfaces. In contrast, areas dominated by fragmented vegetation or seasonal crops exhibited reduced cooling capacity, underscoring the critical role of vegetation type, spatial arrangement, and urban morphology in regulating oasis microclimates. Preserving palm groves, which are increasingly vulnerable to heat-driven pests, diseases and the introduction of exotic species grown for profit, together with a revival of the traditional compact urban fabric that provides shade and has been empirically confirmed by other oasis studies to moderate the microclimate more effectively than recent low-density extensions, will maintain the crucial synergy between buildings and vegetation, enhance the cooling capacity of these settlements, and safeguard their tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Donate or Not to Donate—Willingness to Donate and Accept Donor Human Milk

Background/Objectives: Breast milk donation is increasingly recognized as a vital public health resource, providing optimal nutrition for infants who cannot be breastfed by their biological mothers. Human milk banks play a crucial role in supporting infant health, particularly for preterm and medically vulnerable infants. Despite its recognized benefits, the practice of breast milk donation and utilization remains influenced by a complex interplay of individual, social, and cultural factors. Methods: This study systematically examines how demographic and sociocultural variables are associated with attitudes and behaviors related to breast milk donation. Data were collected from 1223 Israeli mothers via questionnaires distributed through WhatsApp groups between April and May 2025. By analyzing the questionnaire results, the research identified key predictors of willingness to donate and use donated milk, as well as patterns of awareness and perceived support within different population groups. Results: Higher education (χ2 = 12.87, p = 0.0016) and settlement type (χ2 = 83.096, p = 0.000) were significantly associated with greater willingness to donate breast milk. Income level had no effect on donation behavior, though higher-income participants were more open to its use (χ2 = 86.838, p = 0.000). Lifestyle also influenced perceptions of social support (F(2, 1220) = 259.4036, p < 0.001) and cultural support (F(2, 1220) = 601.2383, p < 0.001) of milk donation and use. Significant correlation was found between perceived cultural and social support (t = 5.140, p = 0.000), emphasizing their interrelated influence on milk donation attitudes. Conclusions: The findings assist in guiding the development of public health policies, as well as targeted awareness campaigns, to promote equitable access to donor milk services across varied communities. From the public health perspective, the findings of this study can orientate campaigns that encourage both donation and use of breast milk focusing on segments of the population in which the level of awareness is relatively low. Knowledge of the habitat characteristics of endangered species is an important basis for in situ conservation, release-site selection, and habitat modification. Although the Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is one of the world’s most endangered species, little is known about its habitat preferences, and the results of past studies differ greatly. To clarify the habitat characteristics of the Chinese pangolin, we conducted habitat surveys in Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces of China using the transect method. A total of 520 burrow sites of Chinese pangolins were recorded in three study areas. The resulting data were analyzed using a generalized additive model, principal coordinate analysis, and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Nine ecological factors (elevation, slope, soil type, canopy coverage, surface coverage, number of trees, number of logs, tree diameter at breast height, and distance to a settlement) were found to affect pangolins’ distribution. Burrows were preferentially distributed at elevations of 50–150 m (62.3%), in silty soil (88.1%), on 20–40° slopes (83.3%), within young and medium-aged broadleaved forests with a canopy coverage exceeding 70% (65.8%), and close to water (less than 300 m). Among the three study regions, pangolin habitats differed significantly in seven environmental factors: elevation, canopy coverage, surface coverage, number of trees, distance to water, distance to a road, and distance to a settlement. Our findings imply that the Chinese pangolin appears to tolerate a broad range of ecological characteristics; however, food resources may be the key factor affecting its habitat selection, and other factors may indirectly affect its distribution by affecting food abundance. Finally, aside from hunting, a low level of human disturbance does not affect the presence of this species. Full article

With ongoing global warming, glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and associated debris flows pose increasing threats to downstream communities and infrastructure. Glacial lakes differ in their triggering factors and breach mechanisms, necessitating event-specific analysis. This study investigates the GLOF risk of Jiongpuco Lake, located in the southeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau, using an integrated approach combining remote sensing, field surveys, and numerical modeling. Results show that the lake has expanded significantly—from 2.08 km2 in 1990 to 5.43 km2 in 2021—with the most rapid increase observed between 2015 and 2016. InSAR data and optical imagery indicate that surrounding moraine deposits remain generally stable. However, ice avalanches from the glacier terminus are identified as the primary trigger for lake outburst via wave-induced overtopping. Mechanical and geomorphological analyses suggest that the moraine dam is resistant to downcutting erosion, reinforcing overtopping as the dominant failure mode. To assess potential impacts, three numerical simulation scenarios were conducted based on different avalanche volumes. Under the extreme scenario involving a 5-million m3 ice avalanche, the modeled peak discharge at the dam site reaches approximately 19,000 m3/s. Despite the high flood magnitude, the broad and gently sloped downstream terrain facilitates rapid attenuation of flood peaks, resulting in limited impact on downstream settlements. Typo-morphology, as interpreted by the Italian School of Planning, provides an approach to investigate the relationship between built form and socio-cultural patterns in vernacular settlements. This study examines Harran, a heritage site in southeastern Türkiye known for its distinctive conic domed dwellings, to explore how typo-morphological analysis can inform culturally sensitive design and adaptive reuse approaches. Despite its historical significance and inclusion in the UNESCO tentative list, Harran faces insufficient documentation, fragmented governance, limited conservation, and increasing pressure from urbanization and natural disasters. Using multiple sources and fieldwork, the research reconstructs the morphological evolution of Harran through diachronic maps across compound, district, and town scales. Reflections from Alberobello, Italy, i.e., the sister city of Harran and a UNESCO-listed town with a similarly unique vernacular fabric, provide a comparative view to explore different heritage management approaches. Harran evolved through informal, culture-driven growth, whereas Alberobello followed a regulated path. While Alberobello benefits from planned development and institutional preservation, Harran faces partial abandonment and neglect. By positioning typo-morphology as a conceptual planning tool, this paper emphasizes the need for context-responsive, ethically grounded, and inclusive approaches to heritage planning and conservation. It argues for planning practices that are not only technically competent but also attuned to place-based knowledge, local identities, and the long-term sustainability of living heritage. Full article

Understanding forest-cover change and its drivers is vital for global forest management and policy development. This study analyzed perceptions of historical drivers behind land-use/land-cover change (LULCC) and forest change in gazetted forests from 1966 to 2022 to evaluate the impact of human activities around the gazetted forest reserves, comparing three forests in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Three gazetted forests (Doma, Risha, and Odu) were sampled to represent the three geopolitical zones of the state. SPSS IBM version 29, NVivo 1.7, and Python 3 were used for data analyses to generate statistics and identify coherent themes across the forests. Results show that changes were perceived to be triggered by sixteen drivers (direct and indirect) related to social, economic, environmental, policy/institutional, and technological elements. Agricultural expansion, lumbering, and charcoal production were the most reported direct drivers, while population growth, poverty, and government policies were the most perceived indirect drivers. The results showed variations in human activities across forest sites. For example, agricultural expansion, lumbering, and grazing were more widespread, while construction and settlement activities differed between forests. The Risha forest community saw agriculture expansion ahead of other drivers, Doma forest people saw population growth above other drivers, and the Odu forest community saw lumbering aiding other drivers that led to change. Implementation of policies focusing on these key drivers must match local perceptions and priorities to engage people in forest conservation. These efforts could ensure effective forest protection that is vital for achieving global biodiversity and climate targets and safeguarding local livelihoods. The specific drivers of changes in each forest need to be targeted in conservation efforts. Full article

Refugee settlements are often positioned around natural borders, which often have a heightened danger of environmental hazards. Here, we aim to better understand why settlements are in environmentally vulnerable land and what social and physical factors contribute to this phenomenon. To do this, we present a holistic narrative that maps climate threats among displaced populations in Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh, while contextualizing environmental vulnerability by incorporating historical and social constraints. Using ArcGIS, an online mapping program, we illustrate the overlap between different climatic events and how these vulnerabilities compound and intensify one another. We also discuss the history of natural migration and settlement pertaining to the physical landscape and the sociopolitical reasons refugees remain in environmentally vulnerable areas. Overall, we find an emerging trend that may be broadly applicable to instances of forced displacement; physical settlement locations near international borders demarcated by landforms may be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and extreme climate events. However, physical, social, and political reasons often cement these locations. Recommendations include enhancing the resilience of refugee camps through infrastructure improvements, sustainable land management, and reforestation efforts, which would benefit both the environment and local and refugee communities.
